If it's in the front of the fighting compartment, it's not a mid-mounted engine, it's a front-mounted engine. A partial hybrid diesel-electric system is doable, but probably won't provide the benefits you think. A full hybrid is impractical. And front-mounted engines have their share of drawbacks, although ultimately it comes down to which characteristics you favor.

The gun will stick out less over the front of the tank, potentially making it easier to maneuver in tight spaces.

Basically, priorities are as follows:

Strategic Mobility
Firepower
Armor
Tactical Mobility
Cost

Trying to make a tank that has excellent protection for the crew, but has as big a cannon on as small and easily transported a chassis as possible.
Ergo, why I decided to look at a rear turret. If it turns out that it's not feasible, I'll look at more conventional layouts. :P

Kalmarium, I think it needs a larger drive sprocket, unless that's the idler... and still then. Specifications seem realistic if ordinary.

No, I just liked the name. But I can see why you'd ask that. I based off of the M1A2 Abrams and Leopard 2A6 designs and equipment. Although a name change would be likely considering how we favor modern blitzkrieg tactics, while the definition of Sentinel fits to nothing of the sort.

I never liked that design, too high profile, troops hitching a ride were completely exposed, and if you were shot in the rear you basically lost the tank.

Another thing that bugs me about the AAT (apart from the flaws mentioned already) is the fact it needs a crew of droids to work . Couldn't the Trade Feds just design a tank with its own onboard autonomous AI to operate it? Would probably operate *a bit better* than the crew of apparently retarded battle droids... although it won't remove the vehicle's other design flaws.

HEAT protection seems a bit light in comparison to APFSDS protection. CE protection is generally pretty easy to improve relative to KE protection. Modern western tanks can get nearly double your RHAe vs. CE values.

Needs a lot more ground clearance. Your drive sprocket should probably be as big or bigger than your road wheels.

If you mean 'MBT' as in a modern tank, then there's no point in a mid-mounted engine, since that means you have a needlessly long drive shaft to either the front or rear drive sprockets, and a big honking engine right in the middle of your fighting compartment where it will be more difficult to access for maintenance.

Okay, I can understand the point about the drive shaft, but are diesel-electric systems still too underdeveloped for MBT use?

Also, the engine is in front of the fighting compartment, but behind the driver's compartment. Despite being clear of both areas, the turret would most definitely have to be turned 90 degrees to open the engine access panels.

Forza's designed a diesel-electric drive. I supposedly have one, though not "designed" as such. They're not 'underdeveloped' at all, it should be extraordinarily simple to port the concept from trains to tanks.

The Taurus has no gun depression and will struggle to engage targets over the front ~270 degrees or so.
It will also have no capability to climb obstacles and will struggle to cross trenches, losing most of the mobility being a tracked armoured vehicle grants you.

Kalmarium wrote:What are the advantages of a rear-mounted turret?

The ability to mount a larger gun with the same amount of front overhang.

Balancing out the normally front-heavy tank to allow for more stable cross-country performance.

Minor things like that. And I don understand that there ARE disadvantages, as with any design. But I thought it might be interesting to look at.

I'd have thought tanks were relatively decently balanced, in being 60t, with a two-and-a-bit ton gun barrel over the front, a whacking great turret assembly centre and whacking great engine rearward. Combined with the armour concentration focused forward and reduced rearward, it should be close to 50/50 balance. Anything else would probably impede mobility.

HEAT protection seems a bit light in comparison to APFSDS protection. CE protection is generally pretty easy to improve relative to KE protection. Modern western tanks can get nearly double your RHAe vs. CE values.

So what's a good point to raise it too?

Oh yes!, Armored assault tank time!

This big guy has a rather long reload time on the missiles, fair reload time on the turret. Plus, it's big!

The larger the tank the larger the target.

That thing would get brutally raped by any proper FT hovertank.
