The tables thus far aren't really a suprise. Nordbergen and Alle top the tables, with Alle finding their feet after last season's abysmal play. DKXI is showing promise in their transfer window signings, sitting all the way up at 5th. KBFC are rather low for finishing in the top 3 last season, and will need to play better to get back up to their typical spot. Also, Gengenbach, who showed so much promise last season, sits with Südlander all the way in the relegation spot.

Gunwhale Pier and North End are the suprise teams after 10 matches, with Gunwhale 6 points clear of second. Another shocking result thus far has been the resurgance of the re-christened Swillburg Polaris, who are very much going to be in the race for the promotion spots. Sporting Eisenport FC is rather far behind after contending for the second promotion spot last season. It looks to be another good season in the 2. Liga.

As you pick up the Élite League season summary, a loose match report clipping from last season is clinging to it. Annoyed, you peel it off, but then curiosity gets the better of you.

CF Aéropag wins Coupe francophone in goal glut
AEROPAG—Élite League One side CF Aéropag succeeded in defending their Coupe francophone title through perhaps the most bizarre cup final in Paripanan football history, against fairy-tale finalists Espérance de Duncanville.

Espérance play in Division Three of the South Central League, and reached the final after knocking off the likes of FC Hendersonbourg and ÉC Blog-Piles. They were certainly never expected to pull up any trees or other foliage against a club five divisions their senior, which had already proven itself six goals better than a Division One side in the semifinal, and which had the usual advantage of playing the final at home atop the Olympic Tower.

Bleu-et-Orange playmaker Teo Alfaro seemed to confirm the expected result just seventeen seconds after the whistle, when he delivered an accurate lob over unsuspecting goalkeeper Aymon Robillard to open the scoring. Referee Valérie Simard was quick to put a stop to Espérance’s unsporting efforts to disrupt their opponents’ passing play, awarding a free kick in just the right spot for Alfaro to power in an unstoppable second goal on eight minutes. It was more of the same throughout the first half, as Dalimil Bartoš and Yaŋ Hyuŋ-Gyû took turns scrawling their names on the scoresheet, and even defender and captain Sotiris Iordanou got in on the act when he found himself unmarked on a corner kick. Back-to-back strikes in added time put the ultrabold oblique double-underlined all-caps on the seven–nil halftime score.

With one hand metaphorically on the cup, Aéropag manager Luca Zimmer opted to insert young strike partners Jadranka Ćosić and Lucille Arpin for the second half. The double substitution seemed to make little difference to the flow of play, as Ćosić added yet another line to the on-screen scoresheet graphic two minutes after the break. But a rare counter-attacking opportunity enabled Jun Ji-Hyi to delight the visiting supporters by cutting their deficit to a mere 8–1 with nearly an hour gone. Their awkward celebrations were soon cut short by winger Troilo Velasco, who rifled in a shot of his own and then two minutes later supplied an ingenious logarithmic pass to Yaŋ Hyuŋ-Gyû, who completed his hat-trick with the hosts’ tenth goal.

The match took a turn for the surreal when Aéropag goalkeeper Victor Larocque, little more than a spectator through most of the match, was denied the opportunity to view the remaining twenty minutes as he was sent off for tripping lone Espérance striker Anke Eisenberg as he was through on goal. With all three substitutions used, Iordanou sprinted to the touchline to retrieve the blank goalkeeper shirt, then found himself rooted to his goal line as Eisenberg launched a guided missile of a penalty kick toward the top-right corner. The captain-turned-goalkeeper was beaten again by Eisenberg from open play six minutes later, trimming the lead back to seven goals. Moving into the final ten minutes, Iordanou was grateful to receive the aid of the backtracking Yaŋ Hyuŋ-gyû in cutting out another dangerous Eisenberg run, but his slide tackle was adjudged to have recklessly hacked down the attacker and a second spot kick earned Eisenberg his hat-trick.

At this point, Espérance’s live text commentator erupted with superlatives and comparatives like “EISENBERG IS BETTER THAN VAN SORENSEN!” And when you-know-who did you-know-what again, his fourth in fourteen minutes, the Aéropag faithful almost started to seriously entertain the possibility that the Lukeonian minnows were going to complete a comeback from 10–1 down, now needing only five goals in six minutes plus stoppage to force extra time. Of course, it was not to be. The hosts regrouped, held possession, and Lucille Arpin even found a way forward in the eighty-ninth minute for one more goal to bring a fitting conclusion to the fixture.

The victory marks CF Aéropag’s thirteenth Coupe francophone title in the 27 seasons since the club was founded through the merger of CF Mont-Pluie Jativa and Aeropag Penguins. It is most decidedly the greatest margin of victory and highest score in the history of the final, surpassing their previous 6–2 win over Impact de Tory-sur-Rea in the 2220 final.

Coming to the end of another World Cup (which we yet again have failed to qualify for), the domestic ELFA football season has just about finished, so it's time for another season in review, this time for season 21. But before we go into that, let us look into what international competition had to offer on our behalf:
RGS Athletic: RGS qualified for the group stages of the TQCC in good fashion, beating out UMC of Blackclyffe and Osarius' Hastmead Diamante with wins in all four matches and conceding a solitary goal. They were drawn into Group G with Polarian FC1. Surtsey Island Gulls, Mytanar Energia-Yaderny Miago and Taeshani Real Atlantea, but finished third with 7 points (home wins over Surtsey and Atlantea, away draw to Surtsey). This put them to the Globe Cup knockouts, where two wins and (6-4 on aggregate) put out 1896 Ebor of Mytannion, before succumbing 4-2 to Echegoyan FC of Astograth, despite winning the first leg 1-0. Being in the TQCC, the RGS Juniors featured in the Youth Cup, in the same grouping as the seniors. They finished second on a 2-2-2 record, beating Surtsey and Miago at home and drawing Atlantea home and away, but then lost to SK Franz Josef City in the first knockout round.
Apart from UICA, RGS Athletic made another appearance in the Rushmore CdC, beating Mapletish's Home United, Sicoutimont Real Ile Perrot, Eura's Spartangrad and Pasarga's CA Paulinthal enroute to the final, where they faced undoubtedly the best club team of the current generation, and one of the best of all time, in double TQCC champions SK Franz Josef City. And the gulf in class showed; despite our best efforts, pulling the tie back to 1-1 shortly before half time, we ended up losing 3-1 to the team that deserved to win. And the international competition didn't stop there, as with the reinstitution of the KCC last season, the ELFA sent a team to the Cygnus Cup for the first time in a long while, that team being the cup winner RGS Athletic. And it was another decent showing, beating Danaelia's St. Ducuresti and Real Ile Perrot (again), before losing to runners-up Urbizania Wanderers of Astograth in the quarter-finals.
UR Town: As opposed the perennial champions of Lodger football, UR Town didn't fill themselves with as much glory, beating 95X's SC Oceanside before losing to Jasiyun's Qidada Savana and then losing to Mapletish's Golden Phoenix in the Globe Cup.
VLC FC: An embarrassing outing really, they lost in playoff round of the GC in their first tie to Eura's Revolutionaries.
Norrion Rovers: Lost to Moonchester United of Mapletish in the GC's 2nd preliminary round.
FM Town: A better performance than both of the above, FM Town knocked out Jellyfish United of Fonidia and Osteyon but then lost to Arsenrall of Mangolana.
Nile Bridge: The second division champions at a canter, they had high hopes going into this SBCC. They fell at their first hurdle to Parrots of Acedonia.
Royal Jam FC: 2nd place last season, they had a slightly better run, beating SLANI San Diego Iguanas and scraping past Passkay GU of Earent before falling to Felinetopia's Gatotopia PC.
Farond United: 3rd place, they lost to Taijan's Lumberjacks FC in their first ever international club match, but won in their second, only to be knocked out on away goals.
Liginara FC: 4th place team, and stuck in the second division. They beat FC Baudelaire of The Inevitable Syndicate and Wakita Whales of Maklohi Vai, before falling in the third round to Olympique Mortiise of Kitsunia-Deesse.

So, a brilliant run by RGS Athletic in all the competitions they took part in, but not much fanfare elsewhere. Anyways, onto the slightly more important league results. Obviously, RGS Athletic are the overwhelmingly huge favourites to reclaim the title for a 13th successive time, leaving the real battle to the places below them, i.e. the second TQCC spot and the two GC spots (with the third now being cup-tied). In the race for second place are likely to be the three that finished there last season: UR Town, VLC FC and Norrion Rovers. And apart from them, Monksville United and the woefully inconsistent FM Town will both be looking to pounce if one of those three falters. At the other end, any of the bottom 8 to 10 finishers from last season have a chance at being relegated, with the bottom of the league predicted to be as stupidly close as ever.

OK, almost all us guessed the champions, but few if any honestly thought that they'd clear the field by that wide a margin. 20 points clear? Now there's a margin we haven't seen at the top of the first division in a long time (if ever). Still, they topped, and that was a formality, but what about the rest of the table. Well, VLC FC have returned to second place having missed out by a solitary point last season, 3 points ahead of a 3-way points tie between FM Town, Norrion Rovers and Monksville United. In fact, FM Town were the only team with a real shout of overtaking VLC FC on the last day, but they fluffed their side of proceedings with a 3-0 loss to FC Tavernia (they needed to get more points than VLC FC, who made the loss moot by winning themselves). At the other end, the last day didn't see any relegation battle, Royal Jam FC already enough points clear to seal the fates of Farond United, Polkation FC and Half Boy FC. Last season's second division curbstompers Nile Bridge finished a comfortable tenth.

So, of last year's three relegated teams, only Lodgertia United make it back into the top flight, finishing third behind Seaton Town on H2H and 5 points off champions Indionion Athletic. Copper Communists finish 4th and take the last SBCC spot, however they'll be kicking themselves as they were in 2nd going into the last match, but a loss to Seaton Town plus Lodgertia United's win consign them to another year in the second tier. At the other end, it's a rare two-team relegation, with West Monurtag and Pasturia FC both being sent back a season after promotion. Pontifucia United, the third promotee, are comfortably mid-table.

That's the league out of the way, time to move onto the King's Commonwealth Cup. Last season, there weren't too many upsets enroute to the later rounds; however, Low Lyn FC and Caldarin FC both had remarkably deep runs, but in the end, RGS Athletic prevailed, beating out VLC FC to clinch the first domestic cup title in years (and their first double in years too). But that's all history, and maybe this season we'll see upsets abound, and some minnow will win the tournament and grab themselves that all important third Globe Cup berth.

The first round, despite being filled with teams not too different in quality, threw up some spectacular scorelines this time. Not least of which was Viruntia Town's 7-1 second leg demolition of Jam Athletic, to counter the 0-0 draw in the first leg. But then again, these were just the lower league teams facing off against each other; put the big boys into the mix and sparks will fly.

Yes, we said that sparks should fly, but it seemed to be an all out bloodbath between Lonbunia and Viruntia - 17 goals between them over the two legs. And courtesy of a 6-2 home win, Lonbunia won 10-7 on aggregate. Other high scoring fixtures were a bit more one-sided; Lodgertia City's 13-2 dismantling of Basalata FC the pick of the one-sided scores. However, the pick of the upsets had to Liginara's crushing victory over VLC FC. 7-0 in the first leg, and no hope for the second in everybody's mind. Other upsets of note were Seaton Town's loss to Losing the Game FC and Polkation FC's dumping of Norrion Rovers.

Ridiculous scorelines and upsets abound! Honsadin FC decided to put 7 past Pontifucia for a 7-4 aggregate win, and UR Town kept on their free-scoring cup form, now making it 16 goals in just 4 games, conceding just two. However, the talk of the round has to be RGS Athletic's shock exit at the hands of SS City, which pretty much leaves UR Town as favourites, more so with their ridiculous scorelines.

That thing about favourites, forget it. Nile Bridge put paid to that plan, with a 4 goal lead in fact. And in terms of upsets, a few other minor ones, but the big one being SS City doing it again, now knocking out Olympia FC. Also of note is Tuntingone FC's defence of their 2-0 lead over FM Town which seems them through the quarter-finals.

In what must have been one of the worst penalty shootouts ever, Royal Jam FC managed to convert the only penalty (in the second sudden death round as well) to advance ahead of Tuntingone FC. Losses for both the fairytale teams, Macaronia FC and Lonbunia Athletic, leave SS City as the lowest ranked team left in the competition, and Monksville United are seemingly the favourites at this stage.

SS City's run is finally over, but it's a run that they can be proud of, especially with that massive win over RGS Athletic in the third round. Monksville United are through, and with the league program now finished, they can make up for missing out on a Globe Cup spot on H2H by gaining one through the final (not to mention the nice shiny trophy). On the other hand, you have Half Boy FC, beating out quite a few odds to get here, but lucky enough to avoid a lot of the big boys until the final. With their relegation and their wooden spoon confirmed, winning the final would be a big morale booster to the players and the fans, and possibly a springboard to a longer stint in the top flight in a couple of season time.

The offseason was eventful for Legalite clubs in a few ways. First was the opening of the international transfer market, with the International Transfer Board established to greenlight the approval and arrival of players from abroad. “It’s an important next step to the club program”, said Federation of Association Football President Robert Percival at the announcement. “Testing our best against the world’s best comes in many different ways, and one is to improve the opportunities at home. We look to import talent here in Legalese, not just export it.”

In spite of Percival’s comments, the first wave of international transfers was minimal in reputation, and more indicative of future growth, rather than immediate results, with one exception: the acquisition of the striker Sul from DMLK by Bob’s Towing. The fee, rumored to be ten million units, set the early bar for expected costs, but provided the proud side a replacement for the retiring Jimmy Jay, his broken leg suffered in the previous season hastening his move to the technical area as a coach. Two younger players - Pascal Boyle, a striker from Quebecois side Iqaluit Red Army, was sent to Tiberia to join Knights, with Gyori Kartal, the left-winger from Pasargan side Club Stein-los Youth, joining M-League side Francis City.

Rather, the big transfer wasn’t a transfer, per se, but the result of free agency, effectively. Tarquin Waldrop, long-serving keeper for both the Legalese National Team and his home side, Myre Town, faced some tough decisions in seeing the Mudders drop out of the National League: should he stay, or fight for big-time football again? With a fear of being dropped from the National Team XI, Waldrop invoked the relegation release clause in his contract, freeing him to accept any offer he chose. After a brief courting period, he signed a three-year deal with International of Tyrellia, which included a 500,000 unit signing bonus, of which half was used to pay his release from the Mudders.

Meanwhile from across town, the Titans were left fuming after the offseason meetings. As the first winners of the National League, the Tyrellian side had been given a significant advantage in the National Title-deciding Legalese National Championship: Not only did they have the right to host the final regardless of their participation in it, but they also held what was known as the Silver Advantage, after the color of the Shield they won as National League winners. This Silver Advantage guaranteed the National League winners the ability to host both halves of the two-legged First Semifinal with with the National League runners-up, and to advance in the case of a post-extra-time draw after the second leg, rather than have to deal with the spectre of penalties. What nobody expected, however, was for them to actually need the full advantage, their battle with Comunas Cougars the season prior resulting in a 5-5 aggregate draw after extra time of the second match at The Coliseum. As such, the club owners voted to retain the extra time advantage by requiring the team playing the Silver Shield holder to win outright in either semifinal tie, but required slightly more stringent requirements for the rest of it: in order to host both legs of the semifinal ties, the Silver Shield holder would have to also win the Federation Open Cup, effectively coming into the LNC as the double-holder.

For most, that looked to be the end of the dominance seen previously by teams like Titans. For the Tyrellians, it meant something else: challenge accepted.

The National League, Season II: League National-er

First half

For Titans, the opening night match kicked off things just as expected, with a two-nil result in front of 74,000 in The Coliseum, where for ninety minutes, the stands were packed, but not a seat was taken. True to form, Quintus Oxboro lived up to the growing hype, scoring both for the hosts.

Action kicked off across the rest of the league the following day, with Comunas Cougars matching their growing rivals, with a 2-0 win at home over Sagdineo side Coastal United. Bob’s Towing took place in one of the more bizarre matches of the weekend, scoring six in a seeming shootout with Bekknia FC, including two by penalty. Amazingly, the Lakers had a chance to equalize with not just one, but two penalty attempts of their own, but failed to convert - the first on a fingertip save by keeper Ignacio Zern, the other on a complete shank.

The early stages, though, oddly, were extremely close. While Titans jumped out to a two-point lead through the first seven matches, they were closely followed, as one would expect with only four wins at that stage. Among the sides chasing them, The Knights of Tiberia stood out, being the only side yet to lose, with two wins and five draws through seven. That said, it was clear they would need to have more decisive outcomes to factor into the discussion as play continued.

Indeed, the streak ended at seven for Knights, as they fell to Coastal United at home, 3-2. The most surprising result of the later part of the first half, however, went to the Minto Wombats. The Wombats, coming up as the K-League winners, came out of the gate pathetically, with one draw to go with their seven losses, needing eight matches to earn two points total. However, those points came against the most unlikely of sources the Titans. Despite losing two starters - one to injury and one to a sending off - the Wombats proved their might by keeping the Titans out of the goal, gaining a scoreless draw over the defending champs, and favorites to repeat. During that six match run, it was the only time the Titans failed to gain the full three points, sending them to the halfway mark with the league lead, and a total of thirty points. Behind them were, as usual, the Comunas Cougars, who managed five wins in their last six as well to remain on the edge of contention at 25. Further back were the usual suspects of International and LC Capitals, with Coastal United joining them in the fight for a Globe Cup place.

The first bit of the midseason was expected to pose a challenge for most, with a slightly condensed fixture schedule meaning that six matches would be played in four weeks. For a team chasing the top, it could mean opportunity, provided that the teams at the top opened that door. For a team like the Cougars, these four weeks could quickly turn nightmarish, a win over Coastal in Sagdineo being quickly followed by a 4-4 draw at home to Draig Goch, and then a shocking 3-1 loss to The Knights at Protectorate Road in Tiberia. They had a brief chance to recover with a 1-0 win over struggling Plainsview, only to have the lynchpin match face them: a trip to the dreaded Coliseum to face Titans.

Meanwhile, the Titans had shown what is possible when the champion rises to the occasion, as they just refused to lose. They began the stretch with a 2-1 win in Tiberia over City, before heading south to knock off the Captials at National Stadium with a 3-0 result just a few days later. They then rushed home to take the full three over Rhinos, before crossing town to a scoreless draw with International. As such, they came into a critical match with Comunas off of ten points in four matches in under three weeks, making the 3-2 dispatching of the Cougars quite unsurprising. While Rye’s Landing would manage to hold the Titans scoreless at home, limiting them to a draw, the end result was impressive: four weeks, six matches, four wins, two draws, and a twelve point lead in the league with just seven to play, in a season where they had only lost once.

A perfect way for the Titans to go into the Federation Open Cup, as their challenge had one more part to it.

Federation Open Cup

Early Rounds

While the National League had their cluster of matches to kick off the second half of the season, the second division started the Federation Open Cup with the first round legs, bringing in a series of amatuer sides to fill in the gaps. With eighteen spots to join the fourteen National League sides in the second round, the M-League’s fifteen clubs were drawn with five amateur sides to send ten teams on, while the K-League’s eight clubs were joined by eight amateur sides from the Karin Islands to do the same. It turned out to be a poor first round for the amateurs, with eleven of the thirteen drawn against a second-division side, and all eleven losing. The lucky survivors? Armory FC, a side picked from the the intramural players in the league based on the military camp in the northern islands - their first attempt to enter a side in the cup. They would join seven of the eight K-League teams in the second round, with only AFC Straitside’s elimination to the league-leading Sien Bay Pirates occurring in round one.

The draw was a mixed bag for National League sides, as three ties consisted of all-League matchups. Of the other eight, the results contained a few surprises, notably Binchensburg Athletic knocking off Towing at Gamma Arena, as well as Rye’s Landing needing not just a replay, but a re-replay to handle Calcyx Colonial. The lone amateur side, Armory FC, would hold off Francis City at home with a 1-0 win, and was lucky enough to draw another home match, but with a more frightening opposition: the Tyrellia Titans, who were on a mission.

National League Second Half, final Matchdays

Going into Matchday Twenty, the magic number for the Titans was a mere ten points; in short, they could win the National League with three wins and a draw in their last seven matches, with losses and draws by Cougars and International combined also helping their cause. An instant jolt was earned right off the bat, as a victory over Bekknia FC combined with an International draw with Tiberian City and a Cougars loss in Gavelton to the Rhinos, cutting that magic number to five. Round Twenty-one would be a setback, with Bob’s Towing showing enough life to send the Titans out of Gamma Arena with a 4-2 loss, and with Cougars snagging a win over International. However, this was still a minor setback, as Titans would be assured of finishing level on points with merely one more win, and would hoist the shield with nearly any dropped points by Comunas, which would have to wait until Matchday Twenty-three, but was rendered moot by a Titans victory over Coastal United even earlier. The final three matches would be a coronation for them, but one that they took seriously, finishing with an eightteen point lead, a full six games up on second.

As for the battle for the runner-up slot and the double-chance at the national championship, that came down to the wire. Cougars, reeling from title elimination and the 4-2 loss to Rye’s Landing, fell again the following week, this time at home to Bekknia FC. International, Bob’s Towing, and Coastal nipped at their heels, with a trip to Plainsview and Towing set to be the penultimate match.

Federation Open Cup, later rounds

As Tyrellia Titans stood on the verge of wrapping up the National League, their focus turned towards another major challenge - winning the double. Standing in their way during Round Three was Armory FC, though nobody expected them to seriously threaten the champs, even at home. Alas, the pundits were proven right by the 3-0 win for the visitors.

The field left was both predictable and astonishing at once. While sides like Titans, Cougars - the first cup winner - and International were expected, the second division was heavily represented with teams like Stratton FC, Morven Monday, Brecorn City, and the Argyle Warriors still alive; the fact that three of the four were currently in the hunt for the M-League title and promotion likely comes as no surprise. The one oddity, other than K-League cellar dwellers Brecorn City, was Tiberian City, who was well on their way to relegation from the National League. A series of shock results in the cup would put them in an interesting position - a chance to play for the National Championship, and possibly save their place in the National League in the process.

The draw for the quarterfinals bolstered Tiberian City’s case, as while they would travel, their opposition was Stratton FC, one of the weakest sides left. Both Morven Monday and Argyle Warriors had mixed feelings about their draws, as while they were the hosts, they had to face, respectively, Tyrellia Titans and Comunas Cougars. International had, according to most, the best draw, snagging a home date with Brecorn City.

Before the season, the Federation had decided to move the semifinals to neutral sites, with Tiberia’s The Park of the Phoenix and Tyrellia’s The Coliseum the chosen sites. As fate would have it, this caused much humor, as the draw created a Tyrellian derby - Titans v International - that would have to be played away from Tyrellia, and a matchup between Tiberian City and Comunas Cougars that, by necessity, had to be played in Tyrellia. On the plus side, it can be said that no true travel advantage was gained by Titans or International, as they had to travel from the same place to play at another place. If anything, City had the best of it - despite the long travel they knew they’d have to deal with, they were getting Cougars in a stadium that was likely to be not very friendly to them.

While one dream was crushed, another interesting possibility rose again: the third of what was expected to be a total of five matches this season between Titans and Cougars. For Titans, the win would give them the double and the full advantage again. For Cougars, they would already know their fate in the League by then, so it was simply about pride - not to mention the chance to be the first club to win the cup twice.

But first, the Cougars had to survive the final stretch of the league. Despite a few bad losses, they were able to hang on in Plainsview, knocking off Bob’s Towing 1-0, and eliminating them from contention. International and Coastal would both snag 3-0 wins to keep pace, however, and were set to face each other on the last day. For Cougars, it was simple: a win, a draw with an International/Coastal draw or a Coastal win, or even a loss, provided that their nine-goal lead in differential wasn’t caught by Coastal United in their win, would get them the double-chance, and guarantee that there would be two more meetings with Titans after the Cup final.

As it turned out, that’s exactly what Cougars ended up with. Playing conservatively for 80 minutes, they held on to a scoreless draw, while Coastal United jumped out to a 3-1 lead, extended to 4-1 with a half-hour left. International clawed it back to 4-3, but at the final whistle, the Cougars were locked into second, and Coastal United third. International of Tyrellia, saved again by knowing that the cup finalists were both already moving on, would have a shot at the National Championship, but needed to keep the lower-division sides form moving on to lock in a UICA spot.

As for the Cup Final, the implications were, well, as expected. The match, however, was a defensive battle, going all the way to the 120th minute with not a ball hitting the net. As such, penalties were needed, and it took Titans only four rounds to lock in the result.

Meanwhile, in the second division…
The K-League, featuring the clubs from the Karin Islands, added a eighth team to replace the promoting Minto Wombats. SBLS, short for the South Brecorn Luge Society, had been a two-time amateur cup entry, and were the only applicants to the K-League. To pay for the arrival, the Society mortgaged the Luge facility. With a second place finish in their first season, it appears to have been a wise investment. Sien Bay, however, will be bringing National League play to the Kassar Cove for the first time next season.

The stage was set. With Titans winning both the league and cup, the Silver Advantage was fully in place, meaning that the Titans would play the rest of their matches at home, including, provided they made it, the final. The setup as follows, was:

Week One
The opening week started with the First Elimination Round kicking off at midweek, with Sien Bay hosting Coastal, and the Argyle Warriors bringing the National Championship to Francis City for the first time in a battle with International of Tyrellia. In both rounds, the underdogs did their best to hang on, with Sien Bay snagging a 4-3 victory at home, and the Warriors managing to keep a 1-1 draw with the Tyrellians.

Three days later, the weekend would feature a trio of matches, with the first semifinal opening leg joining the first elimination round return legs. The early match saw International take care of business at home, a 3-1 victory giving them the aggregate win of 4-2. The afternoon continued with the leading Pirates crossing the country to take on Coastal in Sadineo, the longest trip of the year for Sien Bay. Whether it was the travel, the superior level of play, or even the location, one thing was for sure: Coastal came out fighting, scoring three goals by the half to walk away with a 5-2 win, taking the result on aggregate 8-6, and setting the stage for a trip to Tyrellia at midweek to open the second elimination round.

The night, however, belonged to the Titans and the Cougars. For the second time this season, they would meet in The Coliseum, and this time, the result mirrored the previous season’s first semifinal, with Comunas holding on to a draw through 90’. The scores level at 1 each, the two teams would prepare to meet again in one week for the next leg.

Week Two
The midweek would open with a single match, this being the second elimination round. Play opened in Tyrellia, with Coastal United visiting International at International Pitch, where the hosts held on to a slim 1-0 lead, which they hoped to hang onto on Saturday night, as the two teams travelled back to the Bekk shores to play in Sagdineo.

On that same Saturday, the afternoon opened with the second leg of the first semifinal, with Comunas Cougars needing a road win in either regular or extra time to advance to the Final, with Tyrellia Titans enjoying the advantage, in spite of the scores being level. Unlike the season before, Comunas did not come back to play, apparently, as Tyrellia scored twice before halftime and twice after, to punch their ticket to the final, with a week off to prepare to welcome the winner of the second semifinal. Comunas, meanwhile, shook off the wounds, and awaited to find out where they were going to open the Second Semifinal.

The Second Elimination Round closed things out that night, with Coastal United managing to knock off International by a 2-0 result, giving them the win on aggregate, 2-1. For the hosts, they would get to relax a little, not needing to travel anywhere for the opening leg of the second semifinal in just a few days.

Week Three
While the Titans prepped, the Cougars made the long flight to Sagdineo to face Coastal United, for the first midweek match of the championship for them. Amazingly, the travel apparently didn’t bother them, as they pulled off a 1-0 victory on the road, and simply needed to hold Coastal level on the return trip.

Of course, that was easier said than done the followin Saturday, as Coastal United jumped out to a two goal lead by halftime, and held it until the 82nd minute, when Jake Detzler scored to cut the lead to one, and level the aggregate total. Detzler would strike again in extra time, giving the Comunas Cougars a 3-2 aggregate win, and sending them to the National Championship final, their first in history.

It's over! It's over! The 26th season of Astograthian football, brought to you by that Polarian airline there - if you didn't think it was all over, it is now!

First Division

Sam Ashtree, Sam Ashtree, Sam Ashtree. The press wouldn't shut up about it in the off-season. All of Rumiatzi, all of Astograth was Sam Ashtree and his 50 million diru transfer to Royal Rumiatzi. Most figured he was an alright lad, good enough for Ulsa, but there was no way he'd live up to the hype - and losing at Oyardo in the first match of the season was a dismal omen. Steadily, though, Royal Rumiatzi and Sam Ashtree picked up steam and burst ahead after a Euran brace landed them a 3-2 win over Ituraitz FC. Consistency was of the essence, as the Knights kept their clean sheets and Ashtree, set up by Echazarreta and McCluey, made all the difference as they snatched narrow wins from the toughest grounds in Astograth - or outscored the opposition, as a 5-4 over Echegoyan FC ended with an Ashtree hat-trick and a McCluey brace. Ashtree, Ashtree, Ashtree, it wasn't just the press anymore: his name was chanted from the stands of Knights' Stadium, cursed in pubs across Astograth and circled in red on all managers' notebooks. His 28 goals in 33 matches carried Rumiatzi to a league win with two matchdays still to play; nobody cared how much he cost when Aintôrthea Durosa lifted their record-equalling seventh league title.

Ituraitz FC got off to a rough start, what with Namine Nagatomo's last-minute transfer and expecting her to direct the team from the middle, but a hard-fought win over Astograth University proved to be the turning point as Voronin and Nagatomo worked out a strong understanding. Illich-Svitych and Richelieu's partnership was effective as ever, and crucial in the 2-1 win over Royal Rumiatzi that saw both of them score - but dropping points to Oyardo, Royal Association and East Railway all in a row made the gap to the Knights impossible to overcome.

Astograth University, for their part, improved immensely under new manager Moon Dust, though they went from tussling at the top of the table to fighting for second with Ituraitz FC to snatching third place and Champions’ Cup qualification from under Urbizania Wanderers, who fell on the last matchday to an Ituraitz that really needed to let off steam. The AU once again had the least goals conceded in the league: Ayoro Barinaga and Nate Parkinson dedicated themselves to holding possession, and any breakthroughs were quickly doused by the experience pair of Fernand Girard and Haitz Maistegi. This and Gaitzka Ogara were the bedrock of their success, a focus on controlling the pace of the match and sudden, lightning-fast attacks down the wing that ended in a shot or cross to the forwards. The fans are eager to see what Moon Dust can continue to do, and whether they can aim for the title next season.

Urbizania Wanderers were, on the whole, disappointed to go from prime title candidates to finishing in fourth place; it seems no team can aspire to win the First Division three in a row. Yuaneizu Iribarnegaray's replacing of Edwardo Baez did not sit well with many and their fears were well-founded, as the young Iturributan struggled to cope with the pressure of him as the team's fulcrum, clearly not used to being used in that capacity and performing awkwardly. Not to use him as a scapegoat either - it would perhaps be in Lusa's best interests to recognise that Baez fulfilled a role that few indeed can competently carry out, and a shift in strategy may be in order. Regardless, the defense was customarily solid and Juan Pablo Reyes dazzled on his début season, at times overshadowing a distinctly average Laborious Hawk - though after the intensity of the last two seasons, a relatively low period is to be expected.

Echegoyan FC, meanwhile, continue to not really impress, with little in the way of standout performances or winning consistency considering their players and budget. Garoa Larzondo has been let go, as the board have greater ambitions than more underperformance - though they may have finished fifth and in the Globe Cup, Echegoyan spent most of the season scrabbling in the mid-table. On the other hand, Athletic Club Rumiatzi are ecstatic at having finished sixth, Guayabelense manager Roberto Cornejo and Guayabelense striker Leónida Brêgoô leading them to their third-ever Globe Cup qualification. Gotorlekua is once again regularly sold out, and its tenants' ambition finally has reason to be.

Gortz United, edged on head-to-head results by Athletic Club Rumiatzi, were happy that their open, attacking football again served them well, but are still deeply frustrated at being unable to finish any higher than seventh. In view of this, manager Gito Pizan has been thanked for his service and dismissed, the club and its president Dei Ormache aiming to break the glass cieling lying between Gortz and "making it" in the First Division.

Separated by a mere four points, hinting to the ever-increasing competitiveness of the First Division, were Oyardo FC, Athletic Club Olarria, East Railway, Gesterlake FC and South Factory. Oyardo FC found a more than adequate replacement for Eguzki Berriex in Sameban striker Julius Carrera but were otherwise lacking, and it has been suggested that a newer face in charge might be just what they need. Athletic Club Olarria and East Railway repeated last season's runs without much of note; it's worth pointing out how East Railway were off to a brilliant start of the season, however, even soundly beating Royal Rumiatzi, but the wear and a thin squad brought them down to size. Gesterlake FC were much diminished by the departure of their best players, but Vaudrail nevertheless managed to maintain a solid discipline and clear style that kept them afloat; Syndicatian centre-back Andrew Watson also put in a number of memorable performances that have him as the fan-favourite "hard man" of Gesterlake. South Factory made small improvements but at least stayed well clear of the relegation zone; it is yet to be seen if it is enough for Svennis Moller to stay on for another season.

Ten and twelve points off South Factory were Lermendia FC and Royal Association, respectively, whom were both very glad to stay in the First Division, while Urizaharra FC diced with death and only saved themselves thanks to a miraculous final win over Echegoyan FC. Antiguoko FC fought admirably but were outclassed and outscored at every turn of the season. At the very bottom though, First Division stalwarts Blue Mountain Range and Ituraitz Victory crumbled, the former's midfield leaving forward Power marooned and unable to score, the latter's defense leaking more than a Rumiatzi Sentinel press report. They'll spend next season in the second tier atoning for their sins, but neither look especially likely to bounce back.

Drama! Laughter! Heartbreak! Tragedy! This second division season had it all and some even paid attention, with growing attendances and TV revenue! Army United, the team founded some seasons ago from the merger of two run-down historic clubs, Rumiatzi United and The Army Club, have razed all opposition with a stunning 114 goals in 42 and will be making their awaited début in the First Division.

Joining them will be Athletic Club Yungoitio, who cruelly edged Basabe Old Boys on head-to-head results... only for the team cruelly cheated last time, 5th-placed Ximun Orieta FC, to beat BOB in the playoff final, in a Grand Duke's Stadium full to the rafters of curious Ituraitzi and Basabians.

Who said these promotion playoffs were a bad idea?

Dockyard Oaks and Islanders were the likely candidates as they went back and forth throughout the season, only for the surprising Sporting Olarria to come out of nowhere, beat both and plant themselves in second place. Not that it won them anything, but they and Chinchartu Lehoi become the first teams from the League's most recent expansion to win promotion to the Second Division.

In the Round of 64, all 18 First Division sides and the 14 best-ranked Second Division clubs are seeded against the 24 third-tier and 8 lowest-ranked Second Division teams. The result is, inevitably, a massacre.

Or usually, at least. They've been getting rowdier, nowhere better seen than when Chinchartu Lehoi beat Royal Rumiatzi away, and it took extra-time for the Knights to turn it around and save some face on the return leg.

Urbitzo FC deepened Ituraitz Victory's crisis by knocking them out on penalties, while South Factory and East Railway were no match for Ituraitz FC and Royal Rumiatzi respectively. Mauritza FC valiantly defeated Urbizania Wanderers at Cherketzo Arena but were unable to keep their lead in the second leg. Astograth University and Miners FC played out a scoreless draw and then a back-and-forth extra-time second leg that ended in the AU advancing to the quarters, a Nate Parkinson header deciding it. Antiguoko FC took down Athletic Club Olarria in a pair of brilliant performances from Mendiko Dicharry, while Echegoyan FC struggled to see off the second-tier Ibarbe Youth and Oyardo FC confidently eliminated Scarlettville Rough Riders.

Urbitzo were no match for Ituraitz, Astograth University tore apart Antiguoko and Echegoyan knocked out Oyardo without trouble, but all eyes were on Royal Rumiatzi and Urbizania Wanderers this round. Playing out a growing rivalry, they drew at both grounds and only penalty kicks could separate them, the defending champions winning out after a dreadfuly miss by Urralburu and a save on McCluey.

For the first time ever, the semifinals featured nothing but four of the very best teams in Astograth. Urbizania Wanderers saw off an Ituraitz FC that was evidently more concerned with how the league was going, while Astograth University failed to take a lead to Silanes Park and paid dearly for it when Baudouin Richelieu met Laurin Mankisidor's free-kick with a half-volley that took Echegoyan to their first Royal Cup final in six years, to take on the defending champions.

It would be a stretch to suggest Echegoyan FC are cursed when it comes to Royal Cup finals... but it remains a fact that, with this one included, they have played six and won only one. Regardless, this one didn't come easily for Wanderers. Both arrived frustrated by the league finish and wanting to round out the season with some silverware and a ticket to the Cygnus Cup.

Echegoyan FC opened the scoring on twelve minutes, a long free-kick by Ekhi Subies was just barely connected by Yeremi Belaustigetigoitia and headed out by Matthew Di Martine, only to fall to the hooves of left-back Arctic Lily – with a clean shot on goal and aiming for the far post, Polentzi Gayategi couldn't reach it.

The equaliser came a scant seven minutes later, when Juan Pablo Reyes broke down the right. Peter Lennert dummied a run to draw Lily off Reyes, and with the added space the Valladar sent in a curving cross that met Iivari Kaitanen's head as he rushed into the box, the impact sending the ball straight into the net.

The pace of the match settled down after that, with Echegoyan controlling the midfield and the Wanderers defense impassable, until the referee called for extra-time to decide the winner at Grand Duke's Stadium. The winning goal came in the 106th minute, just after the break, when Iribarnegaray caught Subies sleeping and an attack down the right with Reyes and Lennert broke down; a mis-hit clearance by Kyle Cooper landed some ways away from the box, at the feet of Iribarnegaray, who shot at goal but was blocked by Morten Salo.

It fell to Laborious Hawk. He feinted a shot from out far, sending Benitzaizin sprawling, then sent a ball up, far and long, to the left post, where Federico Ferreyra appeared to smash it past goalkeeper Agoztar Ilarduya, his marker Vidoslav Kovacic sliding past a moment too late. Wanderers' fifth Royal Cup, and the first club to twice win it two times running.

GLOBE CUP 49: GRAND DUKE'S STADIUM, RUMIATZI (90,000)

The FAF would like to humbly submit Grand Duke's Stadium as final site for the upcoming 49th Globe Cup; with seating for 90 thousand people, the ground is by far the largest in all of Astograth. Making full use of its multipurpose pitch and track, the arena hosts a variety of sporting events throughout the year; as a rule the only football games to regularly take place at Grand Duke's are the Royal Cup final and promotion playoff finals at the very end of the season as well as the Astograthian national team's home matches, which is why simply being there can be a dream come true for Astograthian players.

Besides those already mentioned, Grand Duke's Stadium has also hosted the very first Ides of March Cup, contested annually by the league champions of Astograth and Polar Islandstates, the second Polarian Vennskap Shield, the final of the eighth Copa Rushmori, the third place matches of the 48th Cup of Harmony and the 45th & 53rd Baptisms of Fire; the 23rd Copa de Campeones final won by Liria Prizren over Ituraitz FC, the 45th Champions’ Cup final won by Turoki Tide against Raynor City United, and most importantly the World Cup 62 Final won by The Holy Empire over Bears Armed.

The stadium itself is very modern and fully equipped to stage any sporting tournament, with retractable stands that extend over the track, allowing for an increased capacity and closer view during events that don't require the use of the athletics track. The FAF promise to provide all concerned with the same pleasantness that was experienced at the 45th Champions’ Cup final: utmost security and ease of transit for all fans, top accommodation and training facilities for teams and their companions, as well as utmost cooperation with the local authorities to stage a truly memorable encounter. Commemorative plaques will be installed alongside those of the winners of the aforementioned matches and no expense will be spared in the ensuing fireworks celebration; the presence of Grand Duke Lastur himself, as a great fan of football, is all but certain as well.

As of late, Alle has pulled away with the first place spot, becoming this year's Gold Loewe. A gigantic shock is DKXI, who has come out of nowhere to vie for the 2nd and 3rd spots with Loewe, Nordbergen, and Gruenwalder. Bahnhof, Swillburg U, and Keltischdorf are all tied up close to 30 points and could be dangerous. The bottom is all very close, with teams in 9th position down all within 3 points. This includes a struggling KBFC, who has faded into the relegation spot. As the home stretch comes close, every game will count for every team.

LIGA MAHARLIKA
Season 2017

After the events that transpired in the World Cup 67 Qualifer against Eastfield Lodge, the nation then known as Sangti has been renamed to The Royal Barangay, with a new government led by Antonio Arias. WIth this, he sought to reorganize the way sport is run in the nation, after woeful performances in the 13th IBC and the 67th World Cup Qualifiers.

WIth the new KPMB (Konsehong Pampalakasan ng Maharlikang Barangay), the nation organized another season of the league, albeit starting at January of 2017, and with a revised structure. The restructuring of the league was in its climax, as 18 former Primera Liga Teams become 16 Liga Maharlika Primera teams.

18 Teams competed in the top division of the football pyramid in the Royal Barangay. There were two newly promoted sides, as Real Nonasa, the "Sangtian Club of the Century" and Locomotiva Nandezfer, winners and runners-up of the Old Campeonato respectively, replaces FC Jocolim, Sangtiola Nandezfer, Girondins Tossan and Ryne Savio, who went to the opposite direction.

There were also a mixup of managers, as the appointment of Rick Martinez as manager of the national team left Deportivo Nespa without a manager. In a few days, they signed Julius Chaves from the The Silver Iron Skulls, who in turn hired former NT manager Jaime Faltado. Three more clubs replaced managers. The disastrous season for Jester Averilla meant that he was replaced by former NT assistant Niccolo Abundo. Wenefrido Dumale replaced Arden Labindalawa as manager of Gabelona, while Stewart Kutch, former manager of FC Jocolim, takes the reins from Jerous Co at Real Rosavilla.

This will see many clubs signing foreigners. The most famous of them were Goal Blossom of the Equestrian States; the first female and non-human player in the league, and Jared Anderson, of neighbors The Licentian Isles.

Real Tiagosan and CD Viocla are in the Globe Cup spots, while Atletico Radi and Real Cintore follow them closely. With three matches to play, Nonasa suddenly slide into the relegation spots, while Nandezfer was rooted to the bottom for some matchdays, and both sides needed a win in their next matchdays to remain in the hunt for survival. Meanwhile at the top, Cintore has emerged as a threat to leaders Racing Xinghua between midseason and now. However, they lost against Rosavilla in Rosaleda. This loss, coupled with Xinghua's draw, increased the gap to six points, with nine points still available.

With the bottom two facing each other, a loss meant relegation for one of them, but that doesn't always happen. A draw relegated both sides in a gloomy day in the Estacio de Trenes. Racing Xinghua's loss to CF Vanie, coulped with Deportivo and Cintore recording 4-2 wins, made the top 3 very interesting in the final day of the season. Real Tiagosan also beat Saint Etudes to keep in touch with the leaders with an outside chance to win the title. Meanwhile back at the bottom, Gabelona and Rumasi are now in the relegation spots after Gabelona lost to Cintore and Rumasi managing a victory against Viocla.

Rumasi's loss to Carrubonieta signified their relegation from the top division after Gabelona managed to beat Carbonel, 4-3. At the top however, Real CIntore piled the pressure more on Racing Xinghua by beating Nonasa, while Deportivo did likewise, beating Saint Etudes, which dropped the latter into the relegation zone. The pressure was alleviated by Racing Xinghua's 3-1 win over Tiagosan, which all but ended Tiagosan's title hopes. Tiagosan however qualified for their third straight Globe Cup.

Five clubs enter the final day with uncertainty floating around them. Rosavilla is virtually safe, as there will be a big match at the Estable de Caballeros where Wanko meets Gabelona, in which the loser may be relegated. That will also make CF Vanie virtually safe. If Saint Etudes manage however to win, Gabelona will be in big trouble unless they beat Wanko.

SInce the 2013-14 season, there has not been an exciting final day of the season. But this is it, with Real Cintore holding their destiny against Balompie, the big match will be at the Nueva Estadio de Isla Nespa, where Deportivo face Racing Xinghua. Cintore will win the title if they win and Deportivo win by at least the same margin. Racing will win the title with a draw. Deportivo meanwhile must win by at least two goals and hope that Cintore fail to win their match with Balompie.

The Euran Football Association’s Euraleague
Recap on Season 16

The big story of the last year was Eura’s stunning triumph over Polar Islandstates in the World Cup. However, despite the upcoming Season 17 running alongside the World Cup 67 qualifiers without the usual year gap to make it two years between cycles, we will not allow Euraleague to become overlooked. Last season, the season before the World Cup, was in its own right quite a triumph. For the first time Euraleague would have two Champions Cup slots, which just went to show how much progress it has been making in recent years. It started with the fourth iteration of the revived Endemia Cup, where Directus triumphed with relative ease after beating Capital Kingsland 4-1 in the final, who had already knocked out troubled Bastion.

The Charity Shield is usually an unremarkable prelude to the league and cup season, but this one – between Directus and Bastion – was a rather shocking indication of the direction in which Bastion were headed. Directus destroyed Bastion 6-1, an embarrassing domestic debut for both Apoxian defender Isner and 16 year old Syndicatian left back Rhys West. Bastion were clearly missing Skorji Oslograd already, not to mention the retired Sam Needle and Daley Hart and surprisingly sold John Gomer. Directus were superb by comparison, and looked very much like title contenders going into the league season.

As it turned out, they were contenders in a largely three horse race. However, it would be Spartangrad who won the biggest honour, and they did it for the first time in many years. They scored an incredible 112 goals to propel themselves to the title on 80 points, finishing four points ahead of Directus and five ahead of Revolutionaries after those two drew 2-2 on the last day of the season, while Spartangrad thrashed Suttonville 6-0. Sam Thomas scored three in that game, and he was the key figure in the title win, bagging 30 goals and 12 assists. That said their attacking mantra, with Parsons/Savitskiy and Adams/Churchilli on the flanks and a strong midfield trio of Haraldsson, Evans and Acuna, was very much a team effort.

Directus and Revolutionaries were both a bit unlucky in the end, Directus in particular who had their own impressive goal tally of 108 but a number of draws they couldn’t convert into wins cost them a comfortable title win. For Revolutionaries it was another formative season and despite finishing 3rd largely thanks to the outstanding performances of John Spartan. They looked like the most complete team in the league towards the end of the season and will likely be favourites next year with their new signings, which shall be discussed later, taken into account. Ulsa finished a respectable fourth but comfortably away from the title, despite a surprisingly outstanding season for Sam Ashtree who scored 24 league goals, by far a career best. However, the damage done by losing Craig Sinclair was pretty evident.

For the first time in history the 5th place in the Gold League would bring a team Globe Cup football, and with Bastion’s troubles plain to see it was very much up for grabs amongst the teams who usually push for top half finishes. Holdenberg were the best of the bunch, finishing in 5th thanks to a very capable squad, but in particular the contribution of Pablo Dohi, the Sameban star bagging 17 goals and 15 assists. But the icing on the cake for them was winning the National Cup, beating Directus 3-1 on penalties in the final to win their first silverware in a very long time. Lajuno came close behind them, spurred on by the fantastic young Mytanar striker Egil Fomitschow, a loanee, who bagged 20 goals to secure 6th for them. Then in 7th came Bastion. They had a poor season, plagued by the inability to defend a lead. The only bright spots were the fairly consistent scoring rate of Bryn Thomas and Iturributan Andima Etchaleku’s performances on the wing.

Honeybadgers and Hornchurch followed up Bastion in the table with fairly bog standard upper mid table performances, but Oakstone were the big surprise in the top half, finishing 10th after a superb after surviving their first season up in 16th previously. Despite an awful defensive record, the performances of Bell in midfield and Gould up front were enough to push them up so high. At the bottom, Mountainside and Suttonville were relegated comfortably as expected, but there was real drama as AFC Mayville – back in the top flight after a long absence at the expense of their rivals – stayed in the Gold League by only a couple of points. And they did so at the expense of their rivals, who lost 1-0 to Holdenberg City and a Pola Grabnyak goal on the last day, while AFC managed a draw at Bastion that summed up the capital club’s season.

Unsurprisingly Spartangrad’s Clark Robinson won Manager of the Season, while his 30 goal forward and Golden Boot winner Sam Thomas won Player of the Season on top of his Forward of the Season award, narrowly beating John Spartan. The latter did win Young Player of the Season deservedly as well as Midfielder of the Season, while Chris Waller snatched the goalkeeper award and Nick Feeney deservedly was named Defender of the Season.

AFC Mayville stayed in the Gold League by the skin of their teeth last season at the expense of their local rivals, and under Nicky Moore they have set out to stay up again. Miles McDonald has come in from Suttonville after an impressive top flight debut season, as has winger Jude Yates from Mountainside. They haven’t lost anyone in the transfer window, and at the same time talented 19 year old centreback Matt Edding has come through the ranks to help reinforce their back line.

Bastion struggled to 7th last season, a disastrous regression after a couple of years of progress led mainly by the presence of Skorji Oslograd. It would cost Alan Elroy his job as Bastion are now eight seasons without a league title. There are reasons to be hopeful for this Bastion team, such as talented Apoxian centreback Isner who did well in his first season in the Gold League. Eye Barsa is still as classy as he always was, and Andima Etchaleku has been a key addition in midfield amongst a bunch of ageing players. John Mallard is also beginning to look like a solid long term investment up front, and for this season caretaker manager John Greaves – appointed on a permanent basis in the summer after taking over from Elroy mid-season – has made another signing.

Controversial Mytanar winger Miroslav Janda is that signing. He cost £9.5m but is a consistent goalscorer at this level though his temperament and his crosses need to be worked upon. It is also worth noting that the two young Syndicatian fullbacks who were thrown into the mire last season, particularly Rhys West who started 30 games at just 16, managed to put in respectable performances. Both of them could be a regular feature if they keep up their form, particularly Robert Morgan who has now actually taken over from departing Horvat as a regular.

That said, this team is still undermined by numerous weaknesses and an ageing squad. The mediocrity of first team regulars like Cruft, Marner, Cotterill, and now even the formerly potent Bryn Thomas threaten to make this another season to forget.

Brigham finished a solid 12th last year, but maybe could’ve done better. They’ll be aiming to move up the table though after actually sliding down it one place last year. They’ve lost the experience of Volk Savanev up front but he was probably past it anyway, as was Nicholas Kerr – in their place they’ve made four young talented signings. Karl Cotrell, Hakan Abt and Thomas Kay are the three new members of a rebuilt midfield while Vinko Horvat has realised he’s no longer good enough for Bastion, and so he’s joined to help solidify Brigham’s back line. 10th would not be an unreasonable expectation for Brigham.

United did incredibly well to finish 13th last season despite failing to strengthen, but they’ve been picked apart in the summer and now they look like certain candidates for the drop. John Mattinson isn’t a bad signing up front, but the rest of their team has been gutted. Losing Carl Brommis to Directus was unavoidable; such a talented keeper couldn’t stay here for long. But the losses of Chris Peters and Charlie Harris to Hornchurch and Holdenberg respectively, two bigger but not much more massive clubs, will hurt big time and shows a lack of ambition at the club. Even though they’ve made £19.3m in player sales this summer, they’ve only spent £1.9m, and at this level that isn’t sustainable on the field even if it does boost the finances. United are down.

Directus did well to secure Champions Cup qualification last season, but will be disappointed they didn’t run surprise champions Spartangrad closer for the title. That said their squad is still very good and this season they have talented young centreback Derek Millson back from a loan to add to the potential lineup. Otherwise they’ve had little transfer activity, apart from in goal where they’ve effectively swapped goalkeepers. Ever since Daniel Belgrave left to spend his last few years of playing in Polar Islandstates, they’ve been reliant on Ryan Jones, a decent keeper but never really quality enough for the team he was at.

Jones was moved on finally to the returning Farrenton Athletic, and coming the other way from Culpapy United’s exodus was Carl Brommis. Brommis has been one of the best Euran goalkeepers for a few years now, and he’s only 25. Directus will not be favourites this year like they were last year, but it is important not to underestimate them. Their outfield weakness is probably their ageing fullbacks who are not quite as dominant as they used to be, but in midfield the impressive Maas Fox is gradually replacing Bill Riley. If Fox does as well for Directus as he seems to be starting to do with his national team, his linking up with Dardan, Navratil and Patrelyak could make Directus an unstoppable force.

It’s safe to say that Falourr probably underperformed last season. However, this season they have a chance to move up the table with the emergence of the talented Buck Manning, and Armando Elevado proving to be a real bargain in midfield. They’ve built their squad up big time in the summer, making three key signings which will be particularly important to their progress. Toby Hayes was the standout performer for Mountainside last season and the winger, who is a surprise inclusion for Eura’s World Cup 67 qualifying squad, could be a fruitful signing. Sean Hayward is a very young striker who impressed at Mayville Town last year, while Matt Maher from the same club is experienced and will add defensive solidity.

Farrenton are back. Their return to the Gold League went surprisingly badly after many thought they might cruise to safety. However they have returned to the top flight once more, this time with a strong squad and some good signings. They blitzed Silver League last season in record fashion, racking up 88 points putting them 21 clear of their nearest rivals. This time they have some real stars in their team, particularly £6.2m goalkeeper Ryan Jones, experienced Spartangrad dynamo Kimi Houberg, young Sameban winger Eugene Sabattini, striker Grant Harrod and the powerful midfielder Josh Caig. A good season lies ahead for them.

Holdenberg were absolutely outstanding last season. They made sweeping changes to their team, particularly the midfield, and those changes worked. They finished well in the league, securing Globe Cup football in 5th, and a cup run ended in a surprise final victory over Directus to win their first silverware in years. They haven’t disposed of any players ruthlessly this time round, but they have further improved their squad by bringing in hot prospect Charlie Harris. The 20 year old centreback was secured for £5m, a sound long term investment on a player who could be a Euran regular for years to come. With Bastion in the mire and Lajuno unbalanced, they will fancy their chances at getting 5th again – or maybe even higher if any of the big boys slip up.

HOLDENBERG CITY

They did it! Or just about, anyway. Holdenberg City overcame a club crisis to eventually survive without too much fuss, mainly thanks to the efforts of Alan Dabix, Keith Rowland and Pola Grabnyak. Grabnyak isn’t the same goal machine he was last time he was in Eura but he did a decent enough job, while Rowland is starting to look like the real deal up front. The consistent talisman was of course Alan Dabix, controlling the midfield in his particularly authoritative fashion. Now City have made a big signing, that of Rudy Valencia, the best player in San Jose Guayabal, Rudy Valencia.

Their talismanic midfielder cost City £12.1m, but they are clearly hoping he will work with Dabix behind him and Rowland and Grabnyak in front to lift City up the table. It would be nice for them if they didn’t have to battle relegation every year. The signing of young Licentian midfielder Conor Thompson might also help the cause, while the rather limited and ageing forward Darren Wood was offloaded from the wage bill.

Dominik Davidenko was an adequate replacement for Guy Stamp for sure, in fact he was one of the bargains of last season. But Honeybadgers are a well-rounded team and might feel a bit let down that they could only finish 8th last year while Holdenberg and Lajuno seized on Bastion’s weakness. That said, they have a very good team and despite a summer devoid of transfer activity, I doubt they will fall down the table at all. They might struggle to move up it though.

A 9th place finish last season for Hornchurch was not a let down, but like Honeybadgers they will feel they could’ve done better. And in the summer they’ve suffered a hard blow in losing their talisman up front, Sameban Julius Carrera. The club couldn’t refuse as Oyardo FC of Astograth came in with a big offer of £20m, a club record sale. Regardless it is a disappointing loss and they’ve been unable to secure a replacement, which mounts more pressure on Liam Carling to keep the goals flowing. They did do some good business in midfield however, replacing David Moore with Chris Peters, a decent enough signing. However without Carrera a minor slide seems inevitable.

Two sixth place finishes in a row make Lajuno an increasingly regular feature near the top of the table, but they will surely feel that they can finish higher if they perform this season. A big loss is that they won’t have Egil Fomitschow this year after he returned to his parent club, but once again Lajuno have filled their striker gap sufficiently with Jordan Jarvis, a highly rated forward who had a great debut season in the Gold League last year. With Joe Robel hitting form, who knows how well they could do with a bit of luck?

Sameban international right back Dario Ragili came in from Rivet for £2.8m, while another addition to Oakstone’s definite weak spot – the defence – was made in the form of Henry Gibson, Mayville Town’s teenage centreback. They’ll continue progressing this season.

It seems like Revolutionaries are finally gelling together as the team they can be, and this is likely their year. Ross Ramsden, Eamon Power and Kieran Kane might be slightly past their peak, and Simon Xavier obviously past it, but the rest of the squad have come together perfectly. The midfield in particular is deadly, and John Spartan – one of the best players of last season in the country – could be crucial to their title hopes. However, the one thing Revolutionaries were really missing was a class striker. Despite the valiant efforts of James Brecon, most of their goals came from midfield and Brecon simply won’t cut it as a title winning striker.

So Revolutionaries splashed out again, this time on a very risky deal – albeit a risky deal they had to take. Ambale Deniau, the deadly Saugeais striker from Arcon, couldn’t refuse going to a club like Revolutionaries. But the 29 year old came at an extortionate cost, £30m, which puts a lot of pressure on him to live up to his price tag. However it would not be surprising in the slightest if he was the final piece in the Revolutionaries puzzle, and they will be hoping he can guide them to the title. They must be the favourites this time round.

FINALLY! Spartangrad are champions again, and it is almost entirely thanks to Sam Thomas. The striker has just had the best year of his career, helping Eura to a World Cup win and winning the title for his club team. Now though the pressure will be on to do it again, but it seems unlikely they will repeat the feat in consecutive years with Revolutionaries so strong and Directus likely to be hurting from finishing 2nd. They have brought in a better goalkeeper mind, replacing Vincent James (who decided to finish on a high and retire at just 32) with Atletik Thessia expat Andy Quinn, who returns to Eura for a questionable fee of £11.5m. Spartangrad haven’t really changed much elsewhere, after all why would they, but they have offloaded Kimi Houberg somewhat surprisingly. One suspects that Rhys Gibbons, the 18 year old centreback, may get his chance this season after a successful loan spell in Apox.

Ulsa will be a little disappointed that they could not challenge for the title last season, but given some of the losses from their squad – primarily Craig Sinclair – it was far from a disaster. However, shocking events at the club this summer have thrown away any way of predicting how they’ll do this time. With a few days left of the transfer window, Ulsa had done nothing in the market. They seemed content with their defence, the best in the league, and while Christian Sanchez had been a let down in midfield he was good enough to stay. They were beaten to Miroslav Janda, a potential replacement for Colin Nelson, by Bastion. Everything seemed quiet.

Then the news broke; Royal Rumiatzi, for some reason, saw fit to make an unrefusable £50m offer for Sam Ashtree. On the pitch Ashtree, who had just enjoyed the best season of his career, was a big loss, but £50m – a record fee in the history of Euran football – was still a massive coup for Ulsa. They immediately went for two targets they had otherwise not really had the money to buy available, two very talented targets indeed. First they rescued Ryan King from his misery at Teva FC in United Gordonopia for £23m, a risky but potentially brilliant investment. Then they spent £12.5m on Valladares international Ruben Morantes. The midfielder is a fantastic player, and this deal is being considered by many to be an absolute bargain. However losing Ashtree has left Ulsa bare up front – Nicky Martin returns to prominence once again but he’s old now, and Phil Gulliver has yet to prove himself. Ulsa are definitely the dark horse.

Whether it's a good thing that there are now large gaps even among the top teams is up for discussion; what isn't was Alexsandr Kulikov's continued dominance of Iturributan pitches, dealing out life and death as he sees fit from his commanding position as pillar of Petter Bielsen's Iturributa United. The four Iturributan Derbies, with two wins for Sporting, one for United and one awful scoreless draw, hardly factored into the overall results - a far cry from the inaugural season, when they were so close title had to be decided by a special playoff match between the two. Sporting are certainly not amused, playing good football but faltering at crucial times and being reduced to fighting off Independent Garitzeta for second place.

And Independent Garitzeta would've finished second too, if it weren't for that meddling Iturributa Racing Club! Beaten on head-to-head results, Independent Garitzeta travelled to Old City Stadium to play the already-crowned Iturributa United on the final matchday, while Sporting Iturributa paid a visit to Iturributa Racing... there's no evidence of malicious intent, but Iturributa United fielded a reserve team, were generally quite laid back and lost 2-1 to Independent, though they were foiled by a dubious penalty at The Hippodrome and a diving header from Larissa Souza that clinched a 3-2 win for Sporting. Classic Sporting.

Further down, Garitzeta Racing Club upped their game toward the end of the season and came within spitting distance of also being involved in the battle for second, while Freedom FC comfortably qualified for the Globe Cup ahead of Langaraitz Rovers, who put in a solid run to finish a respectable sixth. Seventh is not respectable for Iturributa Racing Club, however, and it seems that their crisis runs much deeper than could be solved by the dismissal of former manager Estebe Bularte. Sorokin's Old Boys managed to finish eighth but never looked comfortable in their play, being forced to abandon their highly-attacking tactics; Guenara Defender, meanwhile were fortunate that there was somebody worse than them. Poor Baker's Eleven return to the second tier, despite looking so promising upon their promotion three seasons ago.

Now it gets interesting! Iturributa Racing Club and Freedom FC put on the best show of the round, taking it to extra-time only for Iturributa Racing to score, Freedom to equalise and then the penalties decided it should be Iturributa Racing onto the quarterfinals. Garitzeta Racing saw off Focus FC, Sporting Iturributa scored in extra-time to knock out a spirited Sorokin's Old Boys, as did Langaraitz Rovers with Uzio Blackstar. Baker's Eleven eliminated the lowly Erretana United, it took penalties for Guenara Defender to do the same to Providence Mytanars, and Iturributa United crushed Independent Garitzeta. Finally, in a clash of second-tier sides it was Eagles FC who took the clear advantage.

A Racing Derby in the quarterfinals! Garitzeta proved they had the upper hand, however, further sinking Iturributa Racing into humiliation; elsewhere Baker's Eleven only just managed to beat Guenara Defender, Sporting Iturributa lost at Langaraitz Rovers but won the shootout that followed and Iturributa United scored four at home and away against Eagles FC, ending the dream of the only second-tier side to make it this far this season.

It looked like it would be another thrilling Iturributan Derby in the President's Cup final, but Baker's Eleven nearly soured the deal by holding United to a draw and not going down easily in the return leg; Garitzeta Racing did spoil it by equalising against Sporting at Letatzadur and managing a smash-and-grab win at Old City Stadium, to book their first final against Iturributa United.

It was a matchup that pitted the powerful league champions against fourth-placed Garitzeta Racing Club; there have been upsets in the President's Cup final but this season would not be the case. Marcelinho Carnavalense secured the away win for Iturributa United on the first leg, tapping it in after a Jordan Montgomery shot came off the post.

The second leg was more lively, Garitzeta Racing equalising the tie early on with a marvellous blasted shot from Ilari Usun and continued pressure upon the defenders, learning to slip behind Page and Koenigsted when they pushed forward to overlap with the wingers. Into the second half, an Usun pass left Erramun Galkeran one-on-one against the goalkeeper, and it was only Alexis Sand's quick reflexes that kept Garitzeta Racing from taking the aggregate lead.

The stalemate was broken on a corner. Garitzeta expected Næss to send it to the far post, where the lanky Lakoste stood to meet it; it went to the near post, Nauzeau Roga climbed higher than anyone and made it 2-1. Kulikov then put the result beyond doubt after a flowing move with Pristina Shine left him clear on goal, needing only to disdainfully chip the keeper. The Mytanar pulled off his shirt and basked in the acclaim of Old City Stadium, vibrating with celebration. Iturributa United's second President's Cup, and a shot at the Cygnus Cup to boot.

It's about time Old City Stadium regained its place in the world. An ancient stadium with mystique woven into the very concrete of its structure, Antzinako Estadioa is the home of the two Iturributan giants - United and Sporting, bitter rivals, divided into East and West Ends. Week in and week out, teams from across the Free Republic pay a visit to the colossus of Old City district. Every Iturributan dreams of playing there - either for or against the two greats, but ideally with the black-and-white of the national team.

In yonder days, Old City Stadium and its tenants were the terror of the Astograthian First Division and beyond, hosting multiple Ides of March Cups, a Copa Rushmori semifinal, several matches as one of the key pillars of Baptism of Fire 45 and Cup of Harmony 48... and was in the spotlight as Iturributa United became, somehow, the first team representing Astograth to reach the Champions' Cup final. Since then it has held the third-place match of the 48th Baptism of Fire, held in Iturributa and Ossidiacqua, one edition of the Polarian Vennskap Shield, the 18th Cygnus Cup final and not a whole lot else internationally speaking, besides the usual UICA fare with Sporting and United - a situation which stands to be mended. The 25th edition of the Rushmore Copa de Campeones would be the perfect way of reminding the world what Old City – and indeed all of Iturributa - is and was.

Located in the north, just miles from the Starblaydi border, The Park of
the Phoenix (aka. Phoenix Park) is one of the newest stadia in Legalese,
having been opened to host the 52nd Baptism of Fire Championship Match,
and now serving as the home ground for National League side Tiberian City FC.
The stadium features a retractable roof, which folds into a configuration
resembling flames rising from the arena, as well as a movable natural grass
pitch, permitting games to be played indoors on a top-condition field, yet
still provide the ability for the grass to grow and remain healthy even when
the stadium needs to be used for other purposes.
