Background
The C96 was originally designed and produced in Germany by Mauser, but Fink Mfg. in Columbia picked up on the design. It was realized to be a cheap, accurate sidearm for the Police and Flying Squads. During the schism of Columbia from the United States in 1900 it was used by Columbian forces to defeat the Chinese Boxer Rebels. Currently in the year of 1912 it is being used to great effect against the anarchist Vox Populi. A popular variant is the version chambered in .45 ACP, which offers much greater firepower. Extended magazines, rifle stocks, and barrel extensions convert this pistol into a powerful rifle suited for combat in the winding alleys of Columbia.

Tantal folders are relatively solid. No way you're going to break a wire-folder on an AK. Cheek weld is non-existent, however, so they aren't the most comfortable nor accurate stock to use, but it's in no way "flimsy."

But why would anyone want an out of balance gun that is uncomfortable, and inherently in accurate. In Iraq and Afghanistan for example plenty of shooting at each other from can't-really-see distances happened. Its not gonna help in that department. Why would anyone would sacrifice a good stock to save a single pound of weight?

Because when you're carrying 60+lbs in desert temperatures every little helps.

It might actually be possible to convert the tubular magazine into a gas tube, possibly even containing a piston, which would then unlock and cycle the bolt.
It would then only require modification to affix a box magazine below the magazine, some bolt changes and a 'bolt shield' (the large protrusion behind the bolt in the top image I provided).
(for reference, the rifle you have used above in the image appears to be a Kropatschek rifle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kropatschek)
