WW2 Q&A thread

Postby The Wacha » Sat Jul 21, 2012 9:50 am

I made this thread for anyone who had a question about WW2. I generally think of my self a expert in WW2 history. I am willing to answer anyone question within my ability. If I am wrong feel free to correct me.

Such an open thread isn't exactly kosher. You should present us with a matter of debate, a question, or an opinion of your own.

Given that the event is largely considered to be nervy American gunners firing at an American barrage balloon, then looking at it logically the Japanese won, as they caused a major panic, indirectly caused the Americans to fire a large quantity of anti-aircraft rounds and indirectly caused an American weather balloon to be shot down, while expending no fuel and no ammunition and suffering no casualties or losses of territory or equipment in the process.
Don't be deceived when our Revolution has finally been stamped out and they tell you things are better now even if there's no poverty to see, because the poverty's been hidden...even if you ever got more wages and could afford to buy more of these new and useless goods which these new industries foist on you, and even if it seems to you that "you never had so much" - that is only the slogan of those who have much more than you.

Okay, here's a question to test your knowledge. Which country in World War II relied on horses for transportation the most?

Germany. The bulk of the German army was horse drawn. Only a handful of mobile divisions where fully motorized.

Stalin and Hitlers relationship before the war was a tricky subject. I would say Stalin generally trusted Hitter and during operation Barbarossa was shocked Hitler betrayed him before he could. Hitlers plan all along was to take Russia for what he called lebensraum or living space. The reason the red army started off winning in the east was because Stalin recently purged the red army of it's officers. They were also generally shocked

The film remains highly controversial, as Wajda includes a mythical scene in which Polish horsemen suicidally charge a unit of German tanks.

Polish cavalry did charge the Germans, but there is no evidence that they charged tanks. The Poles in fact made several successful charges against German infantry, and, in one instance, charged German cavalry! In that instances, on September 23, 1939, the unit of Polish Uhlans charged with their lances against German cavalry wielding sabers. The Poles were victorious in this engagement, and kept advancing...right into German machine gun fire.
