Maybe the Chinese should sell arms to Texas or Alaska peeps who want independence from the United States.

Its a bit different, considering the Taiwanese have de facto, and to an extent de jure independence from the Mainland.

Personally, I consider the PRC to be nothing but a joke on the international stage.
Their economy is heavily dependent on the (failing) American market, which, as stated in this thread, purchases its inferior goods and sets the value of its currency, which really has no market value anyway, considering it's not only dependent on the American dollar to assess its worth, but also is kept artificially weak by the Chinese government. Even their military is subpar, with their expenditures only pegged at $20 billion more than France and the UK, and greatly dwarfed by the budget in the USA (by over $500 billion).
IMO, at the rapid rate of industrialization they are experiencing, their economy is modernizing and expanding far too fast for its own good. If the bubble were to ever burst, it would be wreck the entire country, far more devastatingly than any economic collapse in a more stable and established global power (and considering the recent instability in the global market, that isn't too radical of an assumption).
And, let's face it, for a supposedly "atheist" country, the government of the PRC has immensely backward social policies and attitudes. Not to mention ruinous environmental policies that will take their toll on the country in only a matter of time.
Essentially, I see the PRC as a self destructive and unstable construct that is rapidly moving towards its own demise.

Now India having very decent prospects for economic growth and strength in the next two decades, that's another story...

Also don't overestimate the cohesion of the United States, esp. in the south, when the population make-up is changing so rapidly. Even without doing anything, in 30 years Southern United States is going to be very pro-Mexico.

They could certainly limit our ability to influence overseas events drastically if it's clear we're not going to pay up. They could easily obstruct us by causing our credit rating to go down and simply use their influence to counter ours, especially in places like Africa.

You are clearly not aware of the natural resources sitting in Africa, which the Chinese could block our access to, given their positive relations with many African nations.

Yeah, China's not going to go to war with a massive trading partner who has nuclear weapons over this. They'll act all upset about it, and then like you said, it will blow over.

I don't know about giving Taiwan weapons, but I'm completely behind attacks on their censorship.
