James Walther was born to German gunmakers in Berlin. He was taught how to shoot at the age of 12, and won 5 shooting contests by the time he was 18. He went to the University of Berlin to learn history and political science. After that, he studied law and moved to the United States as a lawyer. However, after two disastrous careers, he became a gunmaker and made the gun shop Walther's Guns. He imported tonnes of gunpowder when the plague hit. They were still there when he came back.
James Walther was able to escape the plague by simply hiding in the mountains. This made him a specialist in surviving, and he joined the convoy as a guard to help convoys rise and take over what was rightfully theirs.

After graduated from the University with decent scores, he was introduced at the age of 23 to the underworld of Triads, where he learned many of his current skills, including an average skills in shooting and in driving. After 8 years in Hong Kong, he was transferred to Chinatown to helped his triad uncle who used the antique shop he had as the front for money laundering. His role as the enforcer and bodyguard also affected his ability in hand-to-hand, intimidation, and marksmanship.

However, when the infections reached New York, Steven grabbed all of the supplies he could got, alongside the weapons after his uncle was killed in the midst of the infections. After a long journey to found a safe place, finally he reached the convoy and decided to joined them.
