Random question time. Is there any particular reason why the Germans did not start using sloped armor much sooner than they historically did? Given that all the other sides of WW2 had used it much sooner, the French doing so as early as the FT-17 it is a bit confusing to me.

A mixture of a lot of factors, I would imagine, but I would say simple oversight and a lack of coordination was the issue. The RFPs the German military put out were pretty vague, as demonstrated by the huge difference in size, weight, and capability between the two prototypes submitted for the Panther contract. So it really came down to the individual designers and their companies.

Plus, turret design contracts were separate from hull design contracts, and in some cases it was easier to use flatter plates for manufacturing. The Tiger I's turret was essentially composed of only three pieces: a U-shaped plate for the sides and rear and a flat plate for the front and roof.

I am trying to design a militia/ reserve unit that would serve as the last line of defense for The High Tatras if it were invaded. I plan for it to be made up of civilians that will receive 90 days of basic training and then one additional weekend of training per month. They will be trained specifically for guerrila warfare and urban warfare, because I believe that is how they are most likely to be used. They will also assist the regular army in building field fortifications and in sentry duties. Most of them will be armed with inexpensive short-ranged weapons that will not take much training to use effectively, such as submachine guns (such as the MP40 and the MP 3008) and maybe even some early assault rifles (such as the Sturmgewehr 44 and the Gustloff Volksturmgewehr).

Is this concept plausible and realistic? Equally importantly, is this concept inexpensive and economical? Keep in mind that The High Tatras is at a WWII tech level and uses mostly German equipment in its military.

Whether it's expensive depends on how many people you have in this militia. More is obviously more expensive.

Define "ground spying operations". What is it that a Global Hawk UAV couldn't do? Or an informant?

Maybe for breach and clear ops? My military is founded around urban warfare....

I'd stick to a manned team. Equip them with snake cameras so they can look through cracks, windows and under doors without being spotted. SWAT uses these with great efficiency.

At this moment, there isn't really a drone that can do such work because of the asymmetry in Urban Warfare. Otherwise, if you really want a drone, use the Talon bot with its M249 attached.

Driver placement is partially the issue. It's kind of difficult arranging things around a slope. The flat frontal part of many tanks then were to place the driver's viewer port, even in the well sloped Valentine.

Naturally with modern APFSDS-DU penetrators that dig in, such a table isn't representative.

Is there something to the idea of universal reserves. That is to say, all adults or a subset of adults trained as a reserve army?

My storyline for RS involves the constant shadow of invasion, so I was basically picturing mandatory preperism.
