Use Caseless ammo? Lighter or less armor, Probably a smaller caliber gun if Caseless isn't available

Standard issue post Vietnam was three 20 round mags, six if you were line infantry. I'm not sure how many mags were issued to in infantry - I remember something about it being 4 or 5 mags, but can't be sure - but on at least one occasion troops ran low on ammunition, had some dropped to them, ran over to the ammo tins and found that they needed to load individual rounds. This, IIRC, lead to more magazines being issued to combat troops.
I, personally, would issue five to seven 30 round magazines, plus 180 rounds or so on 10 round clips.
AK ammo is heavy ;_;
Especially if you use 150 gr bullets like me (apparently it improves the ballistics immensely.)

You'll be fine. Loaded AK magazine weight is ~1.8lbs when using steel, I believe. That's barely above ten pounds for six magazines. If you're using Bulgarian Circle-Ten polymer magazines, it will probably be ~7lbs or so, guessing (can't find weights for them readily). That is 180 rounds on-hand in loaded magazines.
I have a bent spine and I was okay with carrying seven AK magazines (when counting the rifle's), while also wearing full cold-weather gear. Not nearly as inclusive as a military, per se, but it was far more heavy than I typically go.

Except for once. But it was hot. So excusable.

I got an image in my mind of me packing around a spam can of 7.62 for an entire day, and just thinking about it makes my back hurt.

Good thing it's easy to maintain, because you can expect jams every magazine.

"Tiger Cub" select-fire carbine
Based heavily on the Dragunov SVD and firing a modification of the Lapua .338 round, this rifle can fire a round 1.6 kilometers (indirect) with an effective range of 850 meters in average conditions. The Tiger is semi-automatic but the carbine edition is capable of fully-automatic fire. With either a 16 or 23 round clip this rifle and its variants are able to serve many roles.
Weighing 25lbs loaded and constructed from machined steel the Tiger is Virtually indestructible, this added to the significant range and power of the weapon has helped reduce causalities among the unarmored Troopers.
In recent years a new version has been released, in 330 that includes wood hardware and a rifle grenade launcher but the classic Tiger is still being issued by the thousand.
