The 7th Annual Edition of the Defender Awards, the longstanding and much-awaited event that rewards those who have served the defender world and celebrates Gameplayers' successes and failures of the last twelve months is here again!

The Awards are hosted by the Founderless Regions Alliance (FRA) on their forums, located here.

The awards are as follows:

The Defender of the Year Award

The formerly named 'EuroSoviets' award is given to the nation who is viewed by the NS community as the one nation who has helped the defender cause the most in the last year.

The Ananke Award

The Ananke Award is given to those nations who spend their own time looking out for any invasions that are taking place. This normally means staying up till very late and sacrificing their sleep for the greater good.

The Anarchotopia Award

This award is given to the region or organisation which has proved the most successful in preventing invasions.

The Blackbird Award

A special award that is given to the invader group which the NS community considers the best out there due to whatever reason.

The Sir Lans Award

The old 'Updater of the Year Award' is for the person who has been involved in more update missions than any other, and has shown dedication to be there if they are needed.

The Operation of the Year

The mission which stands out from all others from the last year due to the success, the numbers involved or any other reason.

The Best Newcomer(s) Award

Given to the region, nation or organisation which has appeared within the last year, and impressed the defender community the most. This award has two recipients.

The Dipes Award

Given to the nation whom has best served the Intelligence cause.

The Worst Invasion Award

The award given to the operation which was classed as the worst invasion due to defender mistakes, invader cunning or any other reason.

The Worst Invader Group Award

The award given to a group of Invaders for abysmal failure and/or being a large annoyance overall.

The Best Defender Quote

A light hearted award, given to the nation whose quote or motto has been considered strange, funny or different.

The Meltdown of the Year Award

Given to a nation, region or organisation which has self-imploded in spectacular (and often hilarious) style.

The WASC Award

Given to the nation, region or organisation that is viewed to have contributed most to the defender cause through the World Assembly Security Council.

The Lifetime Achievement Award for Dedication to Defending

The award given to the nation who has been a dedicated servant to the defender cause for many years, often sacrificing different luxuries in order to help as much as they can.

All - including invaders and neutrals - are welcome to attend.

Nice!

Are votes via telegram acceptable? If so, how would this work?

If Unibot/The UDL doesn't get the Meltdown award, I'm taking someone to Court.

:P
Never underestimate the power of cynicism, pessimism and negativity to prevent terrible things from happening. Only idealists try to build the future on a mountain of bodies.

The Thing to Remember About NationStates is that it is an almost entirely social game - fundamentally, you have no power beyond your own ability to convince people to go along with your ideas. In that sense, even the most dictatorial region is fundamentally democratic.

I think there's a decent chance I'll be getting that for my very public meltdown after TNI's invasion of Christmas, so kudos to you for that. If I do get it, it will be as much your award as it is mine. :P

A year from now, I hope to see the WA win this award. And depending on how much of an annoyance the UDL proves to be in my endeavors, I might be hoping the UDL makes a very close second. Have a happy 2013, Uni!

This is a remarkably swift turn of events after coming into the UDL's IRC channel so frequently to ask them when they might be able to liberate Ether.

Has it really been a year since the last one? Wow, lol.

Y'all better nominate one of my quotes from 2012 for the best quote. My ego balloon is floating dangerously close to the ground.

Yeah. The only reason I am naming the UDL here is because I know you guys will fight against my anti-WA agenda as much as you can. Oh, I am totally pro-defender when we are talking about the actions of TBR, TBH, TNI, and the other raiders, but when it comes to the WA I will do everything in my power to render it powerless - including make friends with raiders. However, if defenders don't get in my way, there will be no need to join with raiders. Trust me: you do not want raiders to be my friends. If I ever make friends with an imperialist group, just be sure that world domination will be imminant. Let me bring down the WA without a fight, and regional sovereignty will not take a hit. I don't want to hurt regional sovereignty, and neither do you, and it is time to take this discussion elsewhere.

Please note that Ether is no longer a concern of mine, now that there is no real chance of getting it back.

This is a thread for discussing the defender awards, not a soapbox for your anti-WA views.

This year most controversies seem to revolve around The Worst Invasion Award ("The award given to the operation which was classed as the worst invasion due to defender mistakes, invader cunning or any other reason."), whose description has in past years allowed plenty of defender operations to get nominated and win too (arguably as they resulted in success for the other side).

The nomination of UDL's unwitting assistance to the coup in Osiris has led to: a) a sensible request to change the name of the award to make it clear that it's not only about invasions, b) a sudden influx of random nominations, including alleged "raids" on Christmas on part of TITO and UDL, and FRA's failed defence (because of lack of numbers) on Fluffy Bunny Town. yay mudslinging. :P

This year the Awards seem more confrontational too, mostly about stupid tit-for-tat. :(

You can't really cry about it when you've partaken in it.

Excited to see the results of it this year. :)

As a note, I wouldn't find UDL's actions in Osiris considerable for 'best invasion' considering that the Security Council (NK) of the region and the government's second in command (Quad) and acting military leader (Tim) all pressed for them to switch endorsements to NK instead of Georgie. Actually the guy that did the opposite and continued to endorse Georgie, Cormac Stark, was threatened with treason charges in Osiris. I don't think 'best invasion' really fits for those days actions. As a note, I -was- on vacation during that, so my information here is secondhand, but still. :/

I'd be utterly astounded if Unknown won the Blackbird award for the 3rd year running given the activity of other orgs- TBH is probably the one.

To be honest I think these Awards are just turning into a political bloodfest. TITO hijacking it to try to make UDL look bad, UDL snapping back and the usual suspects and FRA passive-aggressively ganging up against the UDL. When a lot of defenders in all of the organizations have worked quite hard to keep native communities safe this year, they deserve to be recognized and these Awards aren't giving them a proper backdrop to their recognition.

Since the FRA Administration has been fairly slow to respond to any changes, I think for next year I may construct a different Award ceremony with a different structure. Likely speaking, the Award ceremony will be more serious and have only awards for individuals and an organizational award for defending -- getting rid of the "invader" awards and "invasion" awards which are just being hijacked to use as a negative PR campaign against UDL, TITO and FRA.

The Award Ceremony shouldn't be this political, it should be a happy event to recognize good work from defenders. Which means, first, all the awards such be positive. Second, I'd like to see a more streamlined list of awards -- the FRA Awards have a lot of awards and a lot of them overlap and the people we'd suggest for each award are the same. Instead of areas of expertise look for qualities which are more general, perhaps awards for tenacity, leadership, innovation, ambassadorship (being a good ambassador for defenderism abroad -- someone who represents us well when the rest of us often act like squabbling children), integrity and being inspirational. I like these awards better because regardless of what an organizations does more of, defenses or liberations or detags, we can find tenacious defenders/liberators/detaggers or strong leaders, or innovators etc. But I also like this structure better because most people aren't going to fulfill most of the qualities, for example, some may be tenacious but not a strong ambassador (a hot-head with loose lips whose heart is the right place). On top of these awards, I would like to see the "Defender" award as the pearl of the awards maintained and a Lifetime Award.

Likewise, this Award structure would use some sort of run-off vote, instead of being first-past-the-post.
