Tiaderonnar Celelynnas stood breathless and covered in the black blood of demons. How he had managed to survive the trap that had been laid for he and the rest of the demon hunters that had come looking to cleanse the area of the filth. Demons setting traps, this was a very bad sign indeed, as it meant that this was more than just a disorganized band as he had been hoping, but that there was some leadership and in fact discipline and tactics being deployed by that leadership. If one of the level five or six demons had escaped from the Hells, that made sense and could be dealt with, but if one of the feared level seven demons had escaped... well he did not want to even think about the consequences of that.

As it stood, he and the other eleven demon hunters had all managed to survive the trap, though a few of the hunters were injured and the youngling, Hérion Malmiriel, was going to need medical care soon for a severe gash across his chest. That just twelve of them survived an attack by at least four dozen demons was a testament to their skill and training, but Tiaderonnar knew that there was far more than just the band they encountered out here in the inhabited territories around the Vanorian commonwealth. He was sure there was an army of them out here, somewhere, using the deserted lands as a staging area to launch their attack on the Vanorian border. When he and the rest of the squad got back, Tiaderonnar would personally recommend to Tobias that the army be sent north to the wall and that the air fleet be scrambled.

For now, he pulled out a vial of holy water and began to treat his wounds and and purge the demonic stain from his weapons and himself. The other members began to do the same. Demon blood was poisonous to elves if not quickly washed away or purged with holy water. It was why this demonic army troubled Tiaderonnar, Tobias, and the High Priestess so. Even if they were to combat them, just them bleeding on their own warriors or the citizens would put them at risk for disease or worse. Even demon hunters, exposed to the demonic stain from the beginning of their training and over time to build up a resistance to it, still were at risk when they were overexposed to the substance. The walkers would provide the best defense, but that was only after the demons were over the wall or through the mountain passages. And if they were there, the damage they could cause was greater than any advantage the mechanical walkers provided.

No, Tiaderonnar knew that this invasion had to be stopped before it was even allowed to begin. The army would hold the wall if Tobias took his recommendation, and he would need to talk to the High Priestess as well. Tiaderonnar wanted the whole of his order to come with him one more time into these lands and Elune willing, one of the past heroes of the time. If Elune were to send one of the heroic spirits that she kept with her in the divine realm, then that would tip all the balance, especially if that hero was Jas Hatire, the first of the legendary "super soldiers", the order that predated the demon hunters. Jas fought demons, even level seven demons, in his lifetime, and if Elune were to grant her people this hero's service once more... well then Tiaderonnar just knew that this entire invasion would be destroyed before it was even allowed within ten miles of the wall.

Announcer: And now the moment you have all been waiting for…

It’s the Down & Out Show with your hosts Errant Dow’naithe and Kibber Ou’transco!

Down: With one of the biggest matches in Sea Dragon history just over an hour away, we are here to fill in all the info you have been waiting for.

Out: That’s right. Have a beer. Have a shot. Have a toke. Hell, have more than one. You will need them. We will lose.

Down. What a horrible thing to say. Here we are in the semis on home soil without The Holy Empire or the FSSO to contend with.

Out: You do remember the reason we don’t face one of those two don’t you? The bitch elves beat them. And now we are going to be forced to watch them play in their hot pink, scanty little kits… okay. That part isn’t all that bad.

Down: It would be nice if we managed another result like we did in the Qazox or Valladares matches.

Out: If we play that fast-paced against the damned elves we will get throttled. They are faster, quicker, and that is their style anyway.

Down: Okay so we play our usual game then. Hit ‘em hard and often.

Out: That will work only if we can catch them first.

Down: I still like our chances in this one. Their best player is hurt and ma not play.

Out: More embarrassing when they beat us then.

Down: Okay. What about the other semi? Do you like Valanora or Astograth?

Out: Neither I hate them both. But Valanora should win easily at home.

Down: I figured you would back Astograth as much as you hate elves.

Out: Let’s get this straight now. In the long list of things I hate these are the top five… 5- Kilts. Don’t those guys recognize a skirt when they see one. And who told them it was ok not to wear undies? 4. Hippies. For The Mother Star’s sake, she did let us invent several things of importance, namely razors and bathtubs. 3. Elves. The clean version of hippies. 2. Rushmore. Need I say more? And 1 Elves from Rushmore.

Down: Rushmore ranks that highly? And we even co hosted a World Cup with a Rushmori nation in QPeMA.

Out: Not my choice. And I had to stay drunk the entire time to enjoy it.

Down: You stay drunk all the time anyway.

Out: Not the point I was making.

Doing Things The Hard Way

One more match between the Mystical Unicorns and the shot at a second World Cup title. One more match for the chance to prove that the results of World Cup 53 were not completely a fluke. One more match for the chance at an all Elf Finals showdown.

They say the road to glory can be very tough, and it is really hard to imagine a much tougher road than we have faced thus far. The round of 16 pitted us against the number one side in the world and defending champs from The Holy Empire. We squeaked through on penalties. The Quarterfinals rewarded us with a chance to face the new power player in the game in the form of current runners up The FSSO, We escaped that match 1-0.

Now the semifinals takes us to Errion Vega to play another top seven squad in the form of the hosting Sea Dragons. One big name after another keeps coming. And if we manage a win in this one, we might just play Valanora in the Finals. Damn what a schedule.

Many people is the NSsporting world saw our Championship in World Cup 53 as a fluke and a gift from Margaret. If we can win it this time, we will have earned it in a way very few sides have ever had to face before.

Now to tackle the Sea Dragons
World Cup 53 Champions

Psychotic Dictatorship

Postby Astograth » Sat Sep 08, 2012 7:31 pm

Victory. He could hear it. He could smell it. Taste it. Touch it. Feel it all around him, and coursing through his veins, as he saluted the fans from high, lifted by Ansotegi and Bocandé. Defeated lay the old enemy, the Terns, the Polar Uharte-Estatua. And it was his doing, his final touch, that launched Astograth into a historic World Cup semifinal against the elven hosts themselves.

Soter Sarlange was there from the beginning. He was the only one, in fact. To face Polar Islandstates as a special invitee for their first-ever international - on the Ides of March, which would spark the eponymous Cup - Gartzen Treko lined up with Zernin Aira, now playing for Sporting Iturributa and the Iturributa NT; Odon Karrikart, close to retirement at Urbizania Wanderers; Petrigai Mendiroz, whose later years were much less glamorous than his glory days at Sporting Iturributa; Milian Erburu, who scored the winning penalty kick in the Cup of Harmony 50 final; Elatzar Orbizo, last seen trying his hand at management in Kagdazka; Urgutz Belarte, fallen from Olibondeka since Yaregi's appointment; Edorta Urrustoy, now taking Urbizania Wanderers to new heights after a brilliant career at Juvapanam; Egerdi Bordato, a key player in Astograth University's early years near the top of the First Division; Estebe Bularte, the captain who retired from football after a bleak World Cup 57 group stage; Soter Sarlange; and Dei Ormache, retired from the international stage on the cold ground of Northbrook.

Nobody who lined up in olive-green at the Angelotic Temple for Astograth's fourteenth match against the Terns was present, except for him. He remembered it like yesterday. The old Nasjonale, with half as much capacity, packed to the rafters with eager fans. The first appearance of the Ostkurven and their mascot, Ishmael the Arctic Tern. The goals, Urrustoy ramming a shot past Karlson only for van Jendrisen to tear apart the Astograthian defense and wrestle away the lead after assisting Ackermann-Finn and Berg. And then Sarlange's goal, of course, in the immediate aftermath of which he slammed his head against the post. He was 21 and Ituraitz FC's new starlet.

12 years later and he'd played 9 more matches against the Polarians, only missing three due to injury or it being the Brevity Challenge Cup, which Pieran had used as a proving ground for fringe players. Their next meeting was a mid-World Cup 55 qualifying friendly at Grand Duke's Stadium in Rumiatzi, which they'd embarassingly lost 2-0. Then they met for the World Cup 56 qualifiers, losing 3-1 at Grand Duke's despite an Ormache goal and drawing 0-0 at the Nasjonale, though Sarlange was left out of the latter for health concerns despite his vigorous protesting; in between, they drew 1-1 at the Nasjonale in the traditional mid-qual friendly that also served as a memorial for the ongoing Khuril Seaplane Disaster. It was in good spirits, and Sarlange remembered his wordless swapping of shirts with the unforgettable Timo Skye afterwards.

The next friendly, during the World Cup 57 quals, ended in a 1-1 draw in Rumiatzi, Sarlange scoring. A 4-0 humiliation at the Nasjonale followed for World Cup 58, Sarlange playing terribly and getting subbed off for Artzeiz Zornoza. Then three more losses in a row, excepting two Brevity Cup encounters that are Astograth's only wins, including the second round match in Polar Islandstates' Copa Rushmori X win. Some degree of pride was recovered in a friendly draw at Franz Josef City, but the point stood: if Sarlange couldn't win now, he would retire never having beaten the Terns. And if he lost, well, the Terns would have retired him from international football.

The Wizard, as he'd been labelled in his youth, wasn't about to let that happen.

He spied Urfstadt and Oyen-Spekke tense and move towards him as Galard swiped the ball from Elmsvikur's feet, the two Royal Rumiatzi men knowing each other's strengths. Two well-practice passes later and Lasuen was facing off with Hauge, chipping the ball for Sarlange rather than taking on Battle's experienced defensive midfielder.

It was his turn, then, to shine. With a burst of speed and a light shove, he got into position near the edge of the box, but his markers were at least as fast as him and caught up soon enough. No cheap dribble would be enough to bypass them, though the thick-set Ormache would probably have been able to do it. Backheel pass for Unzueta, turn inside and run to narrowly beat Oyen-Spekke in the air and head the high cross to put Astograth ahead.

Or at least so it should have happened, but Lars Hegg Gammel was on the same retirement stipulations as Sarlange and was having none of it either, not just saving but catching it midway through the air. Sarlange denied again, as he'd been all game; another Big Chance gone to waste. He squatted down to catch his breath, but quickly noticed nobody else was. The 71 thousand people in Longview - Polarians, Astograthians and neutrals - still held theirs, and only let it out when Ellis Elmsvikur took advantage of the counter-attack to round Adin and bury the opener, his Royal Rumiatzi teammate Larretape getting an insufficient touch on it.

Hurko Atristain lumbered to the centre-circle opposite a furious Sarlange. They were down now. Like so many times before, but on a much bigger stage.

He wasn't as experienced as his strike partner that night. He was, in fact, a relative newcomer to these derbies, though he'd scored the winner in Astograth's first win - in the final of the first Brevity Challenge Cup. It'd felt strange, what with him playing his club football there and all. It is indeed amazing what kind of bad blood can appear when men, friends even, who play and train together almost every week are divided by where they were born and pitted against each other.

And as an All-Astograthian Astograthian, the two best places for passion to take over are the World Cup or against the Polarians. Combining the two is taking things to an entirely different level. Staying clear of undercurrents other than those pertaining to football, the pain of seeing the Polarians run away with the Ides of March Cup year after year, no matter where, or being completely unable to best them in UICA and WCC competition, is strong indeed. It didn't matter that Atristain loved Red Star Severny and they loved him back. This was national pride at stake.

Well, that's the other funny thing. Elmsvikur, Petersen and Konovalov, to name just the ones in the squad, have made their entire careers in Astograth, all products of the Haapa-Mechelin Academy. Skye, Rochemback, Bielsen, Sanderskye, Moller, Aer are others who've plied their trade extensively in Astograth, and it goes both ways, with Ormache, Lekea, Legeren, Barta and others braving the North. Atristain knew most of the guys on the Polarian team. He saw them week-in, week-out, on TV or up close and personal. And Elmsvikur, well, wasn't that the most incredible thing. They'd teamed up at Urbizania Wanderers, become friends, and, after their exploits, earned big transfers. Eventually, they made their national teams.

And eventually, several years after parting ways in Urbizania as hopeful strikers, they faced off on Vanorian ground, tasked with taking their country to the World Cup semifinals. They greeted each other effusively before kick-off but saw little of each other on opposite sides of the pitch. Some fifty minutes in, only Elmsvikur was doing as was expected of him.

Some sixty minutes in, Guerrikaechebarria was almost brought down next to the byline by Juul, but the winger managed a cross just before losing his balance. Urfstadt didn't get to it, Sarlange obstructed Gammel's vision and Atristain duly matched his old teammate.

He set down the ball. This was it. What his life had quite possibly all been leading up to. One measly kick of the ball and it was all over. 120 minutes of play, plus the seven penalties taken up to this point would all fade into the background, while his would be embedded in the history of two rival nations; perhaps more in one than the other. He breathed deeply.

Gammel ahead. His save on Unzueta and Hauge's back post-slamming shot had given some life to the Terns after the misses from Kvitchenko, Lepka and Elsmvikur. This was a keeper from a world-class club with over 130 caps for his world-class national team. Guerrikaechebarria would have to be world-class to keep calm and bury this one.

Sarlange had shot low to the left, Gammel diving to the right. Atristain had shot low to the left, Gammel diving to the right. Unzueta had shot low to the left, Gammel diving to the left. Needless to say, Yaregi had drilled them to shoot low to the left - as hard as possible, since it didn't give the keeper time to react to the placement - in their next shootout. That it would drive the keeper crazy, wondering if this was indeed a constant pattern or they'd switch it up at some point. It seemed to work.

The clip of Ormache's missed penalty against Kandorith at the Baptism of Fire, which would've likely meant Astograth's advancement, repeated itself in Guerrikaechebarria's head, including the commentator's shout thinking it'd gone in and then his disappointed laments. He could be the new Ormache in that sense. It'd even been shot low to the left.

Gammel clapped his gloves and shook himself about. Then, just as the referee blew his whistle, he took a single step to the right and pointed left. Oh God. Oh God. Turned tables. Mind games. Oh God. Seconds to decide. Everyone watching, everyone pending.

Then Guerrikaechebarria thought of something stupid, ridiculously cheeky, and at the time it must've seemed like a good idea. He ran up and chipped it down the middle, the ball hitting the bottom of the crossbar and bouncing just past the line as Gammel fell right and, realising his mistake, dove the other way and slapped the ball out of his goal after one bounce.

The penalty was already awarded, though, and Lekubegi Guerrikaechebarria breathed the sweet air of victory and a World Cup semifinal.

Jas Hatire could feel the summoning being done, with Elune's blessing of course. It seemed that Meliki was not in fact responsible for this demon uprising, but some other force was at hand here, one that Elune herself had never felt before. Jas knew that not only was his goal in being sent back to the material realm was to defeat these demons that threatened his former homeland, but to discover the source of this power that the Goddess felt roaming the lands around the commonwealth. Jas knew the demons would be easy enough work, for he had slain them by the hundreds in his life time, even fought with one demonic army against another in the rise of Ragnarock. It was the fifth campaign of that war that his mortal frame had been defeated and his life ended, until he entered into the spiritual covenant with Elune. He, like many heroes of the Vanorian people before him, forwent the afterlife in the Gray Havens to transcend mortality and cotinue their existence in the spiritual realm, forever immortal, unable to truly be killed. If ever he were to be killed while back in the mortal realm, his spirit would simply reemerge back in the spiritual realm, making them the eternal guardians of their homeland. Only the most proven and virtuous of warriors were said to be given that honor and Jas felt compelled to accept when the Goddess offered it to him.

Now he would be returning for a third time since his death, though it had been many decades since last he was summoned. That time however had did nothing to dull his senses and ability in combat, for he trained vigorously with the other heroes, so that they would be sharp and ready if ever the call for their service was made. Jas knew he was to work with the demon hunters, the sect of warriors that eventually replaced his own brigade of warriors, known as super soldiers later in time. Back in his time they simply were the elite of the army, masters of both combat, strategy, and survivability. They had trained, had been tasked and tested to prove their worth, and when they had, they were given magically reinforced armor and deployed to where their skills where needed most. Never did more than two dozen of the sect be in any one place, as that would not be a good use of their skills.

Those days were long gone though and not the warriors were trained with guns or magically enhanced bows and blades. Each elf seemed to have a task, a specific thing they trained and relied on others to make up for their own shortcomings. There was advantages to that Jas had to admit, but he was not sure it would have worked in his time. At least these warriors had the bravery and courage required, a dozen of them already making short work of a trap meant to slay them. It would be an honor indeed to fight with these warriors and protect his homeland once more.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tobias Raynor was hoping and praying that this plan was to work. The High Priestess was already preparing the summons of Jas Hatire to help augment the demon hunters that the Temple trained, now he was getting the Military Council to deploy the bulk of their forces to the wall, while a smaller force was patrolling the mountain passes in the northeast. If Tiaderonnar Celelynnas was to be believed, an entire demonic army was waiting out there in the wilderness, waiting to fall on the Vanorian lands and people whenever it tickled their fancy. Tobias swore that he would not allow that to happen and so he and the High Priestess listened to Tiaderonnar's suggestions and began their undergoing to bring them to a head.
What concerned Tobias the most though was that the World Cup was still ongoing, a week was left in the competition. In two nights time the Vanorian squad would be facing off with an Astograth side in Mar Sara, luckily far away from any potential demonic attack. The Final would be held in the capital a few days later and Raynor City to was far away from the northern border where the demonic presence had been reported and sighted time and time again. Perhaps that was fortunate then, the foreigners he was afraid for would have no reason to be anywhere near the potential attacks, if they somehow overtook the Vanorian military forces set out to prevent their advance.
The Marauders were giving the people a good distraction, they had reached this semifinal despite very difficult circumstances, facing both the sixth and third ranked teams in the world in the second round and then quarterfinals respectively. It only made sense that heroes like Soldarian, Fresco, va Drake, and the great Hawk would be leading the squad as a hero of the past was now being brought back to life to lead the Vanorian people to safety. Whatever it is, fate or destiny, it as an extraordinary thing to behold as an observer with the knowledge of what was happening in both fronts. It was perhaps even a needed thing, so not to produce panic, but to give people the hope and joy they so desired to make life worth living, even immortals as they were. Now the football squad like the forces being rallied to protect the people needed to take the last step towards finishing the job.
Tobias Raynor looked at the reports filtering in from the borderlands with care. As had been suspected, there was in fact a demonic army preparing an invasion of the Vanorian homeland, what remained a mystery though was their origins. All other demonic invasions at spun off from the depth of the Seven Hells, and thusly began their assault from outside of Char Sara at Mount Sumarja. That mountain was a very strange place indeed, not only was The Temple of the High Priestess there, but it also housed the portal to the Hells. Banishment to the Hells was considered a fate worse than death and only used in the most extreme of circumstances, most often an individuals crimes would not tempt the courts or whatever had dealt the verdict to give the accused the Hells, but banishment from Vanorian lands. It was a strange sort of dichotomy, the great strength of the faith of the Vanorian people and that which gave even an elf fear located at the same place.
Yet these demons were not from there if these reports were to believed, and why should he not believe them when they were coming from the mouth of Jas Hatire? The so called leader of this group was not a demon at all, nor any sort of known elven or human, but a mystical being of ichor and stone. How such an abomination even came to be Tobias would not even hazard a guess, but it had displayed cunning far beyond what any sort of elemental carnation did and that the demonic forces followed its lead maybe Tobias wonder if it were some sort of minor deity or if simply an accident of nature and magic.
Whatever the case was, it was clear that he needed to do something drastic. There were other problems pressing the nature besides this thwarted demonic invasion, though there were still bands of stragglers for the demon hunters to mop up. The Templara were in need of lands that could truly be called their own, Vyinta needed a closer relationship with the mainland, and Valanora could do with more than just a two ports from an easily blockaded route. It was time once more to expand the Vanorian holdings, whatever the risks involved. It would ensure further Vanorian safety and prosperiety, it had to be done, but first he had to convince the Military Council to back his plans. Then the rest of the region not to see the expansion as a show of force but rather a natural progression.
It was much akin to how the Marauders rose to become one of the best footballing sides in the world. It was a steady build up with a few strokes of brilliance from individuals to better the whole unit. Some of the pieces didn't exactly fit at first glance, but a great leader like a great manager of a side figured out how to incorporate all those pieces and bring out the best in them. It was almost funny that the Marauders were now just a single match away from being tied as the most successful World Cup nation in history, tied with their northeastern allies and rivals in Starblaydia. Yet another rival stands in their way, the elves of The Sylanvae Queendom, an off and on again opponent in the "Elven Cup". Tobias and the squad held a certain amount of respect for their fellow elvenkind, but this seemed to be destiny, a fifth World Cup title on home soil to tie the record of being the greatest ever. It was something written in the stars. Now the Marauders just had to see it out, for one last match in front of all those who wished it to be so in The Battleground.
What was life but a set of events followed in sequence? To what point was there to continuing on with every day, every week, every month, every year? What was there in a life of immortal to give inspiration, what was there to bring forth hope and desire? Emotions came and went, so what was there that drove Laborious Hawk forward?
Simply put, he wanted to be the best, day in and day out, in every aspect of his life. The best friend, the best son, the best teammate, the best elf, the best footballer. Whatever it was that was his focus at any given time, it was his will that drove him forward in that heartfelt goal of being the absolute best. Perhaps then it should not have came as a surprise to any inside the Battleground that fateful night that Hawk took a Marauder side on his shoulders, took an entire nation on there as well, and drove them forward to being the best of all time. Reflecting later he would feel remorse that the fellow elvenkind had been so humiliated by the display, but they were merely obstacles on his way.
It was not seven goals scored by him as legends and rumors would have, though a hat trick and an assist in the four other goals gave credence that he did indeed have a hand in every goal. A pair of his trademark thirty yard bomb set pieces in the first half gave the Marauders the halftime lead they desired. The Slyvanae scored in just the fourth minute of the second half, but it was a Hawk through ball to Fresco just a minute later that restored the two goal edge. Ten minutes passed before there was another set piece, this time from just twenty two yards out that he atypical went with placement over power and gathered his hattrick. A pair of cross field lobs to on onrushing va Drake in the eighty and eighty-fourth minute made the game a rout, before a final set piece delivered to the spot and headed in by Soldarian that finished off the game's scoring in the eighty-eighth minute.
It was a night of legends doing what they do, but for Hawk, it was just another day on his desire for being the absolute best in all things.
Tea Party #5
Postby Wight » Sat Nov 02, 2013 12:36 pm
THE TEA PARTY AT THE END OF THE MULTIVERSE
Seven Cardinal Sins & Four Last Things
The scene changed. It was still the bedchamber of Búa King of Uncertain Dimensions. He was still being attended by Leviathan in an uncomfortable human form, bearing the essence of Alastair I Frosticus, and Jimmy Costello, and Newtonian Olive, and the Mitrin Vega… and the giant dark monk, Saligia.
But now, the room was reminiscent of a lonely road out on the heath, where bitter winds and rains swept by the window and lashed against the panes. Desolate feelings of boredom, dead certainty, parsimony and sanctimony pulled at the soul and reminded Búa that the Seven Cardinal Sins were ever just a few millimetres of amorphous non-crystalline solid material away from condemning a man to Hell and high water.
It was the Lonely Road, winding through the highlands and islands of the Dante Archipelago toward Wight, and each man, woman and sentient animal would walk that path upon their death, in such a way as to confront their sins and reflect upon them, in order that they might be less ordinary, less bored, and less whiney, when they came to the final glory of an afterlife in hell.
Do you remember the journey of Mark Hampton, the murdered president of Bitternea? asked Leviathan of his friend and Adversary. It was on the Lonely Road that he met Boring Nora, the infernal whiner Chickenfoot, Esf the Lame who would not talk to underlings and the man without humour, Bastardo de Lûn.
Ah yes, says Búa, not to mention The Pale Imitations.
They reminisced on the story of the Seven Cardinal Sins and about living in hell for one eighth of an eternity with only two bluebottles for company, and Búa admitted that it would be tragic that future generations would not learn the lessons contained therein.
Do you think, asked Leviathan as he deleted the story from existence, that anyone caught on to the fact you spent an entire cycle allegorising the many faults of a single famed nation?
Passago the Goat, whom we first met upon that Lonely Road in the company of the dwarf woman Boring Nora, did not think so.
