But... that analogy doesn't work. The different parts of Frankenstein's monster aren't that different.

It all comes down to how the language is taught. Here, grammar and spelling in english is primary school stuff, while secondary school is for drilling poetry and Shakespear into your head. As for french, grammar and spelling was the main aspect of the subject right up until graduation. It's why most people sound terribly formal when speaking a second language.
