Corrupt Dictatorship

OOC: Was unable to RP for previous week, so catching up to that at least.

The flight from Aji No Moto to Auruna was a long one for the heroes and heroines of Bitten Heroes WGP2 Team, and with the very next week's race set to play out in the hilly jungles of Akresna Circuit, Ilya and his crew largely stayed quiet for the course of the flight.

For Ilya, this had also meant that he was able to catch up on his missed readings of NSSCRA romance novels, as he read through an illegally-circulated one that involved the 'supposed adventures' of Kai Qiang and Duke of Guilin. Of course, whether the details were true or not, or whether he found the books on the stashes of extraneous documents back in the storage compartment of his jet plane didn't matter. All that mattered was that Ilya was having a good time with it all.

Life on the fast lane, that's me, he thought, as he got to the part where there were intimate mentions about 'leg-gings'. There was no doubt that the race in Aji No Moto, where he was able to turn around the narrative and secure consistently decent results, got him to think more about it all. And that's something he needed. While Ilya Tsunopin didn't always keep up with news, mostly due to how flooded his social media feeds have been at times with his commitments, and his manager, Dr. Balthazar Grey, being really good at filtering the needs for Ilya's sake, he knew that his awful mid-stretch certainly didn't give the best of images for him.

Well fuck them, right? Ilya chuckled, as he turned around the page and continued to read with much intrigue. But before that, he took a look around at his fellow crew members. They were all sleeping, from the team leader Amy Graad to Athan his teammate, and Ilya was relieved they didn't hold much interest with some of Ilya's personal interests.

It was already a bit of challenge for Ilya, a 18-year old brute, to persuade Amy and others to let him drive while topless with only a shorts on, and the 69Xer knew better than to speak openly (or even discretely) about his own adventures. Whether sudden or planned out, on any nightlife scene he would travel into, they almost always had some sort of...'outcomes'. Some of the scenes would finish with thousands spent on a floor, many would end with Ilya Vadimovich waking up on someone else's bed at 6am in the morning, and almost all of them add to the tales of sordid madness he would show when not out thinking about racing.....all of which adds to the camera flashes and second-hand news that would spread every day and night.

Of course, Ilya knew better than to give too much darn about that as well. He was still a child in that he just wanted to race, and that he was going to give it all whenever possible. And that's why they can't get rid of me, chuckled Ilya Vadimovich. They needed a spark and I'm giving it to them. This was probably true - Ilya knew that he was adding something valuable to the team that was still building itself for a long-lasting legacy in the WGP2 circuit, and on a retooling year like this, where Athan didn't hold great long-term expectations for the Bitten Heroes and Ilya was a kid fresh out of high school, he was serving his role perfectly.

Now, what really mattered to everybody, on this joint adventure of Bitten Heroes WGP2 team, was that there's a bit more hope of both drivers, whose consistencies have not been stellar at all, to do well. It's not to say that this has never happened, but for most part it's been 1) Athan playing well but Ilya playing awful, 2) Ilya playing much better but Athan having unexpected struggles of his, or 3) don't even - both of them sucked. And while it was unfortunate that Bitten Heroes were only able to secure a single point, the solitary point coming from Ilya having the fastest lap on the sprint at 1:34.494, there's no doubt that a bit more evened-out set of results for the team could speak for consistent success in future-time.

WGP2 Challenger's Prix of Esmerel
Forest Cross International Raceway (West Circuit)

Situated in the vast forests of the Rainier Province, Forest Cross combines tricky, technical driving and lengthy straights, which together test both drivers and cars alike on every aspect of open wheel racing over the course of a lap, the longest in the WGPC. Having made safety-based and other improvements since its last race in 2018, the track has been only in preseason testing for both the past two seasons. The shorter West Circuit will be used for the World Grand Prix 2 Circuit.

Week 8: Practice
Conditions: Light Showers
Session Length: 75 minutes
Nation: ESM
Circuit: Forest Cross International Raceway (West Circuit)

Drivers have 75 minutes to complete as many laps of the track as they like

WGP2 S5
Round 8
WGP2 Challenger's Prix of Esmerel
Forest Cross International Raceway (West Circuit), Ventress, Esmerel
Post Race

"What about you? Who are you? Who is Batu Tüvshinbayar?" That question was still revolving around his head, despite the answer he gave that day. For Batu Tüvshinbayar, his season has been filled with plenty of highs and that night in Effelelendro would certainly count as one of them despite all the baggage he laid bare to his Fleftic pal over beers and tears. It certainly was a bit interesting, but reflection had to wait until this weekend was done - and that was to the benefit of his title hopes. Getting so many points one weekend to getting none the next was certainly a reminder of how fragile things can be in a season as tight as this. The 3-way battle that both he and SOC now found themselves in was very tight and needed some great pace and a bit of love to try and be in the best position possible heading into this season's run-in. Of course, he didn't expect to be in this position at all when he signed the dotted line to come to the Commonwealth of Baker Park to race for Scuderia Orange Cow, but they have been nothing short of impeccable so far as they've all pushed him towards where he was now. They deserved something, at least according to Batu at least, and he hoped to deliver across the final few races this season.

The West Circuit of Forest Cross in Esmerel would be used for this weekend and Batu knew he had to show the WGP2 world that he was committed to trying to do the unthinkable and claim the crown. Practice was all about data collection for this long and twisty venue in the light rain and Batu took full advantage of that to put down some good lap times. He managed to set the fastest lap of the day just about, with Athan Lille and Darian Vilau completing the Top 3, while his very-kind teammate Jordan Crowe was 5th and the 2 UrGa down in 9th and 10th, Sal ahead of Donny respectively. Qualifying on Saturday was actually dry and that certainly changed a few things towards the front as the true pace finally came out. The battle for pole was certainly tight and Batu was certainly trying his best but in the end, he was certainly happy with P3. Aaron Deering took pole over, of all people, Shalmaneser Kalhu...the guy Batu didn't get to meet over in Abanhfleft not that long ago. 10th to 13th were all people of Batu's interest with Crowe, Donny Fitzpatrick and Batu's two title rivals (Ryden Solow and Alvis Kalvin Lacsamana) qualifying in that order.

Sunday came and the 70 laps everyone would race produced only 1 retirement in the form of Chiruno Hakusoe on lap 12. There certainly were overtakes to be had and the pace was surely quick but in the end, Batu wasn't able to keep up with the Top 2 at all. Sal beat Deering to the flag by 8 seconds with Batu just about beating Lille to the podium in the end. Pande Putu Raka Ganesha, Bryce Yannec, Skiia Vialiv, Sullivan Joyner, Crowe and Kyidawa Sherpa made the Top 10 with neither AKL (12th) nor Solow (17th) managing any points at all. He made sure to both congratulate Sal and thank him in person for his gifts from a few weeks ago as the situation around him finally got to the Mongolian. Batu Tüvshinbayar was now the championship leader by 7 points. And SOC was also the leader by 9. Suddenly, everything became real for Orange Cow.

A doubleheader in Lisander is to come as now, SOC has to deal with the massive targets on their backs for the first time this season. Batu will try to be ready for all of that, but one thing was still on his mind: that question was still reverberating in his head, despite the answer he gave. Heather was very insistent on finding out everything about what happened in Effelenendro, constantly asking for info on everything that happened over in that bar and everything that was said. Consistent prodding was enough for Batu to just spill the beans soon enough...and what beans there were to spill.

Tambayanan was the name of the bar and out of nowhere, a band was announced and brought onto the stage. They were called Dive Bomb and Batu wasn't too much interested until he saw who was on drums: Adonis Fitzpatrick himself. The lead dedicated this first performance to "someone who's new to the place", possibly Batu himself, and managed to put together a great cover of a track he hadn't heard of before. His focus was mainly on Donny on the drums though, his composure and pure flow indicating this wasn't his first rodeo at all. Once it was finished, Donny excused himself from the stage and showed up to Batu's table with a couple of beers. He talked about this band, formed for a competition and decided to stick around for the fun of it, before mentioning Sal was tired after his feast at Lucky Baka, meaning that Batu and Donny were the army of 2 for tonight. He then went on to talk about his story, about how he got into racing through the finances and support of his aunt and the...perceived difficulties of his father. Batu sensed Donny's dad was a topic he didn't want to get into at this time and that was understandable, but then he asked Batu this question: Who is Batu Tüvshinbayar?

He wasn't sure how to approach the question at first but in the end, he decided he had to go all in. He started by saying that who he was "is a question I have yet to answer yet myself" before going in deep on his past. He talked about his home in Shinebaishin, the only place he really knew for his whole childhood. He talked about the ambition of his parents, particularly his mother, to bring glory to the Tüvshinbayar name...and the punishments he received for not meeting expectations. He talked about his trials in martial arts and the abuse he received both from competitors and behind the scenes as he just tried to get his life on track no matter the costs. He talked about how homeschooling and TV were the only things that he knew from outside the walls, how that was his only exposure to the concepts of "friendship" and "love". He talked about how TV got him into racing too and how karting became an escape that lead to him actually escaping - the NRDAS allowing him to finally leave the walls and try to make his own way, his mother constantly watching from afar and tracking his every success. He talked about the lows he felt at NN despite his two podiums, the feelings he felt like "outcast" and "unwanted" from both the co-owners and the one called Edvin. He talked about how painful that felt and how he felt as though he was nothing. Then he talked about the road back, the 3rd-place finish in the Burnam Bros Classic and that victory at The Rumble in The Rice Fields, how that feeling of doubt flew away in an instant. He talked about SOC, how he felt like family over there and how that helped him realise that opening up to people was achievable to "someone like me".

He cried a few times during all of that, the hand of Donny on Batu's shoulder at times (which felt warm and soothing, in his opinion), but in the end, he had to finish and this is how he did: "So there we are. That...is me. I'm 19, from Shinebaishin...and I'm not good at the whole social stuff. I don't truly know who I am, not even who I would want to fall in love with if that ever happened, but I am still...me. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for listening to my...struggles. I feel we are more in common than I first thought...wouldn't you agree?"

Batu felt that night went really well...so well in fact, that maybe we should make another visit to Tambayanan at another time. Donny was a great listener...and maybe, he will become a great friend as well...maybe even more, if it came to that. Batu didn't know how much he wanted to take things here...but the first step had been taken at that bar that night.

The Sherpa Empire wrote:Kyidawa hadn't planned to force Sam Blaatschapen into the pitlane. It just sort of happened. After the race he insisted in broken English that he had not done it on purpose and he was very sorry for messing up Sam's race. Some people might have thought his apology was flippant, but he actually did feel a little bad. It just wasn't his style to be too serious and earnest.

When he saw her again as they were arriving in Akresna, he smiled and waved and hoped she was not still mad. "How are you?" he asked.

"Just fine," she said with a laugh. Kyidawa was not aware that she had sore eyes. He noted that, and asked if she was getting better.

"You are lucky I am."

WGP2 Challenger's Prix of Esmerel
Post-Race

Louis Meissner by now had a decent idea of what was going on with Aaron Deering. He had been on fire lately. His excellent racing style, his ability to adapt, his abundance of confidence, and his constant stream of positivity were just some of the things he noticed on VSK's pick. It was as if Aaron seemed to be on the verge of something. It was a good sign.

Earlier...

"I think we have our driver now," Louis said. "Aaron is now in the pitlane. Do your best, everyone, go, go, go!"

Aaron gracefully swerved his car to the designated area, right where the wheel guns were aligned just right to his tires. The crew commenced the tire swap. The process was flawless, and off Aaron went.

"Now that's what I'm talking about!" Louis triumphantly called out.

Privately, he had a nitpick or two to point out, but he couldn't deny that everyone did their job. Aaron stayed on course for a podium, maybe a win. The power of listening to the various stakeholders during the debriefings was showing dividends to his delight.

And a podium he did get. A P2 plus Kyidawa's P10 and fastest lap propelled VSK-WU to fourth in the constructors' standings. The competition was far from over.

Grandeville was founded in 1643, between Mount Grand and Lake Grand, officially to be the winter residence of the Princes of Lisander, but also to consolidate the power of the central government over the local aristocracy, which was beginning attempts at uprising against the royal power. In order to pacify the aristocracies unhappy with what they called "abandonment", the crown began building a channel, which centuries later would come to be called the River Grand, to export agricultural produce from the north more cheaply than the previous shipping to towns like Despina and Pine Point by carriage. Currently, it's regarded as one of the biggest cities of the under-populated north. It was the second of the major regional centres to fully provide all of its citizens with the LSiD system.

For centuries and to this day, the west face of Mount Grand has been the most conducive to winter sports in the country, which are concentrated in the winter months between December and March. The "mountainous sector", also known as Grandeville Heights, which arose with the expansion of the city, is the only part of the country that has snow accumulation all winter. Just before winter, from mid to late autumn, the city's racetrack receives massive numbers of visitors, for the Grand Prix of Lisander, a race that had been becoming more and more famous, before being axed by the WGPC organisation, at the expense of the Hapilopper Grand Prix. In opposition to this, Lisander was guaranteed a race in WGP2.

Today, Grandeville has an estimated population of 97,000, most of whom work in the third sector, both domestically focused companies and those focused on foreign markets. Politically, it was for many decades a stronghold of conservative parliamentarians, but in the last fifty years, the openness policies of the monarchy and government have turned Grandeville into a cosmopolitan town where there is strong democratic alternation.

Grandeville's Palace of the Arminians, completed in 1633, was last renovated in 1906. Originally the winter residence of the monarchs, it was the official residence of the Prince of Termites (heir to the throne) on a few occasions. Today, part of it is a museum and it is only occasionally used as a dwelling by royalty. The Harmin of this generation, considered accessible and media-friendly monarchs, generally prefer the Manor of the Hawthorns, a small 19th-century rural palace on Grandeville Heights, as their occasional abode. Grandeville is a town full of theatres. It is unusual for such a "small" town to have so many theatres. There are a total of 14, an average of 1 for every 6700 people, which is high by national standards.

When it comes to Sports, Grandeville seems to have a predilection for sports involving "vehicles". In addition to the Circuit de Grandeville, Mount Grand's ice tracks host annual national championships in Bobsleigh, Luge and Skeleton. Lake Grand usually hosts small sailing events, and the Lisander Cycling Federation maintains a velodrome on the outskirts of the town, due to the climate of the location being the most appropriate for maintaining a state-of-the-art velodrome and its expensive pine track. Team sports such as Football and Basketball are also common, and in these, Sporting Grandeville is the strongest club in town. Originally a private club, it was converted into a municipal club in 1944, when its original sports structures were transformed into a recreational structure for the population, in exchange for its current stadium, the Andreas Rozan Olympic Stadium. Its colours, black, white and green, are also the colours of the city. It turned professional in the 1960s. The club is currently owned by the Harmin Group, the investment fund of the Lisander sovereign family.

Jordan Crowe surely didn't act like a young man who's seen his newer, younger teammate outperform him over the past few race meetings; how could you not be happy for a guy who has impressed the entire Orange Cow Organization with his work ethic, humility, genuineness, and desire to learn all the nuances and info he could from Jordan, Vaughn Estes, Sammi and Nick--he was inquisitive and like a sponge for technical detail.

JC had given some thought about how Batu compared to Pedro and Sakite, wondering if perhaps the young man from Shinebaishin was what you'd get if you combined last season's drivers, even going so far as to mention it to Estes, Sunil Choudhary, his own race engineer, and Paul Valentini on the flight back from Auruna (following the earlier conversation with Helena described above).

"Hmmm. Interesting idea." Sunil had been Saki's engineer, working with Crowe to provide her with tons of practical advice and little tip & tricks that someone who'd never sat in a race car until she arrived in Haskins after signing her contract would need.
"Saki's greatest strength was her capacity for taking our feedback and applying it rightnow while Pedro was the one you wanted in a situation where feedback from the driver about the setup was necessary. In the rounds where Batu has not looked quick in practice because he was doing race sim, he's generally picked it up on race day--Hessington, Aji No Moto--and of course he's always trying to match your pace. In some ways, yeah, that's a valid hypothesis."
Estes and Valentini weighed in with their own perspectives and JC felt better about his judgement when it was finished.

That they could have such a discussion in the open was because of course Batu was on his way to Abanhfleft for his "boys night" with Donny Fitzpatrick. Jordan knew his teammate craved acceptance and friendship. but had been so socially stunted as a youth that he was a bit awkward--which he, Carter and Unger had pre-empted by almost forcibly including him in things you'd expect three people involved in a similar pastime/profession in which they all had shared experienced would undertake on benign social levels.
The mechanics also gave the TJUN-ian a place in their bizarre, closed society of 'gearheads', as he was recipient of all the little practical jokes that the other drivers had undergone at some point in the past, as well as being initiated into the equally strange nickname universe that set them apart from the techies, the other supervisory types (Sunil, Estes, the top directors, the PR/merchandise folks, even Helena and Smitty) and the rest of the staff at the PRL.

Crowe didn't need anyone within Scuderia Orange Cow to tell what was expected of him for the final events--a feature/sprint doubleheader in Lisander and the final weekend in Vilita. Win outright to deny the other contenders full points, or work to protect Batu if they both were in point scoring positions. Over two seasons this team had always done right by him, and if he couldn't bring them a championship himself, the least he could do was to help his fellow driver do it.

Adonis Fitzpatrick hadn’t expected to get a serious answer when he had asked Batu Tüvshinbayar who he was. He thought that it was just going to be an icebreaker, something to get the conversation going. Well, it did get a conversation going, all right. Donny didn’t expect Batu to get into all that detail about his own personal life, along with all the trials and tribulations that he had to go through just to even make it to the WGP2 level of racing, but he was now getting all that and more. And Batu did take Donny up on his offer to be the Mongolian’s crying shoulder as well, and Donny would soon spend the night comforting Batu while the latter talked about the weight of expectations that he had on his shoulders just because of his name and such.

Donny didn't even know where to begin unpacking everything that Batu had told him. Finally, he decided to start somewhere where he felt the two of them had something in common. The two of them had gotten into racing by way of television, with Donny seeing the Abanhfleft Racing Truck Series and Batu with NRDAS, whatever that was. And then Batu had gotten to the part where he talked about his family's (more specifically, his mother's) desire to see him succeed as a way of bringing glory to his family's name. He talked about all the things he tried (and failed) to do good in, and of the consequences of his failures. And Donny thought that he had it rough when his father was dunking his head in water for wearing women's clothes. Then again, Donny being almost drowned by his own father had nothing to do with whether he won a race or not. Batu's punishments had everything to do with his, well, failures to do anything of note with the other things before he finally found success in racing.

"Now, obviously I don't know anything at all about what's going on with your personal life, so I don't want to presume anything," Donny said. "But there's just something in me that can't help but feel that what's happening to you can't be healthy in the long run. I mean, I thought my relationship with my father was strange enough as it is! Like I said, I don't want to presume anything, but I'm just saying that from an outsider's perspective, it's not a good look for either you or your mom. And it's all happening behind the scenes as well. Like, I don't even have words. At least I didn't have to go through all that with my mother. Then again, I never really got to know my mother. She died when I was 4. She died in a plane crash. She was going to visit her family in Sebet because her grandmother, my great-grandmother, was sick, and she wanted to see her one more time before the, well, you know. But everything that was prepared for my great-grandmother ended up being used for my mother instead. And now I'll never know what my life could have been if she was still around, if my father would have treated me the way he did if my mother was there to stop him."

Batu also said something about being homeschooled, and that because of this he never got the opportunity to socialize and make friends with others of his age or near it, and that most of his knowledge about things like "friendship" and "love" were only gleaned from television. Now this was something that Donny couldn't really relate to because he had what could be considered a "normal" childhood, as normal as such a thing could have been without his mother there at all and with the abuse that his father handed out to him because of his burgeoning homosexuality. Donny also had a "normal" education even though his father could only afford to send him to a public school, and by the time he went to the University of Santa Magdalena, Urotovsky-Gatutin were taking care of his tuition fees for him. But Donny felt that he could give some advice to the young TJUN-ian. "Real life is much, much more complicated than what they show on TV, Batu," he said. "What I'm saying is, if most of what you know of the world outside of your house is stuff that you learned from TV then prepared to be disappointed. Life, fate, circumstance, whatever you wanna call it, is often not fair to you at all. Sometimes you'll get something good like winning that race that you won—sorry if I've forgotten which one it is already—but more often than not, you have to just sit on the sidelines and watch as someone else gets that thing that you really wanted. Is this sort of thinking pessimistic? Probably, yes. But is it better to be pleasantly surprised sometimes rather than be disappointed constantly? For me, it's a yes, but don't take my word for it. You're your own person and free to believe whatever you want."

"And here's another piece of advice for you, by the way," Donny added. "Out here in the real world, there are going to be a lot of people who are going to try to influence you into doing what they want for you instead of what you want for yourself. And since you haven't been exposed to the real world much, you're going to be especially susceptible and vulnerable to those people. Nothing good ever comes easy. If something feels like it's too good to be true then it probably is. Believe me, man, I know that shit. I've been burned enough times to know how that feels. I mean, you can even apply that advice to me right now! You can choose to listen to what I'm saying or you can choose to ignore it altogether. You're your own person, Batu! You don't have to let anyone tell you what to do, how you should be or even what you want. Nobody has all the answers to all the questions in this world, least of all me. But what you can do is find the answer for yourself."

"And one more thing," Donny added. "Now that you're famous and out here in the real world, you're gonna get a lot of people who are going to come to you and say that they want to be your friends. You gotta be extra careful around those people because most of the time, when you're famous, people only want to be your friend because you're famous. They want your fame and fortune to rub off on them, and they'll also begin asking you for favors that start off small but then those favors and requests will grow bigger and bigger and before you know it, you're now deeply in debt with these so-called friends. But there are those who really want to be your friends, and you'll know who they are once you start going through a rough patch in your career or your life or wherever. Your real friends are the ones who'll stick with you through thick and thin. And once you've found those real friends, you gotta treasure them and cherish them because they are exceptionally rare. If there's one thing that I hope you'll remember from me tonight, I hope that this is it."

Batu would finally answer Donny's question at the end of the former's long, long backstory, and what he said was, "So there we are. That… is me. I'm 19, from Shinebaishin… and I'm not good at the whole social stuff. I don't truly know who I am, not even who I would want to fall in love with if that ever happened, but I am still… me. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for listening to my… struggles. I feel we are more in common than I first thought… wouldn't you agree?"

"No need to thank me," Donny said. "I'm just a guy trying to help out somebody who looks like he needs it. And you're right, we do have more in common than we both thought. We're both just two guys still trying to find out who we are, what we're supposed to do, and why we're here in the first place. There's no harm in admitting that you're still trying to get a handle on who you are because it means that you're still growing and learning and willing to know even more. And I do hope that you remember what I told you tonight about the real world. I really think that there's greatness in you, Batu, but like I said, I think you have to find yourself first before you can unlock that greatness. And if you need anything else from me, well, you know where to find me."

Oh, how quickly the tables could turn, Adonis Fitzpatrick thought to himself as he saw blue flags being waved in front of him. Or, more accurately, they were being waved at him. When previously he was the one lapping his teammate Shalmaneser Kalhu, now he was the one getting lapped by Sal. It had been a long time since WGP2 had seen this side of Sal Kalhu, and in the back of his mind he thought that this had everything to do with the dinner that he and Sal and their respective crews had had in Effelenendro the week before.

It was Sal's idea to treat the guys to dinner, but it was Donny who had suggested that they eat at Lovely Baka, the Korean barbecue restaurant owned by Donny's brothers-in-law that was also his first ever racing sponsor. The dinner had been a chance for everyone to relax and let their hair down, so to speak, and not have to think about the pressures of the season for just one night. The dinner was probably just the thing that Sal needed to get out of his slump because once Sal got behind the wheel of his GP2-5-3, he appeared nigh-unstoppable on track. Sal was behind only Aaron Deering in qualifying, and by the end of the race Sal was now leading everyone else and was even in the process of lapping his own teammate.

"Sal is coming up behind you," Donny's engineer Vladimir Gennadiyevich Kripchak told him. "He is going to lap you so don't hold him up. He is not our race."

"Copy that," Donny said as he tried to find a place where Sal could lap him without losing too much momentum on his part. Donny would let Sal pass him in Turn 13, the Eon Approach. "Go get them, tiger," Donny said as car number 53 went past him and continued down the Grant Ridge Tunnel straight.

The relief that the entirety of the Urotovsky-Gatutin Motorsports Division felt once Sal Kalhu crossed the finish line and claimed his first official victory of the season was immense, to say the least. Sal had not been doing very well in the previous races so to see him win this race in Esmerel was truly blessed relief, not just for him but also everyone else in his team as well. Relief was also visible on the face of Vasily Gatutin when Sal crossed the line in first place. Sal's victory was the proof he needed not only for the board of directors but also for himself that he had made the right choice in signing the young Adabian. Suddenly, that win in Yakumicha early in the season that didn't count didn't seem all that important anymore. UrGa had now proven that they had a package capable of winning races, and two drivers capable of taking that package to the top step of the podium.

"Looks like all that beef you ate last week was just the thing you needed to add weight and downforce to your car, Sal," Donny said to the Adabian as a joke. "But seriously man, congrats on this win. You of all people really deserved this one, especially after that awesome performance in Yakumicha. In fact, you should already have two wins under your belt now, not just this one. But no one's going to be able to take this one away from you now, so enjoy it for as long as you can! Hey, here's an idea? How about I treat the whole team to dinner in Adab? You pick the place and I'll pay the bill. It's just fair after that dinner at Lovely Baka last week. So what do you say?"

But even as he was making plans to visit Adab, Donny was already thinking one week ahead towards Lisander. It was going to be another race weekend with a sprint race, meaning that there were actually two races in Lisander rather than just one. That, combined with the final race of the season, meant that both Donny and UrGa had three bites of the cherry left to build upon Sal's success in Esmerel. UrGa had proved that their car was capable of getting onto the podium. The next task for them now was to put both cars on the podium at the same time. It was a difficult task, but deep inside, Donny Fitzpatrick believed that such a thing could still be possible.

Exclusive Interview with Raka Ganesha

Lisander - The World Grand Prix 2 Season 5 have come to its 9th race. And it will be held in Lisander. At the moment, it is an honor for us to be able to get an exclusive interview with Pemecutanian driver that compete under Gajamina Racing Team. Pande Putu Raka Ganesha, is not a new name in domestic racing community. And his debut in international stage have become a hot topic in his home country. So it is a fortunate that we can get closer with the racer. I'm Nindya Apsari and this is our exclusive interview.
Good afternoon, Ganesh. And welcome.
Afternoon. Thanks. It's good to be here.

It's great to having you here. So how do you do?
Great. The race is nice. Quite an experience.

Can you share with us? With your fans back home?
How do you feel?
First experience in the world stage is amazing. Getting to know new people from all around the world. Seeing many places.
That's great. For the race, I feel a little intimidated.

How's so?
Not in a negative way tho. It's just that I'm new in this stage. I need a lot of adjustment.
Especially with the custom, the weather and the situation in every country that I have to visit during the race.
It is a good experience and it force me to adapt fast with the condition. Something that makes me sometimes overwhelm.

Is that why your results were kind of random?
One of the reason, yes. But there are many factors that affected me during the race.
Besides adapting with the condition. Also the weather. Circuit familiarity. And of course the car.

And how do you feel after the first top 5?
Happy. Hahaha. I can't express myself at the time. It was a great moment. Even though I'm not in the podium
but I'm still happy with the result.

And then something happened in the next race.
Yeah. Engine failure makes me have to out from the race. It was a disappointing moment. Nikhil also got similar issue.

But both of you were started in last positions that time.
Yeah. The circuit was not very suitable to the car. We get it harder to drive and the situation worsen during the race.
Nikhil was crash early while I'm still able to race. But the failure makes me stop.

What happen exactly that time?
There were several things happened that time. But the focus was on the steering wheel.
There was a leakage in my car at the time which was worsen each lap
I can't even make the turn.
While in Nikhil's car was about the power steering pump. He can't make turn and just drive straight ahead into the bumper.
But the team solved it immediately and we can get into race in the next schedule.
Tho the performance of the car was still not 100% after the failure.

And it bounce back in the 6th race. Pole position and another points.
Yeah. That was insane. I'm shocked for the pole position. I'm checking a couple of times to make sure of my result.

But the race result was quite a disappointment?
I believe so. I hope that I can keep my position so I can get into the podium. But things not always come that way.
I make a few mistakes that makes my position dropped. But at least I'm still save some points.

Always look at the good things from the bad.
True. Disappointed? Of course. I'm not denied that. But I realized my mistakes fast and finished the race above the line.

That's great for you. And for the next race in Lisander? What do you expected?
Another point. Hahaha. I'm very happy with my last result in Esmerel. I'm just hope at least I can replicate the result.

Good luck for you. And what do you think about the domestic race?
I heard the news and they are expanding which is a good thing for them.
The street circuit idea is awesome tho. I look forward about that. It would be very interesting.

We are all looking forward for that too. And I'm thanking you for this interview.
It is a great opportunity for us to catch up with you.
The pleasure is mine. I'm also feeling greatfull for this interview
and hoping that this will encouraging more young people to look for this sport. Maybe as a fan maybe as the next racer.

Hopefullt. Once again thank you and good luck for your next race.
Thanks to you too and all of my fans who always supported me. Thank you.

“Are these the gifts that Mr. al-Taghlabi and Miss Kaykali have said they were sending to us?” Vasily Semyonovich Gatutin asked the two crewmen wearing the distinctive red-green-red uniforms of the Urotovsky-Gatutin Motorsports Division while they were bringing in some cardboard boxes on dollies.

“Yes, sir,” one of the crewmen nodded. “There, that should be all of it. They’ve all been through the X-ray machine, sir. They’re clear.”

“Then let’s not waste any time, shall we? Let’s open them up,” Gatutin ordered. The other crewman took out a box cutter and used it to cut away the tape sealing the boxes. He worked on the flat big box on top of the others first, and once he had cut the tape, he opened it up to reveal a painting of Shalmaneser Kalhu sitting inside an UrGa GP2-5-3. The number 53 on the nose and sides of the car, and the helmet peeking out of the HALO, indicated that it was indeed Sal and his car.

“Oh, that’s actually beautiful,” Marina Vladislavovna Smirnitskaya, the chief public relations of Urotovsky-Gatutin, said as she saw the painting for the first time. “ I must admit, I had high expectations when Miss Kaykali said that Mr. al-Taghlabi said that he had commissioned a painting for Sal and his car, but this is just blowing me away!”

“Certainly you weren’t expecting to see something like a watercolor painting, were you, Marina Vladislavovna?” Yakov Leonidovich Yurievsky, “financial advisor” to UrGa, said as he gazed upon the painting. “Because here I was just starting to think that you were a woman of exquisite taste.”

“Oh, shut up, Yakov Leonidovich!” Smirnitskaya snapped at him. “Oh, now I have another problem,” she muttered.

“What is it?” Gatutin asked her.

“I don’t know where we’re supposed to put this!” Smirnitskaya replied. “But where are we going to put this so everyone can see it? This painting doesn’t deserve to be just hung on the wall of an office; people need to see this!”

“I’m sure that there’s a spot in the lobby where we could put this painting,” Gatutin muttered. “Right, what’s in the other boxes again?”

The crewmen set to work opening up the second box, and once they had ripped off the tape and dug through the packing peanuts, they took out a finely crafted balalaika. “Ah, yes,” Gatutin nodded as he took the instrument from the crewman. “I believe this one is for you,” he said as he handed the balalaika to the other man with him.

“Oh, thank you, sir,” said Konstantin Zakharovich Rezansov, chief engineer of UrGa as he accepted the balalaika. “But I should warn you now, Vasily Semyonovich, that when I said that I was good with a balalaika, I was actually talking about the MiG-21, not the instrument!”

“I’m sure you’ll find the time to learn to play,” Gatutin waved off while he watched the crewmen dig deeper into the box. “Here are the porcelain dishes, sir,” the crewman said as he and his friend brought out the dishes and set them on a table. By the time they were finished sorting the dishes, they saw that they had enough to restock the factory’s cafeteria, and then some. “Now that’s a lot of plates,” one of the crewmen muttered.

“Well, my wife has been bugging me to get some new china to replace the ones we have,” Gatutin said.

“Don’t tell me you’re going to take all of the dishes, Vasily Semyonovich!” Marina Smirnitskaya cried out.

“Of course not, Marina Vladislavovna!” Gatutin said. “Most of these will be for the factory cafeteria, of course. As for the spillover, I was thinking that I was going to get some dishes, and leave the rest for all of you to divide as you please. There should be enough left over for all of you, da?”

“How generous of you, Vasily Semyonovich,” Yakov Yurievsky said with just a hint of sarcasm.

“And finally, last but not least, we have the vinyl,” the crewman said, extracting the final item from the box and handing it to Gatutin, who immediately passed it on to Rezansov again. “Mr. al-Taghlabi said that he recommends this for listening when you and the lads are working late into the night,” Gatutin said. “Be careful with that; it’s from his late mother. You wouldn’t want to break it, would you, Kostya?”

“Of course not, Vasya,” Rezansov shook his head. “Although I must say that I think I already have the song in my playlist.”

“Really? I don’t remember hearing you saying anything about it.”

“Come on, Vasya!” Rezansov said. “You seriously haven’t heard me singing in the factory before? Like a surgeon, cutting for the very first time… Like a surgeon, organ transplants are my line! You haven’t heard that before?”

“Somehow, I have a feeling that the song in your head and the one on that vinyl are not exactly one and the same,” Gatutin said. “Anyway, I think we will have to repay Mr. al-Taghlabi’s faith in us. We can’t just take these gifts and run away, obviously. We need to give something back to them to show our appreciation for their gifts. But what? What do we give to Mr. al-Taghlabi?”

“I mean, we could always give him a poster of both Adonis and Shalmaneser with their respective cars,” Yakov Yurievsky said.

“Don’t be so cheap, Yakov Leonidovich,” Kostya Rezansov muttered. “How about a scale model of the GP2-5-3?”

“That’s not really practical though, is it?” Marina Smirnitskaya added. “If we’re going to give him something, we might as well give him something that he can actually use? Why not a Byzant? Straight from the factory in the Fhulghamous. Certainly a luxury sedan is more practical and useful to him than a scale model of a WGP2 car?”

“Can I make a suggestion, sirs?” one of the crewmen who had brought in the boxes from Adab asked. “What if we gave them something that they will know is definitely from our country? Something like a Kalashnikov rifle or a bottle of vodka?”

“Don’t be stupid, Ilya Yevgeniyevich,” the other crewman said. “The Adabians are Muslims! That means they don’t drink vodka and such! That’s why the Viking princes who founded the old Tsardom rejected Islam for Orthodoxy: they don’t want to give up their alcohol!”

“Are you calling me stupid, Afanasiy Danilovich?”

“That’s enough!” Gatutin shouted in order to restore order. “We’ll come up with something to give back to Mr. al-Taghlabi as thanks for these,” he said, gesturing at the gifts that they had received. “You’ve all given me valid reasons why we should give them the things you’ve suggested, but it is now up to me to make sure that it all actually makes sense. All right then. We’ve got some work to do.”

SUBJECT: A Thank You of Our Own

Dear Miss Kaykali, I hope this email finds you well.

We have received the gifts that Mr. Mustafa al-Taghlabi has sent to us, and on behalf of Mr. Gatutin and the rest of the staff of Urotovsky-Gatutin Motorsports Division, we give to you our thanks.

Now, Mr. Gatutin has decided that such generosity on the part of Mr. al-Taghlabi must be repaid, and so we have put together the following items as a gift to show our appreciation to you and your organization. The following items are:

  • A poster featuring both Shalmaneser Kalhu and Adonis Fitzpatrick posing beside their UrGa GP2-5-3 cars
  • A 1:12 scale model of the UrGa GP2-5-3 complete with acrylic display case
  • A brand new Luxur Byzant luxury sedan fresh from our factory in the Fhulghamous Peninsula (painted in black but the color can be changed if you so desire)
  • A brand new Yarygin MP-443 Grach pistol fresh from the factory floor of the Lesonetsk Machine Building Enterprise
  • A gold-plated Kalashnikov AK-12 assault rifle, also from Lesonetsk (but unlike the Yarygin, the Kalashnikov is only meant for display)
  • A vinyl record of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, with the cannon section provided by the 992nd Artillery Regiment of the 16th Guards Frivolovskaya Combined Arms Division
  • A compact disk containing a small selection of popular songs in Pridnestrovia

Please get in touch with the government agency or ministry responsible for the importation of arms due to the nature of some of our gifts to Mr. al-Taghlabi. Me and some of my staff will go to Adab to accompany our gifts and clear them through customs if needed.

We also look forward to building and maintaining a good relationship with your management team and to fostering good bilateral relations between our two nations.

Sincerely yours,
Marina Vladislavovna Smirnitskaya

Chapter 13: The Win

WGP2 Season 5
WGP2 Challenger’s Prix of Esmerel ( Race 8 )
Forest Cross International Raceway (West Circuit), Esmerel

Sunday

Lap 68

Qualifying in second place was definitely not on Sal’s list of expectations for this weekend. A part of him felt he just couldn’t get enough out of the car; another part – haunting him, nagging at him – felt he just wasn’t good enough. Yet it had happened; he qualified for the race in second place, behind only Aaron Deering. That night out with Donny and the team must have lifted something off his shoulders; he felt freer and more comfortable now. Fortune was on his side.

If he could keep up the pace and manage the race well, then Deering would be his only obstacle to victory. Victory. But even managing to make it onto the podium would be a great result for Sal, especially after the “meh” results of the last few races. Now came the race, and time for Sal to prove that, maybe, maybe he was no fluke at all.

And what a race it was. Sal and Aaron led the pack, and after a few laps they were starting to pull away from the rest. Batu Tüvshinbayar, whom Donny had met that night and Sal would have met if not for his feeling tired, was running in third. As they sped through the twists and turns of Forest Cross, Illarion made sure to keep Sal updated on everything that was going on. Skiia Vialiv, climbing from 14th, breached the top ten, but although Vialiv’s pace had Sal worried at the beginning Illarion quickly assured him that Vialiv was too far away.

Too far away from Sal, anyway. Donny started the race in 11th, but as the race went on found himself falling to 14th and by the end of the race would be a lap down. Indeed, still comfortably in second, Sal found himself passing Donny at Turn 13 on lap 65. As he did so he made sure to give a thumbs-up to his lapped teammate, though he wasn’t sure if Donny actually saw it.

“Tell Donny I’m gonna do this for the team,” Sal told Illarion over the radio, calm and confident as he and the car disappeared down the Grant Ridge Tunnel. “There will be an UrGa driver on the podium today.”

By lap 68, Athan Lille, starting in seventh, was climbing to fourth at the expense of Pande Putu Raka Ganesha, Bryce Yannec, and most dramatically Vaccinia Poxvirus. Poxvirus qualified fourth but was having a shocker of a race, gradually dropping down until she was out of the top ten. “Lille is having quite a good race. Do you think he can catch us?” Sal called into the radio.

“Don’t worry about it,” Illarion answered back. “Batu is holding Lille back. It’s close between them but Batu will not yield. It’s you and Deering’s race now.”

It really was. With some distance separating him from Batu, Sal emerged out of the tunnel in hot pursuit of Aaron. He could see the back of his car almost the entire race, sometimes distant, sometimes so close. So close, yet just far enough to slip away whenever Sal was dangerously close. This man knew the circuit. He sure appeared comfortable there.

But Sal was pushing. Pushing, pushing…

Lap 69

…and as they crossed the line to begin the 69th lap he was closing the gap. Aaron slowed down as he negotiated Turn 1. It was a good, clean move… and it was just a little too slow. Sal followed closely, braking and pushing the steering wheel hard right just as it seemed he was on the verge of running into the wall.

“Tires, Sal, tires,” Illarion gently reminded him. Sure they had switched to hards, but Sal was pushing them to the limit. Worried as they were about the tires, no one in the garage was surprised. Sal didn’t just want to get onto the podium. He wanted to win. And this time actually gain points from it.

“I got this,” Sal said, finding his left front wheel nearly touching Aaron’s right rear wheel as they negotiated Turns 2 and 3. Aaron managed to summon some pace and get away somewhat at Turn 4, only for Sal to find him again at the sharp turn on Turn 5. Aaron had been slightly to his left, but now he swerved right as they ran down the straight towards Turn 7. Finding his path to the front blocked, Sal backed off. For now.

And he remained in that position for some times, stalking Aaron as they went past the so-called Pin of Bravery, then down Turns 9 and 10. But Sal knew his moment would come; Aaron was just not pulling away. He was fast, but the gap was not increasing. He was quick, but Sal was pushing his car to the absolute limit. He needed this.

Emerging out of Turn 10, with Aaron still blocking the path to the right, Sal moved to the left, finding himself almost wheel-to-wheel with him, almost touching as they proceeded with blinding speed to Turn 11. There they slowed a little, Aaron just a little more than Sal… who sped down the straight leaving Aaron behind!

“Yes!” Illarion shouted. “That’s it, Sal, that’s it.”

“Yes!” Sal shouted back, putting more emotion into that word than he had showed during the entire race. “Man, Aaron is tough. I can’t believe I actually made it past him.”

The rest of the race passed like a blur for Sal. Aaron came close at Turn 13 but did not – and maybe was unable to - capitalize on it as they entered the closed space of the tunnel. As they crossed the line for the final lap, Sal was increasing his gap from Aaron, both of them already well ahead of Batu and the rest. All he needed to do now was stay in control and the race would be his.

Aaron gave it all but Sal was never again in danger. When all was said and done, he was eight seconds ahead of his closest opponent, with Batu taking the final spot on the podium. Athan rapidly approached Batu as the finish line came into sight but in the end couldn’t get past him.

Sal Kalhu was finally a race winner again. And this time, he would actually get points for his efforts. 25 of them, in fact.

At the podium ceremony he put his arms around Aaron and Batu, taking in the sight of the UrGa crew celebrating his win – and the fact that he was finally back up here. “Man,” he said, turning to Aaron, then to Batu, “y’all are great drivers. You deserve this. We deserve this.”

After a strong practice in which Bryce was below two tenths off the leader, Batu Tüvshinbayar, Bryce had, with the aid of a WGP2 Motorworks car that had finally rattled itself into gear, pushed himself into the third row of the track after qualifying. Spirits were high in the WGP2 Motorworks camp, as Bryce's teammate, Vaccinia Poxvirus, had rocketed up to 4th in the qualifying session, with both drivers nailing the tricky corners that were posed around the Pin of Bravery. Some particularly angsty journalists questioned whether the slower pace of the cars was the reason that the WGP2 Motorworks drivers excelled at the more technical section of the track, but the points that Bryce had pulled in seemed to stop them from asking further questions, at least in relation to his own skill.

The Race at Esmerel, titled the 'Challenger's Prix', was certainly that for Bryce. His race got off to a good start, with a calculated run towards the welcome mat that saw him avoid most of the battle for first between the front-runners, but settling him and Vaccinia firmly in 5th and 4th respectively for the first few laps as the field began to widen slightly.

Word across the radio was that some of the drivers were struggling with the heavy braking zones that this track had to offer, but Bryce was doing alright. Partially because the longer time to get up to top speed meant he had a bit more time to react, and he was able to trade some places with Vaccinia after team orders to race freely had come through the radio. The team, knowing that the two were fairly entrenched in their positions at this point in the race, knew that the two were the type to race cleanly and not jeopardise each other's status in the race. Vaccinia was signalled to be the first to pit for the first of the team's four total stops, and she went in without a problem, but came out with one, as an attack-hungry Athan Lille had come up and sped past her while she was in the pit lane. Bryce feared that Lille would be on him by the time he had pitted himself, and so the team were tactical about their first stop for Bryce, sending him in not one but two laps after Vaccinia, to hopefully stagger the opponents a bit and seem less predictable. It seemed to work, as Lille flinched first and wasn't quick enough to undercut, allowing Bryce to go hard on a lap and wear out the tyres as he was coming in for new ones.

Bryce continued to hold his race together quite well, but he hadn't anticipated another free radical to enter the mix - Pande Putu Raka Ganesha. The three, Yannec, Lille, and Ganesha, entered a tense three-way battle towards the middle of the race, with each vying for position and juggling the 4ht place spot between them. Bryce held on to 5th for a long while, being pipped to the post by Lille at first, but unfortunately failed to continue the long defence against Ganesha before their second stop. Bryce expressed his wish to go in at the same time as Ganesha to hopefully keep the gap close enough to overtake, and while the team obliged, Gajamina's slightly faster pit crew enabled Yannec to lose a second or two on the exchange, trailing as he emerged after his second stop.

In the final laps of the race, Bryce was comfortable in 6th place, with a solid cushion of 20-ish seconds between him and the 6th place battle going on between the Fireline of Sullivan Joyner and the Tropicorp VilBev of Skiia Vialiv. While he was a few seconds off of Ganesha, he still put the pedal to the metal, and nearly lost it clipping the skirting around Talvela, sending sparks flying about the track. Jerking the wheel side to side, he luckily managed to keep the car on track and hit the accelerator to speed through Turn 11, preventing the car from wobbling about too much. Braking just past the speed trap, he turned his concentration up to 11 to see the car through the last few laps, and roll past the chequered flag in P6, scoring eight vital points for the WGP2 Motorworks team, and more importantly, for his personal career in the drivers standings. His position there was now looking a bit more like his early season race finishes. Hopefully, in these final races of the season, his points would skyrocket just like his performance.

WGP2 Challenger's Prix of Esmerel, Forest Cross International Raceway (West Circuit), Vertress, Esmerel :: After sneaking into the points with a tenth place finish at the Race of the Hills in Auruna, Skiia Vialiv and the Tropicorp VilBev GP2 team made their way to New Hyperion where the Challengers Prix of Esmerel would be completed on the West Circuit of the famous Forest Cross International Raceway. Things did not get off to a great start, however, as both Vialiv and teammate Ryden Solow of Beepee qualified outside the Top 10 and would have their work cut out for them on race day.

Unfortunately Solow would have to make an extra pitstop during the race after contact on track required a replacement nose on the #69 Beepee Independent Grocers Tropicorp Chassis. Vialiv, however, would put in a strong performance considering where she had started the race, improving 7 positions to cross the line in 7th place and earn 6 points for both herself and the team. The Top eight positions in Esmerel were each occupied by a driver of a different team with Scuderia Orange Cow driver Jordan Crowe in 9th and Kyidawa Sherpa in 10th for Viska White Unicorns being the only drivers to join their teammates in the points.

The points earned at Forest Cross allowed Vialiv to move above Nexus Racing teammates Edward Rousseau and Haru Jukkenna in the Driver's standings and up into the 8th position. Critically, however, they helped the Tropicorp VilBev GP2 team keep a respectable total in the Constructors Standings where they trailed Scuderia Orange Cow by 9 points following a podium finish from Batu Tüvshinbayar. The circuit will now move on to the double header in Lisander at the Circuit de Grandeville, a well balanced circuit that should easily mesh with Vialiv's driving style and a circuit she could conceivably expect to compete for a podium at if her Tropicorp VilBev GP2 crew can get her car prepared well for the challenge of Mount Grand.

SUBJECT: The off-season
Sorry it took too long to respond to you.

Wherever Viska wants me to be, I'd gladly accept. I'd be happy to be given whatever you choose as to what discipline I'll be driving in. The only thing I know is open-wheel. But, if it helps me improve, I'd sign up for whatever, really.

My associates will also receive this email, and I expect them to support me wherever I put my efforts into it.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Aaron Deering

-----------------

"I guess your father found a way to get my number, too," Jamie said, showing her latest call log in her phone to Aaron, which he looked at and went to face Jamie.

"He sends his congratulations," Jamie continued, "again." Aaron returned to watching the television.

"Aaron, ever since your mother got my number, your father has been asking about you. How you're dealing with everything, when you win points and places in podiums, and even in Aji No Moto."

Still no response from him. Jamie then sat beside Aaron and stroked his face. "Just talk to your father. He cares about you."

Aaron waved Jamie's hand. "Someone might see us," is what she can hear from him.

"I still believe smoke detectors have hidden CCTVs," pointing at the closest smoke detector he can see in the ceiling, "just like in that hotel in Saymacrell."

Jamie shook her head, laughed, and stood up. "You have an interview with SportsCenter in about 3 hours. The questions are in the table. After the interview, we proceed to the Christianson Center for your watch promotions," before going straight to the door.

-----------------

"Take away the races in The Licentian Isles and Aji No Moto; you've been quite consistent in WGP2, getting those points. Surely, your team likes it that you get to take home points after every race." Raquel Lamanilao-Gonzales, the host of SportsCenter in United Adaikes, asks Aaron.

"I am very grateful to my team, guiding me every second of every race. I wouldn't be where I am today without the team," Aaron replied.

"Your performances in WGP2 struck a rise in the following of open-wheel racing here in the country. What do you want to say to those who want to live the dream of driving in international open-wheel?"

"It started as a dream first. All I did was show my skills. Though I have to admit about the financial capabilities of my family, a team believed in my skills, took me in, and look at where I am now. It's all about how you can walk the talk and be consistent about it."

"You are currently fourth in the Drivers' Standings, same with your team. If results go your way in the last three races - all wins, at least - you can win your first title. What are your thoughts on that, Aaron?"

"Wow, Raquel, you said it the same way how Tomaš said it in the last team meeting," Aaron laughed, "As I told everyone, we'll plan and take it one race at a time. At this stage, anything can happen. Of course, everyone wants to have a taste of the title. But it will be seen who wants it more when everyone will be in the race track."

"With the season nearing its culmination, what are your plans in the off-season?"

"Still haven't thought about it, actually. But there's still plenty to do for me."

"At the end of this season, you will be surely regarded as one of the rising stars in open-wheel racing. Will it still be WGP2, or do you find yourself driving already in WGPC in the next season?"

"I have talked already with a few people about this. Well, the dream is really to drive in WGPC. And to sum all the people I've asked, they're still divided on where I should go. But personally, as long as I can continue to drive and show my skills, I have no problems where I would be driving."

MaxxFuels WGP2 Race of Lisander
Circuito de Grandeville

The Circuito de Grandeville complex has recently gone under big modifications, the most notable is the new pitlane, that is now on the inside of the track, in order to provide safe reentry to the drivers. Other modifications were the transformation of Reta Oposta in a proper straight, that now ends in a hairpin, that runs around the circuit heliport. The circuit is around near 500 meter longer with the new hairpin and the modifications on turns. Last but not least, the final curve that was deemed too irregular is now more rounded.

As always, Circuito de Grandeville goes counter-clockwise. The Start/Finish point was moved in the Grandstands straight far from Bridge curve, and now cars have more space to break and reentry after pits. After bridge, a gentle turn left slight slope towards "Sete", that despite this name, is the third, very closed curve. The sandtrap was removed at the end of the following curve, being unacceptable at this time and age. The Rechristened turn four pushes people for an almost unnoticed climb before the biggest slope in the circuit, the Reta Oposta, that marks the end of Sector 1. A long straight before a close U-turn in the brand new Heliport Hairpin and then the climb starts again. Turns 7, 8 (Treason) and 9 (Quina) are getting tighter little by little, and then the Variante Reversa chicane ends the sequence of curves. After the Reversa, drivers are free to put their feet on gas again, giving some good throttle in the Parabolica for the people in the cheaper stands. Finally, Dive brings cars faster to Grandstands, but not too fast, because the final curve is now more rounded, and can be generously navigated, One for another, the time that would be gained by making "Reta" really a straight is lost on the slightly tighter corners and Hairpin. All in all, the Grandeville Circuit is about seven seconds slower than before.

Grandeville in Autumn is a pretty good city. The weather is mild and there is a slight chance of rain in the evening, however rain tyres are unlikely to be used with the race starting around 2pm. The city itself and its neighbour cities are in the low season, as winter tourism doesn't start until mid-December, and so hotels and restaurants should be low capacity. Surely there won't be any accommodation problems.

Last but not least, Lisander has adopted a completely digital identification/banking/public services system, the LSiD, that unites all data of the citizen in a microchip that can be carried in a card or in any wearable equipment. Foreigners visiting Lisander also get temporary LSiDs with its own information, in case of they need to use some public service, like a hospital. This is not refusable, and failure to comply with this regulation will get foreigners deported. So, if you don't want to get tracked, watch the rounds of Lisander on TV.

Helena Kaczakzy had seen her workload increase as the second WGP2 campaign had progressed from the opening weekend in Yakumicha—where the memories of the previous visit were still fresh—until now, as they prepared to head to Lisander for the penultimate race meeting of the season; she was the gatekeeper to access of the current leader of the driver's championship, her friend and “little brother”, Batu Tüvshinbayar.

Helena had given some thought to the differences—and similarities—between the two people she'd spent nearly 80% of her waking hours with over the last 2 years. At 28, she was almost as distant in age between Batu (19) as she'd been from Saki Kuyara (35), but she'd played nearly the same kind of role with both; she was protective and supportive of Batu like a 'big sister' would be, while for Saki she'd been a best girlfriend, sharing confidences and being there for the ups & downs of the everyday experience of a race driver.

Batu had told her much of the story from the evening with Adonis Fitzpatrick in Abahnfleft; she'd been concerned about his going by himself in the first place, at least the trip to the country, not so much the actual meeting.
But she'd listened to his recap of the evening with a feeling that somehow he'd gotten what he hoped he'd find on the trip, and of course she noticed the heightened self-confidence during the race weekend at Esmerel.

Here in Lisander, in the paddock at the Grandeville Circuit on the day before practice, she prevailed on 'Smitty'--Ben Smith, who was Jordan Crowe's (and previously Pedro Carballal's) handler/PA--to take a walk with her.

"What's on your mind, Kaz (he was the only one who called her that now, as it had been her nickname in school)?"
"I thought we'd go down and thank Sal on behalf of our guys for the gifts he gave them a few races back."
"And...?"
"That's it. Just say 'hey' to the UrGa folks. They were really nice to us last season when we were struggling, we should show we're not snobs now that we've had good fortune."

Smitty rolled his eyes, but knew he couldn't really dispute her flimsy rationale. "Are we going to have a goodwill tour of the entire pit lane? Here, we should at least look in on Ryden as we're at their motorhome."
Although the two didn't have much contact with the trialists from pre-season except acting as guides during the factory visit, they still ran across Angela Tan Fang Ling, Bryce Yannec and Sam Blaatschaap occasionally and congratulated or commiserated with them on results.

Smitty asked one of the folks if Solow was close by so they could say hello, and the Beepean emerged from the motorcoach a minute later; they traded pleasantries and the pair wished the young man good luck in the battle for the championship.

When they reached the UrGa camp, Sal was sitting under the awning having a bite to eat with a couple of the crew. "Sal, hi. Just wanted to come by to congratulate you on the win last time, and say on behalf of Batu and Jordan thank you for the gifts you gave them earlier in the season, if they haven't already said so themselves." Helena was breezy and nonchalant. "Batu told he missed out on getting to meet up with you after Auruna."
They'd finished up and started to leave when Donny came out of the motorhome. "Hey, hi Donny. Helena, Smitty." She pointed at themselves, as you didn't always assume people knew who you were just because they recognized your face. "We were strolling around and decided to stop to congratulate Sal." They made the usual chit-chat with the Fleftic and bid him well.

"There, you got a chance to see him in person, now you can go back and tell Batu you approve of his new friend."
She waved him away. "I already gave him the benefit of the doubt when he'd invited Batu to his town. All the secret note stuff could've unnerved the guy, but once he found out why Bat had taken that route, it was good to see he was willing to strike up a friendship."

Post-Race

"Hey, I recognize both of you, appreciate your visit. Didn't expect it," Sam Blaatshcapen opened as Helena Kaczakzy and Ben Smith approached her and gave their commiserations.

...

"Don't sweat it," she answered. The race itself was nothing to write home about. All she could do is to avoid last place.

Over the season, she found some time to bond with her teammate, Chiruno Hakusoe, who was more distraught than her due to the DNF she experienced. "Want to head to the shop to get some new stuff? Perhaps to think about other things?"

...

Walking through the shops of Grandeville, Sam and Chiruno encountered things of interest and acquired her. The former was pleased at the convenience of the temporary LSiD provided upon arriving in Lisader. Its high technology is undisputed, akin to the uniform identification card system that Diarcesian citizens have.

The mechanics of VSK-White Unicorns had way less than 24 hours to reconfigure Kyidawa and Aaron's cars for the sprint race. The motors were checked and rechecked, and the electronic interfaces were run through arcane diagnostics tools to ensure all parameters were nominal. Everyone heavily anticipated the results. Both of the drivers finished well within points-scoring range in the feature race. Their talent and luck would define where they would finish in the sprint, and how much more can they close the gap with the championship leaders.

MaxxFuels WGP2 Race of Lisander - Sprint Race

The tension on the garage floor at the PRL Center wouldn't have been noticeable to an outsider, but was definitely heavy in the air as the preparation for the season finale in Vilita for both the Scuderia and Orange Cow Racing weighed on the minds of the mechanics and the engineering staff; the results in Lisander were about as good as could be expected in light of Batu's struggle with race pace, as Jordan's two high scoring finishes prevented other drivers from overtaking Batu in the drivers championship.

The additional failure of the two drivers closest to the TJUN-ian--Alvis Kalvin Lacsamana and Ryden Solow--to take advantage of their superior starting positions to close to the gap meant that the SOC #9 car would go into the final round in the same situation as before Round 9.

The junior team didn't have the same fortunate circumstances despite Nick Unger's 4th place finish in Hapilopper City; they were 25 points back in the constructors table, with Unger and Sammi Carter nearly level on points (50 & 51), but well down in 9th and 8th respectively in the drivers championship. A victory and some luck might still see either have a chance to leapfrog into the title, or at least into the top 3 of the final standings, which provided enough motivation to push the crew to match the Scuderia in intensity in the leadup to final race weekend.

Commercial Director Jill Franklin and Media/PR Director Rebecca Paulson came up with an idea to do something to break the tension of "load-up day", when the team haulers were prepped for the trip to the airport for loading onto the plane; they enlisted the back office staff and the PRL employees to put together a 'pep rally', along with food catered in from a luncheonette in Haskins, for the mechanics, techies and engineers.

The planned spontaneity was just what was needed at just the right moment, a bit of levity and fun that reinforced the confidence of the entire organization as they approached the biggest occasion in the two year history of the team. They were on the verge of capturing the Constructors Championship of a series that they'd been dead last in for most of their debut season, as well as lifting one of their own to the Driver's Championship; they weren't supposed to be in this position, they'd reached it through thousands of man-hours of hard work, with a lot of fun mixed in along the way.

Deputy Team Principal Vic Marzetti had made sure that a last minute addition was made to the cargo manifest at Osheana International Field prior to takeoff for Vilita, unbeknownst to anyone on the plane--12 cases of $80 per bottle Champagne, just in case.

WGP2 Pt19: The Fight Till The End...

Postby TJUN-ia » Sat Dec 18, 2021 8:45 am

WGP2 S5
Round 9
MaxxFuels WGP2 Race(s) of Lisander
Circuito de Grandeville, Grandeville, Lisander
Post-Race

The pressure was certainly starting to fight within his mind and he knew everything was on him now. Batu Tüvshinbayar had to fight, fight, fight like never before if he wanted to create history for himself, for his family at SOC and for all of TJUN-ia. This weekend showed the Mongolian that it was most certainly on HIM to try and bring it home...and it was starting to take its toll on him.

Round 9 of this season would be a double-header at Circuito de Grandeville in Lisander and with both Batu and SOC holding single-digit leads in the championships, every single session would count for everyone in this battle no one saw coming. Everyone in this unit, from Helena and Smitty to Estes and Crowe, have been nothing but stars to him ever since he signed the dotted line and he felt like he had to give them all something in return. Unfortunately, Friday would show his struggles with the track layout with his 22nd in Practice showing what was to come. Adonis Fitzpatrick, the chestnut angel he confided in a few weeks ago (don't tell him you called him that, he might get the wrong idea...or the right idea...or any idea), took this session over Alvis Kalvin Lacsamana and Pande Putu Raka Ganesha with Jordan Crowe certainly doing better in 12th. Qualifying would see some improvement, with Batu starting the Feature in 19th and Crowe from 6th, it still looked like it was going to be a battle for the Mongolian to make an impact this weekend. Ryden Solow took pole over Daniel Rae and Aaron Deering while Donny would now start right ahead of Batu in 18th.

The Feature Race was 41 laps long but Batu, those 41 laps were certainly frustrating. He tried his best, in a race that saw Solow DNF, to try and find a way towards those Top 10 positions...but it just wasn't to be. He ended up in 16th by the end of the race, not good at all for his title hopes, but P4 for Crowe saved SOC's dignity on Saturday and that earned him a Batu hug. Skiia Vialiv ended up winning this race over Angela Stella Tan Fang Ling and Deering and with a lot of potential contenders getting some big points (and Donny in 13th), Batu knew he had to get at least something from Sunday. He had to.

Nikhil Pillai would start on pole for the sprint and to say Batu tried was an understatement. He tried and to fight his way towards those points, even giving a small wave to Donny as he overtook the Fleft, but in the end, he could only manage P13. Crowe ended up in 3rd, a podium Batu made sure to congratulate him on post-race, while Kyidawa Sherpa took the race itself over ASTFL. The chaos of this weekend means that everything is certainly u for grabs at the finale at the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course. Batu still led the standings but only by 3 points to Aaron Deering, with a further 6 drivers (AKL, Solow, Vialiv, Crowe, Sherpa and Vilau) all still in a mathematical shut to the throne. The Constructors fight was tight as well, with Scuderia Orange Cow now ahead of Tropicorp VilBev GP2 and Viska White Unicorns by 6 points and ANMARA still within a shout.

So...it would all come down to this. One final round to try and break the chains of expectation and claim this title. SOC deserved every single thing they got and Batu would make sure to tell everyone that no matter what happens next week, they had done him proud. He was going to fight for this and while the pressure was high, so was the reward for glory if he can do it. He had a message to send but after that, it was time to get serious...the fate of his career lay in the balance. He didn't know what he would do after this season concluded...but he knew that this part of his life won't be forgotten, for better or for worse...

And now, more texts to Donny.
Hey there
Sorry, I didn't write to you sooner, but the Championship fight is always getting tougher and tougher.

First of all, I wanted to thank you for...listening to all my woes back in Effelelendro.
I apologise if I...burdened you with...everything from my past.
I know it wasn't exactly...the answer you were looking for, but I felt that I...needed to get that off the chest.
I'm sorry if that weight affected your perception of me...but if I wanted to be honest and so...I was.

It was nice of you to be there for me as I...let all the demons out of the closet.
No seriously, I mean it...you were a brilliant listener and I can't thank you enough.

You helped me face all the ills of my life and actually made me see how...horrible everything was.
I knew my upbringing wasn't "normal" by any means but...I missed out on so much that I couldn't tell just how far from normal it was.
So...thank you. For bringing that to light for me.

You said something about how I needed to cherish my "real friends", those that'll stick with me through thick and thin.
Well...
uh...
Is it alright that...you are one of them?

I mean, if you don't want to then that's totally fine, but...
I felt like I could rely on you in Effelelendro so...maybe we could do it again?

I've got a big one ahead of me now...and your words shall help me through it, no matter what.
Wish me luck, Donny.

The Valentians – 1st Cpt. Angela Stella Trista Hannah Tan Fang Ling – Chapter 10 – Double Luck.

1st Cpt. Angela Stella Trista Josephine Natalie Rv. E. Tps. “The Eternal Explorer” Bethany Alyssa Valeska Payton. Mikayla Gosling Josie Rowan Serenity Chelsea Lynette Hannah Tan Fang Ling stood at the podium, holding her silver medal high and proud, a thousand flashes and photos being shot and taken. Kyidawa Sherpa stood on the first place podium with the trophy, with Jordan Crowe on the other side. For Angela, being second did not exactly faze her as much; there is a thing about how being second is the worst because first means you made it, and third means you are great enough to score that well. Second, on the other hand, signified that you made it, but not as great. Good enough, but not perfect. Everyone knows who won the race, but not a lot of people tend to care about who got second. For Angela, however, this felt different and she loved it. It was from the recent races in Lisander.

For once, this was one of the race where she got points. Not just one or two points, but a lot to make up for the lack of performance and victory that she was showing over the past few races. Secondly, this was the second race that she placed 2nd for, twice in a row. It reminded her of the time Adriana won two feature races in a row. "Better than not getting points at all, that's for sure!" Angela thought to herself, nodding and waving around with the medal still in her right hand and her helmet on her left hand. All of those moments where she had let down Fireline race after race after race finally paid off in the form of this week - the 2 races before the final once ends the season. Angela wasn't sure as to whether or not Fireline might ask her to come back for the next season, despite the performance that she has put up; after all, 2 races can't make up for the failures and fumbles that she had over the past few races. This was especially damning because Fireline did not even ask her for tryouts; they simply added her into their team and gave her the best support they could give. With Angela being extremely honest, she does not think that Fireline is at the top of the teams, at least not now, not yet. There are a few of the best teams out there like the Scuderia Orange Cow, Tropicorp VilBev GP2, and Viska White Unicorns. For Angela, however, just like with Adriana, she felt right at home at Fireline Academy. They have supported her from the start of the season till the end, and she is more than confident that they will show the same support for her, for the final race of the season.

As she walked away from the crowd, away from the reporters and photographers for the time being, she collected her thoughts as she made her way back to her lounge. She locked the door behind her, preferring some alone time of her own. It was not so much that she hated the crowd; Angela has been yearning to blend in with the crowd as much as she could, owing to the fact that she often spent a considerable amount of time either alone in space or exploring other planets - whether or not they have hostile or hospitable flora and fauna. It was good to get onto Earth (at least, the Earth that most of these sporting nations are on) and meet back the people. Of course, it fared better for Angela when she started using space warping methods to travel large distances and beyond what the speed of light would permit. She remembered that one moment during the pre-Valentian Era where she was sent off for a long space mission, only for time dilation to throw a wrench into her life - when she landed back on Earth, 40 years have passed, with the Valentians then ruling the planet. Even though her old life was more or less gone, Angela didn't really mind as much, given the benevolent nature of the Valentians and with Gwen allowing her to peer into her past years. Re-collecting her thoughts, she then took out her firesuit and her clothes for a shower. This was soon followed by her wearing her usual scientist outfit, with gloves and everything. "I can't believe I wore this inside," she thought to herself with a grin, explaining why she felt warm for that race, as well as having to wash her previous outfit. With a glass of grape juice in her hand, she turned on the TV, watching some local news about the recent race that happened. In particular, she perked her ears on the fact that they mentioned her getting two 2nd placements consecutively. It most certainly was something, and Angela was more than confident that she is able to do it for the final race ahead. Still, Angela knows that it was not just herself that does the running. She drove the car, but at the end of the day, there were a lot of people out there who have helped her out. Anastasia have provided a lot of performance-based advice, on top of Marcus giving defensive advices. There are many others that help.

Devin Ballard is one such person. One of the head mechanics of the Fireline team hailing from Ethane, he and his crew have been nothing but supportive for Angela. When she needed something that needs to adjusted, she can rely on Devin. The car steering not going so well? Devin. The car suffered a damage? Devin will ask the team to fix it for her, no strings attached. And more importantly, Angela remembered those nights where she needed extra practice. With the practice and qualification sessions done, Angela figured that she can request to use the official simulation. The Valentians have access to their own simulation and with even more state-of-the-art technology, but when it comes to vehicles, nothing will beat the official one, in terms of physics and everything. That night before the Feature Race in Circuito de Grandeville, Angela - still in her usual outfit - approached Devin while he was talking to a few of his other assistants and staff. He turned around, charismatic as ever, as he waved and greeted, "Hey, Angela! A little late out here, ain't it? Anyway, what can I help you with?" Smiling and greeting in turn, Angela nodded and replied back, "Hi, Devin! Ahh, if you are free right now, I would like to ask on if I can spend a few extra hours on your simulation." Without even a hint of hesitation, Devin replied back with an absolute yes, "Of course! Let me just settle a few things for them and for Sullivan, then I will tend to you, all right? Don't worry, it won't take too long, I hope." For Angela, the very fact that he accepted to stay up slightly later usual was more than enough.

30 minutes passed since their last conversation, with Angela waiting and playing a few video games on her phone to pass the time. It wasn't exactly easy to play a first-person shooter on a phone even with the physical controller attached to it. However, she was more than happy with the fact that she was able to play computer games, on a portable device that is as powerful and versatile as a desktop from the 2020s. She could bring a portal screen to use as well, though that would have been a bit of an overkill. For that moment, being able to play a casual match or two was more than rewarding. "Victory!" the game blared out, Angela showing a small grin. And just in time, Devin opened the door to one of the rooms that Fireline rented in the complex, with the simulation ready to go. "All right, Angela! She's good to go!" With glee and determination, Angela hopped on inside, started running laps as Devin (as well as 2 assistants) were watching her, giving her pointers along the way. "I know this has been difficult for you, Angela," Devin started talking a little bit more while Angela was on her 8th lap of her practice, "And to be honest, we are simply happy that you are still here to drive with us. It's not exactly easy at the starting point and fighting uphill against the more well-known and versatile teams and their drivers. Nonetheless, I am glad that you believed in us and are still here." For the Valentians, quitting halfway was not exactly unheard of. Jolyn having to resign was an exception, because another driver wanted her spot badly for the finals and with her poor performance, she had no choice but to give up. Other than that isolated exceptional incident, the Valentians are known for fighting till the end, no matter how insignificant and small their chances might be. They either were the ones to finish till the end, or were officially eliminated by the rounds and matchups, never because they voluntarily resigned. And Angela was more than ready to go out with a bang. No matter what happens, she will stay with Fireline and race for them.

Come the two races the next day - Feature and Sprint Race, on the same course - Angela was more than ready. She waved at the Fireline team with a smile, donning her helmet and doing last minute checks before pushing her car onto the starting point. "Today, things are going to be different," she thought to herself, as the lights went green and with the green flag waved. Fast forward to the end of the race, Angela placed 2nd for the Feature race, earing 18 points for herself and for Fireline. Everyone was exuberant over the outcome, especially Angela who never thought that she would get this at the end. After so many fumbles and failures, she did it. This was amazing on its own, and Angela wasn't expecting the same outcome for the next race. Perhaps it will be someone else on the podium, on the same spot. As Fate would have it, that day never came. Going bumper to bumper with #30's Kyidawa Sherpa alongside her, the two zoomed in and headed towards the finish line, indeterminate as to who would win the race at that moment. "This is very tight! It's going to be VERY close! Go Kyidawa! Go Angela!" the announcers and hosts exchanged on the PA system, almost as if they were fighting for the microphone. Angela slowly pressed down on the accelerator, making sure not to overdo and to fumble at this crucial moment. After all, it would be heartbreaking to crash and burn after coming this far. "This is going to be close! It's going to be sensational! Anddddd... KYIDAWA WON! And Angela came in at a close second with 91 MILLISECONDS! Holy moly, that is one of the closest races we have ever seen." With the car safely coming to a halt, Angela got out of it, taking out her helmet and holding up high for the audience that was going wild for them - Kyidawa, Angela, Jordan, Darian, and many more others. Angela simply had a thought as she walked up slowly to the podium, proud and joyous over her results, "These are those who said this day would never come, what are they to say now?" Second second finish, a good comeback.

Still, Angela knows that even with such a victory, she is not going to get Championship. For her, she never even thought of that, for her first thought at the start of the season was simply to get into Fireline. On top of that, she was aware that she is not going to win her championship on her first season, for these kind of things take time. "Championship is unfortunately out of my reach," Angela thought to herself, still smiling to herself a little bit, "But that's okay! There is a last race coming, and maybe I can do something eventful for that. Maybe even my first victory! A 1st! Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course, here I come! For now, I will enjoy the victory." Turning a little to her side, and then stepping off before she goes back into her lounge, she figured that she would like to interact with one person, one that she figured she might as well maybe start a conversation with - Jordan Crowe. Angela slowly walked up to him with a smile of her own, and then shook his hand. "Hello there, Jordan! It's me, Angela! Just would like to say congratulations on your finish too, I am so happy for you! I hope you will get that championship, my friend!" She then took turns and said the same thing to Kyidawa Sherpa, wondering if he might know about the NSSCRA Valentians. "Hmm, maybe not... Maybe they might even have a rivalry," Angela thought, hesitating a little as she finished her conversation with Jordan, "But you know, it can't hurt to ask!" She approached Kyidawa and exchanged congratulations and well dones on the race, and then she went to ask, "So... I know this is a bit unusual asking, but I was wondering - do you happen to know Kai Qiang or Rinzi, or the other drivers? I heard he is quite a figure in NSSCRA, from what my friends told me! Again, sorry if this is a little out of the blue, but I was just curious, haha!"

What goes up must eventually come down, and in Lisander, the Urotovsky-Gatutin Motorsports Division had proven that to be true once again. Even while they were gearing up for practice, the whole team just had this feeling that they were going to struggle this weekend. It was in stark contrast to the absolute peak that they had reached when Shalmaneser Kalhu had won in the previous race week, and no matter what the team did, UrGa just couldn't get itself out of this particular doldrums, and the team followed up their victory in Esmerel with an ignominious finish outside the points for both drivers.

Well, actually, that wasn't entirely true. Adonis Fitzpatrick did manage to top the standings for the practice session, but when the time came for him to replicate that performance in qualifying and both the feature and sprint races, he just couldn't do it. No matter how many changes he made to the car, he just couldn't make it go faster than anyone else. Which was a downright shame, actually. There was clearly pace in the car, and it was also capable of overtaking, as evidenced by the five places overall that he had gained in the race. But for some reason, Donny just couldn't find that pace during qualifying, resulting in this absolute shambles of a race weekend.

"Well, Vova, this was a bust," he said as he brought his GP2-5-3 into parc ferme. "The pace was there, but we just couldn't find it in Saturday."

"We're sorry about that, Donny," Vladimir Gennadiyevich Kripchak, Donny's race engineer, said back. "We'll get to work on that back in the factory in Myrilsk."

"One more race, Vova," Donny said. "One more race left in the season. Even if we're out of the race for both the drivers' and constructors' championships, I would really love it if we could close out this season with a bang."

"I would really love that too, Donny," Kripchak nodded back.

Donny hopped out of his car and sought out Batu Tüvshinbayar, who was now the leader in the drivers' standings, three points clear of his closest rival Aaron Deering, but he was nowhere to be seen. Batu had finished directly ahead of Donny in this particular sprint race, but that was in P13 so that meant that the Mongolian had also finished outside of the points, and Donny had a feeling that Batu had gone off to a private place to process his not having gotten any points in this race. Donny had wanted to tell Batu to keep his chin up and turn his focus to the final race of the season, but maybe now was not the time to talk about that. Oh well. Donny turned around and shifted his attention to his teammate Sal Kalhu. "Hey man," he called out to Sal. "I still haven't heard back from you about that dinner in Adab City. The guys are still waiting to find out where you're going to take us to celebrate that win, and they want to know what they can eat so they can plan ahead. Like I said before, I'm paying, so don't worry about the money. It's the least I can do for you after you treated us after my win. Remember, we're still waiting!"

Donny replies to Batu's texts
No need to say sorry 4 evry single thing man, like I said, I'll always b here 4 u if u need it

Of course I'll b ur friend Batu! Said it b4 & I'll say it again, if u need sum1 2 talk abt anything then just hit me up

& good luck wit d championship mate, u certainly need it

If theres 1 thing I can offer 2 u as advice, when u win d championship, don't win it 4 anybody. Don't win it 4 me, don't win it 4 ur mom, don't win it 4 Orange Cow & Jordan & Helen & Smitty & evry1 else. Win that championship 4 urself

...

"Yeah Raiko?"

"Jöna, I just want to ask about Aaron's MNA license. How's it going there?"

"It's already done, he can retrieve it back here at Sterlennau, I know you guys are busy as well so just take your important time. He's still officially has the license, he doesn't need it with him everytime. With this, he can race domestically here and I can't wait to see him race here. It's a nice way to prepare him for next season."

"Heh, the kid is good. He has certainly proved himself and he's currently second in the championship. Looks like you guys have an eye for talent there."

"Yeah heh, thanks. I'll be watching out. I heard a lot from Tomaš and I'll be there in your garage for the races. Maybe as a good luck charm?"

"If that works, then come on over."

"Haha, I'll be sure to do so. I'm already excited for the final race, both in WGP2 and WGPC. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Anyway, I'll be going now."

"Alright, see ya."

The entire team looked strong since the start of the weekend at Lisander. From qualifying to the races, both drivers were strong all throughout, showing significant pace and proving themselves to everyone. With Aaron's podium in the feature race and Kyidawa's win at the sprint after a close finish, Raiko and the entire VSK half of the team could feel more success than ever before as they were still in the championship fight. It's something that they missed out on after the struggles of the previous season. And now, it all comes down to the final race weekend.

Regarding their drivers, both Kyidawa and Aaron are still in the fight for the drivers' championship and following a boost in morale after the successful Lisander weekend, both are obviously aiming to take the championship for themselves. Since Aaron recently became an official Viska driver with an MNA license, extra pressure was put on him to perform at the final weekend, for the team, and for himself. Even Tomaš, Aaron's race engineer, was able to feel the higher pressure on Aaron so with al his efforts, he would keep supporting Aaron no matter what come the final race of the season.

Work continued as usual at the factories of both White Unicorns and VSK, all in effort to finish the season on a high. WIth Raiko and the rest of the VSK team putting in more hours than usual to help prepare everything. To win, is the primary goal they had in mind. With eight drivers and four teams in contention, who doesn't want to take the title for themselves?

As Haru fell off, he kept asking himself. What the hell am I doing here? It filled his thoughts after a series of poor performances and it's not only him that suffered. His teammate, and the entire team in general seemingly lost all drive at the latter half of the season. Haru asked over and over to himself and he couldn't stop but after one faithful encounter at Karalinne gave him the motivation he needed but still, he couldn't say what he wanted. But still, at least he has something to keep him going. One thing that makes him crave for more racing, whatever happens. He just needs to wade through the deep floods of negativity in his mind to reach it. Though it is uncertain when he will reach it.

As the final weekend looms near, he fears his future in the sport. Worried about where he will end up or will he even get another chance. Maybe at the last race, he needs to show that he still belonged while chasing something that he desired. The will to race should return to him as he steps into his Nexus car for the final race of the season.

It should bring him back to his senses.

Laura, Ivan, Kälö, and Zuiha... I won't let you guys down.

Life on the Edge
An Adabian tries to make it in the racing world

Chapter 14: The Dinner

Imperial Restaurant
Adab City, Adab

The car stopped at the back entrance, well-hidden behind the thick green bushes and alleyways. It helped somewhat that the night was starless, and the lights attached to the walls on the final turn to the entrance were dimmed. All things considered it was quite competently hidden, considering that even it was though it was the back entrance, it was the back entrance to one of the most famous establishments in the city. If you knew next to nothing about the local geography, you would probably have easily missed that final turn.

Two ushers were posted by the entrance – a small, decidedly unadorned wooden door. One of them stepped forward to open the car doors, and out stepped three men: Sal Kalhu, his manager Aida Kaykali, and his stepfather and sponsor Mustafa al-Taghlibi. Mustafa took the lead as they stepped towards the door. “They’ve arrived here, right?” he asked, leaning towards the other usher standing near the door.

“Yes, sir,” answered the usher, opening the door and pointing the way inside. “They just arrived some fifteen minutes ago. We’ve taken them to the VVIP room.”

“Good,” Mustafa said, a smile forming on his face as he took his first steps into the building, with Sal and Aida following him and the ushers stepping to the front to lead them to the VVIP room.

As they made their way through the back path towards the VVIP room, past the kitchens and toilets, Sal found himself leaning forward at Mustafa, whispering in his ear, “Mr. al-Taghlibi, don’t embarrass us all, okay? They’ve come here as our guests.”

“I won’t,” said Mustafa in the faintest possible voice that he could muster, so as not to be heard by the ushers.

All the food had been laid down on the long oval table, all the finest delicacies that Adabian cuisine had to offer. Quzi, masgouf, maqluba, and several glasses of the best arak for Donny and the Pridnestrovian guests, though the Adabians chose to treat themselves to good old water for religious reasons.

The arak flowed freely, and so did the conversation between the hosts and their guests. Sal and Donny and the UrGa crew were eating and laughing all night long, looking back on their first season together in the team, celebrating their wins and podium places. Aida spent much of the time talking with Sal’s race engineer Illarion, mostly asking him about the specifications of Sal’s car and about racing in general. Even Mustafa, at the head of the table, managed to get in more than a few words with Illarion and the crew and, most surprisingly, Vasily Semyonovich Gatutin himself. It was cordial and respectful, although there was an unavoidable air of coldness in their conversation, thanks to Mustafa’s disparagement of UrGa’s “socialist engineering”.

But Mustafa knew the value of maintaining good relations with these people. He might have hated them, but he – and Sal – also needed them. After all, if it hadn’t been for these people, Sal might be driving an inferior car right now, or he might not have been in WGP2 at all. It was a marriage of convenience, one he entered into for Sal’s sake, and one that he might need to extend into the next year.

So, at a certain point late into the dinner, but not too late so as to prevent his audience from being too wasted from all the drinks, Mustafa rose to his feet, holding his glass up high. He scanned the entire VVIP room from end to end. There’s Sal, Aida, Donny and his engineer Kripchak, Sal’s engineer Illarion, and the rest of the UrGa crew. Oh, and Gatutin, of course. Their eyes now turned to him.

“My friends,” Mustafa began, mustering a confident smile as if genuinely believing everyone in the room was his friend, “I hope you’ve enjoyed the food and drinks so far. As I’m sure you all know, this is the best restaurant in all of Adab, with the best food that this country has to offer. This is the pinnacle of Adabian cuisine.

“I know it has been a long and eventful journey for us all. Many people thought this partnership wouldn’t work, but obviously we’ve made it work. And if anyone doubted that then you can just show them our race results so far.

“So I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for all your hard work this year. For the UrGa crew, your hard work assembling the cars for Sal and Donny will never be forgotten. I certainly will not forget it.”

He leaned down somewhat, turning his head towards Gatutin, seated next to him on his right-hand side. “And, of course, my dear friend Vasily Semyonovich, you have made all this possible. None of this would have happened without your hard work as team principal. Sal and I owe you our thanks.”

Then he turned to look ahead again, taking in the view of the table all the way to the end and everyone gathered around it. “Long may this partnership continue!”

With Kyidawa's sprint win in Lisander, establishing himself as a mathematically possible champion going to the final race, and a good position for the team to grab the constructors' championship, VSK-White Unicorns' late charge continued. They checked and double-checked that everything would be in order for the upcoming weekend.

Amid the team's hard work, team principal Louis Meissner could also feel the pressure in the background. The season would end soon, with four teams in the hunt to emerge at the top. He was immensely thankful of VSK's experience in this tier of motor racing, and how it made both of their drivers' difficult and stressful campaigns bear much fruit. Although a technical guy at heart, Louis had grown accustomed to the demands of the team principal job. He was further motivated knowing that the team was capable of winning races and a podiums.

Sam Blaatschapen read numerous articles on the saga that placed her in ENSADRINK, and how she dragged that shitbox to earn 38 points, and how everyone should watch out for the heiress apparent of one of PB's driver spots. She agreed that the ENSADRINK cars floundered after a promising preseason start, but she had grown to like the people she worked with, especially Chiruno Hakusoe.

In the leadup to the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course, she and her manager Aldauren met in the latter's office. Once again, the former apologized for what happened earlier, but Sam brushed it off. She let him know how she learned a lot in her stay in ENSADRINK, and went on to mention that it was ultimately a much-needed preparation for her eventual WGPC career.

It did not take long for new articles to pop up on the rumored induction of Sam Blaatschapen to PB for WGPC 20.

With the final race set in Vilita, the eight (8) contending drivers have been in multiple events leading to the last race.

These events started with a press interview in a function room of a prominent hotel in Rockii Coast.

When Aaron entered the function room, he shook hands and bumped fists with the other drivers, giving a dap and a pound hug to his teammate, Sherpa. He shook hands last with Batu, who never stood up until Aaron extended his hand. When they finally shook hands, and when Aaron thought that Batu was trying to pull him, Aaron let go of Batu, holding up his own hands, and said, "No reason to be aggressive!"

The other drivers stood up, ready to defuse any rising tension. Alvis Lacsamana, who was closest to Aaron, went in the middle of Aaron and Batu, putting his forearm on Aaron's chest while holding up his hand in Batu's direction.

"You don't have to grasp that hard!" Batu said.

"I'm good, man," Aaron told Alvis with a low voice, "well, you have to grasp when shaking hands, right?" shaking hands with him again, and both of them laughed.

When everything settled, Aaron went to his seat between Batu and Alvis. Ryden was in the left of Batu, while the other four (4) drivers were behind them, in a raised platform. Aaron then faced the press and asked jokingly and smiled, "And you expect me to sit beside him?"

When the laughter died down, a local reporter then proceeded to ask, "Before we proceed to talk about the coming race and WGP2, what happened earlier, Aaron?"

Without turning his mic on yet, he asked Batu if he wanted to answer the question, too. Still, Batu did not respond, so Aaron shrugged and proceeded, "The pressure is now coming upon us, and maybe a little action that the other drivers can misrepresent can irk us now, so what happened earlier is a reminder that everyone's going to be careful now. I'd also take this opportunity to apologize for my actions if Batu thought it was rash and harsh."

When asked about his approach in the coming race, Aaron replied, "Needless to say, my driving will do the talking come qualifying and race day."

-----------------

In Aaron's hotel room, that evening

"Er, I just saw a dozen of people in black suits from the lobby up to here going to your room," Jamie said after entering the room.

"He's not the president of the country, but you can compare his security detail to the Presidential Security Service," Aaron said.

"Who?"

"My father didn't tell you that he's coming here?"

"No, I did not. Though your mom and your sister are in the room directly in front of this one, Logan's in another room."

"The security detail should give it away. Though, don't let him near me until the race is over. But from now up to the race time, just don't. I don't want to think about anything else other than the race."

Jamie just sighed and said, "Okay, if that's what you wish."

-----------------

Aaron's week was hectic, and he couldn't wait to get to his car. The rest of the non-race events were shooting for promotional videos (both related and not related to the coming race), interviews, fan services (of which Aaron still can't believe he got some, now with the rising number because of his rise in the standings), sponsorship obligations, among others.

And he has not seen his father throughout his events.

Also, being with the other drivers in the last week of the season made him close (or rather, be in a casual conversation) with the other drivers. He thought he should've made this in the earlier part of the season. He can talk about whatever things related to driving with them. And he looks forward to chatting with them in the next season. But as to where it is, Aaron's still undecided to stay in WGP2 or push for a WGPC seat. Though, he knows Logan approached the WGPC teams first at the start of the season. Will Aaron want Logan to do it again next year or stay for another season in WGP2? So many questions were entering Aaron's head, but he doesn't want them to answer now, as he can do that all in the off-season.

Practice day

Before Aaron proceeded to his car, he gave his crew daps and pound hugs. He also did not forget to thank them for all of their fantastic work throughout this season. He also went to Sherpa and talked with him a little bit.

"Let's finish this season strong, man."

Aaron also gave a dap and a pound hug to Sherpa, as well as to Sherpa's crew.

Turning his engine on, he said to the radio, "It's showtime."
