Without war, there is no peace (Earth II)

Natural Preserve 006, Airstrip One, Goodrule Spanish Three

Deep beneath the forest, in places so secret that not even the almost all-seeing eye of the Goodbrother, his millions of surveillance cameras and unmanned drones, knew about, men gathered and prepared themselves for the decisive day. Among many false walls, secret passages and security systems, they gathered the best they could of information about the ongoing events, as men lived and died for England's last hope of liberty. However, sometimes, there were disagreements. Next to rounded marble table, twelve masked individuals sat down, with one spotlight above, as they looked at a map, a map of Britain and of indications of presence of Goodrule and Layartebian forces, with an annotation: "No hostile engagements since W-Day". An old tape recorder lied on the table, as one of the men, sighing first, moved his gloved hand to press the "play" button, as a voice began to announce:

"Not with a thousand years of tyranny, will the spirit of England be broken. The misery and oppression brought by the traitor of our original cause, the Goodbrother, has shadowed the sum of all past atrocities and acts of brutality against the innocent and the helpless, plunging much of Western Europe in a new dark age, forcing many of our people into inhumane labor and starvation, and taking alway from us all we held dear: Families gathered by love rather than by the force, colleagues made by friendship rather than by force, the right to see our loved ones whenever we want to, to travel and visit our relatives in other cities with no restrictions."

A click on the pause, as a voice than echoed, amplified by the acoustic profile of the room and materials it was built from, as the same faceless man who played the tape arose from his wooden seat, thrusting his hand at the map;

"The Layartebians haven't broken the military might of the Goodrule! The war still didn't go beyond the initial act of aggression." he pointed to the annotation, violently, shoving the map off the table, "and now you have declared war against our enemies! Do you know the consequences? Do you understand that the risks we are taking from doing this could damn our nation to an eternity of tyranny?"

"Operation Loch Ness was our last trump card!" another masked man objected, as he also stood, "we now can either wait as the Goodrule destroy the last vestiges of the desire for liberty from our people or take actions! Freedom requires unyielding courage! We have been in hiding for long enough! We already have sufficient conditions to stage our revolution! We have millions ready to act on the go signal!"

The other masked man simply tilted his head, as he gestured towards the tape recorder once again, while someone pushed the map back to the center of the table. The starter of the discussion then pressed the "play" button once again, as the gathering listened to the rest of the speech.

"They said it was an emergency, but there is no longer an emergency, but we allowed them to get through. They began slowly, to take one by one our sources of dignity and happiness, until we became nothing but empty shells, corpses shambling as zombies to the will of the Goodbrother. It is no lie that you may die from simply being in the 'wrong' place and time and listening to this, so remember that you should not simply let them take you away. Now, as you read this, you already have no choices besides fighting to death or surrendering to a slow, painful death through hideous torture and brutality. However, there is yet hope. You may not be alive once finally comes the day for us to breath freely, but think about those around you, about the children who cry for our help as the government kidnaps them from our families, abuses from them and turn them into broken shells, think of all your good friends that vanished without a trace, think that by fighting, the worst you'll have is a less painful death. Carry on, do not hesitate, and if you are old enough to remember of the times we were still free, think about how we could achieve something even greater right now. The Goodrule is the last gasp of tyranny, the constricting hand of a dying man over our necks. If we survive it, if we prove ourselves ready to let the flowers of November to blossom once again, we shall deserve something far greater than all the achievements of past struggles for freedom, and give to our children the best society that has ever existed in mankind history. And we must succeed, no matter the cost, for the fate of our nations, and of the human races, lies now at your hands. God bless England, God Bless Iberia."

The recording then ended, as the man removed the tape from the recorder, and while holding it on the palm of his glove, he explained, still showing dissatisfaction with how things ended:

"'Not with a thousand years of tyranny, will the spirit of England be broken' is the go signal our millions of sympathizers have been waiting for. As of now, a handful of secret caches of weaponry are being used and, from those who would inevitably end being brutalized by the 'Good'rule, men and women are being recruited to fight to the end. However," he pointed again to the map, "the Goodrule remains at the peak of their military might, and although at first they will use their secret police only, once they realize the magnitude of this operation, they may resort to anything to ensure their perpetuity in power, including the use of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons."

"While the Layarteb Navy is breathing at their necks and the Emperor of Layarteb needs no more than one pretext to start a real war? I find it very unlikely. Although the goal of provoking anything besides a cold war between Layarteb and the Goodrule failed, we have still achieved enough to limit the capabilities of our enemy from acting against our revolution." another masked man raised from his seat.

"I have doubts we could maintain a revolution like this, and something critical was missing: the almost complete crippling of their Air Force by Layarteb, for the Goodrule could firebomb cities that became beyond their control with impunity, like they once did. And even if we achieve victory, had we planned further another false flag operation, the toll of the revolution would have been far smaller."

"It'll come to a moment when the pilot is ordered to kill his own parents and children. No brainwashing can overrule basic instincts. And besides, " the other masked man shouted passionatedly, "every second we wait in cowardice, one more innocent is murdered by the fascist enemy in a hideous manner! Not like the brave men advancing against those who try to take their freedom, but like abused and tortured guinea pigs at the hands of sadists! Is that what we are going to wait for? For the next five million of victims from this government?"

"Unfortunately," the masked man who began the discussion then took his seat again, "my opinions are of no relevance, as now the go signal has been broadcast to every television, every public television across all the nations enslaved by the Goodrule, through a computer virus we developed, covertly added to the most recent Goodbrother speech by one of our men who have taken his secrets away with his own life."

He then finalized, by pointing again at the map: "And even as men live an die for freedom, who knows if Layarteb wouldn't take advantage of our revolution to attempt conquering our nations? We have been reckless, and now we have to find ways to deal with the consequences and still secure our dreams. As I am speaking, many are already preparing for the first of many street battles I expect to occur. Much blood shall be shed, innocent blood, and it may yet end in vain, however," he then rose once again, as he finished, "no matter what it takes, we must achieve victory. Today we are at war against the Goodrule, don't try to think we aren't in a war just because we are right now, safely below a hole to plan a strategy and gather information about the soon to start conflict instead of fighting outside. This is our only chance, we must not waste it!"

The first domino felt, there were still thousands, and at any time, they could stop falling. Something perhaps worse than a war with Layarteb in how many dead would come from it was beginning.

(OOC: Thread in progress. It'll be mostly a story, but it's open to intervention later)

Outskirts of Newcastle, 3:30 AM

The run down basement was probably more prone to shatter than a wet cardboard box, with crackles all over its walls, drips of water coming due to the intense rain outside, the poor prefab concrete tarnished by the weather and blackened, and windows where glasses long gone were replaced by wooden boards tied together by rusty nails. A single ceiling lamp hanged, flickering sometimes, its light focused at a large, map laid over an old wooden table.

"Here is the deal," an elusive shadow hidden by the disposition of light circled a position in the outskirts of the city map with an used up pencil, "there is one Luddite and four Buitres stationed at this air base, and the enemy is alert, but wouldn't expect something like this, in fact they still underestimate the level of resistance despite our mistakes."

"Wait one moment comrade!" suddenly another voice interrupted, and the attentions of those listening followed, "the enemy wouldn't make it that easy to capture one of their aircrafts, they probably have means to disable them through the datalink that couldn't be shut down by conventional tampering."

"I understand your concern, and yes, we will have to dump or damage the datalinks, no matter the harm it shall bring lacking them, and this will require even more time." he then circled three other points neighboring the air base in the map, and added, "these are the closest stations to the air base, and would reply to any attack in about six, eight and thirteen minutes respectively. However, if we are careful enough, we can avoid detection until the birds take off. I have gained access to some old jamming equipment, it could work, could not, but we must consider it won't work and if it does, then we'll have some free time to take further actions."

"But Chris, what if we fail?" the same voice once again asked, clearly in doubt about the entire idea, for in many ways, it was way too bold of a move, perhaps bolder than most moves that the key phrase triggered. However, they knew what was at stake. The war has been declared, the final war, so long they prepared and hid their intentions, so long they awaited for this day. The day liberty would start its final war against tyranny, the decisive moment: defeat would mean a likely eternity of oppression, and thus, they had to do their best. They have been enough time perfecting their skills to hide their dissent from the "all-seeing" Goodbrother, but now, finally, they could show their true identities.

"Then, Edward, you better have no problems with the thought of committing suicide, if you survive, because it would better than awaiting for what they would do to you," five nimble fingers grabbed a capsule as Chris offered it to Edward, "Cyanide, you'd better take it, unless you believe in the same 'god' those fascists worship." Edward took the pill from Christine hands, as he asked her, looking at her brown eyes. The woman had a stern demeanor, the looks of a young person who looks ten years older due to many hardships.

"I accept, but the way you speak, wouldn't it offend those Christians among us?"

"Edward, don't you realize? If we are to succeed at toppling this State, we must also topple all supporting structures, beliefs and values. "God" is a vision of a perfect government, a mirage to distract the folly from the truth, to harbor false hopes, to drain away the will of people to struggle against the oppression, as they foolishly await for a heaven that most likely does not exist. It is necessary to bring down religion as well, through other means than violence, of course. This "god" they worship is the embodiment of the "top-down", paternal, oppressive and hierarchical paradigm of human organization."

"Hey, you are preaching to the choir! And besides, I didn't ask for so much rhetoric, just a simple explanation that reducing the popularity of all religions is part of our strategic goals as well."

"All right! All right! So back to the matter at hand, I know each of you had a saying in this plan, but it's not too late to put new ideas into the paper before we execute them," the woman explained, "we already agreed that 'blinding' the enemy is the first step, and thus while our goal is to capture a B-12 Stratobomber and a cache of bunker-buster and fuel-air bombs to annihilate all surveillance processing units here and damage as much of cables as we can, other groups obviously have even greater risk targets like capturing anti-satellite missiles. Meanwhile, of course, some of our friends would appreciate some air support if we can afford the time to do it, even if the aircrafts we intend to capture aren't exactly made for it. Then we have to scuttle then and leave the air base, although I suggest you load up the Luddite with some anti-personell stuff to clear a way for us, James. And remember, don't risk yourself, there are very few able pilots among us, and we can't afford to let any of you die."

"I know," James replied, "but we're getting alive out of this one. They aren't expecting us yet, and we planned this for months, so we will have good chances. Any catch?"

"Only one," Chris became gloomy as he reminded, "you know what has to be done in case we fail to protect the airbase before you land safely back. Are you prepared for this?"

"Yes, I am," the pilot replied.

"Very well. Then, we should get ready and moving. We have twenty minutes to reach our location. Good luck to everyone." Chris said, as he took a lighter from his pocked and began to pile the documents into a metal tray, finally reaching down the papers and the map with the lighter, setting everything on fire while the men took their arms and prepared to leave the run down building, as they went through the alternate exit, going down rather than up.

The sewers. It was perhaps simpler to indoctrinate most people through subtle and less subtle means to have a extreme aversion for them than to bother putting cameras all over the ducts, and indeed, it mostly worked. Eight months ago, James would never think up in travelling through the sewers, but now, it was the safest "road" he had. The stench was expectedly very unpleasant, as his thick boots waded through the filth and, he followed Chris, who, armed with a SF-27A equipped with a silencer and with tactical flashlight and holding a map in his left hand, advanced through the maze of joints and ducts. Rats flew from their path, as if they knew following them wasn't a good idea, and thus, their long walk through the sewers began. Specially difficult for Edward, who volunteered to carry the heavy jamming equipment.

--------------------

In a normal environment, it is easy to breathe, so easy it's automatic. However, in places like sewers, there is a strong urge to simply hold the breath so the terrible stench stops coming. Being his first time, James felt a difficult, nauseating sensation as he struggled with the fetid smell for countless minutes.

"Are we there yet?" the question repeated once every five minutes, as it was answered with a couple of noes. There was also a certain aprehension, a certain feeling that, everything would change from now on. They would no longer have a place to hide, from now on, they could only push forward and fight against the Goodrule, and then, victory would mean more than freedom, it would be a matter of survival, with no turning back.

"To hijack an over two hundred feet long strategic bomber and use an enemy base as our own. This is insane! Why am I agreeing to this?" the noxious sewers awakened an inquisitive mood in James, as he questioned his own decisions, to no avail, knowing very well now it was too late to change his mind about it, he was way too compromised with the rebels to hide or try to live "normally", as if he just tried to run, they would find him and give to him a so terrible fate that he'd be tempted convert to the old Norse religions to believe he could die fighting and go to Heaven for it instead of going to Hell, as his current, weakened faith claimed. Of course, the claims of his comrades that the purpose of Christianism was too serve tyranny didn't help him to avoid questioning such part of his core beliefs.

Then, next to a ladder, Chris finally stopped, as James finally sighed with relief, knowing that he would soon crawl out of those sewers. It was then that Chris gave a thumbs up to Edward, as he already began to unpack the jamming equipment he was dragging in a wheeled cart, and to operate it. The gruff, visibly not very hopeful man began to adjust levers and dials in the old device, struggling to set it for the right frequencies according to a notepad he grabbed, storing valuable small pieces of intelligence about their enemy. Everybody stood in silence, awaiting for Edward's indicating of whether it would work or not, as Chris held an tampered Goodrule wiretap and placed a mic in his ear to check it.

"Done it, Now just one moment, cover me the best I can! I'm going to open that manhole, and try to not make much noise. Once it's clear, get out as fast as you can and go to the covers I mention." Chris mentioned as he threw the wiretap, turned off the flashlight, placed his SF-27A at the hip and began to climb the ladder, all other men following behind, with the device emmitting a very low hum left behind. When he finally reached the manhole, he then carefully began to push it away, and afterwards, he grabbed an improvised periscope from his backpack built from PVC tubes and raised it, scouting out his surroundings.

James was behind everyone else, following the men. He noticed as Chris climbed out, stood prone quickly, next to the manhole, close enough to allow those below to partly see him, and began to aim his silenced submachinegun towards a likely threat to provide cover, however, he clearly had no intention to start a shootout that could alert the entire place, unless completely necessary.

As his time to climb out finally came, he heard the muffled sound of a submachinegun, and discrete footsteps, when he was finally outside, in the darkness of the deserted streets facing the base's checkpoint, he spotted two of his comrades dragging a corpse towards his position. The enemy soldier, he looked at for a time, as he saw the fascist, the monster, the murderer and enemy of freedom: a mere boy, no older than sixteen from his looks, who was thrown uncerimoniously at the sewers.

"This is a war, the lives and freedoms of millions make of this action justifiable," their leader explained, noticing how James stared at the corpse of the young soldier as it fell over the sewers. "Let's go, there is still an entire base to take over." and thus James followed, as the lifeless face of the boy followed inside his mind. He was nearing the gates, where several sandbags were placed, but currently empty of man as nobody expected an attack in the heart of the Goodrule territory, and as they assumed the cameras would give enough time between the alert and the attack to not have an entire platoon stationed at the gates.

Carefully, they checked the machineguns in the sandbags, as they would, once the element of surprise was lost, use them in their favor, and as it was a good moment, they reloaded their magazines as well.

"Once the gate begins to open, fire at will and use the cover of the sandbags. There are several containers in the cargo area of this airfield, so don't be stupid, you know how to do this: fast but cautious." Chris explained, as Edward stood in the checkpoint to push a button.

The thick, solid steel gate began to open slowly, as the men prepared to open fire. Most switched to single fire mode for greater accuracy and saving ammo, which would be important later. There wasn't much of a fight to be expected, "only" two reservist platoons, with half of their machineguns already taken. As the courtyard of the base was revealed, soon the first shots began to be fired, and James carefully aimed his SF-27A towards what would be on his sight soon enough.

The base was massive, entirely walled, with a larger main compound, where the local officer should be, several hangars and a large airstrip, where one of the hangars was sufficiently tall and massive to be spotted behind the thirty foot tall gates. The gates opened, the internal roads revealed, and they were right there. He couldn't waste time counting. Most likely ten soldiers taking cover in the pillars that existed in the foyer of the main compound, in the rooftop, which gave to them the advantage of nullifying the cover the sandbags gave from that angle.

It was instinctive to always take on those nearest, and then on those above first. He began to fire small bursts, preferring to keep full automatic unlike some of his comrades, aiming carefully as he quickly got out of cover to fire. He couldn't waste time checking whether he took them down or not, when he wondered on one detail.

"The alarm! Why haven't I..."" He quickly took a great risk, as he got away from his cover for a greater amount of time and quickly scanned for any soldier running instead of fighting. He was getting nervous as the firefight continued. He knew that the alarm would alert the entire region if sounded, and thus he had to take such risk. Even hearing the sound of a very close bullet didn't stop him as he carefully aiming at the running soldier and fired.

When things calmed down a little, James then asked:

"Why aren't we using our grenades again?"

"We must conserve them for holding this base as long as possible once we secure everything!" Chris replied, and he was right. They were only fifty, and most of them weren't trained in arms but instead technicians to help getting the bomber they intended to capture to take off, against a swarm of enemies that would surround them as soon as they arrived. The Goodrule would go at every lengths to retake such important strategic objective, specially considering it was close enough to allow the bombing of their central assets in London.

Fortunately, those grenades proved uneccessarily, even though the fighting remained fierce. James noticed as part of the soldiers retreated to the inside of the main compound, but most of them slowly retreated towards the larger hangar where the B-12 was housed. It was obvious why, and thus, they followed the same pattern.

"James! I will stay with four of our men to surround the main compound and cover you! Everyone else, choose whoever you want to lead you and hurry before anything stops our mission!" Chris said as he and more four volunteers followed him, while the rest quickly raised their fingers at James, as he shook his head:

"Why me? I am sure you can pick someone better to lead this incursion."

"Hurry up James! You know how that hangar looks like from inside, think fast about it, remember its layout quickly and give us an idea of how to attack it!" Edward replied without any glint of patience.

"All right! The specialist lead! What a load of ... All right!" James sighed, "split yourselves in four-men team and take whichever positions you deem best to advance through. The hangar has one large main door and a backdoor, We should put most of our people through the front entrance and flank them through the back, if that isn't obvious!" and he then followed towards the objective, being part of the frontal assault. There were containers to the side of the hangar, through which he quickly led his team, which luckily had Edward holding on his tail like a glue as he eventually threw another one:

"Are we fighting for freedom or committing suicide? Even if we succeed, do you think we are going to get out of here successfully? Expect a whole company, if not a whole batallion to surround us!"

"If you want to get out and try your chances alone, you were always free to go." James said quickly, as he stood on one of the corners of the last container before the hangar main doors. Leaning through it, he tried to scout things on the other side.

"Damn! Why did I forget to ask for that periscope?" the thought came immediately, as he cautiously leaned, with his SF-27A ready. When he poked as little of his head as he could out, he spotted how things were nasty, and quickly went back as bullets began to fly at his direction. There were twenty soldiers taking cover at all good spots of the entrance, and he quickly took his radio to check how things were.

"Toc" he said through the radio, as no answer came, and he thought:

"I'm not sure if we could save all grenades. But let me see. That one went through the railing, the other five behind the door... I guess blind shots are the way."

"Edward, I think you are a better shooter than me. There are enemies at this," he pointed at his estimated directions, "this, and this positions, could you try taking them while leaning in and out quickly?"

"Give me a shot, it's not like we have much to lose." Edward shrugged as he went ahead and leaned through the container. James observed him, as he, almost in a flash, leaned out, fired a burst and went back, answered by coming bullets that failed to hit him. It was a disadvantage that the container didn't allow for such leaning to happen from the other end of it, as it was away from the line of sight to the hangar. Instead the soldier among them known for having the best reflexes covered their flank from there. And right at it, as he quickly began to shoot as some enemy soldiers risked taking the intiative in attempt to flank their position, a vulnerability they knew well enough after splitting themselves. Meanwhile, Edward continued to bravely risk himself by firing against the gross of enemy defenses at the main entrance of the hangar.

Suddenly, the radio began to come with a sound, while the casualties of the enemy increased through their fast but cautious advance, as so far, none of them died in their fighting against those who were mostly fresh recruits and maintenance staff in the base:

"Pip Pip"

"Pip Pip" James replied back through the radio, as he signaled it was the time. He heard the same message reciprocated several times, meaning everybody was ready. And thus, he said, as he prepared for the assault:

"Liberty!"

Edward began to fire at full automatic to cover them, as several suppressing fires came from all around the hangar entrance, and men advanced quickly towards positions of cover, each covering the other through several steps towards the final goal. James was one of the last ones, as he sprinted towards the opened, tall door that served as cover, and quickly turned around and leaned at the door. He remembered of the three maintenance railings in such hangar, and immediately followed the basic rule he always did, quickly leaning out of cover and aiming up, as he fired against the first moving thing he spotted. Another soldier taking cover to the other door did the same act, and to the backdoor, eight soldiers advanced taking several advantageous positions with cover inside the hangar.

The hangar shape was a pale shadow compared to the massive beast inside. The bomber seemed large enough to level a small town if fully loaded and to cover entire blocks with its shadow if it passed through them in low altitude, and perhaps, leveling entire cities was its real purpose, considering the nature of the Goodrule. It had a gigantic fuselage that blended with the wing, and had no tail, for otherwise no practical hangar could be built for it to fit inside. However, a few seconds as James continued to kill the enemies, the Hangar main doors began to close.

"Half of you cover us!" there was a certain team spirit that somehow led more or less half to stay behind and start suppressing fire against the hangar as James and many others ran inside. With the layout in his mind, he sprinted and turned left, to the place behind the railing where a large support beam, wide enough to provide cover, stood. Gunfire ricocheted through the other side of the beam as he sighed, and, with no time to rest, continued to exchange fire against the enemies pinned behind crates next to the massive bomber.

It was then that it happened, as he noticed one of his comrades falling down, as the others ran to carry him to cover as James and others used again suppressing fire against the now outnumbered enemies. Meanwhile a medic ran to attend their wounded, who, as James could notice, didn't die. When everything seemed to be going on their favor, he finally noticed as some of them began to run towards the bomber, while the hangar doors began to open, and their fire towards them intensified, as one of them used a machinegun.

"We can't let them get inside that plane!" James finally began to feel the burden of leading the men. He knew that some would die if they tried to stop them from ruining their plan, that he would be, in part, responsible for their deaths. He tried to conceive another option as the machinegun bullets ripped through the hangar interior, but he couldn't.

"I am not a leader!" he thought to himself, seeing as there were few seconds before those soldiers reached the plane and locked it from inside. It was then that he made his decision.

"Cover me!" he began to run outside of cover, crouching to avoid getting hit as fire came from both sides. He ran as fast as he could towards the cover of the stairs connecting to the plane. His heart beats increased, and hearing close bullets, he knew, at that instant, that his life could end at any moment.

It was like a flash, as he quickly fired against the soldiers getting inside the plane, right in time, and the firefight stopped. The enemies too a major risk to eliminate the person they perceived as the leader of the group, as they assumed they were like them, who would run around without purposed as misguided ants if not leashed by a seargent. Such mistake, and the courage the soldiers gained from seeing such bravery from their elected leader accelerated the battle for the hangar, as James sighed of relief again, knowing it was over, at least such part. As the men celebrated their utmost victory, with four of the enemies offering surrender and being held at the hangar, and the non-combatant personell that didn't participate of the fighting held as well for now, James stood next to them as he informed:

"Are our ex-bomber crews here? I need all of them to come with me, and those of you who know maintenance, get ready for loading up things, as for the fuel, considering they opened the hangar and that hose right there, I presume they already did it for us, but I'll check it anyway. I need four Daisy Cutters and twenty bunker busters, and fill the rest with smart bombs and, if there is any space left, MAA-88 missiles." he then reminded, "and Edward, disable the datalink, we'll use other means to contact people here from the air, and come with us, we need a communications expert."

And thus, they quickly assembled and prepared the Luddite for flight, as the "grunts" among them, except for those taking care of the temporary prisoners, left to help Chris fireteam deal with the stragglers in the main compound. Mechanics, strong men drove transport cars with the ordnance, with the massive Daisy Cutter bombs standing as the most important among them

"Why the daisy cutters?" Edward asked.

"Convenient there are no residential areas nearby because the Goodrule would rather not risk giving cover to potential attackers. Didn't you say our men who stay on the ground will be surrounded by perhaps even an entire batallion? This way we can give them a large aid if we hit it right regarding when and where to drop these babies."

"And most likely kill everybody on the floor too! Are you mad James?"

"I am a trained bomber commander and pilot, I know what to do, Edward."

Suddenly one of the men signaled all was clear, and Edward tampered properly with the datalink, a man with earmuffers went outside to signal for taking off. The massive bomber was truly something to behold inside. The crew compartment was very large, and there was decent comfort for something developed by the Goodrule. Two bathrooms with showers were inside, there were four bunks that allowed for each "shift" to sleep when it was used in long-duration intercontinental missions and there was enough space for more eight people, as it was clear that the bomber was made for prolonged flight endurance. The crew cabin was massive, with space for two rows with four large, comfy seats in side by side layout and a massive general heads up display combined with individual displays. In fact, James felt like if he was in the bridge of a ship rather than inside an aircraft due to the size and amount of instruments. Back when he was in active duty, all he piloted were old B-52s. Things truly changed from them.

He took his seat next to the co-pilot, and began to prepare for take off. Following the same procedures, as the five turbofans began to run, and slowly, with its wings fully swept, the bomber began to advance towards the airstrip as he saw its approach from the cabin. Pulling the pedal to the right, as vectored thrust and elevons shifted, the bomber slowly began to turn towards the airstrip, and he then began. The feeling of taking off was incredible, as if he was lifting an ancient flying beast from old legends, with a massive thrust being felt, as it began to wade through the kilometers long airstrip, slowly climbing up. Soon, the sight of the base, where the fighting wasn't over yet, disappeared from the cabin, and only the dark sky and distant street lights below could be seem as he gradually climbed through the air. The last thing he heard before the base was completely beyond the horizon was his gunner saying: "I spotted hundreds of soldiers moving towards the base!" as he checked the thermographic cameras feed.

It would be a long, dangerous and compromising mission, in more ways than James could ever imagine.

James watched the sight of the night skies, marking the time before the first target would be on range to be destroyed. Ten stations that processed all gathered surveillance of Newcastle and surrounding towns, that gave to the enemy a gigantic advantage. No victory could be achieved as long as they remained intact. More concerns existed, concerns that ran deep into the person rather than into what happened around.

"What if this ends for nothing? I'd only have wrong people then, for what purpose? And, besides, we could just be paving the way for another tyrant, perhaps worse than the Goodbrother, just like in most revolutions." his doubtful mind threw such questions, as he saw the HuD showing the marked targets approaching into range while the massive aircraft broke through the barrier of sound. It would be half a minute at most before making the decision.

"Edward, once we throw the first bomb, they will know our position, so we should at least have an idea of theirs. Turn on the radar after the first strike." James instructed, as he began to focus on the approaching target. Twenty seconds were left before he would finally be able to launch the bunker-buster.

"Very well, nothing like choosing painting a huge bullseye on us or running in the middle of lions with a blindfold, right?" Edward scowled, with his usual banter, "at least some of them are going down too this way. And co-pilot, get ready to launch."

"Yes, now we need to concentrate because things are going to get hot soon. We are at seventy-two thousand feet now, but don't feel safe. Be prepared to lock on potential hostiles while we take evasive action." James explained, as he looked at the target through the display, and pressed a button, opening the large sliding doors of the internal bay, and selecting a bunker buster from the different armaments available. After five seconds, the target began flashing, and almost instantly the co-pilot pressed a red trigger in his stick. The bomb began to fall, with its movable tail making course adjustments as it homed towards its goal. It was then that the co-pilot asked the question, the matter they were trying to forget but could not:

"James, we just dropped a bomb against an apartment building, there were innocents sleeping there."

"It is their fault, these fascists! They built their facilities beneath residential buildings to use their inhabitants as human shield! They are the ones who murdered them, as they knew the consequences!" James replied, shaken by anger, "and yet they dared to intentionally build military facilities inside and beneath civilian buildings. They will pay for these crimes!"

"But James, we dropped the bomb, not them!"

"Listen, Aaron! We would have dropped these bombs there, civilians or no civilians inside! Upon our actions depend the freedoms of hundreds of millions and the lives of millions that would be tortured and murdered by this government if it is not defeated!" James insistedly defended himself, although even he had doubts about such action, "now we don't have time to discuss, we are coming to the next target to blind our enemies!" he sighed, as he knew that all the ten stations were built beneath civilian apartments, that together housed thousands of innocents. He tried to think on the millions of innocent lives such actions depended upon, but the choice was still bitter, and there was a remnant of remorse from the first bombing.

After stepping on the left pedal, the bomber began to head towards the next target, and James wondered about a certain peculiarity, as he remembered, with the active radar now turned on:

"Edward, no signs of SAMs or fighters yet, isn't this strange?"

"The closest threat would take about ten minutes to reach us," he laughed, "so we still have about three minutes before we are massacred, maybe five. And know what is the best about it? Those Vultures are sufficiently stealthy for us to only detect them at close range, meaning it could keep firing MAA-88 from high altitude without being caught."

"Edward, did you forget that the CL-32 can't climb as much as this plane without severe performance issues? We are more than one thousand miles above its service ceiling, so a stealthy drop would be too inefficient, and they'll be forced to climb above their optimal flight altitude, giving us a chance," Jame counter-argued, and explained, "we have one minute and half of travel before the next surveillance station. Keep focused comrades. We still have five left." James announced, as the mission carried on. If Edward wasn't being overtly pessimistic, they would only have further five minutes of peace, at best, before the enemy sent their fighters.

James said no words as they succesfully bombed another listening station, and the civilian apartment building above it as well, nobody said a word, but instead maintained their sense of belief that the outcomes of such action would morally justify such "collateral damage", however, it was still very hurtful to delve much into thinking about it, and instead, they wore masks of technical efficiency and coldness in the hopes of clearing the thoughts about such civilian lives being ended from their minds. There were now just three minutes, according to Edward estimations, before the Air Force sent fighters to down them, and although, at such very moment, battles began to erupt across all of Airstrip One, their attacks would make of them a very high priority target, for, such stations were critical for the Goodrule. Without them, a wide area encompassing almost a quarter of the British Isles would be cut off from any surveillance for a time.

It was perhaps morbid to think how pushing a trigger would end with thousands of lives, but the co-pilot still performed such action for the third time without hesitation, as the third bunker-buster fell from such high altitude. The fuel of the bomber was burning fastly, with most of the flight time being spent at supersonic speeds, as they needed as much speed as they could, rather than range to perform their mission.

"One minute remaining, or less, stay alert! Edward, have the countermeasures and air-to-air missiles ready."

"We are going to die anyway, but at least we can say we tried." Edward shrugged, as he began to press several buttons and saw the interface changing ahead of his several displays. He seemed confident of his abilities, but at the same time thoughtful that he wouldn't be able to save them, that the mess would be beyond what anyone could solve.

As James continued his flight towards the next objective, suddenly a missile alert began to flash in Edward's screen. Statistically, a bomber outnumbered by air superiority fighters stood no chance... but perhaps they still had a chance to complete the mission.

When the missile alert began flashing, James immediately pulled the stick up, while throttling the engines to their maximum, for he knew there was only one way to gain an advantage against the fighters, by forcing them to launch their missiles upwards, which would cut off significantly their no escape zone. It was an old concept of aerial warfare that the airplane at a higher altitude had an advantage in combat against the one in a lower altitude. Immediately however, as the active radar was already on before, Edward began to focus on his task. The juggernaut began to climb through the skies, losing momentum. Evasive maneuvers would be pointless.

"We must out-run them! If they get in range to launch short range missiles we are dead!" James warned as he force the heavy fuselage to its limits with the combination of acceleration and inclination to climb up beyond its service ceiling, while the wings slowly swung closer to the fuselage, increasing their sweep. Edward watched the increasing warning, timing the incoming threats. Pressing quickly a button, suddenly the skies were lightened as dozens of countermeasures were simultaneously launched behind and to the sides of the bomber. Tensely, he awaited, knowing that if it failed, his life would soon end.

Edward sighed of relief, and continued to operate the radar and retaliatory systems. The altimeter in the glass cockpit indicated they were at seventy-six thousand feet, while a massive sonic boom soon emanated from the bomber, which continued at maximum acceleration. Then, finally the threats appeared to the radar: six CL-32 fighters, only sixty kilometers away.

"I got a lock on these bastards, firing one" Edward answered, as one of the internal bays of the Luddite opened, and a pair of missiles flew from it, moving at the opposite direction of the bomber. This repeated five other times as all hostile fighters were targeted, at the same time more missiles were incoming against the Luddite, which began to lose acceleration slowly as the altitude increased, and the air became more thin and hot for the turbofans.

"Why are they firing everything at once? If they keep this way they will have to rearm after three more..." suddenly the observation of one of the crew members was cut short by the noise of more dozens of countermeasures. There was a feeling of turbulence, as if something flew very close to the fuselage at a very high speed.

"Close call," Edward tapped the wall of the plane, "but it seems death want to play with us first." he then became frustrated as his checked the radar, "They managed to evade all the missiles! Damn it! Another batch coming!" he operated at a franctic pace, as more missiles were launched towards each of the fighters chasing them. Perhaps the fact they were among some of the best before the war wasn't a lie, event though a few of them never used their field of expertise in bombers before.

"Edward! They are throwing everything they have because they are desperate!" James shouted, "Keep firing, for if we force them to take evasive maneuvers they will lose speed and momentum and won't be able to close in! We need just more one minute to outrun them!" Looking at the HuD, as the altitude approached eighty thousand feet, he began to pull slightly down the stick to reduce the impact of deceleration. "And we are heading towards our next goal! twenty seconds! get ready to drop another bunker-buster!"

"But James! We can't risk bombing something at supersonic speed."

"Why do you think they have point of impact for all types of dumb bombs this beauty can load, at supersonic speeds, calculated by the avionics, for fancy? We can and we will do this!" James answered, denying the doubts of the man responsible for the act. Another missile warning quickly appeared, as Edward readied to deploy another swarm of countermeasures.

Suddenly, they felt a terrible shockwave combined with the loud sound of an explosion, throwing their bodies held by the safety belts, and causing a temporary fall of the plane from its previous altitude. James shuddered, quickly compensating and seeking to stabilize the plane with the stick as the warning message appeared: Engine Five was destroyed by a missile. He took a deep breath as he began to pull up, passing through tense moments while the crew awaited anxiously what fate awaited. Finally, their fall stopped and their flight stabilized. The altimeter indicated they were at one hundred five thousand feet of altitude, roughly at the upper half of the Stratosphere, far above the cloud line. The fighters were a few kilometers below them, unable to reach their current altitude, but still chasing them, although their distance was far greater now, beyond the no escape zone of their long-range missiles. Eventually, the stealth fighters vanished from their radar. From the cockpit, a completely alien sky for most inside appeared, something few have ever witnessed. Very few planes could fly at such altitudes, and most of them were spaceplanes.

"That was really close! But they are coming back! We were very lucky Edward, now, everyone, fourth target in three, two..."

Although there was a turbulence from dropping a bomb at such speeds, the fears of Edward proved inconclusive, as the bomb fell safely from such extreme altitude, homing itself towards its target: another surveillance station beneath the residences of innocents. Using the best of his piloting skills, James yawed the plane through extremely long curves while maintaining as much from its speed as he could with one engine missing. While he approached the fifth target, he decided it was time to contact his comrades:

"This is James! What is your situation? We were chased by six fighters, lost one of the engines but still have a chance. Requesting fighter escort if possible!"

"James!" there were obvious sounds of firefight in the background, "thank God you are alive! We are being attacked by an entire batallion here! We are deploying everything we can to hold them, including the three CL-32 in the base!"

"Chris, we need these fighters! We need an escort now! If those chasers catch us up again we will be dead!"

"How much before you accomplish the mission objective, James?"

"Eight minutes, take or give one."

"James! If I don't contact you in eight minutes, move your bomber to these coordinates I'm uploading to your bomber avionics temporary storage, get your parachutes ready and jump!"

"But? No! I don't need air support Chris." James changed of idea as he realized what Chris was doing. He obviously meant he didn't expect for him and his men to survive if he provided air defenses for James.

"No! James, if you Fail, this revolution will be over! Our survival is not more important than the liberty of millions! We will hold them James! I asked my men to not surrender under any circumstances! And if I survive! I am coming to meet you again."

"But Chris, you don't..."

"Goodbie, James, it has been a honor to fight for freedom at your side, comrade." the radio was suddenly shut down.

"Goodbie, comrade." James answered at the radio, as he placed it back.

"You heard it, we must succeed now." James said to everyone, as all men knew. They weren't being lied to: their mission was perhaps the most important for the revolution, one that would allow for quickly liberating Scotland, and perhaps convincing part of its military forces to defect. They'd be willing to pay whatever price freedom would cost.

As time passed, they would soon discover whether all such sacrifice has been worth or in vain. They destroyed the seventh target, and fuel was already becoming below half capacity due to their constant travel at supersonic speeds. Five minutes have passed, eventually, three friendly marks appearead far away on the radar, while they proceeded with the mission.

Two minutes later, one of the three signs vanished, another casualty from an air battle they didn't witness directly. James watched the clock, hoping that soon Chris would contact them. There was only one target left to destroy. Thirty seconds later, he still hoped for the contact as everyone prepared for dropping the last bomb. Meanwhile, the two surviving CL-32 pilots began to approach them as they finally felt same to reduce somewhat their speed and lower altitude. eventually getting only ten kilometers away from them to provide escort.

A button was pushed for the last time this day, and likely for the last time in that B-12 Luddite. A bunker buster began to fall, destroying one last civilian apartment and dozens of innocent lives together with the military facility beneath it. Chris never answered back through the radio, and both the bomber crew and the fighter pilots knew what such fact meant, as they began to move towards the given coordinates.

Edward became particularly gloomier after the mission end. While they readied their parachutes, after fifteen minutes of flight, James also observed that the two fighters were getting lower, probably going to use nearby roads to land at the fields. Looking at Edward, James wondered what made him suddenly shift his mood, asking:

"Why are you like this Edward? We survived."

"Yes, but now I remembered why one of those 'targets' felt so familiar," he suddenly scowled, "what do you want for me to feel after I helped you kill my wife and my son 'for freedom' ?"

"Edward? Lets go! I know it is difficult, but there was no other way, and besides, maybe they weren't inside the apartment."

"I am going down with this plane! If I am going to Hell because of it, I deserve it! I killed my own family James!" he shouted desperatedly, "now you think I can just live and forget? Forget that I bombed my own house, my own son, my own wife whom I loved?"

"Edward, you shouldn't give up! That is what they want Edward, I know it is difficult, but everyone of us have lost something because of this government. We must stick together and be strong! Don't falter! Jump with us Edward, I promise I will do what I can to find your family, and I promise you: your family is alive!"

"Fine! I will wait for the news to confirm the obvious!" Edward made an even less pleasant scowl than his usual, "but you know what I'll do once I discover what I already know."

"No, your family is still alive, so, let's go!"

And thus, one by one, the crew of the captured bomber jumped at the fields, pulling their parachute chords. The bomber continued to fly, without guidance, until crashing not so far from where they were landing. While they still hovered in the air, the lights from the bomber crash site appeared, far away, flames burning through the wreckage of the three million and fifty thousand credits airplane.

The small air battles that happened in Newcastle would be very noticeable, very evident, together with the culmination of hundreds of firefights along the streets, and several sorties started all of sudden with close air support aircrafts, helicopters and even other Luddites. No matter how much censorship the Goodrule applied, the Layartebians, with carriers and patrols breathing at their neck, would realize that something big was happening inside the territory of those who mission killed their carrier with a rogue submarine. Particularly intense combat ocurred in Scotland, as the revolutionaries expected for James mission to succeed, and pushed as much as they could the enemy. Their hope was to force the Goodrule out of Scotland while they were still surprised. The conflict however, would be long and bloody, and the price of freedom, paid in countless lives.

OOC: About time right? I had to wait for something to happen I mean or else what's there to see? Just a flying plane.

The Empire had levied a significant amount of its intelligence gathering and monitoring resources on the Third Spanish States. Since their inception, they proved themselves to be extremely hostile towards the Empire and that wasn't an understatement either. During the Cottish Flu Pandemic, the Empire had watched as the Goodrule government committed atrocity after atrocity. They were most than just a totalitarian state, they were controlling the lives of each and every one of their citizens. They had turned the island of Great Britain, the Iberian Peninsula, and the northwest corner of Africa into a tyrannical, totalitarian, Big Brother state with only one intention, control. Within the borders of the Third Spanish States, citizens lived lives that were anything but free. As far as the Empire knew, no nation traded openly with the Third Spanish States and no nation held diplomatic relations with the regime. Of course, there were potential candidates out there that truly could be brought into diplomacy with the Third Spanish States over one simple and effective argument, countering the Empire, as if the Empire were some worldwide force of reckoning. It mattered not though as such things were unpreventable in most respects. The Third Spanish States were a thorn in the side of the Empire, which controlled Ireland, Iceland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and the Shetland Islands. The island of Great Britain was, for all intents and purposes, surrounded by the Empire. The seat of Goodrule authority, the island was a stone's throw away from the Empire. What had once been the Holy Republic of Hawdawg, among the Empire's closest of allies, now was what the Russians and Nerotikans could never be, and that was effective.

The resources the Empire devoted to the Third Spanish States didn't necessarily reduce its ability to monitor elsewhere in the world. On the contrary, it fostered the creation of new resources and the manufacturing of new locations, increasing the Empire's ability to watch over the world. OLYMPUS, originally created amongst the October Alliance members was now the most effective way of monitoring the intentions of the Third Spanish States. Spy satellites, signals stations, spy ships disguised as civilian trawlers and research vessels, and aerial UAVs and reconnaissance aircraft kept to international zones and watched the Third Spanish States with heavy intention. Submarines and ships patrolling the waters were some of the most effective but the ICARUS stealth satellites operating high above the Earth's surface were the least detectable, which wasn't to say that the Layartebian submarines were detectable at all. They were operating under the stealthiest and quietest of conditions and did so with enormous restraint and time spent patiently waiting. They never exceeded their tactical speeds, never surfaced, and rarely came to periscope depth, instead monitoring underneath the waves. Ships moving in international waters did the same and, by and large, the Empire just listened and watched. Few active signals were thrown into Goodrule territory save for radar waves, which were broadcast from long-range and short-range radar posts and ships operating at various locations. There wasn't one part of the Goodrule Third Spanish States that was more watched than any other. For its close proximity to Ireland, the island of Great Britain received a significant source of these signals but they were proportional to the territory covered. Perhaps of considerable interest were two main locations, Scotland and the Outer Hebrides. The Inner Hebrides were monitored just the way Scotland was but the Outer were different, a poised threat to the Empire more so than anything else because of their detached nature from the mainland. As such, they were also considered one of the weaker points of the Goodrule's mighty dominion. Despite their close proximity to Scotland, the Empire could, if it so desired, surround, siege, and invade them while repelling the Goodrule's air force and navy from near and afar. Of course, any plan to attack the Outer Hebrides would be done as part of a massive, total war with the Third Spanish States and not an isolated operation. The goal would be to put the Goodrule forces on the island of Great Britain on more than three fronts, attacking across the Irish Sea, from the Shetland Islands, taking the Outer Hebrides, and also assaulting them from carrier groups in the North Sea and potentially from Denmark, where the Empire had several Vesta rockets stationed at the goodwill of the Cottish. The Iberian Peninsula would be victimized by flights from the Azores and from shipping north and west of it, keeping the Goodrule Navy from resupplying and reinforcing the island of Great Britain. Long-range fighter patrols would target transport and bomber aircraft with long-range missiles that could be fired from well beyond visual range and, against unagile transport and bomber aircraft, they would achieve stunning hit rates, especially since they would be fired from practically head-on positions. The tremendous speed of the Goodrule B-12 would be of little use against a head-on missile. They would have to turn and fly away, back towards the Iberian Peninsula, where they would be unable to help forces on Great Britain. Layartebian holdings in the Canary, Desertas, and Savage Islands would be on hand to fight against Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula too, distracting them from fighting in Great Britain. Cape Verde and Bermuda, also in the Atlantic, would be power bases for Layartebian air and sea power. Iceland would be able to put the island of Great Britain in check just the same as Greenland served every purpose necessary. Dubbed Operation ZEBRA FIST, the Empire's Imperial Layartebian Military would launch a full-blown, offensive war against the Goodrule Third Spanish States, entirely by itself. With Cottish assistance, the Empire's odds increased. With any other help, the Empire was guaranteed to win with marginal casualties.

ZEBRA FIST had been first envisioned when a mysterious submarine attacked a Layartebian carrier group as it steamed between Ireland and Iceland. The attack had never been proven to be from the Goodrule Navy nor had the Goodrule Navy taken credit for it but everyone who was anyone knew it was either the Goodrule Navy or some rogue submarine still acting in the name of the Russian Federation. Its destruction and subsequent sinking meant that the true nature of its origin remained unknown. It had sunk to the bottom of the North Atlantic and there, the waters were so deep that recovery of any parts of the wreckage were simply impossible. While its location remained known, it was merely inaccessible. The gigantic, multi-trillion dollar SOSUS net laid throughout the North Atlantic, North Sea, Arctic Sea, and elsewhere throughout the world by the Empire and its October Alliance allies had been used to confirm every bit of the sinking of the submarine and while a wounded, Layartebian carrier returned to port for months upon months of repairs, another one was put on station to replace it. Now, with the mobilization of the Imperial Layartebian Military and the threats in South America and the Pacific, it was only a matter of time before the Goodbrother suspected that the Empire was coming for him. ZEBRA FIST had been put on the back burner though and while it was kept constantly updated as intelligence yielded more and more about the Goodrule Third Spanish States, it was still months away from action, should it be necessary. The Empire would have to first win over Cottish support for an offensive and certainly non-retaliatory war. The Empire would seek out some of its other allies as well, the Germans, the Franians, the Alaskans, and so on and so fourth. There was even hope for support from the Africans in the United States of Brink who would benefit tremendously from an open society, where they could trade. It would be, in all regards, World War II if the Empire sought war with the Third Spanish States, regardless of whether they were fighting it alone or with allies. Nuclear weapons could be used but chemical weapons were almost certain to be used.

It was through all of these resources that the events in Scotland didn't go unnoticed. However, despite being recorded and witnessed, their meanings were veiled and not quite understood. Questions were posed left and right: was it a revolution or a rogue element within the military? Did some nation mount some sort of clandestine operation? Was it a false flag attack to be blamed on the Empire? Without any sort of explanation from those involved, the Layartebian Ministry of Intelligence could guess and hypothesize, with great odds but without true truth. Everything seemed absolutely normal as a single B-12 bomber, detected by a long-range, low-band, surveillance, anti-stealth radars picked up its takeoff and subsequent ascent to high altitude. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. It was a single bomber and not heading towards the Empire whatsoever. There was no threat to be seen and no alarms to raise, everything seemed normal. Then, the mighty bomber began to drop ordinance and not on a practice range either. A KH-14 ICARUS-A spy satellite, flying over Ireland watched and sent back bursts of imagery and live feed through laser communication but also through extremely, highly encrypted microwave transmissions sent only to a ground station in a direct, line-of-sight, and not anywhere that the Goodrule could intercept. Even if they could though, breaking the encryption would take them decades, by which time, the encryption keys would have already changed a hundred times over and the encryption growing only stronger.

It was then that the questions began to be posed and the alarm bells rung. Why had they bombed an apartment building and, with devastating effect? Was it a false flag operation, to be blamed on Layartebian spies? No one knew but the one thing the Empire could rest assured in was that there weren't any spies in the Third Spanish States. It was simply too difficult to get any in and those within couldn't communicate outside without being monitored. The risk was too great and instead of HUMINT, the Empire rested on MASINT, SIGINT, ELINT, and IMINT. The B-12s flight path was studied and watched and it bombed one site after another, each one what appeared to be a civilian target. Of course, they could be disguised as civilian targets but that couldn't be determined just by looking at photographs. Such would require someone on the ground, watching, recording, and conveying what he or even she saw. Despite the fact that women did not serve in the Imperial Layartebian Military except in the civilian, Ministry of Defense, there weren't the same rules in the Ministry of Intelligence and women who wanted to be warriors went there. The bomber struck a second target and then, a third, all with devastating effect and brilliant accuracy. The KH-14 continued to provide the feed as the Ministry of Intelligence became very alive, even during the late hour. The KH-14 wasn't just focused on the flight of the lone bomber though. It was focused on the entirety of Great Britain and the violence upon it as signals intelligence picked up what seemed to be jamming, old and outdated jamming signals but, jamming signals nonetheless. Not directly aimed at the satellite either, they certainly aroused a great amount of suspicion. Perhaps some sort of revolution was happening otherwise, this was the most brilliantly staged, false flag operation that ever existed. The situation grew juicier as the B-12 bomber suddenly became engaged by fighters, giving away their positions once they fired their missiles at a bomber now accelerating to supersonic speed and climbing towards the lowest regions of space. The bomber was the target of an air offensive and the skies above Great Britain became more or less a shooting gallery. Stealth fighters, which were still seen by the extremely powerful but low bandwidth radars, were chasing down the B-12 and firing upon it with every effort. The B-12 even fired back but no explosions meant that their shots missed. Watching with curiosity, the Ministry of Intelligence and soon, the Ministry of Defense, knew that there was only one thing to do to Ireland and that was to place it on high alert. As the battles intensified, the Imperial Layartebian Military, especially the ILDF, went to high alert as Layartebian forces around the globe continued at MILCON Level Three. Level Two was almost a certain upgrade if things kept up this way on Great Britain. Surface-to-air sites were swung into more than just an idle state and any Goodrule fighter or bomber crossing the Irish Sea or coming towards Ireland could find itself engaged, even within Goodrule airspace. This was a moment of tension that even the Emperor himself had no predictions for, only proactive measures to keep the Empire safe and out of harms way.

"That's something you don't see everyday," said Field Marshal Jan Peter Balkenende as he looked over the shoulder of the operator of a satalite. "Put that on screen and record it, I believe that we needed to let the President and King know about the situation." The field marshal walked over to a telephone and spoke to his comrades, "I would like to convene an emergency meeting of the military council."

"Welcome, I hope you are all aware of the situation with our neighbor to the west, correct? Said the field marshal during the briefing. He stood their expecting some reaction, but instead getting dumbfounded looks and complete silence. "Okay..." He pause for a minute, a little irritated that the rest of the group hadn't been scanning the radars, or even watching the faint explosions in the skies. "...Well their seems to have been a battle, put the recording on screen please." He waited as the recording began to play, then watch for a minute till he knew everyone had seen it at least once. "If you look at the maps I've given you, you'll see that the battle was raging in Scotland, now judging by the fact that both sides are using the same weapons, I would say these guys here might be rebels. And these guys here, are the government forces fighting the rebels."

"How can you say they are rebels, what if someone invaded them." Marshal of the Air Force Dennis van Uhm replied, cutting the field marshal off short. "Well if you were watching, you would see how the soldiers were dressed, one side is in clad in combat gear and is heavily armed. The other, while being completely outnumber, is clad in whatever they can find. What armed force, that has the capabilities to attack a country that size, doesn't have matching uniforms?"

"Guys, guys, stop your bickering, lets keep this a little more civil." President Maxime Verhagen cut in with. "Clearly the field marshal is right here, their is a rebellion. I am concerned for this as well, I do not want some new radical movement, apart from the one already in place, next door to us. What if the conflict boils over to our country, that would be unacceptable." The president was in good spirits though, knowing that he might be able to test his new aircraft out. He had been pushing the build team to finish the first working model as soon as possible, and with the air force being restocked with this awesome aircraft, the Rivearans now have a deadly force of fighters and bombers to patrol the skies.

The president let the 3 military leaders argue about what they thought should be done before speaking up. "Alright, here is what we're going to do, we will right a letter to the good rule telling them to straighten the situation out so we don't end up dealing with one similarly. If that doesn't work, I think we might need to keep the peace in Scotland." The president then told the Admiral of the Fleet Johan Willem Friso, to: "Deploy the 1st Fleet of the Netherlands to the north sea right outside the 3rd Spanish State's territorial waters." He also mentioned to: "deploy the new The Moordenaar Klasse Multirole fighter on board the carriers just in case the fleet get attacked." While telling the field marshal to: "call up the 3rd Reservist Army, and the 6th Reservist Army for the preparations."

We couldn't help but notice your situation in Scotland, and we're sorry that your citizens have came to the conclusion that armed resistance is the way to go. But while we are concerned for your country and willing to send humanitarian aid, we are also concerned for our own well being. See, as you know, RIveara is very close to the British Islands, and a conflict their could surly make its way to our nation. What we are getting at, is we would like your word that your conflict will not make its way to Riveara.

Corrupt Dictatorship

Postby Cotland » Sat Jan 23, 2010 7:26 pm

A Cottish EP-8C Aries III electronic intelligence-gathering aircraft had been up and about, flying in lazy circle-eights in international airspace over the North Sea, well clear of the territorial borders of the Third Spanish State as the technicians inside the highly modified aircraft, based on the P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, operated the highly sensitive equipment and listened in on the electronic signals being emitted from inside the iron curtain of Great Britain. As such, when a new electronic signature emerged on the airwaves from over Britain, the signals were picked up by the EP-8 and processed by the computers, and quickly identified as a B-12 Luddite bomber. This made this otherwise boring mission extra interesting for the crew, who immediately began recording the signals for later analysis somewhere in Cotland. Before long, the interesting situation turned exciting as the Third Spanish State started scrambling fighters and the airwaves exploded in TSS traffic. Naturally, all this was relayed to the Mission Controller in Norway, who relayed it on to the Cottish Intelligence Service (CIS).

CIS monitored the situation in Britain closely, using its access to the October Alliance OLYMPUS network as well as its own satellites to monitor what was going on in Britain. As a result, the Operations Staff in the CIS headquarters had a front-row seat to the proceedings in the skies over Britain.

As the raging air battle drew further to the east, towards Cottish territory, the Duty Officer decided that it was getting a little too close for comfort. If they continued on the course the air battle was raging, it wouldn't be long until they were closing on Cottish airspace, something which would be most unfortunate. With this in mind, the Duty Controller picked up a phone and warned the Southern Norway Air Defence Sector that things were going down in the skies over Britain and that they might spill into Cottish airspace soon. The relevant info was forwarded to the Air Defence Sector headquarters in a deeply buried bunker complex outside the city of Stavanger, something which prompted the Air Force Colonel on duty that night to scramble some fighters of his own - F-14E Tomcats belonging to the Naval Aviation Arm's Fleet Fighter Squadron 31, Maritime Air Wing 3, based at Sola Naval Air Station - to defend the EP-8 and Cottish sovereignty, as well as make an uncomfortable but necessary phone call to a villa outside Stavanger to wake up the Air Force Major General in overall command of Southern Norway's air defences. The communiqué he had gotten from CIS had been marked with the day's flash codeword, which meant that it was sent to the political leaders as well as all major commands as well as the air defence sector, and that it had to be in the hands of the commanding officers of said commands within 15 minutes of message being received. Within 15 minutes, the Cottish Chancellor, Defence Minister, Foreign Minister and a number of other officials would have been awoken and quickly briefed on the situation, as well as reassured that the Air Defences were on top of the situation.

As the two F-14E Tomcats on 15-minute alert raced down the runway at Sola, pilots were being yanked out of their sleep and ordered to take to the air, intended to join their comrades in the air within 45 minutes. Also rumbling down the runway at Rygge Air Force Base, some 300 kilometers further to the east, an Air Force E-767 Argus AWACS scrambled to help the sister Argus flying over the Skagerrak strait that seperated Norway and Denmark monitor the situation and control a potential air battle. The Air Force were also preparing to scramble air superiority fighters of the type F-77A Kovas, the definitive air superiority fighter and the last product produced by the Dat Pidzy Arms Corporation of Soviet Bloc before that great nation crumbled, and brand new multirole fighters of the type F-58A Viper, recently delivered by the Layartebian Defence Corporation to replace the old F-16 warhorses.

The plan the Cottish air defence forces would follow was one that was drilled into their heads time and time again: Three lines of defence would be created, consisting of F-14E Tomcats far out over the North Sea to meet the attackers, a second line of F-77A Kovas fighters near the Cottish coastline, and a third line of F-58A Viper fighters over Cottish land. Between the second and third line were the Argus AWACS, which would retreat back to behind the third line if the first line proved insufficient to stop an attack. If the attackers managed to get to the third line, ground-based air defences would join the battle and the Air Force and Navy would scramble everything they had to meet the attack head-on.

As per now, the Cottish F-14E Tomcats were racing at full afterburner to get to a holding position 180 nautical miles off the British isles, some 110 nautical miles off the Norwegian coast. The EP-8C was falling back to this distance, and would remain there until ordered to either return to station, or return to base.

As the fighters raced through the black night and the Cottish Chancellor realized why he had been rudely awakened (the alarm that the country might be under attack soon), CIS were closely monitoring the situation in real-time. Hopefully, additional info would be available soon.

Scafell Pike Approach, before operations in Newcastle

Amidst the rugged landscape that featured the way to the third tallest summit of Britain, forty shadows moved through different directions, all featured by their extremely unwelcome nature, being far from the closest roads that a normal traveller would take, particularly dangerous by the fact it was already night, and by the thick snow of the winter, with the freezing cold. Camouflaged under the colors of the mountain and snow and equipped with climbing utils and night vision goggles and gun sights, the shades, split in ten groups, continued to advance towards the largest of the three summits of the mountain chain. A Large spotlight could be seen at it, with enough power to brighten the areas through which the shades advanced, if its operator knew of their presence.

Matt Stuttham stared at the greeny flash of distant spotlight, the beacon to the goal they had to reach. Fort Scafell it was called, although it was anything but a Fort, being a deeply underground military base connected with a network of hedge defenses across the entire mountain chain, which depth was completely unknown, being possibly deep enough to be beyond the reach of bunker busters, or not. The wrongly called Scafell "Line" extended all the way from the west to the neighborhood of Newcastle to the East. It was built as a powerful line of defense against a hypothetical invasion of Britain, before the Goodrule even existed. Perhaps such fact made it ironic for the fact those who believed the Goodrule was an illegitimate government were now heading to take control over it. As no immediate threat of an amphibious assault by Layartebian forces existed, although the base was at alert, not being a coastal base, and due to the heavy and intermeshed coverage of radars surrounding the entire island, the base was currently not at alert, and not mobilized for an imminent attack.

Matt knew that he had a schedule. He pressed hard, his handpick crushing the cold rock of the mountain to aid his struggle. It was ironic in his mind, how he was supposed to be defending such a place instead of attacking it. Once he was part of a Mountain Troop of the legendary Special Air Service, and now he walked with ex Royal Marines and ex SAS types specialized in mountain warfare to take control of such critical defensive line.

It was foolish, perhaps, to attempt seizing a base where the personell outnumbered them at more than ten to one, and without any heavy armaments, like mortars and heavy machineguns that could be particularly useful for such an offensive. But captain Stuttham remained confident about the success of such risky approach. He was after all, going to meet with some old friends, and Matt wasn't a man who liked to kill his friends.

"This better work. I don't really like Plan B, and we don't have the manpower right now for it." when he finally went through another slope, he thought, "hopefully everyone here truly knows how to hide as spetacularly as they know how to shoot. The real trick will be to bypass everything and reach the General's private quarters to have a private conversation with my old friend. I am not sure if I could manage that, but I don't have the option to give up really."

The plan was at paper simple: to distract the garrisson of the base through a diversionary attack, which would be executed in a way to intentionally provoke as little casualties as possible, while Matt's fireteam would help him infiltrate the base by himself through a large ventilation area they were already aware of, having served in such base once, and then he would sneak through the base and get to the General, hopefully managing to persuade him to defect and join their cause, for Matt knew the General stationed there wasn't really loyal, he only pretended to, as a matter of survival. Perhaps it was chance or luck, but the family of the General died during the previous civil war, and thus there was nobody that would be harmed by his defection.

However, the General was a pragmatic man. To convince him to put his Corps in service of the cause of freedom, Matt would truly have to prove him that they had a solid chance of winning in this conflict. It wouldn't be easy, but certainly not as difficult as being unseen while travelling through the base. Although the central ventilation shafts that brought air from the outside world to the base were large enought to fit several men inside, the ducts spread around the base were barely tall enough for rats to scuttle through them. The entire base was constructed to prevent such a thing, and a biohazard protection system would seal off the base if he tried the old trick of spreading a tranquilizer gas through the ducts. Not that they could carry enough gas to knock out the entire base in the first place. Thinking outside the box would be fundamental to succeed.

Once distant, now the spotlight seemed far closer, while silently Matt took cover with the rest of his team behind a slope. It has been a difficult and dangerous, but successful journey so far. Everybody knew what to do. Soon the go code would fly over the skies and announce they should make preparations to head towards the ventilation shaft. Its position, inside a small but mazelike cave, which also blocked its sighting through satellite, was nearly impossible to be spotted by those who never staffed such base. Such knowledge was the only thing that made such risky operation possible, a precious knowledge that had to be put into practice once. There was no sentry around, easily spotted, for if there was one, he would give away the fact something important lied there.

The wait was unnerving. The spotlight beam sometimes went very close to their sheltered location, while they calculatedly remained steadfast. Matt began to feel an urge to smoke a cigarette, which he tried to suppress, aware of how now it was to worst time ever to have such an urge. It was a reflection of how, no matter how he prepared for a moment like this, he was still not completely calm about this operation. He knew the layout of the base, and it was likely they didn't change much it, for the Goodrule certainly went with the "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" approach regarding what they inherited from the previous government of Britain. The General quarters, expectingly, were among the farthest areas from the practical means of entrance possible, although Matt wondered if there was some sort of emergency exit for the General. If it did exist, now it wouldn't make a difference. The entire Scafell "Line" was worse than the labyrinths of caves in Afghanistan for those who didn't know where to find something in it.

Then at last, the skies began to be lightened by tracer ammunition, the signal that it was now the moment to proceed. Quickly, gesturing to his team to cover him and follow, Stuttham began to carefully advance towards the cave, seeing it as a sea of green, where seemingly no human besides his comrades were. He took cover behind a small stalagmite, while moving away carefully and quickly, leaning through it, to provide cover for his other men to move. He could already listen to the large blades of the fan moving.

It was training, for an enemy could be inside such cave, which despite not big, was still a mazework in its own, and at anywhere they could be waiting, ducked and awaiting to surprise them. Carefully scanning everything, the team made its advance through the dark chambers of such labyrinth of tunnels, until finally standing next to the large duct. A steel grating lied there, and there weren't many security measures, apparently, other than the fact it was impossible for an invader to know its location beforehand.

They carefully cutted the grate off, and opened the cover, with all of them raising it at once. The fan was now exposed, and it was a hazardous entryway. There was only one way to get down safely. Equipped with grappling gloves, Matt climbed next to the metallic chasm blocked by the moving blades, as he looked down. They could hear the muffled sounds of battle happening, and knew the others wouldn't hold out forever. However, even then, the question came, a very important question:

"Matt, are you really ready for this? Are you sure that you can convince General Stuart to join our cause?"

"Yes," he answered, while they placed a long iron rod against the fan to stop it temporarily, "only I can and should do this. And you, once I get down, I want you to get out of here. There is nothing else you can do after that."

"Are you sure? What it if it doesn't work, you won't have anyone watching your back them."

"If it doesn't work, I won't be alive to need someone watching my back, so just go away to a safe place." Matt answered. Those were his last words to his men before jumping at the large duct, towards one of its walls. When his hands finally touched the all again, sticking to it, he began to carefully climb it down, using his gloves, while the fan above him returned to normal, with the rod removed. Whether such attack by stratagem would work or not was something yet to be seen.

Athlone Air Force Base - 00:15 hrs [GMT]
Athlone, Ireland

Darkness was over Athlone and so was a sense of quiet. The air force base just outside the city was dark except for perimeter lights and the usual, runway lights, nothing out of the ordinary. Randomly, throughout the course of the night, the lights would go on and off around the runways and they had done so now for weeks. It was just another form of military deception that the Layartebians employed. However, on this particular evening, it was done by careful design. Athlone was a front in the potential fight against the Goodrule Third Spanish States and it had been for the entirety of the Third Spanish States. Athlone was home to one hundred and thirteen aircraft and it had one only runway, a four thousand, two hundred, and seventy-five meter behemoth that was built to support the Condor. Because of its strategic position, many Condors were based at Athlone. As such, it was more of a logistics base than a fighter base and this was no secret to the world. Of its one hundred and thirteen aircraft, sixteen were tankers, fifty-one were reconnaissance, twelve were bombers, thirty-two were UAVs, and two were special platforms. That gave it twelve B-9Ds, eight KC-10Bs, eight KC-26Es, sixteen MQ-9As, sixteen MQ-1Bs, sixteen RQ-4As, six RQ-4Bs, two A-26Cs, two E-12Gs, sixteen RA-5Es, eight EC-21Ds, and three RC-26Js. Tonight, its number would be increasing by twelve and all in total secrecy. The airbase would play host to twelve of the newest aircraft produced by the Layartebian Defense Corporation. The product of over a decade of development, testing, and production, the MQ-18A Firefly II had finally entered operational service and all in total secrecy, more so than any other aircraft out there and there were several aircraft that the public still had no clue even existed, let alone foreign governments. The MQ-18A Firefly II was a UCAV, designed based on two principles, stealth and security. Costing eighty million dollars each, the LDC had been contracted to build one hundred and sixty-four of them. The production lines were moving quite well and the aircraft had been tested without knowledge that anyone ever knew it existed.

The MQ-18A Firefly II used technology off the Bird of Prey, X-45, X-47, F-117, F-19, and so on and so fourth. Every stealth aircraft the LDC had produced, to date, paved the way for the MQ-18A Firefly II. They resembled miniaturized B-2 bombers, utilizing the tailless, flying-wing design. The aircraft was thirty-nine feet long with a forty-nine foot wingspan, and a height of eight feet. They were small, very small. Eighteen thousand five hundred pounds empty, they could carry nine thousand pounds of fuel and another nine thousand pounds of ordinance. Their maximum weight was thirty-six thousand, five hundred pounds, lighter than an F-16 Fighting Falcon and much smaller. They were powered by a single, LDC-AE-30B non-afterburning, turbofan engine that was routed through a special system in the fuselage that diluted its hot, exhaust gases with the cold, outside air, thus reducing its infrared signature to be as cold as the outside air, just like the B-2. The engine only provided seven thousand pounds of thrust, enough to make the aircraft maneuverable and conserve fuel but not enough to get it faster than Mach 0.85 at altitude. It climbed at twelve thousand, five hundred feet per minute and could fly as high as seventy thousand feet. It needed just eighteen hundred and fifty feet to take off and half that to land. Unrefueled and without ordinance, it could fly three thousand miles. With ordinance it could fly only fifteen hundred miles. That was more than enough range. The Firefly II held its ordinance in two, internal bomb bays that had the same doors as the F-22, which snapped open and released a weapon quickly, which made it possible to release ordinance without raising its radar signature about -70DBsm or 0.0000001 m² making it as stealthy as the Bird of Prey. In its internal bays, it could carry up to four two thousand pound bombs and bombs were preferable since they could be dropped without noise or infrared energy. The Firefly II, while a UCAV, had a highly advanced avionics set that used an advanced EOTS in the form of the AN/AAQ-40(V)-1 AMAS but also had a millimetric wave radar, the AN/APG-86(V)-2 NGMMWR. It had a powerful ECM suite, the AN/ALQ-240(V)-10 MEJS and sixty chaff bundles and sixty flares. It could maneuver through -4Gs and +10.5Gs.

Throughout the night, as the lights at the base went off, just as they had been doing for months now, the twelve aircraft landed, coming in low and slow, taxiing instantly to hangars before the lights ever went back on, before anyone could see. The aircraft had taken care to avoid radar sites as they flew towards Ireland, even avoiding the Empire's own sites. The transit of the twelve aircraft was another training mission. If they could stay hidden from their own radar sites, they could stay hidden from the enemy. It wasn't hard to do though. It would require more than a megawatt to detect the Firefly II past ten nautical miles using S band and much more power if the bandwidth was increased. VHF could detect it with a megawatt using just 30MHz at fifty nautical miles but any site that emitted was bypassed with more than enough room to spare. If the shit hit the fan, the Firefly II could fly deep into enemy territory, drop its bombs, preferably in a decapitation strike, and get out before it could be detected.

Spy movies are not really very realistic. Most ventilation grates for one never could fit a human being inside, and the way such movies are not realistic is in the fact sneaking inside a real military or intelligence facility would be significantly more difficult than what fiction suggests. Fortunately though, Matt reached a deep enough into the base, a place where nobody expected anyone to ever be able to infiltrated, and thus a place which lacked security cameras everywhere, and besides, when a base is being attacked from the outside, internal security usually would be thinned as everyone able would rush in its defense. Still, he had to be careful. When he finally climbed down the large duct pumping air into the underground base, he knew it would be a particularly delicate moment. There was no other way to go, the ducts were too small for him to fit into and there was no grating below him. Taking a drill machine, he made a hole in the middle of the duct's bottom metal and attached a bolt to it with a short but sturdy chord. Then grabbing a welder, he wore a mask to protect his face as he slowly began to weld his way down open, hoping there was no soldier right below him.

When finally the metal was separated from the duct, he stood at his tiptoes and grabbed the chord holding the plate to avoid it from making a significant amount of noise by falling over the floor below. He then tied the chord tightly to one of the grates of the smaller ventilation shafts the main duct was connected to, ensuring the piece he took from the bottom wouldn't fall, and carefully began to climb down to the military base, and that it wouldn't be dangling from the ceiling to be easily spotted either.

"No, you didn't change the layout!" he thought to himself as he began to look for the nearest writings on the wall that could guide him. The door leading to a room was titled as "Archive #1", and from its inner windows, he could see another person opening a secondary door to it, as he quickly crouched and began to sneak away, to prevent being seen

"Bureaucrats, their workplace is under attack and they still don't change." Matt amused himself with the thought, as he finally entered in a junction between two corridors, and saw the words. Nothing has changed, and the base commander's room still was to the left, after a long winding corridor and several wings of offices with civilian contractors, as he predicted. Carefully, always watching everything around him, he began to walk towards the corridor, with extra care about the inner windows, always checking for whoever could be leaving one of the offices, and keeping his ears very open for the first sounds of footsteps besides his calculatedly muffled ones, leaning in corners to avoid the most predictable patrols that he expected to be there

He was halfway through when he heard footsteps his carefully planning didn't predict, as he was in a T-shaped intersection with another wing of the base. He began to ponder on what to do, as he identified they coming from the other wing. If he went ahead and the person was going at the same direction than him, it would be over, and vice-versa, therefore, there was nowhere safe to hide, because all adjancent rooms had people inside them he did his best to avoid letting them spot him, and he began to become very worried, he knew it was necessary to make a decision soon.

Matt watched as a soldier walked right below him, his climbing gloves attached to the ceiling and his feet touching the walls to keep his balance, as he held his breath, tensely. He carefully observed as the man headed on the opposite direction he was heading to, and felt an alleviation when he realized he didn't notice him. Cautiously, he got down again, and continued to sneak through the tapestry of the corridor. It was a good thing the ventilation gave him a very good shortcut, for otherwise doing this would be ninety-nine percent impossible. There was one twist to the left before the commander's room, and, as a cautious man, Matt used a very tiny mirror to check over it, laying prone over the ground.

"As I feared, a guard next to the door." he already expected it. He looked around the offices to find anything of use, when he noticed that at the second office door to his left, the bureaucrat seemingly was having a short break in what he assumed to be a politely concealed "snack area" with a fridge behind the bookcase. Carefully, he approached that office's door, and began to very slowly open its handle, to avoid making too much noise. Inside, he observed the bookcase as he got an idea. Carefully, he grabbed his rifle, and placed its stock to the side of the bookcase. Then he yanked the rifle, pulling the bookcase down, and quickly, returned back to the corridor, closing the door. Repeating the same move he did before, he thanked for such a tall ceiling that made it possible, hiding exactly at a ceiling spot before the turn of the corridor to the commander's room.

Right as his feet touched the walls close to the ceiling, the doorguard passed over him to investigate the noise. When he was far enough, about to open the door, Matt quickly got down again, and approached the Commander's room. He pulled his hand towards the handle, and began to turn it, when finally another problem came.

"Locked, this is why we plan for worst-case scenarios." he didn't waste time, grabbing a lockpick he carried for such occasions, and he began to pick the lock to that door, exploiting the noise of the amusing arguing between the doorguard and the leisurely bureaucrat, who tried to explain he didn't drop the bookcase, as a mean to cover up the sounds of his clandestine break in.

"Come on!" he tried to keep himself calm, knowing that becoming nervous would hinder his attempt to pick it, but he could perceive the arguing was about to come to an end and soon the guard would return to his post. He felt the tumblers slowly giving up, and knew he was close.

The door gave in almost at the same time the cover up for his noise ended, and he immediately got inside the room and closed the door. The commander's room, as he expected, was particularly nostalgic, built like the indoors of a house in the sixties. It was too abstract of a subversion, but Matt knew that such design, the hula dancer, the lava lamps were simply signs of the once free society the commander actually wanted to see back, but his instinct for survival spoke louder than his beliefs. He only remained loyal out of fear than anything.

He was there, sitting on his comfortable chair, with a depressive mood, and headphones, likely listening to an old music from times past. He sat next to a desk, where photos of his family lied. Matt was aware of what he to be done, and he felt terrible for it, for such man once was one of his comrades, a personal friend. But it was necessary, and he couldn't risk letting him sound the alarm.

He acted quickly, and soon the headphone touching the old commander's ear was replaced by the muzzle of a P70 pistol Matt held, as he covered the commander's mouth to avoid him screaming and whispered to his other ear:

"Stay quiet, don't sound the alarm, all I want to do is to talk with you, in private, without anybody hearing."

The commander nodded, visibly scared, but Matt knew this was not going to be easy. Convincing a high-ranking man to betray his military was one of the most difficult things ever, specially for a cause that most saw as hopeless. But it was their only chance of establishing a foothold of liberty. It was necessary, but it would be the most difficult attempt to convince someone of doing something Matt ever had done in his entire life.

Battle of Scafell Pike

The attack was supposed to be nothing but a diversionary strike. Positioned all around the entrance to the base, with every fireteam packing suppressed weaponry to difficult tracking the origin of their fire, and heavier ordnance once such advantage was lost. Their faces shivered from the cold winter, the ice went up to their knees before they crouched and dug positions through the mountain and ice. It wouldn't take much longer.

Aaron Nolan looked through the scope of his RFDA-BS rifle at a target. It was just a boy, probably just made eighteen years old recently, he watched with calculating care, to take down when nobody was looking and buy them some time. He simply didn't think on moral, ethics, his finger pressed the trigger and the young soldier's leg was severely wounded, and he collapsed over the ground, while a muffled sound and no muzzle came from his weapon. He cautiously looked for another target, but the soldier screams would soon be accompanied by a hallowed siren.

"Damn it! This don't shoot to kill! We're going to be toasted because of it." Aaaron thought as cautiously, the base personell crouched and crawled towards the sandbags and heavy machinegun mounts surrounding its main entrance. Hopefully the jamming device would work in cutting off communications of the base with the rest of the Goodrule, or they would definitively become toasted.

It was a strange battle. scouts began to shift through the base outskirts, one of them would eventually be taken down in a non-lethal but painful way, the base personell would taunt the invaders, calling them coward and inferior. Perhaps a sign of desperation. The number of wounded increased every few seconds, and searching for a handful of scattered men at a radius of three hundred meters around the base entrance, in the middle of such snowy mountain and so many jagged grounds, was anything but simple, when combined with soldiers being taken down. The heavy machinegun positions stood, manned, ready to slaughter such offensive. The local NCO probably concluded it was nothing but a hit and run attack, that whoever was doing this lacked the manpower to truly assault the base.

Eventually the enemies were so close, that Aarron removed the scope from his suppressed rifle, and unfolded its iron sights. Twelve empty magazines lied on the snow, and eventually he would run out of ammuntion, and have to rely at his pistol or at a non suppressed FA-65. Then, suddenly he saw it. a white figure flying through the sky, the drone would definitively spot them sooner or later. He had to shoot all snipers from the base on his sight, but now it would be difficult.

"Shit!" he loaded the last 7.62x54mmP magazine into his rifle. He was alone, scattered, by his own, they split themselves to difficult detection, close enough to provide covering fire for those close, but far enough to have to rely on their own skills as well. His closest ally was a hundred and further few meters away. Crouched at the improvised foxhole dug from the snow, Aaron wondered how Matt was going. He had to succeed, or otherwise they would stand no chance. It was luck the UAV didn't spot him yet. He knew a few of them have died already, somehow. Things better change soon or he would die, and everyone else would, in vain. They shifted positions carefully when opportunities to do so without being detected came

Always expect the worse. Always. Suddenly he heard the sound of treads trudging through the soil and ice coming from behind. It took not long for him to shift his position and lay prone, hoping that the thick layer of snow all around him would hide him, for there was nothing else he could do, for he didn't have any anti-tank weaponry, they knew there was a small armored brigade attached to this military facility, but they didn't expect it to be so expedient. The ground vibrated slightly, tilting his head to the side, he could see the top silhouette of the tank turret, as it passed through, very close to him. His training was naught, for he still could feel the dread from such vehicle being so close, with only five meters separating him from it. It was a Sino1M, a relatively lightweight tank for modern standards, adapted for snowy and mountainous terrain, and very difficult to be detected compared to most.

"Think, think!" the tank turret began to rotate towards his direction. He should have guessed. He couldn't hide his presence from thermal sights. Quickly, he slowly grabbed his RFDA-BS rifle and attempted to aim at the apparently not yet used machinegun mount on the top of the turret, hoping to damage it permanently. It was a hit or die moment. The bullet flew towards the machinegun, and perhaps by sheer luck, it damaged its circuitry as he aimed for, disabling the only ROWS of this vehicle. He grabbed a HEDP grenade from his belt and quickly ran towards the tank rear while its turret continued to rotate towards his direction. Suddenly machinegun fire began to fly towards him from the base, he kept his head down and simply ran, aiming for his goal. Instinctively, he raised his pistol above, as expectedly, a man opened the turret's hatch and tried to shoot him down with a SF-27 submachinegun. He went back inside the tank with a bullet in his head.

Pulling the pin, Aaron tossed the compact grenade inside the exhaust port of the tank and run at the opposite direction of the tank's firing. Tracer bullets flew ahead of his sight, while he trudged through the ice, he did his best, he ran as fast as he could.

Then it just came, quick, a sharp razor. Aaron collapsed with his back over the snow, as a bullet tore through his torso. He began to feel a combination of pain and numbness. He saw the explosion, the tank engine blew up, it did work, despite being completely suicidal, it did work. He saw men coming out of the tank, bringing the only one who died among them. They survived the explosion, bullets flew near Aaron, his sight became dizzy. Then suddenly, everything stopped.

The alarm sound was gone, the firefight ended. The tracers stopped flying ever so close to Aaron's body covered in snow. He felt alleviated, while he tried to foolishly grasp for air. He knew it, from the difficulty to breath, the heavy bullet went straight through his lung. He knew he was going to die there, but at least, it would not be in vain. Eventually, he succumbed as darkness bid him welcome. Scotland could yet be touched by freedom.

Epilogue

A month has passed since the revolution started. dozens of thousands of lives, both innocent and monstrous, have been claimed by the revolutionary war that erupted through the entire Goodrule. Catalonia and Scotland has been the two most successful territories for the freedom fighters operations, where all Goodrule influence was lost, however, in Catalonia, with the element of surprise lost, the Goodrule prepared for a massive offensive. Entire towns were levelled with daisy cutters and other conventional but highly destructive bombs for rebelling against the Goodrule, until the first defectors from the Air Force came. Men refused to obey orders to bomb the towns where their very families lived, and due to the reaction, the Air Force was the most affected by massed defections. Nearly a quarter of the Goodrule Air Force switched sides after one month of total war. Radar facilities were captured, the conflict began to shift gradually from irregular to regular. The Navy however, remained almost entirely loyal, with a handful of nuclear submarines defecting to the other side. Part of the Goodrule missile silos was now under control of the rebels. Scotland however, after a harsh winter battle through its mountainous landscape was secure, with a front line that stretched from Newcastle to the Scafell Pike defining the British Front of this conflict.

It became clear that the only reason this didn't happen before was that the people have lost their hope. And it became clear that powerful forces played behind the scenes for a long time to provoke this event of unforeseen proportions. The Goodbrother would become desperate, no matter how the rebels lacked enough force to launch an offensive. And a desperate despot would go through all means possible to not lose his power. His power lied in fear and hopelessness of the conquered.

The Goodrule simply reacted to foreign interest with complete diplomatic silence, as the creator of a surveillance society, the Goodrule gave a significant focus to electronic warfare, and followed with a new tactic, to create a new curtain, an electronic curtain that would isolate them from the rest of the world and their electronic espionage attempts. When reports of spy drones coming were made, EC-32 Cuervos took off from the skies together with the Churchill AEW&C aircrafts, and coupled with several specially built towers, began to jam all possible frequencies, essentially cutting off foreign signals from ever reaching or leaving the territories they still had under their control. Such sorties had a great cost, but the Goodbrother seemed to ignore such fact. The message was clear that they didn't want meddlers in such conflict. Resorting on allies would demonstrate weakness. Instead, they had to prepare for a crippling offensive, to retake Scotland. But all indicated Catalonia would be the first target, due to its weaker ground defenses. The Catalonians apparently had a different agenda from the Scottish revolutionaries, but knowledge was still sketchy at best, except for the yellow and black bissected flags that waved over the city of Barcelona.

It could be seen everywhere. In the city of Thurso, for example, there was once a facility, where all able-bodied men and women were being drafted and trained hastily to fight against a possible Layartebian invasion. Cobwebs littered the abandoned place, cameras were broken, completely vandalized, and the entire place had the looks of a place that long ago was visited by a mob of unruly teenagers seeking to wreak havoc for the sake of fun. It could be almost comical how there was toilet paper drapped through the place, and the mess, were it not for the decapitated and dismembered corpses that were spread through the place. They had the same fate of those who caged ferocious animals for long, but allowed for them to escape from their bonds and seek vengeance, the fury of the oppressed was beyond control, when finally all communications and surveillance systems blacked out, while militias stormed the police and government buildings, murdering all directly involved with secret police activities and liberating those who were yet not transferred to death camps in the Mediterranean isles.

Where once the Goodrule flag waved, a new flag now stood. A simple, black flag. The message was clear to the world, for eventually a satellite would photograph the ruins of former Goodrule administrative buildings, filled with graffiti. Where the black banner stood, the Goodrule was defeated. However, the marks of war were everywhere. Many aircraft wreckages haven't yet been cleared. The wreckage of one Luddite blocked one of the city streets, anti-air batteries were placed over all strategic areas.

Through the last months, some of the greatest air battles seen in the history of the British Isles have occurred. It has been a fierce battle, with hundreds of aircrafts downed. It was brilliant. The rebels exploited the element of surprise perfectly, and against all odds, were now on the way to achieve air superiority in Scotland, having already achieved air parity. Some of the best Air Force commanders were not among the most loyal, for there was an obvious bias for the sycophants in the Goodrule, where competence wasn't always the first thing to be considered in promotions.

Naval terror strikes against coastal cities were still going on, but Scotland was almost solidly in anarchist hands, for now. Corporations have been taken over by revolutionaries, CEOs and overall suits accused of being collaborators were ruthless murdered. There was no mercy, no quarter. Freedom came with a cost to be paid in blood, lives and innocence. Most likely, many could see an advantage in this conflict. Greedy foreign eyes stared at one of most industrially developed territories of the world, once the homeland of a great power which has been in decline.

The failure to provoke a war between the Goodrule and Layarteb has been after all, a blessing. The greatest instrument of the Goodrule, more powerful than even fear and hopelessness, was the use of a common enemy. The events of this last month have proven truly that for societies built upon the dehumanization of man, a paradox was true: there would be no peace without war. A war against Layarteb would have ruined everything those who still had hopes of a free world struggled for. The conflict now seemed to be ending in a standstill in the British Front, perhaps this could lead to new conflicts and events.

The diplomatic silence that both sides have kept during this conflict however, was about to be broken. A new turning point was about to begin.

(OOC: Essentially, I'm closing off this thread. I'll be starting several split threads about different events and fronts related to this conflict later, including the statement from the side that is going to break the diplomatic silence)
