Southham - Vonghurst Cycling Classic RP/Results

Postby Virabia » Mon Jul 26, 2010 4:40 pm

Last I checked, there are no big cycling competitions on Nationstates, however, Liventia had made a scoranator. So as a pretty big fan of cycling, I have decided to host a classic, which will be a warm-up for a 8-9-10 day Tour that I aim to start planning in a few weeks. Thus I give you, the Southham-Vonghurst Classic, which is known in Virabia as (Pretty Beachside Bike Ride).

As it's name suggests it's sticks close to the shore but, don't let this deceive you. It's still a tough course.

Image
(Profile... it's a tad inaccurate intermes of the exact altitude. So use the numbers I gave, not what it looks exactly like in the profile)

Course Description:

The first 7 km of the course are spent winding through the streets of Southham. Around the 8 km mark the peloton will leave Southham behind and begin a 50ish kilometre ride along the beautiful Misqual coast This will take them through numerous costal villages and towns. For the most part, the villages speak exclusively Spanish and have little in the way of english influence. For the most part, riders wont have much to worry about here however, there is a chance that there will be high winds on the day of the race, so the peloton could potentially split. So, any favourites should place themsevles near the front. Around the 75km mark the course then towards inland and heads toward Ellis and Gygax. Quickly the riders will know that theyve entered a new area as small mountains will start to slowly rise around them. These mountains are a part of the Fark Range which are a small enclave of ancient mountains found in southern Tropaia. They are known for having fertile valleys and thus the riders will pass quite a few farms as they get closer to Gygax.

At 100km the riders enter the small town of Gygax. Shortly afterward they will begin the climb to the top of Mount Adams which is the second highest peak in the Fark Range. The climb features 10 switchbacks on its way to the summit. The climb is 9km averaging at a 10% gradient. However one 400m section kicks up to a blistering 23%.

After they summit Mount Adams they will begin a steep descent into the Roenke Valley, which is known for it's scenic Maple Forests. The road they will be on parallels a river and is tucked away in the woods. In the valley they will pass through Grigs State Park and Parque Nacional Alto Viejo (which contains Alto Viejo, the tallest mountain of the Fark Range @ 1000m above sea level). Both parks are renowned nation wide for their beauty.

Then at 140km the peloton will finally enter North Esperanza, winding their way through city streets before finally paralleling the ocean. At the 149 km mark the peloton will cross the 5 km Puente la Paz, a 5 km bridge that cuts it's way through the bay and takes them right in to the heart of downtown Esperanza. There they will begin a rapid series of three climbs over the Three Males of Vonghurst. These climbs only go 100 or so metres above sea level but, all of Vonghurst is below them so they will be able to see much of the city.

These short but steep climbs are likely to be the final chance for riders to attack because after they come off Jeb's hill, they will race through the brick streets of Budwurst and Arvil for 10 km before finally coming to the finish line which is situated right along Kale Beach, a beach often frequented by the locals, and on New Years Eve, hundreds of people out to see the race and the fireworks.

The riders, are, ofcourse, invited to attend the New Years Extravaganza.

(The Three Males Climbs are all @ 9% gradient average.)

Total Course length: 190km

Technical Details of the Race

It will be scorinated by Liventia's cycling scoranator and the following information will need to be provided.

Team name/National team name and attributes (see below)
Rider names (six or less) and attributes (see below)

Attributes: Flat, Climbs, Sprints
There are two sets: one overall for the team, and one for each individual rider.
TEAM attributes: maximum in any category is 5, minimum is 0.1; sum of all three must not exceed 10
RIDER attributes: maximum in any category is 4, minimum is 0.1; sum of all three should not exceed 8

The team's attributes will be added to each individual rider's attributes for scorination.

Now your probably wondering which kind of rider should I enter: Well, the optimal rider for this course will be one who has strength in climbing and sprinting, as there are a few tough-ish climbs on the course and thus, those not good at climbing will quickly find themselves falling behind. However, there will likely be a few big-ish groups of 10-20 riders, and sprinting abillity will be needed for the final dash to the finish.

Anywho, please enter your riders now:

Oh and one more thing: You will be allowed to enter two teams of 6, (or another from a puppet nation) however, depending on signups some puppet teams may have to be bumped. If there are not enough signups, additional Virabi teams will be entered to make up the numbers. I am aiming for 20-22 teams at the moment.

((Also, I may change time gaps, to have, what I feel would be more accurate groupings. However, standings will not at all be affected by this))

Also Please signify if a rider is female or under-25

Any questions, please ask.

From my experience running the Tyoduura Classic, a one-day race doesn't lend itself to a lot of RPing. But if the intention is to get familiarised with the scorinator, it's a good start. NS usedto have the old Tour de Qazox, which didn't have an organised scorinator. The Tour of Ad'ihan, I might do another one of those in November.

Just out of curiosity, by start planning in a few weeks, do you mean sorting a sign-up thread & route in a few weeks or actually hosting a race in a few weeks? The reason I ask is that I'm currently about midway through planning a stage race myself with sign-ups potentially open in a few days and the avoidance of a clash between our stage races would probably be for the better.

To answer both of your questions:

LE: Yep, it's more to familiarise myself with the scoranator, and much rp isn't expected but, any it is definately welcomed. Also, is there a good way to implement RP bonus.

Sorth: By planning, I mean just taking what I learned from this classic and figuring out the best way to run a stage race. Signups, will likely begin in 3 or so weeks and the race will probably be in September, so I don't expect conflict. Also, I will be looking at how you do your tour, to see how to best do mine.

I am obviously interested, but if I'm going to RP cycling it'll be for the Olympics. If this is taking place after they're over, please save me a spot.

While it's up to you how to award the bonus (reset by day or cumulative), I generally add it straight to the attributes of each rider from that team.

Team name: Asal éide spóirt – Sorthern Racing (AÉS)

Profile: Sponsored by Asal éide spóirt, a sportswear company, the Asal éide spóirt – Sorthern Racing team is one of the leading teams in the professional Sorthern peloton, and as such are also the nations de facto national team in international cycling events such as this. Daithí Meallán, bronze medallist in the road race at the Fourth Summer Olympics will go into the race, in theory at least, as team leader.

Directeur sportif: Mitxel Mariñelarena is the teams lively Directeur sportif. A bit of a wine fan, Has previously taken to the wheel of the team car after a bottle or two, which led to a small number of cyclists ending up in hospital. Recently however he has often been found directing his riders from the passenger seat. Also has a surname no one can remember how to spell so is usually referred to by just his first name.

Team attributes: Flat 2, Climb 4, Sprint, 4

Riders:

Shawn Casey: F 1, C 2, S 5
Mairtín Ó hUallacháin: F 3, C 3, S 2
Illiam Kennaugh: F 4, C 3, S 1 (22 y/o)

Team name: McLafferty's Sorthern Stout (MSS)

Profile: Sponsored by the brewery responsible for one of Sorthern Northland's most popular beers, the McLafferty's team has been able to quickly gain a following by giving spectators at Sorthern cycling events a free pint of their drink. The Vonghurst Classic will, they hope, see this tactic taken to foreign shores for the first time. Treasa Nic Chartaigh, a former runner-up to Mike Caverndash in the Sorthern national road race championship, takes up the team leadership mantle, despite the course rather looking unlike one that suits her.

Directeur sportif: Fran Ventoso has arguably been one of the most influential people in Sorthern cycling. In many ways it was his gold medal in the road race at the Third Summer Olympics - Sorthern Northland's first Olympic gold in any sport - that bought cycling to the awareness and into the hearts of the Sorthern populace. A fine sprinter and a somewhat spontaneous racer, the McLafferty's team in their first few races under Ventoso have been somewhat prone to make audacious attacks.

It looks like I'm past the second deadline, so no problem at all if I'm too late. Just on the off chance you need an extra team or teams, Zwangzug could send...

Mebitron (Flat 4, Climbs 3, Sprints 3):

Ashleigh Corras (2/3/3)
Derek Stames (2/4/2)
Marty Spasher (3/2/3)
Joseph Nibey (3/3/2)
Liang Chan (3/2/3)
Leah Pischi (3/4/1)

Corras and Pischi are female; Spasher is under 25.

...and, for that matter...

Nubind (4/4/2)

Steve Koshnal (4/1/3)
Bertrand Nazar (3/4/1)
Louise Shelm (3/2/3)
Mark Empner (3/3/2)
Hanna Chikawa (2/3/3)
Tony Xiao (3/2/3)

Shelm and Chikawa are female; Chikawa is also under 25.

Again, no problem if I'm too late.

The Arlington Moon-Tribune
New Year's Eve fireworks await in Virabia

The Pretty Beachside Bike Ride is set to begin in Virabia. It will be held, by the Virabian calendar, on New Year's Eve--no doubt an unusual time of year for Zwangzugian cyclists to be racing, particularly given that some of their most highly-touted racers couldn't compete due to being part of the ongoing Summer Olympics.

Still, Ashleigh Corras of Mebitron is hopeful. "I've gotten the chance to look over the course, and this is definitely racing weather. It sounds like there's some chance of wind, but nothing I can't handle." The race will pit Corras' Mebitron, as well as Nubind, up against established teams such as Asal éide spóirt and Aigh nas Muinradh, as well as a team of Liventians 23 and under.

The question of age could be a thorny one; a special classification for riders under 25 means that Marty Spasher and Hanna Chikawa must give more concrete information than they would perhaps like for what seems to be a shot at extra glory. Spasher, however, seems confident. "Cycling competitions are opening up to more international riders. This is great for the sport and I'm looking forward to being part of it, however it develops from here."

And the extra classifications have another use, as well; despite the misleading presence of a "Three Males" mountain section near the end of the tour, this race is open to female competitors. "This is, of course, great news," says Corras. "I'm looking forward to more opportunities, wherever the future takes me."

First, however, is the ride from Southham to Vonghurst. It'll take ability to climb the grueling Mt. Adams, savvy to know when to hang with large groups and when to make a break for it. But perhaps most of all, over the journey, the riders will need--yes--resolution.

The Vonghurst Star
Some story about the Southham Vonghurst

SOUTHHAM - It's time once again for the annual Southham-Vonghurst Cycle Classic. The race has run fifty editions and has not changed it's course once in all that time. It's a race that for years has been the same, with the only differences between editions being the actual racing it self.

However, this year it's all about to change. The race has been moved from the First of May to New Years Eve (more on that later), and for the first time in it's history it is open to foreign competitors. Other changes include the addition of going over Peace Bridge instead of going along the shore, a change that took off around 30 km to the route and movment of the starting line from Avenida Rosa to Avenida La Rue .5 km back.

When asked what he thought the changes would do to the race, head organiser Marc Renolds said, "After the last race, the other organisers and I felt we needed a change. Running the same thing every year gets boring. As to what the changes will do, I think the inclusion of foreign riders will increase the level and variety of competition in the peloton. As for the change of the date, that was to avoid conflict with a new stage race that's being planned. Also what's a better way to end the year than with a cycle race."

On the topic of route changes he also said, "The route changes were simply to change up the course, add some variety, also, due to the timing, it would be kind of hard to go the races original route along the water. So Peace Bridge it is.

Also, remember how the race is going to be on New Years, the organisers have planned for that too. For instance, at the beginning of the race each rider will be given a complimentary glass of wine from a local winery, why, cuz it's new years. Another thing that is likely to make an appearence is those annoying blower things. You know what I'm talking about. Well, some riders on Virabi teams (most notibly those on MasterBate Pro Cycling Team) have said that they will be doing antics with them during the flatter part of the course, fans are also expected to be a bit more rowdy than usual as most Virabis drink non stop on the two days surrounding the New Year, so the fans (especially on Mt. Adams) will be a bit rowdy.

None of that, or anything else surpasses the big innovation of the race. Fireworks.

By that we mean, the first act of the Vonghurst Bay Fireworks will be triggered when riders cross the finish. How? You ask, well under the finish line there is a strip, that senses weight. Then when it senses weight it triggers the fire works to go off. One per rider, which means that when groups finish, there is guarenteed to be a show.

The idea has drawn some contreversey, and some riders said that it will be hard to finish the race if fireworks going off but, none the less the idea has been kept. We'll have to see just how well it works.

After the disater that was the Tour de Ad'ihan for Qazoxian riders, the good results from the South-ham/Vonghurst Classic in Virabia so that perhaps Cycling is not dead in Qazox after all.

Charlotte Churchill suprised almost everyone by finishing in a tie for 19th (placed 21st due to scoring) only 21 seconds behind the winning time of 5hr:35m:05sec put in by Tom Shedlock from CycleMark Test Team. Churchill was the 7th woman to finish the race.

Disapointing most of Team Ganja Vodka was the ride of David Ramses. While the race was a bit more hilly than Ramses is used to, to finish in a tie for 134th place, at +29m:30sec; was inexcusable. Though that didn't stop David from claiming so:
While the hills were not that tough, the fact that my chain popped off 5 times during the race and I had a flat tire twice did not help my ride today. I blame the technicians who set my bike up totally wrong for this race.
