Minimum (that are not really that bad) Medium (somewhere between a UK and US prison in nastyness) Maximum (very unpleasent) and Supermax for those who attack prison officers (23 hours a day in a cell with only a few books and a small radio for entertainment.) And for murderers, Death Row.

There are no prisons. If somebody does wrong they are either simply put to death or used as test subjects for incredibily painful experiments.

Prison for Minimum and Medium class offenders is in the form of a "re-education camp" where good food, easy work and conjugal visits are utilized.

Max and Supermax are held in SkyPrison 10 and SkyPrison 11, 1000 meters above Mount Damavand. There is also a "Death Row" for the most incorrigible of evils, on the Pedestal Prison, 1400 feet above sea level, 38 miles east of Yazd.

Upon execution, the condemned's body is sent to RPS Dakhma, where all prisoners' bodies are sent to be picked clean by vultures and the elements...

prisoners in totalise are treated as bearly though more often then not less then human. they have no rights political or other wise (not human). many are used in medical and military expariments with the vain hope of getting better conditions in which to live or a reduced sentance.
the military takes "voluntiers" to be used as terror or special expendiable unites.

Prisons are privately owned, subcontracted by the state to process convicts and making profits through the prisoners' work and various small businesses they run, or by contracting prisoners (mostly willing ones, and they usually receive various incentives like bonus rations or small wages) to do labor in other companies; often the company that owns the prison doesn't work solely in the prison sector, and will use the prison as a pool from where to draw future willing employees who'd have problems finding jobs elsewhere.

Since all prisons are owned by different companies the conditions vary, although there is a minimum line that is expected from all prisons - decent living conditions (not every prison is expected to have wi-fi internet access and HD television, of course, but certain amenities are required and certain sanitary requirements must be met), there must not be any abuses of prisoner labor that could be considered outright slavery, and the prisoners must not be deliberately abused by the staff.

While most Herdite prisons do not exactly resemble five-star hotels, the conditions are fairly comfortable. Even the 'one-star' cells are relatively cozy if a bit spartan, the food is generally good (often prisons make deals with fast-food chains) and the prisoners have plenty of time for exercise, business or work (for which they are modestly paid, as was said above), sports, counsel, recreational and creative activities (selling prisoners' paintings to creepy private collections is quite profitable). Prisoners have access to television, separate toilet cubicles, sports facilities and often even computers with limited internet access.

The Herd does not see the need in "breaking" the prisoners with abuse, terrible living conditions and slave labor. Our prisons' focus on dialogue with the convicts, rehabilitation and providing them with choice and initiative stems less from "hippie crap" like kindness and compassion that every citizen is entitled to, but more from pragmatism: a rehabilitated, of balanced mind, ex-prisoner will be easily re-introduced in the society, find a job and start making wealth and paying taxes, while a "broken", dehumanized ex-convict is much less likely to make healthy contributions to the society.

Our prisons are oriented towards rehabilitation. They aren't "pleasure resorts", as some people think. There are incentives (more spending money) to spend one's time working.

Vigilante justice (community justice, really) is the norm. Punishment for crimes are pretty varied, really, and it depends on what the community decides to do. Maybe they figure they'll just take all your stuff until you realize that taking stuff is bad, or maybe they'll force you to go to therapy/rehab, or maybe they'll lock you in a freshly-made prison, or maybe they'll just repeatedly execute you until you grow a brain that realizes crime is bad. Permanent execution, however, is not something that communities are allowed to perform. If your crime is heinous enough to get the attention of the Celestial Court, well, there's two possibilities. The first is that you die. Permanently. The second is that the Goddess of Pain gets a new plaything for a while. If you're lucky, she decides not to do anything and you shit yourself in fear for the duration of your sentence (after which you probably never hurt a fly). If you are slightly less lucky, you receive intermittent bouts of light torture from Pain's acolytes, and between them you shit yourself in fear.

If you're unlucky, Pain herself makes an abstract sculpture from your vivisected, still-living body and leaves you like that until your time's up.

Our nation has no prisons. What we try to do is re-integrate criminals into society. We put them on special residences where they are not treated like kings, but they are not treated as in a prison either and we teach them that their actions were bad and we hire psychologists to help them out.

So far we have witnessed more rapes going on to female staff and other things so we may implement prisons or other harsh punishments, but we would like to keep it this way if we can, although we'll see how that goes.

No prisons.... The punishments are so severe, there is no need for prisons. IE: you steal something small, you lose a finger; something of value, you lose a hand.... Rape, you lose your manhood and get branded on your forehead with a big "R".... Etc. Severe crimes usually get the death penalty, and depending on how horrific the crime determines how slow and horrific your death, but occasionally you get to live with the embarrassment and guilt. Unfortunately if you commit the crime again, the punishment will be far more severe. We try to eliminate crime by inducing fear of the possible consequences. No need to punish taxpayers with higher taxes to pay for prisons when the bullet only cost a few cents and is even cheaper as long as it gets repeated uses. ;)

The majority of prisons are run by the Type governments. Conditions can best be described as spartan; we aren't giving criminals loads of luxuries, but neither are we mistreating them. Construction is of course really solid considering the abilities of our people, and infantry energy shields developed for the military are being rolled out to prison guards for their safety.

Private ownership of prisons is not allowed, and nor is the use of prison labour. Such things get dangerously close to slavery as well as being unfair competition against businesses who pay their employees market wages. Yes prisons cost money to run, but it's money worth spending to keep dangerous individuals off the streets and deter future crime. If the cost of prisons becomes a political issue then something has gone very very wrong with our society that can't be fixed by discount justice.

For persistently violent prisoners, as well as those judged a grave escape risk (such as senior members of organised crime groups), we have the stardetainers: single-occupant fully automated prisons placed in military-controlled space, run by the UPT Space Force. Once in, the prisoner will have no interaction with anybody whatsoever until their release or death. The number of occupied stardetainers is not high.

Sidhae wrote:Imperium does not have prisons in the traditional sense. Detained criminals are only kept in a jail until trial (typically no longer than a month). Afterwards, they are most often sentenced to hard labour in one of Imperium's many penal colonies.

The labour camps that make up these colonies are graded by security levels, the higher levels being reserved for more severe crimes and repeated offenses.

Labour camps are invariably located on barely-habitable worlds with harsh and hostile environments. Unforgiving environment, hard and dangerous labour, poor nutrition and sadistic guards make even a low-security labour camp a place to be dreaded. Discipline is enforced severely, even the slightest infractions being punished with violent beatings and torture. In high-security labour camps, the conditions are deliberately engineered to ensure that no inmate survives his full term, and the few who do leave the place as physical and mental wrecks incapable of endangering society anymore.

Ah, another well-being nation using the same method as us. We only have one barely-habitable planet used as a prison. Your prison structure is quite interesting.

While we kept the brief republican government's drug rehabilitation programs, we have reinstituted the labor camp and re-education camp system. While prisons exist for those deemed unfit for the two former options, they are not used extensively for crimes if lesser nature. Only multiple counts of murder, one count of rape, gruesome and brutal assault, or supreme treason can land someone in a prison. Due to this nature, most of our prisons were modified to only cater to these types. As such, they're a pretty terrible place, and labor camps or re-education camps are far more appealing. Seriously though, they aren't that bad.

Prison is an... odd concept.

For one thing, a strong understanding of the sacrament of confession often necessitates pleas, which is neither here nor there, but the courts do occasionally convict people (and priests have the power to assign the same "sentence" as penance in certain cases, such as heinous crimes including rape, murder, and so on...). Once convicted of wrongdoing by a court, the conviction is made public and the convict is sent off - for this reason, it's believed (but unproven) that confession-sentences are more popular.

Persons convicted are sentenced to "contemplative retreat for a term of years" and sent to any of a number of monastic enclosures throughout the nation as Penitent Novices. These specially-secured facilities are essentially monasteries-within-monasteries, with escape generally being prevented by means of locks more than anything else.

Low-security retreats, such as Our Lady of Peace Monastery in Madana, feature the penitent brothers in common with the ordinary religious of the community, living a life of prayer, contemplation, and education. Low Security Retreats are universally Benedictine in management and, accordingly, Penitent Novices are given vocational and theological education at their own discretion and pace. In such an environment, each Novice would be assigned to a Brother as a spiritual guide and mentor. The low-security program leads to a very low recidivism rate and a relatively high post-incarceration employment rate. Cells are very comfortable, well furnished and lit, with those in good standing having ready access to newspapers, fiction and non-fiction literature, and personal bathing facilities. Standard furnishings include a small cupboard, a bed, a writing desk (usually directly beneath a window) with desk-lecturn, and a kneeler.

High security retreats are somewhat stricter in style - at present, only Saint Leonard of the Justice's Charterhouse exists to fit this description. The facility is remote even by our own largely-agrarian standards, situated on several hundred acres of otherwise undeveloped land, surrounded by forest. A Charterhouse of Carthusian Order Monks, the building itself is a walled-off common field consisting of two buildings of interconnected (but entirely segregated) hermitages, each with a covered walkway leading into a church on the premises. It was constructed several hundred years previously and reclaimed eighty years ago - it is not electrified nor is it ever likely to be.

The hermitages are constructed - both for the Brothers and the Penitent Novices - in such a way that none can be looked into from another, creating a sense of perfect isolation except at certain times when the community is gathered together. Hermitages have special amenities - including small, private gardens - and are two-story flats with a crowded bedroom, small Marian shrine and prayer area, and the lower floor being devoted to a workroom with stove and cistern. Meals and a daily rationing of water are delivered by means of a small crawlspace, which can only be opened at one end at a time.

In the complex of hermitages for penitant brothers, the main door, leading out into common areas, can only be opened from the outside. The high security system has a low recidivism rate, but is seen as being highly unsuccessful as a rehabilitation system, as prisoners in high security either become mentally damaged by the experience, cause themselves physical harm, or become permanent members of the community at Saint Leonard's in the majority of cases.

Living conditions are very basic and tedious. While there is some emphasis on reform, through teaching life skills and such, we find that making prison a place you don't want to be the best method of decreasing the re-offender population.

We have no prisons. You can't rehabilitate people to be productive members of society by locking them away from society.

In extreme cases, where an offender is considered too dangerous to be turned loose on the streets, it is possible to put him under house arrest - though nobody seems to remember a case where that was actually done. Even on house arrest, a person would be on the honour system. In extreme extreme cases, if there were any, an ankle bracelet might be provided to enforce the house arrest. We don't currently have an ankle bracelet but we could probably get one from the Internet if we needed one.
