Should the Doctor on Doctor Who be female?

Postby The Romulan Republic » Mon Jun 03, 2013 6:09 pm

There has been a lot of talk about the possibility of the Doctor becoming a woman when he regenerates. This is possible for Time Lords, but the idea is controversial. However, change is a major part of Doctor Who (they've replaced the main star ten times).

I know there's already a Doctor Who thread but I wanted to make a poll.

Here's a link to the discussion about this in the main Doctor Who thread:

viewtopic.php?f=19&t=31936&start=9775
"Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes" When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy." - President Abraham Lincoln.

No, I think die hard older fans (Classic Whovians) would be upset. However in the episode The Doctor Daughter with David Tennant. The actress who played the character of the Doctors daughter was actually Peter Davidson daughter in real life! So this could be a sub story & developed into the current story line that would appeal to having a female Doctor yet stay true to the story.

Ah yes, Jenny.

I'd love if it she returned, and it might be good if she stared in a spin off.

Though when people talk about a Doctor Who spin-off, they seem to usually be talking about a Vastra, Strax, and other Jenny spin-off.

Joanna Lumley was perfectly nice as the Doctor, and Judi Dench was considered by RTD as the Ninth. Sometimes I wonder about what a Karen Gillian Doctor would be like - she'd finally be ginger!

Nah! I'm a woman and I'd prefer him to stay male, it's like James Bond, don't mess with a good formula...just keep his female sidekicks intelligent and sassy and it'll balance out.

Would like to see a dark skinned doctor though. :(

No, I think it'd be too big a change to the character and the show's dynamic.

In the 1999 spin off the doctor becomes a woman...
I didn't like it.
(I'm not anti-feminist or anything like that, just believe a funny/silly male doctor is more appealing to the young/adolescent) :)

i think they should do something groundbreaking and have the doctor be someone who isn't an obnoxious, insufferable, embarrassingly bad character who can wave his shitty stick at every solution and come up with a solution.

or just cancel it.

They've already established that it happens to Time Lords, so at this point they almost kind of have to. As with all things (including the next Doctor being a dude) it would depend on execution. I wouldn't want to sit through two seasons of "haha, I have boobs now" jokes, but otherwise, sure, go for it.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

He's officially not meant to, according to the Classic Era. But with the episode where the TARDIS turned into a women, he does mention a Time Lord who turned into a Woman.

I think it could be interesting to see a Woman play the Doctor so I'm welcome to it...for the sake of changing it up a bit.

Why do you want to change a formula that works perfectly?

I fail to see how making the Doctor female would "change [the] formula."

You could say the same about killing off your leading actor every few seasons no matter how popular they are. And yet Dr. Who manages.

In most cases a character is either male or female and short of a remake there's no way to change that without wrecking continuity.

However, Doctor Who is an unusual case because of the Time Lords' ability to regenerate and the fact that it has been established the Time Lords can change their gender during regeneration. And they don't always have much control over regeneration.

Hence why this is a serious question.
