Fake geek girls-male insecurity or icky fandom ruiners?

Postby Potenco » Sat Sep 07, 2013 7:02 am

I have heard much concern over "fake geek girls", something that ive become deeply cynical over.

On one hand, I do understand the concern but frankly I just think that calling oneself a geek has become mainstream in general, but that gives no reason to detest these women specifically. These girls are part of a greater mainstream trend and frankly its nice to see some pretty girls at a con, even if the dont know a Kilingon from a clip on tie.

Further, quite frankly being dumb enough to refer to these girls as "whores" like so many misogynist geeks do is really really dumb. I imagine if I suggested requiring a minimum IQ (rather than a minimum IQ of some sort of fandom or whatever) most of these mouthbreather assholes would be horrified.

Dont get me wrong, I find fake geeks really annoying too, its simply that calling out girls specificlly is rather sexist. I personally feel that a person should have to at least read textbooks for fun to consider themselves geeks. A person who simply watches Anime is pretty much just a dork if he has no desire to learn.

Sorry abut the bloggish OP. What do you think of the growing paranoia over "fake geek girls"

This is an odd topic. I can't say I've ever really met one.

Also, I'm not sure if there are many "geeks" around if they have to read textbooks for fun.

This guy said it pretty well.

There is no proper definition for geek (even if it is in a dictionary), it's just a slang word often used as an insult to someone who is being who they are.

The whole idea of "fake geek girls" is some misogynistic bullshit. People who aren't woefully insecure don't react to "someone else appears to enjoy the same hobby I do" by throwing a tantrum or testing them to see if they do their hobby "right." They just say, "Oh, cool, I also like that thing!"

I'd have to agree with this. Self-identifying as a Geek or Nerd or something that separates you from the norm because you might not exactly fit in with some other social group, and then ridiculing those that don't meet a set of standards for your self-imposed social class just causes divisions and makes everyone hate each other.

I suppose it makes sense. Being intelligent is becoming a bigger attraction as far as friends and significant others go than being strong/athletic, it seems. Smart is the new sexy. The fact that the Big Bang Theory came along and popularized the culture doesn't hurt either, but I think they refer to themselves as nerds instead of geeks.

Exodus, Gods Among Mortals

Infinity Incorporated is a sovereign nation, not just a company. I am an FT roleplay that roleplays with people from PMT[most likely later PMT] and, if welcomed, MT for a bit of flare and nostalgia from science fiction stuff.

And as a FT roleplayer I find that the NSEconomy calculator doesn't work to well so I will most likely be using that for the company part of me.

As far as I am concerned rule #1 of being a nerd is that you don't identify your self as one. It's something others call you. If you do it your self first than you are a poser. Especially if you try and convince others that you are.

Than again what should I know. I wear long hair, listen to metal music, go to concerts, play D&D, read books for fun and engage in professional computer programming. And I don't consider my self one.
