In Charellia Halloween is a popular tradition imported from other nations. There was one year when concerned parents tried to stop the handing out of candy. The resulting march of angry children has since become an annual Halloween parade.

The most popular Halloween costume this year is expected to be, once again, Alphonse. Children who are interested in current events are expected to dress up as the Pirate Queen Captain Ulvaeus, submarines and goldfish.

Generally, Halloween is only celebrated by the Humans, we Saurisians celebrate something far, far different. It is called Blachtdrak or Blackdragon Night in the English tongue. Its origins stretch back thousands of years to an ancient Drakònian legend concerning the rise of the great and terrible Blachtis, Night Lord of Darkness and Shadow.

According to the legend, in his time, Blachtis was a powerful Dragon Lord who commanded great respect and ruled over a sizable portion of the Drakrael (Dragonrealms). In addition, he had massive amounts of power and excelled in the magic arts. Unfortunately, he was a cruel being, ruling over his subjects with an iron claw while his ever-loyal priests carried out his terrible rule amongst the Civlæ.

He was eventually challenged by the great Civlæ hero and demigod Spyro Fæìa. By this time, Blachtis himself had become a demigod in all his power and lust for wealth and destruction. The two did battle atop High Hothàr, then the highest mountain in all of the Dragonrealms. The duel was great and terrible, so much that the mountain was shattered from the immense powers summoned by the two during their fighting. At last, Spyro had succeeded in defeating his enemy, the great dragon plummeting to his death atop the ridges of the mountain, shattering them from his immense size and power.

Unfortunately, he had only succeeded in destroying his physical body, his soul surviving. Unable to take physical form, he only deals out death and destruction indirectly and he has his ever-loyal servants, who had dispersed after their Lord was defeated, to carry on his terrible will ever after.

It is from this legend that sprung the popular story that on certain nights every year, Blachtis' soul comes down to wreak havoc and steal the souls of those unfortunate enough to come within his path. It is from this story that the popular custom of donning costumes on those special nights every year appeared, in order to fool Blachtis and ensure that he would move on and not steal individuals' souls. This tradition has carried on until every October 31, Drakònian youth dress up and go door to door to get candy and other treats. This tradition may have stemmed from the tributes given to Blachtis when he ruled over the subjected peoples in his day.

After the Unification Wars, this spread to the Saurians and other peoples and nowadays many Saurisians celebrate Blackdragon Night. Of course, the Ponies also celebrate Nightmare Night and the Humans celebrate Halloween, which are somewhat similar but not quite.

Yes, many Xiphonians celebrate Halloween. People usually dress up as scary monsters, aliens, their favorite fictional characters, athletes, etc. There is trick-or-treating involved, but many adults, young adults, college students, and teens hold or attend halloween parties.

However, many dangerously right-wing people disagree with Halloween. They think that it needs to go away because they think Halloween is evil.

Halloween, known as "Haunting Day" in Ziketonia, is regarded as a federal holiday. Every year, there is a big parade through the capital city of Mittengrad featuring people in their Halloween costumes. After the parade, a countless amount of parties are held while kids go trick-or-treating. Every night, at midnight, a televised costume contest is held at the Imperial Castle. For every category except Grand Blue Ribbon is voted upon by the public via online voting or ballots right at the Castle. Grand Blue Ribbon, however, is chosen by the Royal Family.

Unlike most ultra-right nations with extreme religious cowtowing, we do not ban or persecute the celebration of Halloween. WE EMBRACE IT.
Let's start with the basics. In TurtleShroom, it isn't called "Halloween", but "All Hallows' Eve". All Hallows' Eve is the most popular secular holiday in TurtleShroom, and an official national holiday since 1962.

The truth behind All Hallows' Eve is well known. All Hallows' Eve is a pagan holiday of death and evil, where the barrier between Hell, ghostly realms, spirit worlds, alternate universes and the mortal plane are at their thinnest. (Read on, because we actually combat that behind the festivities.)

We never fought it, though. We stole it. The Church, at the dawn of TurtleShroom, took Halloween by the pumpkins and completely and totally beat the smack out of the filthy pagans' attempts to keep the holiday as theirs! (-and it was easy, what with the sorcery bans and what-not.) For a while, then, All Hallows' Eve was nothing but a precursor to All Saint Day (November 1st), which TurtleShroom acknowledged despite it being Catholic in origin (Catholics never appeared in TS in any sizable number until the 1920s).


When pop culture got ahold of it, though, it took off beyond all compare. Starting in the 1930s when TurtleShroom's absolute wealthiest crowded to see imported USA movies (technology that the Free Market finally made profitable that year), "Halloweenie movies" have always been a box-office smash.

Halloween is a time of family fun, costume creativity, and increased police presence. It is unlawful to dress as Satan or a demon (to this day), but by and large, there are few restrictions. The state taxes the sale of costumes to encourage thrift and save raw materials, adding to our culture's belief that Halloween costumes for sale are a waste of money.


Every year, the government issues its Halloween Proclamation at the midnight on October 30th. Per law, the Stock Exchanges and banks are closed. By choice, schools and most workplaces (companies that don't close on holidays tend to face angry employees looking elsewhere for work) do so as well.

Halloween correlates and is very close to Founders' Day- the date which the Constitution of TurtleShroom was ordained -which adds to the celebratory hype and the festivities that make October such a joyous time.


All three species celebrate Halloween in near identical fashion, except that mushrooms can not consume candy.

Traditionally, Halloween consists of trick-or-treating at dusk, costume parties, and church gatherings. The Church is the largest player in Halloween; most creatures don't live in cities and lack the ability to trick-or-treat, so the Church combines spreading Jesus with free candy, and the locals from all over gather for an all-night celebration, followed by a worship service on All Saint Day. Patrons from all over go to their local church for a simulated trick-or-treat for the ultra-rural youth and adults. Since candy is a luury, they usually just opt to distribute candy corn, since it literally is penny candy.
(Turtles are especially fond of candy corn.)

There are parades, parties, celebrations and festivities, fairs, carnivals, contests, games, and don't forget the tourism and the casinoes. There's no party like an All Hallows' Eve casino party! Whoopee!



The Board of Censors is largely in control of the regulation and enforcement of Halloween codes and regulations. Primarily, they publish an annual "Forbidden Costume List" to the police. (The fine is forfeiture of all acquired candy. This is enforced by the Inquisition.)
However, the Board of Censors also plays a major role in the regulation and screening of "Halloweenie movies".

A movie classified as a "Halloweenie Movie" receives a special coding alongside its usual content rating. Denoted by "AHE", Halloweenie Movies can only be shown in October, and can only be sold from October 1st to two days before Thanksgiving Day. This is because it takes the Board of Censors that long to edit immorality from a movie, or to ban it. The process for allowing Halloweenie Movies is, by their very nature, an extreme difficulty. Halloweenie Movies tend to deal with the occult, with witchcraft, and with unnatural and villanious things. They are subject to extensive examination for weeks, even months, leading up to their ultimate approval for screening or their banning.

So yes, to put it mildly, Halloween is huge in TurtleShroom. It is the largest secular holiday in the country.


-but there's one last aspect of Halloween that you need to know, and that is one that traces to its original use. Remember that All Hallows' Eve is believed to be the day when the boundary between mortal world and other, wicked or dangerous realms (such as ghosts and Hell) are at their thinnest.

TurtleShroom takes this very seriously, and we have elite police and military squadrons that patrol the entire week leading up to Halloween to prevent anything stupid or evil from happening. Vampires, monstors, and demons have had confirmed sightings in TurtleShroom for generations, and all of these always try to get in on Halloween. We know from experience.

These elite squadrons are under plausible deniability. They are essentially death squads for the occult. Vampires, demons, monsters, zombies, ghouls, ghosts, and anything that goes bump in the night that isn't a kid in costume will be shot on sight. (We differentiate kids in costumes from the real deal with very expensive and intricate equipment that detects the paranormal. Emphasis on expensive.)
Witches and sorcerers, likewise, either surrender or get shot on sight. The witchcraft arrests are always the highest on Halloween, and with their powers enhanced, some sorcerers try and fight back. That's what we have death squads for the occult for in the first place.
(To prevent endangerment of citizens, it is illegal to dress as a witch, warlock, sorcerer, or wizard for Halloween.)


While the citizens play all night, TurtleShroom's government is up to its ears fighting paranormal activity and the constant nuisance of filthy pagans trying to take back their holiday. It's always the worst in October.

This year, however, because of the war, we had to... cancel Halloween. This is because most of the cops are conscripted. It's simply too dangerous to let kids, teenagers, and others of all species frolick about in the dead of night in the most dangerously occultist day of the year. -and not only that, there's the very real, very mortal threat of pedos, axe murderers, death, food poisoning, and getting hit by trains, to name a few. Even though most of our citizens own a gun, TurtleShroom is not a safe place to be at night without a police presence. The size of the nation, the thickness of the jungles, the dangers and secrets of the swamps and deserts... these are all too great to make Halloween safe without constant police presence. -and the drug cartels WILL kidnap our nation;s youth if they get a chance.


We've never had to cancel Halloween, but this year, the war and saving our nation trumps running around in costume, eating candy corn, and fighting the occult. Even worse, the C'Tan are probably going to kidnap trick-or-treaters!

Halloween isn't celebrated here; the tradition was never imported. We, however, do celebrate a distinctly similar holiday called the Nightmare Night.

Like Halloween, the Nightmare Night is celebrated in October, though on October 22th rather than October 31th, and like Halloween, it is religious in nature. The Nightmare Night celebrates the legend of Nightmare Moon, a wrathful avatar of the Harmonist deity Luna who wanted to bring about eternal night a thousand years ago but was defeated. It is believed that Nightmare Moon's spirit returns to haunt the land on Nightmare Night, and to gobble up small foals. The only way to appease Nightmare Moon is to offer her a 'sacrifice' of candy, to satiate her appetites and prevent her from gobbling up ponies.

On Nightmare Night it is customary to dress in costumes and go trick-and-treating for candy, part of which is usually 'sacrificed' to an effigy of Nightmare Moon in the end of the celebrations. Besides the absolutely customary costumed trick-and-treating, cities, towns and villages all around the Herd have festivals and mass festivities, with costume parties, games including the obligatory apple bobbing, pranks, bonfire parties and other, usually horror-themed entertainment. Of course, the businesses are quick to cash in on Nightmare Night as well, and decorate their establishments in accordance with the holiday and offer various themed goods; and citizens love to decorate their houses as well, thus, for the whole one-week holiday the Herd looks like one big postcard from a horror-themed theme park.

The religious side of the holiday is also widely followed; after a night of partying and trick-treating the tired ponies flock into temples for services, meditation, sacrifices and prayer, usually venerating Luna over Celestia during those days, but especially honoring Celestia during the last day of the holiday, for defeating the malevolent Nightmare Moon. Some also fast during the holiday, but usually only very religious ponies, as it is hard to abstain from all the delicious candy and snacks one has accumulated during the trick-and-treating sessions.

We don't have Halloween, but we have adde (ah-day), our harvest festival. Children bob for apples, and can sing door-to-door for candy.

Hallows Eve' causes a huge market boom in the horror movie, costume, and candy departments, so Cruciland embraces it as another opportunity to keep the economy booming. (yes, we export luxury candies) Very extravagant costume parties and festivals often occur here as well, attracting many curious travelers to our whereabouts. Surprisingly, our tourism industry has seen a steady incline ever since other nations began to understand us. Many of them come from like-minded nations, although it is not un-heard of for citizens from illegitimate nations to come over here. We do not tolerate celebrating Hallows' Eve as a pagan holiday, however, because of the legality of other beliefs. Hallows' Eve is also a memorial day, where we pay homage to the dead. (like in Memento Mori, another death-related festival that was imported from Mexico)

Overall, Hallows' Eve is a both a reverent and fun time at Cruciland.

Halloween - also known as Nightmare Night - is an unofficial YellowApple, Inc. holiday celebrated in two distinct ways.

The first way involves families dressing up in costumes and wandering about residential neighborhoods for free candy. YellowApple, Inc. provides said candy at both domestic and international offices and facilities for local children, and many offices and retail stores (both within YellowApple and abroad) will convert themselves into "haunted houses" after the normal closing time, with employees (specifically, those who volunteer to participate) dressing in similar costumes and organizing various free carnival-style events. YellowApple, Inc.'s larger facilities (such as embassies, regional headquarters, factories, warehouses, and other facilities with large amounts of relatively-open space) will actually hold full-scale carnivals on their premises with rides, games, and food.

The second way involves young adults dressing up in less-conservative costumes (usually sexually-provocative, especially in the case of female costumes) and attending risqué Halloween parties at nightclubs. These invariably involve large amounts of psychoactive substances (primarily alcoholic beverages, cannabis, and lysergic acid diethylamide), loud music (usually dubstep, metal, techno, or some combination of the three, and usually live-performed), and sexual activities (ranging from exotic dancers in costume to - in extreme cases - semi-public monogamous or polygamous sexual acts among consenting individuals). Legend has it that, on the Halloween after the conclusion of the Second YellowApple-Angrivantis War, one such party blasted music of a sufficient amplitude for it to be heard groundside as the hosting city passed over Angrivantis.
