I think historical reenactments are cool, but the challenge of finding a group to join and getting to the reenactment when I don't drive, as well as the expense, have prevented be from taking up reenacting as a hobby. I'd be interested in either Civil War or WWII reenactments, as a Unionist or a Nazi.

I think Civil War reenacting would be more appealing if I was a guy and I would look right in a military uniform. Normally, being female is OK, but not when you're doing historical reenactments with corsets and hoop skirts.

With civil war renenacting you got to becareful.

Some groups are about historical accuracy, and showing history.

Other groups are about dressing up like confederates and using being in character to act like the most racist ass hats you could imagine.

I'd love to do a Thirty Years War/English Civil War re-enactment as well as a WW1 re-enactment.

They have re-enactments here every year in the capital. They re-enact the defeat of a major British invasion to our island in 1797. The locals and local militia did most of the fighting, many using nothing but farm tools, since most of the Spanish regulars had been sent to defend against a possible invasion of the island of Hispaniola. But the invasion turned out to be here and not Hispaniola. :palm:

I've been in a few Medieval reenactments, playing 13th century Lettigallian warrior. Nothing serious, really.

It's a nice hobby to pursue, but quite expensive and time-consuming too, getting all the period gear right. It's quite popular where I live, considering our rich martial history. Most re-enactors here go for Late Iron Age/Medieval period, but there are also quite a few clubs re-enacting Napoleonic, WWI and WWII eras.

We managed to get uniforms relatively easily (at least I did; as I was supposed to be one of the Patriots, all the materials I needed were lying around in my dad's attic.) However, it was a good thing nobody was watching us; we looked rather odd, with Redcoats and colonial militia facing off in lines with modern paintball guns.

There are a lot of groups that do scenario battles based off of historical battles. There's DDAYs, there's Tet Offensives, there's Battles of the Bulge. You name it, there's probably a major scenario paintball event for it. Lots of fun.

As did I.

I played the role of Colonel Epzibah Jackson, a humble Southern gentlemen simply trying to protect his way of life from Northern oppression. I found my brief experience with S&M to be helpful. Here's to you, Cass. It turns out whips and chains can be appropriate outside of the bedroom.

Another life lesson learned.

I've always wanted to re-enact a battle of the American Revolution. Obviously, I'd be on the side of the Revolutionaries. Re-enacting the Battle of Bunker Hill or the Boston Tea Party seems really fun.

I've always wanted to do a war reenactment. But not a civil war or revolutionary war one but like a Vietnam or gulf war reenactment those ones would (to me) be the most entertaining.

There are Revolutionary War reenactments in New England. I went to a sort of half-assed one in Rhode Island. It wasn't a very authentic reenactment, but there were some people there who you could tell were serious reenactors and I'm sure you can find serious reenactments if you know when and where to look.

You can't do Bunker Hill on the original hill, though. They tore it down and used the dirt to fill in swamps in other parts of Boston, and everything is built up now with modern streets.

I've always wanted to do military re-enactment in the War of 1812 (taking the side of the British).

But I'm not sure if an Asian guy participating would be historically inaccurate.

Just say you're a Chinese gun for hire that found himself in London after falling in love with a duchess, who left you during the war in favor of her brother. It was in that duel with her brother that you lost an arm, but gained an eye patch (so I guess you lost your eye too) and created your own business: Chang's House of Panics. But the potato famine killed your customers and your business, so you enlisted, hoping to rise up the ranks much like Colonel Sharp did. Sure the men under you didn't respect you at first, you got into a fight with your Irish sergeant (Ireland O'Patty, played by Samuel L Jackson) who tried to kill you at one point, but you gained their respect. It took some time, you had some fun adventures along the way but ever since then those men have died for you, fighting bravely for King George the Sane and country.

i'll join the joke on the last option. i'm less interested in the military aspects of re-enacting then in re-enacting ancient technologies and how people lived and got by with them, and the crafts themselves. it is from the latter angle that i at one time participated in the society for creative anachronism. at that time, when i was active in science fiction fandom, there was considerable cross over between the s.c.a., science fiction fandom, and the friends of the doctor, a doctor who fandom.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.
