Kalumba wrote:I have a few issues with your app. First the existance of America, I dont think that real world nations exist within Aurora but you will have to ask the others. Also the idea of you raiding weak nations for slaves; I believe that Norvenia is very high on human rights and would not allow that to occur and you would be under serious sanctions from most of the other nations. Finally the nuclear war, I am not sure if the region is ready for such a cataclysmic event to have happened, but again you will have to ask the others.
But I think you are an excellent RPer and would love to have you in Aurora, as I am sure the others would, so I am confident we can work something out.

I believe i did not put much efforts into the application, but just spamming it on this thread would even lower my chances of being accepted. I understand your decision as i have not provided much information and rushed alot, but i only want so you atleast look at my real RPing abilities, and think this over in the next month.

Nation's Form of Government/Ideology: Single party state, maintains opposition parties and a national congress for comedic relief - something known by its members much to their frustrations.
National Leader(s): Nadezhda Volkova
Brief Description of Nation's Culture(s): A very hard working people, they will prefer completion of any task regardless of challenges faced. A troubled history makes the general population lean towards the cold side of decision making, and a widespread apathy towards the totalitarian government is presence largely due to its limited interference in their daily lives.
Brief Description of Nation's Religion(s): Largely state-enforced atheist, in their private lives a sizable number citizens are followers of Islam. Enclaves of other religions are present.
Rough Climate/Topography of Nation (to help determine where on the map you might want to be): Temperate climate, many large forests and a small mountain range in the South. The north of the country is flatter, largely consisting of plains with rolling hills. A small coast is home to a number of former tourist sites and many steel/logging industry based facilities.
Additional Description of Nation (economics, recent history, major characters, special quicks, etc.): VSR's economy is primarily based around the export of raw materials and certain manufactured goods such as heavy machinery, pharmaceutical/medical technology. The 'state' industry, owned by the Premier while having little presence in politics has a major behind-the-scenes presence, while publicly competing with private industries.
The nation existed as a small, quiet nation for most of its existence, up until the 1970s when the political system took a swing towards Soviet-styled government. While it had rapidly advanced the nation forwards, it was believed by many to have stripped the people of many rights they had had, and by the late 80s a popular resistance had formed. The movement was cracked down upon, and by 1990 had boiled into a civil war that lasted until 1994, resulting in peace talks between parties. For several months, negotiations took place to no avail, when a 'moderate' party; self titled the 'Independent Party' had taken power and shut down negotiations. A new offensive had began which lasted for several weeks - the opposition had taken severe losses to manpower and lost much of 'gained' territory, and was forced to sign a ceasefire which while ending the conflict, had been perceived to take measures to punish an economically damaged region, and political leaders 'responsible' had been arrested and given lengthy sentences. Disappearances or others had occurred, and many had looked to seek refuge in other nations. This was not limited to the opposition - aging Soviet era politicians had met ends at suspicious circumstances or were simply told to leave. The leader from 1994-2010, a 'President' Tereshenko had ruled the nation for his years with a primary focus of rebuilding and restoring economic strength - security was not a chief priority for much of his term. While generally seen in a positive light, there were still feelings of resentment to his rule which became apparent late in his term. A rekindled revolutionary movement - suspected of external funding and leadership soon became a thorn in his side and security services were to be updated to modern standards. When he stepped down, the self-titled 'Premier' had started putting policies set by her predecessor in motion, and was very vocal at her first national address that Tereshenkos policies would be fast tracked to restore the nations previous strength. In contrast, she would create policies of her own - many of which backtracked on political freedoms to such an extent that even registering for any party was simply just decoration for identification papers. The large, state run research institutes would be given full freedom to conduct research with minimal oversight, while overtly encouraged to compete even if they were working on the same thing. With the new policies in action, much of the nation had regained solid employment at such a pace that the economy rapidly stagnated without an increased involvement of foreign economies - something stated for accomplishment via the next '3 year plan'
The Premier is a daily figure in the peoples lives, having replaced the previous leader had began to try a more personal approach - regular interviews on state and opposition television, instating frequent national surveys(of which have little use outside of her own amusement. Having a wide spectrum of personal interests, she does try to get involved in a many things as she can, either directly or to just observe.
Roleplaying Example [Note: this is VERY IMPORTANT. A sample must be at least 3 paragraphs, well-written, with proper spelling and grammar. The more samples, the better. If you have written nothing that matches these criteria, please write a new sample here that does.]: http://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=209488 <- most recent on this account, older ones exist on another nation
Notes [Questions, comments, requests, etc.]: character RPs are more my thing, so the nation is intended to be an odd, backwards place with little sense of set direction - it makes sense as one is acquainted with the actual characters.

Estovnia wrote:Nation Name: High Kingdom of Estovnia (Alokir Junsegolt se Bronsekaan/Hár Konungsríkið Estola)
Nation's Form of Government/Ideology: Feudal Monarchy (Matrilineal Succession)
National Leader(s): High Queen Kaia Thonronr IV
Brief Description of Nation's Culture(s): The current culture of Estovnia evolved from the raider-esque culture of the ancient Nords, though many similarities still exist. The current political status of Estovnia often feeds into the ancient Nordic culture.
Brief Description of Nation's Religion(s): The major religion in Estovnia is "Gamleiðir," literally translating to "Old Ways," a polytheistic, shamanistic religion that is a blend of the native religion with the traditional Nord religion brought by the Nords. The basis of the religion revolves around the worship of the Trinity (þrenning): Lasska, God of war, might, and power; Thales, goddess of the harvest, fertility, and women; Fjolfrin, God of healing, strength, and the protection of mankind. Aside from this trinity, there are several lesser gods and goddesses, ranging from Runar (God of lakes, rivers, etc.) to Hjotra (Goddess of messengers, lightning, and speed). A plethora of magical creatures, like dwarves, faeries, and elves, are also thought to exist, as are spirits of natures (dubbed spriggans).
Rituals of the Old Ways are often intricate and complicated due to the amount of divine beings that exist and are worshiped. One thing that all rituals share in common is ritualistic sacrifice. Often times animals, such as goats or chickens, are sacrificed in order to lift a curse or hex that spriggans, dwarves, faeries, or elves may have placed on a settlement. Ritualistic sacrifices are also common in order to give thanks or appease a god or goddess. Unlike with other religions, human sacrifice is not discouraged, and surprisingly, is quite common throughout the realms. Perhaps even more surprisingly, these human sacrifices are volunteers, often from noble houses. The collective mindset of the Nord people is that it is considered a great honor to be sacrificed in honor of the gods, as they believe it will lead them straight into the sacred halls of Arsal.
Rough Climate/Topography of Nation: The majority of the country is made up of flat plains/steppes, with taiga and mountains more inland.
Additional Description of Nation: When one steps into the nation, it is best often described as "stepping back in time." The political situation within Estovnia has caused a sort of "stagnation" in social, cultural, and political times, which have often (if one were to use real life equivalencies) been compared to 18th and 19th century Eastern Europe. Democracy is only starting in its infancy with the recently created "Moot," comparable to a senate of sorts, in which the ruling jarl from each of the 18 jarldoms meet once every season to discuss any sort of problems with the nation.
Outside of the jarldoms, a number of local warlords rule the border areas, often raiding the neighboring countries in similar way to viking raids during the 9th, 10th, and 11th centuries. This, coupled with the nation's overall backwards way of thinking have put it on edge and have made relations with other countries cool, at best.

I'm not in a position to jump the gun prematurely here, but how would such a country survive amidst modern, industrialized nations? I mean, if they're still in an 18th-century frame of mind, how do they resist international pressure?

Believe it or not, I actually did do research regarding this type of setting
As for the military, if you remember Edom's "Third Elwe War" the weaponry, tactics, etc. will be more or less the same.
Also, if wasn't quite obvious, this nation isn't exactly meant to emulate real world realism, but rather to add an interesting twist and feel to the roleplaying atmosphere that Aurora has conjured up in the passed months.
