Latin is the official spoken and written language of Novus Niciae. With all official government business and announcements and signs being made in Latin as well as it being taught as a compulsory unit in our primary and secondary education systems.

English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Tagalog are also widely used and television is transmitted with multiple audio streams dubbing the content in these languages as well as Latin.

90% of our citizens are bi-lingual in Latin and some other language.
5% speak Latin exclusively and the rest speak some other language and are required to attend free education centres to attain a basic understanding of spoken (or written in the case of the deaf) Latin at a minimum.

Our language is Jark'Tlun, and it is similar to English in sound, but is written differently. Most citizens don't learn to write English.

English, although there is a Scandinavian minority who speak Scandinavian languages.

Because of Hemenster's near-isolation from the British Isles for centuries, regional dialects of English have developed around Hemenster, especially in the countryside. The vast majority of Hemenstrians speak standard "Oxford" English, but many rural areas also have their own dialects which have evolved from Old and Middle English and some with Norman French.

The official and primary language is English, but the Gwynnic people, who were driven about 1500 years ago to the west and northern borders by the invading Chelts (not Celts) still speak their traditional language of Gwynnic in their communities. Gwynnic is a recognised language, but not an official one.

A sentence in Gwynnic would be: Hwyð yn gváryn craeg, dae hwyð siéred a hroek ev maechyn. (I am very tired, and I feel like going to sleep.)

(OOC: it's supposed to sound like a mix of Welsh and Icelandic lol)
