Because they're done really badly most of the time. People use it as an excuse to go wild.

So what is Twilight a Princess of? I mean, we have Celestia & Luna, rulers of Equestria and Cadance who's the ruler of the Crystal Empire. I mean so far we've had three episodes, and a movie where Twilight Sparkle is a Princess and yet, we're not sure what her role as a ruler is.

She's Celestia's personal assistant. After some organisational work, she now has to find some lost keys.
