The ringtone. Piercing. The vibrating. Startling. With a start, Don Hersch awoke to his cellphone going off on the nightstand.

Taking a moment to compose himself, he answered with a tap on the screen.

"He... hello?" He answered groggily. It was three in the morning, and the day before had been a long one.

"Don, this is Aaron. I'm on my way over. We need to talk."

The line went dead before Don could reply. Slowly he rose from bed, pulled on some pants and a shirt, and looked at the empty spot next to him. It was the first night in three that Aria wasn't there. A man would be coming instead, it seemed.

Aaron Cole was an Imperial Police commander who had been assigned as the liaison to AllSport. Following the Restoration Assault, two more attacks had been attempted, one relatively successful, against the groups events. The first had been at a rally in Teva where a man had attempted to detonate a bomb amidst the crowd. An off-duty police officer, supportive of the cause, had thankfully spotted him moments before and managed to prevent the tragedy. The second was an action that had at first been attributed to hooligans, but later was linked to the Heritage Alliance. At an Union Holiday exhibition match, before which the manager presented Aria (a long time supporter), with the club's honorary 'Crimson Scarf', a group of individuals dressed as opposing fans attempted to attack a Union all-women's supporters group. Many of the latter's members were also leaders in the fan alliance for a local women's football club and for AllSport, and two were even players themselves. Several fans were injured, but security was able to hold the attackers off for the most part. These two instances came alongside several other events, some of which linked to HA directly, others still unclear, such as a riot outside a collegiate women's basketball game and a suspicious hit and run on Barbara Fulton that had thankfully left her unhurt.

Finally having full police cooperation seemed like a godsend for Don. With Aaron helping to both ensure tight security and also provide information, he was optimistic that future events would go smoother. It was not as if every AllSport rally had turned violent, far from it, but the threat always seemed there.

Five minutes after receiving the call, Don heard a knock on his door. The Police operative posted outside had obviously already let Aaron through. Don opened the door, and let the broad, imposing man through.

"Coffee?" was the first thing Don asked. "I probably won't be able to get back to sleep after this."

"No thanks," Aaron replied, "I never sleep anyway."

Don chuckled; if the man was here at this time, it was probably true.

"Let's get down to business, though. There are two reasons I'm here. How should I start; bad news or worse news?"

Don grimaced. "Let's start with the bad."

Nodding, Aaron said, "Alright then. Simply put, I don't think you should hold the rally at Restoration next week. I'm sure you've heard this before, but bear with me. There are simply too many high value individuals being brought to the table. You, Aria, Ms. Fulton, the various collegiate and graduated players, not to mention the crowd itself. Then you have the location, obviously a symbol. Finally the enormous crowd likely to show up. We can conduct all the security we want, but that doesn't change the fact that this is a serious risk. Now, wait, let me give you the worse news to tie into this."

That last part cut off Don before he could speak. Don had indeed heard that before, but had always objected to canceling; no movement was won by hiding at the first sign of danger, and big events like this were important.

"We finally have conclusive evidence that Heritage is a funded terrorist group, not simply some deep intranet network of fundies who just met online. Or at least its central organization is. This hasn't broken to the press yet, and it was stopped at the intranet filter. Basically, a radical feminist group based out of Saintland leaked a massive file containing the entirety of their government's expenditures, public and private. One big line item was several million going towards Heritage Alliance. Whether or not they knew what these guys were doing isn't quite clear; if they did we're in for one hell of an international incident. What is clear, though, is that the money is going somewhere, and that isn't 'the cloud'. Someone is pulling the strings in this, and that means our suspicions of a centralized organization are correct. These guys are funded, they are organized, and they are dangerous. Don, you cannot hold that rally, or at the very least it has to scale down."

Don looked down. That last bit was... troubling to say the least. They had suspected this for so long, but to have it be definitely true somehow made it more real.

"Do we know their real motives yet? I mean besides killing people?"

Aron was silent for a moment, perhaps collecting his thoughts. "We believe that the Alliance draws in conservative men either unsatisfied with the social change since the War, or else believers in 'traditional' gender roles as a whole. They may cater towards those who are radically anti-feminist to begin with. The attacks on you seem to be directing that energy onto one of the most visible cultural elements: sports. Essentially, we believe they are attacking women in sports as a symbolic move against equality in general."

Don nodded. It made complete sense. After all, sport was both one of the great rallying points in the nation, but also one of the biggest ways Gordonopia was visibly projected abroad. Why not target it?

"I'll think about the rally. We'll see."
If you ever have an RPing question, please TG me about it.

Honda Midori

Mignon Beart, huh?

I moodily flipped through a well-thumbed tourist guide on Northern Sunrise Islands, trying to take in as much information as I could before my Imperia Air flight left for Mardi in two hours' time.

Is moving really the right choice, though? Not that I've been left with a great deal of choice in the matter if I wanted to save my beloved Mikan.

To be fair, the contract offer was almost quadruple what I had been earning on a weekly basis at Mikan, and by rights a move to a top UICA club would do far more for my career prospects than an extended spell at a mid-table side sinking into the quagmire of administration. That being said, I was apprehensive - hearing far-fetched tales and fantasies from my friends about the almost mythical country that was NSI had painted a confused picture of the country for me.

Re-reading tourist reviews of the hotels in Mardi that offered the best deals wasn't going to help me much in my footballing career, that was for sure.

I set down the rapidly-cooling cup of cheap coffee on top of a bench and rolled up the guide, carelessly flicking it into a nearby trash can.

There was no point worrying about the propriety of my decision at this point. Not after the ink had dried on my signature on that piece of pristine paper.

It had took all of five minutes for me to realise that I had to accept the move if Mikan were to stand a chance of survival. On the very day of the transfer deadline, I had been whisked to a five-star hotel in Kirayuki, where I was told that representatives from Mignon Beart Charmers, my prospective suitors, were waiting to meet me, and hopefully finalise a deal with immediate effect.

Time was of the essence, as the transfer paperwork still had to be vetted by the footballing authorities before I would be permitted to play for my new club in Northern Sunrise Islands.

The moment I was shown into the company of the representatives, I set about business without making any small talk - "pay packets, bonuses and length" were handled by my agent, who busied himself with haggling over the fine print, while I inquired as to the general football scene and life in general in NSI - the food, the culture and the atmosphere in general.

Oh, I had a fair few scruples. Several times during the short meeting, I tried to come up with reasons to back down from the deal - the length of the contract was not to my satisfaction, the pay was a mere pittance for a player of my calibre - I turned these reasons over and over in my mind, yet I subconsciously realised that I had precisely one choice in the matter - one choice, and that was to accept the more than generous offer coming from Mignon Beart.

I tried to convince myself that it was the right choice, both in terms of my career prospects, personal finances and Mikan's financial future.

It was with a hollow feeling that I scrawled my signature across the single-page document that was laid out before me after an hour or two of bartering between my agent and his contemporary. He had secured me a deal that was more than fair - indeed, I would go so far as to call it overly generous for a player of my standing - and I duly accepted that the contract was a sound one.

Sighing in some frustration, I hefted my luggage over one shoulder and moved in line for the slow crawl towards the counter for Imperia Air, where a long queue was already forming, sipping my coffee as I waited for my turn. After my documents were processed and everything else was in order, I shuffled over to Gate 7, but not before grabbing an energy bar from a nearby convenience shop.

"Passengers boarding Flight A17 to Mardi, Northern Sunrise Islands, please make your way to Gate 7. Takeoff will be in approximately fifteen minutes. This is your last call. I repeat - passengers boarding Flight A17 ..."

As I walked through the gate, I couldn't resist looking back over my shoulder at the land I would be leaving behind for the shores of Northern Sunrise Islands.

With a feeling of regret, tinged with a sense of trepidation, I stepped forth.

Into the vast unknown.

Note - continuation for World XI submission - Honda Midori.

Once again, this does not represent my OOC views in any way. Not to be taken seriously!

What Do We Think?
Rule Theriault - comedian or politician?
by Shirakiin Kurumi

Hmm? I seem to be hearing somebody wailing over in the Free Republics. Must be my imagination, huh?

My faithful readers, you will all be aware that I have penned a rather lengthy article a few days previously, outlining the shortcomings of a certain Mr. Theriault as well as the various failings of the Nova's opponents in Group 17 of the World Cup, which has been labelled by many as a "Group of Death". I then went on to suggest that Mizuyuki and the Federation of Free Republics would be the teams who qualified from the aforementioned group, leaving top seeds such as Pasarga and West Angola in the dust.

However, seemingly unable to resist lashing out at the inherent truth contained within my column, manager of the Free Republics Rule Theriault has lashed out at my article with one of his own, which was recently published in that sham of a publication, Sporting World. As Mr. Theriault has so kindly consented to lay down the gauntlet, I will be more than happy to respond to his outrageous article with one of my own.

Incidentally, for those of you who actually bothered to pay attention to the football, I will also be doing a brief mid-qualifying recap of the Nova's fortunes for the initiated - summing up exactly why we will be successful in our bid for qualifying, along with my predictions for the rest of the Group as well as the projected qualifiers for the rest of the field.

First off, I should make Mr. Theriault aware of the fact that his dear team defeated the Nova not because of their superior talent, nor can our loss be attributed to a simple lack of discipline - indeed, it should be painfully clear to one and all that Theriault's beloved Republicans only snatched the victory away from the jaws of defeat due to their underhanded tactics. Theriault is clearly not one for championing the purists' way of football; that much can be said for him - yet I will refrain from commenting on this matter for now, as I will expose the extent of the FFR's treachery in ensuring that they managed to secure victory over a vastly superior opponent.

I will now address Mr. Theriault's frankly ridiculous opinions in a point-per-point fashion. This will inevitably seem that I am merely defending my person from a succession of character assassination attempts, but bear with me - for I feel that the accusations levelled against me are nothing less than a slight and an affront to the dignity of Mizuyuki as a whole.

In his most recent article, Theriault fires his first broadside by declaring that I am a "wild bomb thrower". To be fair, I do not mince my words no matter the occasion, yet to be accused of being a "wild bomb thrower", as Theriault put it in his article - I can only say that Theriault has reached the pinnacle of hypocrisy, and all that by himself. I congratulate him for achieving such a marvellous feat. Theriault's unacceptable use of the term slant notwithstanding, Theriault has already vented his emotions at almost everybody connected to football - be it current World Cup co-hosts Equestrian States, the nation of Felix, or the country of The Sarian. I will be the first to admit that I am no slouch at dispensing liberal quantities of vitriol when provoked - nonetheless, I take exception at being called a wild bomb thrower by the most infamous bomb thrower of them all. Moving on to the use of the word slant, I will say that we in Mizuyuki take an exceedingly firm stance against what we perceive to be racial slurs - now that Theriault has once again openly expressed his misguided views in so provocative a manner, I think it is safe to say that several members of the Kagetora will be preparing a welcoming committee for him and his entourage, when we will present him with a healthy dose of Mizuyuki-jin hospitality in one of our penitentiaries.

Just for the sake of it, I will clarify for Theriault's sake that the use of racial slurs in our country is not rigidly restricted to the term used - depending on context, a normally innocent word can also be categorised as a racial slur. As such, even though we do not generally consider the word slant to be a racial slur, the courts of Mizuyuki will no doubt take into account the considerable feeling and racism that Theriault has laced his previous statements and articles with, and accordingly find him guilty of hate speech. Yes, you read that right, hate speech, which carries with it a minimum sentence of two years in an open prison, which will see Theriault out for the count for the rest of the World Cup if he dares to set foot here. I am in no doubt that the judges of Mizuyuki will not find the use of terms such as 'damned slant' to help his case, nor will the frankly appalling comparison of our national players to prostitutes aid him when he stands before the courts.

On the subject of the Casaran tournament format, I thank Mr. Theriault for his support - yet his slight against the Equestrian States is simply uncalled for. Thus far, I have seen precisely no signs that a nation of sapient equines have been corrupted or otherwise shown signs of incompetence in their handling of the World Cup, and for Theriault to dismiss them as dishonest simply because of his baseless assertion that only humankind has evolved the necessary trait of honesty is absurd in the extreme. Otherwise, I feel that I have to agree. albeit reluctantly, with Theriault on his trust for Cassadaigua, Equestrian States' co-hosts for this edition of the World Cup; his confidence that Mizuyuki and the FFR will qualify from Group 17, which I hope is not misplaced; and last but not least, the ludicrous process that is the draw for the World Cup. Only sheer ineptness can serve as an explanation for the especially difficult group that the Nova has been drawn in - of that I am fairly confident.

Let us now move on to the defeat suffered by the Nova at the risible home of the Republicans - the Church of Saintland Stadium. As many of you will know, we have had a few unfortunate run-ins with the fanatics of Saintland at some time in the past, and apparently the Republicans saw fit to hold our away match against them in that shambles of a stadium - secure in the knowledge that we would receive a hostile reception that would possibly be to our detriment. As it turned out, the Nova put on a valiant fight, for which I commend them - and I am sure that we would have succeeded in leaving with all three points had it not been for the interference of some persons which I can only describe as moronic. I have been informed by my captain, Tsuchimikado Mikoto, that some of the players reported having lasers shone in their direction by a few robed individuals who went to great lengths to hide their visages from view, which directly led to the concession of at least one goal - the opening Republican goal scored by Kyle Bolton. I will shortly be lodging a report to the authorities regarding this blatant violation, and I have been told that the appeal to have the result overturned will take a minimum of three weeks while the relevant investigations are carried out, although I am left in no doubt that the boorish Theriault is behind this absolute travesty. For legal reasons, I will refrain from disclosing the other underhanded tricks that have seen use against the Nova during the encounter with the Republicans - all shall be revealed if and when the time is ripe.

And as for Theriault's saying that the Republican team is his private property, words fail me - and it is a rare occasion indeed that I do not have a stinging riposte on the tip of my tongue for the likes of him. I can only call upon the hosts of the World Cup to bar the FFR from all further WCC competitions and nullify all their results thus far pending a detailed investigation into the team's financial practices and administration - for I am again reliably informed that such a team violates the WCC constitution and is therefore ineligible to participate in the Baptism of Fire two cycles previously, let alone the further World Cups that they have taken part in since then. This shall be a true litmus test for the competence of Cassadaigua and Equestrian States - if they do ban the FFR from partaking in WCC tournaments, they shall gain my eternal respect.

Theriault also mentioned that under the laws of the FFR, the accused is innocent until proven guilty. I can assure him that the same holds true in our country. Yet, despite that, he has not considered the fact that he might have a moral obligation rather than a legal one to suspend a player accused of a rape of an innocent female until the charges levelled against the player in question has been successfully cleared. Despite what Theriault might say, I am not convinced that a signed statement on his part will be admitted in court; rather, as Theriault stands to profit immensely from having Kyle Bolton, his best player, playing throughout the qualifiers - his sworn statement might well be considered inadmissible evidence in court, given that he has a conflict of interest. Thus, I will not heed his plaintive statements that the Republican team were instead committing copyright infringement - for the time being, I am satisfied that Kyle Bolton remains accused of rape. If the FFR throws the rape case out of court, I can guarantee that the victim in question is more than free to lodge a lawsuit in Mizuyuki, where her case will be duly processed with the utmost impartiality - without favouritism.

Finally, let me puncture with my quill Theriault's bravado - not to mention his showboating and irresponsibility - which he showcased when he said that he had somehow persuaded a Junior Consul of the FFR, one Venicio Piazza, to authorise military action against any nation which attempts to apprehend him or any member of his travelling party. Let us for one moment assume that a irrelevant manager such as Theriault actually has the ear of one of the leaders in the highest echelons of power in the FFR - I still find it highly unlikely that the FFR would be willing to go to war over such a trivial issue as the apprehension of one of its citizens. Nonetheless, if Consul Piazza does find it necessary to wage war over this, I should point out that Mizuyuki's Auroral Armed Forces is is no way inferior to that of the shithole that is the FFR - as such, we will arrest Rule Theriault should he find it necessary to come to Mizuyuki for any reason whatsoever. We will not negotiate, nor will we compromise on this matter - for the law is impartial in Mizuyuki.

Be prepared for a hostile reception at the ShiFT Project Sports Park, my dear Mr. Theriault - for I think that you will find that Mizuyuki are not pushovers unlike The Sarian. We will go to extreme lengths to ensure that things are done the correct way. To paraphrase Theriault - backing down in the face of threats has never been the way Mizuyuki has handled things, and it is not how we will go about handling this entire affair.

Theriault, is it to be a full-scale war in which the FFR is not guaranteed to win, or your arrest in Mizuyuki? Your move.

Pre-print addendum - I'll do the mid-qual reviews later, too busy with my paperwork for the lawsuit right now. Cheers, and may the Nova soar forth.

Shirakiin Kurumi - leader, manager, legend. Or at least that's what fans in the Misaki Stand like to call her. Current manager of the Mizuyuki national football team, she led the Nova to its first ever World Cup qualification at the first time of asking, and is regarded as a legendary manager by many because of her success in doing so. Shirakiin is now leading the team out into battle in Group 17, and is looking to cement her legacy by replicating her achievement of qualification last cycle.

OOC: "6 Days of Gregmas" is the Gregoryisgodistani version of "12 Days of Christmas." The "6 Days of Gregmas Index" is the Gregoryisgodistani version of the "12 Days of Christmas Index" which is itself a parody of the Consumer Price Index, which values the price of all goods in the 12 Days of Christmas from year to year.

6 Days of Gregmas Index

First, let us review the lyrics to "6 Days of Gregmas" for those who forgot.

On the first day of Gregmas, Lord Almighty Gregory gave to me
A slave to chop down my oak tree

On the second day of Gregmas, Lord Almighty Gregory gave to me
Two prune juice rations
And a slave to chop down my oak tree

On the third day of Gregmas, Lord Almighty Gregory gave to me
Three bowls of gruel
Two prune juice rations
And a slave to chop down my oak tree

On the fourth day of Gregmas, Lord Almighty Gregory gave to me
Four toy soldiers
Three bowls of gruel
Two prune juice rations
And a slave to shop down my oak tree

On the fifth day of Gregmas, Lord Almighty Gregory gave to me
Five solid bricks
Four toy soldiers
Three bowls of gruel
Two prune juice rations
And a slave to chop down my oak tree

On the sixth day of Gregmas, Lord Almighty Gregory gave to me
Six pervert chasers
Five solid bricks
Four toy soldiers
Three bowls of gruel
Two prune juice rations
And a slave to chop down my oak tree

Now, how much would each of these cost Lord Almighty Gregory to give to you?

First, let us look at the slave to chop down the oak tree. Field slaves, such as the kind who would chop down the oak tree, can be rented from a slave company for 15,000 greggygodbucks an hour. It would take approximately three hours to chop down an oak tree, according to the lumberjacks union. Therefore, this gift would cost 45,000 greggygodbuck. The cost in 2012 to rent a field slave was 12,000 greggygodbucks an hour, or 36,000 greggygodbucks for three hours.

Price in 2013: 45,000 GGB
Price in 2012: 36,000 GGB
Change +9,000 GGB (+ 25%)

Although prune juice rations are free to the people of Gregoryisgodistan, they are paid for with taxes and tithes. It is estimated that a single prune juice ration costs the government about 1,000 greggygodbucks, so two prune juice rations would cost 2,000 greggygodbucks. In 2012, a prune juice ration cost 950 greggygodbucks, and two cost 1,900 greggygodbucks.

Price in 2013: 2,000 GGB
Price in 2012: 1,900 GGB
Change +100 GGB (+5%)

Now, let us look at the three bowls of gruel. Gruel rations are paid for by the government, but like prune juice rations, they cost money. According to government estimates, a single gruel ration costs 1,200 greggygodbucks, so three gruel rations would cost 3,600 greggygodbucks. However, the song does not specify "gruel rations" but rather "bowls of gruel." One bowl at Gregory's Department Store costs 5,000 greggygodbucks, so three bowls would cost 15,000 greggygodbucks. The total cost is 18,600 greggygodbucks. In 2012, three gruel rations cost 3,300 greggygodbucks, and three bowls cost 13,000 greggygodbucks, for a total cost of 16,300 greggygodbucks.

Price in 2013: 18,600 GGB
Price in 2012: 16,300 GGB
Change: +2,300 GGB (+14.1%)

Now, for the four toy soldiers. A toy soldier at the average toy store costs 1,500 greggygodbucks, the same as last year. Four toy soldiers would cost 6,000 greggygodbucks.

Price in 2013: 6,000 GGB
Price in 2012: 6,000 GGB
Change: None

What about the five solid bricks? One brick from a construction company costs 1,000 greggygodbucks, according to Construction Inc. So, five solid bricks cost 5,000 greggygodbucks. This is the only item to go down from last year, from 5,500 greggygodbucks.

Price in 2013: 5,000 GGB
Price in 2012: 5,500 GGB
Change -500 GGB (-9.1%)

Finally, we come to the six pervert chasers. Let us assume the pervert chasers' services were donated to the narrator for a day. A pervert chaser's annual average salary in 2013 is 20,000,000 greggygodbucks. Divided by 365, that gives us 54,794.52 greggygodbucks a day. So six pervert chasers would cost 328,767.12 greggygodbucks. In 2012, the average pervert chaser made 19,300,000 greggygodbucks a year. Divided by 365, we get 52,876.71 greggygodbucks a day for one pervert chaser, or 317,260.27 for six pervert chasers (due to rounding.) The pervert chasers are by far the most expensive item.

Price in 2013: 328,767.12 GGB
Price in 2012: 317,260.27 GGB
Change: +11,506.85 GGB (+3.6%)

Total cost of all gifts in 2013: 405,367.12 GGB
Total cost of all gifts in 2012: 382,960.27 GGB
Change +22,406.85 GGB (+5.9%)

Now, for the true cost of Gregmas, for all the gifts named in the song as many times as they are. So, the slave on day one, the prune juice and slave on day 2, and so on.

True cost of Gregmas in 2013: 711,167.12 GGB
True cost of Gregmas in 2012: 636,960.27 GGB
Change: +74,206.85 GGB (+11.7%)

Grand Gregmas to all from your friends at Gregoryisgodistan Economics.

OOC: Yes, this is my first RP for the World Cup. Finals got in the way first, then a trip to Morocco. I've finally gotten enough time and enough bandwith to write something up, but unfortunately I couldn't come up with anything super relatable for this tournament. Those of you in the NSG Senate will recognize the names and events, but please note that this is just inspired by Aurentina, not a true account.

Passing Progress, Part 1

Porunalakai sat at his desk in the Progress Coalition headquarters, going over the plans for the new shadow cabinet as per his duties as the Chairman of the coalition. His own party, the NDP, with its heavy plurality of seats in the coalition, would naturally be receiving eight of the fifteen shadow seats available. The Red-Greens, Communists, and Market Socialists would each have a few to themselves, and the Purple Dusk was in the air. Porunalakai himself would take over as Deputy Leader of the Opposition once they had decided who was filling the Leader of the Opposition spot. That reminded him.
“Karin, could you draft a quick memo to the Coalition asking them to send in their preference for the Opposition Leader?” he inquired over the intercom on his desk.
“Of course. And the candidates and length of the vote, sir?”
“It’s Robert Glasgia and Erich Malgrave. Two days for the vote.”
“I’ll have it into you for approval soon.”
“Thanks, Karin.”
It was late at night in suburban Leishaagen, and just a few days before the Fifth Government was set to leave office. The outgoing Prime Minister, Alexander Ainin, had had, by most measures, a successful term with the fifth government. The activity levels among ministers were high, and there was at least the outline of a cohesive policy that wasn’t completely thrown under the bus. The Fourth Government, also under Ainin, had been met with less success and therefore more criticism from the right, but Porunalakai nonetheless thought it had done well. After all, it had been his appointee to the office.
No more appointees were to be made soon, however, as no longer was Wulukuno Porunalakai the President of the Commonwealth of Aurentina. He had seen the election results coming from more than a month away, something he hadn’t disclosed to anyone at the time. They all still had hope even in the waning minutes of the election.
Tom Schmidt of the Libertarian Party had run an active campaign and got out of it what he wanted, the Presidency. His coalition, the National Freedom Coalition, or NFC, had made an electoral alliance with the Iron Party, of whom fascists were the majority. This had naturally drawn shouts from the left, especially those who had not been around for the Progress Coalition’s fiasco four months prior when they enlisted the electoral support of revolutionary communists, the USLP.
“Mr. Porunalakai, the memo is ready.” Karin’s voice came in through the intercom.
“Thanks, let me look it over.” As his eyes glanced over the sheet, Porunalakai remembered that he hadn’t put out a call for ministry preferences yet. That would have to go out in the memo as well.
“It looks good, Karin. I’m just going to add something about ministries and then hopefully we’ll get it off.”
Porunalakai sat for a moment before clicking his pen open to start writing. Two minutes later, he had his memo. Something was missing, though. He paused before writing again: “We cannot afford to have an inactive opposition.”
Titolli de Medici had been appointed Prime Minister of the new NFC government, to be entitled the Sixth Government, and it looked to be like an active term. Past experience had shown Porunalakai that the most effective governments were the ones that didn’t have to deal with an active opposition. Even looking at Ainin’s Fourth and Fifth, the former had had some semblance of an opposing force, while the latter had none.
For some, the concern with Medici was his policies, monarchist in nature. For others, it was the presence of fascists in his cabinet. For even more, it was merely the fact of having a rightist in office that would propel their actions.
Porunalakai looked at his watch as he clicked send on the memo that he had now typed up: 23:54, six minutes before midnight.
He had no doubts at this point that Medici would sail through his confirmation vote as Prime Minister, despite the opposition from some on the left. This, like his thoughts about the Presidential election, he had not disclosed to anyone. The Red-Green Party was going to put up a fight, as were the remaining parts of the Communist Party and also some in the NDP, and Porunalakai thought it was best for a chairman to not discourage the hopes of his members.
The only question remaining at this hour, then, was what to say when it came his turn to speak. The organizer of the vote, Boris DePheffel, had offered Porunalakai an opportunity to give a speech when he voted, and it made little sense to turn down the opportunity. But those thoughts would have to wait; it was well past midnight by now.
Porunalakai woke to find submissions from the Red-Greens and Market Socialists, as well activity in NDP headquarters, that indicated interest in the shadow cabinet. The Communist Party and the Purple Dusk Party were mostly silent. Glasgia had also built up a strong lead in the race for Leader of the Opposition, something not surprising to most. As he walked into the Senate building, a shouting match was going on over
Meanwhile, in the common areas and debate chamber of the senate, the arguing over the “fascist cabinet” raged on. In particular, there were several ardent defenders of the NFC’s choice to make the alliance, and several prominent attackers saying they had sacrificed principle for votes. Porunalakai naturally stayed out of everything. It was too risky to enter such a charged debate when he needed calm responses to whatever he was going to do next. That reminded him of the speech before the vote. Porunalakai buried his face in his hands. The senate office blurred around him.
The ringing phone stirred Porunalakai from his slumber.
“Hello?”
“Hi, Wulukuno, it’s Cengiz Harun.”
“How are you, my good man? How is your party?”
“Well, not too well. I’m resigning and about to make a speech in the chamber.”
“I’m sad to hear it. Cengiz, you have been an invaluable contributor to this senate and an excellent senator. Your work with the elections and the Progress Coalition, as well as your party work, has been admirable and will not be forgotten.”
“Thank you. I enjoyed working with you. Keep me updated, will you?”
“You’ll see my tweets and I have your number, so indeed I will.”
“Thanks, Wulukuno.”
“No problem. Good bye.”
This was an unexpected resignation to say the least. Cengiz had been one of the first senators to take office after Aurentina gained its independence from the UK, and had served longer than many others. He had also developed a reputation for being a skilled environmental legislator, and so the position of Shadow Minister of the Environment had been reserved for his party, the Purple Dusk Party, specifically designed for him to take it. Porunalakai sent a memo over to the PDP headquarters to ask the new chairman if he was still interested in the position. The response was negative.
Sunday came in a hustle and with deadlines to meet. The final selection of the shadow cabinet ministries was going on at night, and Porunalakai still hadn’t heard from the Communists. No sooner had he sat down than the intercom crackled.
“Sir, you have a memo.”
“Thanks Karin, send it in.”
It was a report from the Constabularies about the final death toll of the riots on Saturday. Some “patriots” had started a march in Leishaagen, and quickly it had risen to be full on riots with several sides contributing. Over 80 dead and 500 arrested was not a good way to leave office for the Fifth Government.
Night came, and the anti-fascist voices on from the Red-Green Party were only growing louder in their calls against the Medici appointment. He had come several times to Progress Coalition headquarters to try and appease certain senators, but those efforts had been futile.
As Porunalakai drafted up the final shadow cabinet division that night, he started thinking about his speech in greater depth. Medici was undoubtedly a reasonable man, but by no means was there enough policy overlap to justify a vote based on that account. As a social democrat, Porunalakai just couldn’t stomach a potentially more privatized system.
As the clock ticked midnight, Porunalakai opened up his intercom.
“Karin, have the communists sent in their picks yet?”
“No sir.”
“Alright, thank you.”
He sent out the Coalition memo almost at one in the morning, but he wasn’t done yet. As an Executive Council member of the NDP as well, he had to initiate the party vote for ministries. He wouldn’t make it. Porunalakai passed out from exhaustion on his desk.

So with qualifying at the half way point of the campaign, the Tasrailia Tigers are currently in fourth place in Group 14 with the team only seven points behind the top team Eura. So what about we look back over the first half to get to this position.

MD1: The Fair Republic 5-2

The opening game of the qualifiers got off with a bang, with a seven run goal fest to open away from home. This someway was a brilliant way to open the season, even if it was a low ranked team like The Fair Republic.
MD 2: Dutzenderland 1-0

Our opening game at home and once he would take home a victory which would take us to two wins from two after the first two match days. But we know this, it was going to be a lot tougher with the next game being against Sangti.
MD 3: Sangti 1-1

This was our first game against a higher ranked team, and also up against one of our regional teams in Esportiva. In someway, I think we were relieved to get a draw out of this game but the big news being that we would be on the top of the tree after three.
MD 4: Kinzar 0-2

This wasn't a good result for us as we should of got a draw out of this game maybe even a win. The problem being with that win, Kinzar with that win took home top spot in the group after four match-days but they will know in the future we will want our revenge.
MD 5: New Sideburn 2-2

Another high ranked team to push down a draw in this match which was in some way a relieve to the heart of Tasrailia. New Sideburn would of preferred to take a win against us but we stopped them in their tracks to only give them a draw.
MD 6: Eura 1-3

This game in some way, wasn't a surprise to us as we knew that we were going to lose this match but at least Eura didn't do much damage to us unlike some teams. In some way we were relieved to not do much damage from us with a 10-0 smashing.
MD 7: New Rhodes 2-1

Really we should of won more then what we had but as some people stay, a win is a win and a valuable one at that, as we would head to the bye in positive spirits. Except for the fact that it was snowing and we couldn't see the white ball so we had to go with blue.
MD 9: Eastfield Lodge 1-0

This was a  to the system where the final whistle came from the referees and we took home the victory at our biggest stadium in Tasrailia. We couldn't believe what had happened and that lost for Eastfield Lodge has put a sting in their campaign. Not for us though as we could beat our win record.

Why We Aren't Doing As Well As We Can

Ok, the first half's over. We've won all games except for two: a game we had to win and a game we could win. However, I think we can give the first half a much more thorough analysis than just that. Individually, there have been varied cases. The team is not in a bad position; far from that, they're currently in a spot of direct qualification, even if just by the skin of their teeth. However, I'm pretty sure many people expected something different. Not that I exactly agree with those people - they clearly fail to look, like, eight years back or similar. Anyway, the eight matches we've played have all left something to learn from. Or not, whatever.

Albaie 1-3 Farfadillis
A pretty solid Farf team got three points away from home without much difficulty. Despite not thrashing, and admittedly not playing its best football, La Vherderoja did more than enough to take three rather valuable points home. Fôx was the only player I can say played a truly good game, however. As solid as we may have been, no player was really playing at its best, excluing Fôx, as I said. Also, Terán scored a fantastic goal. Like, fantastic. And Fôx, too. Looking at it now, we might've been a bit lucky. Alaminos saved a goal in the line too. We might've been than just a bit lucky. Solid anyway, I guess. A great debút with the Farf shirt for Mâás Fôx
Best Player: Mâás Fôx

Farfadillis 5–2 Heroes of Larkwood
A very solid match. Against a very bad team, granted, but we got to thrash them. No played played at his best, but they played well enough. There was no need for an overkill anyway. Though a better goal difference can always end up being useful... Anyway, Terán surprised Heroes of Larkwood with a goal in the first minute. Dandalleion scored an unexpected goal half an hour later, and then Kâí sort of rampaged and scored two, as well as sort of causing the last goal (scored by Tenian). Overall, nothing to worry about.
Best Player: Risko Kâí

Lymantatia 1-2 Farfadillis

A very worrying match here. Personally, I think this match started some kind of cataclysm. After a rather solid campaign beginning, Farfadillis played a frankly mediocre team against a team that shouldn't have given us all that much trouble. Personally, I think Lymantatia deserved more. Bressler had many chances in his favour, but he was always stopped cold by either Lisdiren in a good day, Alaminos in a last resort sliding tackle or his lack of experience. Nonetheless, he did score once. However, Dandalleion did much better by scoring two out of three chances he got. He had to build them himself. He carried the weight of the entire team. Thank him for not being out of the run for direct qualification, Farves. Oh, and pray for more players like him to come. I personally hope Fuego can live up to what I've written about him. Alaminos and Lisdiren played well, though.
Best Player: Friekder Dandalleion

Farfadillis 3–6 Blouman Empire

Sad. Though being thrashed was not what we deserved, we did deserve to lose at home against our biggest opponent this qualifiers. We were losing when half time came, but we managed to score two to compensate. Then disaster struck when Dandalleion had a legitimate goal disallowed. Now, I hate it when people claim we would've thrashed Blouman Empire had that goal been (correctly) given to us. No, people, the armageddon that came in the last part of the match would've happened regardless. This match showed everyone what we truly lacked, at least in comparison to Blouman Empire: stamina. Seriously, we were winning until stamina kicked in. With a bit of bad luck and a Blouman Empire capable of tearing apart our 'defense', we just couldn't hold onto our lead any longer. Alaminos scored an own goal, and played a terrible match. Luckily, he did not play terribly anymore. Which is a relief, obviously.
Best Player: Friekder Dandalleion

Kalumba 0–0 Farfadillis

A very boring match that showed how Farfadillis depends on its attack in every game. Luckily, we managed to keep a clean sheet for the first time this qualifiers just when we could not score. Kalumba did not dominate us or anything, but the attack looked overall impotent. However, something good came out of this match: Faró was replaced by Fakkotti. Mata played a very good game as a defender, and was the only one I'd say played decently, along with Fakkotti, Lisdiren and Dandallion. Two important points gone. Luckily, Blouman Empire also tied with Kalumba.
Best Player: Cleto Mata

Farfadillis 5–2 Sameba

Ok, the attack was back. Sameba were the unlucky victims this time around. Dandalleion played a fantastic game, while Fôx made the most out of that fantastic performance by getting assisted by him twice. Dandalleion did score one himself, while Tuzzio finally scored once again. Mata scored a wondergoal. Overall, probably our most solid game. We've so far won three out of three games we've played against Sameba.
Best Player: Friekder Dandalleion

Nova Anglicana 0–1 Farfadillis

A tough and very important match. At Nova Anglicana we were unlikely to score much, and indeed we didn't. This match in particular worried me a lot, as I was not sure we were capable of getting the three points we had to get. In the end, thanks to some good tactics applied by Rossizzo, we managed to score a goal and win thanks to it. We didn't really deserve to win. Let's say we should've won half a goal against nil. Fôx was the best player just because he scored the winning goal. Otherwise, I'd not know who to choose.
Best Player: Mâás Fôx

Farfadillis 3–1 Crya

A good result. Three points we had to win at home. No real problems arose. We started losing but Dandalleion equalized just two minutes later with a perfectly-executed scissor kick anyway. Soon after, Kâí scored a long-range effort (not that common coming from him). Kâi himself would score again in the second half to seal the win. Crya never realistically stood a chance if you ask me, even counting when they were holding the lead.
Best Player: Risko Kâí

Overall, not the most successful qualifying campaign. We're not so likely to qualify directly (unlike World Cup 66) but I trust our players. If qualifiers ended today, we'd be in the World Cup. What's truly relieving is that we've got at least a play-off spot assured (not mathematically, but an eight-point difference is a lot). Let's just hope we can get in once again. Who knows what we can do in the World Cup. It's just a matter of playing well seven games in a row to be the champion. Well, playing fantastically awesomely super hyper mega well. But hey, we tied with Eura last time around, and they went on to win the whole thing. Who says we can't dream?

Tim Wilson was going stir crazy. He had awoken from the emergency surgery following his heart attack disoriented. When his memory slowly returned to the moment he was stricken, he was overcome by an overwhelming sense of frustration. His ego was such that it never occurred to him that the team could function in his absence. The lack of a vidscreen in his room just fueled his frustration. Why not let him watch updates from MSPN unless it was bad news and they were afraid it would kill him? His protestations to the doctors fell on deaf ears: they insisted that what he needed complete rest while his body tried to heal itself. If he was hoping to get information when Linda McDillon came to see him, he was disappointed. She would tell him nothing other than the team was doing well, and the second leg of qualifiers looked good. Chuck Walters was likely to be cleared for play after the holiday break, and besides Tim had only missed one game. They weren't in danger of elimination even if they had lost, which they hadn't (and yes, she deliberately didn't mention that it had been a draw, as she knew that was no different than a loss to the perfection-obsessed Wilson).

Tim found that answer incredibly unsatisfactory. Who knows what was actually going on? For all he knew, the woman was lying to him out of some sense of guilt or embarrassment. He had never been happy with MSL's decision to give him an assistant manager, and even less so that his assistant came from MPSL. He felt the Ladies' style of play was too different from what he was trying to accomplish. It wasn't really, as the two leagues operated under the same rules system, but Tim was never one to let logic or even fact get in the way of his worldview. If it were possible to will himself well, he'd have done so. As it was, all he could do was stew in his own juices. He felt like getting up, tearing out every line and monitor they had hooked up to him, and heading straight to the pitch, before the team's bid ended in disaster. Unfortunately, his body wouldn't co-operate. He could hardly lift his head, much less anything else. He considered trying to befriend an orderly or charm a nurse to see if he could convince anyone to slip him a little information...

Eagles Fly High at Mid-Qualifying

STEINBRUCK HEIGHTS, MILWAUKEESBURG- Ten matches in, the States are doing much better than expected. Der Adlerschaft was expected to come in fourth(at best), but is in the third position, right on the heels of Starblaydia and the New Montreal States.

Let's take a look at the table.

Group 15 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Starblaydia 8 5 2 1 17 6 +11 17
2 New Montreal States 8 5 1 2 14 9 +5 16
3 German American States 8 4 3 1 18 14 +4 15
4 Maklohi Vai 8 4 2 2 9 5 +4 14
5 Neu Engollon 8 3 4 1 17 12 +5 13
6 Maineiacs 8 4 1 3 8 8 0 13
7 Savski Venac 8 1 2 5 10 18 −8 5
8 Ceni 8 1 1 6 11 18 −7 4
9 Great Britiannia 8 0 2 6 5 19 −14 2

The States sit at 4-1-3, with a +4 goal differential. They have kept afloat for most of the early stages, only taking a hit against #5 ranked New Montreal States. They managed a draw against leaders Starblaydia, and a win against Maklohi Vai. At their current position, the Eagles could leapfrog Starblaydia and New Montreal States giving the right conditions. That said, Neu Engollon, the Vaians, and Maineiacs are picking up momentum as well. The Eagles could be down as far as 6th position at any time.

What We Are Doing Well

Among other things, the Eagles are doing very well at contending with the highest talent. They were able to beat Maklohi Vai, tie with top-30 Starblaydia, and just lose to 5th ranked New Montreal States. As said by many international pundits, the ability for Der Adlerschaft to maintain international respect is to keep challenging teams like this. The Eagles must bring strong play against these sides down the home stretch.

What We Are Not Doing Well

The States are giving up too many goals to teams that they could easily beat. While this seems like a minor problem, it counts for the tiebreakers that are especially in this competitive group. An example is the one-all draw against Great Brittania, as well as giving up an unnecessary goal against Ceni.

They also need to work on their defense. They have let up too many goals, albeit against tough teams. This was shown in the 4-all draw of Neu Engollon and the 4-3 loss against the New Montreal States.

It is hard to criticize the negatives of a team, and the Eagles are doing very well. They are showing again that they work very well under adversity.

NAMIBE CHRONICLE

GROUP 17, MID-QUALIFYING REVIEW/PREVIEW

NAMIBE- "We Can Still Win This." During the Christmas Break in Qualifying, posters, billboards, and banners appeared all over Namibe, especially the football stadium, with that slogan emblazoned across them. West Angola is certainly skating on thin ice, as has been the theme of nearly every news article written by this publication regarding the football team for the past several weeks, but can very quickly regain their momentum in the first few matches of the second leg. West Angola faced (and still faces) one of the most brutal schedules in its history, with its first four matches coming against the first, fifth, third, and fourth seeds, respectively, which could mean that this group will be decided (at least as far as West Angola is concerned) by the fifth matchday of the return leg. After opening the leg at home against Pasarga in what will hopefully be a momentum-shifting win for the gold-and-indigo, the team travels to Felix and then Mizuyuki before going on bye. Following their time off, West Angola concludes their gauntlet with a match against their lone top-tier win of the opening leg, Free Republics.

Should West Angola manage to win all of those matches, which is far-fetched but certainly not impossible, they will have injected themselves back into the qualifying hunt. From that point, West Angola would still need to win the remainder of its matches over Vettrera, KungYo, Preiva, and The Sarian to remain in the running, none of which is a certainty given the team's penchant for dropping matches against teams near the bottom of the group, and especially in this cycle, when they lost 3-4 against KungYo in the biggest upset in West Angolan footballing history. Essentially, West Angola needs to run the table in the return leg to have even a hope of qualifying, and the odds are definitely stacked against them. I'd feel a lot more confident of the team's chances if they had a reputation for beating the odds, instead of choking late and letting qualifying slip away time and time again. While qualifying after as badly a start as we've had would be nice, it really just doesn't seem like something we can count on anymore.

Team-By-Team Preview

Group 17 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Felix 8 6 0 2 20 13 +7 18
2 Mizuyuki 8 5 2 1 21 13 +8 17
3 Free Republics 8 5 1 2 16 11 +5 16
4 Pasarga 8 4 2 2 15 8 +7 14
5 West Angola 8 4 0 4 18 18 0 12
6 The Sarian 8 2 4 2 19 16 +3 10
7 Vettrera 8 3 1 4 14 17 −3 10
8 KungYo 8 2 0 6 14 23 −9 6
9 Preiva 8 0 0 8 10 28 −18 0

1. Felix (95)- Almost as big a surprise as The Sarian, Felix has had as close to a flawless campaign as a team just inside the top one hundred can hope for, with six wins and only two losses in the first leg. With a lead over Mizuyuki preserved by one point courtesy of a draw between that team and Pasarga on the team's final matchday, Felix looks to maintain momentum in the second leg as they open against Mizuyuki and West Angola, two teams looking to improve their standing within the group by knocking off the leader. If Felix can win their first two matches, they will establish a little more room for themselves at the top and knock West Angola out of contention for the top two spots in the group. If Felix can win the group outright, they will dramatically improve their image in the multiverse, and go into the World Cup riding a wave of momentum that could carry them farther than they ever thought possible.
Predicted Group Position- 3rd

2. Mizuyuki (51)- Are you sorry yet? The Sporting Ministry had a big hand in West Angola's close loss to Mizuyuki, with the infamous "River Flag Country" Memo fueling the fires of West Angola's opposition, helping them to power past our team in a match we desperately needed to win. Oh, don't get me wrong, Mizuyuki is an excellent football team and that skill was the main reason for their victory, but there is no doubt in my mind that our team would have had a much better chance at winning that match had Mizuyuki not been able to use the Memo as inspiration. At any rate, Mizuyuki has clearly proved that none of their wins were flukes by solidifying their spot in second place with a 1-1 draw against Pasarga. Mizuyuki has confidently predicted that they will emerge from the group, and nothing they've displayed thus far belies that prediction. Several teams within the group are hungry to unseat them, however, including most notably top seeds Pasarga and West Angola, who have had disappointing campaigns up to this point, so Mizuyuki will likely face far stronger opposition this time around.
Predicted Group Position- 2nd

3. Free Republics (69)- This team was the first to rise to fill the void after West Angola and Pasarga stumbled out of the gate, and even sat atop the group for a brief time. The gravy train ground to a halt, however, with a jarring 1-0 loss to West Angola, that team's first win of qualifying, and Free Republics dipped to fourth before climbing into third with a series of key wins in the second half of the leg. As a nation, however, Free Republics is currently embroiled in a bitter feud with Felix over an alleged rape, and it threatens to erupt into an outright conflict, which could become a pretty major distraction for the team. War, as has been observed already in West Angola, could be tied to a poor performance. If Free Republics' performance is even partially dependent on the situation with Felix, they could be in big trouble if the conflict escalates.
Project Group Position- 5th

4. Pasarga (15)- Along with West Angola, Pasarga has had a woefully underperforming first leg. Despite a strong 4-2 win over the second seed on the first matchday (which looked substantially less impressive as West Angola began to drop match after match), Pasarga looked listless and uninspired through many matches, and even fumbled away a chance to climb into second by drawing Mizuyuki 1-1 in the final match of the opening leg. Currently at 4-2-2, Pasarga needs a near-flawless second leg to get back in the race, and will need to kick that off in a big way in Namibe when they face West Angola in the opening match. Their opponents, however, will be just as eager to win the match and steal fourth place away from the top seeds. Likely only one of the two top seeds will emerge from the group, if either manage it at all, and which one it will be will probably be decided by the winner of their clash in a few days. If Pasarga wins, they could rise all the way to second place and be able to vault up from there, but if they lose, they could fall to fifth, leaving them even more ground to make up.
Projected Group Position- 1st (Going out on a limb here, but I just don't think we can beat them)

5. West Angola (29)- Tenacity, experience, and uplifting billboards aside, the math is just too daunting. While making up a three-win gap in the return leg is not impossible, and certainly not unheard of, this team just doesn't have a penchant for doing that. West Angola is famous for losing matches they should win, not winning matches they shouldn't, and given how this team has already performed against the top tier of the group I don't think we should look for any fireworks. West Angola might beat Pasarga, and beating Mizuyuki isn't out of the question, but winning all four matches against Felix, Free Republics, and the aforementioned in addition to running the table against the bottom part of the group is really not what this team is built for. When you have over half your team in their upper 30's, you're not looking to come back over the long haul, you're looking to play off your experience and win games early, then coast home and rest your aching joints. Luke Parrish can do all he can to fire up the team (and that's a lot), but there's only so much this group can do. Hopefully we can land a Cup of Harmony bid, and give our stars a send off there under better circumstances.
Project Group Position- 4th

6. The Sarian (178)- Who saw these guys coming? There were rumblings immediately prior to the start of qualifying from those who had observed the team that this group was playing far above their rank, but the wake-up call came quickly as they drew Free Republics 1-1, and played like a top-40 team against KungYo and Preiva, winning those matches by a combined 9-4 and drawing Vettrera 2-2. Those who dismissed The Sarian's run as a fluke were quieted after the team clashed with Pasarga, and shut down the top seed's attack to come away with a 0-0 draw. Despite a 4-3 setback against Felix, The Sarian continued to surprise when they added a fourth draw, this time 1-1 against Mizuyuki, to their resume, and looked to close out the opening leg with a final conquest of West Angola. Unfortunately (for them at least), despite a hard fight, the second seed escaped with a 2-1 win to drop The Sarian to sixth before the break. In order to recover their momentum, The Sarian must repeat and perhaps even improve upon their first match from the opening leg, and potentially score an outright win over Free Republics, which could vault them into fifth if Pasarga beats West Angola, and leave them just one point back if Pasarga falls.
Projected Group Position- 6th

7. Vettrera (140)- The PUSH Initiative is on life support. Despite a confident beginning to the campaign, Vettrera has been unable to capture the spark that they displayed in the past, and finds themselves one spot below their group seeding. Vettrera needs to commit to their football team immediately if they want to recover, as a big part of their lack of success has been attributed to a perceived lack of support of the team from both the Vettreran government and its citizenry. If Vettrera gets behind its football teamm and stays behind them, I could see them going far in the future, although probably not quite so far in this cycle. If they don't, however, they will likely drop even farther in the group and soon vanish from the World Cup. I don't mean to sound dire, but Vettrera is balanced on the edge, if they win here, they could be in line for great things, but if they don't, they will probably just continue to fade.
Project Group Position- 7th

8. KungYo (358) and 9. Preiva (Unranked)- A lot of West Angolans would like to go to war with KungYo right now. The lowly eighth seed, having shown no signs of life throughout the opening leg, dealt us an almost catastrophic 4-3 upset midway through qualifying. Had West Angola won that match, we would be in fourth right now, only one point out of third and two out of second. The only good thing coming out of the loss of KungYo is that it probably galvanized the team to beat The Sarian and close out qualifying, and hopefully we can carry that momentum into the return leg. KungYo is in the same boat as Vettrera, but they have even less success to build off of should they get behind their team. The only team looking more lackluster in this cycle than KungYo is Preiva, who has not even scored a point in this cycle and lost to KungYo 4-2. Neither Preiva nor KungYo have really contested anything (besides the match against West Angola) so far, and their fan support has been negligible, so it remains to be seen if this is their only attempt at winning the World Cup.
Project Group Positions- KungYo 8th, Preiva 9th

After realizing that Christmas is coming soon, I got the idea of making a long "12 Days of Christmas" parody related to the soccer competitions in NS Sports (especially NS World Cup) which I will do with Lymantatia and Dutzenderland. "Telesat and Stuff" and my Pretty Cure fanfic will resume after the Christmas break.
I'm not gonna this one for today.

At Halfway Point, Lions Exactly Where Expected

Hayden Landers, Nova Anglicana

When I wrote my first article at the beginning of WC qualifying, part of that article included a predicted order of finish for Group 10. Let's review, shall we?

1. Farfadillis (this ultra-attacking squad will score enough goals to beat anyone)
2. Blouman Empire (not much is known about them, but with a world #20 ranking, they're almost a sure thing)
3. Kalumba (I like their style much more than Lymantatia)
4. Lymantatia (team seems less excited about WC, rank will not avail them)
5. Albaie (this team had a good showing in Copa de la Paz I, eventually eliminated by Young Lions (U20 side))
6. Sameba (another ultra-attacking team, they might get shut down by better tactical sides)
7. Nova Anglicana (I think they'll be close behind Sameba, but ultimately unable to advance past this spot)
8. Crya (Socialist nation will give it a try, but their BoF resulted in two losses and a tie with equally unskilled Holy Forden Church)
9. Heroes of Larkwood (these heroes won't be making headlines, as they declined to participate in the BoF and appear to be fielding a team of unknown amateurs)

At the halfway point, the table looks like this:
Group 10 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Blouman Empire 8 7 1 0 27 9 +18 22
2 Farfadillis 8 6 1 1 22 13 +9 19
3 Albaie 8 3 2 3 20 18 +2 11
4 Kalumba 8 2 5 1 11 10 +1 11
5 Lymantatia 8 3 2 3 11 11 0 11
6 Sameba 8 2 4 2 17 19 −2 10
7 Nova Anglicana 8 2 2 4 4 9 −5 8
8 Heroes of Larkwood 8 1 1 6 9 22 −13 4
9 Crya 8 0 2 6 8 18 −10 2

As one can plainly see, Blouman Empire and Farfadillis are absolutely running away and hiding from the rest of the group, with a gaggle of teams tied at 11 points apiece and Sameba hanging around at 10. The good news is that the Lions are only three points out of third; the bad news is that only two teams qualify and they're eleven points out of second. Following a similar format, the good news is that the Lions have allowed the fewest goals in the group, tied with Blouman Empire; the bad news is that they have scored only a measly four goals, two of which they scored in their opening victory over Crya. The uber-defensive play of the Lions has kept things close, especially against Farfadillis, but has cost them in other areas. They managed a scoreless draw away at Sameba for their eighth point in eight games, which is not bad for a first attempt, but certainly something on which one would like to see improvement. Their other games were 2-0 and 1-0 victories over Crya and Heroes of Larkwood, followed by a scoreless draw with Albaie, giving them seven points in three games. Unfortunately, they then had to run the gauntlet of top-100 teams and were defeated, soundly 3-0 and 2-0 by Lymantatia and Kalumba, while putting up good fights in 3-1 and 1-0 defeats to Blouman Empire and Farfadillis.

As for the rest of the teams in the group, top-seeded Blouman Empire are undefeated, absorbing only a scoreless draw against Kalumba, while handily defeating Farfadillis 6-3. For Farfadillis, the #2 seed, that was their only defeat and they also drew with Kalumba. They remain easily ahead of the group and are all but assured of qualifying. At 11 points are matched Albaie, Kalumba, who have managed 5 draws and only departed the pitch without points in one match, and Lymantatia. At 10 points are Sameba, who whipped Kalumba 5-2, but were thrashed by Blouman Empire 5-0. The Lions follow, and Heroes of Larkwood and Crya, with four and two points, round out the group. The Heroes soundly defeated Crya 4-2 and drew Kalumba 1-1, but these amateurs have proved largely overmatched. Crya have managed a draw against (who else) Kalumba, and also against Sameba, but have by and large been the group's whipping boy.

In the second half, another eight points for the Lions would have to be taken as a success, and as taking care of their business. Points against Blouman Empire and Farfadillis are unlikely, especially on the road, but perhaps their hard-fought efforts in the first go-round will translate into success on the second time through. I know that they'd especially like to get back at Lymantatia and Kalumba, who shut them out and largely outplayed them in their victories. The Lions are playing for pride now, and a string of luck, combined with the dominance of the top two teams and the infighting among the others could propel them as high as third (in our wildest dreams), but what they really need to focus on is getting points out of as many matches as possible and finding a way to score goals on the world stage, so they don't set some sort of record of something.

Its Not Just A Football Term Folks

Luis Garcia hasn't heard the news of Lucia yet, so he turned on the television to the channel where they would be re-airing the (in)famous Lucia speech where she would say her apology to the Felixian affected by the rape case, the rape victim herself. Much to Luis's surprise Lucia didn't apologize, no, she instead added fuel to the fire between the two nations. In fact in the climax of her speech she fired up the woodheads (Felixian term for idiots) in that packed arena with this lovely tidbit that just infuriated all the Felixians,

" I want to state clearly and unequivocally to everybody watching this, whether in the Greatest Nation in the Multiverse, or in some foreign shithole, that I am a professional wrestler and that I am a Patriotic Republican. I not only do not apologize for exercising my freedom of speech, but I promise to continue to do so. As I said at Wrestlecade, Kyle Bolton can rape me any time he wants to. I stand by that statement and I condemn those hypocritical politicians who run as champions of freedom and then try to violate my Constitutional rights once they're safely elected Consul."

Luis Garcia was about to throw the remote when his little daughter came in, the president quickly changed channels of course, and got up to hug his daughter, Patricia. In a adorable 5 year old voice, the young girl asked her daddy why he was so sad looking. Luis responded with a sigh and said, "The world is a stressful place honey... I have been going through a lot of..." Shit. He was going to say shit. Cause that is what it was, shit. But he didn't say that, he instead said, "Stuff... Lots of big person stuff. Now, it's late, go to do bed Patricia." Patricia nodded and she hugged her dad, she then ran towards her mom, the president's wife, and the wife, gave a sad look to Luis. Luis looked down and then back to her with a smile, "It will get better." He mouthed. Then Janet, his wife's name, left with their daughter.

Luis sat back down and slumped on his couch chair. He sighed and turned to the local news, Channel 7 News, to be exact and watched something that would sour his already bad day, a speech by the Nationalist Party candidate for President, Romeo Bellincioni. His fiery speech fired up the Felixians there and it wasn't even close to finishing as it seemed he was prepared to give the high note, if you will, of his speech. Where he would make the whole crowd crazy for him and his overzealous and Nationalistic ideals.

"Those Free Republican pigs make fun of us!" Cue booing from crowd. "They call us trolls!" More booing from the crowd. "They support rape! They support sexual assault of our women! Even the women themselves support those sick things!" Continued booing from crowd. "Well enough, is enough!" Mr. Bellincioni booms, "If elected as President of the Federal Republic I will form an army for the country! I will do a draft! And I will declare war on the Free Republics and I will liberate Noburu Taiyou from those pigs! And when the time is right! I will lead the invasion force on the Free Republics! And I will destroy every city! Brick! By! Brick!" The crowd goes wild with a loud uproar of cheering and they chant, "Ro Me Oh. Ro Me Oh. Ro Me Oh."

The President turned off the television in disgust. How could Felixians like that proto-Fascist? He was certainly puzzled but he remembered in those history books he read as a child. In a moment of national crisis, they, the people, look to the most fiery of people to lead them. It also didn't help that, thanks to Romeo Bellincioni, the Nationalist Party set up a armed group, the Nationalist Felixian Front (NFF) to intimidate possible voters. The National Police Force (NPF), managed to stop most of this but in the rural areas, the NFF started to force certain people to get in line with their beliefs. He hated it but he couldn't do anything about it. The NPF was already stretched as it was and couldn't cover everything. Much to the president's dismay.

Luis Garcia gave a long and tired sigh and got up. He had to write something of a response to the Consul. Probably was going to say, "Hey! Saw your attempt to put out the fire! Too bad that 'safety blanket' was drenched in oil!" He then walked over to the computer where he would type out the response to the disaster that unfolded in front of his eyes. The good news, or at least news that wasn't shitty, is that the folks from Mizuyuki. The message basically said this, "Sure, we will not stab and slash those fucking pigs." For which Luis Garcia was glad for. He was going to have to send a message to them too for sure.

Oh and who could forget the trigger happy nation of The Sarian. Despite their good intentions for helping Felix and themselves it was making life for him a diplomatic nightmare. Coupled with the fact the nation threatened with the cutoff of supplies he thought of the next best thing. Helping out the Free Republicans despite the lack of recognition (and most importantly, political points) for his "kind" actions. Still, in his next diplomatic letter he will certainly warn the country about The Sarian's intentions. Something the Consul could get some political points for and hopefully still be the leader of the nation.

TO: Venicio Piazza, Consul of the Federation of Free Republics
FROM: Luis Garcia, President of the Federal Republic of Felix
RE: DNA Evidence Deal
ENCRYPTION: VERY HIGH

Well I saw that lovely "apology speech" Lucia threw out. Great speech by the way, who knew a woodhead's words could sink the Presidential hopes for the President of Felix? But I digress, I have to recognize your efforts to make her apologize. Didn't work, but, hey, at least you tried. Anyways, I guess I too have bad news to report. The Sarian wants to invade your Japanese speaking colony in Esportiva. Yes, the land of the rising sun is going to be invaded by a war hungry nation out for blood. I suggest you beef up your forces if you want to protect your claim, or as Mr. Theriault puts it, those "slants". I hope my actions help you out in future political endeavours. Oh, and before I finish this message off, I would like to tell you that there is a way to "change" the mind Rule Theriault. It is a radical option for sure, but it can be done, my government has been researching on something called Inception, where you basically, put an idea into someone's head. We already have proven that entering someone subconscious was possible and that we could steal info, but the Inception part is a wee bit difficult to be proven possible although early tests have revealed promising results. If you are interested in this idea send a message back. If not, disregard the message and do everything possible to delete it from memory. This is highly classified information I am giving you.

"Next message." Said the President.

TO: Nikaido Mikoto, Premier of the Auroral Technocratic Union of Mizuyuki
FROM: Luis Garcia, President of The Federal President of Felix
RE: Safe Passage

Look, I understand those two pigs said and did some terrible stuff but you gotta give me some leeway here. I am trying to solve a rape case here. Now the public here and the world, for that mater, believe Mr. Bolton caused the rape. Now as you may very well know, we need hard evidence in order to prove that, we can't prove that because we don't have the evidence. I have a chance to get his valuable information from the Free Republican officials only if you don't arrest the two. Please, for the sake of the girl affected by this, change your mind. As mentioned earlier, I understand these two are the most arrestable people (other than that scam Lord Gregory in Gregoryistan) in the multiverse but seriously, for justice's sake, please don't warrant their arrest when they are in Mizuyuki soil. That is all I am asking for Ms. Mikoto. A break. For once. So I can do my job right.

"I am going to need some serious therapy when I am done with this..." said Luis Garcia as he slumped on the chair and soon fell asleep on the Presidential Office Desk.

World Cup 66 Qualifiers: Another Close Match.
By: Steven Smith

Felix wins their 4th match in a row with a tight victory against the fellow second placer team and Esportivan, The Sarian. While the 4-3 victory does ring some alarm bells with team faithful many experts and reporters, yours truly included, have to given The Sarian team some serious props after the newbies have pulled off a so far fabulous campaign in the World Cup qualifiers despite their rank. Felix now is in now 2nd in the standings tied with Mizuyuki with points but is behind in goal differential and/or head to head results. Now here is the recap of last night's match.

First half play was interesting as the half ended with three goals from each team. Yes, in 45 minutes of play six goals were scored. Shockingly the game started with a 3-0 lead but dwindled to nothingness as the half drew out to a 3-3 draw at the break. The first goal to be scored in the high scoring affair between the two teams came from Sebastian Krister in the 7th minute off the pass from Mikel Araboa. 1-0. Next goal from the assister himself as Mikel scored another goal in the qualifiers in the 18th minute with a cheeky attempt that went right over the goalkeeper's reach. 2-0.

The last Felixian goal of the first half came from Kunibert Mathias as he shot a powerful long range shot went right into the net in the 21st minute. Making the Felixian home crowd go wild with happiness with a 3 goal lead. The next 24 minutes was going to be hell for the fans packed in the Estadio Nacional as The Sarian came back with three goals by Horn. One in the 28th minute, the next in the 35th and the last occurring in the 44th minute. By the time the referee called halftime the local fans were booing the team out, shocked and angered that the Felixians gave up a 3 goal lead.

The second half didn't show out that many goals (thank God) as Felix got a early goal in the 50th as Simo Roni (he substituted Mikel Araboa during halftime) scored the game winning goal with a bicycle kick into the net off the cross by Ji Iseul Kwan. The Felixians were in the lead and them and the home crowd hoped they could keep it. They did. Thanks to the toughened up defense made by Felixian defenders. The Sarian attempted to regain the draw with good attacks but the defense held on and they did their job well with Felix holding on till the very bitter end. Felix won the shootout, 4-3.

Felix won out of the shootout and now they move on to face up against the number one seeded team in Group 17, 15th ranked, Pasarga. Felix seriously needs to tighten up their defenses should they want to steal a win (or a draw) from the home side. I expect Ms. Ishikawa to change Alexis Garcia for Rubinho Mata and Manuele Provenza for Jon Vilmar. I sincerely hope those changes make huge strides to improve the Felixian defense as The Phoenix will need all they got in order to get that win and get an important three points. Should the Felixian team want to be in first (of course they would need some help from the The Sarian in order to be first).

That is all we got this week! Hope you enjoyed this edition of The National. Until next time and good luck to all your teams. Except if your Trigram goes like this, ''FFR''. In that case, you can go lose against some nation called the The Sarian.

World Cup 66 Qualifiers: Upset Win!
By: Steven Smith

Upset win here as Felix beats out the home side favourites with the score of 0-1! What a game! What an upset! And thanks to the gutsy performance by The Sarian (drawing against Mizuyuki), Felix is now first in Group 17. Its been a long time since Felix ever held the mantle as first place team in a group and the crowds celebrating the huge achievement have gone to the streets waving flags and singing patriotic hymns. Doing everything and anything to show that they are proud of the team that has conquered giants. Something that hasn't been seen since Felix beat 9th ranked Valladares, a old Felixian rival from two World Cups ago. Now, without further delay here is the recap.

The first half saw the game's only goal but it still proved to be the most important of them all as the goal made by Gabriel Jenaro in the 15th minute, assisted by Sebastian Krister, made history for the Felixian team. The goal was a low but powerful shot as the ball went pass the goalkeeper's grasp and went to the net giving Felix the historic one to zero lead over the opponents. Felix soon had to regroup as Pasarga had made some counterattacks on the Felixan side but the new and improved defense held on to stop the Pasargan onslaught. Halftime score in the hostile environment of the Pasargan national stadium, one nil.

The second half was a tug of war between the two warring sides as they both battled for the ball. Sometimes one side one other times, the opposite side one. On one occasion the Felixians caught Pasarga on the break and a goal was sure to be made but the goalkeeper made a crucial block and Felix was denied their second goal of the day. Likewise, the home side made some moves to tie up the scoreboard but those attempts didn't go through as Felix's goalkeeper, Matías Ciriaco, made the crucial blocks he needed to do. Felix eventually (despite a last second home side swamp attack) won the match, 1-0.

Felix now heads to break with the Group in her grasp and only needs a Mizuyuki draw or loss to keep up the lead. That is all from Felix I wish all of you reading a very merry holidays. Until next week, and good luck to all your teams. Except if you are a Republican dog or something crazy like that.

World Cup 66 Qualifiers: First Round Recap
By: Steven Smith

So Felix finishes off round one with a 6-0-2 record, 18 points, and is currently first in Group 17. Wow, who would of thought it? I mean I predicted a sort of good finish, but not this kind of finish, in the "Group of Death" that is just fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. So now I will come with my finishing predictions, mid qual prediction if you will. I'll start it off with the team that has been a sort of easy team to beat, Kung Yo.

KungYo (358)

We predicted a 8th place finish for the 358th ranked team in the world and it looks like we are going to get that as the team has totally been a non contender against teams big and small, but the victories against anyone here (not counting the Preiva win) is a surprise considering how many teams there are that have a lot of talent (not counting the Free Republics) and to even get a victory here is a tough thing to do and for that, we applaud the efforts of KungYo, still going to finish 8th though.

Preiva (UR)

Previa, oh Previa, becoming the sacrificial lamb of Group 17, so far they are winless in their imultiversal debut in football and it shows as facing them is basically a free three points. I don't see how the team can bounce back as they are certainly eliminated from contention. So I will predict the predictable as this team will certainly finish dead last in "The Group of Death".

The Sarian (178)

Look at this team being one of the surprise teams of qualifiers. The team is in 6th place and have done wonderfully well despite their lack of experience in the mulitversal football game. I am hopeful for them as I predict a surprise 5th place finish for the surprise team as they will upset some favourties. Hopefully they beat the Free Republics and give us a helping hand.

Pasarga (15)

Pasarga is in odd position as they finished the first round in fourth despite their number one seeding. They had some shock losses and frustrating draws but I predict more sunny things for the team as they will finish in a strong third just behind Mizuyuki by one point. Or if they beat Mizuyuki and clean up against lowly teams they could finish second. I am hoping for that because this team has the talent.

Felix (95)

Surprise, surprise. Felix is first at the break and has a chance to get a automatic qualifier if they continue this wonderful form. Felix has upset the best of the best this group has to offer such as West Angola and Pasarga, yet, Felix's only two blemishes came from Mizuyuki and Free Republics doesn't give the Felixian team the clear breakaway lead they need and so badly want. If Felix can fix up those two teams and maints their fabulous form I expect a 1st place finish and a trip to The Equestrian States or Cassadaigua.

Mizuyuki (51)

Mizuyuki who qualified for the previous World Cup and currently finished in second place before the break, looks to get first as they will face off again with group leaders Felix. Hopefully things can change for Felix and get the revenge win. But if Mizuyuki wins they will have their way in the tables as they could finish first. But I predict a Felixian win and a second place finish for Mizuyuki.

West Angola (29)

West Angola is a team I expect will improve their form and hopefully that can happen as the coach is going through some flak due to the 5th place finish for the second seeded team. I predict a 4th place finish as I don't expect them to beat Mizuyuki or Pasarga or Felix for that matter. Nonetheless I wish this team the best of luck as the team will certainly need it as this group is a tough nut to crack.

Free Republics (69)

They will finish 7th hopefully. Fuckers.

Vettrera (140)

Rumours are swirling that the Felixian Football Association (FFA) is going to help this nation's PUSH programme and they could use it as they are currently rebuilding their footballing culture after a long absence from it. Going back to the qualifiers I expect a 6th place finish for the team that hopefully can and will be stronger in the next qualifiers as the FFA (again, is rumoured) to assist in their rebuilding. Good luck to them and I hope they can beat the Free Republics. Because you know, its the FFR we are talking about.

That is all we got for previews here I hope Felix can steal a win from away against Mizuyuki as we certainly need it if we want to maintain this first place position we have here in Group 17. The week after that is West Angola which is determined to win after we beat them at home. And finally, to finish off, "Hell Weeks" for Felix is a trip to hell itself as Felix hopes to assert revenge to the Free Republics. Until next week folks! Stay Felixian, not Republican.

Halfway through qualifying, and despite only a single defeat, many are sceptical that Brenecia can hold onto their playoff place. But a team often described as 'patchwork' has nevertheless managed to tangle with the big boys... and more than hold their own. Unbeaten at home and with six straight clean sheets, Brenecia is either undergoing a true renaissance, benefiting from the wisdom of a world-class manager, or just a series of spirited performances from plucky underdogs.

To get an insider's perspective, 343Brenecia interviewer Carla Berenger was sent to meet Brenecian manager Jon Slatesaver, the man who has lead the Patriots into a new age. They met in his Rozelle apartment, over two glasses of black coffee...

CB: You know, this place is a lot more spartan than most people might think...
JS: Well, I have a house in Treason, but that's where the family are right now - for now I keep to where the training ground is, and where the players and staff can reach me if they have to.
CB: I suppose that's fair enough. Speaking of Treason, how does this job compare to managing them?
JS: Well, for one, the international quality's a lot more variable. On the one hand, we've got teams like Valanora - genuine world-class stars. But then you come away from that to play a team like Swansea, which is... I mean, to put it bluntly, literal amateurs. We went to Swansea right after edging out Sicoutimont, and that's a real difference in quality. In most leagues, the Sideburnese league among them, there's stronger and weaker teams, sure - it's gonna be a tall order for, say, Leichhardt, to take out Treason or one of the big Sabrefell sides, but Leichhardt's still a proper team with proper facilities, and they're expecting to make a decent fight of the season.
CB: Same deal with the A-League?
JS: I'd say one of the main appeals of the Brenecian league is how open and narrow it is - there's no matches at all you can ever be really sure of. But I digress - to get back to your point, the quality gap extends to the teams as well. I'm pretty lucky; the Patriots have quality running deep into the lineup, and while there's a couple stars - Allbeck and Kuepper are probably who people will name quickest - the team is overall on a very even footing throughout. And I think the lower-profile players have proven themselves, nobody can doubt that with performances like we've been having.
CB: And performances we can continue to have, do you think?
JS: Well... can, yes. Will we? That depends on a lot of factors. Llamaland's got to keep on the pressure, to do better than we do - it's not a matter of slipping up once and we're done. Don't get me wrong, though - I'm happy our fate is in our own hands, and we aren't just relying on anyone to fail.
CB: Do you think that final clash will decide things? Home to Llamaland, who are our closest rivals right now - that's a real six-pointer.
JS: Well, it's easy to forget with how often that phrase gets bandied around that it genuinely does influence things six points, between one getting the win and the other being denied. I think it could well come down to the last match, but I've got my eye on a couple other performances, too - Sicoutimont could still rally for second, and we'll want to push them back when we play them again, and I reckon Valanora might have a hard time away against us.
CB: That's very confident of you! But when you put it like that, centred very much around home games - all four matches at Union Park have been victories for the Patriots.
JS: The effect a home crowd has cannot be underestimated - we're blessed to have such a dedicated fanbase, I'd say a lot of credit does go to them in the end. My job is just to bring them the results they deserve.
CB: Nobody can deny you're doing that... so to the future. Do you see this as a golden generation, or-
JS: Can I just stop you there? No, this isn't a golden generation of any kind. Well, yeah, alright, we have some genuine talents here, I'm not denying that, but Brenecia has the ability to build its infrastructure and its prestige, so we can continue to play at this level for decades to come. Long-term success and stability has always been my goal, and I will assist the BFA in that goal however I can.
CB: It's ... clearly something you're very passionate about.
JS: That's about the size of it.
CB: Well, I'll let you get back to your preparations - but I'm sure all the readers of 343Brenecia wish you and the team well.
JS: I'll do my best not to disappoint them.

To 'do his best' not to 'disappoint' the fans ... the team has made leaps and strides since the last cycle. Morale is sky-high, but it's inevitable that with that will come expectation - Slatesaver is maybe only a little ahead of schedule in feeling the weight of them. But that's the future... for now, Brenecia may very well reach heights they, or indeed nearby New Sideburn - indeed, any Esportivan country last cycle - has experienced, and the team is determined to imprint itself upon history.

Kent Joseph's Column

So, we are 8th on the table, 1 win, 1 draw and 6 losses. Negative 9 difference, 9 for, 18 against.

We lost to unranked Julain, tied with high plaaced Antoletia and played well all around.

Now for the national all-time goal rankings:

1 - 6 goals - Kevin Arland
1 - 6 goals - Robert Hill
3 - 3 goals - Harrison Gin

Sidestory

The dracon storyline has ended. I am starting a new sidestory chronicling the rise of NexxusDrako from MT to PMT.

"We need to take all the near future tech from the Trans-Dimensional Warp, consumerize it, and militarize the dangerous ones!" I said to Lee.
Lee nodded and said "I will do so, but there is great risk, we've pushed our luck as it is!"
I nodded and thought for a moment, then it hit me.
"Take it from a nation that will soon rapture, like Scotni for instance." I said. (OOC: Scotni is my brother's old nation, it was PMT in his mind. It will CTE in 8 days.)
Lee nodded and proceeded to tell the workers of his plans.
Then my wife walked up to me, she was a hot brown haired supermodel type woman, but she had a heart of gold and the mind of a savant, three things which are almost never found together, but thanks to cloning, we got it working.
"So, James. Want to play another round of UICA 51 on the Titan you got from Gordonopian Games?" she said.
"Sure Samantha, I'll probably beat you again." I said.
We then went to play. I won 2-0.

Corvidae Triumphant

To say it was a failure would be rather harsh. The plan just... didn't go as planned. If I skimp on the details, it's because I don't want to feel the pain of what happened again.

We arrived at our camp successfully, and managed to remain undetected until we went over the top. I was tasked with driving a large SUV over the rocky terrain directly into the camp, where hopefully the bus would have broken through the gates. Our job then was to swarm the Corvidae guards and free any prisoners.

What actually happened was a little different. Even though it was dusk, the bus was still seen coming a mile off, and the sniper on the tower managed to shoot the tires of the vehicle while it was in transit. The bus veered to the side, and managed to roll on it's side many times before crashing into the side of the camp. While this would have been a good thing, it also crashed into a building where the prisoners were staying, knocking half of it down. I would later find out that several people were killed by this initial crash.

Scared out of my skin, I then had to dodge the shots that were being taken at me, while keeping the car still enough for one of our members (his name is Matt - he's good with a sniper) to pick off the guys in the watchtowers. Efforts were co-ordinated via radio, and I arrived at Olettia without any casualties in my SUV. We dismounted behind a building, guns at the ready, and kicked down the door to a nearby building. It was teeming with Corvidae guards. I blindly shot at them, but the Sunrisian who calls me Jeff was quick on his feet and threw a grenade into the group of guards. It took half the building down with it, and this was our second problem. Two of our members died trying to get out. A fire fight was in progress in the main courtyard, and I ended up covering Lloyd Pringle, head of the Fligsive Cell, as he pushed forward to Cell Block C.

I wasn't prepared for what I found when I entered Cell Block C. Hundreds of people, from many nations, 'living' in terrible conditions. The Sunrisian who calls me Jeff guarded the door along with two members of Lloyd's group, and we went around calming everyone down. They were frightened for their lives, and I could see why, as we were all wearing stolen Corvidae goods, with the badge ripped off. It took a while, but eventually they all agreed to come with us. We cleared the back door to the prison block, and called base camp to bring some more buses in.

This was our third mistake. Turns out Corvidae had patched into our communications, and after our initial break-in, they'd called in the big guns. I saw bright lights on the horizon, but didn't learn they were helicopters until I could hear the whirr of rotor blades on me. We packed everyone from Cell Block C onto about seven buses, and at this point I was sat in the back of one of them with a rifle taking pot shots at an all-terrain vehicle filled with Corvidae soldiers.

We got out of there, and dropped the prisoners off at the service station we met at. It was here that they were to be taken in smaller groups, so the chances of them getting spotted by Corvidae were slimmer. We'd given each person a change of clothes, so they didn't stick out too much, but a lot of them looked malnourished and weak. I stayed at the service station. More buses eventually came. People claimed they were from Cell Block B. They didn't talk about Cell Block A.

I later learned why. Corvidae had realised they were actually losing, so sent an attack helicopter over to Cell Block A to see what was going on. It was here that the fighting was at it's worst, with prisoners getting engaged in one-sided fist fights with unarmed guards, bullets being shot from both sides, and cars scrambling to funnel people out of the area. The attack helicopter simply fired missiles into the side of the building, levelling it to the ground. I still don't know if anyone survived.

I'm currently held up in Magnaeus, after finding a car to drive in with a couple that I rescued from Block C. They've apparently been there for months, after they were involved in a protest concerning one of Corvidae's new laws. I was too tired to talk to them at this point, and was just concerned with the drive back to the warehouse. There are many people here, and I think I'm about to pass out. The worst bit? This is just the beginning.

Postby Free Republics » Thu Dec 26, 2013 8:19 am

It was now the middle of qualifying. Rule Theriault's Republicans were 3rd in the group with 16 points, due to their losses against West Angola and Vettrera. This put them behind both Felix and Mizuyuki. Theriault could not stand the thought of finishing behind either of those nations. Since it was mid-qualifying, this meant that The Sarian was next and they were coming to the Free Republics. Since they had to play in the Free Republics, Theriault was certain that their pending attack wasn't going to happen until their team was safely out of the FFR. They were prepared and waiting.

Kyle Bolton spent part of his mid-qualifying break in Republica. Consul Piazza had contacted him and basically gave him no choice. It was either give up his DNA or face a Federation prosecution for obstruction of justice. While this may or may not have qualified as blackmail under the laws of the FFR, Bolton had agreed to do so. Within hours, the Junior Consul had the critical evidence he needed to prove Kyle Bolton's guilt or innocence.

After Bolton returned, Theriault's focus turned to getting his team ready to face Sarian at the RayDome. They arrived in Doranto well in advance of the start of their match, providing the players with plenty of time to hang out around the city. While most of the team did not feel comfortable going out to bars at the moment, due to the international situation, they still found things to do in the city. Theriault decided to take his team to a Fifi Dupont concert. Miss Dupont was, at the moment, one of the most popular singers in the Free Republics. However, she was known more for her sexually suggestive antics on-stage than for the quality of her music. Fifi had been a popular child actress around 10 years ago, but as she got older and wanted to stay relevant, she felt the need to shed her "good girl" image and become one of the most notorious "sluts" in the Free Republics. Rumors were flying that the beautiful 22-year-old singer spent every night with a different man and somehow, according to rumors, had managed to avoid catching any diseases. Despite this, she was still very popular with Republican young adults, both male and female. As the story went, every time she put on a concert, thousands of hook-ups occurred as a result. Theriault had taken his team to this concert because he was hopeful that they would find hook-ups at the concert and be loose when it was time for the match to begin.

However, that wasn't his only reason for doing this. Rule Theriault had traveled the world with Nova Hellstrom 2 years prior. Yet, although Nova repeatedly made advances on him, he had resisted those advances. A married man, Theriault had regretted his decision not to commit adultery for the past 2 years. By going to a Fifi Dupont concert, Theriault was hoping to find a younger woman whom he could carry on an affair with. He just wasn't that into his wife any longer, but remained married to her because of their twin sons, who had been born just a year and a half ago. Little did Theriault know that his wife had already committed adultery or that she was carrying on an affair with her golf instructor. Theriault detested golf and had only reluctantly agreed to pay for those lessons, after his wife was extremely persistent about it. The Theriaults did not have to worry about childcare because they had enough money to hire a nanny for their small children. Yet, Rule Theriault did not have enough money, or so he claimed, to pay the members of the Republican National Team more than enough for basic living expenses. Of the players on the National Team, only a handful of them actually had a house of their own. The rest of them were still living with their parents, whenever they were not traveling with Theriault.

Thus, Rule Theriault had to come up with other ways to compensate them. By ensuring that they had all the entertainment they wanted and doing everything possible to allow them to spend every night with a different woman, if they wanted to do so, Theriault could retain his team's loyalty and avoid questions about money. Money that he felt should be used for the benefit of his family, not the families of the disposable soccer players he had signed to his team. However, Kyle Bolton was certainly not disposable. As the captain of the team, their best player and a leader of the team, Bolton was too important to just toss to the side. Had it been anybody else, Theriault may have been willing to do something to shut up the Felix Trolls and their allies, but he wasn't going to lose his star player over some stupid tramp from Felix.

As Theriault had said in the press, his team was his private property. There was nothing that the Republican government could do about it, barring a Constitutional amendment, an amendment that he was certain his lobbyist friends in Republica could block. Theriault had carefully constructed the image of his team as a bunch of playboy soccer players and he was determined to maintain that image. It was the best way for him to recruit talented young players into his organization. This approach was well within the law, at least in the Free Republics, but there was significant controversy about it. Many felt that Theriault's team were bad influences on the youth of the Federation, youth who were already subjected to the "filth" of professional wrestling and "trashy" singers like Fifi Dupont. Many people, especially the elderly, were worried about the kind of stuff that the youth of the Federation were being exposed to. However, there was nothing that could be done, either about the "trashy" culture of the Free Republics or about Rule Theriault's control of his National Soccer Team.

Venicio Piazza sat in his office, with Kyle Bolton's DNA kept in a safe location. The Consul had an alert set on his favorite news aggregator that sent him an email every time Rule Theriault or Kyle Bolton was mentioned in an article. This had resulted in numerous articles showing up in his inbox about Rule Theriault's visit to a Fifi Dupont concert. This time, the Republican manager was actually photographed in the building with his team at this event. While it was a violation of Contoria privacy laws to publish information about whether they left with anybody else, it was clear that the Republican National Team was still looking for women to hook-up with, even during a rape investigation. Now, there was clear evidence that Theriault was either encouraging such behavior or, at the very least, did not disapprove of it. Consul Piazza was sure that Mrs. Theriault would have something to say about this, once her husband returned home after qualifying.

Consul Piazza looked at the news from around the multiverse. Saintland had been revealed to be funding quite a few rather sinister organizations. Despite this, nobody had yet discovered any such organizations in the Free Republics. Rule Theriault was still upset, last anybody had heard, that the Sanctii had put in a Casaran bid for the World Cup, handing the event to Cassadaigua and the Equestrian States, but Consul Piazza didn't care. As long as the Free Republics didn't waste more money on a World Cup bid, the Consul was happy. In fact, he wished that the Federation had just stayed out of international sports to begin with. Nothing good had come from it. Instead, these efforts had just brought controversy after controversy and led the Free Republics closer to war.

But, as much as Venicio leaned toward isolationism, that just wasn't an option any longer. The Republican military was looking to expand and it would be impossible for the Consul to pull his nation out of international sports. Indeed, he wasn't even able to regulate foreign exchange programs after a Republican teenager had ended up in a country where slavery was perfectly legal. This had been a total foreign relations debacle, as the teenager had given the Republican military access to the foreign nation's treasury, access which was used to fund major upgrades. These funds had brought about, in large part, the debacle that was upon us at the moment. Were it not for the military getting out of control, Consul Piazza believed, those hotheads in the Sarian wouldn't have tried to arrest members of Theriault's national team. While Venicio Piazza generally did not concern himself with the internal affairs of other nations, he simply wasn't going to permit individuals who were representing his nation abroad to be arrested without his consent.

Piazza was in all kinds of trouble politically after he had vetoed the Fair Game Act. The Party for National Greatness was now running commercials that accused him of being a traitor in league with the Sarian. Others in the press called him "soft" on the Federation's enemies. His approval ratings dropped into the 20s and his party's poll numbers for next year's midterms had now fallen to 5 percent. Senator Izmailov gave a speech on the floor of the Senate claiming that there was a "Fifth Column" within the Federation Government who were aiding and abetting the enemy and that this "Fifth Column" went all the way to the top. Consul Piazza was watching as everything he had worked for was slowly being lost, all because he wouldn't give his permission for a war. The military and its political allies were going to make his life a living hell if he didn't give in.

In fact, they had already done so. Consul Piazza's 9-year-old daughter had come up to him the previous night and asked him, "Daddy, what is a Fifth Column?" While he sent her to one of the most exclusive private schools in the city of Republica, that hadn't stopped her from being bullied as the daughter of an alleged traitor by some of the other girls at school. They had relished the opportunity, as a Consul's daughter was, under typical circumstances, considered the equivalent of royalty at that school and they just loved the opportunity to tear the "little princess" down. The Consul answered her, "Fabiola, that's not something you need to be worrying about. Study and enjoy your childhood and leave matters like that to me and your mother." At this moment, Piazza didn't care that he was using improper English. Fabiola continued "Daddy, you just don't understand! At school, they're calling me all these nasty names. Please make it stop!" Piazza promised to do just that, "I'll do what I can."

The following day, he called Senator Croteau, the former Progressive candidate, and asked to speak with her in his office. Sibyla Croteau was a radical Progressive who was one of Piazza's fiercest critics in the Senate. However, she nonetheless agreed to speak with the Consul, with the mutual understanding that whatever they said would remain confidential, between just the 2 of them.

Venicio Piazza - Senator, I thank you for accepting my invitation.

Sibyla Croteau - Mr. Consul, I appreciate the invitation.

Venicio Piazza - Good. My time is of the essence right now, so I'll cut right to the reason why I want to speak with you.

Sibyla Croteau - What might that be?

Venicio Piazza - Last night, my daughter came up to me and starting asking me about a "Fifth Column" and sounding like she was being bullied in school.

Sibyla Croteau was horrified. Although she thought the Consul was a sexist pig, she still recognized that families were off-limits and should be shielded from politics. Virtually the entire governing class of the Free Republics felt this way.

Sibyla Croteau - That is horrible. No girl should be bullied at school, even if her father is trying to cover up for rapists.

Venicio Piazza - Sibyla, I am NOT covering up for any rapists. I'm trying to keep us out of war, keep overzealous foreigners from arresting our citizens without evidence and bring the rapist to justice.

Sibyla Croteau - Really? It certainly doesn't seem like it. It looks more like you're just indecisively sitting on the fence while a rapist gets away with his crime and our country gets dragged into a large-scale war.

Venicio Piazza - I know it looks that way, but I've been communicating with the President of Felix, trying to work something out.

Sibyla Croteau - Is that why that gender-traitor from the wrestling matches strongly implied that somebody in the government wanted her to apologize for her pro-rape comments?

Venicio Piazza - Yes. I requested that she apologize and she went out there and ranted about her "Constitutional Rights" while failing to consider the consequences of what she said.

Sibyla Croteau - You certainly don't sound like a Radical these days.

Venicio Piazza - Its difficult to hold to our ideology when 1 stupid comment by some nobody can drag our Federation closer to war.

Sibyla Croteau - If I didn't know better, I'd say that you're becoming more and more Progressive by the day.

Venicio Piazza - With all due respect, I hope not. I just want to keep this country out of war, keep my daughter safe and prevent my party from being wiped out in next year's elections.

Sibyla Croteau - I'm surprised how sympathetic I feel for you right now. You're clearly in a tough situation.

Venicio Piazza - But, you can help me out. Since the press is aware that we are meeting, I request that you inform your fellow Senators that my daughter is being bullied at school, because of the comments of Senator Izmailov. I would appreciate if the Senate were to spend the next few weeks debating anti-bullying legislation rather than making ridiculous accusations that I am some kind of traitor to our Federation.

Sibyla Croteau - I'll do my best. In return, I want your support, once this all settles down, for some legislation to expand the rights of women and girls.

Venicio Piazza - You have my word that I'll work with you in drafting such legislation.

Consul Piazza was now going to have to stand up to NOM at some point. NOM would already be furious at him if his efforts succeeded in identifying the rapist, since NOM had adopted the firm position that no rape occurred and were not interested in evidence to the contrary. Instead, NOM alleged that the act had been consensual and called upon the Federation Government to go to war, if necessary, to avoid giving in. It was at this moment when he finally noticed the message from the President of Felix, warning him of an impending attack on Taiyou. He knew that he had to respond.

To: Luis Garcia, President of the Federal Republic of Felix
From: Venicio Piazza, Consul of the Federation of Free Republics
Re: The Deal
Encryption: High

I want to thank you for the information in your last message. I'm going to have to respectfully decline your suggestion regarding Theriault. Even if that stuff is not yet illegal, I still regard it as highly immoral and will not be considering any methods to brainwash Rule Theriault. However, I do have Kyle Bolton's DNA and will be sending it to you shortly. Should it turn out that Bolton is not the rapist, I will obtain DNA samples from the rest of the team. Again, this is conditional upon a lack of incidents in Mizuyuki. Remember, once the rapist is uncovered, you may announce that you know his identity, but should wait until the end of World Cup qualifying to reveal it. I can't afford to have a bunch of soccer hooligans standing outside of my residence waiting for an opportunity to tar and feather me for hurting the World Cup qualifying chances of Theriault's soccer team.

Signed,

Venicio Piazza

Consul Piazza sent the message. He was hopeful that things would begin to calm down soon. Otherwise, he would be in for a long 8 years as Consul.

Mangolana Gazzette

Second Half qualifying

As qualifying for the 67th World Cup enters the home stretch, Mangolana finds themselves positioned ahead of their projected finish but still, far, far away from being safely into the World Cup or even the Playoff positions, and with Mangolana's schedule being back heavy in terms of strength, Mangolana will need their best qualifying performance ever as they head to the dreamed realm on the second day of the second half of qualifying to play the jumping beans of the Holy Empire. Mangolana will also play at the current group leaders, United Gourdita, or Guam, or Guiermos, something along those lines for a name. Mangolana also must play at Hopnation, an unknown nation to many, but a a nation who is an up and comer in the world, who could make the World Cup in a few years time.

Mangolana will also enter the second half of qualifying looking for some new talent, as Mangolana manager Martín Tejera has expressed his desire to expand the national team roster for the next major competition, which would be the Copa Rushmori. He has stated that all options will be considered, including bringing in domestic team stars, youth team players, and possibly even some youth international talent that has some Mangolian blood in them. The expansion won't happen till next year at the earliest, but Tejera is already on the lookout for some star players to help fill its roster.

Why a Vaian?

Sports Columnist for the Madaai Observer

Ladies and gentlemen, behold the current standings for Group 11 in the World Cup Qualifiers. They don't make for particularly pleasant reading. How has a team of Paradystopia's repute managed such a feat of abject mediocrity? Personally, I would direct your complaints to the most recent addition to the team; Mukalo Rotanapai, our new manager.

I cannot comprehend any of the decisions this man and his assistant, the furball from the Mousebane Islet have made whilst in charge. The adoption of an ultra-defensive style of play (which is scarcely working, may I add), the dropping of many established and trustworthy players from the roster in favour of green, inexperienced youth and the laissez faire approach to order within the team. We need a manager who can grasp these Black Cats by the scruff of the neck and have them dancing to the tune of a more attacking style of football.

Sources state he has actually encouraged Paradystopi players to seek work in overseas leagues. Is he on a mission to single-handedly destroy our team chemistry? Look back to our last qualification campaign, we lost out a place to one team. One team who happened to be the best team in the entire multiverse at that point. Now, we can't even manage a home victory over the United Kingdoms of Zackalantis. Something has to change, and damn soon!

Paradystopia 1–0 Gloriax
Catholican Catholica 2–2 Paradystopia
Paradystopia 1–2 The United Kingdoms of Zackalantis
Charruterra 2–1 Paradystopia
Paradystopia 2–0 Marcos Dynamite
Vescia 0–1 Paradystopia
Paradystopia 0–0 Audioslavia
Qazox 0–0 Paradystopia

So here are the results that have lead to our fourth placed standing. One may draw attention to the no-score draw against two time World Cup winner Audioslavia but that was only due to the opponents good sportsmanship in the face of a Gregoryisgodistani referee.

Furthermore ...

Mukalo stopped reading and placed down the paper feeling considerably worse about the situation than he did before. There was certainly a wave of resentment building against him and he wondered whether this could be his shortest tenure as a manager to date.

The team were working on some set piece moves in the background, Chester mewing loudly his instructions. Perri Mournwinter wandered over to the dug-out where Mukalo sat. His ankle had more-or-less recovered but Rhuth would be starting the next match regardless, just to be on the safe side. He picked up the newspaper.

"You reading this?"
"I was."

Perri laughed.

"Don't bother."

Mukalo looked questioningly at the seated defender.

"Well, as I'm sure it is in any country, there are the good, unbiased newspapers and there are those which, well, are barely fit to use as toilet paper. The Observer falls into the latter."
"I see."
"Man! Don't tell me you were reading the Hjvs article? That guy is an arse of the highest calibre. Wow. We really need to teach you about Paradystopi news ... Kventin Hjvs is one of those people who wants nothing to change, ever. Always harks back to times when everything was rosy, apparently. Also, you know Xandre de Kolk?"
"The defender. At Hoxplohsiv?"
"Yeah yeah. Well, they're drinking buddies."
"So Mr Hjvs obviously has another agenda regarding de Kolk's omission from the national squad?"
"Exactly."
"And the opinion poll saying 68% of people want me to step down?"
"Ha. I'd read that more as 32% of the hateful pricks who actually read the Observer actually support you. Which isn't bad by their standards ... "
"Hmmm ... Do you think I should step down, or that I'm failing as a manager?"

Perri pondered for a few seconds.

"Transitions take time."
"That's not answering my question."
"I can't comment, really boss. This defensive style isn't really my thing and yeah, it might take a bit to get this formation working proper."

Mukalo nodded and began to muse on whether the polemic nonsense of the Observer was in fact based upon something truthful.

(OOC: For something a little different, an OOC RP looking back at one year on NationStates. Part Two will follow with a regular RP tomorrow, as it's 1am here and I really should go to bed.)

The History of Barunia from behind the keyboard
A year on NationStates

Jennifer...nation? Two words that rattled around in the memory. A game played long ago in high school. That was interesting, and the man behind the keyboard is bored. But what was it called? Jennifer seems like a strange name for a website, but try it anyway. Google. "Jennifer nation". Click."

The website found, easily enough. NationStates, built to promote the book Jennifer Government. One's original nation name long forgotten. Thus, with a few clicks a new nation emerges. Barunia, a name that has been in the user's head a while. Now a virtual reality. Thus the search begins, for a place to call home.

By chance, one stumbled on the region of the Furry Federation. A perfect home for the Furry behind the keyboard. But it was too large, and he was too small. So Barunia moved on, to the Commonwealth of Furry Peoples. A friendly place, but life is slow there, and he craved action.

He'd chosen a socialist nation, more reflecting of his views on corporate greed and power than political ideal. But once chosen, the ideology was committed. "Inalienable from the constitution of Barunia" was how he describe socialism in his first ever factbook. So, when browsing International Incidents, he came across a coup d'etat in Dakran, a fellow socialist, he decided to help out. His first war, and first RP went well, but ironically it would be the only successful and complete II roleplay he would participate in.

Browsing through the forums, he came across NS Sports. Having just answered an issue promoting motorsport in Barunia, Hodori's Domestic GT thread leapt out at him. Before he knew it, he was signed up and the Archer Motor Company was created. Archer would not stay in NS SPorts, but migrated to Global Economics and Trade. There Archer would sell its sports cars and miltary vehicles, using tiny pixel drawings painstakingly created. Before long, he would tire of that, though the idea would never die completely.

Vilitan Players Left Off Initial Tropicorp Roster

After the surprising announcement that Vilitan government-entitled but fully commercial entity Tropicorp would be putting together a team for the Inaugural NationStates Premier League season, questions quickly arose about whether or not the Tropicorp entry would be able to sway any Vilitan International players from the Vilitan League.

Thus far, the answer has been no. As a top 10 league recognized internationally by the UICA, the Stellar Division is home to the majority of the Vilitan international players who have steadfastly committed their future to their current clubs instead of jumping ship to the unproven team in the unproven international startup league.

The money and climate offered by Tropicorp as well as the challenge of a new international league has been a draw for other players, however, including Astograth forward Lander Estrougamou who is leaving Royal Rumiatzi to start a new career in the Vilitan outpost.

While Estrougamou has quickly established himself as the face of the team, arriving at port to media and fanfare and joining the Tropicorp CEO at a ceremonial 'ground breaking' event for the construction of a stadium on Tropicorp grounds, it is also clear that the NSPL's newest club is planning for the future, with youngsters from Audioslavia, Zwangzug and the Northern Sunrise Islands also signing for the club.

Meanwhile, the Vilitan National Team has pressed on despite the distractions associated with the transfer questions regarding potential big-name Vilitan signings to the Tropicorp club. Thankfully, for young Vilitan goalkeeper Zelkki Milake who has stole the show with a trio of shutouts in his first 3 international matches, the signing of Zwangzug goalkeeper Enitan Maclaurin to Tropicorp FC has greatly reduced the focus on what the media claimed was Milake's likely switch to the Calanian outpost club.

Others, however, have not been so lucky with modern-era Vilitan caps leader Jomur Hulyer at the peak of the transfer rumors.

Star United States 0–1 Levivania
Star United States faced Levivania at the Star Athletic Complex Center in Star United States. The match started off pretty even, where the ball was in possession for about the same time, and when the whistle whistled at the 45th minute, the match was tied 0-0. When the match resumed on the 46th Minute of the match, Levivania succeed and passed the ball through the hands of our goal keeper. Scoring the first and only goal of the match. The match came to an end with a score of 0-1. Levivania took an easy three points in the victory over Star United States.

Star United States will face New North Aqmuland once again. Last time these two teams played the came to a draw of 3 to 3. These brings anxouisness over us to see what team will come out victorious over the other. All we have to do is sit and watch.

The Zephyr People

Across oceans blue and purple
Far from the splendid sea of Amarathine
Beyond the eyes of the shiny coral coast
Too far for even the mightiest of dragon flights
Come a people that show promise of great measure.

Cleverness is one of their traits
Navigating the great divides between the realms
Their intellect is matched by few and fewer still
The skill with arithmetic the best to have graced mortal realms
And the calm demeanor of a people wise and more graceful
That even the other dominions of man held them most worthy.

They come in many faces and in masks aplenty
Hiding ever the true identity
But their presence is a great worth to the mortal realm
As they are put up in the positions of great power and authority
So carefully and wisely did they rule
That a monument to their glory and greatness decorate many halls.

But like the elves of old great tales
They come and go ever at a whim
One day they are mighty and many among the people
The next they are gone beyond any trace
They are the majestic zephyr people
And ever does even the elven eye seek their return
And desire their wise council
These clever and wise of people of the world.

Dimitri groaned a little bit as another burp came up from his stomach. Once again he had ate too much during the winter solstice celebrations and now his body was making him pay for it. Ah, but it was the holidays though, and the joy of seeing his brother and the rest of the family was far greater than any temporary discomfort the overeating was doing. There was plenty of reasons to celebrate though, as his brother had agreed that if Dimitri managed to find a job as a manager during the summer upon his completion of the manager's licenses classes, which looked quite likely now that he had passed the first two of the exams.

There was other news though, the like of which Dimitri had not expected to hear about in all of his lifetime. The Queen herself was going to attend one of the national team matches and see her people in action with her own two eyes. Which match it was however was being withheld from the public, for security reasons, or at least that was what the palace was saying. Dimitri suspected it was so that she could surprise both the team and the opposition with her presence, maybe put a bit of pressure on the lads and lasses to play well while intimidating the traveling team. Whichever was the truth, it was still huge news for the Queen to express any kind of interest at all in the prosperity of the sporting teams, as she more often than not had her attention elsewhere.

Perhaps it was a ploy by the sporting minister to try and elevate the level of the team to that which the nation had been expecting them to be coming into these qualifiers. The Tribune had done them absolutely no favors with that group preview, but with all things said, they were not in a terrible position. A win in the opening day of the second half of the qualifiers could vault them from fourth to second and right back into the hunt for the group title. Dimitri knew that this group was going to likely come down to the final matchday, with it seemingly apparent that each and everyone of the top five seeds could take points off the other on any given matchday. Despite what the KPB rankings showed, these squads thus far were far more equal than they were different.

That worried Dimitri, for if the Wanderers could not even get into second by the end of the qualification cycle, would they even invited into the Cup of Harmony? And if they were invited, would the PFA be able to swallow their pride and accept their invite, doing what was the best for the team itself? It all felt very precarious to him and it made him wonder if this was the same sort of feeling he would have when there was speculation that his job was in jeopardy as a manager. Perhaps being such a ardent supporter and follower of the national team activities was actually preparing him for the mental tests and strains that were going to come should he be hired.

Which made him wonder about another thing, both West Angola and Felix were predicting the Wanderers to bounce back and come through their difficulties to win the group. It sounded like a lot of mind games to him, build up the egos and confidence of the opposition to the point of overconfidence and complacency, then take the attack to them aggressively on the pitch. The media acting as a sort of military arm for their respective federations, if Dimitri's suspicions were correct and the lessons he had been learning were true about these sort of tricks of the trade.

All that being said, he was quite interested to see how the Wanderers would come out in the second half of qualifiers with two of the most difficult remaining matches coming in those first two match days. A win in West Angola would go a long way to making sure that the second seed would trouble them and the other contenders very little in the race for the top two. While Pasargans harbored no ill will for the West Angola side, they would sooner give them more misery in a difficult qualifying campaign than share in the misery with them. Following that up with the home fixture against The Free Republics, which honestly looked more and more like an evil empire to Dimitri, was asking a lot from the squad. They had already only managed to get two out of the nine points from the previous three difficult matches and this was asking even more, to get six out of six.

Yet that was what was needed to get this campaign going again in the right direction Dimitri knew. Could the players find it within themselves to play like their lives depended on it and could the Pasargan people turn Stade de Torgos into a fortress once more? Either of those would make the coming trials easier to navigate and both would make it all the more likely that those results came as needed. Perfection was a lot to ask for, but when the rest of the footballing world thinks of you as a top sixteen side, it is what is required of you to get the job done...
