What keeps you here?

Postby The Imperial Navy » Thu Apr 08, 2010 9:29 am

I've been in and out of NSG since 2004. I've seen it all. The age of Epic Fail, the rise and fall of the greats, the endless flirtation of members with the Fairy Tinkerbelly...

And yet, I can't debate my way out of a paper bag, I am naive in nature, and most of my jokes are about as amusing as September 11, 2001. But for some reason, I persist. I'm still here, messing around, posting stupid comments and still trying (And failing) to have a debate. To make matters even more bothersome, I have a history with some of the users of this forum that causes some tense reactions on certain topics.

What keeps me going? I think it's the fact it's a familiar place, it's something I enjoy, and to top it off, part of me loves battling with others on topics, even if it is futile. So! My question is to those who have been here a while, those whom know the ins and outs of NSG.

What is it that keeps you here? Enjoyment? Or another reason?

I must admit... I usually don't join the conversations for that same reason (I want to debate I just can't). I do love hearing these conversations though. There are some really cool people here, and I think thats part of what makes this game so appealing. (Plus I like doing the RP's :D ).

I think that the tendency to debate was summed up best by a poster on another site (the James Randi Educational Foundation Forums). His username was Darth Rotor.

Darth Rotor wrote:For people involved in the War on Stupid, it's hard to resist the call to battle.

That's pretty much my motivation in a nutshell.
"Yes, indeed. Something like, perhaps, 'They Did The Job They Had To Do'?"
"No," said Vimes, coming to a halt under a lamp by the crypt entrance. "How dare you? How dare you! At this time! In this place! They did the job they didn't have to do, and they died doing it, and you can't give them anything. Do you understand? They fought for those who'd been abandoned, they fought for one another, and they were betrayed. Men like them always are. What good would a statue be? It'd just inspire new fools to believe they were going to be heroes. They wouldn't want that. Just let them be. Forever."

The ability to spend time with old friends and get to know new ones. The freedom to craft a story with characters and challenge myself to make them seem real and believable. The perspective of people from different parts of the world and different walks of life from my own.

Hence why Station 12 is a hellhole and none of my other nations were very interesting. They didn't contain enough PERFECTION.

You monster! Why would you remind me of that awful creature! :(

I've got alot invested in NSG. Czardas, myself and others (as I am fond of reminding people) made a musical for General. We did everything BUT record instrumentals and vocals, but it was still impressive how much we did. It's actually how I met nearly all of the mods. We even roped poor Melkor into the act.

General has charted my growth from curious agnostic, to Pagan, to staunch atheist. I've steadily moved more to the left as I've stayed here, in large part due to the people I've met.

I took a 1 or 2 year break and came back just last year. It was weird how much it changed. Quality of posts between my break and now significantly improved, General got its new batch of celebrities (weird, being that I used to be friends with many of the original celebs and Czardas considers me one of the. I think he's flattering me to get me to drop my guard so he can steal my soul, or something. He's a shifty kid. I love it.). It was even stranger, but awesome, for me to see that some of my idols were still here: Bottle, Grave 'n' Idle, and others. It hurt to remember that some of the best of us left, though. I miss Neo Art and The Cat Tribe, The Noble Men.

I'm slowly making new acquaintances here, and I like that. Not sure I'd consider any of the new crop my friends (yet), but we'll see. I tend to set a high bar for new people (which for me is anyone half my age or under), due to the people who were present when I first came to General.

I consider myself Czardas's mentor during his adorable formative years of NSG (he'll surely deny this), so I was..well, proud of the little scamp when he became a mod (don't tell him). I was equally surprised when LG became a mod, but I approved.

I'd give the leftover 1/8ths of my soul to get to enjoy the outcome of that.

Haha, I can try to remember to ask Czardas where we stashed it. It took us an entire summer to do. That's pretty much why nothing got recorded. We spent our whole vacation bickering over dialogue, plot, musical scores, interviews, and then summer ended. We all went off to school and just didn't have time for it again. It's one of my few internet regrets.
