In 1972, Franco Wagner pressed the band towards a new direction. No longer happy with the copycat, easy-going pop that they had been successful with the previous summer, Franco penned a song entitled ''Respectable Psychopath'. After teaching it to his fellow members, they tried it out in a gig at the 'Albion & The Wanderer' Pub, and although many of their former fans were put-off by this new direction they attracted a whole new fanbase.
Local Indie Producer Rodriguez Santini was present at that gig, and wow did he like what he heard. Heavy Metal Rock & Roll was still in its infancy in Nouvel Ecosse, but this did not put Santini off. Here was a real chance to introduce the market to the mass public. He contacted McAndrews, who was surprised to hear the popularity of this new song. Wagner, enjoying this new writing style, wrote three other songs, and when he introduced them to Santini, Rodriguez was impressed. He gave them a one album deal with his record company, Blue Oyster Records, and the legacy of Velociraptor Rex truly began.
"Employee of the Month" was an instant hit with critics around the country. The album combined heavy metal stylings with blistering guitar solos and unique percussion riffs, including the infamous Velociraptor Cowbell, which was adored by their new legions of fans. Their first tour, "Respectable Psychopaths", was a popular small-time affair, and although they had legions of fans they never quite topped into the charts. After numerous successful albums and tours, Velociraptor Rex disbanded in 1993 so that their members could move onto newer pastures. But their was an urge, both in the ex-members and in their fans, and in 2013, with Santini also back on board, Velociraptor Rex are returning to tour and with their new album, 'A Panther Mauled My Orphan'.
