Di Bradini Cup 25 U-21 World Cup

Image

Encouraged by a title win in the Under-15 World Championship last year and perhaps having an ulterior motive to get a retinue of people into Starblaydia during the coming upheaval in the region, the Miskatonic University FA, in charge of football in Wight, has sent a team of emerging talents to the Under-21 variant. Including seven of the under-15 team from that controversial success in Farfadillis, and five players already having won full caps for their country, this is a mixed team of experience and youth, relatively speaking. Impressed with the way former international Athelstan Marchand managed his under-15s, the MIU have tasked him with having a bash at the Under-21 title. It is understood his target is to qualify from the group stage.

The lads of The Apprentices are all too old to have been born in the broken islands of Wight, which emerged into AO about six years ago. Rather they come from Old Wight and arrived on the island archipelago as part of the migration known as The Great Remove, an attempt to populate the broken islands quickly in order to lay claim to it - a move which has worked. Thus these boys, being residents of the old reality bubble, are of mixed origin since, in the old country, reproduction is quite unheard of, and children are either grown in laboratories or come through the Small Door: that is to say, they come as the youngling dead from other multiverses; victims of disease, famine, maltreatment or unfortunate accidents. Through the Small Door each finds a happy ending in the pungent kind of paradise called Wight. This team is made up mostly of the many young people who subsequently migrated to the broken islands. Inevitably they will return to Old Wight when their lives are done and death takes them, where they will enjoy ageing either forwards or backwards (depending upon their age at their death) to the permanent age of 44 that all souls remain for the foreseeable eternities. A few have never moved out of Old Wight and will age very slowly towards 44 unless they spend time out of the Old Country, in which case they will proceed with the usual ageing process. As football is an amateur sport in Wight, those players not at school or college will also be holding down jobs in their spare time.

Goalkeepers

Dexter Mackay - (Age 21) Club in Wight: Spit City. Full Caps: 1
First played in the Wightling Under-21 squad that finished fourth at the Port Hawthorne Invitational two years ago, and was subsequently named in the AOCAF-37 squad, where he made one appearance for the full national side. Playing a non-speaking, non-named bit-part as a minor gangster in Mark Helprin's novel Winter's Tale, where he came to an untimely end in The Battery, New York, Mackay was plucked on his way down the Hundred Forty-Four Steps, which lead to oblivion, by Brian Blessed Cloned, to serve in a new narrative: that of the Uncertain Dimensions and Búa's imagined story of Wight.

Reserve

Admanzah Hilton - (19) Looe Sewage Works FC
Back-up to Mackay in the Port Hawthorne Invitational, Hilton appears in his second tournament for the Under-21s here. Hilton came to Wight from the British Royal Navy, where, in the eighteenth century, he had caught a pox in Tahiti and died aboard H.M.S. Farsight. His body was buried at sea and recovered by Búa's fishermen off Wight Spit. Emigrated to AO-Wight during the Great Remove and works as a carpenter, recently on the Spit Lawns twin-arena complex built for the Cup of Harmony. Suffers and irrational fear of tropic peoples, like Vilitans and Ossidiacquans, thanks to his experiences in Tahiti.

Wenn Bosanko - (17) Extramarine
An exciting prospect coming through at the Wightling champion side, Extramarine, where he was the beneficiary of the football gene enhancement therapy, Dickinson-50. A Cornish tin miner in a previous life, he works in Red Knoll Mine where he also turns out for the local Miner's Rules team, a variant of mob football played underground with lamps attached to the forehead. He has been known to play as jerseyman in Código Bola for his village team, Coffin Copse, however with it being a rather violent past-time, his club Extramarine actively discourage him from taking part.

Image
Defenders

Jowan Cawse - (20) Extramarine - Left Fullback
Like Bosanko has benefitted from being supplemented by the football gene Dickinson-50, one of the job perks at Extramarine. Cawse is now a regular in the Dickinson's dominant league side and it's a wonder he has never been selected for a tournament before. A competitive and deceptively quick full back of intimidating proportions, Cawse also originates from the English westcountry, where he was an apprentice scarecrow before catching pneumonia and coming to Wight via The Lonely Road. Bears an uncanny resemblance to the birds he was supposed to scare, and is a fluent speaker of several Corvid languages and dialects.

Chavaqquq Yaval - (19) FC Berserkr - Right Fullback
Central to the rise of FC Berserkr in the Haphazard Foundation, the diminutive fullback has deservedly won a place in the Under-21 squad for his positional good sense, eye for a pass, and attacking intent. Not the best tackler in the world, commentators often speculate that he would make a better winger than fullback.

M.V.Cabel - (20) Arnold Bedsit Rovers - Centre Half. Full caps: 4 - Captain
Appearing for the first time in a senior squad during World Cup 62, M.V. Cabel impressed at the Under-21s tournament in Port Hawthorne, where the team reached the semi-finals under the guidance of coach Lucifer Jones. Outgoing national manager Brian Clough Resurrected also watched him in the World Cup trials at the Husting Grounds in Wight Spit, where the young internationals were comfortably beaten by the postmen of Wight GPO. Masvidal is said to be a big fan of the giant centre half, who's full name is McGlennacuddie Varifocal Cabel. He is the only son of Scottish opticians.

Izaäk Abel - (20) Four Bit Irregulars - Centre Half
Playing for the team founded by former Wight midfield star Four Bit, the ultimate footballing calculator, Abel has had a schooling in computational football, and plays with a cool and steely determination. He would tell you that 75.333r% of his career passes have been successful, 81.746% of his attempted tackles have been successful, his team averages 53.234% possession when he is playing and he averages 2'33" of ball time per game, approximately. Wired up to the Irregulars networked game engine, he can also take a feed from Four Bit himself if the player is present at a match, enhancing his optimal performance index by roughly 19.878854378218% when compared with his usual non-wired performances.

Reserve

Colan Whetter - (16) Looe Sewage Works - Left Fullback
One of the many 'labrats' born of the widespread cloning system in Old Wight, Colan counts the geneticist and retired timelord Doctor Pertwee-Who as his father, the Silvertown Campus Laboratory of the Miskatonic University as his mother, and the petri dishes of shelf 4a as his extended family. Adopted by the Whetter family and moved to the Broken Islands, he plans to get into the family business of sewery.

Cobus Kingsley - (20) Saracen FC - Right Fullback
One of the country's most promising young defenders who is just beginning to break into the Haphazard Foundation's top flight team Saracen FC, the club owned by master assassin and first lieutenant of Búa, Hassan i Sabbah. Defensively stronger than Chavaqquq Yaval, he is a less finessed fullback and liable to take bookings for red mist incidents. A shoemaker's apprentice back in Wight, he has plans to one day create his own brand of sport shoes and make them the most desirable trainers and boots in the Nation States. He won't even exploit poor, hungry elven children, with their spindly fingers and sad eyes, to take advantage of extremely low manufacture costs.

Climo Coss - (16) Azerbaycan FC - Centre Half
A boy with an eye for an escapade. Plagued with disciplinary issues during his short junior career, relating less to his cheerful temperament and more to his sense of comic timing, coaches often say he would be a world class prospect if only he would take the game at least half-seriously. It is unlikely. Climo is a 'labrat' of the Ely Fen Genetics College in Miskatonia, adopted by Cuthbert & Clarys Coss and brought to the Broken Islands.

Barlow Todd - (21) AFC Portsmouth - Centre Half
Appeared in the Port Hawthorne Invitational tournament. A reliable and unfussy defender, who now lives in AO-Wight after coming down the Back Road on Old Shakerssen the Audioslav Remover's van. In fact he got on so well with the Remover that he now works for Shakerssen, navigating the route between the reality of Nation States and surreality of Old Wight in the Uncertain Dimensions with special deliveries, and stopping along the way to feed the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal. That beast the Holy Empire unleashed on Wight has now been tamed by the ants that live in the Inbetween where the Back Road wends.

Image
Midfielders

Duffy Oscar - (19) Arnold Bedsit Rovers - Left Midfielder
A surprise inclusion in the Port Hawthorne friendly squad, Oscar has gone on to feature as a regular for unlikely football powerhouse (in Wight) of Arnold Bedsit Rovers, and is rewarded with a starting place in the first official Under-21 squad. An apprentice piano tuner back home in Arnold, an almost dead and very rarely used art, meaning he probably earns less from this than he does in expenses for his football. Nicknamed 'paper boy' for one of several other jobs he does to make up his income, and counts himself lucky he's not nicknamed 'bowling alley pinsetter', 'manual nut picker', or 'saturday ornatrix'.

Zachary Fosse-Gordon - (21) AFC Portsmouth - Right Midfielder. Full caps: 2
Another of the Port Hawthorne boys, and one of the younger players to win a full cap in the AOCAF-37 campaign, Fosse-Gordon is one of the prodigious talents from the AFC Portsmouth academy, which has been tested to the limit in recent years as financial mismanagement has forced them to sell of every senior player registered at the club. All that's left are the amateurs and the kids. When not earning money he's never going to receive for Pompey, Fosse-Gordon is a trainee Light Bender for the Wight Neon Company.

Piran MacKenzie - (19) Eastal Lunar FC (Vilita) - Defensive Central Midfielder. Full caps: 4
Like M.V. Cabel, he appeared for the first time in a senior squad at World Cup 62, having impressed during the Under-21s tournament in Port Hawthorne, where the team reached the semi-finals under the guidance of coach Lucifer Jones. Former AFC Portsmouth trainee McKenzie impressed enough during his first major tournament to win a professional contract in Vilita and become the first Wightling, other than non-native Masvidal, to turn professional, and to play abroad. He has divided opinion in Wight with this move, where many hold to the high ideals of amateurism, and find this an insult to sporting purity, while others argue the nation should be proud of it's first football export. At Portsmouth they are just grateful for the undisclosed but allegedly 'substantial' transfer fee.

Ia Rodda - (20) Haitiëns - Attacking Central Midfielder
Making his debut in a national squad, many feel not before time. The rough-and-tough attacking midfielder struck up an excellent partnership at his club with rough-and-tough striker Masvidal, who was very much his technical mentor. This means Rodda, a tall, quick and solid pugilist, combines a decent reserve of skill with a considerable physical presence which he is happy to put about a bit on the field of play. The Fearless Red, they call him, on account of his dazzling mop of orange-red hair. And his fearlessness.

Reserve

Argon Skewes - (16) Ouistreham Rouge - Left Midfielder - Vice Captain
Harking orginally from Myddle, a hamlet of West Mercia, where in the middle ages he caught the rat pox and died, along with two other brothers and a sister. In Old Wight he lived for a time in the Black Engine Orphanage, before being adopted by Aschylus Skewes and Donna Maw. They came to the broken islands during the Great Remove. Argon has a footballing younger brother Rumon, as well as their adopted brother Ludo Negus, another of the Skewes clan. All three play for the Rouge.

Maderus Gurvey - (16) Arnold Bedsit Rovers - Right Midfielder
A prodigy of political philosophy, is already in the employ of President Dictablanda Jean Baptiste, and wants nothing more than one day to be the next unelected dictator of Wight. A natural leader, and bossy, he was in contention for the captain's armband but probably missed out as he doesn't suffer fools gladly. Which wouldn't be a good thing for Climo Coss. Plays on the right wing, and thinks on the left.

Jett Snyder - (16) Iskander Turkish Memorial - Defensive Central Midfielder
Son of the famous buccaneer Jordan de Marisco of Lundy, he was aboard Marisco's coastal-raiding corvette the Bristol Rover lost off the Brittany coast, aged only 8. Jett was being groomed by his father to be the "moste fearesoemest of all ye brigands of the Brystol Channel and the Eirish Seas" according to accounts at the time, but came to Wight a damp and scrawny thing. After hundreds of years, he was still a dripping wet and plaintive child, until he moved to new Wight, where he dried off, grew up, and plans to make an honest living in the Wightfishery.

Ruel St. Vincent - (20) Lucifero - Central Midfielder
Featured in the Port Hawthorne squad, St. Vincent lives on the Dante Archipelago where he earns a living as a landscape gardener's assistant. He is also a gig rower of some considerable reputation for The Insula Evangelizo Gig, which I need not tell you has been the best gig crew for as long as anyone can remember. His club were relegated to the second tier of the Broken Islands Association last season, after an abysmal showing, so it's a surprise to se St. Vincent called up.

Image
Forwards

Arnaud van Buggenum - (21) Dada FC - Vice Captain. Full caps: 4 + 1 goal
Once considered a young starlet of the national squad, making four appearances and scoring once before a loss of form saw him fall out of contention. He's now on his way back with this appearance in the Under-21 squad where he is expected to lead the line. Of Dutch origin, van Buggenum came to Wight via the Blockade of Amsterdam, and the rather unpredictable youngster was snapped up by the surrealists of Dada FC. The team from Icke City have consistently outperformed expectations by being impossible to predict or understand. Made up of some of the early surrealists and their disciples, they play with style and baffling tactics, quite often just make a mockery of the game and their opposition.

Louis Moran - (19) Arnold Bedsit Rovers
A reserve in the Port Hawthorne squad, Moran gets a promotion to starter for this competition after a good season for his championship winning club, the Bedsit Rovers, who almost pulled off the huge shock of winning the Senior Championships - the combined post-season league of all Wightling football's elite clubs and decider of the National title. In the end the 'Sitters came second, but with Moran leading the line it was always a good bet he would get the call to partner van Buggenum up front in the di Bradini Cup.

Reserves

Vuron Old - (16) Le Tissier Penal Colony
Unfortunately for Vuron, his father is a resident warder at the bleak penal colony, which pretty much makes Vuron a prisoner there. Not one to dwell on his misfortune, he is a founder of the junior football team on the prison colony island and manager of it. He is also the only player, since most are agreed that Le Tissier is no place to bring up a child. He will enjoy a trip abroad for a change of scenery. Being a boy of such self-motivational skills, he's a natural leader and one day hopes to sport the captain's armband for his country.

Manalaus Carne - (16) AFC Portsmouth
Something of a late developer, Manalaus has only just signed for troubled AFC Portsmouth, where he is considered a raw and unrefined talent with huge potential. He is another 'labrat', from the Silvertown Campus Laboratory of the Miskatonic University. Much to the delight of national manager the warhorse Masvidal, he is of the more physical breed of strikers, the type who intimidate the hardest of centre halves.

A note on Old Wight and new Wight: As described in AOCAF 36, and the preceding Cup of Harmony 52, Búa King of Uncertain Dimensions wished to have a copy of his Wight in Enness, and he selected Atlantian Oceania for reasons which remain opaque. In the Great Remove, as the story was called, the great storyteller and weaver of universes Ronny Tolkien was commissioned to sing the copy into existence, but as he was singing, a discordant note was struck up by Malcolm MacLaren, and the resulting mess was the Wight Catastrophe, in which the island appeared suddenly in a storm of volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis in the place where the Köselî landmass had stood. Today, the broken islands of new Wight are full of generally normal humans (with the odd clone and a few anthropomorphic pigs) while the more metaphysical beings have withdrawn back into Old Wight, which is a pungent kind of nirvana.

OOC: Inspired by AIF's latest RP in the World Cup. Matchday One, as posted in the sign-up thread, is scorinated tonight, at around 10pm UK time.

Lucas Cable was thirteen, and he was special. This was for several reasons, such as being a thirteen year old goalkeeper on the books at Jhanna United - the Starblaydi capital's least glamourous professional club after Iskara Daii and Jhanna City - who'd been selected for the 25th Di Bradini Cup. Lucas was tall for his age with that innate crazy goalkeeper confidence to dive at the feet of oncoming strikers, jump headlong into a group of players at a corner or yell at his big, burly defenders that they weren't doing their jobs properly - that too was fairly special.

What Lucas had, however, the potential for what would later be termed (variously) as Temporal Perceptual Disorder, Chronosensory Acuity, prophetic ability or, simply, 'the crazies'.

It manifested itself in an everyday occurrence by him simply being a very good goalkeeper. His reactions appeared to be extremely fast, with excellent hand/eye co-ordination and a large percentage of fast-twitch muscles. Such was his growing ability as he matured, It was probably for the best that he was not yet old enough to buy lottery tickets, just in case he really put his mind towards selected the numbers. At the age of thirteen he played with the style and confidence of a goalie in his early twenties, despite the fact he was obviously much smaller and less physically powerful than a fully developed athlete.

Every four years, the SFA made sure they had development for the future, in regards to goalies. They picked the best goalkeeper who was under the age of 21 (obviously). With only a maximum of seven games to play, it was assumed that he or she wouldn't get injured or otherwise miss out on the tournament, so substitutes were not really considered in game terms. However, the SFA always made sure that the most promising goalie who would be eligible for the next Di Bradini Cup would be in the squad, too, for experience and the ability to be a back-up who was still worth it. Finally a third goalkeeper was selected, usually an exceedingly young one who was only just signed to a club's youth team. Potential and development was everything to the SFA, though they assumed that the third 'keeper would never have to play.

In the days leading up to the home tournament, and the opening game against Farfadillis in the Britannican city of Montepool, he had dreamed. He'd dreamed of huge cathedrals with rows upon rows of monks, all chanting and praying together. Images of golden eagles, purple banners and drums with the glint of steel. There was dripping blood and incandescent beams of light and energy. There was the World Cup trophy, pointed ears, footballs, stone age clubs, dinosaurs and top-end WGPC cars.

He'd always had strange dreams, for as long as he could remember, but lately they were getting a little too vivid for him. In the night before the match he'd dreamed of the monks again, rank upon rank of them in an endless cathedral, with stone columns supporting an arching roof so far above them that he could barely see it. They stretched on into infinity, all chanting as they prayed. He couldn't understand the words, but he could feel the power coming from them. He stood at the head of them, knowing the altar was behind his back, as the words started to form in his mind. The name, their god, spoken again and again in a cacophonous crescendo of chant and prayer.

The name formed on his lips, as he raised his hands to the distant ceiling and cried the word aloud.

Zuam'Deeb.

Lucas rolled over in his sleep. It was a deep dream, and he would be refreshed in the morning for the light warm-up, ready for his duty of sitting on the bench for ninety minutes in Montepool while the elder footballers played their game. He'd get his chance. One day.

From the diary of Alexis Zeljeznicar, 18

Reached Starblaydia today. Being in another country notwithstanding, I can't tell you how good it is to be surrounded by people who speak my own language, again. Not that the 'grathis haven't been accepting or welcoming or tried their best or what-have-you, but it makes a huge difference being able to call across the plane in my own language rather than make a bad attempt at the little 'grathi dialect I've been able to pick up thus far. Little things, in-jokes, puns that only work in Polarian, that kind of thing.

Been able to try and take some cues from those that have been to these things before, as well. van der Riise tried as best he could to pair up a newb to the team with a more experienced player, and as such I find myself sharing a room with Jean-Eric Villeneuve, who was in this team before last time they played the DBC. Should be okay. He seems nice enough and with any luck I'll be able to pick his brain over how best to work on playing abroad as a youngster - Jean-Eric plays in Cotdelapoms, though, I suppose he's had an advantage there. He's a Rochefroide, and their dialect takes plenty of cues from the Cotdelapomais language. Still, I'm sure he'll have some advice for me.

Nice to see some familiar faces, too. I know nobody else was at Young Boys with me last season, but I knew people like Noah and Fabian briefly when we were all at the Haapa-Mechelin. Morten too, actually, now I think about it.

Should be a good tournament. We've got our first team training session later, and then the first game against Ko-oren in the Sports Hall. I know absolutely nothing about either. Steep learning curve ahead, I think. My first international tournament, though, how exciting! Hopefully I can get some time on the pitch and show the fans just how much I want to be a part of the senior side one day. Onwards and upwards.

A roster detailing the members of the
Kiryu-shi National Football Youth Team,
for competition in the
25th edition of the Di Bradini Cup
submitted for the benefit of potential rivals and interested parties.

Coaching Staff
Patrick Robertson (Head Coach) --- Age: 34
Patrick Robertson, a long time reserve for the Kiryu-shi national football team will be making his international coaching debut after leading the Amanuma University Youth Development Team for the past three years. Although he is not particularly experienced as a head coach, he is widely regarded for his knowledge of tactics as well as a keen understanding for training. While he was never a flashy player, or particularly successful internationally, he was always a leader from the bench, and was a true two-way midfielder domestically. While he isn’t personable, his gruff demeanor often lends itself to commanding respect from the bench.

GK
Megumi Harris (#31) --- Age: 21 --- Sakaino University
Coming from the prestigious Sakaino University, Megumi Harris represents the first true keeping talent developed by the Kiryu-shi academy. While young and raw, Megumi has started for several years for the league-champion Sakaino University senior squad, and is one of the most athletically gifted players in the nation. As this is her second time appearing in the Di Bradini Cup, she will be challenged to lead the young and inexperienced defense from the back line.

DF
Leanor Reynolds (#48) --- Age: 17 --- Amanuma University
Leading the Kiryu-shi defense from the center back position, the one-year starter at Amanuma University has been widely praised for her physical presence on the back line from a young age. One of the proteges of head coach Patrick Robertson, she was pushed into the starting lineup over a wide array of talent on the defensive side of the pitch. Despite her young age, she already is a physical presence, and she displays great body awareness as she uses her imposing size to knock opponents of the ball. As she isn’t fleet of foot, and can’t withstand fast runs on her own, she will need to depend on more athletic talent around her to be successful.

Jasper Keith (#25) --- Age: 21 --- Umeda University
Keith has proven a reliable defender in the domestic University league, bolstering a formidable Umeda defense with his fine understanding of positioning and ball angles. He is an incredibly intelligent player, able to diagnose attacks, and uses his football smarts to help lead the back line. He will be athletically outmatched by good-to-great forwards, however, as he doesn’t have the size, speed, or agility to keep up and win one-on-one battles with regularity. Like Reynolds, his play is bolstered by the team around him.

Kenichi Ogusawa (#41) --- Age: 18 — Kasakake University
An amazing athlete on the defense, Ogusawa compensates for his relatively diminutive size with his ability to keep up with any defender. He has the ability to turn his hips at the slightest inclinations, start and stop on a dime, and the keen ability to tackle at just the right moment. While he is a distinct liability in set piece defending where his size renders him practically useless, he will likely be charged with covering up for the athletic ability of the two other defenders on the Kiryu-shi side.

MF
Bess Mi (#27) --- Age: 21 --- Aioi University
The younger sister of national team starter Tress Mi, Bess was a reserve on the Di Bradini Cup from four years ago. While she is not as talented as her sister, she can hold her own in the defensive midfield with her fine tackling ability. While she isn’t able to dominate matches against University competition, her level-headed playing style and experience was taken into consideration with her selection to this year’s starting 11.

Ray Hessler (#26) --- Age: 21 --- Sakaino University
Hessler is one of the most true student athletes on the Kiryu-shi side, as he has combined an ambitious academic career with a prolific four years as a starter for the Sakaino University football team. Once again, showing the tendencies of Patrick Robertson, he makes up for the lack speed with his positioning and head for the game. While he and Bess Mi will play almost interchangeably in the defensive midfield, communicating as need be to handle opposing attackers, he is more likely to control the ball from a defensive position and send deep, probing passes up the pitch.

Sean Smith (#33) --- Age: 18 --- Kawauchi University
Smith will provide the majority of the speed on this team, as he is a pure sprinter on the outside edge. While his football skills are extremely unrefined, he is explosive and strong from the wing position, and his athleticism provides a potential threat at any moment. He doesn’t have much experience playing domestically, and can likely be exploited defensively, but will be fun to watch while he isn’t making inexperienced mistakes.

Ichii Hamoto (#34) --- Age: 20 --- Amamuma University
Hamoto is a solid starter for the Amanuma side, where he has managed to build a reputation for clutch play, setting up late goals and making big plays in key moments. While there is nothing that strikes the observer as immediately notable about his style of play he doesn’t have any particular weakness, and is an above average defender playing across from Smith.

Mary Cobb (#28) --- Age: 29 --- Sakuragi University
Cobb is a natural offensive midfielder, as she has the ability to make plays on her own with her ball control and quick feet while also possesses a fine ability to read defenses and execute smart passes. She doesn’t have the goalscoring instinct one would ideally desire from somewhere in her position, but she is a levelheaded presence who has the ability to create goal scoring opportunities on a regular basis.

FW
Enéh d'Erdélyi (#9) --- Age: 20 --- Sakaino University
The biggest break-through star in Starblaydia four years ago, d'Erdélyi will be the primary scoring option for this year’s team. d’Erdélyi’s family moved to Kiryu-shi proper eight years ago, and she has taken Kiryu-shi youth football by storm with a powerful left-footed shot. Her style of play reflects the play of the former political dissidents who have made their way back into the nation, as she looks to attack the goal every time she gets a foot on the ball. While her size and athletic ability aren’t top-tier, the bend that she can achieve with her left foot can devastate opposition keepers.

Achior a'Tirpák (#5) --- Age: 19 --- Kawauchi University
a'Tirpák is another of the former dissidents who relocated back to the main land of Kiryu-shi, and while he is a completely different type of player than d’Erdélyi, he is another solid goal-scoring option at this level. He was a reserve for the previous Di Bradini Cup squad at just 15 years old, and combines complete fearlessness with a top tier athleticism and the desire to score every time he touches the ball. While his maturity has been questioned, as well as his ability to widen his vision and distribute the ball effectively, he is a natural goal-scorer who will do anything it takes to find the back of the net.

Reserves
Rie Ito (#22) --- Age: 21 --- Maruyama University - GK
Steve Hamm (#20) --- Age: 16 --- Sakuragi University - DF
Adrian Pelior (#19) --- Age: 19 --- Umeda University - DF
Jonathon Marksman (#16) --- Age: 20 --- Amanuma University - DF/MF
Tyler Ishinoki (#44) --- Age: 19 --- Aioi University - MF/FW
Hideki McSimmons (#46) --- Age: 20 --- Kasakake University - MF/FW
Vivian Taro (#30) --- Age: 21 --- Kawauchi University - FW

Østergård was there, sitting on his couch while watching TV. They were going to face Starblaydia the following day. He felt a bit of fear, they had five world cups, but still, these were U-21 players, just as he was. It also helped him to think that Starblaydia hadn't won a world cup in some time, as he hadn't been born back then. Sure, the purple team that everyone feared had been gone for a long time, but these new players could be the next golden generation. Then again, so could his generation be, but not a Starblaydi one.
The group they were going to face was one that, at least to him, looked like an even run for all teams, maybe with Starblaydia getting some advantage for being home, but not much difference. Their match against them would certainly be the most important one. Free Swiss States has reached the semifinals last time, but he was sure these weren't the same players. Maklohi Vai, however, was unheard of, but so was Farfadillis. This time, Farfadillis didn't have any national team players, like it did last time. This could backfire, but at the same time, could be good to develop more young talents.

After all these thought crossed Vasilije's mind, he remembered that he had to be at least a bit optimistic, and tsop thinking about how every team just might be better than them. Why wouldn't they be able to qualify for the knock.out stages? Or even top the group? They had some talented players, even he was talented enough to lead the team. There was no need to be pessimistic. There certainly were going to have to face some really tough opponent's, but that was all part of the game. And maybe they were even tougher. He'd end up learning it after the match, so he just had to wait a day more. The first match wearing the red and green shirt.

The Cup Half Empty: An Account of Alyssa Marquette & Di Bradini Cup 25

Alyssa woke up, got dressed, and met the rest of the team downstairs for breakfast. She sat by herself. Nobody had talked to her since the plane landed yesterday, not even her own roommate. Alyssa excused this though, as it had been 2:00 AM when they checked into the hotel, and everyone was tired. Alyssa looked around the room, only a few people were talking to each other. Most of the people on the team probably haven't met before, and if they had, it was at a tournament or "Calvarie Circuit". Alyssa was happy nobody had approached her, the last thing she needed was more attention.

Alyssa's mom was the famous Marissa Marquette, and her dad was Sylvester Marquette. Marissa was a famous singer, who died horribly six months ago. Like most celebrity couples, the relationship between Marissa and Sylvester wasn't going well. Marissa had threatened to file for divorce, taking all of her money with her. The fighting then escalated as the two argued over Alyssa, work, and rumors that Marissa was having an affair. In the end Sylvester killed Marissa, leaving Alyssa alone.

Afterwards, Alyssa had little privacy in her life. Out of nowhere, everyone wanted to know how Alyssa was handling things, and if she'd testify against her father. Things even got so bad that tabloid "The Pitch" printed a story hinting that the ordeal had made Alyssa suicidal. Alyssa had become the poster-child for dysfunctional families, a distinction she herself did not want. During the trial she refused to speak neither for nor against her father.

When Alyssa was invited to compete at the Di Bradini Cup, she accepted on the contention that her participation in the cup would not be disclosed until after the tournament. She didn't want anybody thinking that her family had anything to do with her getting a spot on the team.
Out of no where a boy from the team walked up to Alyssa.

"I'm Byron Buckhart" he said.
"I'm Alyssa" she replied.
"Hey, don't I know you from somewhere?"
"Oh shit," Alyssa thought. "Here it comes."
"Yeah, I do! You competed in the Helena Falls Circuit" Bryon continued, ignoring her pause.
"Oh yeah, I did." Alyssa said, finally exhaling.

Life doesn't get better than this

Cris squeezed the trigger. Bullets sprayed from his gun, muted by his earpieces, but still loud enough to drown out the music. On the other side of the firing range, an outline went down, a series of holes drilled neatly into its head. Cris pivoted, took aim again. Waited half a beat, and then fired again. Another target down.

He moved to fire once more when he heard a voice shout "CRIS!" He turned his head, saw a familiar face. Reached down carefully, clicked on the safety. Then removed his earpieces and lay the machine pistol across the side table.

"Yes?" he asked.

"They announced the line-ups," Kerrigan said, his older brother and compatriot. "You've been picked as starter. Over Jason Kesalis."

Cris said nothing for a second. He was the kind of person who rarely revealed his feelings on his face, when he could help it. It had led many to describe him as having a bland personality. "Good," he said finally. "I'm glad to hear it." He turned back to his work.

"What is this..." Yngvi said, a sliver of drool appearing on the side of his mouth. "It's actually fantastic. When they said high, this is what they mean. This is exactly what I mean. Am I talking slowly? I don't feel like I'm talking slowly. More like the rest of the world is moving so fast."

He, Þórr, and Pétur were in his basement, slowly suffocating of incensed hagalshuut. There was probably no better way to die. Þórr was already keeled over, his eyes glazed. He was having a dream about being unborn, as a child, sliding back into his mother's womb. He wasn't sure if he should be enjoying it or not.

Pétur started laughing, his breath releasing plumes of smoke as inhaled clouds billowed from his open mouth. "This is so great. Have you had some yet? This is so great. This is the best. I can't believe I haven't shown it to you guys yet. I need to show you this. It's the greatest thing I ever found. I'm so glad I found it. I'm slow glad I found it." He found his tongue making slurping noises in his mouth. He no longer had any control over it.

That was when Yngvi's phone rang. It rang twice before he realized what is was. "Sorry, man. he said to the radiator. "Gotta take this.. will just be a minute." He flipped open his cell.

"Yeah..."

"Oh...."

"Okay...."

He closed it.

"What did they want?" the radiator asked him.

"Something about football or something," Yngvi said. "Like getting selected. I dunno, It was a while ago. I'm sure it's not very important."

The office of the Swiss Sports League Board was in total disarray. This was due to the fact, no doubt, that Board president James Hunt had been found dead, decapitated, and quartered in Old Guard several days earlier. Apparently his feud with a certain Mr. Sharpointy had led to a dramatic showdown. The results were evident.

"I don't envy your position, Lukas." Jonah Nizzy, acting head of the Board, said to Lukas Robel. "I'm making you captain because you're the only one who has been to this thing before. But you're going to have to work with us here. Transportation... at this point... well, we'll figure something out. Hotel arrangements... almost finished."

"We're screwed," Lukas said.

"Yeah. That's the best way to say it. Also, one of your players might be a murderous psychopath. Another is currently facing sexual assault charges, and I'm pretty sure a couple of them are hardcore hagal addicts."

"Where's Artémis when you need him?"

"Yes... I was thinking the same thing. Oh well."

Jonah looked around, and sighed.

"It's been four years," he said, finally. "Things sure have changed. But James dying? Not even that I could have foreseen. Good luck, Lukas. You're going to need it."

Robothings Draw with Replacements

Vilita & Turori 1-1 Vettrera

After weeks of preparing for the opening match of the 25th Di Bradini Cup against Tyrants, officials at the Arcticala headquarters of the Vilita & Turori Robothing project were informed at the 11th hour that the Tyrants had withdrawn from the Di Bradini Cup and would not be sending a team.

Tournament officials scrambled to identify a replacement squad and the sporting association of Vettrera jumped at the opportunity to send their Under-21 side to Starblaydia for the exclusive competition held seasonally in Atlantian Oceania.

Officials and technicians alike were confident that it would be a strong performance from the Robothings in the 25th Di Bradini Cup, considering the strong showing during the 24th Di Bradini Cup, and additional matches during the recent World's Fair Play trophy allowing some of the bugs to be worked out of the system, as well as allowing time for the new Turorian bots to be integrated into the Robothings system.

It was now truly a Vilita & Turori roster, both football associations approving their representation by the Robothings in the Di Bradini Cup but being very specific about the wording in their approval. It is believed that there is no avenue for the Robothings to participate in either individual national team, or, in the Vilitan League on any existing Vilitan League club.

The last bit of information has sparked some rumors that Arcticala Robotics has been trying to set up a new club domestically to allow them to enter the Robothings as a unified squad into the Vilitan Cup. While no one at Arcticala Robotics or the Vilitan League would confirm the rumors, it doesn't appear that there is anything in the agreements regarding the Robothings to prevent this from happening in the future.

Unfortunately, the Arcticala Robotics team, working on location in Starblaydia and having no scouting material on Vettrera, could do little to prepare for their new opponents.

It was a troublesome start for the Robothings, with Vettrera coming out flying with 5 shots on goal in the opening half hour, Aquilla Johnson converting the first goal of the match in the 19th minute.

DogbéBot leveled the scoreline in the 37th minute as the Vettrera players appeared to tire, but they looked recharged in the second half, defending any chances Vilita & Turori threw at them.

It was not the result that the Arcticala Robotics team was looking for from the opener, but the draw keeps destiny in their own hands as the Robothings move forward to face regional rivals Burchadinger and the always unpredictable team from Slembana.

There have also been talks of young Turorian midfielders Klaillal Tuirma joining up with the squad, but Tuirma was not seen at the Jhanna City Recreation Ground and it is not believed that Arcticala Robotics engineers are yet confident at having the Robothings sharing the pitch with a citizen player other than the goalkeeper.

"Alright, alright," said a voice they all recognized. "Enough of the dramatics, boys. Let's get it together."

Heads turned, mouths gaped. Words spread quickly. It was du-Lusavik, they said among themselves. Yes, THE du-Lusavik. He was here? But why?

Gordon du-Lusavik stood, arms crossed, looking over the young players who would one day rise to replace him. 16 years ago he had been in their position. The Swiss team's international debut, coming third in the Baptism of Fire. He was the only one left now, the rest had retired or died early deaths. Kytle had been the only other, dead from years of rampant alcoholism. Judging by the reports he had been given, a few of the kids here were on the same track.

He nodded to Lukas Robel, the team's captain and the only one here he had an inkling of respect for. Robel had been year four years before, a starter for the team which had come out of nowhere to tie his record and get third. Lukas was one of that generation, the one that had swept them to the first Swiss victories in international cups ever. They might have been only minor tournaments, but nonetheless they were seen by the older footballing generation as a sign change may have finally come.

And that's why, in the wake of a failed World Cup run and the out-of-the blue death of James Hunt, the Board had, frantic and unready, opted to send the one constant they had to try to resurrect their chances.

"Some of you might not know me," Gordon said, knowing the words were untrue. "My name is Gordon du-Lusavik, and I have been selected to serve as your coach for the remainder of the tournament." An awed hush fell over the players.

"I arrived today to watch the match. You guys played good out there." He paused. "Good, but not great. And not good enough to get into the Round of 16." He said it flatly, without emotion. In the corner, one of the players was nodding emphatically. "Most of you have never played an international tournament in your life. And it showed."

"You're going up against Starblaydia next. You think you're ready for them? You're not. Our record against them is a tie and a loss out of two games. And that was with arguably the strongest generation in our nation's history." He saw that most of them were following him. Good. Maybe it wasn't completely hopeless. "The other match in the group is against Farfadillis. Most of you have probably heard of Sê Mêrí. You'll be going up against a team of that caliber, if not higher."

He looked around the room, trying to gauge the players. Their pervasive moaning had stopped, at least. "We can beat them, though. Last time we were here the team came together to take down the team of Milan Beskid." Bringing up that name had a visible effect, even though it came as a surprise to no one. The team's victory four years ago against Kinitaria was one of the most watched moment in the history of Swiss football.

"I'll be back soon. Get yourselves together and start stretching. Take your time. Follow your captain. He's the only one here who knows what he's doing." He made for the door, and then turned back. "And if I find drugs on any of you, you're off the team. No questions, no excuses, nothing. And that's only the start. Behave yourselves. You represent more than you, gentlemen. You are the Swiss nation as long as your are on Starblaydi soil. Better start acting like it."

Keeper 64
Coach Ukolu Molopani

"64! What the hell happened?"
"Uh... sir. It's just some issues I'm having at home."
"You allowed two goals from the other keeper! And not just the starting keeper! The third stringer, Divadeim!
"Well, they were tough-"
"NO. THEY WERE EASY. YOU'RE JUST AWFUL."
"They were rocket powered balls!"
"Well they had no curve on them! Get a hand out there, you lazy keeper!"
"I'm gonna call CPS on you!"
"Oh, really? What's their number?"
"Well, uh, it starts with a 1."
"Yeah, great. DON'T MESS WITH ME."

In reality, 64 was having issues. His mother had recently moved across town, and his father was slipping further away, further even than from the divorce two years ago. It seemed as though he was perpetually lost, always searching for happiness, but never able to find it. The pain just dragged him down further. 64 had had his share of issues with the divorce too. He had never been close to his mother, but had constantly desired that she be closer. That now seemed impossible. With his father indisposed, 64 had to take rides from his teammates and friends, and was often forced to handle some of the managing of the house; bills had to paid, after all.
It didn't help that he was in South Wakita. Everyone but the residents said it was in a "bounce-back" phase, but the reality was quite different. The gangs still pervaded throughout the neighborhood, and it was only by virtue of sports that 64 had escaped. On the pitch, he couldn't be disturbed by the thugs. They kept to their alleyways and general places of ill repute. But now, with 64 having to spend more time away from his father, out of the house, the street men were picking up on his presence. "Where you from?" they would ask, slightly sneering. "Nowhere," replied 64, each time. But after 5 or 6 encounters, the thugs had begun to pick up their recon; they knew who he was now. Luckily, 64 had to leave for the match right around then. He would still have to face his demons after the next match.

It's A Tie Against Astograth!
The Grotebergish U21 team was at the White Tower, whatever that is, along with the one of Astograth. Turns out they tied.
Goal Scorers: Albert Zacharias, Anartz Agirrebenia
Yellow is Groteberg
Green is Astograth

OOC: Below is the first part of the first chapter of the fictional book The Greatness of Rushmore, Our Glorious Home. The book was written by Teige Draganov, one of the founding fathers of the Pan-Rushmori movement, and is generally considered to be the Pan-Rushmori bible. It details the journey of a man, known only as Maurice, as he embarks on a journey across Rushmore in search of an unknown and mysterious book, which is said to be very powerfull. While Maurice is on his journey, a group known only as The Republic tries to rebuild the once great region of Rushmore into a single unified, utopian society.

Nuclear Winter

It was cold, very cold. The snow and wind whipped across the young mans face. It had been like this now since his berth, something that had occured a long time ago...

It all begin in the southern portion of Rushmore, when the imperialistic government of Darmen invaded the Westlands, a part of Valladares seperated from the mainland. The War continued on for some time, both sides struggled to gain the upper hand, and thousands of soldiers died on both sides. Meanwhile, the entire Victorian-Pobedyvikan dispute flaired up once again, as Mytannion and Civil Citizenry waged all out war. Sargossa was putting down a revolution in Santazuela, while across Lake Branta, Saugeais and Branta Island were involved in yet another war.

All four wars put a strain on the Rushmori economy, sending the whole region into a recession. The average unemployment across the region stood at 24%, much higher in the countries at war. The one and only country that seemed to be doing well was Falconfar, isolated in space. Krytenia, struggling to revitalise what had once been the most powerful economy in the region, decided to seize an oppritunity that its leaders couldn't resist. The invasion of Civil Citizenry occured somewhere around 2025, and it took Krytenia only six weeks to take control of the Falconfar-Rushmori Space Bridge, and the invasion of Falconfar was finished in only four months. At least that's how the story went.

With Civil Citizenry out of the way, Krytenia and Mytannion formed an aliance. Astograth, which bordered Krytenia and what had been Civil Citzenry, viewed the alliance between Krytenia and Mytannion, as a very real threat to their own sovereignty. Fearing a much larger scale war, Astograth, Cotdelapoms, Swartaz, and Polar Islandstates signed a treaty of mutual defense, and that area of Rushmore remained relatively peaceful for sometime.

Meanwhile, Darmen had finally called upon the other members of the Southern Rushmore International Treaty of Defence Organization; Carmadin, Elmonia, and Fidishwa, to help in its war against Valladares. The extra manpower overwhelmed the Valladars, and they quickly capitulated to the superior members of SRITDO. The Westlands were annexed by Darmen, while mainland Valladares was given to Carmadin.

Sargossa had quickly put down the rebellion in Santazuela, and Saugeias had done the same with Branta Island. But while the two countries were in the process of putting down their respective rebellions, the Saugeians had accidently fired on a Sargossa warship in Lake Branta, believeing it to be a rebel ship. After failing to realise their mistake, and let alone apoligise, the Sargossans responed with quick and deceisive action, invading Saugeais.

Saugeais appealled for help, and the alliance led by Astograth, came to the rescue. The Sargossans couldn't handle the overwhelming strength of the alliance, and they soon followed the same course that Civil Citizenry, Falconfar, and Valladares had previously taken.

Another Di Bradini Cup and another disappointment. In their second U21 World Cup, Estope is still yet to win a game. Bears Armed, which is a team of bears, was the latest team to score a victory over Estope, 1-0. While that may seem close, it never really was. The team can not that bad, can they? They have virtually everyone returning from last years squad but yet they seem to have no chemistry and just can't work together. Losing to a quality team is one thing but to lose to a team of animals is an entirely different situation. This has to be an all time low for the team. Manager Alonzo Martim is the person who should take the blame and suffer the consequences. Estope Soccer Association president, Stephen Reinhold, has announced that he and the board will review Martim's job status at the end of this tournament. Of course this could all be very premature. After all this is just the second year Estope has had a team and building up a program will take a long time. This tournament is far from over but losing to a team of bears is never a good sign.

ENTRY 2521, OCTOBER 28TH 2023

We leave for Starblaydia in a fortnight, and after the time I've spent with the team, I finally have an idea about their strengths and weaknesses. The two goalkeepers, Thomas Hohmann and Laurentiu Matei are both very similar. Both are excellent shot stoppers but have awful distribution. In almost every training session I've been to, I've been subjected to the sight of Thomas kicking the ball from his goal, right into the hands of his opposite number on the other side and Laurent sending his goal kicks flying into the stands. It's frustrating. Although Florin has the goalkeeper coaches working on it, I fear we could ultimately suffer in Starblaydia if it continues. Apart from this, both keepers have their separate issues. Thomas doesn't maintain a big enough presence in the box, rarely shouting or instructing his defenders. I've talked to him about this, but he remains silent when practicing set pieces. Laurentiu on the other hand has problems with his positioning. The number of goals he's conceded during free kick practice is alarming. The coaches assure me the problem will be solved before we leave the country, but I have my personal doubts. I have yet to decide on who will play in Starblaydia. Rotation is an option, but I'd rather we have a constant presence in goal. I will probably only make the decision the day before our first game against Slembana. Oliver Souquet, our third goalkeeper has failed to turn up at a single training session thus far. I've tried contacting him both directly and via the FA. The FA claims he's in hospital receiving treatment for a twisted ankle. I've tried asking the FA for a replacement, but I haven't received a reply. Here's hoping we don't encounter any goalkeeper injuries in Starblaydia.

Defensively we look very solid. My two first-choice fullbacks; Christian Bruchhagen and Thorsten Ortmann have impressed me greatly. Both have very good pace and maintain a very good idea of when to attack and when to stay back and maintain the back-line. I don't have many if any qualms about these two. They possess good confidence, and don't seem to have any problems at the moment apart from the occasional slip-up. The coaching staff are working on their concentration. The two other fullbacks give me mixed conclusions. Rudolf Lindner on the right looks very bright. He's not as fast as Christian, but his attacking instincts are there for all to see, and he's definitely capable of moments of sheer brilliance. I expect him to give Christian a good run for his money. Kristian Boese on the other hand concerns me. A right-footed left back, he is perhaps one of the slower players on the squad, and his marking is just awful. It's slowly improving, but I don't see him being used unless it's a real emergency. When paired with Alexei Iancu on the left wing though, his game really picks up. Alexei seems to like playing with him as well. I may consider using the pairing if we qualify early for the Second Round. The centre-backs have given me headaches. One player however is a shoe-in; Niculae Mutu. Nick is short, but makes it up with his sheer strength and speed, and in addition to that he possesses superb concentration. His only problem of course would be his height, but this would be hopefully negated by the kid I choose to stick next to him. For now, Lukas Gramlich seems like the next best CB. His heading is superb, and his tackling is pretty good. One extreme deficiency though, that not only I but the players have noted is his sheer lack of discipline. Not the yellow/red card problem, but positional discipline. He often goes wandering off, leaving a gaping hole in defence. His concentration leaves a lot to be desired as well. Just the other day he switched off, either ignoring/not hearing a call by the keeper, and slotting the ball in for a beautiful own-goal. I have big hopes that he can learn, but he seems far too stubborn to take in any advice. Paul Heinrichs has really impressed me. When he came in for the first session, he looked soft and unsure. He's evolved into a very confident centre-back, and he seems to have gained some speed too. However, he still has quite a few weaknesses and I cannot risk pairing him with Nick. They're both the same height and I need someone to provide height at the back. And that leaves me with Florin Leca. The guy seems to get teased and made fun of almost every day by his teammates, and he's not taking it very well. On the pitch, he's almost a disaster. He's soft, really soft. I don't even know why he's a centre-back. Not only that but his tackling is average at best. He doesn't bring anything special to the team, except comic relief perhaps. His only friend on the team seems to be Alexei. Come to think of it, everyone likes that guy.

Our midfield is an... interesting case. To put it straight, there's a lot of hard-working guys in it, but there's almost zero creativity. The one player who possesses some good vision coupled with passing/crossing ability is Alexandru Ilie, and he's supposed to be an inverted winger. I have not given up on the idea of playing him as a central midfielder. In fact, he came up to me the other day stating his desire to play centrally. I would love to have a playmaker in the middle, but Alex isn't physically built to play in the tough midfield. He possesses height, but not much strength. Yet ideally I wouldn't have him on the wing either, as he possesses no speed. Well, he does, but he never runs. The lad's giving me a headache as I don't know where to play him, but his technical ability is something we NEED. Adrian Branescu too is a shoe-in. People can say all they want about his discipline, but he's vital to our defensive stability, particularly if Lukas keeps roaming around mindlessly. HIs workrate, aggression and determination is simply unmatched in the team. He can get a bit hot-headed, but I'm pretty sure I can keep him on a leash, of sorts... His partner for most of his career in the double pivot has been Ralf Engert, but frankly I don't want someone who's too similar alongside Adrian. Ralf is everything Adrian is except the terrible discipline, and isn't really on par with Adrian's tackling. If I don't go with Ralf or Alex, I'll probably go with Daniel Vastag. Danny has decent tackling and defensive abilities, and is much more forward-minded, and also possesses some good ball control, vision and passing. There's not much wrong with him actually, except perhaps the fact he's unspectacular. Could just be what we need though! Alexei Iancu's similar to Alex, except that he isn't on the same level technically. Physically though, he's much better. The team often complain about him being 'too fast'. Thing is, I need that. I need him to bring the ball forward because at least for now, the team looks reluctant to go forward too much. He's capable of some really good stuff, and has a pretty good weak foot. Scored from the corner flag the other day too! I really have the urge to play Seb Langer. His dead-ball ability is superb, he has decent speed, and his workrate is excellent. Unfortunately he's still recovering from an operation he had, so I might be unable to play him until the last group game. Johann Muhlegg is really raw. Nobody knows about him, which means he could be a good super-sub, but for now I'd rather leave him on the bench. He has the potential to turn into something really special though. All I can say about Dolph Klaus is he should really have become a kung-fu master instead of a footballer. His high kicks and screams are something you'd usually see in some classic martial arts flick...

Up front I've pretty much decided on playing Karl Brehme with Timothy Libor. Karl's head is made of gold I tell you, he's a superb header of the ball. He's good with his feet as well, and his workrate is excellent. His hold up play is pretty good and well I can't really find any real faults, except for his tendency to get pretty hot-headed when something goes wrong. And well, he's pretty one-footed. I haven't seen him score or pass with his left foot before. The same can't be said about Tim. He's comfortable with either of his feet, and his dribbling and technique is excellent. My only issue with him is his selfishness, which is a huge shame because he actually has really good vision which he doesn't put to good use. Not only that, but, well, he goes for glory way too often. It annoys the hell out of the team, and myself. Mihai's a really good specimen. He's almost on the same level as Karl, and he's 4 years younger. I think he'll probably end up being a better footballer than Karl, but for now, he's a bit too young for me to play him the full 90. Konrad has good potential. He tends to just barge past defenders, and is quite the clinical finisher. He's pretty tall, but he's yet to learn how to use his height to his advantage. However, the chemistry between Karl and Tim is too valuable. My decision about that is final.

The Ferdullaele Post

Left Seeing Stars

Today was a sad day for Farf football, with our U-21 team losing, in a totally deserved way, against Starblaydia. However, there are many sad days for our football, so we shouldn't worry that much. The game was a shut-out for Starblaydia, team that scored two goals easily and could've scored more against just a Ragnere shot that hit the crossbar and went out.

La Negruyrojite actually started playing really well, with Ragnere leading the team forward and Østergård causing some problems to the Starblaydi defense. Ragnere tried to occasionally drive some Starblaydi mad with the sweepball, but to no use: they had total concentration on the game, something our team totally lacked and still lacks. Østergård got a few passes through, with the best one being a one-touch-heeled pass that went through Ferrucio's legs and ended up in Di Stefano's feet, who shot wide and without any precision. The team failed to understand each other, only von Heim and Østergård seemed to try to lead the team forward a bit against the every time more threatening Starblaydi attack wave. Things were getting a bit dull, at least for us who didn't see the goal for ten minutes. The purple team started gaining dominance as our momentum quickly faded away. Only fifteen minutes had passed on the referee's watch and we already had to suffer. Daokō started leading the team out of our box after some time. He seemed to be the only one capable of dribbling a player or two. Soon, we at least got some counterattacks to scare the Starblaydis a bit. However, on the twenty-seventh minute, Starblaydia would open the score and take the lead maginificently, and very late when you analyze how the match had been up to then. Rodundo took the ball outside the box. He looked up and sent an aerial through pass to Natrione. The pass left Krupin, who had jumped to head it away, in an awkward position. He couldn't do a thing as Natrione dribbled Daokō and then Guldbrandsen. He opened the score with a really beautiful goal. The team started playing even worse after that. Not even Daokō could get out of our side of the field, and Østergård was a complete stranger to those who had to pass him the ball. Starblaydia kept shooting from afar and even from inside the box, even though we had eight players inside it, without counting the goalkeeper. To our relief, the referee would blow the whistle without adding injury time, after Starblaydia started to deserve a goal or two more.

Then, we went to play the second half with the team unchanged. This was to the surprise of everyone, as the game had been easily one of the worst of the U-21's short life. Obviously, Starblaydia took advantage of this. They continued their attack hegemony and we couldn't do a thing. Rodundo and Natrionne were a nightmare to our defense, we continued suffering them until, on the fifty-second minute, another goal arrived. Natrionne took the ball outside the box and sent a through pass to Rodundo, who went down the flank and crossed. The cross was found by Constantini's head, who had substituted Stark. She headed it in in a missile-esque way and there was nothing left for Guldbrandsen to do but watch it go in with impotence. There was a lot of minutes left, and we would suffer all of them. Starblaydia started attacking more and more, we were nothing but a team that could just pass it to Østergård and wait for the best, which would never come. He did, however, create some trouble to the Starblaydi defense. As on the seventeenth minute he took the ball in the midfield and started dribbling players, soon one went down because of a sliding tackle, another one was dribbled and he soon found Ragnere helping him. The two players had to face four Starblaydis on the counterattack. They started passing the ball and dribbling, it seemed like the result was the other way round. Soon, Østergård found a little space between players and sent a through pass to Ragnere, who chipped it over Prinns. Just as all Farves were celebrating and all Starblaydis lamenting, the ball hit the crossbar and went out. That was the final hit, the knock-out. The one chance they had and it hit the crossbar. It had been spectacular, but it wasn't meant to be, apparently. Still, it would've been extremely unfair if it had gone in. After that, we started playing even worse than before, Starblaydia started gaining shots from anywhere and we couldn't help but check how much time there was left in our watches. The Farves were just waiting for it to end, there wasn't much to do. On the ninetieth minute, the referee was merciful and finished the second half just as he finished the first one: without injury time.

A rare mix between disappointment and relief could be seen on the faces of our players. Only Østergård and Ragnere seemed to be the ones with different faces. They weren't relieved at all, but simply sad. On the press conference, most admitted to be relieved of not losing by more against the home team and that thanks to that we still had chances. Truth is, if they continue playing like that, we won't have chances. It'd be better to just give up and go home with walkover losses.

Best Player
Vasilije Østergård
7/10

Let's point out that by Best Player we mean best Farf player. Østergård was the only one, along with Ragnere, who caused some problems to the Starblaydi defense. He created a few chances and got us some possesion and momentum at times. His dribbling was precise and he never gave up. However, it takes more than one man to win, and this wasn't the case, as he didn't spread it. He never gave up, but even then he was a bit imprecise with the ball and could've been better, so he's not a 9 or a 10, and as we lost humiliatingly, not an 8 either. However, he seems to have some future and we should be happy for it.

Worst Player
Jens Krupin
2/10

No need to point out anything on this one. He was simply horrible. The right back couldn't head out a ball for the first goal and couldn't mark Rodundo either on the second one. His task didn't sound really difficult, but apparently it was, or he just simply sucked. He wasn't neat with the ball either, often choosing to clear it instead of passing it to teammates that were totally free of mark. He just wasn't enough, and in The Ferdullaele Post, we hope he gets replaced soon. Dollarfatuyi is a good replacement, as he's won the starting position at Feardallis' Wanderers.

"We lost, Jyvx."

"I know, Aaron. It's not a good start to the 25th Di Bradini Cup, which is the World Cup for football players aged 21 and under."

"We could have been in our team's squad for this if we had decided to become footballers. We're both only nineteen."

"Yeah. How good are your football skills, mate?"

"They're good. Yours?"

"Better than yours, probably."

"You think so?"

"I know so."

"What was the score?"

"We lost 1-0."

"Against who?"

"Burchadinger."

"Who? Their name sounds more like one belonging to some sort of fruit bar, rather than one belonging to a country."

"I know what you mean, dude. I know what you mean. I heard that Burchadinger had been a "dead" nation for quite a long time, before it revived itself and entered this DBC. I think they've also entered the next World Cup."

"Interesting."

"Yeah. I believe that the last World Cup they entered before their "death" was the 59th. Or the 60th. It's one of those two editions. I think it's probably the 59th."

"Cool. Bye Jyvx."

"Bye Aaron."

Stan Sarault stared down his opposition from the Mytanars. Some of the faces he recognized; playing against them for Athletik Thessia had been great, as AT was the best team in Mytannion. It was only the 3rd minute into this contest between Sicoutimont and Mytannion, and the scoreline read 0-0. Sarault had played in international tournaments before; the Under 15 World Cup 2 years ago was one of them, and he might even get onto Sicoutimont's World Cup 63 team, along with Lucas Dandenault. Sarault will be 19, and Dandenault 16 at that time. Sarault jumped back into the play after the whistle, but the Mytanars won the ball. Henrik van Senisnen got around the Sicoutian defence line, and pumped a heavy shot right at Artyom Bergeron. Making the save, Bergeron got the ball to Lucas Dandenault. Sarault, although only 3 years older than Dandenault, thought that Lucas played the game with amazing skill. He couldn't be Girard Giroux 2.0 even if he tried, however. Dandenault was similar to Sarault, in that they both wanted the spotlight. Lucas took a strike pass straight up the middle too Bonne Jones. Bonne? How did you pronounce that, Sarault wondered? Well, Sarault had had to have tried a thousand differant ways. Bo-one? Bonny? Whatever. All that mattered was if he was good, and he was a solid midfield. A solid strike from him came in the 18 yard box, but the Mytanar keeper, Steven Wallinaar, kept it out. Play continued like this for the rest of the first half, and nothing major really occured at Bekkside Arena in Starblaydia, at the Di Bradini Cup.

The Sicoutians jumped the gun for the 2nd half, however. Shots galore on Wallinaar, and he put in a great effort to keep the score nil all. But it was all for naught when in the 72nd minute, Stan Sarault pounced on the ball. Receiving it from Marcus Lalond, he charged through the Mytanar defence, getting all the way past the 18 yard box. A fake punt here, a move here, he finally broke free from the herd of Mytanars covering him. Finally, kicking with his bad leg, the left one, he managed to chip a toe punt over Wallinaar for a 1-0 lead for Team Sicoutimont. As the game continued, Les Royales kept pressuring on the offense, right until the 76th minute. At this point, the team was moved back into the defensive zone, playing heavy defence for the final 14 minutes of the match. The Mytanars tried to draw even, and probably would have in the 91st minute, the final one of extra time in the game. Patrik Vesely, Sarault's Athletik Thessia teammate, heaved a final effort at the net. Midfield Alonso Davis just tapped the ball with the edge of his boot, but it went straight up towards the goal! Bergeron, diving, was able to get a hand on it to ensure the win 1-0 for Sicoutimont. In other Group G action, Polar Islandstates defeated Ko-oren 2-0. This result puts the Sicoutians 2nd in Group G after 1 matchday, which would be qualification. However, with 2 matches left, against Ko-oren tonight and Polar Islandstates after that, anything can happen.

A White Knight For A Dark Horse

"Well, that was chaotic." Benjamin said. "I know, they didn't even send a coach for us." Darren replied. "Well, technically most of us are fifteen or older. So we're old enough to conduct ourselves outside the country." Karim pointed out. "Yeah, and Alexandra did step up as interim coach. I mean it made her have to sit out the entire game, but she pulled through!" Peter said. "But that isn't really the point," Byron began. "The VSC didn't care enough to send a coach, and they left us fending for our lives out there. We may have only won because we had the element of surprise!"
"That may be true, but we also had no practice time, no set rotations, no starters, no help, and no sleep." Alyssa said. "If you ask me, we had more things working against us than for us."

Alexandra Baker was busy talking to the VSC, with some of the others eavesdropping
"But you're the ones that pulled us in at the last minute."
"Yes I'm aware that most of the soccer players are over in Calvarie right now."
"Yes, I know the World Cup starts soon."
"But that's no excuse."
"The storm has nothing to do with it, you should have sent a coach with us, not waited to send one on a different flight, only to see that the flight had been cancelled"
"Of course I know soccer isn't the biggest priority for the VSC. But if this was Calvarie or Oakbrook, the Protectorate Soccer Board would have no problem supporting us"
"Obviously I realize that this isn't Oakbrook or Calvarie."
"The fuck does that have to do with anything. You have 13 year olds here without an adult."
"Yes, I know that 20 is the age for adulthood in Vettrera. But we need a mature person here."
"Well you could have just said that in the first place and we wouldn't have had this conversation."
"Yes, sir."

"So what happened?" Antione asked. "Well I just wasted ten minutes of my life arguing with the VSC only to find out that they're sending a supervisor in the morning. So I suggest we all go to our hotel rooms and call it a night."

The next morning, the team went down for breakfast and could not believe their eyes at what they saw.
"Hey y'all" said Nation Midfielder, Tomas Hardwick.
"You're our coach?" asked Aquilla.
"Umm..no honey. Consider me your teacher, cause some of y'all need to be schooled."
"We haven't even had breakfast yet..." said Dave.
"Everyone sit down."
They all took a seat in the dining room.
"You all, are the least experienced team in the group. You're here with a volatile Burchadinger team, a historic Vilita & Turori squad, and a Slembana team who banned gridiron at one point and supported soccer wholeheartedly.

Parker suppressed a laugh.

"No matter how mad you are at this tournament, no matter how unprepared the Soccer Commission had you come here, no matter how dismal our soccer history is, you have managed a draw against a powerful team. You have this chance to prove that the future of Vettrera Soccer is bright. You have a chance to let your light shine. You are the Dark Horse team, and I am you White Knight. Now giddy up."

"Ponies? For true?"

"Ayyuh... Well, except that some of their people can fly, although I don't actually know offpaw hwhether there are any of those in their team here..."

"Hwhat?!?"

"Ayyuh. Oh, and their country's
adult team has played a number of games against the team from the other Bears, so they've already got people who know about how to face Ursines on the field who might have advised this squad."

"Urrgah!
"But at least they aren't Chaos-tainted, hrright?"

"Hrright."

Population = just under 20 million. Economy = only Thriving. Average Life expectancy = c.60 years. If the nation is classified as 'Anarchy' there still is a [strictly limited] national government... and those aren't "biker gangs", they're traditional cross-Clan 'Warrior Societies', generally respected rather than feared.
