Konrad watched as the hillside erupted in flame and smoke, lighting up the night. His SS stormtroopers weren't phased by the explosions - they kept plowing forwards onto the steep hill, many of them already opening fire with their Schmeissers on the top of the hill itself. Konrad winced slightly at that - it was a bit of a waste of ammo, but perhaps it would have some effect on suppressing the enemy.
"All panzers, cease fire. Our troops are now moving into position. I repeat, cease firing."

At Page's order, what was left of the strike force abandoned their positions on the hillside and scrambled desperately uphill. The charging German forces on the French side of the hill could be heard, their jackboots pounding the dirt, the orders of their NCO's ringing out through the air. Much of the fire on the Spanish side was slackening off, however. In the back of his mind, Page could guess at why. The Spaniards got hit pretty badly in our ambush, and now that the Germans are here to pick up their slack, they're letting them handle the lion's share. Cowardly, but it makes sense.

It was good that this operation apparently now came down to running - a cold, creeping fear was now taking over his brain, making doing much beyond acting on animal instinct very difficult. He couldn't believe that things had gone this badly wrong. This was meant to be a simple surprise operation, hardly any opposition had even been foreseen by them time they landed. But somehow, the Germans had known enough about what was to happen to send what looked like a whole damn SS division to the border line to wait for them, and the Spaniards had known enough to stake out the tunnel entrance and send out advance patrols.

Clearly, somebody had badly fucked up somewhere.
Or... Somebody sold us out.

Page banished the thought from his head. Not helpful right now. Comes to the same thing either way. All he could do was focus on completing the mission, at all costs - setup or no, this thing had to be done, even if it came down to him alone. There was still time - and surely they could hold off the SS troops for the time it took to plant the charges?

Despite all his optimism, all the faith in the squadron that he had, and all the faith he had in the luck that carried them through Poland, Uruguay, France, Egypt...and a thousand other impossible struggles in dozens of places that they'd all fought through on their own...he couldn't make himself believe that they would be coming out of this in one piece. The odds were just too long, now. No matter how fast he ran, how fast they planted the charges, or how individually skilled they all were, they had lost the element of surprise in the middle of enemy territory, outnumbered by hundreds, and with an escape path that was now thrown totally in doubt. They may have been the best, but the best were only human, after all.

Up ahead, he could see a trio of grates cut into the ground, right at the apex of the hill - right where the tunnel cut through the center. These could only be the ventilation shafts. While he sprinted to the apex, he noticed that he was first - they rest of the squadron and the partisans were still coming in behind him. He kept running to the other side of the hill, and looked down at the French side of the slope.

No less than 20 feet away, an SS squad was climbing, nearly on hands and knees, in the steep incline. His eyes wide and wild, Page angled his Thompson down, and let the whole magazine rip. The unfortunate Schutzstaffel men tumbled back down the hill, their yells of surprise and pain heralding their fall to the bottom. He sneaked a split-second look back to the rally point, seeing that most of the rest had arrived, panting desperately. None of the Spanish were visible on their tail - evidently, they were handing off whatever sick trap this was entirely to the Germans. Swapping out his mag, he pulled back from the rim, toting the SMG with one hand.

His panic became even more focused when he saw Talbot - I.E. the man carrying a great deal of the explosives - was missing.
"Where the hell did Geoff go?"
At this, Sword Eight piped up. "I think I-"
Then, with a wet thwup, a bright red hole explosively bloomed in the middle of his throat, and he collapsed over backwards, clearly dead. Page turned instinctively and saw an SS man with a rifle peeking over the rim. Time seemed to slow as the rifle swung towards him, the SS man's hand throwing the bolt back. His eyes locked on Page. The Captain swiveled around and leveled the Thompson, his finger twitching to release one bullet. It collided with the SS soldier's head, sending him falling down to join his brethren.

At that, Isabelle sighed and motioned her team up to cover the slope. This gave Page at least a little bit of breathing room to lay the charges.
But first, he turned back to the group. His mind was nearly paralyzed by the old fear again, but in his gut, he knew what he had to do. It was now just a matter of doing it before he started trying to weasel his way out of it and kill everyone else. He was too wired and too distracted to even devote much of a thought to Eight's death - it had happened so suddenly, it really didn't even have time to sink in. He just didn't have room in his mind to deal with it right now, like he had when McArvon died. He knew he would later, though.

He quickly ran over to Isabelle's position.
"I need to borrow one of your people!"
She looked at him like he was crazy. "For what!?"
As he told her his last-gasp plan, she at first shook her head, and took another shot at some SS target below the rim. "No way in hell. We lost too many people already, I can't-"
"If you don't," he argued back, "I'm probably going to lose my whole team. This place is a natural killing zone here, surely you can hold it for just a minute or two with three people?"
A bullet whistled past not a foot away from his head. "Fine. But if you take any longer than a damn minute setting those charges, I'm killing you myself and that's a promise."
She motioned one of the partisans back towards the squadron, and yelled a few orders in Spanish at him. Without question, he crawled away from his shooting position and made his way over the the group.

He had to yell to make himself heard over the din of the firing.
"ALL OF YOU, GATHER AROUND!"

The squadron moved up to Page's position, hunched over and eyes on the rim to avoid any more potential repeats of what had happened to Eight. As they did so, Page began extracting the explosives from his backpack, setting them around the shaft. it had been a while since his training, but he knew what he had to do.

"I need all of you - and Talbot, assuming he isn't dead and you can find him - to get the hell back to the mesa at absolute top speed and get the fuck out of here and back to the Illustrious. Do you hear me? I'll stay behind to make sure these'" he pointed to the charges, "-get set and planted. But I don't need all of you here for that. I'd guess those big guns the Krauts have over the hill are bombarding the airfield, so the longer you stay here, the less likely chance you'll have of getting out alive."
He motioned the partisan over. "Senor...erm...Cómo te llamas, Senor?"
"Pedro," the man answered in a monotone, expression not changing.
Page clapped him on the back. "All right, Senor Pedro here will lead you back to the airfield, tan rápido como sea posible, verdad?"
He nodded.

Page continued: "I'll stay behind, set these charges, and do my best to catch up."

Samantha listened intently while the Captain spoke the plan. Of course, if anyone was going to stay behind, it was going to be him. She wasn't even going to try to tell him how crazy this was, or why he should let someone else do it. That would only delay them longer and cause someone else's death. "You come back, sir. And in one piece." She said. She leaned forward to one of his ears and gave a whispered hiss. "And if you find whoever snitched, I want to know." She left it at that for Page to decide whether she just wanted to know or if she wanted something more. "So we find Talbot and we get out. I'd rather not have someone left behind, like the rest of you, right?" She looked around her, as if the man himself would suddenly appear. "But we need to start moving sooner than now if we're going to make it back, so maybe we should send half the squadron with Pedro and the other half to find Talbot and then catch up. Does that sound good, sir?"

Stanford fumbled around with the holster that was still, unaccountably, attached to his belt. The holster was made of fine leather and it was well tailored; it had been a gift from his father, the day after he'd enlisted into the Air Force. It had remained unused until this operation, as he'd never had need for a sidearm over England. Now the holster snugly contained a Browning Hi-Power handgun, designed by the famous John Browning. Stanford had gladly taken his pistol over the Webley IV that most officers carried these days. As far as he was concerned, the more bullets he had the better.

Using his right hand only, he somehow managed to unclip the flap of the holster and draw the weapon. Silently, he thanked his stars that he'd thought to chamber a round before taking off, as there was no way he'd be able to rack the slide with one hand. He brought the weapon up and folded the arm across his chest, before being forced to move up across his face to shield himself from falling dirt, thrown up by a round that burst closer to the trench than most.

Holding the pistol in his hand gave him a sense of security; it made him feel better about lying in a hole, waiting to die. At least he felt like he could protect himself, though what protection a 9mm pistol would give against 105mm shells, he did not know. More to the point, however, Stanford felt sure that once the artillery stopped, some sort of German or Spaniard would come running at them. In that eventuality, Stanford would be damned if he was going to lie in a trench whilst the others tried to hold the attackers back.

After playing dead for what seemed like eternity - in actuality, it was only a minute or so - Talbot cautiously looked up at the sound of running and shouting coming from the top of the hill. Before he could make out who was up there, he heard shouting from below, followed by sporadic rifle fire. Cautiously looking down the hill, he saw a number of Spanish troops firing over his head as a platoon advanced and started climbing the hill.

Removing his pack again, Talbot reached inside and pulled out an exploder; attaching the wire to the terminals, he looked down and watched as the Spaniards climbed the hill. When they had reached the position previously occupied by the squadron, he turned away, huddled as close to the ground as he could, and pushed down on the plunger. He felt a wave of heat rush over him from the feet up, quickly followed by a rain of dirt and debris.

Opening his eyes, Talbot looked back down the hill only to find himself enveloped in a cloud of dust and smoke. Gathering up the demolition equipment, he proceeded to drag himself roughly in the direction of the tunnel. Finally emerging from the smoke, he found himself about 30 yards from the tunnel, just below the crest of the hill. He spotted a figure moving about above the tunnel, whom he quickly identified as Captain Page. Crawling up to the crest, he spotted two stormtroopers climbing the hill behind Page, who was looking in the opposite direction; they were about halfway between him and the skipper.

Talbot pulled out his Thompson with his left hand and flicked it into full automatic; mustering all the strength he could, he lunged up and rushed forward, spraying the stormtroopers with .45 rounds. One man, utterly riddled, went down quickly; the second was wounded but still on his feet. Talbot, magazine empty, continued rushing at the German as the trooper tried to bring his SMG to bear on Talbot. Just before the German could get a shot lined up, Talbot was upon him; he swung at the Schmeisser with his Thompson to throw off the German's aim and plowed straight into him, taking him to the ground. He kneeled up to get in position to club the stormtrooper with the butt of the Thompson, but before he could do so the German grabbed his blouse and pulled him back down, delivering a left jab to Talbot's face in the process. The Jerry then used his weight advantage to throw Talbot to the ground and pin him down. Talbot was clearly losing this battle; as he vainly struggled to fend off the German's attacks with his good arm, he called out in desperation: "SKIPPER!"

Alix didn't like where this was going.
"Wait, but...Captain, that's crazy. The SS will overrun all of you in seconds at the rate they're coming on. We need to pull back, all of us, before it's too late!"
Page kept pulling out the rest of the demolition charges. "The train will be here any second. SS or not, this thing-"

"FUCK the train!" Alix yelled over the din, surprising herself. Page looked up, slightly stunned.
"Captain, any moron could see this was some kind of...oh, I don't know...way to play us into the Germans' hands. There's no goddamned train coming. I wouldn't be surprised to find out if there never was one! Staying behind to destroy the tunnel is the stupidest damn thing you could do!"
He sighed. "...I know."

Alix was now split between being totally confused and being utterly furious. "So why are you staying behind, again?"
"Because," he tried to explain, not really sounding convinced himself, "you may very well be right. Maybe there never was a train full of commandos heading to Gibraltar, but I'm not willing to risk it. "
He pulled out the detonation wire and affixed it to the charges, the other end attached to a plunger.
"I'm also not willing to risk any more of your lives on it."

She took a step forward. "But what if you don't get out in-"
He held up a hand, and reached into the bag, extracting one last thing - a thin folder with a few pieces of paper sticking out of it, upon which numerous arcane strings of numbers and codes were written, several underlined.
"If I don't get back," he said, holding out the folder to Alix, "This'll be all you'll need until you get back to England. These are the radio codes and frequencies you'll need in order to locate, identify yourself, and land on the Illustrious. They'll get you the rest of the way home. The rest is up to you."
Alix hesitated. "Sir, I'm not sure about this at all-"
Page grinned fatalistically. "Ah, but I am. And unfortunately, rank being what it is-"

"HURRY THE HELL UP!"
Isabelle's voice cut through the darkness and the sound of the firefight. It may have been Page's imagination, but the firing seemed to be getting louder and closer. The booming of the artillery had also now been stopped for a minute or so, he realized.
"-rank being what it is, you don't have much say in it. I'm ordering you to go. That's one of the most important parts of being an Executive Officer: being able to take over from the CO if necessary. And I'm saying that it may very well be necessary."

She now just looked rather sick. Page did his damnedest to continue sounding like he wasn't scared as hell of his own imminent mortality (which seemed fast approaching), and massively guilty all at once for doing this to her.
"Alix, I wouldn't be telling you this if I didn't know you were up to it. You'll do fine, I swear. I know it. I wouldn't have picked you otherwise."
A huge BOOM - another Panzer IV had lobbed a shell. Thought that bombardment had stopped already?
"And most importantly, you've got to move out of here, now. I'll see you on the other side in about five minutes.
A sudden moronically sentimental urge struck him. In his current state of mind, he couldn't resist. "As added proof of my confidence..."

He pulled something black and metallic from his pocket and pressed it on her in addition to the folder, Alix finally accepting it. She looked at it in her hand - it was the Webley.
"You know how much I hate being away from that thing, so take it as a testimony that I'll be back. It might get a bit scratched up in the explosion, wouldn't want to risk it getting damaged. May as well just keep it with you for now, if you don't mind."
No sense losing that too, if I'm going to die or get captured. Would be a damn shame.
She took both things, and then looked at him for just a split-second with the saddest, most mournful look he'd ever seen on her face. She knows exactly what I'm doing.
"Captain..."
Don't look in her eyes, don't look at her directly, don't even think... It was utterly hopeless. A million stupid thoughts and impulses to say much, much stupider things seized his brain, but he bit his tongue. He'd been through this before - ever since he'd seen her for the first time back at Manston a year ago. The sort of odd, hopeless torture he'd had to endure - and thought that he'd begun to move beyond and numb himself to - felt like it was being inflicted upon him anew. The fact that even covered with dirt, bruised and cut, and with her hair in straggly disarray she still looked breathtakingly beautiful was just the first cut of the knife: the fact that he genuinely considered her his friend, now, and that he was consigning her to leading everyone else in navigating back alone, and explaining what had happened, and being forced to go through the surely humiliating bullshit rigamarole that would happen once they got home...it was horrible. It wasn't fair at all.

Who knew staying behind at the likely cost of your life to finish the job you were assigned could make you feel so much like a selfish bastard?

And hell, why restrict the focus to only one person? They were all his friends (even Michael, he reluctantly admitted), which was not exactly something officers were encouraged to indulge in, especially amongst their own men. He'd already gotten at least one of them killed. More were likely to die, and he now he was cutting himself off from all the rest.

All this washed over him in an instant. He felt like his entire body, heart, mind, and soul, was getting torn apart by what he was doing. But there was no other way. He couldn't say anything. And she didn't say anything.

"...I'll get them out alive, Captain."
"Glad to hear it."
"Just make sure you come out, too."
"Of course."

Monfrox wrote:Samantha listened intently while the Captain spoke the plan. Of course, if anyone was going to stay behind, it was going to be him. Page nodded severely. He didn't feel like saying very much more right now - he was too worried that he'd somehow psych himself out, or give away how tight his throat had suddenly become.
Monfrox wrote: She left it at that for Page to decide whether she just wanted to know or if she wanted something more. "So we find Talbot and we get out. "But we need to start moving sooner than now if we're going to make it back, so maybe we should send half the squadron with Pedro and the other half to find Talbot and then catch up. Does that sound good, sir?"

Page forced words past the constriction. Another SS bullet cracked overhead.
"We don't even know if Talbot's-"

Another massive BOOM cut him off mid-sentence, the eruption of the earth sending tremors through the whole hill. It might have just been his imagination, but Page thought he could hear crumbling noises deep inside the earth - the tunnel weakening and destabilizing. The lovely thought of the whole hill collapsing into itself, dragging him with it, when that tunnel went crossed his mind. Don't really want to think about that.
He laughed to himself. "Looks like he at least planted his charges, though. Good on him."

He waved off the rest of the squadron as he placed the charges by the grate and began spooling out the wire. "Quit standing there and get fucking going, all of you! No splitting up, at the rate they're going, the SS will be on us in seconds! If you find Talbot, bring him in, but don't take any stupid risks! I'll see you in a few minutes!"

With a final, desperately angry and sad, utterly heartbreaking look, Alix led the rest of the team away at top speed back the way they came, led by a sprinting Pedro (who was clearly no longer factoring much revolutionary fervor into the fight, and was clearly out for his life). Page, fighting every instinct in his body to run with them, turned back to the demolitions work, and begun stringing the wire to a safe demolitions distance.

The Two Jerseys wrote: Gathering up the demolition equipment, he proceeded to drag himself roughly in the direction of the tunnel. Page was just about to pull the plunger when the sudden crack of rounds being fired nearly convinced him he was done for. He whipped around, seeing yet another SS man falling and another (apparently a true Man of Iron - he took at least two .45 ACP rounds to the midsection and remained upright, no small feat), who was then set upon by a dirty, dusty figure that it took Page a second to realize (not aided by the darkness) was Talbot. A hand-to-hand struggle quickly developed between the two wounded fighters, with the bigger German quickly swinging the tide his way.

At Talbot's cry, Page unsheathed his knuckle-duster knife. A gunshot at this range could easily go through the target and kill the both of them, and while Page wasn't exactly an ace at knife-fighting, he didn't need to be here. With a quick lunge, he drew and shoved the short, sharp blade into the fleshy part of the SS trooper's throat, then cutting. The dying soldier lashed out with his back legs, tripping Page up and sending him flying back, the knife still embedded in his windpipe. The German tried to stand, but wheezing and gurgling mightily, he toppled over, stone dead. Page and Talbot both lay on the ground, panting heavily.

After recovering for a second, Page crawled to his knees and extracted the knife with a nauseating shlurp sound. He turned to Talbot wearily, his voice.
"There you are Geoff. Thought...we lost you, for a second."
He gestured in a ridiculously florid manner at the detonation plunger, now sitting innocuously a few feet away.
"Care to do the honors?"

Samantha watched as Alix and Pedro hit the trail. "Time to move!" She shouted as she bolted up and ran after them. She didn't look back, for she figured that some SS troops might already be chasing them. Bullets were whizzing by everywhere, and she was having a bit of a hard time keeping up with everyone else. She thought back to some part of her history, and managed to motivate herself to run faster. Almost like a track runner; she sprinted ahead while regulating her breathing and not losing sight of their guide. "I AIN'T GOIN' BACK!" She shouted as she kept running past the others.

"There you are Geoff. Thought...we lost you, for a second."
He gestured in a ridiculously florid manner at the detonation plunger, now sitting innocuously a few feet away.
"Care to do the honors?"

"Best be careful, Skipper," Talbot said as he struggled to his feet, "A man can take a liking to blowing things up. Here, my arm's feeling a bit weak, give me a hand. Together on three."

After a three count, Page and Talbot pushed the plunger down together, setting off another massive explosion. Clouds of smoke and dust billowed from the tunnel portals and ventilation shafts, and they could hear the sound of crumbling rock, but there was no massive crater in the hill or any other obvious indication that the tunnel had collapsed.

"OK, Skipper," said Talbot as the smoke cleared, "I reckon that's the best we can do, even if it isn't collapsed they'll at least think twice about running a train through there till the engineers give it a once-over. Now let's get the hell out of..." Seeing some movement out of the corner of his eye, he stopped mid-sentence when he realized what it was: the supposedly-dead German was still alive, and he was lying ten yards away pointing a Luger at the two British officers. "LOOK OUT!" he shouted, pushing Page as hard as he could to get him out of the line of fire. Talbot saw a blinding flash light up the darkness and felt a massive blow to the right side of his chest, which sent him crumpling to the ground.

Whatever happened immediately after he was shot Talbot had no memory of, as the next thing he knew Page was looking down at him as he cradled Talbot's head and applied pressure to the wound; he could only assume that the Captain had shot the German before he could fire off another round. His trance-like state of confusion was abruptly shattered by Page's voice: "Stay with me, Geoff! You'll be all right!"

He struggled to speak: "You've got to leave me this time, Skipper. You know damn well with a chest wound I'll bleed to death before we get back to the airfield, much less the ship...I can at least take out a couple of them first, buy you some time. Hand me my pistol."

Page reached down and removed Talbot's Colt from its holster, pressing it into Talbot's left hand, whereupon Talbot flicked off the safety and cocked the hammer. Beginning to cough up blood from a collapsed lung, Talbot continued speaking: "Good luck, Skipper. You get going, I'll cover you. Just remember to do what I asked...oh, I almost forgot..."

By this point Talbot was beginning to lose consciousness, and his speech was getting soft and slurred to the point where Page could barely hear him, but he continued: "...you remember that WAAF I told you about, Eleanor? Tell her..." He passed out before he could finish: Tell her I love her.

When it finally dawned upon her that the artillery bombardment had stopped, Kaya cautiously peered over the side of the ditch where she and the others had taken refuge. Seeing that German paratroopers weren't falling out of the sky nor were Panzers plowing straight towards their position, Kaya climbed up out of the ditch to survey the damage wrought by the artillery fire. She stood there in silence for a while, staring at the burning wrecks that were once planes.

When the SS soldat returned from the dead and took a shot at Talbot, it was the last straw for Page. He didn't fly into a rage, or lose control visibly in any way as Talbot started babbling, bleeding badly from the chest. It was simply the end of any pretense for him that he would be getting out of here himself. He'd fooled himself that maybe, just maybe, they could catch up with Alix and her section of the team before they scarpered, but now, there was no physical way they could do it. The Flying Officer could barely move before he was shot in what Page guessed was somewhere in the close vicinity of the lung, but now, he was teetering on the brink. Page wasn't about to leave him behind.

So that was it. All he could do was try to deal with the inevitable as best he could. And he'd start with trying his best to save Geoff.

He handed Geoff his pistol, mostly as a sort of comfort as he tried to stanch the bleeding and apply pressure to the wound with the gauze and bandages he kept hidden in a pouch on his left pant leg. As he worked, Talbot went on dramatically, his voice getting weaker and weaker. Page tried to shush him, but he didn't seem too cognizant. He faded out soon after - Page thought he heard the word "Eleanor", but not much else was distinguishable. He could hazard a guess at what Geoff was trying to get at, though. It's silly, but it's what I'd do.

That little piece of self-introspection made him snap his head back up at the ridgeline as he tried to stop the bleeding and get some bandages on the wound. For the last few minutes, Isabelle and the last two partisans had been up there alone, and the firing seemed to have slackened off. What the hell's going on up there?

He looked behind him, back towards the Spanish side. The Spanish seemed to have utterly fled the scene - he couldn't see any of them anywhere. That entire side of the tunnel was now utterly abandoned. This was convenient, because, given where the two men were now located, if the Spanish were still there, they would theoretically be able to pour fire at will right on them. They'd be sitting ducks.

He finished getting the bandages on, and checked Talbot's breathing. It was faint, and sounded strained, but he was still drawing breath, and there was still a pulse. If he could get treatment reasonably quickly, Page ventured that he'd have a half-decent chance of pulling through. He shuddered as he realized that the only chance for treatment he was going to get was as a German prisoner. And don't forget the same goes for you, too.

The night was now deadly, almost spookily quiet. Page's nerves were screaming at him to run, to get away, but he knew there was no point. He knew what the silence meant.

And even through the darkness of the night, he could see the black-garbed SS men coming over the hill, guns drawn - dozens of them. It might have been his imagination, but he could see the red of their swastika armbands, almost like there was some kind of fiber in it that glowed in the dark. The whole scene was like something out of his deepest nightmares, the ones he'd been having ever since he'd gotten home from Spain - him, alone (save a friend who was hanging by a thread between life and death), on his knees, facing a veritable horde of Nazi elite. He could hear their jackboots stomping the dirt. There was no sign of Isabelle or the other two.

His Thompson was still slung on his back, down to what he was fairly sure was the last mag. He didn't have a pistol anymore. There was literally nothing he could do. However, it seemed that the Germans couldn't quite pick out Page and Talbot in the dark - they were sticll on the lookout, trying to find them, the barrels of their black Schmeissers betraying which way they were looking...

"Fuckin' hell I just can't seem to catch a break today." Monroe muttered, standing and shaking his head as the ringing still present in his ears slowly faded away into mainly silence, except for the crackling of the fires that had started across the airfield by way of exploding aircraft. He usually would have worried about whether or not his plane was among them, but men being dead was what plagued his mind now. "The Cap'n sure is taking his bloody time." he said, shaking his head again.

Pat had snuck back to help Page out, crawling in the bushes and he stood up and charged into the fray, firing his BAR at the SS troopers and raising the gun to begin bashing on the heads of the troopers. He took out a few SS troopers before being overwhelmed, and fell to the ground, quite heavily beaten, bruised and bleeding from the fighting.

Matthias followed the partisan, who looked frightened out of his mind, and the remnants of the squadron. He cast his eyes over what remained of the ground team, it was a sorry sight. Page had stayed back to deal with the explosives, Talbot and Arnold were nowhere to be seen and Albert had already been confirmed as dead. This was without mentioning the partisans who had been hit just as badly, if not worse. He scanned the surrounding area, partially keeping an eye out for potential threats and partially trying to spot where the squadron had landed. What he saw was not something that filled him with optimism. Some way ahead there was an orange glow, a fire. It appeared to be coming from where the airfield should be. "Fuck." He said simply, stopping dead in his tracks.

As Alix plunged on into the forest, following right on the heels of the clearly-terrified partisan, she was torn three ways: between terror (entirely justifiable, given the fix they were in), horror at what had happened and what Page had ordered her to do, and black fury at Page for - for lack of a better way to say it -dumping all of this on her. A few days ago, she'd still been reeling at the thought being the Executive Officer, trying to find her way through her new responsibilities. Now, in all likelihood, she was the closest thing the remnants of Excalibur had to a leader. The thought terrified her to her core, more than she could even wrap her head around.
Now, it was all on her to pull the squadron back together and get back home somehow, in the dark of night, in the teeth of an SS ambush and presumably Spanish reprisals as well.
Assuming any of the Blue and Gold flights are still alive. They could've gotten trapped just like we did. Maybe they didn't make it out at all?
But surely they couldn't all be dead?

She couldn't say for sure, anymore. It was hard to imagine men like Silva and Bray dead under any circumstance, but things had gone so wrong, so fast...it was like some horrific nightmare. All their luck seemed to have evaporated right at the time when they needed it most.

As they ran, they flew through their entry path in seconds instead of minutes. No longer concerned with stealth, they ran like bats out of hell, with no consideration for subtlety anymore. The only goal was escape - as quick as possible.

Alix turned to take a look at the squadron behind her, trying to verify if they were keeping up. The only people she could see were Samantha and Matthias - Page and Talbot were gone, Albert was dead...where was Pat? Oh God, that's all we need -another one to go missing.
As she kept running, her lungs burning and legs hurting, she tried to think out what to do. Was Pat hit back at the hill? Did he even make it to come with us? Is there any point to waiting at all? Should we just assume he'll be right behind us?
Fuck, I don't know!

What seemed like only a few moments later, Alix began to recognize the sloping land they were sprinting across as close to where they had emerged. A steady ochre glow began to hove into visibility from a long way off through the trees. Alix, heart sinking even further, knew it could only have been the airfield.

Without a word, as soon as the buildings of the airfield began to come into solid view, Pedro peeled off and dashed back through the trees, heading east, with nary even a glance back. As Alix stopped to catch her breath and see what she could see of the mesa from the trees, only a rustle gave Pedro's departure away.
"...Thanks," she pointlessly choked out as she realized he was long gone. "Sorry we...got so many...of your friends killed today."

All Alix could do was nod - she was in no mood to disagree.
"Anyone see Pat anywhere? did he come with us?"

Page's nerves were screaming and his mouth was dry as the band of SS stormtroopers kept up the search. They were so damned close, his fevered brain began to play tricks on him- he felt like he could almost reach out and touch them. They would surely be discovered any second -

A sudden burst of oddly familiar-sounding gunfire echoed out of the trees. His hopes momentarily and idiotically soaring at the prospect of some kind of improbable, last-second rescue, Page quickly realized that something was wrong - That...sounds like Pat's BAR! But ...oh, that fucker. That utter fucker. He came back. I explicitly told them NOT to! He'll get himself killed!

True to form, Pat then proceeded to make a crazy charge at the SS, the BAR illuminating him in the dark. He managed to hit at least a handful of the SS men, but he was quickly winged (or hit full-on, it was hard to tell) by German counterfire. Then, the SS men were all over him. Page felt like he wanted to cry, ether in rage or sadness, he wasn't sure.
You utterly magnificent moron, Pat. Why did you do that? You had to know it was hopeless...

A sudden yell was audible across the hillside as Pat was hauled away by the SS soldiers.
"ENOUGH!"
Page squinted in the direction the (English) word had come from. The SS troopers, without a word, split down the middle, making a path of a ramrod-straight figure. Page couldn't see his face. He walked with a slow, deliberate gait, the impatience in his voice subverted by his pace. He was clearly taking his time. He stopped at the crest of the hill, some dozen meters away from Page, silhouetted against the lightening sky.

"I TIRE OF THIS GAME, EXCALIBUR! I KNOW YOU'RE OUT THERE! YOU FOUGHT WELL TODAY, BUT IT SEEMS YOUR LUCK OF THE DEVIL HAS COME TO AN END TONIGHT! SURRENDER YOURSELVES, IMMEDIATELY! YOU ARE OUTNUMBERED AND HOPELESSLY OUTGUNNED!"
Page bit his tongue. He knew he had no chance, but he just couldn't bring himself to say anything just yet. There had to be some way out...something he hadn't thought of, something he hadn't seen...
But he was distracted by something in the back of his perceptions. That voice...it was oddly familiar...but it couldn't be...

Suddenly, many pieces fell into place as Page realized who he was up against, and what had happened. None of it seemed possible, but moving past that little roadblock, the mystery of what had happened - how Excalibur had been lured out here on this dead-end quest - became much more clear. They had been going up against the one man on the other side who knew more about themt han anyone else in the enitre Axis.

Somehow, that Von Sporrenberg bastard was behind this. He'd broken the chains, escaped England somehow, and managed to get in good with the elite back in Berlin again, to the point where he could set up a massive sting operation to lure Excalibur into an unwinnable fight, and then destroy them. the exact mechanisms of the plan were still in question, but the overall goal was now clear as day to Page.

Konrad waited a few minutes in silence. Then, another yell.
"I KNEW YOU WOULD REMAIN SILENT. FORTUNATELY, I HAVE OTHER WAYS OF CONVINCING WHAT'S LEFT OF YOU TO COME QUIETLY!"
A series of shouted German commands followed. A pair of SS troopers emerged from behind the hill, dragging along with them a writhing figure, clearly trying to escape their grasp. One of the SS guards planted a knee in their back, and the figure was forced down onto their knees, directly before Konrad. A torch shone out from one of the guards' hands, revealing the wild, dirty, angry face of Isabelle. Page could see it, lit up like the moon, even all this distance away.

His gorge rising from the nausea overtaking him, he knew what was coming. Konrad, still taking his time, drew a Luger from his holster and held it to her head.
"IF YOU DO NOT SURRENDER YOURSELVES WITHIN TEN SECONDS, YOUR FRIEND HERE WILL DIE. IT'S YOUR CHOICE TO MAKE. SURRENDER, AND SHE WILL BE SPARED."
What the fuck do I do?
"AND IF SHE DIES - ON YOUR HEAD BE IT."

dietrich coaxed his badly damaged BF-109 unto the runway in france. he felt proud and relieved that he finally got his revenge on his rival.
he thought of his woman in paris, Isabel. her lovely features and her soft voice captured his mind ever since they met.

as dietrich killed the engine, some ground crew ran out to see if he was alright, his craft was leaking oil and the engine was smoking profusely at this moment.

"sir! are you alright?"
the chief mechanic asked.

dietrich nodded and walked off the tarmac alone.

I wonder what herr Von Sporrenberg will say. after all, I did manage to shoot him down and he did bail out. might prove useful.

Silva poked his head out of the ditch as the resounding explosions of impacting shells diminished, as did the horrifying whine of inbound artillery. He cocked an ear, making damn sure there was nothing that even resembled a shell coming to pound the hell out of the Mesa.

Assured, he clambered out and looked around. Several Spitfires were a burning mess. To Silva's horror, his own was among them. The runway itself was pitted and torn, and Silva doubted he would have been able to take off even if his bird wasn't currently resembling a Marshmallow roast gone wrong.

Now understandably peeved, he looked around until he spotted the small arms canister that had been left behind. He jogged over, and reverently removed a Thompson and all the clips contained within.

"God damned Nazi pukes" He muttered as he slammed a magazine home and pulled back the charging handle. At the same time he saw what looked suspiciously like a group of people running toward the airfield. He hurled himself back into the ditch, and called out.

Samantha was almost beating into the ground with her boots as she tried to get more speed. She almost fell, but stumbled enough to catch her balance. "How close are we to getting out of here?" She asked Alix. "I don't think I can keep running.....like this anymore...." She was started to get fatigued, and the sooner they got to the airfield the better, or else she feared she'd start to fall behind.

IF ONE OF YOU DOESN'T START SPEAKING ENGLISH REAL SOON, I WILL BLOW YOUR NAZI ASSES TO KINGDOM FUCKING COME!

"Oh Christ, here they come"

Stanford thought. The artillery had stopped now, that God, but it was as he feared. The Germans were assaulting the Mesa. Stanford's mind was racing as he lay in the ditch. The others must be dead or captured and surely it was now their turn. God alone only knows what the Germans would do with them, if they were taken alive. Still, Stanford wasn't going to go down without a fight.

Slowly but surely, he began to pull himself to his feet. The process was difficult and excruciatingly painful, but once on his feet Stanford felt better. The wounds he'd sustained were still agony, mind, but he felt he could now do something to help his comrades. His vision was somewhat burred and each movement seemed to be happening in slow motion but, somehow, Douglas managed to raise the 9mm pistol that he had retained in his right hand. He pointed the business end in the general direction of the enemy and waited for something to happen. Thought it wasn't readily obvious to him; everyone else could almost certainly see that the barrel of the FN built weapon was shaking like a leaf.

Alix sighed with some relief, even if some sarcasm crept into her voice too. She slowly and deliberately walked out of the forest, Matthias and Samantha behind her.
"Silva! For god's sake, don't shoot, we're friendly. We need to get the...oh God, they did hit the airfield, didn't they? Is...how many Spitfires do we have left? Is the runway usable?"

Time seemed to hang. Bent on his knees over Talbot's dying body, seeing Isabelle held at gunpoint, his mind totally blank, the environs totally silent, Page felt like the world had frozen. It was like some kind of bad dream...only he couldn't wake up anymore. He could see Isabelle's face caught in the torchlight - her nose was bleeding, and she looked tired, defeated, almost resigned to her fate. As the ten seconds counted down, a lone thought crept in. In better times, he might have considered it further. But the pressure and stress of this hellish day and his current situation had swept most of his rationality aside:

They still can't see me...must be all these bushes, or their eyes just aren't adapted to the light yet. they don't know how many of us there are. Maybe...I can bluff them?

It seemed as good an option as any - at worst, it would come to the same thing, right? They wouldn't risk executing a hostage?

Screwing up the last vestiges of his courage, Page yelled out to them, his voice betraying a surprising hoarseness and frailty.
"It's not that simple, Jerry. We've got some of our own guns on your boys. and we'll let you retreat. If you don't, I can't...I can't vouch for your safety."

For a few seconds, there was no response - dead silence again. The wind began to kick up, bending the trees and foliage into sinewy contortions, making the whole edge of Page's vision swim with their motions. It felt almost like a hallucination.
Then, to Page's horror, Konrad began laughing. It began as just a suppressed chuckle, that then grew into a full-fledged belly laugh.
"I'll give you this, Page, you don't know when to quit. And that's not a compliment."

The gaiety in his voice quickly turned into something darker, more intense...something uglier and full of rage.
"You think you can try to talk me, or bluff me, into letting you go? Let me tell you something, Captain: even if you had some sort of leverage on me - and I know you don't - nothing on this Earth could stop me from coming after you, at any cost. You and your band of rabid dogs scarred me in Paris, and you humiliated me in England - you cost me dozens of my best men, a good deal of my reputation, nearly the use of my hand, and months of time as I found my way back to Germany. And you think you can convince me to let you go?"

He paused, lighting a cigarette with his free hand as he did so, the guard next to him furnishing the light. He took a long drag. Page could see the smoke blown off by the wind, the point glowing in the dark like the eye of a demon.

"Let me demonstrate exactly what I think of your offer, Captain."
He removed his cigarette, a predatory smile crossing his face.

BANG

Looking back on the incident, as he would constantly and compulsively for months and years to come, Page found he couldn't remember (even despite Konrad's gloating asssurances that he had) screaming "NO!" at the literal top of his lungs, sundering his voice for days as Isabelle's body slumped over, the single 9mm Parabellum round from Konrad's Luger going through her left temple and exiting through her right having killed her instantly. He didn't remember standing up, Thompson in hand, pulling the trigger at the horde of SS men around him, nor that the gun clicked uselessly, having long since run out of ammo. He didn't remember the SS troopers swarming all over him, knocking him to the ground, their yells and orders not penetrating his mind.

All he could remember was the shadow of the SS boot that came down on his forehead, and Konrad's voice, somehow conversational and smugly casual amidst the (presumable) roar of noise.
"On your head be it, Captain."

Samantha all but stumbled out onto the tarmac. She hadn't run that fast since she was little, and she'd never had to run that far in her life. She dropped onto her knees and sucked in the air over and over. She was trying to steady her breathing pattern, but she was hyperventilating, and soon, she fell back onto the ground and passed out from the overall exhaustion of the escape.

"Son of a..." Silva grumbled as Samantha collapsed. He then promptly ignored her. His minimal medical training pretty much extended to how to patch a bullet hole until you made it home. And that was the entirety of it.

He looked around.

"Where's the Captain?" He asked, suddenly concerned. A group of Nazis charging an airfield, that he could handle. But leaving a men behind stung his sensibilities.

"To yer feet mate, c'mon, we've gotta move our asses as fast as we bloody can." Monroe muttered to Stanford with a pat on the shoulder, pulling him up and to his feet, the Irishman supporting his wounded comrade. "That's a good question, where is tha cap'n? And for that matter, Pat 'n Talbot?" Monroe couldn't help but add to Silva's inquiry.

Matthias quickly scanned his eye's over Samantha, trying to work out what was wrong with her. It didn't look like an injury, probably just exhaustion or something similar. "She'll be fine." He told them confidently, although he couldn't be entirely sure. "We were ambushed and Page ordered us to get back here while he triggered the explosion. We think that the other two may have been hit during the firefight or just stayed with Page." He spoke fast, knowing they had to hurry. "We need to get the injured into whatever plane isn't on fire, ideally the Fulmar. Some of us will just have to chance it in the wilderness."

Silva looked around warily.

"I'll head for the border to Portugal on foot. Might stop and collect Page on the way." He winked.

"I speak Spanish so I'll be fine, still have some friends from my days here during the Revolution. Old die hands who won't quit. You guys get your asses in the air and make for England. Alix, you're in charge it looks like." He nodded briefly to all of them, then hesitated as he took out a blank piece of paper and a pen that he'd kept in his flight suit. Silva quickly scribbled down a note, then signed it. He handed it to Alix.

"I'm citing Polanski for conspicuous gallantry in air combat. Make sure that gets to the brass, and try to get them to give him something." What went unspoken was the knowledge Silva would only recommend one of his subordinates via a note if he wasn't betting on making it back.

He nodded once more. "If that's all, I should try to get a head start."
