Postby Darmen » Sun Oct 06, 2013 1:29 pm

Rugby League World Cup XII

Darmen welcomes you to the Twelfth Rugby League World Cup, where 32 nations will compete to hoist the trophy that will be presented to the winners of the Final by His Royal Majesty Duke Francisco Lyons the XXth. If you're new to this whole Sports Role Play thing, this thread will help you out a lot. These threads may also help to answer your questions: General Questions, Rugby OOC.

Schedule
Draw: Monday, October 7th
MD1: Tuesday, October 8th
MD2: Wednesday, October 9th
MD3: Thursday, October 10th
Off Day: Friday, October 11th
Round of 16: Saturday, October 12th
Quarterfinals: Sunday, October 13th
Semifinals: Monday, October 14th
Final: Tuesday, October 15th

Cut-offs will occur between 7-9pm Central US time (I'll try to keep it closer to 7pm, but make no guarantees). Should I need to make any changes in the schedule, I'll try to give you a warning in advance.

Cuisine | Cacsene

No, we're not Mexico, or Valladares for that matter, so the food is safe to eat, and the water is clean. Most sit in restaurants will offer a menu based off of seafood, although beef and dairy are predominant in the southwest. Spanish food is very popular along the Darmen-Valladares border. Fast-food establishments like McDonalds and Arby's are quite popular, and are usually located in most large cities.

Darmen's public transportation system is quite extensive, and affordable. If you don't like public transportation that much, most large cities also have car rental companies.

Most Hotels in Darmen are owned and operated by the local town council, although several private chains also exist. Prices should be fairly low, in the range of NSD $50 to 60.

Weather | Wetserr
Darmen's weather is extremely unpredictable. It might be sunny and hot on one day, and rainy and cool the next. And by cool we mean about 80 degrees Farenhite. Daily weather forecasts can be found on the National Meteorlogical Agency's Website.

Currency | Currency
Darmen uses the Baba as its currency. The Baba is available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1,000 and 5,000. A single Baba can be split further into 500 Credits, with Credits available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 40, 50, 100 and 500. Both Babas and Credits are printed on paper, no coins exist. Currently, 1 Baba equals NSD $1.29.

Entertainment |
Liverpool is Darmen's Hollywood, so when there, expect to see Darmeni film stars quite often. Scott City has a whole district dedicated to theaters (300 in total), with both of the live act and movie kinds. Movie theaters are quite popular just about everywhere else, with most of the big cities have between 20 or 30.

Laws |
For the most part, if you only plan to go to the games, maybe eat at a few restraunts, and do a little sightseeing when not in your hotel room, you will not need to worry about breaking the law. If you plan on doing anything else however, or you believe something that you do regularly may be against the law, you should check ahead of time with the Ministry of Justice as to the legality of the act you may perform. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

Other important questions you may have
Q. Who is this guy in a suit following me?
A. He works for the IG-2, so don't mind him. Just keeping an eye on you foreigners. If you need any help they'll be happy to give it to you.

Q. How do I get a hold of the police?
A. Police stations are usually located in the center of town next to the Town Legislature. By phone, the police can be reached by simply dialing 1.

Q. And the fire department?
A. Dial 2.

Q. I'm bored, what is there to do?
A. Start throwing things at the IG-2 agent, see how he/she reacts. We're sure that's fun.

Q. This guy is asking me to show him my papers? What papers?
A. Upon arrival in Darmen, all foreigners are given ID papers, which last for one week. They're pink, and have "Ministry of Immigration" written at the top in nice big letters.

Q. Do I have to show him my papers?
A. It depends. Look behind you at the IG-2 agent, and if he's nodding his head, then do it. If he's not, duck. Someones about to get shot, and no, it's not you.

Q. So you'd like to move here?
A. Talk to the Ministry of Immigration.

Notes

Saintland has a very rough style of play and very few fouls in our national league, so don't hesitate to card Sanctii players, especially if Saintland loses. Rugby is the 3rd most popular form of football in Saintland. It is nowhere near as popular as soccer or gridiron. It also is not as popular as baseball, ice hockey or basketball. Rugby is roughly as popular as handball in Saintland. A RL comparison would be soccer in the US. The Saintland rugby team doesn't have the high expectations that come with representing Saintland in any of the big 5 sports. The Saintland National Rugby League Team has 4 brother combinations in the starting lineup and another on the bench. This team lacks a star player. Unlike the usual Sanctii captains, Desidenius is not a star player. He is a veteran who captains the St. Petrus rugby team. Desidenius is known for his veteran leadership, but he is merely a good player. If the Sanctii perform well, it will be through team play, not through the dominance of any single player. They are relatively tall players and most of them have played gridiron at the youth levels.

Captain: Thiago Menezes
Nickname: Greenblues, Dragonflies
Team colors: Green, Blue

Notes: The team plays defensive, yet still likes to gamble sometimes. They will do everything to win - except cheat (that is, as long as the opponent does not cheat either). They play a waiting game, looking for a lapse of judgment or concentration slipping away, then they strike. The players are not likely to get a card: they do not play violently or even remotely physical or rough. Rugby League is, in Ko-oren, a relatively small sport compared to football, baseball or gridiron. Even then, it is still smaller than Rugby Union, the sport our club teams do extremely, extremely well at. Union has had 12 seasons, while League has had only 2 seasons. It is on the rise though, and while Union is popular with the English and Welsh-speaking communities in the south and southwest of the country, League is more popular with the French and Portuguese-speaking communities in the south (hence the names).

OOC: I don't think I've ever spent more time on just three lines of text. Translating 'Rugby League national team' to 15 languages or so takes some time, but that's what you get for being a Babelic Meritocracy. And then I haven't even found reliable translations for Irish and Mongolian, so I've left them out. And I'm not too sure about Czech, Russian and Welsh.

RUGBY CORNER

LEAGUE WORLD CUP XII PREVIEW: DAWN IN DARMEN

By Jean Marc Charjan

Here I sit and ponder, with my IG-2 shadow not far from my side, as I prepare to cover the Goats in their second bid for League glory, this time in beautiful, scary, dreary...then beautiful again, Darmen. With advice from a colleague from NETV Sports 7, I have put my identity documents, most noticeably the infamous 'Pink Paper' from the Ministry of Immigration, in a clear plastic sleeve and pinned it to one arm. It looks silly, but it saves that arm from getting tired by raising the papers all the time. I need both to type.

Once again, the crew looks to take on some old adversaries and some new faces, as well. Unlike the Union and Association squads that have seen flocks of players trot off to all corners of the globe in search of fame, glory and a weightier paycheck; the League squad, the bastard cousin of Union, only has one International player, Benny Uzavarro, back from a season in the Frior Islands, a territory of Cyborg Holland. They have more to prove and less to gain than the Union boys, who are as we speak, slugging it out with the Esportivans in...Cyborg Holland, of all places, for the First Annual Autumn Festival there.

Image

They have a new coach, Devlin McHadraigh of Maltropia, taking the mantle from Coach Cosento, who has gone on to be the full time National Union Coach. Hopefully Dev has whipped them into shape, but he has scant time with which to work. While generally being a rugby powerhouse, Neu Engollon will surely once again be an underdog when it comes to League trials here in land of overly green. I will do my best to update you while at the same time, avoiding a lengthy stay in a dark, windowless accommodation courtesy of the Darmen Secret Police. Goat Power!

CYBORG HOLLAND SQUAD TO THE XII RLWC

It's a side that have never performed at the World Cup, despite their 2nd world ranking. It is a team which lacks power in the forwards, speed in the backs and individual talent. Playmakers Peter Janlock, Jacob Ossler and Aleksander Kottle have all retired. Two disappointing quarter-final losses in the last two editions have made people wonder what's really going on in there, because games are won so easily in the group stages, but then we reach the knock-out stages and we choke.

OOC: With the forum servers supposed to be down tonight, the start of the tournament may be pushed back to Wednesday night, depending on how long the forums are down. Also, for the purposes of this RP series, assume that the season has already finished before the start of the WC.

Darmeni Rugby League: Season VI

Matchday One
The sixth season of Darmeni Rugby League started off with a bang, as the reigning champions, Sterling City Rovers, defeated the Brham Broncos by the wide margin of 24-2. Johnho, one of the most dominant teams in the short history of Rugby League in Darmen, defeated the Tilden Vikings 28-9. Even Scott City AC, considered one of the worst teams in the League, got off to a good start, drawing with the Chuckio Reds, 16-16.
Tim City Tigers 9–10 Vogler City Rhinos
Brham Broncos 2–24 Sterling City Rovers
Scott City Bulls 13–0 Liverpool Wolves
Chuckio Reds 16–16 Scott City AC
Brady City Giants 16–8 Rogerton Wildcats
Tilden Vikings 9–28 Johnho
Romanopolis Warriors 24–6 Darmen City FC

Matchday Two
Johnho suffered an early defeat at the hands of the Romanopolis Warriors, losing 12-18. The Sterling City Rovers secured another win, moving one step closer to repeating as Champions. The Rovers defeated the Scott City Bulls, 14-5.
Vogler City Rhinos 22–8 Darmen City FC
Johnho 12–18 Romanopolis Warriors
Rogerton Wildcats 8–16 Tilden Vikings
Scott City AC 2–26 Brady City Giants
Liverpool Wolves 10–10 Chuckio Reds
Sterling City Rovers 14–5 Scott City Bulls
Tim City Tigers 6–16 Brham Broncos

Matchday Three
Despite not having any big names on their roster, and the lowest payroll in the league, Scott City AC secured their first victory of the campaign by defeating the Tilden Vikings, 6-3. The Vikings, who had finished third last season, were now struggling in ninth place. The Rovers and Rhinos secured quality wins, while Johnho need a last second field goal from Vicktor Averin to defeat Darmen City FC by the score of 14-13. Romanopolis and Rogerton drew, 8-8.
Brham Broncos 2–13 Vogler City Rhinos
Scott City Bulls 24–6 Tim City Tigers
Chuckio Reds 8–15 Sterling City Rovers
Brady City Giants 16–8 Liverpool Wolves
Tilden Vikings 3–6 Scott City AC
Romanopolis Warriors 8–8 Rogerton Wildcats
Darmen City FC 13–14 Johnho

Matchday Four
Johnho suffered their second loss of the season, this time to the Rhinos of Vogler City, 14-8. Johnho's struggles angered their loyal fan base, and calls for the Manager to be sacked were listened to. Or were they? Just hours after Vicktor Valineck was fired, the ownership of the club rehired him, deeming him to be the best candidate for the job. Many fans considered this simply a PR stunt to get fans riled up, and several thousand tickets for Johnho's next home match went up for sale around the city in boycott. The Vikings seemed to be getting things back on track with a 14-2 win over the Liverpool Wolves.
Vogler City Rhinos 14–8 Johnho
Rogerton Wildcats 0–22 Darmen City FC
Scott City AC 0–6 Romanopolis Warriors
Liverpool Wolves 2–14 Tilden Vikings
Sterling City Rovers 2–5 Brady City Giants
Tim City Tigers 0–14 Chuckio Reds
Brham Broncos 8–18 Scott City Bulls

Matchday Five
A high scoring shootout occurred between the Rhinos and the Bulls, with the Rhinos emerging victorious, 30-26. Michael Peters, the all-time leading try scorer for the national team, led the Rhinos to victory, scoring three tries and a field goal. The Tim City Tigers got their first win of the season over the Brady City Giants, 5-4. The Rovers defeated the Vikings, 16-6, and the Warriors topped the Wolves, 24-21, in two of the top matches on the day. Johnho shut out the Rogerton Wildcats, securing a 26-0 victory.
Scott City Bulls 26–30 Vogler City Rhinos
Chuckio Reds 9–2 Brham Broncos
Brady City Giants 4–5 Tim City Tigers
Tilden Vikings 6–16 Sterling City Rovers
Romanopolis Warriors 24–21 Liverpool Wolves
Darmen City FC 26–6 Scott City AC
Johnho 26–0 Rogerton Wildcats

And after five matchdays the League Table looks like this:
Darmeni Rugby League Pld W D L PF PA PD Pts
1 Vogler City Rhinos 5 5 0 0 89 53 +36 10

3 Sterling City Rovers 5 4 0 1 71 26 +45 8

Scott City AC were already half way to equaling their point tally from last season, while the Rhinos and Warriors were first and second in what was shaping up to be a four horse race to the title. But the Giants, who finished sixth in Season V, looked awkward in fourth place, and Johnho surely was better than fifth. And what about the Vikings. Surely they could do better than ninth.

Cadicarrech is to field its first representative Rugby league team, yes my Cadicarreig brethren, there is another type of our most beloved game! But unfortunately for our nation, the league game has less use for massive prop forwards from Frisk. (Frisk is an area of Cadicarrech settled by German immigrants that produces a statistically unbelievable amount of props) Nevertheless, we will show the other nations how to push a scrum! Which upon reading the lawbook, is actually legal! A matter of great annoyance is how a good old Cadicarreig droppie is worth just one point, how do we expect to score?

(OOC: I'm not really anti-league, its just artistic license with my nation. I play league myself in RL because I am not a massive forward!)

The Cadicarreig Rugby League Federation has announced the 19 proud warriors we will be taking to Darmen. Observed Cadicarreig will note that the numbers are the wrong way up, it doesn't really matter, the positions are all the same anyway!

Nassau Hessen Daily

National Rugby League Team Comes Up Short, Comes Away Content

Caddicarrech played stunningly in a performance Nassau Hessen would not forget. The first ever loss of the Nassau Hessen Squad supposedly should have been painful, especially since they lost by a fourteen point margin, but nonetheless, they had much support coming from El Mutiny Stadium that evening. At the end of the day, they truly had nothing to hang their heads over.

Caddicarrech (whom was also unranked) had played a truly great performance, there was no shame in the loss. It was a surprisingly clean game, there were no cheap shots nor any foul play. The undoubted highlight of the game for Nassau Hessen was near the very end, as time was running out and Nassau Hessen was in possession. The team decided to get quickly get a point to make the possesion worthwhile, they kicked a drop kick to earn their very first points ever officially marked, and at that moment the crowd erupted in cheers.

The team later that night celebrated the completion of their very first completed game and point at (ironically) a fast food restaurant (legally, for your information), where they signed a few autographs and such. Despite having such a positive attitude over their first loss, they realize that they must take a step up in being competitive. They will practice feverishly at El Mutiny stadium until their next game will arrive. Until then, they will celebrate and make merry. Even if they won't get to the next round, something tells them that they will go home satisfied, almost regardless of the score.

RLWC under way:could we have asked for a better start?

It was hard to find a sport that our nation was still unranked in. But there is one: Rugby League. The domestic leagues were only recently united in an international tournament, and the first RLWC in years has been organized. We've traveled all the way to Darmen to take our first steps into this tournament. Now it has to be said that we are not the only unranked team: two full pots and three more teams are unranked. That is 19 out of 32 teams. Still, it seems we could have played in a RLWC if we wanted: Lymantatia and Bloodbath Generation do have ranks for instance, and we're pretty certain that their national teams on average are younger than ours. In the end, we were put in Group A, together with fellow unranked team, Steelia, and the lowest ranked team in the tournament, Lymantatia. Then there is the easy favorite of the group, Saugeais, the third ranked team in the world. Saugeais' rank is not particularly through one good result, rather it is because they have competed very well in numerous tournaments, and the only medal they received at a RLWC was in the 10th edition, when they finished third. All in all, there are several ranked teams missing from the list of competing teams.

All this group's games are played in the city of Chuckio, in far southwest Darmen. The three games we play (Steelia, Lymantatia, Saugeais, in that order) are the first of the day, second of the day, and our closer is the first of the day again. This is another friendly reminder that should we last long in this tournament, all fans should extend their Darmeni ID papers, especially if they have traveled through Darmen for a few days before settling in Chuckio.

The first game has been played, and we are happy to announce that we actually did better than expected. In most sports, going in without a rank means that you lose the first five games or so before you get any success. Which means we like this sport already. As always, the Ko-orenites went into this game with a purely defensive mindset. Especially as a new team, going defensive often has you lose by less points, but in this case, somehow we made it to 20 points ourselves. The defense did help: we conceded a nice 0. There was hardly any language barrier on the field as well, as French was picked as the language spoken by most. In the case that a player did not already know French, they either play for a club in a Francophone area, or they just need to learn French in a few days very quickly. Most professional Rugby League teams are based in francophone communities: the city of Tangku (an island in Anglophone territory), but also the northeastern cities of Arelothun state, and northern Engbrothun state. There are also some Lusitanophones (that's Portuguese) on the team, but they can manage. Both languages are from the same family, after all. And as almost every Ko-orenite speaks about 3 to 4 languages anyway, it really is not a big deal.

The big score-fest started already a few minutes into the game. Fullback Chevalier took as many metres as he could before running into a Steelian. He passed to Teixeira, who took off and profited from a few gaps in the opponent's defense, making it all the way to the end of the field for the first try. The conversion was a different story, and it marked a tough period in the first 40-minute half. Both teams were struggling to find their footing, and after the fast 4-0 absolutely nothing happened. The closest to any point was Steelia, coming 8 metres short of a try and missing a drop goal by inches. Ko-oren responded after a while, actively looking for drop goals: if you can't make it to the goal line, at least get some points. In between a few misses, Daniel, Dupont and Menezes were successful: 7-0. The last goal marked the end of the first half, and after some pointers by the coach, the Greenblues came back on with a slightly less defensive strategy, somewhat more risks and the desire to just make it to the end while scoring as much as possible. Five minutes in, and Cooper comes close to a try. Before he goes down, Teixeira picks up and passes all the way from the right hand side to the left side, and reached Lambert (who immediately went down in the huddle). From there, Dupont ran past the groups of players, scoring 11-0. The conversion was a success this time: 13-0. From that point, the Steelians just tried to keep the damage to 13 points, but the Greenblues did not stop. Another try after 37 minutes in the second half and a conversion (Menezes with the try) and the score was 19-0. A slightly lucky drop kick by Martin fell between the goal posts, fixing the score to 20-0. What a start!

The next game is against Lymantatia, and with a three-game group stage, winning the next almost already puts you in the second round. That's even before the game against Saugeais. Losing this game makes the rest of the tournament a hell, as we have to beat Saugeais to go to the next round in that case. But with a start like this, can Lymantatia stop us (we could say yes, they kept Saugeais to a 0-2 victory!)? Let's just say the most important thing was that we kept our goal line clean, and go into the second match like we started the first: with the feeling that we have nothing to lose.
