What is your opinion of the police?

I absolutely love the police and have an undying respect for them. They have saved my life twice now.

My only wish is that one day New Zealand arms the police - I am tired of these brave people being put on the front lines against scum armed with only some pepper spray and a tazer.

Personally, I think Michael Parenti summed it up nicely when he said their primary function wasn't necessarily to fight crime, but social control and the protection of property.

As with any other profession, some cops are assholes, some are great and upstanding members of the community, and most are somewhere in between. Except I think many people have a problem with the fact that a police officer has authority over them, fueling childish behaviour. Why do people complain so much? Would you rather have a soldier than a police officer?

The police here in Boston are OK. They might make the odd mistake here or there, or occasionally hassle people for things that are not really a big deal; but on the whole it is good to have them around. You really do need police officers to maintain order in cities.

The quality of police really does depend on where you are, though. When I was a kid, I knew Prince George's County, Maryland, was a shithole by the number of police brutality cases I heard about in the local news.

Obviously you haven't had any experience with Boston's Drug Control Unit. You will; regardless if you've ever even see an illegal drug, you will be accused at sometime in your future. White, black, or Purple, they're coming for you. My guess is you live in Southie or Charlestown, which means it's sooner rather than later for you!

Nope, never been involved with the Drug Control Unit. I've lived in Boston for several years already and it has not been an issue.

I have no problems with the police in New Zealand. My local constables are nice people who aren't generally threatening and respond very quickly to incidents. For example, on New Years, one of our cars was vandalised by some drunken youths and the police were up to the camp further up the road from us within five minutes of the call.

Yes, there have been some problems but I generally think the police are actually too criticised for their actions. Such as when a police chase ends in the death of a driver, the public blames the police. It's really quite annoying and I wish the public was a little less prone to acting like a bunch of unintelligent sheep.

You'll find dozens of cases about police brutality/abuse in the US, Canada, Australia, Greece, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, etc.

I'm not saying the majority of police officers in western nations are abusive, just that I don't get why you're astounded that people might hate Law Enforcement agencies

Also, the police are more efficient than the DMV or Postal Service, so that's another plus. Being a government institution that actually functions.

yes but people like that tend to not give a damn and seem to always do it again, cause if you actually cared about what was on your record you probably wouldnt do it in the first place. so why not have a little fun
