ZX-Flow Energy Rally Togonistan
Metavira, Tongonistan

Mikuren arrived at Togonistan for the third round of the season confident in their performance especially in the gravel where they should do well if not excel. Excitement and anxiety are felt in the team as they prepare everything for the rally, some of the Schkeska mechanics that remained were talking amongst themselves about their previous experience here in Tongonistan, while the rest from Mikuren and Viska continue on. Mick, the technical director, couldn't help but listen in on their woes, leaning on the side of Laila's car after a brief check.

"I didn't expect it to be tat bad." One of the Schkeska mechanics said as he recalled what happened previously. "The car kept shaking itself apart for some reason which caused Luna to crash out."

"It was out of our control at that time. Nothing we could do."

"Reliable, am I right?"

Mick remained silent as the group continued on. He waves at the other mechanics as they leave to take their breaks, and continued on listening.

"I hope it won't happen again."

He took this is a cue to enter, as loud as he can, he sternly says to the mechanics. "It won't happen again." As he turns toward them. "While we're still proving ourselves as we clean up your shit, we managed more points in the first two rounds and that says something. We haven't had any failures apart from driver error from pushing." And he was right as the Schkeska mechanics look at each other before conceding to Mick. There was no doubt about Mikuren's slow rise and they were there to continue it, maybe even speed it up a bit. "I can say that we managed to tame Schkeska's beast."

And after some "nice" words about their behaviour, Mick leaves the group to clean up after themselves as he goes on to help prepare their "new" recce cars that they had just bought with their increased budget after struggling with an outdated econobox that they inherited from Schkeska.

Sport Mikuren Tent

In preparation for the rally, Kälö gathered both Gallegos and Raatikainen, and their co-drivers around a table to discuss about the stages and the Tongonistan Rally in general. Offering some coffee and snacks while taking a sip of his, he starts off by sharing the notes he took during the previous season about certain quirks and features of the stages during his peaceful drive throughout the rally.

"I guess that's all the interesting stuff I had. Oh, I heard about the cars literally falling apart last time we were here. I certainly had some issues but not as bad as my teammate's. I can say that the ads about the reliability were a bit misleading. Anyways, I'm confident that we will finish this in one piece... or with a small bit or two fallen off."

...

"Well, with that said, let's just go for it."

Later, after the four left to do whatever they do, Kälö reclines on his chair as Zuiha brings some more snacks to him. "Here." She says as she hands over a bag of kuurami (lit. "small ear"; small cinnamon rolls, usually paired and dipped in coffee) to Kälö before sitting beside him. "You think we can keep up?" She asks as she runs through her notes about the rally.

"Yep, I'm sure we can. Mikuren's different from before and their approach is nicely refreshing." Kälö says before pausing to devour the snacks. "They support us well and I'm confident that we can pay them back with results. We ain't giving up on anything."

"I see." Zuiha smiles after hearing Kälö's thoughts then she sets down her notes and joins him on eating some kuurami.

"As I said before... let's just go for it."

Shakedown and Leg 1

Even knowing that the home hero Keretene will have it in the bag, there's nothing stopping Mikuren from trying to get close. And get close they did. As Keretene sets the fastest time of 2:46.933, the Mikuren drivers did everything they could to at least try to deny her pole. Raatikainen and Blomqvist were out first, pushing to the best of her abilities, the Kimi-Suomi pair were exactly a tenth off of pole. Up next was Gallegos and Reotutar who came second to Keretene, leaving Aurinen and Kailenta to try their hand on coming first in the shakedown. While they did their best, it was only enough for third with Poldov splitting the Mikurens of Aurinen and Raatikainen in P4.

The performance of all three were promising and it set the mood for the remainder of the rally starting in the first leg. While both Raatikainen and Aurinen had some major mistakes, leading them to gain a lot of time only to end up finishing P8 and P9, Gallegos was the star of the first day as the Fleftic pair finished first and nearly 15 seconds ahead of Keretene.

Celebrations ignited within the team as they couldn't believe what they managed to do.

Although it was short-lived.

Leg 2

As things were going right, it suddenly made a sharp left turn as Gallegos crashed out of the 14th stage of the rally. Back at the tent, Juri, who was watching the following events unfold, slammed his table and yelled "FUCK!" and with this retirement, Keretene and Ælund leads, and Mikuren was left with two drivers for the second leg as the team scrambled to repair the car upon its arrival back at the service park. The retirement was offset by the performances of both Aurinen and Raatikainen with the former finishing third. Both drivers were up to P3 and P6 respectively in the overall standings.

Leg 3

Then came the third leg of the rally. Gallegos managed to bounce back but it wasn't enough for a significant gain in the overall standings, leaving him out of the points. Raatikainen was the next of the Mikurens to go and it was their best performance of the season. A flawless but blitzing drive through the challenging stages to secure a lead over Poldov and Keretene. It wasn't enough to compete for the overall lead against Ælund but eventually, it landed them in third giving themselves and Mikuren their first podium. The celebrations continued as it was their best result to date.

Meanwhile, as they try to keep up with their teammates, Kälö inadvertently pushed too hard in the final stage and he went wide, sliding the tail on a fast right-hander, clipping a large tree stump with the rear, spinning his Kana around and leaving it on the side of the road for a moment. He managed to get it going again but the rear-left of the car was severely mangled as he tried to finish the stage with an injured car. Thankfully, this occurred near the end of the stage so there weren't any significant time gained but they were the last to actually finish. Still, it landed them P8.

Later on, they join in on the P3 celebrations with the rest of the team. It lasted throughout the remainder of the day as Mikuren's gradual but upward trajectory became noticeable as they take P4 in the teams' championship standings and earning more points than Schkeska in the first three rallies. With such positive gains, many are now looking forward to their performance in the next rally in Kimi-Suomi.

A return to snow.

After the Tongonistan Rally

Juri, Ari and Mick are just casually talking about the Tongonistan Rally with a few inserts of the team's future plans in the season. Their conversation was briefly halted as Juri's phone started to ring. The three joked around a bit, with both Ari and Mick teasing Juri about the phonecall before Juri actually answers. The room falls silent as Juri takes the call. It was obvious that the caller had a lot to say as Juri couldn't respond much. Upon realising that there's something going on, Ari waits for the call to end to ask Juri. "Who was that and what's going on? Tell us if it's something serious."

"It's Schkeska again."

Puntila: Skua "Car to Beat" Following Second Formation Finish for Iskabil
Iskabil-Ælund's all-new Skua XB-4 SR scored Iskabil-Ælund World Rally Team's second ever one-two finish in Togonistan — proving in the eyes of team principal Konrad Puntila that their machine is the car to beat as the season approaches it's halfway point.

Image
#23 N. Keretene/H. Karaka fly through SS23 Tira Pass
METAVIRA — The curtain fell on the 16th annual Rally Togonistan with raving cheers and celebrations of black, red and gold: Naomi Keretene and Heriko Karaka of Togonistan had flipped the script of their tumultuous home round a year prior, as the pair delivered a flawless, near-dominant drive to secure a second ever one-two finish for the Abovian Iskabil-Ælund outfit, ahead of Kassegrochian teammates Ivan Poldov and Vitaly Ponomarjov. For outspoken team principal Konrad Puntila, the result all but cemented the Skua-Keretene pairing as the benchmark of the second WSRC season.

"It's an incredible result," Puntila said through a gleaming smile from the Metavira Expo Hall. "A one-two finish is always a big boost to the confidence in the team, but this one has been extra-special—it feels like the very first!"

Iskabil-Ælund's previous one-two finish had come in the inaugural season's penultimate round, the all-tarmac Tour de Nékoni. Then, it was Keretene who led the podium as well, prevailing over a dejected Axel Novikov and Henrik Baardsen by 20 seconds—as the Abovians' all-but secured victory feel apart with a puncture in the final five kilometers of the rally.

Keretene's progress since her inaugural season, where her title bid fell short of an incredibly consistent Novikov, served Puntila a convincing argument to declare the Skua, especially at her hands, the package to beat.

"You look at the results so far and the reality is clear," he said. "Two straight podiums—okay, she was frustrated with not winning in Aboveland, but it was a good result—and a win to already secure the title lead for the next two rounds, when last season she seemed lost after her shock victory in Aboveland! It shows us not only that her skills and her drive to win have grown and developed, but also that we've made a car that is perfect for our drivers to jump in and immediately find the feeling. Skua-Keretene, at the moment, is unstoppable."

Keretene's odds of an unprecedented home victory quickly fell in her favor after SS14 Kairaki 2, after overnight leader Trevon Gallegos of Sport Mikuren crashed out of a thrilling battle for the lead. His demise, coupled with struggles across the table for the rest of the field, propelled the Togonistani driver to a comfortable lead by the end of the day, increasing her gap over Poldov and mingling on the podium with an enlightened Kälö Aurinen a further 9 seconds back in third. Her ability to keep her Skua out of trouble—even if it meant dropping time to eventual third-placed Laila Raatikainen on the final day—secured her fate, with Poldov efficiently playing his role of wingman to keep the resilient Suomen drivers over 20 seconds behind by the time they arrived back in Metavira.

The current stage of the championship, however, has proven bittersweet in general for the Abovian crowd. Koivuslotter driver Sakke Pajari had a trying debut season behind the wheel of a haphazard HMG Rally machine, but was given a lifeline by Koaiwan-based TGK-VK, alongside Quebecois hotshot Malo Boludo, to drive the team's Abovian-prepared Albatross machines. However, the season so far for the koi-clad cars has been troubled at best: second-last in the teams' championship is reflected in the drivers' standings, with Pajari sharing last place alongside Darkmanian Danyel Melander. "I'm struggling," Pajari admitted dryly. "The car is much better than what I was driving last year, but we have been very unlucky very often and very early in the rallies. Once you get a time penalty from retirement, your rally is over." The Abovian has only finished one rally, the Wakanai Winter Classic, without retirement penalties: then, he finished last of the non-retirees in the event, whereas accidents in Aboveland and Togonistan all but ruled him out of contention for points. "Sometimes, the car goes light or the nose comes up, and you're just a passenger," he revealed after his violent SS3 exit in Awariki. "I was coming up to the bridge just after a fast right hander and the car didn't turn, but then I tapped the brakes and I lost the rear into the railing."

Reigning champion Axel Novikov's situation is perhaps just as dire as his younger compatriots'. The Avsidesliggendevuoretian has only scored 18 points so far, with a podium in Aboveland and a distant seventh place in Togonistan his only claims to fame. He's characteristically dismissive of his struggles, but his gap to his younger and more successful — in terms of rally wins — teammate is over 40 points with five rounds to go. "I'm not frustrated," he said after arriving in Metavira for the last time. "But I still need to find the feeling in the Skua. It's surely a better car than the Kokko—I just need to make it work for me. If my teammates can be fast, I can too." Rumors have circulated of a strained relationship between him and Nykipish co-driver Henrik Baardsen, but Novikov was quick to dispel them.

The WSRC returns to snow next weekend for round four, and the second of three new events on the calendar: the Lumen Ralli of Kimi-Suomi is overall the longest event on the calendar, spanning a length of 508km (the same as Wakanai and the following round in Lisander) spread over 23 special stages, and will be the first of two all-surface events, with drivers having to brave gravel, asphalt, and snow, all in three days. "I will definitely try to win," Novikov confirmed. "I always do; but now it's more important."

The Fightback (Ralli - Kuusi)

WSRC 2
Round 3
ZX-Flow Energy Rally Togonistan
Metavira Expo Park, Metavira, Togonistan

Sometimes, this sport can surprise you in every way possible. You think that you understand everything this game can throw at you, every nook and cranny that you can ever possibly imagine, and then one day comes when the form book flies out of the window in a way nobody expected. That is exactly what happened to Car #77, driven by Laila Raatikainen and assisted by Pehr Henrik Blomqvist, in the ZX-Flow Energy Rally Togonistan...a Rally that may have come at the right place and the right time for the Kimi-Suomen pair.

It would become apparent from the initial Shakedown that the Schkeska had some pace on this gravel in particular. All 3 of those pink cars would end up within a tenth of a second of the locals and hot favourites in car #23 (Keretene/Karaka) and that certainly did feel good for a team that people still felt was hampered by...you know what. Car #84 (Gallegos/Reotutar) will start 2nd, #87 (Aurinen/Kailenta) in 3rd and #77 would start 5th just behind #57 (Poldov/Ponomarjov).

Then came Leg 1, Stages 1-9, and the pace of the cars would certainly be unleashed. With so many stages, any incident or trouble was certainly going to cost you big time - as seen with #68 (Pajari/Kalliomäki), who DNFed on Stage 3 and would start the 2nd leg with a crippling 21-minute penalty. Car #84 would set the initial pace over hosts #23 and #16 (Imparato/Nogueira) with both #87 and #77 in 8th and 9th respectively.

Leg 2 was composed of Stages 10-19, but Stage 11 would be cancelled due to safety grounds apparently felt by the organisers here in the jungle. That would certainly become apparent once the drama of the day got underwayas 4 cars ended up with time penalties to count. Both #27 (Harcourt-Mauroy/d'Ombret) and #44 (Suyauey/Yliande) didn't make it past the first stage, so 30 mins would be the painful cost for both. #84, the overnight leaders, met their match on Stage 14 and had to add 19 minutes to theirs while #91 (Boludo/de FitzLawrence) fell at SS17 and had to add 9 mins to their time. Car #77 managed some good pace overall, only 41 seconds down in 7th, which would translate into a 1:23.287 deficit in 6th for tomorrow. The Top 3 would reflect the overall Top 3 with #23 ahead of #57 and #87.

Leg 3, Stages 20-26, would end up being the most interesting day in the history of car #77 as Laila and Pehr Henrik managed to find something that neither of them expected: pace. Suddenly, these final stages just...clicked with Laila and with PHB and they seemed to glide over the gravel with no apparent explanation at all. Their pace was so quick, they ended up being the quickest of the day - 9 seconds over #57 in 2nd and 17 seconds over the eventual winners. That, coupled with some difficulties for #87 and DNFs for both Camden WRT cars, meant that when Keretene/Karaka crossed the final line, the standings would be as followed: #87 in 8th, #23 in 1st, #57 in 2nd and #77 in 3rd. In their 3rd Rally in this series, Laila and Pehr Henrik had grabbed Sport Mikuren's first ever podium right out of the hat...and neither of them could believe it.

To say the celebrations would be fruitful would be an understatement, both on and off the podium. Getting that 3rd Place Trophy and spraying that champagne lifted a weight off both of their shoulders as it finally felt like they were finally clicking in the WSRC. They had jumped right up to 8th in the standings and helped SM up to 4th and right in the mix in the Teams. The team felt...joyous for the first time and it finally felt like things were improving...and at the perfect time. The halfway rally would be next...and one that both Laila and PHB had been both existed for and dreaded. The series was heading to Lumikukkulat for the very first time...for the first ever WSRC Lumen Ralli. The Rally of the Snow was going international and both of them knew that getting back to Kimi-Suomi's Rally Capital was certainly going to feel daunting. The Shakedown on Aloitussilmukka (The Starting Loop), straight onto Sprintti (The Sprint), then entering Järvenranta Helvetti (The Lakeside Hell) on Lake Peter (Pietarijärvi) before the run for the line on Pitkä Juoksu Takaisin (The Long Run Back). It was something they had done a few times before...but not here, not in the WSRC, not in the biggest league of them all.

Things were going to be very interesting when they get back to the Rogue Kingdom...but one thing was for certain.
Oli aika lähteä kotiin.
Det var dags att åka hem.
It was time to go home.

WELCOME TO THE RALLY OF THE SNOW
TERVETULOA LUMEN RALLYIN
VÄLKOMMEN TILL SNÖ RALLY

The Government of the Rogue Kingdom of Kimi-Suomi would like to welcome the nations of the World Stage Rally Championship (WSRC) to the first ever International Edition of the Lumen Ralli in Lumikukkulat. We are so excited to host an international racing event for the very first time and we hope that both locals and visitors alike can enjoy the upcoming weekend and what both Kimi-Suomi and Lumikukkulat have to offer. Just a word of warning to you all: Se tulee olemaan kylmä. It will be cold.

LOCAL INFO/PAIKALLISTA TIETOA/LOKAL INFO
Lumikukkulat is the 3rd largest city in Kimi-Suomi, considered by many to be the "Inland Capital (Sisämaan Pääkaupunki)" of the nation, and also considered the Rally Capital (Rallipääkaupunki) of the nation. The Lumen Ralli has been run for nearly 40 years now and has become the jewel in the domestic calendar, though this will be the first time that it will be used as an international rally event under the guise of the WSRC. Expect very passionate crowds here, despite the cold, and a Rally that will try to eke out every ability from a driver with 3 distinct sections adored by those who try to tame it.

THE RALLY/RALLI/RALLYET
Day One starts with the Shakedown on Aloitussilmukka (The Starting Loop), a 5km sprint that features a stretch of road and a section of pure snowy terrain, leading to the finish in the stadium section. Then we have Leg 1, nicknamed Sprintti (The Sprint), which will feature similar conditions to that of the shakedown, but with longer stages and a greater emphasis on car control in the windy forests that surround the city.

Day Two is all about the 2nd leg, known as Järvenranta Helvetti (The Lakeside Hell) - a section that features the gravel roads of the rural surrounds of the city, as well as a few jaunts upon the frozen Lake Peter (Pietarijärvi) to add to the challenge. These stages are all about your technical ability and will be an area that may see the most mistakes out of all 3 sections.

Day Three is our finale and the infamous section is known as Pitkä Juoksu Takaisin (The Long Run Back). This section is a combination of the first two sections, a true mix of both tarmac and gravel that will begin the long road back to Lumikukkulat. The final stage ends with a gravel start that will end with a mad dash into the city itself and back to the finish line on Aloitussilmukka.

Part 4 – The Gravel-ty of the situation.

Many more race sessions and segments have passed, and for a while beforehand, it would have seemed like the Valentians were struggling, unable to break through even the middle rankings, let alone the top spots. Tried as they might, there was little to nothing coming out of it. They arrived at Metavira, Togonistan as planned, quickly getting their belongings in order and getting the room as designated by them by the organizers. “Not bad,” Augustine said, with Angeline right beside him as she was looking at the signboards for the room that they were going to be in. Perhaps they knew about the Valentians, or maybe it was just the way that the organizers and the host nation treated them nicely, but Augustine and Angeline were thrilled by their room – 2 King-sized beds, one for each of them. Any other person would have felt like a king-sized bed would be oversized and unnecessary for them, but Valentians, they felt right at home, and it was one of those times where they went to another country and did not feel restricted by the bed, having either to shrink themselves down or curl up on the beds. Both of them slept early.

The next morning saw Augustine and Angeline sitting together at a relatively packed eatery, ordering their breakfast and their preferred beverages to go with. Augustine went for a doppio, figuring that he would need the fix for the competition that is coming ahead. Angeline went for a mocha, with a couple of toasts to go with. They ate silently for the next couple of minutes, though it didn’t feel awkward at any point in time; it would just seem like the duo were focusing on what is coming up, and perhaps with the reference to the results that they have so far been getting. As Augustine finished his breakfast, with half a cup of his coffee left, he finally spoke out to Angeline, though one that is not out of rage or any kind of negative feelings towards her, “We are losing out, Angeline. I am not sure by how far anymore, but I don’t feel like it’s working for these past few weeks. We either got the average at best, or that we were losing out big time towards these bigger names. Or they are just better.” Angeline nodded, finishing and gulping the last bits of her toast, and then pondering to herself as well. “Yes, it definitely is! Still, I have been looking at this track. I think we will have a better chance here. We are good at the gravel tracks, right?” Augustine was suddenly paying attention even more, coupled with the caffeine propping him up, “Hmm, yes. And this one, all of the three legs are gravel, right? At least, from what I have remembered- bah, let me look it up. Sorry, I was just going along with it as of now,” he took out his phone, swiping away all of the notifications from his game streaming channels and the groups that he played together with. He have informed his friends early on that he would be busy and away for this month or two, but if he could squeeze in a game session or two on his laptop, figured he can still try. That moment, of course, never came, for he was already more than occupied with his performance, as well as what would happen if they are not going to act and do better by the end of the season. Still, wearing the stoic look on his face, he checked his phone and looked at the schedule, confirming that Angeline was indeed right: All the segments at Metavira are going to be on gravel, “I don’t understand this. On snow, we already tried our best, and it certainly didn’t seem like we were doing good. And now at the gravel course, and we are hoping that we are going to be able to do it?” Angeline shrugged, still supportive and cheerful as ever, taking a sip of her drink, “I don’t know, Lorenzo. Let’s hope we got this one! We may not have a lot of luck on the snow, but on gravel? Not as experienced as we may be, we might just be able to pull it off.” With a few hours to spare, they finished their breakfasts.

And on that particular day, they were unable to believe and come to terms with what they were looking at on the scoreboard, right after all the three legs were over. They have done all they could – Augustine have done the best driving that the Valentians could ever get to see in Rally, while Angeline was doing as many callouts as she could, cutting the chatter and focusing on the mission of driving and navigating through. The results came in, and it hit them like a truck, though one that filled them up with adrenaline, joy, and all the energy in the world. “Fourth! Oh shit, we did it!” Angeline cheered, running towards Augustine to give a friendly arm and a hug, with Augustine then returning the favour. They could not believe it at first, but now they do, and that is all that matters. “Fourth, indeed,” Augustine nodded, giving a sharp clap and then walking back to the lounge with Angeline, “Now that is more of our style, haha! I guess sometimes luck can work in very unusual ways. Now we celebrate a little by eating a bit more than usual, and then we look around the cities.” “Sounds like a plan!” And that night, the Valentians slept well.

Lumen Ralli
Day 2

Dreadful. Absolutely dreadful. Not only had they consistently lost 2-4 seconds per stage to the Mikuren cars of Raatikainen and Gallegos, who simply had seemingly nailed their setups better than everyone else, but a puncture of the rear right tyre at stage 8 had made the Skua completely undrivable. Naomi had been forced to pull up to the side, as Heriko ran out of the car to perform a tyre change mid-stage. Eventually, by the end of the first day, the Togonistani duo was 55.471 seconds behind rally leaders Raatikainen and Blomqvist. Naomi was seriously pissed and Heriko was forced to listen through a set of juicy swearwords as the two were heading back to service park.

By the next morning, after a good night's sleep, Naomi seemed to have calmed down again. The two were having a cup of coffee as they went over the pacenotes and came up with a plan. Gravel roads were waiting ahead, something that should've been right up Naomi's alley. It was time to let it all out and push like crazy, as well as hope for their opponents to make some mistakes along the way. After all, after the first day, it wasn't like they had much to lose.

Last night, with Naomi heading off to her hotel room, Heriko had been waiting around to give the team some feedback regarding the car's behaviour in a non-escalating manner. Thus, the guys at service park had made some adjustments to the setup and day 2 had started with Naomi flying once again, securing herself two stage wins at the start of the day. Everything went fine until the news about the next two stages being cancelled reached them.

''What the f*ck?'' Naomi shook her head and nervously tapped her fingers at the steering wheel.

''I don't know. Apparently, the road is not safe to drive on.''

''Well ain't that just perfect! So, now we have two stages less to make our ground up. I swear, like, they saw our pace and now try to sabotage us to benefit Raatikainen.''

''Come on Naomi... don't be ridiculous. I'm sure there is a good reason for them to...''

''Good reason my arse. Like, come on, it's a load of horsesh*t!''

Frustration halves decision-making is what they say. By the time they took the Skua to start line at SS16, Naomi was still visibly annoyed. ''Remember... keep your head clear.'' Heriko said calmly and put his pacenotes ready. Completely ignoring her co-driver, Naomi pushed the throttle and took off. ''Right four, into left three, narrows, rock in...'' Naomi kept pushing the Skua through the stage, aggressively powersliding through corners. Everything in Naomi's behaviour reflected anger. The way she shifted gears, the way she turned the steering wheel. However, so far, it seemed to work. At the first split, Naomi was leading the stage by 1.3 seconds. ''Left five, cut, into right three, caution.'' Having cut the first corner, Naomi rapidly turned the steering wheel. However, this time, she went a bit too far as the Skua spun and ended up facing the way it had just came from. ''Oh, Jesus motherfriggin...'' Naomi shook her head again as she pushed the throttle and spun the Skua around to carry on. As expected, that stage time was nothing to write home about and once they made it across the line, Naomi let her head drop on the steering wheel as her door was opened for a post-stage interview.

''Naomi, you have shown amazing pace throughout this morning. What happened at the stage, was it slippery?''

Without saying anything, Naomi raised her head up again, pushed the microphone away from her face and slammed the door shut. Leaving the interviewer baffled, Naomi drove off and started heading towards the next stage. The following stages went without any major incidents, even though Naomi's pace wasn't really what it had been in the morning. Still, everything ended better than yesterday and by the end of the final stage of the day, Naomi even managed to smile to the reporters.

''You have shown some solid driving by the end of the day. What is your plan for tomorrow?''

''We keep pushing, do what we can. There's like, only so much we can do, but we never give up.''

“Ah, Metavira,” John Watt said as he took a deep breath and inhaled as much of the air at the home base of Rally Togonistan as he could. “Just think about it, guys,” he continued. “This is the same air that she’s been breathing and the same ground that she’s stepped on since the start of the WSRC. Just think about it!” he repeated. “Imagine it and bask in the fact that we are literally stepping on and breathing in greatness!”

“Johnny, for the love of God, will you please calm the fuck down?” Trevon Gallegos said as he followed his friend down the path towards the tents assigned for the drivers. “Don’t make a scene, especially about that. We are on your crush’s home turf, after all. You wouldn’t want to embarrass yourself in front of her, do you?”

“I don’t have a crush on her!” Johnny insisted. “I am just an admirer of her skills behind the wheel of a rally car, that’s it.”

“Call it whatever you want, Johnny,” Tre snorted. “We all know what it really is.”

“I’m telling you, I don’t have a crush on Naomi Keretene!” John pressed.

“Sure, bruv, keep telling yourself that,” Tre nodded without any hint of sympathy at all.

“Oh, piss off,” John muttered, and then he knelt down on the ground, took out from his bag a cylindrical object that looked like a can or a metallic jar, looked around to make sure that nobody was looking at him, and then he opened up the jar and began scooping up soil into it.

“Are you seriously grabbing some Togonistani soil to add to your Keretene shrine?!” Tre asked in disbelief.

“Of course not, bruv,” Johnny replied. “This is for the other collection.” John Watt had collected soil from all of the places where Tre and Vicky Reotutar had driven for Rally Star, and now he had continued that little “tradition” by collecting soil from Aboveland, Wakanai, and now Togonistan.

“Besides, it’s not a shrine, it’s just a collection of items relating to Naomi’s WSRC career,” John clarified. “And if I were to add some Togonistani soil to that, I wouldn’t grab that soil from just anyplace. It has to be soil that Naomi’s actually stepped on.”

“Yeah, man, you’re not a fanboy at all, just passionate,” Tre muttered sarcastically, and then he continued on towards the tent, knowing that at least the girls would be following him shortly. He couldn’t say the same for Johnny though, who seemed to be really determined to pack in as much soil into the can as possible.

By now, both Tre and Vicky knew the drill: get out there, be as fast as humanly possible, and keep expectations low to avoid more disappointment than they’ve already had. It had served them both well so far in their rallying careers, and so far it was still holding true. But things always had a tendency of surprising people when they least expected it, and today was one of those days. Tre felt that shakedown was decent, but he definitely wasn’t expecting to be the second fastest driver on the field, second only to the hometown hero Naomi Keretene herself. And then when it came to the actual running of the first leg, in which Tre and Vicky went second to last by virtue of their finish in the shakedown earlier in the day, they surprised themselves (and everyone else) once again by actually going fastest overall across all nine stages on the first day. They and the team were happy that they topped the first leg, but both Tre and Vicky were also surprised that they even made it so far high in the first place. But there was one person who was a bit miffed at this particular development, and he made sure to tell Tre all about it.

“Dude, you can’t just go out there and steal Naomi’s thunder just like that!” John Watt told Tre as night fell over the course. “You just can’t!”

“Come on now, Johnny,” Tre snorted. “Are you really going to go full simp for her now? In case you haven’t noticed, I’m not just any random driver from the street anymore. I’m actually fighting for points here in the WSRC!”

“Of course I know that, bruv,” John replied. “But can’t you and Vicky just go win the race after this one? Naomi needs this! Remember what happened to her here last season?”

“And what about me? What about Vicky?” Tre asked back. “What if this is the only chance that we’re going to get to win a rally this season? Have you thought about that?”

“Don’t be like that to me, Tre,” John said. “I’m not telling you to crash out of this race or anything that silly. I’m just, you know, asking you to take it a little bit easy so Naomi has a chance to actually catch up and look like she has a chance to get the lead over you.”

“All right, Johnny, tell the truth,” Tre said as he turned to face his red-haired friend. “How much did Iskabil pay you to ask me to take it easy on the next leg?”

“Trevon Isidro Gallegos! How dare you!” John Watt cried out. “How could you? How could you accuse your friend of accepting a bribe from another team?” he asked in a very dramatic and theatrical manner.

“When said friend starts asking me to take it down a notch when I’m on course to lead the rest of the field in a rally at the home of one of my competitors, that gets my brain thinking,” Tre replied. “But in all seriousness, Johnny, I get where you’re coming from. I really do. You really want your girl Keretene to finally do well at her home track, but I gotta think about myself as well! I gotta put myself first before anyone else. You’ve seen how cantankerous our car is! If it’s not breaking down on us, then we’re the ones breaking them! This might be the one and only chance that I could be on course for a podium or even a win! And Vicky and I have been feeling like we’re on rails this time around, and we really don’t want to mess this up. So I’m sorry, Johnny, but I can’t promise you anything this time around. You can do anything else—heck, you could even hope or pray that that “curse” everyone keeps talking about strikes again—if you want Keretene to win this race, because I certainly won’t do anything for you or for anyone else. I gotta look out for myself at least once, you know.”

Sure enough, on the second day of Rally Togonistan, Trevon Gallegos and Victoria Reotutar would lose their lead to the hometown pairing of Keretene and Karaka, and more the more superstitious-minded of the WSRC’s fanbase, there was definitely a sense that things were definitely not going Mikuren’s way. The Fleftic pair were definitely keeping the Togonistanis honest throughout the first half of the second leg, but then disaster would strike for Tre and Vicky on stage 14. While navigating a tight right turn, the back end of the Mikuren Schkeska car (whatever it was properly called, which neither Tre nor Vicky had still managed to find out) got loose and smacked into a tree on the very edge of the track. Vicky didn’t miss a beat and interjected “It’s okay, keep going, keep going,” in the middle of her reading of her pacenotes, but Tre immediately knew something was wrong once he applied the throttle. “I can’t feel any power in the rear again!” he cried out.

Vicky could now feel the difference in speed as well, and she set aside her pacenotes and said, “Find a place to park so we can look at it!”

“Don’t need to,” Tre replied. “I already know what’s wrong.”

Tre finally found a clearing which was far enough away from the rest of the track that nobody would crash into them barring very extraordinary circumstances. Tre hopped out of the Mikuren and walked over to the rear left wheel, which was jutting out of its well at an unnatural angle, just as he suspected. "I knew it," he said to nobody in particular. "I fucking knew it!" he cried out as he kicked the loose wheel in frustration.

That one little mistake in the tight right-hander and that bump against the tree was enough to knock Tre Gallegos and Vicky Reotutar out of contention for the victory at Togonistan.

"There you go," Tre confronted John Watt later that night while the Mikuren and Schkeska mechanics got to work fixing the rear axle of Tre's car for the second time in as many weeks. "Your driver's now got an open goal to win at her home event. Happy now?"

"Oh, spare me, Trevon," John snorted. "I did not ask you to crash into that tree. I did not ask you to park the car so you could check the extent of the damage. And I certainly didn't ask your rear axle to break itself once again at the tiniest bit of contact with that tree! And by the way, a little bit of contact is an understatement. You practically bitch-slapped that tree with the back of your car! Now, I will admit that I asked you to take it easy so Naomi stands a chance to do well at her home event, but this isn't what I wanted at all! I wanted a straight fight between you and her for the win. This… I don't even know what to call this, but this is not how I thought this would end for you. I'm telling you, Tre, nobody wants this."

Tre sighed and shook his head. "Yeah, you're right," he finally said. "I know you're right. But sometimes you just can't help that feel that sometimes things just aren't working out. Goddamn it!" he yelled suddenly, briefly catching the attention of some of the mechanics before they turned back to their work. "Our rhythm was good, man. Vicky and I were hitting our marks. And then the car just got loose at that one turn… I don't know anymore. And it's the rear left wheel that got broken again. Makes me think twice about how they fixed that thing the first time around."

"Hey now, bruv, if you think that that curse that everyone else is talking about has anything to do with it…" John began, but Tre immediately cut him off.

"I don't wanna hear it, Johnny," Tre said. "It's all moot in the end. Whether there's a curse or not, what's done is done. Vicky and I have got a nineteen-second penalty to surmount tomorrow. Can we do it? Probably not. But that's what we've got to work with. And, barring something crazy like our crash happening to her too, Keretene's basically got this thing under lock and key now." He then looked at John with a smirk and said, "At least one of us is gonna celebrate at the end of these three days."

"Go fuck yourself, Gallegos," John retorted, but there was also a smile on his lips.

Tre and Vicky would be able to claw some time back on the third and final leg of Rally Togonistan, but the penalties that they had picked up as a result of being unable to compete in the stages after stage 14 of leg 2 were, as predicted, too big for them to surmount. Naomi Keretene and Heriko Karaka did secure the victory at their home event, and right behind them were their Iskabil teammates Poldov and Ponomarjov. And who else was on the podium with them? None other than the Kimi-Suomen pair of Raatikainen and Blomqvist. Their luck had certainly turned around since that week in Wakanai when they had been flying so high at the beginning of the Winter Classic only to be cruelly brought back down to earth by the circumstances. Now they were the ones celebrating alongside the team that had won the constructors' championship last season. It would be a hell of a confidence booster to those guys since WSRC would be heading to Laura and Pehr Henrik's home event next time around. And, as everyone knew, confidence was almost as good as actual pace and talent in motor racing. And while Tre did join in with the rest of the team in celebrating their podium finish, he was still a bit bitter about the whole thing, and he was left wondering what could have been. That could have been him and Vicky on the podium, maybe even the top step itself, but the rear end of his car had said no.

He would have to teach that thing to follow him instead of the other way around when it counts the most.

After Lumen Ralli

''...and you thought it was a bad idea,'' Ivan Poldov said as he took another sip of whiskey from his glass while admiring the trophies placed on a table in front of him. Following the podium ceremony, he and his co-driver Vitaly had spent the evening celebrating with the team, before disappearing into their hotel room for some peace and quiet. However, that didn't mean the celebrations had ended, as Ivan had called the hotel reception and asked for a bottle of their finest whiskey to be delivered to their room. The two men were comfortably sitting on chairs, enjoyed their drink and had a good time with radio playing some calm classical music in the background.

''I never said it was necessarily a bad idea,'' Vitaly replied as he scratched his thick beard, ''I just said it was an unreasonable one. Although, I have to admit, if you would've told me we'd end up winning a rally, I would've immediately checked you into the nearest mental asylum.'' With a smirk on his face, Vitaly emptied his glass and leant towards the table to refill it once again.

Ivan nod. ''I can't believe it myself either. It feels so weird. So... surreal.'' What followed was a few minutes of silence, not counting the noises made by glasses and the calming sounds of violin. Ivan wasn't really that much into classical music, it was Vitaly who had fiddled around with the radio and stumbled upon the station. Although, with the white snowfall outside, Ivan had to admit it fit with the atmosphere quite well. His friend had a good taste.

Eventually, Vitaly broke the silence again: ''What do you think of the Togonistani girl?''

Ivan scratched his head. ''Naomi? I... I mean, what am I supposed to think of her?'' He didn't really get where Vitaly was going with the conversation. Did he want him to badmouth their teammate behind her back?

''She is fast. However, she's also a bit... unhinged, don't you think?'' Vitaly looked deep into Ivan's eyes. ''Everyone is talking about it. I admit, my English isn't the best, but even I can understand that much.''

Ivan sighed. ''Maybe. I mean, I get along with her just fine. Also, Konrad ranks her highly as a driver from what I've gathered and that is good enough for me. She may have a few screws loose in her head, but don't we all? No sane person would sit in a WSRC car to begin with,'' Ivan took another sip from his glass, ''why are you bringing her up all of a sudden anyways?''

''Because, she is leading the championship now. And guess who is second?''

''We are, I know that. Still, I'm sorry my friend, but I don't understand what you're hinting at.''

''Axel has been struggling big time. If it goes on like that, it can very well end up being us against Keretene in the title fight. I admit, I am surprised to hear myself saying this, but think about it. Naomi is, right now, considered by the team as de facto first driver. However, I think that... you could be it instead.''

Ivan squinted. ''Vitjak, what is going on? Are you trying to drag me into some sort of inner-team rivalry? As I said, Konrad has faith in Naomi...''

''But we didn't really get this seat thanks to Konrad, did we?'' Vitaly finished up another glass and put it on the table, ''the word inside the team goes that a certain someone was never too pleased with the team signing Keretene. The very certain someone who just so happened to give us the opportunity.''

Having looked at the floor for a few moments, Ivan eventually said: ''Marko.''

''Bingo. Why don't we just, you know, sit down with him some day? Have a couple of beers and, perhaps, test the water? Should the time come where every point is at stake, we need people inside the team to be on our side. You can't play the good Samaritan forever, Ivan. You convinced me to join this mess in the first place. Now, I'm trying to convince you to go all the way.''

After a few more moments of silence, Ivan snorted. ''Yeah... I'll think about it. Sorry, I think this whiskey has gone into our heads. Perhaps we should just go to sleep.'' Having said that, Ivan drank his glass empty and stood up. ''I'll just go take a shower first, okay?''

''Yeah, sure.'' Vitaly nod as he watched his friend head off to the bathroom. Sure, it's just the whiskey. It must be.

WSRC 2
Round 4
Lumen Ralli
Lumikukkulat, Kimi-Suomi

Home. Koti. Hem.
It certainly felt good to be back home and for both Laila Raatikainen and Pehr Henrik Blomqvist, bringing Car #77 home already felt like a dream no matter what happened afterwards. The Lumen Ralli is always a special event on the calendar over here, a symbol of our arctic identity coming to life once more in Northern AO, but now that it was a WSRC event (the halfway point of the season, in fact) the hype was going overboard across the ice and snow. Couple that with a podium last time out, and you have the seeds for an incredible weekend of action here in the Rouge Kingdom and one that would certainly be attended by a lot of passionate rally fans. Trying to perform in front of the home crowd was always going to be difficult and the pressure was certainly going to be on their shoulders no matter what...but they could only try, right?

You certainly start to realise what the job at hand is when you start at Aloitussilmukka and The Starting Loop certainly would kick things off with a bang. The teammates would end up in interesting starting positions, with #84 (Gallegos/Reotutar) in 9th and #87 (Aurinen/Kailenta) in 5th, while the battle towards the top was certainly tight as all hell. #76 (Södergren/Jansson) would end up in 3rd only 0.075 and the battle for pole would go down to the wire between #77 and #1 (Novikov/Baardsen). Taking on an Iskabil-Ælund head-on certainly sounded daunting, but the local duo weren't going to give up in front of their faithful and it certainly did go down to the wire. In the end, #77 beat #1 to pole by 0.001 - the tightest margin you could ever imagine - and everyone around was certainly happy with that one.

Then came the 1st Leg itself - Sprintti, Stages 1-11, the fast section in the windy forests that put a heavy emphasis on car control. This section seemed designed to pull surprises and it would certainly deliver that and then some. #76, who started P3, crashed on Stage 6 and had to take 18 minutes. #1, who was beaten to pole by the highest of margins, would suffer a similar fate the very next stage and took 15 minutes. #87 would end up in 9th while the other pink cars would enter the night in a 1-2, #77 ahead of #84 by 6 seconds with #46 (Mëlander/Lösspeng) in 3rd. The pace certainly felt good out there...but the pressure was certainly building.

That pressure would explode in Leg 2 and Järvenranta Helvetti would certainly feel like The Lakeside Hell for some out there as the snow switched partners from asphalt to gravel. It was supposed to consist of Stages 12-18, but both 14 and 15 would end up being cancelled as the WSRC felt that spectator safety would be at risk on those courses. That will certainly be taken into account for future events but for everyone's gratitude, we did still manage to have a few taunts on Lake Peter in this technical section. The standings were also all change, as a great day from #87 took them to the top of the standings over #46 (Mëlander/Lösspeng) by 17 seconds and #57 (Poldov/Ponomarjov) by 18. Both #84 and #77 would make some errors out there, which would see them tumble down to 5th and 8th respectively. In a session with no issues for anyone in terms of DNFs, ending up 55 seconds down wasn't too bad at all...but obviously, they would've wanted to be closer to the top. But hey, at least they weren't a bit of a hot head like the joint championship leader Naomi Keretene, whose angry tendencies were certainly starting to irk everyone the wrong way - especially as she commented that the two stage cancellations were only made to help the locals. Laila didn't appreciate that in the post-leg team meeting, calling her fellow female driver isopäinen (big headed) while PHB held nothing back by calling her both självcentrerad (self-centred) and en gnällig skitstövel (a whiny asshole).

All of that would lead to an uninterrupted final day at Pitkä Juoksu Takaisin, the combination of the last two days that lead back into Lumikukkulat and Aloitussilmukka on the final stage. If you wanted a bit of a repeat of last week in Togonistan, then you'd come to the right place and the drama was certainly plentiful. Both #1 and #16 (Imparato/Nogueira) would not make it to the end of Stage 23 and #23 (Keretene/Karaka), the championship leaders, would fail to score a single point - which certainly put a smile on PHB's face. In the end, #57 managed to win both the day and the rally by 29 seconds to put the overall championship hunt back within reach of the chasing pack. #84 would end up 4th on the day and 5th overall, #87 was 9th today but would end up 2nd overall, 10 seconds ahead of...#77. Yes, they did it again. It certainly was tight, but the locals managed to pull out of the bag on the final day again to make it into 3rd by half a second over #46. Three days of competition and 3rd was decided by half a second. Talk about the beauty of the sport and all that. Another rally, another podium and a 2-3 for Sport Mikuren at that.

This run of form means that Laila and Pehr Henrik now sit 6th overall on 28 points, all of them coming in the last two events, 1 point behind #87 and 13 ahead of #84. Still, all of that combined effort has pushed this "no hope squad" into 3rd in the Teams Standings with a great haul of 64 points - a long way behind Iskabil-Ælund WRT, as expected, but only 5 back on AP-Dëritee WRT with 4 more events to go. Up next shall be a trip to Lisander as Grandeville hosts the Optimus™ Rally de Lisander over gravel and...the exact same distance as the Lumen Ralli. Huh.

Home certainly brought the heart and another fightback podium. What more can #77 do in the 2nd half of this wacky season?

“I hate snow,” Trevon Gallegos said, but before he could say anything more, he was quickly interrupted with a finger to his lips from Vicky Reotutar.

“Then you’re in luck, Trevon,” Vicky told him. “Because this next event that we’re going to is not just snow. Apparently, it has everything: snow, gravel, tarmac; you name it, they’ve got it. So you don’t have to worry about spinning out of the road or whatever it is that makes you afraid of snow, because you’ve got everything else that you actually want and need in the other stages!”

“Why thank you, my dear wifey,” Tre muttered with a hint of sarcasm. “You truly are my rock in these troubling times. But seriously now, at this point, I’m no longer that concerned with what surface we’re going to be running on for the next event. I’m more concerned about the car. You know what I’m talking about, right? Most of the time, that thing goes where I want it to go, but then there are those few times that that car just gets a mind of its own and flings itself into the nearest stationary object. I’m telling you, we would definitely have been on the podium in Togonistan if I didn’t lose the rear end there.”

“Don’t worry, Tre, I feel the same,” Vicky assured her husband. “I know exactly how you feel. I was bummed. And you know that I was bummed. Why do you think I didn’t go with you to celebrate the podium with the rest of the team?”

“Oh, so that’s why you didn’t go?” Tre asked, this time with genuine surprise. “Why didn’t you say anything?”

“It didn’t seem like it would be appropriate for me to say anything about it,” Vicky replied noncommittally. “You said it yourself! That should have been us on the podium, not them! Without that crash, without that time penalty, we would have been fighting for that win against Johnny’s crush! And I also can’t show my face there, not after I made fun of them for the… you know. For the… thing. The thing that we all talked about before all hell broke loose. That thing.”

“Oh, come on,” Tre shook his head. “Not you too? Don’t tell me you believe in the curse thing too?”

“I’m not saying I am,” Vicky defended herself. “But I’m not saying I don’t believe it either. But isn’t it just a little bit funny that at the moments when everyone associated with this team has talked about there being a curse or there not being a curse, something happens to the team that screws up at least one of its drivers? Don’t you just find it a little bit too coincidental?”

“You want to know what I really think about all of that? Nothing,” Tre replied to his own nothing. “I don’t try to think anything about it because it’s not worth wasting my two remaining brain cells on. What I want to focus on is what I can actually do to make the car follow my commands all the time, or basically whatever it is that improves our times. The speed is clearly there, both in the car and between the two of us. And when we’re in a rhythm, we’re in a rhythm. The only problem we really have is getting this car to go where I really want it to go. None of this loose rear end nonsense. Once the crew have taken care of that, I really think that we’re going to be a monster in this machine. We might actually get the chance to take the fight to Iskabil.”

“You really think so?” Vicky asked.

“Of course I do,” Tre nodded. “The evidence is there for all to see. It’s only a matter of these outside factors affecting us that’s stopped us from being able to do what we know we can do. Diyos ko po, we’ve actually won races before! Sure, it was up against other guys who also didn’t know a lot about rally, but we still had to finish first in order to win, right? Winning takes both skill and luck. And I know we’ve got the skill. Now all we need is a little bit of luck, and we’ll be able to make more than just a name for ourselves.”

“You think we’ll finally get lucky at Kimi-Suomi?” Vicky asked.

“We should,” Tre said matter-of-factly. “We’ve already hit our low point with that crash in Togonistan. There’s nowhere else for us to go but up from now on.”

And on the first day of the Kimi-Suomi Lumen Ralli, it really did look as if the luck of the Fleftic pair had turned for the better once again. Shakedown saw the 84 car down in 9th place once again, a place that had become familiar for both Gallegos and Reotutar at this point in time, but once it was time to take to the stages in real time, they finally showed why Sport Mikuren had been right to offer them a place on the team. Tre and Vicky were once again in the rhythm of their lives, hitting their marks and navigating the course as fast as their car would take them. The car itself was behaving so far as well; no snaps of oversteer or rear ends getting loose at the most inopportune moments. At the end of the day, it was enough to put the Fleftics just six seconds behind the hometown favorites of Raatikainen and Blomqvist for a Mikuren 1-2.

And then their luck would turn yet again, once again for the worse, on the second day of Lumen Ralli.

Tre and Vicky were still on their rhythm and hitting their marks, and the car was still following Tre’s commands, but this time their misfortune would not have anything at all to do with their driving or their equipment. No, it was actually outside factors that would cost them the chance to remain on the podium for the rest of the event.

“Five hundred left three, two hundred caution jump into right one—what the fuck!” Vicky cried out, and Tre himself had to swerve to avoid the obstacles that had suddenly appeared on the track in front of him. “What the fuck are they doing so close to the road?”

“You’re asking me!” Tre shot back.

It was no secret that rally spectators were one of the craziest kinds of people out there. Rally drivers themselves were already considered crazy enough for wanting to get into these cars and slalom it around muddy forests, snowy hills, and pothole-filled roads, but those fans and spectators who actually watched the events from right on the edges of the tracks were certifiably even crazier than the drivers themselves. But the truly crazy ones were those who actually tried to touch the cars as they passed by. Tales of fingertips getting stuck on hoods, windows, and other parts of the car were common throughout Coalition Competitive Rally (CCR) and its nation-based predecessors, and Tre was not keen on finding someone else’s finger on the car at the end of any rally.

But this was different. This wasn’t just one person sticking their arm out in an attempt to touch a car speeding by them. This was a whole group of spectators actually making their way onto the track for reasons that he could only guess. “Do they actually want to kill themselves now or what?” Tre asked nobody in particular. “Why are they encroaching on the track limits? Someone’s going to get killed if they don’t take care of this quickly!”

“Get out of the way!” Vicky shouted at the spectators stepping onto the track, not sure if they could understand her speaking English. She waved her arms to the side, hoping that sign language would be easier to understand. At the same time, Tre navigated his car around the groups of people, taking care not to bump into anyone even while some of the braver or stupider ones reached out to touch the pink Mikuren. “If anything is getting killed right now, it’s going to be our time,” Tre muttered.

“Can’t we have just one clean leg 2 for once this season?” Vicky asked. “Just once, I would love to have a clean leg 2!” As Tre finally made his way past the spectators, Vicky turned around to look at them and shouted, “Tanga! Bobo! Gago!

“Take it easy, honey,” Tre soothed her. “The damage is done. It’s too late now.”

Word of the spectators getting onto the track eventually made its way to the organizers, and stages 14 and 15 were cancelled on spectator safety grounds while the organizers got to work fixing the boundaries and reminding the spectators to not get too close. Stage 16 marked the restart of leg 2, but at that point, Tre and Vicky had lost all of their momentum from the previous day, and they were making rookie mistakes left and right. The end of the day couldn’t come sooner for them, but even when the driving part was finally over, there was still some drama left to deal with, although fortunately for the Fleftics, they were not at all involved with it.

“Have you guys heard the latest news?” Daisy Samuels, close friend of both Vicky and Tre and stepsister of their other friend John Watt, asked the others as they went back to their tent. “Someone isn’t happy that two stages got cancelled for the spectators. Three guesses who that driver is.”

“Laura and Pehr?” Vicky answered.

“Nope,” Daisy shook her head. “But the driver in question is of the same gender as Laura, and also the locals are angry that she would think that they would stoop so low as to use spectator safety to sabotage her race.”

“All right, I give up,” Tre raised his hands in surrender. “Who the fuck is it, Daze?”

“It’s Keretene!” Daisy replied. “She’s angry at the Kimi-Suomen authorities for cancelling those two stages because she thought it’s the locals trying to rig the whole thing in favor of their drivers. Of course, once this news got around to the rest of the field, it made its way to Laura and Pehr, and I’m sure even you can guess just how well that went down with them.”

“I can imagine,” Tre muttered sarcastically. “Also, what the fuck is Keretene complaining about? She’s still fourth best out of everyone at the end of leg 2! Is she angry that Poldov and Ponomarjov are beating her? Hey, if anyone has any right to be angry about those bastard spectators, it should be me! It should be me and Vicky! We’re the ones who actually lost a shitload of time because some people couldn’t be arsed with staying a few inches to the side of the road! We’re gonna lose another podium because of this! If anyone has the right to complain about those cancelled stages then it’s got to be us!”

“Whoa,” Daisy muttered as she sat down next to Vicky. “I’ve never seen him this worked up over something so trivial before,” she whispered into the other woman’s ear.

“Trivial? Trivial?! Have you even been watching us this season, Daze?” Vicky replied incredulously. “Have you seen the things that have happened to us that have put an end to what was supposed to be a brilliant run to a podium or even a win? If you did then you’ll know that nothing is ever trivial to Tre anymore. Just… don’t say anything about it. Let him work through it. We’ve got everything else except luck go our way so far. We can still get something good out of this. Probably not a podium, but I’m sure we can get good points. Just don’t trigger him by saying anything else right now.”

Leg 3 did indeed turn out to be better for the Fleftic pairing overall, finishing the day in fourth place. But because of all the the time that they had lost while getting around the spectators during the second leg, in the end Gallegos and Reotutar finished only in 5th place, while both of their Mikuren teammates ended up on the podium. Neither Raatikainen nor Aurinen ended up winning Lumen Ralli though; that honor went to the unlikely duo of Poldov and Ponomarjov from Kassegrochia and Iskabil. Despite all of that though, three of the cars in the top five were colored pink. Iskabil may have been the team to beat this season, but at the halfway point of the second season of WSRC, Sport Mikuren could very well give them a run for their money.

Pajari Bemoans "Uphill Battle" At TGK-VK as Technical Director Andersson Announces Upgrades
On the eve of the TGK Albatross GT4 WSRC Evo I, Koivuslotter driver Sakke Pajari has admitted that his time at the bi-national outfit has been "tougher than expected."

GRANDEVILLE — Despite the news of imminent upgrades coming from the Vankkavalta Kyvytelsesbilletalli workshop in the Abovian capital, Abovian TGK-VK hire Sakke Pajari has maintained that his debut season for the Koaiwan manufacturer has been "an uphill battle". The 18-year-old's comments ring true in light of the team's results following promising showings in pre-season shakedown, with the three-car team just over double the points ahead of embattled, last-placed home team Camden WRT, and with the Abovian having scored, on average, less than one point per rally at the halfway point of the season.

"I'm extremely grateful to have my seat and my chances to perform," Pajari said, "but it has been a very harsh reality so far. I have made mistakes myself, but I am not yet comfortable with the car."

The Abovian's season alongside new co-driver Jarkko Kalliomäki has been marred by misfortune since the opening round in Aboveland. Violent accidents then and in Togonistan rapidly piled the pressure on the young hopeful's shoulders, while a lack of pace on snow — previously regarded as his strong suit — has also failed to see him make amends when the timing seemed right. The culprit, he explains, is multifaceted.

"A lot of things have changed for me this season: new co-driver, new team, new car; and I must admit, a new strategy, which I must change." The strategy, he explains, refers to his driving style. "Before, I was maybe too careful at times, so this season I wanted to prove I had the pace to really compete. But I had already gotten used to the handling of the HMG car before I took the wheel of the Albatross, and I have not found the spot yet where I can push comfortably for pace and for consistency."

Technical director and founder of Vankkavalta Kyvytelsesbilletalli Mats Andersson also believes that more is to blame for the team's struggles. "In reality," he said, "[Vankkavalta Kyvytelsesbilletalli's] background is in performance tuning and preparing vehicles to race. But we lack experience running a coordinated, complex motorsport outfit — our time in AOCAR was comparatively simple."

Andersson was more brutally honest when revealing his own reasoning for the team's troubled season. "Tatehama Giken Kogyo came to us because we had the technical know-how of how to build a rally car without the operational knowledge of running a motorsport team, but then we found a new problem: setup. We have a new car, with new technologies, running in a new environment, but our drivers have found a lot of question marks we can't resolve. Ren [Watanabe] has the most solid motorsport experience, and it shows in her results and how she has adapted to a car she is fundamentally familiar with — but Sakke [Pajari] is still young and developing, and Bo [Boludo] has experience in a completely different motorsport culture than what is international competition."

Despite the setbacks, however, and in lieu of claims from Pajari and pre-season speculation that the three-winged Albatross would be a fundamentally unbalanced machine, Andersson believes that the base car has what it takes to battle for podiums and victories in the latter half of the season — especially from Auruna onwards, as a host of improvements are slated to arrive onto the Albatross chassis in the car's first evolution model.

"We've found a way to make the chassis stiffer while also greatly improving the weight distribution," Andersson reveals. "There's little to be done with the powertrain, as that comes from the factory and we're quite content with it, but these improvements will massively improve handling, make the car more predictable, and will hopefully help to keep it more planted on faster sections."

"The Evo is coming in Auruna," he admitted. "We've run into production delays at the workshop; the debut rally in Brukkifordet was hastily prepared for and we had a backlog of final modifications still. But for the second half of the season, we are committed to turning things round. We are here to fight, and here to stay."

"Three point two," mutters Henrik as the Skua flutters to a halt past the flying finish. "Faster," he clarifies, while Axel twiddles the knobs on his steering wheel and flicks some switches on the center console.

"Okay," he replies quietly. "Good."

Though he's not being forthcoming — their relationship had begun to grow tumultuous as the season wore on and the dreams of a title defense slipped away — he speaks with a grin on his face. The last time he'd been in Lisander, he'd also been at the wheel of a race car: a short, stubby, white and blue machine from San Jose Guayabal; a race in which he'd finished fourth and slipped past the world's best grand prix drivers on his way to the championship lead. His WGPC career, only five-and-a-half years old now, felt like a life ago — how much of the youthful Axel was left, in mind, in body, in soul? He hadn't paused to ruminate on the whereabouts of his past self — he'd hardly had any time to in the hectic bustle of the WSRC calendar — but at the very slightest he credited it with his outlook on the rally. Even as a tarmac specialist, the Lisanderian roads were enticing. Fast, flowing forest roads and mountain tracks, coupled with quick, smooth gravel trails on the final day, all based around the Grandeville circuit: a banquet celebration of motorsport, brought to the hearts of some of the most passionate, if unlucky, people in the multiverse. Maybe, some part of his youthful, intrepid self had remained in Grandeville in time for him to come swooping back to it as an entirely different person, in an entirely different situation, with an entirely different goal.

Maybe he needed some of that youthful, intrepid, long-gone self of his to pick himself up by the bootstraps and get a move on: the championship was all but gone, with even the continuation of Henrik in the right seat on the line.

But he'd be damned if he wouldn't try to make amends.

'That's it! Much better.' shouted Malo 'Bo' Boludo, as the unexpected second leg, where twisting gravel road posted a massive challenge. 'Finishing second after a rough start..not bad!' Him and Charlotte, his wife and partner to this rallying mission, gave each other a high five, as the car slowed down before halting for once.

'Yes, we did it doofus! This is good enough...I think. We may even be able to aim for the first place if all works out,' Charlotte nodded, the tension in her eyes finally loosening for once.

This was perhaps a sign of relief that the team, and more specifically TGK-VK overall, had needed after a rough first half of the season where most of their early-season plans, which ironically were placed on the first two races of the season with some ice and snow in neighbouring nations of Aboveland and Quebec, had gone derailed. The TGK-VK, a valiant state mission originating from Koaiwa, was a well-run machine, but the strokes of luck, more often than not, had gone past them.

On the first two weeks of the season it was Watanabe's team, who they had most likely expected the least out on the ice and snow, who performed above expectations while everybody - including the pair - had fallen short of the target. And both Bo and Charlotte knew that their performance at home, or even some of the halves that season, did not exactly translate themselves to their capabilities - who would have expected a fucking bear in the first leg of Wakanai Winter Classic?.

Still, they knew that no matter the panic those leading the ship in Koaiwa had, they still had chance to quickly climb up the ranks. A solid turnaround in Kimi-Suomi, where both Pajari and Boludo had finally gotten their first meaningful points (well for Bo and Char, this was the first race they placed on top 10, ope), seemed to indicate so, and splendid leg 2 results, where Pajari and Bo actually finished on top two of the leg, meant that former's standing fifth and our favourite Analanaian duo...atop the standings.

Of course, this did not mean much until the leg 3 were going to come to a meaningful finish and this veteran duo, whose chemistry were unparalleled since they were married with a 5-year old lying around, knew that a strong leg could only mean so much without consistency. Can they maintain it to the finish this time?
