Regulars lose second game of qualifiers, win next two games
Drop game against Rodard, take down Karditan and Powersith
The Regulars managed to help solidify their place as one of the top teams in the group over the last three games, two of which came on the road, where the Regulars have been unremarkable, going 1-2 while finishing the first half of qualifiers with a 4-0 record at home.
Rodard 6 - 3 Allamunnic States (Overtime)
The Regulars road woes continued as they dropped a 6-3 overtime game against Rodard, with one play ultimately costing them the game. The game was 0-0 late in the fourth quarter when Leif Erikson dropped back and suffered a strip-sack, injuring his shoulder in the process. The change in possession allowed Rodard to run out the clock. With John Painter taking over on the Regulars' overtime possession, the team failed to move the ball much, and were eventually forced to settle for Justin Connors' 19-yard field goal. What followed was a defensive lapse by Belle Marquette (who caught an interception earlier in the game) was knocked down and gave up a 14-yard touchdown pass that ended the game with the Regulars' defeat.
Before his injury, Leif Erikson went 9/16 for 129 yards. He suffered a minor shoulder injury, which was cured in time for him to play in the game against Powersith. Painter's relief effort was lackluster, as he went 3/8 for 26 yards. Meanwhile, Danyl Wyndhorst rushed 14 times for 53 yards, adding onto Haanryk Stahlburg's 6 rushes for 27 yards, Ryan Myers' 4 rushes for 29 yards, and Ole Nurdsunn's 7 rushes for 38 yards. The defense tallied eight sacks, as well as notching an interception (by Belle Marquette in the first quarter). Honorius Waalturs boosted his sack tally to ten by notching three of those sacks.
After the loss, there was widespread speculation about how the Regulars have now lost two games out of seven, both of them the types of close games that the Regulars have previously been good at winning. Perhaps the most-widely blamed factor has been the loss of depth along the offensive line. Because of the Regulars' reliance on a power-rushing attack, the offense is at its best when offensive linemen can be frequently rotated to keep the entire line fresher. With the loss of a large number of offensive linemen this past off-season, the line has been slow to rebuild its depth, and the linemen have entered the critical late stages of games exhausted and not playing at their best.
Whatever the cause, though, it is clear that with several more road games ahead on the slate, the Regulars need to play better away from Federal Steel Field. "We're not going to escape qualifiers if we don't start playing better on the road," head coach Ryan Smart said. "We have one more game at home in this half of qualifiers, and another on the road, and then we get some of our toughest games in the next half on the road. We cannot play like this when we're visiting Karditan and West Angola, or they'll chew us up and spit us out."
Allamunnic States 7 - 0 Karditan
The Regulars managed to come back and maintain their perfect home-record, at least, against the Ironworkers of host-nation Karditan. Of course, for much of the game, entering the fourth quarter, it looked like the Regulars had gotten themselves in another close struggle that they might not win. John Painter ended up being efficient in his first start of the year, filling in for the injured Leif Erikson as a precaution. He ended up going 12/13 for 138 yards, but it very nearly was not enough.
But that was when Danyl Wyndhorst happened, as he busted up the middle, breaking four tackles and galloping 54 yards to the endzone to put the Regulars up 7-0 after Justin Connors' PAT. Wyndhorst would finish the day with 16 rushes for 117 yards and a touchdown. The other running backs would make contributions, as well, with Ryan Myers rushing 7 times for 29 yards, Haanryk Stahlburg rushing six times for 24 yards, and Ole Nurdsunn rushing six times for 23 yards. The defense also forced six sacks, led by two from Honorius Waalturs, and Andrik Ierunmungur caught an interception, and Steven Lindburgh recovered a fumble forced by Theo Laansur.
Neither team was able to get anything going through the air, courtesy of another snowy day in Thomasburg. As it was, many people were amazed that John Painter was called on to throw thirteen passes with the snow swirling around the field. That also helped to contribute to the very defensive nature of the game. Of course, the other side of that was that Karditan, who are rapidly becoming a rival for the Allamunnae, just tend to play some very good, defensive games with the Regulars.
The win allows the Regulars to finish the first half of qualifiers undefeated at home. They are so far 0-2 on the road as they go abroad next week to play against Powersith to close out the first half of qualifiers. It also leaves the 4-2 Regulars locked with 4-2 Karditan for second place behind the surprise group leaders from West Angola, who are 5-1.
Powersith 6 - 20 Allamunnic States
The next week, the Regulars reasserted themselves by downing Powersith 20-6 to put themselves tied with Karditan for the lead of Group 7. Leif Erikson gave a strong performance in his return after missing a game with injury, going 18/23 for 242 yards and a touchdown, a 65-yard strike down-field to Izaak Rolle. The Regulars' other touchdown came on a 12-yard touchdown run by Danyl Wyndhorst, who rushed a total of 15 times for 100 yards and a touchdown. The other running backs tallied, respectively, 5 rushes for 25 yards (Stahlburg), 4 rushes for 26 yards (Myers), and 5 rushes for 24 yards (Nurdsunn).
The defense tallied seven more sacks, amassed two turnovers (an interception by Andrik Ierunmungur and an interception by Steven Lindburgh), and did not allow Powersith to reach the endzone, forcing them to settle for two field goals, one in the first quarter and one in the third quarter, by which point, courtesy of those two touchdowns and Justin Connors' 34- and 29-yard field goals, the game was well in-hand.
The win ties the Regulars with Karditan for the Group 7 lead: depending on which tie-breakers are being used, the lead changes: Karditan leads on current tables due to advantage in point-differential, but the Regulars would have the lead based on head-to-head tie-breaker advantage at the moment. West Angola, who had been leading the group, dropped to third after they lost 26-0 to the Ironworkers.
After getting a mid-qualifying BYE, the Regulars will go on the road against the Sova Empire, who are currently 3-4, but who the Regulars dropped 37-0 in their qualifying opener.
"Our main thing going forward is to get some offensive production going. That's been our main problem in our losses. We've only allowed one touchdown through seven games, but we've only scored nine offensive touchdowns in that span, as well. Combine that with five field goals, and we're averaging less than twelve points a game. I know we're a defensive team, and we've stressed that wins are wins, no matter what the margin, but the fact is, there is a problem when our inability to score is starting to lose us games, as it has twice, now. So, our emphasis is probably going to be a little more offensive. For instance, if we were on a scale, with -5 being the most defensive and +5 being the most offensive, we might want to be around a 0, more truly balanced."
"Still," he continued, "I think we're about where we deserve to be. Frankly, we came into this World Bowl with a completely undeserved attitude of superiority, and we did not stop to really consider the fact that we really do have the targets on our backs, now. Combine that with some roster turnover, and we got the perfect storm to get these two wake-up calls. Well, consider those calls heard. We will be focusing on making the necessary changes we need to win all of our games moving forward, and hopefully to win this group, or at least get into the playoffs alive once again."
