Says a person who has obviously never had a moment's contact with a purring cat. We create a "very un-feline environment it must survive in"? You mean one in which food and water and shelter are provided to them by us? One in which there are no competing species, no predators? An environment in which there are doctors who train specifically to take care of them? Hideous.

It might interest you to know that research indicates that cats have been keeping company with humans for at least 9,500 years, and dogs much longer. Cats may well be the only animal that domesticated itself. The advent of agriculture created a target-rich environment for small felines like the African wildcat, so they settled in and helped us take care of the rodent problem. The relationship simply grew from there.

I like cats, and generally they like me. It is quite incorrect to say I do not know the satisfaction of a purring cat.

I have a rodent problem. A cat would sort it out within a few weeks ... but then I'd have a hungry cat and no more rodents for it to eat. What then? Should I feed it with what I would not kill to feed myself?

It's a sad kind of relationship: a life of ease for the cat, and easy affection for the human. It is SO EASY for humans to get such affection from animals. You don't need a vet, or daily grooming. You don't need to spend quality time with the animal. You just need to raise the animal in an environment where food and protection comes from humans, and it is your "friend".

That's frankly pathetic, and I'm prejudiced against any human who depends on such friendship. It seems to me that they're needy beyond their ability to care for or provide for the emotional needs of human friends.

Pet owners are emotionally needy. Taking a pet is proof positive of need, and also low standards in fulfilling that need. But I would not dismiss a human just for that ... they may have a lot to give. Their history may have given them no other outlet but to make "friends" with an animal on the unequal terms that such friendship must always be.

But let me make it plain: being friends with an animal is a sign of social failure. It's what people do when they want for friendship and cannot find it (or deserve it) among other people. To be friends with an animal is forgiveable, but it is hardly admirable. It's a human weakness. It's what people do for want of something better.

I would not condemn a person for having pets. I am however prejudiced against people for having pets.

We have so much to give, both materially and emotionally. We can win the love of other people (even those with as much to give). Be kind to animals by all means, that shows generosity of spirit ... and kindness is never bad. Help out the stray animal yes, but make it your "friend" and dependant no. The poor animal does not know what it is getting into. Particularly since most pets were "broken" in their childhood: they were not adult wild animals domesticated in some human/animal contract of mutual benefit. They never had any real choice, they were raised tame.

YOU know that you are making it a slave. Never mind that it struts about like the lord of the manor, you know. You know what it is you do, when you protect an animal from predators, provide it with food, and extend its life with medical treatment. You know what you're doing and you should be ashamed to do it for "friendship". It's not friendship, it's prostitution. It's the kind of friendship you can buy with money.
