Also, the engine is in front of the fighting compartment, but behind the driver's compartment. Despite being clear of both areas, the turret would most definitely have to be turned 90 degrees to open the engine access panels.
If it's in the front of the fighting compartment, it's not a mid-mounted engine, it's a front-mounted engine. A partial hybrid diesel-electric system is doable, but probably won't provide the benefits you think. A full hybrid is impractical. And front-mounted engines have their share of drawbacks, although ultimately it comes down to which characteristics you favor.Kalmarium wrote:What are the advantages of a rear-mounted turret?
The gun will stick out less over the front of the tank, potentially making it easier to maneuver in tight spaces.

If you mean 'MBT' as in a modern tank, then there's no point in a mid-mounted engine, since that means you have a needlessly long drive shaft to either the front or rear drive sprockets, and a big honking engine right in the middle of your fighting compartment where it will be more difficult to access for maintenance.
Okay, I can understand the point about the drive shaft, but are diesel-electric systems still too underdeveloped for MBT use?

The ability to mount a larger gun with the same amount of front overhang.
Balancing out the normally front-heavy tank to allow for more stable cross-country performance.
Minor things like that. And I don understand that there ARE disadvantages, as with any design. But I thought it might be interesting to look at.

The larger the tank the larger the target.
That thing would get brutally raped by any proper FT hovertank.
