Tur Mytanija (Everything Thread) (IC)

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Tur Mytanija, which has been opened up to foreign riders for the first time in its history. Mytanija's domestic cycling season has been opened up more widely, to allow foreign riders and teams the chance to acclimatise to some of the most competitive races in the multiverse before the biggest race of them all: Tur Mytanija. This means that Mytanija's spring classics season will see foreign competition for the first time too, as well as some of the pre-Tur preparatory stage races.

There are 31 days of racing in all and something for every type of rider! The season will feature the following races:

RP BONUS & TEAM LEADER BONUS
RP Bonus will be generous and cumulative and will be particularly based upon each RP's quality, the quality of the RP's interaction with other RPers (where relevant) and demonstration of cycling-specific depth (where relevant - I do not prescribe how you should RP and welcome RPs about anything and everything, this is merely a note that when RPing about the sport and an attempt is made to reflect it within the RP special attention will be paid to any nice cycling-specific flourishes). An RP by the nation which owns a team will count for all of its riders, no matter what their nationality.

Ahead of each race, each team's directeur sportif (i.e. you!) may choose a rider as your team leader for the upcoming race. This is likely something that you will choose on the basis of the race's characteristics, for example for the flat Trofej Gazvoda you may pick your best sprinter; or for Ciezin-Prizren you may pick your cobbled classics specialist with the best bikehandling; and for Tur Mytanija your GC leader.

This must be done in an RP!!! with the idea being that it gives other nations an idea of who the team leader is for each team and to provide some fuel for their own RPs both pre and post-race. An example could be an interview with your IC sporting director talking about your team's tactics for the upcoming race, or a conversation between the riders discussing how their team leader is feeling. Once you have done this within the RP, you can then include an OOC note to confirm, e.g. OOC: John Smith is assigned team leader bonus for Trofej Gazvoda just to make it obvious for me ahead of scorination.

This bonus will give the team leader a small boost for the race in question and will be slightly larger than the RP bonus which will be available for each single one of the 25 scorination windows. It will reset after each race and if no rider is selected then you will miss out.

It is worth remembering that professional cycling teams often have different priorities, with some built for world-class sprinters and others built to win the general classification, so it is worth thinking about what your team is aiming to do over the course of the season and which races, stages and stage races they are aiming to win.

The Magnier-BadenMarkt cycling team announced today will be heading to Mytanija to participate in that nation's domestic cycling season.

"Of course we all love the Tour de Reçueçn, but that's not the only cycling competition in the multiverse," said Carl Stiglitz, the team's star rider. "There's a lot of other laurels out there for us to set our sights on, and the Tur Mytanija has to be one of the most prestigious. There's going to be riders from over a dozen different countries, and it's going to be our chance to represent Reçuecian cycling in front of all of them."

Magnier-BadenMarkt is the only Reçuecian team whose application to participate in the Tur Mytanija was accepted. For this reason, Reçuecian sports media have tacitly accepted the team as "Reçueçn's team," with their coverage suddenly spiking and far outpacing any coverage of other Reçuecian teams participating only in the domestic calendar. The brand ambassadors for Magnier, the Reçuecian luxury auto company which is the team's chief sponsor, have widely celebrated this development, even referring to the Magnier-BadenMarkt cycling team as "les licornes", the nickname of Reçueçn's national soccer team. Cycling fans across the nation—barring the most loyal supporters of Magnier-BadenMarkt's rivals—seem to have largely accepted this, and the team's fanbase has ballooned as it prepares for its first multiversal competitions.

Our cyclists grow up with world-class climbs outside their front doors, training on cols riders come from around the world to train on. I'm confident that a Reçuecian can win the K.O.M. classification in Mytanija, or anywhere in the multiverse."

Magnier-BadenMarkt has established a training camp in the hills of western Thessia as a home base for its riders during the upcoming season. Local amateurs have already spotted the team out on the roads training as they prepare for the upcoming Trofej Gazvoda.

TEAM ASTERAS ENERGY - VÉLO CLUB DE GRANDEVILLE

Lisander has two outstanding professional cycling teams: Team Ingenium ING-Carbonnere, internationally known for its participation in a recent Tour of Ko-oren, and Team Harminbank-Azhaar Pro Racing, internationally known for leasing its name to a certain motorsports team. There are other teams, small, amateur, semi-pro, that compete in small events, like the Tour of Lisander, the Volta ao Valerian, the Northern Crossing and the Spirit of Cantabria, but these two especially are the biggest in the nation, a neck ahead of the others. Cycling Lisander, the national federation and event organizer, couldn't choose between one of them to send to the event, for a handful of reasons, including but not limited to:

1. Because they recently signed a record contract with Asteras, an energy company working in updating the eolic farms of northern Lisander and wanted their partner displayed;
2. Because it wanted the best lisanderian athletes competing before the Olympics;
3. Choosing one team would mean refusing the other, and facing lots of criticism;
4. Avoid investing funds in a single project, so as not to create an all-powerful team that will undermine local competition in the long run. So instead of one of those, Vélo Club de Grandeville, a small racing club based in Grandeville, northern Lisander, was chosen.

Cycling Lisander CEO, Maria Vernet, offered the following explanation: “This was an unusual situation, but I'm happy we reached good terms with VCG. We didn’t want it to look as though we were favouring either team. I wish we had been offered two spots. Both ING and Harmin are excellent, but if we had accepted one or the other, we would have faced a barrage of criticism from the team that was turned down. So the only possible choice was ‘neither’. So, one of the members of the Vélo-Club de Grandeville offered their facilities for the team’s training. They said: ‘We’ve only an amateur team, but we have a contract with the local council, that granted us a good area for use as training centre, near the Circuit. We can rent it or lend it to you’. The idea felt perfect. We got a facility in Grandeville, perfect for mountain training, and a clubhouse to use as our Headquarters. We discussed with both ING and Harmin, offered them a financial compensation for ‘poaching’ or ‘borrowing’ their athletes, as you prefer, and brought them to form a short-lived AsterasEnergy-Vélo Club de Grandeville, that will also be the base of Lisander Road Racing Team for the Olympic Games in Hamilton and Prescott.”

When it comes to the bicycles, as it was expected, Cycling Lisander continues its partnership with local brand Carbonnere. Its road racing model, the Alpina, almost omnipresent in Lisander competitions, on its multiple generations, will be used by Asteras-VCG riders. This one (Alpina G4), however, is being advertised as the greatest racing bike ever built by them, because of a partnership with Camden to the development of the groupset. ‘Made with F1 technology’, the advertising says, referring to Camden stints at AstyF1 and Forzala 1 Championship. Whether there is a real improvement in quality, or whether this is just marketing hype, we'll see.

When the list of signups was revealed, many were surprised. Most of the community expected a swansong of Leyton Castres, fifth-placed in the last Tour of Ko-oren, the best result of a Lisanderian rider outside Olympics, but the 38-year-old from ING opted to join the team only as part of the staff, supporting its team partners, André Venter (Bronze at Road Racing, 15th Olympics, 111th at Tour of Ko-oren), Yannis "Yan" Monteiro (26th at Tour of Ko-oren), Lídio Navarre and Mateus Martinelli (53rd at Tour of Ko-oren). Fernando O'Ward, Filipe Almeida, Lauro Lisien and Athos Horsfall come from Team Harmin-Azhaar. Tássio de Mitri, the ninth member of the team, is the only Cycling Lisander contracted athlete, and rides professionally to Mariner-AstleyBank, a team from Beaumont, Northern Lisander, that actually exists to support his career. The 26-year rider, Sprint Olympic Champion in Hamilton-Schimpol, abandoned the track completely and became a top-level climber in mere three years, winning (against all those other guys) the white shirt with the green and yellow chest stripe, reserved to the national champion of Lisander, last season.

Lauri Suviste nervously pulled from his cigarette. He was the kind of smoker who put on his next smoke with the previous one and those unfortunate enough to share the DS car with him, suffered the consequences. According to Suviste, the rumors that his loyal mechanic Eppo Raming struggled with lungs due to that habit were just baloney. In short, he's a hard man to phase but even this old hand in the sport had not been looking forward to this. After some, well, less rosy passages in his career such as rumors about selling races to the highest bidder, Suviste had fallen on hard times. But a few months, sitting at home, watching television alone had taught him one thing: either he got back in the business or it would be the end of him. So when Mikkel Herrup passed him a call, he nearly ran to the head offices of LiitBank.

It wasn't until the short-skirted, well-manicured, flawless-accented secretary let him into the office of mister Herrup, that he realized how shabby his appearance would come across: the old chequered shirt, the patched jeans pants and the run-down sporting shoes. It was too late to change, so Suviste would have to convince with the case he had prepared. The premise in itself was outlandish. Mikkel Herrup was born into the wealth of a banking family, rich enough to spoil him and wise enough to keep him away from any real power that could threaten the family fortune. But the pocket money they offered still was enough to fund his hobbies, the main one being the management of the LiitBank cycling team. They were one of the eighteen teams licensed to compete in the Downwind Series, the only professional tour in the region formed by 24 races across 53 days. Thanks to strong guy Reio Nurme, the side routineously took home wins but it was a public secret that Herrup had bigger ambitions for the team. And now he had found a way forward in it, by applying to the Mytanijan domestic circuit.

Herrup had just two problems: his set of riders, especially the climbers, are likely to disappoint against international competition and his directeur sportif finally collapsed under the micromanagement of his boss and threw the towel. Maybe Lauri didn't realize it, but Herrup needed him as much as the other way around. You wouldn't tell from the way Herrup walked in, barked a command into the void behind him ("Coffee, pronto!") and seated himself in the large leather armchair that dominated the room. Lauri shuffled a bit on his chair.

"So. Suviste. Tell me."

At first, the explanation of Lauri was a bit hesitant but once in his element, he got on fire. He had great plans about the way they could compose the team and make it financially sound. For all the attitude Herrup carried, he was not an idiot and Lauri knew that he knew his cycling. Not as much as Lauri, after forty years in the business, but still. As he explained, Lauri calmly put flashcards on the desk with the main summary of the rider. As oldschool as he was, it were bits from a typewriter but they did the trick as good as any flashy presentation.

"For me, there are three guys on the current LiitBank roster that I want to go along for the ride. Reio Nurme as our leader for the flattish races, he's got the strength to get over a hill and the speed on the line. He's big, he's bulky, he's brass, he's the perfect face for this team. Additionally, I can see a spot for youngsters Taavi Kallerund and Jaakko Lepp in our line-up."
"Jaakko I see, having a tank like him will be of great use. But Scar as well and not, for example, Valter Nimar?"
"I'll be honest, I don't think Nimar has the attitude nor the potential to really shine in this Tur... The level is too high. For Taavi... I know that major crash marked him, both physically and mentally. But I see untapped potential in him as a multitool support rider."

Quietly, Herrup ogled the flashcards. Without words, you could see him make the calculations in his head: only keeping three riders, that meant six new guys... The funds were not endless.

"To complement them outside the mountains, there are two reasonably priced hires we should make for the season. We should invest in Peet Morsman and Qasim Fajr."
"Old Peet? A washed-up sprinter with his age?"
"He's only 33... I've worked with him. Yes, his speed no longer is what it has been, but if someone can guide Nurme through a hectic sprint, it is him. And I think he can be a good influence on our more... flamboyant personalities. If Peet speaks, you listen."

Herrup scratched his chin, but Lauri took the lack of further questions as a nod of approval.

"And for the hilly races, we could go with Fajr. Only three riders in the history of the Downwind Series won a one-day race before their twentieth birthday and he's one of them. Yes, he stalled a bit, but he's still only 23. I believe we can revamp him."
"Rumor on the street is that he suffers from performance anxiety."

The way Herrup pronounced it, you would be sure it was a dirty word.

"All the kid needs is a breath of fresh air."

At home, Lauri had practised to say that sentence as careless as possible. The reason he had suggested Fajr was because most of his hiring budget would go into his next proposal.

"But for our leader, we should go out and hire Zeru Tewodros."

Now he had the full focus of Herrup, who stopped watching the flashcards and looked him dead in the eye.

"Tewodros. The winner of the last Great Downwind Tour. Emara's first star rider and one of the, if not yet simply the, top rider of the region? How do you th-"
"I've heard through the grapevine that his team can use a boost."
"Chick'n'Mix?"
"Apparently their cosponsors are bailing for the next season, after winning the biggest race, they feel there name is out there enough and others don't want to cover the cost."
"Yeah, but they won't fall through at once."
"No, not with our offer. At the one hand, we give some cash to hire Tewodros for the Tur, whilst staying on their payroll. As a thank you, we slap their name onto the team name and ensure that their main sponsor gets more publicity out of this than they had ever imagined."

Twice, Mikkel started a counterargument but he never got to a finished sentence. Every way he looked at it, it was a beneficial deal for all involved and getting the 25-year old skinny star climber on board would boost not only the team but also the buzz. Deep down, Lauri started to bubble from delight. I still got it.

"Ok, Suviste," Mikkel eventually conceded, "we won't let him into the mountains on his own, shall we?"
"I would go with Grigore Muresanu and Txuki Garzarain on his side."

There would never be any discussion about Muresanu, known as a reliable helper who could set a high pace uphill.

"Garzarain..." Herrup sighed.
"He's out of contract-"
"For a reason."
"-And not done with the sport yet."

At 32, Txuki Garzarain could look at a trophy cabinet that held almost every mountainous and hilly top race held in the Downwind Series. But a nasty leg injury three seasons ago had been the start of his demise, combined with what his current team called disciplinary issues off the record.

"His stage win in the Great Tour just three months ago shows he's back on the level."
"And the next day, he lost seven minutes in a time trial."
"Well... It never was his strength. But that's not what we would pay him to do."
"We? I, you mean."

While Herrup wanted to set the chain of command straight with his reply, it also was the end of his official doubts around Garzarain. At his best, El Condor Branco is a worldclass climber and that's a fact. After a second of silence, Herrup calmly counted the flashcards.

"So, that's eight, Lauri. I know your reputation too well to believe you're bad at counting."
"Last but not least, I'ld suggest Nariman Amanetev."

The exasperated sigh hung in the room for a few seconds.

"He's got a great acceleration uphill and on his day, he can fight the whole peloton on his own."
"Yeah... The only problem is that no one knows when that day comes."
"The fans admire him," Lauri tried to sell his wildcard.
"And his teammates hate him. I've seen him fall back quite often when there's work to do but no result in it for him."
"He's... Got his quirks, I admit. But if he can pull the stunt and grab a win just once this season, across 31 stages, it's worth the investment."

Once more, Herrup's eyes went over the nine flashcards, one after the other. All riders had strengths but from the look of it, it was a motley crew.

"You really like taking a chance on guys who dropped the ball elsewhere, huh."
"Don't we all, sir?"

The candid reflection of their own situation made Mikkel chuckle as he checked the list one last time.

"Jezus Christ... Garzarain, Amanetev, Fajr, ..." he shook his head as if to shake off his better judgement, "Well, Suviste, it's you who's going to have to work with them. I'll let my secretary take care of the paperwork. In most cases, their current teams will be happy if someone takes them of their hands for a fair price and if the situation at Chick'n'Mix is as dire as you suggest, that should be easy as well."
"Excellent, I'll take care of the fitness plans. For guys like Tewodros, the main targets are later but if we want Reio Nurme to lead the squad in the Trofej Gazvoda, there is no time to lose."
