Remember, 1 day in real life (RL) is equal to 4 days in the RP. That rule for time will only start in 1914 though, and for the time being, we are in 1913 indefinitely (until everyone sings up, chooses sides, etc.)

You can always telegram me if there are any questions, concerns, or mistakes to point out that you might have. Have fun guys, and remember, this doesn't have to be historically correct, so don't always try to make it that way! (Although yes, I would like the beginning of the war to be somewhat true to what actually happened, but we can talk about a cause for the war while we're in 1913)

Hey other countries, how do you think the war should be started? You can either respond by saying the historical way or you can tell us how you think it should start.

KINGDOM OF ITALY
June 30, 1913

The situation in Europe was most interesting. Years of tension was building between Germany and France, who was still angry at their loss in the Franco-Prussian War. And soon it seemed that a mere spark could set Europe ablaze. A hundred years since the terror that was Napoleon, Europe hasn't changed much. Germany may be formally united, but it was an alliance of various states during Napoleonic times. Austria and the Ottomans continued to bicker over land.

The real change was the unification of Italy. King Victor Emmanuel III was proud of his grandfather, who ended centuries of political strife and wars in the peninsula. Victor now faced some challenging decisions. Italy was technically part of the Triple Alliance. However, according to the Italian government, the alliance was more of a defensive pact. Italy was also drifting quickly towards alignment with France and the United Kingdom. It was troubling to see that Austria-Hungary, a former enemy of Italy, controlled land that Italy really wanted. If Austria and Germany wanted Italian support, Italy would need to be granted land.

With the hosilities between France and the German Empire, the Kaiser felt it was time to resolve their differences and attempted to make an allience with the French Empire. He also felt that Italy should be part of the allience, if one is made.

To: French Government
From: Kaiser Wilhelm II
We wish to burry that hatchet with your nation and make an allience with your nation. Please respond when possible.

To: Italian Governemnt
From: Kaiser Wilhelm II
We wish to have you as an ally. We will give you acces to 50 miles of land in our southern territory. Please respond when possible.

With this, Wilhelm was hopping that the two nations could become an unstoppable allience in war, when-ever it came to Europe. Wilhelm was aware that Europe was on edge, he was just waiting for the war to come along. If he had Russia on his side, he would become invincible. No, he couldn't try to make an allience with them. He didn't want to bring a country that large in to the picture. Russia was on edge as well. Marxists were protesting in Moscow and St. Petersburg. If Germany were to make an allience with Russia, it would only bring those Marxists in to his country. So, feeling that he shouldn't need to make allies with any other nation, the Kaiser just sat back and waited for France's response.

Belgium, felt that it seemed like everyone else in Europe was in an alliance but herself. Upon this realization, she decided to try to forge a new alliance, one with her old ally, the Netherlands.

To: The Netherlands
King Terrence of the Kingdom of Belgium

In honor of our age old alliance, one that goes back to the 17th century with our secession from Spain, we in the Kingdom of Belgium would like to remake our alliance. We feel that something evil is once again stirring in Europe, and we want to be ready for war at all times. Please send us your response when you receive our proposal, and we hope that we may once again stand side-by-side on the battlefield as allies.

P.S. Might we even form a join empire like Austria-Hungary? It is if you agree, of course.

The transition from a monarchy to a republic had not treated Portugal well. The royalists still sometimes clashed with the republicans, the church was angered by their total exclusion from the new government, and the economy was weaker than those of most other nations in Europe. President Manuel de Arriaga, the first elected leader of the Portuguese people, realized that his government would have to cling to the remnants of the once great empire and exploit the resources located within Portugal's overseas territories or face a full blown civil war as the disapproval of the government by rival factions reached dangerous levels. To remain in control of territories like Angola and Mozambique, de Arriaga's government had invested a reasonable portion of it's budget in developing a modern military. However, tensions were growing between the powers in western and eastern Europe and unfortunately Portugal's territories in Africa rested between the colonies of these powers. If a war broke out between these two factions de Arriaga realized that he would not be able to prevent both sides invading the colonies of Portugal to attack the other side. Even if he resisted the invasion with the full strength of his modern military, it would still not be enough. Portugal would have to establish an alliance with another, stronger, nation.

But would de Arriaga's government attempt to form an alliance with the western or the eastern faction?

Romania was in an interesting position - a large, somewhat backwards country, in a very strategic position, that was basically friends with everybody. This neutrality was best embodied by its new monarch, King Ferdinand I - born in Germany to a cadet branch of the Hohenzollerns, married to a British princess, baptized Roman Catholic, and raising his son as a Romanian Orthodox - he was all things to all people.

30 years ago, his uncle, Carol I, had signed a secret treaty with Germany and Austria demanding Romanian intervention if Austria were ever attacked. But that was a generation ago; since then, popular opinion had swung dearly towards the French, as the French had been major investors in Romanian modernization. As one of the few Orthodox nations in Europe, Romania also had a natural affection for the Russians, Bulgarians, and Serbians. Romania was also a dearly useful friend to court; it was the only place in Europe where there was any serious amount of natural petroleum. The rest had to be imported, often at fantastic cost and often through dangerous waters, from Africa, America, or Indochina.

But at the same time, Romania had its own causes for war. Despite having been part of Hungary and then of Austria for almost a thousand years, the eastern regions of Transylvania and Bukovina still had a large population of Romanians. Holding Transylvania would also close the indefensible "boomerang" of Romanian geography. There were also old claims to press on southern Dobrudja, currently belonging to Bulgaria, and Bessarabia, presently in the hands of the Russians.

Everyone a potential friend; everyone a potential enemy. Such a fiendish situation.

((OOC: Here we depart from history. Carol's supposed to die in 1914 and Ferdinand doesn't get his coronation until 1922, but I wanted Ferdinand to take over now in 1913 so we don't get the shift so suddenly.))

The old king, Carol I, was dearly beloved among his people for his tireless efforts to modernize (and, to a point, Germanize) Romania. The old man had ruled wisely and well, but his race was run and his time on this Earth was drawing to a close. Recognizing the exhaustion of old age, symbolized most keenly by the loss of his eyesight, Carol I elected at last to pass on the throne to his nephew, Ferdinand.

His coronation was in September of 1913. In a customarily Romanian show of thrift, the ceremony would not be so large or elaborate; in one engagement, old king Carol would speak that he would abdicate, and place his crown upon a cushion. Then the Patriarch would place it upon Ferdinand's own head, and he would be king. Then his wife would be made the Queen, his son Carol named Crown Prince, and all would be concluded. The crown itself, bizarrely, was made of steel, and had no gems; a token of fellowship to the common man. This was a coronation on the cheap, but that's how they always did things.

All the crowned heads of Europe, and its prime ministers and presidents, were invited.

With regards to an alliance with Germany, Romania's actions depend on those of Papa Russia. Romania can't fight Austria and Russia at the same time; if it's to fight one, it must be alongside the other.

King Alfonso sat in his study having a look over the Spanish map and reports of Europe. He sensed something building up, like a spark, whose fire will soon engulf Spain. He therefore, decided it was time to put the interest of Spain ahead. He was particularly friendly with Portugal but had a strong dislike for France. He decided to form alliances.

Ha ha... wait. I thought you said that your Alliance was to contain Austria-Hungary and Belgium, as in, we're fighting them.

Bawww, if you want Romania on your side, Austria-Hungary, it'll be quite expensive. Otherwise, we'll just join with Russia; our gains in Bessarabia are peanuts compared to the 3 million Romanians living in 100,000 square kilometers. We'd repatriate the Hungarians living there.

With the government of Spain now seeking an alliance with he eastern faction, and extending an offer of alliance to Portugal itself, the choice of alliances was now easy for President Manuel de Arriaga and his politicians. Spain was the only country which bordered the Portuguese homeland and opposing them in the conflict that was becoming inevitable would lead to the civil war which de Arriaga desperately wanted to avoid. Portugal and her overseas territories would attempt to enter the Germanischen Krieg Allianz. de Arriaga feared what would happen if the French and British attempted to invade the Portuguese colonies in Africa but Spain's decision was too important.

Code: Select all
To: Respected Leaders of the Germanischen Krieg Allianz
From: President Manuel de Arriaga of Portugal

Like our Spanish neighbours, the government of Portugal wishes to enter the Germanischen Krieg Allianz to ensure the security of our people and territories from France which is growing more arrogant each day. Although I am personally opposed to conflict between the continental powers, I fear that the next French action may force our hands.
