Nuclear fusion future

Postby Azaflaza » Mon Apr 08, 2013 11:47 am

So what I wanted to know was what exactly do the people of nationstates think would be the world wide effects of the development of nuclear fusion (in the real world)?
Would the technology be shared around the world and seen as the answer to the energy crisis and excessive CO2 emissions or will the rich countries hog the technology at the expense of developing nations?

As for me I think that nuclear fusion will be greatly embraced in the countries that can afford it but poorer countries will as usual lag behind thus reducing the possible benefits the technology could bring to the world.

As a side note if you wanted to you could try to guess which countries will be the first to develop it and what their intentions would be with it.

The first fusion reactors will likely be absurdly expensive, as the technology matures it will get cheaper. That's the way of things.

So you wouldn't expect any dramatic effects to arise such as when nuclear fission was developed?

always in motion is the future. it may very well at some point come to be. it will very likely not prove to be a free lunch if and when it is.

well wind and solar and so on, aren't a free lunch either, and no one is claiming them to be, but integrating all the clean forms of energy that are proven and reliable that we have now, can and would do the job.
the only reason we're not doing things that way, is that the are not as easily centralizable and monopolizable. fusion of course will be, and that makes it attractive to corporate greed.

it seem likely to prove a good thing, and finally one the corporate usurpation of the will of the people is more likely to go along with then those we have now which would be harder for it to maintain exclusive control of.

so i'm certainly not opposed to it, unlike fission which finds its own way of being an environmental problem, even without and dispite its not dumping carbon into the air and water.

so fusion; fine, wonderful, but its not something we have to hold our breath waiting for it to come along. not if we can get past ideological fanatacism, in the same way that monetary incentive got technological development past religious fanatacism.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

"economic freedom" is "the cake"

No. We already have weaponized fusion, what we need is slower, controlled fusion. And it doesn't pollute, pretty much at all, so that's not an issue either.

No need for a "will likely be"; (a) fusion reactor(s) already exist(s). Currently JET sucks power, though, since though they can make lots of energy they can't get at it properly. They're working on building a bigger one in the south of France, which will hopefully be able to generate useable power.

Well I mean the first commercially useful ones, of course the test reactors we're using are absurdly expensive.

I can't think of a military use for helium, really, if my knowledge of physics is correct and that's the by-product they're producing, so I'd say civilian power generation.
Don't be deceived when our Revolution has finally been stamped out and they tell you things are better now even if there's no poverty to see, because the poverty's been hidden...even if you ever got more wages and could afford to buy more of these new and useless goods which these new industries foist on you, and even if it seems to you that "you never had so much" - that is only the slogan of those who have much more than you.

Are there any countries that anyone would rather not see become the first to develop controlled fusion? Such as unstable countries in the Middle East "cough" Iran "cough".

Why? If anything controlled nuclear fusion is ideal for them from a west centric standpoint. It is a form of atomic energy that can't be easily converted into making warheads.

Well say for example in the extremely unlikely event that North Korea was the pioneering nation then it would keep the technology as an absolute secret to maintain an advantage over everyone else. The west don't even give them permission to have a nuclear weapons programm so they certainly won't let them keep this a secret and then North Korea will react as they usually would with aggression. If North Korea was to continue hogging the tech then they would begin producing massive amounts of energy that would in many ways fuel the countries activities and make them incredibly rich, also if past actions are anything to go by then their military would have unlimited access to this energy for whatever they wish to use it for.

Does that sound like a scenario that you would want to happen?

If North Korea can figure it out, I guarantee you someone else can. And unlimited electricity wouldn't exactly be as useful to their military as you think it would.

This sounds like a conspiracy theory waiting to happen. As much as I adore them, NORK could not develop their way out of a paper bag. Let alone figure out sustainable cheap fusion.

not to get technical, but we don't have weaponed fusion, a thermonuclear bomb is normally a two stage detonation. the first stage is a fission reaction that creates a second, more powerful fusion reaction. pure fusion bombs would, in theory produce no radiation.
and a pure fusion nuke would be bad as it would be easier to justify there use.

but anyway, yay fusion with lasers :D

"At the expense"? I'd like to know how much let's say Pakistan, Brazil, Congo and Indonesia have spent for ITER.

Zero. Zip. Nada. TANSTAAFL.

As a side note if you wanted to you could try to guess which countries will be the first to develop it and what their intentions would be with it.

EU, India, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea and USA. With a large EU advantage - given that it covers 45% of the costs and that it hosts the reactor (in France). And that the EU will also likely lead DEMO, and that it has already the PROTO project.

This, basically.

Only thing I'm not sure of yet is whether the hysterical anti-science opposition will come from the left or the right on this issue.
I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.

Interestingly, we actually might be runnig into a helium shortage in the next fifty odd years or so, from a few things I've been reading. Helium as a byproduct of energy generation is kinda awesome, in that case.

I have also come up with another possible point of discussion which is, what would be the repercussions of a private company that wishes to use the tech for its own financial gain? Would the public and government make an exception to the rules of capitalism and demand the rights to the tech themselves?
