Where were there machine guns? Or Manchester?
EDIT: Actually, this may just be internet fools' gold, but I've seen maps showing Scotland pre-600 with that same waterway. I'm guessing it exists naturally then, and was made into a canal for later ships. luckily I'm using little canoes.

They were examples. That map does sound pretty amazing, though I'd be interested in how you work out waterways 1,400 years ago? You can't just remove canals, erosion and deposition and alll that shit has to be considered.
