Goo on Vermont. Lets hope the rest of the Eastern Seaboard follow suit if it works out.

You'd rather it be introduced piecemeal with lots of differing regulations and not enough funding to make it work?

Canada has it providence by providence, it works fine.

I think one of the things holding back the democrats is they tend insist everything be done nationally, despite a large potion of the world using regional administered systems.

Yeah Vermont is Libertarian paradise nice gun rights, a single payer system reflecting the natural monopoly.

It is liberally like I were dictator of the state.

I think it resembles a paradise to me much like the Czech Republic. The problem is the US federal government still overpowers Vermont on many things.

It might be unconstitutional at the federal level, but states can do a lot of things the Feds cannot. This might be one of those things.

Good idea, but they're pretty much full-up...prisoners are being housed out of state as it is...

But, as a Vermont resident (not a Vermonter BTW) I approve of this move...I will be better off even if only by 25$ per month, which could be spent on better things...like drugs :)

Which is a good thing.

Plus, though I do support UHC, I think logistically it is more important for each state to control a UHC system.

It will certainly be interesting to see the effects of this on the cost of healthcare to those in Vermont. If there are significant drops in cost for the people of Vermont, then I might even be for it nationally, given the current alternative.

EDIT:

new cost controls in an effort to move away from a system in which the more procedures doctors and hospitals perform, the more they get paid, to one in which providers have a set budget to care for a set number of patients.

This is probably more important than the fact that its universal healthcare. We've known for years that we've been poorly incentivizing the healthcare industry, encouraging more to be done than is necessary.

Whatever. As long as you don't try to impose it on the rest of us.

Personally, I would like to see a private system with government subsidies for the poor and price controls. I think employer-provided health insurance should be eliminated and that all health insurance policies should be purchased on an individual or family basis, like car insurance or home insurance. Furthermore, all states should ensure that all minors have health coverage.

I thought you were a fiscal conservative? Surely you would want the state to go with the cost-effective solution of universal healthcare as opposed to the tremendous waste in what you just advocated?

I guess that depends on how you define "fiscal conservative."

Government healthcare is low-quality. Waiting periods are too long, facilities are decrepit, and individual freedom is curtailed.

Insurance companies are in the business to get a profit. That means the health outcomes are something that need to be constantly bought to attention by you, because the insurance company would earn more if you just went to a corner and withered away.

I believe a country should have multiple forms of free, preventative health care. This would cover things such as vaccinations, checks and minor operations. All cost some money, yet the cost to society of someone being unable to work is much greater. If an individual requires a major operation due to their lack of medical diligence, I do not want to pay for it. If an individual wants a standard check up and preventative health care can be taken, its best to do it now.

You do know how the Vermont plan works.

Yes, its universal. The only requirement is to learn French and then taking a bus ride (you could walk it if you want) into French Canada.

For this Vermont/French Canada crossing you will need a bus.

For this one you can walk across.
