HOSTING BID FOR THE GAMES OF THE V OLYMPIAD

Outineau, the heart of Kel-chek frenchieness, brimming with arts and culture, where the food's good, the drink even better, the people are cool, and the fries are thick and frequently slathered with gravy and cheese curds. Buskers compete to play the oddest instruments possible, you're never sure if you're looking at a strange road sign or an installation art piece, you spill out from the bars at last call and straight into all-night coffee bars with jazz bands playing till sunrise, where you discuss the importance of proletarian class solidarity with the coat rack while your liver sighs and gets on with processing the booze. It's the country's second-largest city but no one doubts that Outineau is the place to be if you're young and hip or old and sophisticated. The boring CEO-wannabes and mainstreamers can have Kirkenes. Outineau, the City of Festivals, is where you go to live.

Facilities
Stade olympique d'Outineau was built over 30 years ago with the idea that it would live up to its name at some point. Now, an amount of money that just might take until men have babies to recoup is being put into building a not-very-phallic inclined tower to hold broadcast booths and the cauldron, add 20,000 seats for a total of over 60,000, and expand the aquatics arena, add a velodrome, and one new indoor arena which will no doubt be named after a local sporting hero (probably a hockey player) and host some very important events. We'll also do something about the extreme amounts of bare concrete which we understand made many interior designers unable to enter the stadium without suffering fits. The new and very nice Stade Outineau, which hosted the final of World Cup 46, will also be used for the Olympics, probably, just maybe. Facilities at Desjardins University and the Université de Outineau will also be used.

More importantly:

Scorination
xkoranate will be used for scorination. Entries will be limited to 500, the same limit used for the 4th Summer Olympics.

Schedule
The real-life summer Olympics are held over 2 weeks. I intend to stretch this to 3 weeks (21 days) in the interests of my and your sanity. At this time I propose to hold the events from 3 to 24 July 2010. To avoid overlap with other major events (well, I'd just try to avoid clashing with the World Cup, really) I could move this a little backwards or forwards, but I do intend to be travelling in August, so that is the main constraint.

Events
The medal events contested will be identical to those for the 4th Summer Olympics, with the additions of rugby sevens and golf - they'll only be in the real Olympics in 2016, but we don't have to wait that long (even though I'm personally less than enthusiastic about golf at the Olympics). Of course, this comes subject to the executive committee putting out an official mandatory events list, in which case this may change to comply with the Olympic Charter. Demonstration sports will be accepted based both on support for them and my discretion - there's no point in having a demonstration event I can't scorinate.

Experience
The Summer Olympics are probably the most demanding event to host. The most relevant testament to my ability to host this event would be my hosting of the second-most demanding event, the Winter Olympics. However, I've also hosted numerous other competitions including co-hosting World Cup 46 and the World Cup of Hockey and Rugby World Cup multiple times.

I'm willing to listen to concerns from those who'd like things to be done differently, of course.

Edit: This is the proposed event list. Unfortunately, as the Olympic Charter events lists exclude rugby sevens and golf, I will not be able to hold them as medal events as previously stated.

Now don't nail me to the cross if I seem crazy, but I don't see why we have to adhere 100% to the real Olympics. As in, say there's not enough interest in Golf to be added to the programme but instead we could place in Am. Football, or some other sport that we prefer. These are the OUR Olympics...

Well, let me change the emphasis on that statement to "These are our Olympics".

I can't speak for everyone else but at least for me, the attraction and fun of this is that it's just like the real Olympics. A large part of that is the same events, in the same sports. Otherwise, why even bother calling it the "Olympics"? If you want a multi-sport event where you can just have the sports you like and none you don't, well, you can start your own, as some people already have with reasonable success. In any case, for gridiron, there's the World Bowl.

I don't think golf belongs in the RL Olympics because it's already a well-established professional sport for which the Olympics will almost be a sideshow rather than a big event; but those are my personal opinions, and it's not even a topic I feel very strongly about. It's completely irrelevant to the context of the NS Olympics.

Plus, to contend with the specific example, American football has been a demonstration sport at the three Summer Olympics in the UCS, and there's been barely any roleplaying in it, so it's not a particularly strong contender for promotion.

I'll admit that it's a technicallity/pedancticness, but we don't actually adhere 100% to them anyway. We've had women's boxing for example, and proper equality between men and women in cycling without getting rid of pefectly decent events to bring shitty ones in to make it equal (yes, omnium I mean you).

Hr'rmm, if Golf is being added to the list of 'official' events then the Bears would like to nominate 'Crazy Golf' -- which is MUCH more fun -- as a 'demonstration' one...

Kelssek, I have a couple of questions:

1. Olympic Charter be damned, have you thought about eliminating any medal events? (Men's) rhythmic gymnastics springs to mind, pentathlon would be another possibilibunter.

2. Aeropag had a bit of an orgy of demonstration events. Is there going to be a hard limit on numbers to avoid them spiralling out of control?

3. Baseball/softball?

1. No, and neither would I like to get rid of men's synchronised swimming or other gender-neutral add-ons. For now I intend to run events at 4th Summer Olympics plus rugby sevens and golf.

2. I definitely don't want too many demonstration sports, and I'd like to keep them to a minimum, but at the same time I recognise a lot of people do have a certain desire to see certain sports contested. Don't hold me to this if I'm uncommonly filled with love and generosity all this summer (which is not entirely out of the question, given one common nickname for my home city is "Vansterdam"), but I'd say 5 demonstration events is plenty and I'd not like to see more than that.

3. I don't intend to hold baseball and softball as medal events, given that they've been dropped from the RL Olympic program and weren't contested at Aeropag either.

Geeeez, submitting bids already? It's barely past St. Pats... Man, looks like I'm going to have to get to work so I can lose another vote, heh.

Just a word, just so people don't start thinking I'm dead or anything. I'm without internet right now and have been without it since Sunday. According to Murphy's Law, when you spread the word that you'll be away for a couple of weeks cause you're going on a trip, the hotel has free wireless, but when you move into a house which is supposed to have internet already, it actually doesn't, and then Shaw sends its guy in a van - after 4 working days - to park outside your house while you wonder when the hell he's coming out, only for him to drive off leaving an inexplicable "why the fuck aren't you guys home?" note. Then when you call to complain they fob you off with excuses and claim the best they can do is send him again next Wednesday. So, I'm sorry about this.

Also, I have to add that I'm only 80% sure about being free enough to run a summer Olympics so a competing bid would be a very good idea.

what about partner cities hosting the games. If we could find a partner city, would the person in charge allow a joint olympics? They do it in the real olympics with Beijing and Hong Kong

non-official:
Would anyone want to do a partner host with me?

Being very frank, I don't think anyone would support an Olympic bid from someone who's been on NS two days. It takes a LOT — and I mean a LOT — of work, and someone who's new and hasn't hosted anything else before is not the person to run the NS Olympics.

Adding on to what Liventia is saying, if you really want to host something, then I suggest a small invitational Football (soccer) tournament. There are plenty of easy to use scorinators handy to use, with NSFS 2.0.7 being the easiest for newcomers to adapt to. If you are just looking to create results, then I suggest creating your own domestic football league. Hosting the Olympics is an extremely difficult task, one that not even I (a very experienced host) would dream on taking on. Think smaller and if the Olympics are truly your goal, then this time next year, you will have the experience hosting to try and attempt something of this magnitude.
World Cup 40, 42, 43, 52, & 61 Champions
WC 47, 51, 94, 97 (2nd), WC 34, 38, 39, 41, 44, 45, 53, 60, 67, 92, 95 (3rd), WC 49, 58, 87, 90 (Semifinalist), WC 33, 35-37, 46, 48, 54, 55, 62, 63, 65, 72, 83, 85, 86, 88, 91, 96, 98, 99, 100 (Quarterfinalist)
WCoH 7, 8, 17, 28, 30, 32, 51, 52, 54 (1st), WCoH 1, 31, 40, 42, 43, 45 (2nd), WCoH 2, 6, 24, 26, 29, 50, 55 (3rd)
Co-Hosted: too many events to count

EPL Season 21,102

I am that which I am and choose to be.

i want that to be a learning expirience for me. plus Kelssek doesn't want to be the only bid. and you guys trying to get the idea of a joint host out so i wouldn't be the only person hosting the olympics.

I'm sorry, but as Valanora has said, the Olympics is not the stage for a "learning experience". This is the biggest stage in the whole of NS sports. It is the toughest event to run. Many very experienced hosts wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. You have raw enthusiasm, and I don't want to dampen it. It is good, but you will be burnt out by the Olympics. You have to start small and aim high; not vice-versa.

A beta version of xkoranate 0.3 (currently suitable for scorinating summer sports—specifically, all events contested at Aeropag, but no new events yet like the omnium) is now available, in Windows and Mac OS flavors (or source code), to anyone seeking to submit a bid to host the Games of the V Olympiad. Please contact me by TG if you wish to see it before you bid.

Speaking of which, the deadline for bids to host the Games of the V Olympiad is tentatively set as 16:00 UTC on Friday, 2010-05-28. The host selection vote will take place in the week following the deadline.
The base list of events to be contested in the Games of the Olympiad remains that from Beijing 2008; bidders may augment that list with any change to be made for London 2012 (as well as with the usual gender equality stuff). Rugby sevens and golf should not be included as medal events until after 2012, but bids may confirm their inclusion as demonstration events.

Good question. The following sports definitely have their own championships:
1. Association football
2. Baseball
3. Basketball
4. Handball
5. Table tennis
6. Tennis
There have been world championships in fencing and field hockey, but they should probably be considered inactive. There have also been sporadic road cycling events.

As to an answer: bearing in mind that having our own dedicated forum has vastly increased the number of tournaments and that the "NS Sport calendar" is now very crowded, I do have a couple of ideas, but I was probably going to wait till after Babbles's multisports tournaments finish.

I had volleyball as a part of the Qazoxian Sports Festivals, both Sand and Indoor along with snow-mobile racing. We've had 2-4 tennis tours and a couple of attempted golf seasons. Cricket's been done, as well as surfing NASCAR and F-1.

I'm trying to get interest in the "X-games", which would add skateboarding, in-line skating; BMX and Motor-Cross to things we've done.

We're running out of sports!

I could always attempt to start a badminton league...
