I've generally found that dogs are slightly smarter, but the cat I have at the moment seems to be an unusually canny feline. He used to be a stray so we let him outside a lot, and he shows his appreciation for not having been de-clawed by only sharpening his claws on bare wood (e.g. "stuff we don't give a shit about the appearance of"), which is pretty cool. He's demonstrated a sound spatial understanding of our house; he knows which windows lead into which rooms, and where to go if he wants in but doesn't get an answer at the front window or door. We have a tree next to the house up which he climbs to get back in (and down to go out) late at night, since he knows I'm usually still near my bedroom window until 2 or 3 am. I wouldn't be impressed with this kind of behavior from a dog, but most cats I've known have had fairly horrible spatial skills.

Oh, and he's goddamn enormous. [float=right][/float] That's a lighter under his belly for scale; his head is probably larger than your fist. He's not fat, but he's fairly heavy. I sometimes call him Überkatze.
