(OOC: It is EXTREMELY important to point out that I am not accusing anyone in this RP of cheating, or of having spies in the garage, nor am I implying anything about a nation that is not mine. I am touching on a topic that I thought about this past weekend – that of spies in a racing garage. The characters in this RP are merely speculating, not implying fact.)

Leading up to the Tundra Falls 500
“What does this knob do?”

It was an innocuous question that Bart Wheeler had asked Babe Wilkes, the chief mechanic for the Green Bros. Racing Team. But it was a strange-looking knob, one that normally didn’t belong on a stock car. Babe took one look at the knob, nodded his head and smiled.

“More power,” Babe said.

“More power?” Bart asked.

“Yeah, more power,” Babe said. “If anyone asks, it’s a rollbar adjuster, which, by the way, is legal.”

“What is it really?” Bart asked.

“You sweet summer child,” Babe replied. “It makes you laugh and it gives you more power.”

“You mean… oh hell no,” Bart said. “You mean…”

“Yes, don’t say it,” Babe replied. “People can hear you. You familiar with the concept of spies?”

“No.”

“Well, let’s talk about it in private.”

Bart thought Babe was being a little bit paranoid, but the fact was, he actually wasn’t. In certain levels of motorsport, including the top level of motorsport in Northwinds, race teams would employ outsiders at the track for the weekend and ask them to take as many pictures as they could, and try to be sly about it. As the two got back to the small meeting room in the Green Bros. Racing transporter, Babe explained why he was trying to be quiet.

“A garage is an open environment,” Babe explained. “At least from what I’ve seen in this series. You don’t have to watch out for the guys you normally see. They’re the guys in the full uniform, they travel from place to place, they’re working on their own cars. Chances are, they’re not the ones being suspicious.”

“OK, what are you getting at?” Bart asked.

“You look at a guy, looks kind of haggard, wearing an old Shark Suzgar shirt and cut-off jeans, and he’s in the garage and is taking a lot of photos in places he shouldn’t be taking?” Babe continued. “That’s where you’ve got to watch out for. Chances are, they’re the ones with an audio recorder, trying to listen in to conversations between driver and crew chief. It’s the reason you hear guys talk in codes. They don’t want to be found out.”

“So you’re saying there’s spies.”

“Yeah, and it could be anyone,” Babe continued. “The guy in the Shark Suzgar shirt? GFR might have paid him top dollar to find something. Some rando with a media vest acting really suspicious? Team Blue or the Valkyrie General of Valentine Z probably paid them top dollar to look for something. I remember, a few years ago, we had a street race in Eastbay Park and I saw some guy leaning underneath my car trying to get pictures of the underside of my car. I threw a wrench at him and told him if I ever saw him again, well, that was a warning shot.”

“So, what does this have to do with that knob?” Bart asked.

“Bart, if the wrong person hears the wrong thing, they’re going to go running to NSSCRA officials,” Babe explained. “Or, they’re going to find out that we’re hiding nitrous oxide inside a fire extinguisher bottle, or in a cool suit, or in a drink compartment, and they’re going to try to do the same thing. Eventually, someone blabs, and we get suspended for half the season.”

“So we’re running nitrous,” Bart said, almost with a tone of resignation and frustration.

“We’re running nitrous,” Babe said. “I want to be competitive, man. I’ve got some things I’ve got planned, if we don’t get caught. The thing is, those things don’t really work at a place like this one. No sense in cutting weight, you’re going WFO the whole time. No sense in giving you more fuel, you’d lose the draft. But I guarantee you, everyone out there probably does it. We just need to find a way to be competitive with GFR or the Valentians or Team Blue or Vilita and Turori or the Sherpas.”

“Right,” Bart said.

“Loose lips sink ships. Remember that,” Babe said ominously.

Vasal-Jhai, Part 1

The Coven Ha'art has always been the Coven of Sorcerers and Magic. Though not as potent in blood magic as Coven Anastahai, the Vampires of Ha'art specialize in any other kind of magic, whether it be offensive, defensive, or utilitarian. They had five different names for five different roles in magic: The Shield, The Sword, The Staff, The Flame, and The Stone. Shields focused on defensive magic, sword on offensive magic, staff a mixture of both, flame purely utilitarian, and stone defensive attacks.

Nezera, the one in charge of Team Nightsisters, was a Flame. She specialized on magic that helped keep track of things that people would otherwise forget. It allowed her to see things that happened, things that could've happened, and things that should have happened but did not. Some deemed her an oracle, though her foresight wasn't good enough to formally be recognized as such.

After the first race of the season, Velorina and Lilith had failed to qualify, while Celeste finished in the bottom five. It was as expected - they were Vampires racing, after all - and more importantly, they had shown themselves out of there. There were some weird stares and murmurs, but they'd been left alone; they had done their part.

"Don't worry about it too much," Nezera said to Celeste afterwards, "We'll get the hang of it eventually. What matters is that we build a routine and keep at it."

Celeste nodded, her long white hair flowing without a breeze in the room. She was a Meurte, and some of the best of them could create mild weather patterns to help with their missions in shadow.

"Nezera, why are we really doing this?" Came the voice of Velorina, Lilith nearby, "This is more than just some motorsports."

Nezera looked around the room and waived her hands, shutting out all sound to and from the outside.

"Vasal-Jhai," whispered Nezera.

It wasn't often that a Vampire was caught off guard. The look on Velorina and Lilith's faces was that of pure astonishment.

Nezera paused for a moment of silence and stated calmly, "You understand the secrecy now, yes?"

The three other Vampires slowly nodded. Celeste's blue eyes were calculating, Velorina those of an enraged soul, and Lilith's held no remorse.

They would pay.

Tundra Falls Proving Grounds, Tundra Falls, Newmanistan
Leading up to the Tundra Falls 500
On paper, Team Blue should have been on top of the world following the Proving Grounds exhibition, but they weren’t. Drake Stevenson had been fined $15,000 by the NSSCRA for his ridiculous behavior following the exhibition race, but at least Good Motor Oil was more than happy to pay the fine. Worse, Thea Alvarez appeared to be offended by Drake’s show in the media center after the race. Drake liked Thea, and the last thing he wanted to do was upset her.

So, a day after the exhibition, he went on twii.tur and publicly apologized to Thea Alvarez, acknowledging that he had overstepped his boundaries. He wasn’t sure how she’d respond to it, but he hoped she’d understand. If not, he figured he’d understand. After all, he had acted like quite an asshole in the media room post-race. You can’t just pretend something like that hadn’t happened. He did it, the world’s media saw it, and the world saw it.

Chris Holmes was not impressed either. He sat in the Team Blue Center the day after the exhibition and when Drake came in, he confronted his teammate about that behavior.

“Stevenson, I don’t really want to be an uptight moralist prick about this, but that’s the same kind of shit they ripped on me for,” Chris said. “You really want to go out there and be known as the guy that gets drunk and do dumb shit every week? That’s the same reason Amanda fired me a year and a half ago.”

“God damn it, Holmes, I was just excited,” Drake shot back. “I get you, but I was just excited.”

“I get it, but please, man, just… behave yourself,” Chris said. “That sort of stuff makes me nervous. It makes me wonder if we’re going to go down that same path.”

While there was some dissension among the Team Blue ranks, the truth was that there was a lot to be excited about. The Team Blue engine shop had made some huge gains on their superspeedway engine program, and it showed in qualifying for the Tundra Falls 500. Drake was 2nd fastest. Taylor Henderson was 6th fastest and Chris was 7th. Supposedly the team had found a huge breakthrough in the middle of the offseason and it was worth somewhere between 20 and 40 horsepower – enough to propel them to the front of the field on superspeedways.

But what was that breakthrough? Hell, not even the drivers knew. Taylor Henderson heard about it on the Team Blue Shuttle flying to Newmanistan. When she asked chief engine builder Dell Newell about just what this breakthrough was, she was told to “mind her own business or else.”

“Just curious,” Hendo replied.

“Curiosity killed the race team, now scram,” Dell snapped. “I won’t ask nicely the next time.”

Why was the Team Blue engine department being so secretive? Well, for starters, Dell and his crew did not think too much of the idea of the team’s three drivers knowing what they were doing, then blabbing to the media about just what the team had done to get themselves to the front of the field. They figured if they kept it to themselves, the media wouldn’t report it. After all, the last time some dumbass reporter asked too many questions of Dell, he threw a wrench at the reporter’s head and told him to beat it.

The only thing that was different, though, was the sound of the engine. Rather than give off that throaty V8 sound that stock cars were supposed to give off, the Team Blue cars gave off a higher-pitched whine similar to a buzzing four-cylinder engine.

So, in Hapilopper, the Team Blue engine crew were known as surly and anti-social. Kind of unfair, really, because they were actually really nice guys, and away from the track, as long as you weren’t prodding them with questions that were too deep about what they were doing, they’d buy you a beer. In fact, Dell Newell was known at Andrew’s Pub as one of their best customers, even if they had to forcibly remove him a couple of times for going overboard with his partying.

That surliness came about again the night after qualifying, when Dell was sitting outside the Team Blue Center, smoking a cigarette. Drake Stevenson stepped outside for a smoke. As he was lighting his cigarette up, he figured he’d strike up a conversation.

“Dell, I gotta ask you something,” Drake said.

“If it’s about the engines, no,” Dell snapped. “All y’all need to know is that they’re better.”

“Yeah, but how?” Drake asked.

“Worked our asses off on them, that’s how,” Dell said before getting up and going for a walk. “Unless you want to talk about wrestling or beer or baseball or how Frank Bronson’s a putz, I’m going to ask you to please be so kind to fuck off and leave me alone.”

Realizing that he had been rude, Dell turned back towards Drake.

“Let me explain for a minute why I don’t want to talk about it,” Dell said. “And make sure Chris and Taylor know this. We’ve done a few things that I’d rather the other teams not know. Not because we’re doing anything illegal, but if they found out, they could copy it in nothing flat. I don’t want what we’re doing to get out to the media, because if they find out, you know?”

“OK, I just don’t like being brushed off, but I got you.”

“Yeah, we’d just rather keep it quiet. We’ve got other things we’re doing and we just want to keep it quiet. Because the last thing I want to see, or hear, is, say, someone else driving a car that sounds just like ours.”

Drake nodded his head.

“So… you see that bench-clearing brawl in the Nationals game last night?” Drake asked, kind of awkwardly.

“NOW you’re speaking my language!” Dell replied with a huge smile.

@HapiDrake81 I get it though. I got carried away by my emotions too, that time, because the wound from the loss was still fresh, y'know? But it's over. It's already in the record books that you beat me, and fairly at that. Let's just move on, okay?

Tundra Falls Proving Grounds, Tundra Falls, Newmanistan
Leading up to the Tundra Falls 500

As the days passed, Thea Alvarez became less and less upset about what happened between herself and Drake Stevenson at the end of and immediately after the Exhibition. Stacie Houston told Thea that it's okay to feel bad about losing a race, but also advised her that she shouldn't keep dwelling on it and instead look forward to the next one. Drake himself posted on Twii.tur, saying that he was just so overjoyed about beating Thea and didn't really mean to rub it in her face; Thea, believing that the apology was sincere, accepted it. The rest of her week went without any other issues as she and her fellow Glorious Free Republic members prepared for the Tundra Falls 500.

Soon it was qualifying all over again. Thea would qualify mid-pack like she did in the exhibition, putting out the 27th fastest time among the 56 drivers to attempt. Beside her in the fourteenth row would be her friend Maddison Riley-Jones from TJUN-ia, finally making her season debut after failing to make the field in the Exhibition. "Congratulations, girl!" Thea told Maddy upon meeting up later. "So happy for you - good luck tomorrow! But remember, I won't let you off that easy!"

Jeremiah Brooke will start five rows behind Thea at 37th. Despite this and last Sunday's 22nd place finish, he was hopeful that he could turn things around - after all, he won the final race of both the eighth and the ninth season at this very track. Also, if he manages to catch up to Thea, then he wouldn't have to worry about finding someone to work with in the early stages of the race.

Back at the hauler after his attempt, Jeremiah cracked open a can of ice cold Blood Moon Beer and sat on a deck chair drinking it and people-watching. There was quite a number of people who had come to watch the quals, and even more looking forward to the Everlong Series event in a few hours' time. Race fans are an assorted bunch. There was the fat bearded man with a River Suzgar shirt that appeared to be two sizes too small for him. Little girl, likely no older than four, in a replica Gwen Oxton firesuit. Six, no, seven young ladies in matching "Girls Will Code" shirts. And to their left, twin brothers of about ten. One, Jeremiah noted, was dressed in all red, white and blue with the number 18. Clearly one of his fans, which made him smile. The other had red, gold and 44 instead - he, in contrast with his brother, supports Kai Qiang. Jeremiah then turned to his hauler neighbors and realized that both of them are newcomers. Gavon Mitchell, driver of the #17, was tuning the world out with his headphones, while #19 Lilith (no last name listed) looked every bit like a goth. Not that he minded. Back in middle school, he dated one of the members of that particular subculture.

Sage Caldwell takes Jeremiah's position on the grid last week, starting in fourth and sandwiched between Drake and fellow Hapiloppian Taylor Henderson. "Man, this could spell trouble," he thought. The Haps don't seem to hate the Yeezies - Drake's apology to Thea was proof of that. Problem was, Preston drivers would choose to work with Chadwick drivers only in the direst of circumstances.

Ricky Lee put up the fourth best time among the unchartered folks, twenty-fifth overall. However, his fortunes in qualifying didn't translate into trying to pick up chicks. Not even playing the "I'm a Multiversal Cup Series driver" card helped - he still didn't have many fans outside St. Kanye, where he was born, and North China, where his team was based. "Maybe if I did a little better in races?" Ricky thought to himself as he walked back to the Beiyang garage. "Yeah, that could be it. I could even get my charter back soon enough." A couple of ladies passed him, one wearing a black cap with Shigeru Ishikawa's #40 on it, and the other in a custom printed "I ♡ CHRIS HOLMES" shirt. "Chicks dig charters, it seems." He saw his teammate Gongming Gao with a blonde bimbo clinging to his arm. "Even Gao is proof of that, even if his taste appears to be different from mine."

This blog was written by Derrick Carlisle, Jaguar Racing's Social Media Manager

After a testing test event that even makes the alliteration a bit weary in my humble mind, there was certainly some interest around the Jaguar Racing camp as we prepared for the first proper weekend of NSSCRA 11 here at Tundra Falls in sunny Newmanistan. Harpa Gylfisdóttir (@IsfruinJR) herself certainly welcomed the new season with open arms but did have a few concerns about the Everlong Contenders gang's ability to perform well in the series as well as getting car #03 up and running in the Multiversal Cup Series as quickly as possible. It was those concerns that would be removed almost instantly as both the Tundra Falls 400 and 500 arrived at the scene...

Let's begin in the 400, where the JR T2 guys put up a valiant response to the DNFs they managed in the Prospect Showcase last week. Robin Dragonovic (@RD97SNL) was not really up there last week but his experience and consistency allowed him to qualify 16th and finish 17th in the first race of his 2nd season. Could've been better, of course, but could've been a lot worse as 5 drivers retired from the first points-paying event. As for the new girl in Alice Jepkosgei (@AJ96), her qualifying pace continued to shine through in 9th and she even managed to finish her first race in a respectable 12th. She certainly has something in the TJUN-ian #96 car and while she may not be up at the level of our top 3 today, she certainly has the potential to do just that. It was another 1-2 today, this time for Vilita and Turori as Turakki Mayelli beat out Lotara Novorali to the first chase spot with Valkyrie Valentijn Samantha Constantine, the driver who took the most wins last season, starting off the campaign in 3rd.

While having two cars in every race guaranteed in the 500 is a nice thing to have, getting three cars in a race would certainly be better for Isfruin - a feat achieved only twice before due to the open charter rules in both S9 (with Novorali) and S10 with Maddison Riley-Jones (@MaddyRJ03), who won a T2 race in order to make a T1 race. Today would be the day, however, that Maddy finally broke through into the Multiversal Cup Series as she managed to qualify for her first race of the season at the first race of the season in 28th, making it in 4th of the 8 non-charter qualifiers and she will start alongside, of all people, Thea Alvarez of GFR fame. It's like Margaret want them to be friends after all and they certainly both had kind words for each other heading into tomorrows proceedings. Wilma von Cärinthen (10th), Kassie Collins (14th), Ricky Lee (25th), Hana Bhe (31st), Lexie Shelby (32nd), Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Ceeta (33rd) and Kelly Monroe (34th) were the other non-charters while the back row will consist of the open-charters in local Derek Harwood (45th) and Rusty Ibuna of Filindostan (46th).

As for the boys, well it certainly was interesting indeed for both Micheal Stefan (@Stefan07) and Alfonso Mercado (@AM64) with car #07 qualifying behind car #03 in 30th while car #64 was the best of the TJUN-ian contingent in 16th. Charter Mercado is certainly an untamed beast, of course, but Stefan down that back is certainly a surprise. Rinzi Aogar Zakhilwal was another surprise as he took the first pole of the season over Exhibition winner Drake Stevenson and Yraaga Gilli'i with defending champion Anastasia Freya Yadana Aye in 24th and Jeremiah Brooke down all the way in 37th.

Speaking of Stevenson, I would personally like to apologise to him in advance, but he will now be the first entry of a new series I like to call...MEMEWATCH! MemeWatch, the sequel to the one-time-only ByrdWatch from NSSCRA 9, is a list that I will personally keep which showcases stories throughout the season that may not look good in the long run if things go awry. "Mr Hapilopper", as I like to call him now, kicks off the entire list for one specific reason: acting like the old Chris Holmes in the presence of the new Chris Holmes...actually, that a lie. It's actually down as "For essentially asking Margaret to smite him down with all her might" as his great impersonation of the Hapiloppan psyche was very much cocky and very much just him asking the gods to send him down a path filled with retirements and pain. I know Hapilopper as a nation is one with a particular expectation about its drivers and sports stars but when you're acting like that, it's almost too easy to mock you when things go wrong, mate. Just make sure you aren't on here more than once, else you yourself will certainly have to...Get Good.
(Why the fuck am I like this?)

Whatever gremlins were troubling both Rustam Yudin and Agata Kosaryova during the Everlong Exhibition Race had stuck around with them a week later. The engineers had already done everything they could short of actually tearing down their engines to check for whatever it is that could have been responsible for the “loss” of horsepower that both drivers reported throughout the Exhibition race, but they simply found nothing out of the ordinary. So they cleared both drivers to race on Saturday and, to the surprise of nobody, both UrGa cars still qualified closer to the back of the field than they were to the front. The team gave orders for Yudin and Kosaryova to give each other drafts in order to keep up with the lead pack, but even that was just not enough. Both Rustam and Agata ended up bringing up the back of the field more laps than the team would care to count, and even numerous changes to the wedge could not get them any further up than 26th. And then as the Tundra Falls 400 entered its closing laps, Yudin started reporting that his temperatures were increasing.

“I don’t get it, I really don’t get it,” Yudin called out. “How much tape do we have on here?”

“We’re down to forty percent on the tape already,” replied his crew chief. “We could take it down to thirty-five percent but that could affect the aero and slow you down even more.”

“I don’t care about the speed anymore! We’re already slow enough as it is,” Rustam exclaimed. “I just need this thing to cool down—” Before he could finish his sentence though, the interior of his Luxur Byzant was suddenly engulfed in white smoke, and more of the same smoke started trailing out of his exhaust. “Fuck!” Yudin shouted.

“Stay calm, Rustam, we got this,” his spotter assured. “Just take it slow and easy into the pit lane. Good thing you blew your engine in Turn 4 or else we’re screwed.”

“You and I have very different ideas for what is a good thing then,” Yudin muttered. Thus ended Rustam Ilyich Yudin’s first race in the second season of the Everlong Series, in a big puff of white smoke and a wrecked engine. His teammate Agata Kosaryova was barely able to get a nose in front of hometown driver Dwight Webster to ensure that she did not finish dead last out of all the surviving runners. The UrGa Everlong team would have their work cut out for them in finding the gremlins troubling their engines, and then they still didn’t know if this only affected their superspeedway cars or if there was a deficiency across all of their equipment.

It would also appear that Guillermo Archer was still stuck with the same gremlins that had afflicted him during the Exhibition weekend, which forced him to start in the middle of the pack and then fall backwards before his race was ended early just forty laps in. This time though, it was clear that all the problems lay squarely in Gil’s car. His teammates Wilma von Cärinthen and Dinggu Wang were both able to qualify within the top 15, with Wilma herself actually breaking into the top 10. Meanwhile, the best that Gil could muster was 22nd place, a slight improvement over P25 from last week but still a disappointment to the whole team, especially since he wouldn’t be able to start near his teammates and assist them into moving further up the field.

Gil considered tweaking his setup for the race on Sunday but thought better of it. This was the best setup that he had found for himself way back in Season 9, back in the days when he was starting in effect P42 in a much larger field of competitors. Back then, starting in 42nd place was also a disappointment, but it was also understandable from UrGa’s perspective because that was literally the first time that they were participating in NSSCRA, and there was just no way that they would have been able to come up with a machine that would make them instant contenders for the top 20 spots. But this time, it was a different story. UrGa already had two seasons of NSSCRA under its belt, and the team had had a year to work upon their Byzant challenger. The team had obviously done something right with both Wang and Wilma’s cars, so what in the world was wrong with Gil’s car then?

“We’ve done every examination possible of the engine short of literally tearing it down and looking at every single nut and bolt and valve and ring there is in there,” reported Konstantin Zakharovich Rezansov, chief engineer of the entirety of the Urotovsky-Gatutin Motorsports Division. Rezansov was more familiar with the workings and engineering of a grand prix-style open-wheeler racecar, but while the UrGa factory for WGP2 was shut down for the offseason, he had offered his services to the Stock Car Department in order to give them a further boost coming into their third season of NSSCRA. But even he was stumped by the mysterious “loss of power” that three out of the five drivers of the team were reporting. “Apart from some wear and tear from the forty-three laps that it was able to run and a few dents and scratches following that collision with Bart Wheeler,” Rezansov continued, “there is nothing at all in that engine that I could conclusively point to as the reason why Mr. Archer feels like he has lost power.”

“Funny that you should mention Wheeler, Kon,” Gil said. Even though Rezansov had a nickname of his own (which was Kostya), Archer had taken to calling him “Kon” because “it was much easier on the tongue”, according to him. “When I came out of Turn 4, Wheeler was, like, three or four-tenths behind me. But then once I started the turn into Turn 1, he was suddenly right beside me! He must have got there so fast that even freaking Ricky couldn’t tell me about him.” “Ricky” was Ricky Tomas, Gil’s spotter. “Do you have any idea how he could have made up that time to me so quickly?”

"I can think of at least a hundred different reasons," Rezansov muttered. "Look, Gil, I know exactly what you're trying to get at here. You're not going to get a lot of people on your side with that, especially not after you went all in on the Valentian cheating conspiracy theory last season. Hell man, you even had Jeremiah freaking Brooke himself correct you about the fact that he got five wins in a season. You said it yourself; you feel as if you're losing speed and power in your car. The problem's in your car, not with someone who dive-bombed you." Rezansov then took a deep breath and a few moments to compose himself, and then he continued, "We will go over your car again later tonight, Gil. Now that doesn't mean that your car will be automatically and magically fixed tomorrow. All that means is that we're going to look at other places other than the engine itself which could explain this power loss you're describing."

Gil nodded his head and stood up. "You're the engineer, Comrade Engineer," he said, and then he left.

"P8, P8 at the moment", a excicted Hayley York said to Kassie Collins as her qualifying time flashed on the timing board. "That's the way to start off a weekend!", Collins said, just as excited as her crew chief. At this moment last season, Collins was packing up after a frustrating week at Tundra Falls that culminated in her missing both the exhibition race and Tundra Falls 500. Now she was coming off of a 14th place run in last weekend's exhibition and was squarely in the show. Now it was a matter of waiting for the rest of the field to qualify.

Birdstrike!

Postby Hapilopper » Wed Jul 14, 2021 9:44 pm

(OOC: The bird incident is based off Dale Earnhardt's seagull incident early in the 1991 Daytona 500. Here's a story about it, rather than a video, since I don't think y'all want to see a video of a race car massacring a seagull.)

Tundra Falls Proving Grounds, Tundra Falls, Newmanistan
The Tundra Falls 500
It had finally hit him. The most turbulent year and a half of his life had finally culminated in something good. The last time Chris Holmes had been in a Team Blue race car on race day, it was in TJUN-ia, and things weren’t going well for him, to say the very least. A few days later, he would be out of a job, and trying to find a way to make it in this world. The next year was even worse, but at the same time, so much better.

Chris thought about that last year and a half as he sat in his car on the starting grid for the Tundra Falls 500. The ill-fated move to Wreckeria and the horrors he saw there. The unceremonious firing by Scott Hawking. The move back to Buckridge and his job at the Mel’s Warehouse. Angela. The weight loss. Sobriety. The sudden call to come back. It was all rushing back as he sat inside his car. He looked over to see Lawrence Malloy and Angela Parker, his girlfriend, chatting on the pit wall.

Chris had no idea Angela had come to Newmanistan. He had heard that her job as a barista at King Bros. Coffee in Hapilopper City had kept her from flying over. He had no idea that Team Blue had secretly flown her over to Newmanistan, at the request of Amanda McAlister and Drake Stevenson. Seeing her at the track was enough for him to start to lose it emotionally. He couldn’t help it. Tears streamed down his eyes. The team was really going to bat for him. They knew how important it was for a significant other to be there for a driver. It was Angela’s first time ever at a race, and she was amazed by what she was seeing.

After all, she hadn’t grown up a racing fan. Her family wasn’t that interested in racing. She had just figured racing was those drunk idiots that go around in circles for 500 miles and fight each other after the race. She couldn’t believe how… sophisticated everything was. These weren’t a bunch of backwoods hicks, these were finely tuned athletes at the peak of their game. These were people who were parts of highly sophisticated organizations. The Team Blue Center was one of the most sophisticated facilities she had ever seen, and the breakfast at the Center was one of the best meals she had ever had. This wasn’t what she had thought racing was.

Chris looked back to the inside of his car. The new digital dashboard inside the Team Blue cars that displayed everything from RPMs, oil pressure, oil temperature, water pressure and temperature, battery volts, and many other items. Next to it was a note, taped to the digital dash, that read “THINK! Don’t be a dumbass!”

Lawrence Malloy had written the note and secretly taped it next to the dash. It wasn’t anything derogatory, but rather a reminder to use your head and not do anything stupid on the race track. Chris didn’t have an issue with the note, but, instead, welcomed it. He knew it was a reminder to watch yourself on the race track.

And he looked at that note a few times as he warmed the tires up during the pace laps. He looked at it again as the green flag came out, starting his first NSSCRA race in a year and a half. The goal was very simple. Be smart. Be intelligent. But be quick, and get up front.

The thing about superspeedway racing in the NSSCRA is that you had to have a drafting partner to get up front. Luckily, Chris had two willing partners up front – Drake Stevenson and Taylor Henderson, both of whom were jockeying up near the front of the field. And all seemed like it was going to go the same way of the exhibition, until, all of a sudden, as Drake Stevenson pulled out front, drivers in the lead pack could see some feathers flying through the air from the left-front fender of the 81 car.

Image

John Malloy got the message over team radio and motioned to Darius Buford, a pit reporter for the Hapilopper Television Network, asking that a message be sent to the production truck to check for a replay to see if Drake hit something. And sure enough, a bird flew in Drake’s path, damaging the left-front fender of the car. It cost Drake the lead, and when he came down for a pit stop, it took the team a long time to fix the fender, dropping him to the back of the field.

Image

While Drake moved back up front midway through the race, showing off just how strong the Team Blue superspeedway package was, he never quite recovered from the bird incident and fell to 20th by the end of the race.

But Chris stayed up there all race, contending with the lead pack. There was something that felt therapeutic about this race. This is what he had needed for a year and a half. Not the forklift. He needed to be in this car. He needed to hear the spotter guiding him around the track, letting him know who to follow, who to draft with, and when to pass. And when he took the flag 7th, it felt as much like a victory as anything else. There was no way he could have gotten this with the Hawking-Byrd team.

It was such a great start for his season. And so, after the race, on pit road, while Drake was looking over that left-front fender, seeing some feathers still on the cowling of the car, Chris was climbing out of the car, looking around at his surroundings. He was home. He was where he belonged, competing against the best racing drivers in the world. He sat on the window of his car for a long time, thinking about how he had finally made it home. And it felt so good.

When Darius Buford came up to him to interview him post-race for the fans back home in Hapilopper (and in Wreckeria), Chris looked back towards him.

“Well, we’ve got the returning Chris Holmes, 7th place here in your first race back, certainly you’ve got to be happy with that,” Darius said.

“I’m home,” Chris said with a huge smile on his face. “We’re gonna win races this year.”

Tundra Falls Proving Grounds, Tundra Falls, Newmanistan
Last lap of the Tundra Falls 500

Shaun Pitt, SKYNET Sports 12 commentator: White flag, brought to you by Kratos White Chocolate. Michael Stefan in that orange 07 on the outside, couple of fellow Dart drivers behind him. And on the inside, St. Kanye's own Jeremiah Brooke in the number 18 Chadwick, two Evelines lined up behind him.
Carl Tanner: Brooke looking for his first Tundra Falls 500 win. Runner-up in the ninth season, his championship season. Won twice at this track though, but that's in the finale, not the opener.
SP: Yeah, one of those is in the ninth season. And who finished third there? Stefan himself, he's looking to top that today.
CT: In fact, all of our current top six has a podium here, as you can see on your screen:

[graphic below shows up on screen for a few seconds, then back to view of the race]

Image

CT: Brooke ahead of Stefan through turn one, Aye looking to pass, but nope.

[in-car camera view of Brooke's car shows up on screen]

Jeremiah Brooke: Got my hands real full, man. Trying to hold off the Darts.
Ben Warwick, #18 crew chief (on radio): Just keep at it.
JB: And the Vals might be trying something as well. Man, this is tough.
BW: You can do it. I believe in you.

[back to view of the race]

SP: Alvarez passes Rinzi, now working on Archer, trying to get herself a top ten. Qiang and Li, side by side fighting for eighth.
CT: Stefan inches ahead, Darts still in tow as they go through turn three.
SP: Brooke with a push. Aye tries to pass again, fails again, here we go....
CT: Turn four. Holmes looking for an opening, trying to break into the top six.
SP: Brooke ahead. No, Stefan ahead.
CT: Contact! 18 and 07!
SP: They touch coming to the checkered flag!
CT: Who will it be? It's gonna be close....
SP: Michael Stefan wins at Tundra Falls!

Image

CT: Third career victory for the TJUN-ian. Second second place for Brooke in the season opener.
SP: Well, third, if you count the Exhibition in the ninth season too.
CT: Tiones third. Samantha fourth, Aye fifth, Shark sixth.
SP: Holmes seventh in his return to Team Blue.
CT: Eighth is Liangmei Li by a nose over Kai Qiang, and YG completes our top ten.
SP: We'll take a break.

Jeremiah Brooke survived his 37th place start at the 500, finding his way to the front quickly with the help of teammate Thea Alvarez. He ran no worse than sixteenth, except during pit cycles, and led 79 of the race's 143 laps. However, he was unable to seal the deal against the much younger Michael Stefan. Jeremiah visited Michael in victory lane after the race, giving him a fist bump and saying, "Sup, Micky (his preferred nickname). Tough battle, wasn't it? But hey, it was fun, at least for me. Congrats, man! Here's to more of those battles!" Unlike Thea last week, Jeremiah allowed reporters to interview him. "The #18 Hyde Ride ran well today. Didn't get the dub, but we were close. Still, a nice high result to start the season off well. Hopefully we could get it done one of these weeks so we could make the Chase," he said.

Thea also spent time in the lead pack, and was in the top ten by lap 25. However, she had to spend time in the pits in the middle of the race as she damaged the right front of her #46 machine trying to avoid Eiji Ibi's disabled #00. She then climbed back, even battling Jeremiah for first place late, but got shuffled out of position and ultimately ended up eleventh with thirteen laps led.

Image

"Not bad, but definitely could have done better. On to Xanneria, I guess," Thea said of her performance. One reporter asked how things between her and Drake Stevenson are going now after what happened between them at the end of last week's Exhibition. "We're good. He apologized. I'm glad that he did - I value our friendship. I mean, we and the Haps, we're fierce rivals on the track, but off it, I like to say that we're very close."

Sage Caldwell finished twenty-fifth, sandwiched between the two UrGa entries of Wilma von Cärinthen and Dinggu Wang. Despite starting fourth, he never led, and in fact even lost laps due to running out of fuel with less than forty to go.

Image

"At least it wasn't a DNF, unlike last season," he said during the post-race presser. "But the fact remains, we were mediocre out there. Not what you wanna see if you wanna go for a win and a Chase spot like I am. We gotta get good."

"Like the oil?"

"Hell nah, homie. Argoil for life!"

Kai Qiang was talking to a couple of guys from his crew, partly talking shop to prepare for the Tundra Falls 500, partly just chit chat about this and that. In the background, a few cars were driving practice laps and there were various people milling about.

Qiang had lost track of what Kami was up to, since he was absorbed in the conversation. Kami quickly got bored as she had no idea what the grown-ups were talking about, so she began exploring her surroundings, and she made a fascinating discovery: a tire rack stocked with Highland tires. She let out a delighted squeal as she discovered that she could roll the tires off the rack. Qiang turned around to see what she was so excited about, and immediately rushed over to stop her before she could roll any tires into traffic.

Image

"You're going to get me fined!" Qiang muttered angrily as he carried Kami away from the garage area. He left her with Tsering's dad, and returned his team.

Qiang was the slowest of the Sherpalanders in qualifying, placed 23rd while Rinzi took the pole and Tsering was 5th. He was a little embarrassed to turn in such a mediocre lap, especially since he had been much faster the week before. It was a good reminder not to let his guard down.

On the day of the race, Qiang made the mistake of bringing his kids to breakfast. Qiang always had breakfast with his crew chief the morning before a race, so they could go over their plans one last time and make sure they were both on the same page. That was easier when Kami wasn't throwing sausage links across the table. "She takes after her mother," Qiang explained apologetically after a sausage landed in his crew chief's lap.

"I noticed," Chang replied. He glanced at Sima, who was popping a tater tot in her mouth -- except she wasn't very coordinated and it took her a couple of tries to actually get it in her mouth. "Do you think next week, you could leave the kids with Tsering or her dad on the morning before the race? They're cute and all, but..." Chang gestured at Kami, who was trying to get her father's attention by smearing her syrupy fingers across his cheek.

"Yeah," said Qiang. He brushed Kami's hand away from his face and wiped off the syrup with a napkin.

Despite the distractions, Qiang had a pretty good race. He finished 9th and he might have finished even higher if he hadn't gotten dragged into a shoving match with Liangmei Li in the last few laps.

After a very interesting qualifying session yesterday in the Multiversal Cup Series, everyone over at Jaguar Racing was certainly very intrigued as to how the Tundra Falls 500 itself will go considering where all 3 of our drivers ended up. Looking at the grid (with #64 in 16th, #03 in 28th and #07 in 30th) and where everyone was, don't think even Harpa Gylfisdóttir (@IsfruinJR) herself would've seen the eventual results falling as they did.

Let's start with Maddison Riley-Jones (@MaddyRJ03), who was starting her first race of the season in 28th and on the same row as her good friend Thea Alvarez. While the Yeezie did bounce back to finish 11th, Maddy's first proper T1 race wasn't that inspiring overall but she did get some action in, going up to as high as 23rd at one point. Finishing 33rd in your debut race is certainly a good start, showing she does have room for improvement as the 5th best non-charter of the day. Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Ceeta was the best in 18th with Hana Bhe (19th), Ricky Lee (23rd) and Wilma von Cärinthen (24th) ahead of Maddy on the road while Lexie Shelby (34th) and Kelly Monroe (38th) were behind. Kassie Collins DNFed today with 6 other drivers, including Gongming Gao and Rockii Ezis. Local OC Derek Harwood was also a victim while Rusty Ibuna ended up 37th.

Alfonso Mercado (@AM64) meanwhile was the best of TJUN-ia on Saturday with his 16th place in Qualifying, but his race today was more akin to what his boyfriend usually goes through: a rollercoaster. He was consistently within the To[ 20 for most of this race before an unexpected puncture sent him all the way back to 35th. The rest of the race was spent recovering as much ground as possible and he would certainly do that with 21st at the line. He certainly showed his credentials today and on any other day, his drive would be considered JR's best of the day - but then his boyfriend happened. Like REALLY happened.

Michael Stefan (@Stefan07) started down in 30th, a position he isn't really used to at this point and he was certainly hungry for more by the time the green flag came today. To say he took every chance he got was a complete understatement as he and fellow straggler Jeremiah Brooke shot up the field to the Top 5 almost instantly and from there, he was certainly up near the top. He was down in 12th by the time the final part of the race arrived but using the tow of his fellow Dart cars from Vilita and Turori, he managed to barge his way towards the front to set up a duel with Brooke himself as the race reached the white flag. Things were very tight at the line, so much so that a photo finish was required, but in the end, our man Micky took the first spot in this season's Chase by only 0.005 on the clock. It's those margins you deal with day-to-day in this sport and there certainly was a delayed reaction within the car.
Tomas von Brandenburg: Chequered Flag, Chequered Flag! A brilliant performance overall, Kumpel! Just need to verify the results as it looks like a photo finish between you and Brooke.
MS: Understood, I can wait. I'm happy anyway no matter what.
TvB: That's great to hear. Results just came back and that's a win, baby, and by 5-thousands at that! Brilliant drive out there and welcome back to the Chase!
MS: HAHAHAHAHA! OHHHHHH, ICH LIEBE ES! ICH LIEBE ES! Danke! Danke! Wow...I can't believe I did a Maddy!
TvB: Indeed you did, my friend, indeed you did!

Pleasantries were shared between Micky and Brooky afterwards on Victory Lane and the whole JR gang turned out for the occasion as Stefan claimed his 3rd win in 3 seasons and returned to the Chase without even leaving Newmainstani soil. It couldn't have been a better start for JR even if they tried, but many more weeks are to come. Up next is Xannaria with two very different tracks hosting the two races in Galliburton, with Cobin's short track hosting the Everlong's www.visitmarietta.xan 300 while the Cup Series heads out to Marietta for the XANAir 300 at Road Marietta. I've been Derrick Carlisle and while Margaret did deliver retribution to Mr Hapilopper via a holy bird, the long road of NSSCRA 11 is only just beginning! MOTR was chosen by today's winner and considering what it is, I think we all know who this is aimed at...SEE YA!

Despite her team's victory today, they didn't stop her from completing her evening run at all. Alice Jepkosgei's first steps into NSSCRA were certainly very interesting and as the gan all prepared for the flight over to Xanneria, she certainly felt a lot better than she did this time last week. Her qualifying pace has so far been very good when compared to teammate Robin Dragonovic, but her race pace was certainly lacking in the Prospect Showcase and she knew it. She felt a little bit of doubt in herself after that, but she rebounded to end up in 12th after yesterday's proceedings in the Everlong.

Now then, back to running (or "kurudi mbio" in her native Swahili) and she certainly enjoyed pushing her physical limits in this way out of the car, without any "wajinga" in her way at all. She always did this after every race, no matter where she finished or if she even finished at all, and become a bit of a coping ritual away from the drama on the track. She was always good at sending what was right for her, no matter the overall cost, and she always felt that this rhythm and the international racing scene, in general, were made for her to thrive in. Allah made it so.

Suddenly, she stopped. She had a feeling once more, something...weird...something she hasn't felt before. It seemed to be coming from one of the team paddocks, a feeling that could be only described as "fate" perhaps. She couldn't explain it, but some force out there was pulling her towards this building and whatever lay within it. She decided then to note down the name of this team within her mind and then try and move on again, the name rebounding in her head through the rest of her night. Even when she prayed, she thought of this name - a name which made no sense to her as to why it grabbed her attention. Why? Because its name was Beiyang...of all things, Beiyang...

In the Garages acctivity was a flutter, the KRD Team Iona team was unloading their cars after teams were allowed back on the track the Thursday before the . This let their drivers have a chance to snoop around the Garage.

This is Eddie Walters interactions Thursday.

Walters watch the cars unload when he saw another Xannerian flag on top of a hauler. Obviously this peaked his attention as the generic red hauler gave him no clues.

As Eddie walked towards the hauler he saw a lady in a drivers suit with a big white "C" on it. He recognized the face immedeately and when her father came out and joined her he knew exactly who she was.

Kelly Monroe was a 20 year old from the coastal town of Obieport a middle sized town on the eastern Bay of Melbourne, a town that thrived mostly fish and tourism the city was a popular beach destination in the muggy Xannerian summers and a year around destination for people who want to take the ferries over to the Anclaire provinces, but not have to deal with the busier ferry hubs in the Capital or Pearlham. Obieport was also a home of race car driver John Monroe. John had a reputation as one of the most consistent drivers in the sport and his green Scarborough Fair foods cars were well known by fans and drivers alike, for 25 years he plied his trade in XCAR the Domestic Stock Car series in Xanneria, with 15 wins to his belt he wasn't a slouch either. He was known as one of the most passionate drivers in his sport and it clearly was genetic as his 20 year old daughter Kelly had given the sport a try. It was a bit of a unique situation though, with several factors making this a confusing but welcome choice in NSSCRA. Cunningham itself had been long known as the fourth car manufacturer in Xannerian motorsport circles. Very Rarely did you see a series with a large amount of Cunningham's, while the brand was popular they focused mostly on their pet project, the Delano City Sports Club football team. In XCAR there was only three tams running fulltime in XCAR, the factory team and Alex Adlers #65 car. Also Kelly had never run a full season in XCAR, she had never run a season in any of the main Xannerian series in fact....she was a fresh faced 20 year old following her families dream.....

So yes, it was a surprise when Eddie walked up and found the Monroe's in front of the red hauler.

"Kelly? John?"

"Lil Eddy!" shouted back John, and having raced with Eddies dad Ed Sr, you called Walters "Lil Eddy"

"Man, you guys took your operation to the big time." said Eddie assumingly.

"Nah'" retorted John "This is all Kelly's deal, she got in with the Cunningham family in the offseason"

"Really, I thought they cared more about mediocre football than this stuff" replied Eddie being very snarky as he knew him and the Monroe's were all Perlham SC fans, a team that is rival of the Cunnigham owned Delano City SC

"Hah, but we can't really laugh at that now" John said in an obviously jovial mood.

"So hows KRD now, I heard Tucker is back fulltime in Xanneria?" enquired John "Is Roman still there?"

"Yeah Tuckers back home running the flagship XCAR vehicle and no Roman, the lucky bastard got moved over to the new Yorkshire prototype racer" replied Eddie.

The three of them talked a while while things were being set up, as for the two races, the Exhibition race went not quite as smooth as it could have for Eddie, a dropped jack during a pitstop slowed Eddies progress down and eventually he lost a lap in 31st. Kelly barely missed the show.

The Points race at Tundra falls went better. Eddie may have only improved three sports to 28th but he was in the main pack most of the race. a late caution bunched up the field and Eddie like the other 32 cars had a shot, he had the wounded Drake Stevenson behind him but in the end he got shuffled and squeezed into the outside wall and could only manage to watch the finish from the tail end of the pack in 28th.
Kelly made the field qualifying 35th, but on Saturday the young team had it's first hicup, an engine failure forced the team to change engines start at the back and on the start of the race the car directly ahead of her failed to go and she plowed right into the back of him (It turned out the driver ahead had a Transmission issue). While it hurt her car she still finished 39th 5 laps down, a feat 7 others couldn't say they did.

Monroe won't have to worry about qualifying in at the Road Marietta race in two weeks as her team has filed for the Promoters option at the second round of NSSCRA in Xanneria.

The Gardeners – Race 0 – Main Series: Exhibition at The Proving Grounds Presented by Rocket Automotive // Everlong: Prospect Showcase at The Proving Grounds Presented by Rocket Automotive

Image

Holly's dimension is located somewhere in Yangon, Burma, which is now part of Valentine Z. The dimension originated first during the year 2000, subtly hidden in a small garden greenhouse as its lone resident - Holly Starlight - requested the Valentians to keep the dimension off-limits to most visitors, for she wants to be left alone.

With Jolyn in tow, along with her new car made to ensure that it can handle the stress and strain of a new season, Holly looked at the Proving Grounds racetrack, taking in the scenery and was rather happy to be around her friends and simply to prove her own personal worth. She might not be a bonafide driver, and she has not gotten herself a podium finish let alone a win, but she was definitely more than ready to make more impacts and marks on the place. Donning her firesuit almost all the time, Holly has been quite a sensation for the most parts - people have always been curious about her nature, but she always make it so that little to no one outside of Valentine Z knows about her true self. "They will have to know the truth bit by bit, haha!"

With a rough qualification start of 35th, Jolyn deliberately slowed down on the track a little to make sure that her friend is able to catch up with her.

Holly Aurora Lapia Starlight (#55): Hm hm, you don't have to do this, Jolyn!
Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Ceeta (#76): It's all right, it's no trouble at all. Besides, time to practice, yeah? First race, exhibition - no points.
Holly Aurora Lapia Starlight (#55): Ahh, good point. Thanks for doing this for me, let's practice, then!

Holly and Jolyn kept a close distance between each other throughout the race - it does not matter whether Holly or Jolyn is in front, all it matters is for them to streamline off of one another, as well as to make sure that they are not breaking off that easily.

Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Ceeta (#76): How is it so far? Familiar settings, right?
Holly Aurora Lapia Starlight (#55): Yup! Vehicle is a bit difficult to handle, though. Is it new?
Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Ceeta (#76): Yes, new cars. We make sure that the previous vehicles do not give us any problems. I mean, it feels like a waste, but we put them up for an exhibition in our museums, anyway- LEFT SIDE, LEFT SIDE! Holly, watch out!

With quick thinking and orders from Jolyn, Holly saw herself nearly getting hit by #17 or #25. 4 cars went into a DNF, one of them including #96. The Valentians and the Gardeners have absolutely no idea as to what happened, but they are not going to be nosy enough to find out.

Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Ceeta (#76): Is that Archer? In his #96?
Anastasia Freya Yadana Aye (#15): What, is he giving you trouble? Don't take his crap, Jolyn.
Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Ceeta (#76): No, no I'm not. He seems to have DNF'ed.
Anastasia Freya Yadana Aye (#15): Hmph.
Holly Aurora Lapia Starlight (#55): Ohh dear, that was close. Thank you!
Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Ceeta (#76): I'm heading for the pits early. Should get new tires and gas now, it's a bit risky. Good luck!

As the two rejoined and paired up, along with with the help of any other Valentians nearby, the three of them were in unison as they approached the last few laps. Gwen's #31 in front, Holly following in the middle, and Jolyn streamlining off of cars ahead of her.

Klarissa Citron Ashe Tiara Hope Ann “Moeder Natuur” Trista Lynette Evangeline Wenda Vivi. Summer, De Eerste Verpersoonlijking van De Sierlijke und Verwonderlijk Feline Utopia ov Valentine Z (#55, C): 29th for you, Holly. Great work out there, very nice!
Genki Matthieu Lee Zhuān Jiā (#76, C): 32nd! Not very shabby, Jolyn, and hey, no worries. Just an exhibition.
Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Ceeta (#76): Yeah, I know. I'm glad I got qualified, anyway!

There was a bit of a post-race meeting as always for the Valentians. Holly and Jolyn were side by side, with the latter reassuring her light-based friend that she is doing pretty well and that it's going to be all right for them both. "Hey, don't worry too much about it. You did well - plus, like I said, exhibition race. I am repeating myself, I'm so sorry! Anyway, here's to better race results ahead of us! Maybe even a podium finish!

Holly materialized glasses of drinks for everyone in the Valentian garage, commenting "Oh, it's strawberry! I added a bit of fizz, and not a lot of ice cubes! No alcohol, hm hm!" They drank it up and went back to their lounge for R&R before preparing for the next race.

Things were going okay for Beiyang.

And then they weren't.

Gongming Gao was battling Mercado for 14th, but then he started losing power and dropping back. He complained on the radio, and the Beiyang crew scurried around checking their screens trying to figure out what had gone wrong. Before they could do much of anything about it, smoke began billowing out of the car, and they had to call Gao into the pits.

Gao climbed out of the car and tore his helmet off. "What the hell, man?"

Most of the crew were now focused on Ricky Lee, who was still in the race -- but Lijing Deng took a moment to calm Gao down and reassure him that everyone knew it wasn't his fault.

Lee went on to finish 23rd, between Jenna Logan and Wilma von Cärinthen. He was a long way from the front, but it was promising that he was in the thick of it with some well-known drivers. And it was a relief that whatever had gone wrong with Gao's car did not also happen to Lee.

After the race, Gao hit the gym to blow off steam. He tried striking up a conversation with a girl who was training on a treadmill, but it didn't really go anywhere. She didn't seem to know who he was, and it was pretty obvious she just wanted to be left alone and get on with her own workout.

Badai Angin Tim was not a factor at all for the race win in the race at Tundra Falls, mainly due to the subpar qualifying results the organization had where the highest starting position was 20th. The team ran a conservative strategy in the drafting, with the three cars midpack and had been around the 15th to 20th position by 3/5 race distance, however, with barely 390 miles of the race covered, the Badai Angin engine of Rockii Ezis in the #60 expired, blowing up spectacularly and causing a caution, fortunately there were no cars from BA Tim that was further involved, and the pair of Fiona Sunarya and Hana Bhe managed to stay inside the top 20 for the remainder of the race. Rusty Ibuna had a quiet debut for the Rusty Motorsport-prepared Kecepatan, with occasional drafting with fellow Badai Angin-laden #00 of Eiji Ibi, until the Ajian somehow wrecked his car in the middle of the race, ending his day in 42nd place. The current WGPC driver finished the race off the pace from the leaders in 37th, and will probably not return soon until the race at Jakulta at Round 12 of the Multiversal Series.

At the end of the weekend, The two girls, plus Shania Soraya from the Everlong Series program of Rusty Motorsport went sightseeing in a cozy bar in Newmanistan, with the latter just turning 18 some weeks ago, to unwind from a difficult weekend for the teams, and to refresh themselves going into the next race at Xanneria, although the two won't be with the younger Soraya for long as she, along with the other Rusty team members will head to Galliburton for their race while the Multiversal drivers will head to Road Marietta.

Despite the difficult weekend, the team still managed to snag top 20 finishes from their two Filindo drivers, which will be a big boost for their playoff aspirations when the series comes to Jalton Superspeedway for the regular season finale. The engineers at Badai Angin have also taken the engine from Ezis' downed Kecepatan to check whether the failure was caused by something that they could have prevented prior to the race at Tundra Falls. They vow that the three teams will finish the race at Road Marietta next week.

Eiji was ecstatic when he was behind the wheel of an NSSCRA car after four seasons away from the sport. Unlike the one he drove though in season 6, the car was not factory-supported as despite the alliance between Katana Racing and Badai Angin has provisions to have cars built in Aji No Moto, the cars that they are initially using are hand-me-downs from the BA Tim's ninth and tenth season cars, including the ones Hana Bhe and Fiona Sunarya drove at the end of the ninth season, which proved slower than most of the field, and thus cannot keep up with the drafts the main BA Tim cars had. Eiji had to set his expectations lower this season despite placing top 5 in qualifying and finishing inside the top 10 on the same race five seasons ago, due to both his time away and the quality of the car he was driving.

The #00 car stayed in the tandem draft with Rusty Ibuna, the driver of the #71, and toyed around the high 30s to low 40s position on the first 200 miles of the race. At the middle of the race though, he had a miscommunication with Ibuna, causing the front of the #71 to nudge the rear bumper of the #00 car and send the Kecepatan into the wall. Eiji apologized to Ibuna after the race for losing his concentration, as well to Saint Kanye's Thea Alvarez for causing damage to her car in his DNF sequence.

There were reasons to be optimistic though, as the Everlong teams performed strongly in their corresponding race, and Dash and Geru finishing 4th and 6th respectively, well ahead of their Filindostani counterparts from Rusty Motorsport. Their cars though was not as outdated as the Multiversal series team, although they might struggle in the coming races as the effects of having outdated equipment may exhibit in certain tracks.

Although there is no set expectations for Road Marietta, Eiji would hope to improve his results and wait for the arrival of the in-house cars. He kept contact with Chiemi as well as the latter prepares for her #0 entry in the IRACT's TMW 400 race as part of Badai Angin's two entries, the other one being Rusty Ibuna in his #71. He also told her that he will see her personally in a few weeks when the NSSCRA paddock pays a visit to Sankyoku.

Vasal-Jhai, Part 2

"Are you sure of the intel you hold?" asked Lilith an hour into their meeting. Nezera could understand the uncertainty - Vasal-Jhai was something that only happened once so often, and it had been used to fool Yesopaliithans in the past.

"Orders come from the very top," answered Nezera, "Nirdasil told me so herself."

"How is racing in some vehicles going to help us solve it?" stated Celeste incredulously, "We need to devote manpower and hours into finding the source, right?"

"Don't you know of the situation in Freedom's Altar? All this talk about who was representing us in sporting events has taken a toll. Half of Yesopalitha wants us to kick all the humans out, half of us think we should return to the way things were. What would the country think if it knew that Vasal-Jhai was coming to pass? So many would think of it as the herald of change leading to war, while others would want us to become isolationist altogether. Nirdasil doesn't want either. She wants us to figure out if it's just a sign of things to come or if it's come already. I have the ability to test the atmosphere everywhere we land, and then we have skills to verify whether Vasal-Jhai is happening in the places that we visit. With enough data points, we will be able to figure it out."

"Do you really think four Vampires can stop Vasal-Jhai?" asked Velorina.

"We don't have a choice. We have to try," replied Nezera.

The four Vampires spent the rest of the night talking about the role that they would all have to play. It would take all four of them to get stuff done.

Kami Qiang was not allowed anywhere near the garage at Road Marietta. Her parents had learned not to trust her around tires, cars, machinery, etc. This didn't stop her from begging for a sip of a local man's whiskey, which she kept calling "juice" because she didn't understand what whiskey was. Thankfully, the man refused to share. After a while her grandfather gave her an actual juice box, which she happily drank and forgot about the whiskey.

When her father found out what she'd been up to he joked, "Really? You don't want to talk to that guy, Kami. You'll learn English with a Xannerian accent!"

Then Tsering came over from her hauler, and it was all hugs and sign-language.

Qualifying went well enough for the Sherpalanders with Qiang starting 4th, Rinzi 13th, and Tsering 16th.

Meanwhile back home in the Sherpa Empire, TMW was making their final preparations for the festivities at Ramba, and Yi Tan was arguing with IRACT about a penalty he had received several weeks earlier. Tan had been penalized for speeding on the pit road in Chengdu, part of the spring season that IRACT used to assign their NSSCRA charter. He was of the opinion that the penalty had been unfair, and that it was the reason why Rinzi Zakhilwal had beaten him by two points to win IRACT's NSSCRA charter.

IRACT officials had reviewed all the tapes and data they had and explained to Tan that he was the only one who got a speeding penalty because he was the only one that drove so fast on the pit lane. Tan was still pissed off. He had been making a stink about it, too.

When a reporter asked Rinzi if he had any comment on the controversy, Rinzi brushed it off. "He's a young hothead, you know? Haha, I think he just needs to grow up."

The Valentians – Race 1 – Main Series: Tundra Falls 500, Tundra Falls Proving Grounds, Newmanistan (Superspeedway) // Everlong: Tundra Falls 400, Tundra Falls Proving Grounds, Newmanistan (Superspeedway)

Image

The Valentians have always been careful not to get too much fame and popularity in any field, especially in the fields of international sports. With fame from winnings and good driving, still comes a great deal of scrutiny, not from any specific outlet alone, but from all walks of life. That is perhaps the reason why after a terrible stunt in NSSCRA 8, the Valentians have made it known not to try anything outlandish, and certainly only to do their very best as intended - enjoy the thrill of racing, and the spoils of winning as a secondary effect. NSSCRA 10 has already seen them getting accused of illegal modifications or cheating, to which it was a tad understandable only because most of the people outside of Valentine Z might not have any idea of the kind of technology that the Valentians have. "Let us try to finish this season with as little drama as we can," Valentijn gave a remark during the briefing before the practice and the qualification that follows, "I know, I felt like I am going to jinx it, but truth be told, let's try out best, all right? You don't have to win consecutively, though that would be nice, heh heh. Take care of yourselves first."

The qualifications were painfully average for the Valentians - Apart from Jolyn who was in 33rd, everyone was between 20th to 29th. "Hmm, definitely could be better," Anastasia remarked, holding off further comments to see how well she does on the actual race. In the meantime, Everlong sees Valentijn getting her first ever podium finish of the season, placing 3rd and right behind two drivers from Vilita & Turori. It was perhaps their teamwork that has impressed her, though Valentijn has nothing but praise for her own best friend. "Marcus is still doing his best, and I believe in him," she said, with her best friend sitting on her right hand, "We all have to start somewhere and I mean, this is still the very first race, so we have a lot of opportunities to do the bumper drafting and helping each out as best as we can." Marcus nodded and gave Valentijn's a thumb a high-five, the two then going back to their living quarters and enjoying their R&R. The two enjoyed their company as much as Valentijn does with Clarissa - she made it a point to balance her life with her wife, her best friend, and many other Valentians, Sixty or otherwise.

The race for the Main Series Valentians would see Clarissa and Anastasia back to back each other for most of the race, eventually finishing 4th and 5th as a result of them sticking together to the best of their abilities. Anastasia even managed to be the leader for a handful of laps, but eventually had her own fair share of falters or pit stops that cost her precious time. Gwen was also joining them for a good while, until she wasn't, a result of the 3rd segment that saw her losing a lot of time and getting caught up with the 2 DNFs. Certainly not running out of options, she paired up with #76 Jolyn from the second Valentian team - two of them finished 17th and 18th.

Clarissa Alanis Star Samantha (#7): Ohh yes, that was amazing! Wow, we actually made it pretty far in front, and that was from our teamwork!
Anastasia Freya Yadana Aye (#15): We certainly did, Clarissa! Aye, sorry about the race today though, Gwen! There's always next time!
Gwen Tracer Allison Oxton (#31): Haha, well that just happened, really. I mean, I did pretty well and was maintaining good placements for most of the laps, but man, that second segment screwed me up.
Anastasia Freya Yadana Aye (#15): Difficult once you are leading and there is no one behind you. All the air resistance is on you... at least, that is what I think from the fundamental of physics that you guys made me read, haha!
Gwen Tracer Allison Oxton (#31): We definitely can team up more for the next race! Though of course, we will need close qualification gaps like this one.
Clarissa Alanis Star Samantha (#7): We did a lot of teamwork today too! It's normal to mistakes, don't worry. I made them too, haha!

The Valentians wrapped up their day with celebrating once again for Valentijn's podium finish, as well as for Clarissa and Anastasia's finishes in the Main Series. As for Gwen, Jolyn, Holly, and Marcus, they have been reassured and were still confident that they will be able to get through with this. After all, this is only the very first race and it would have been unwise to start dreading and give up this early. "More times on the simulation for everyone, hehe. Ahh, don't worry, I won't push you all like I did in World Cup. NSSCRA is still physically demanding, but it is more of an endurance thing. You don't need to run, you just need to make sure that the car's heat won't fried your brains."

The Gardeners – Race 1 – Main Series: Tundra Falls 500, Tundra Falls Proving Grounds, Newmanistan (Superspeedway) // Everlong: Tundra Falls 400, Tundra Falls Proving Grounds, Newmanistan (Superspeedway)

Image

At only 400 square meters from outside, Holly's home is certainly very small from the outside. A few blue trees here and there, lights that looked as if someone was hosting a rave in there, and many more to follow. It looks like an extravagant greenhouse from the outside, but for those that stepped inside with approval from Holly Starlight herself, one would certainly feel extremely cold due to the temperatures, followed by being mesmerized by the sheer scale of the hidden fantasy world that Holly did not exactly intend everyone to know about...

From ending up in the last few placements for both qualification and races - at times with Jolyn not being able to be qualified inside - to doing on par (or even better at times) compared to the main Valentians, Holly Starlight and Jolyn Caulfield have definitely been proud to show their own set of skills - with the latter recapturing the victories and her exceptional performance that she once used to have in NSSCRA 8. With a qualification of 29th and 33rd to boot, both the Gardeners were not worried about losing it out to the other drivers, at least not this early. They might have to work their way through a thick barricade of cars, but once again, they relied on their own teamwork and drafting.

Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Ceeta (#76): Let's try not to be very picky this time, Holly. If you can't be in front of me, just go ahead and streamline behind me! Otherwise, you are free to be in front, and then I will bumper draft you.
Holly Aurora Lapia Starlight (#55): I understand, thanks, Jolyn!
Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Ceeta (#76): Okay, let's do this. Don't worry, this is still the first race, there is definitely a lot of room for errors. Don't overexert yourself.

For a good while, the two drivers have been staying back to back with each other, often times just right beside each other, or front and back of one another. Even if they got separated by the other drivers, it would only be in the span of 5-6 drivers at most, being able to close the gap rather quickly as Holly and Jolyn both showed their teamwork. They might not be able to win races or get podium finishes just yet, but they were certainly able to be consistent throughout the race. That is, until on the 5th segment whereby Holly found herself nearly skidding off and having to make a quick pit-stop.

Holly Aurora Lapia Starlight (#55): Oh goodness me, I turned way too much. I should have just braked more.
Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Ceeta (#76): Hey, like I said, don't worry about it, Holly. You can come back, I believe in you. Mistakes happen, I am just glad you are fine.
Tracie Valentina Kat Hyvärinen (#55, C): No problem, Holly - you will be back on the track in no time. You didn't crash this time, you are doing great!
Genki Matthieu Lee Zhuān Jiā (#76, C): Jolyn, see if you can try to join up with Gwen.
Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Ceeta (#76): I'm not sure if I can catch up with her, she is pretty far in-front.
Gwen Tracer Allison Oxton (#31): Haha, unfortunately nope! Was in Top 10, but faltered a little. Not too bad though, I will be happy if I don't fall beyond 20. No offense, Holly!
Holly Aurora Lapia Starlight (#55): Hm hm, it's all right, there's always the next one!

With Holly not being able to catch up back to Jolyn, the former then decided to streamline behind the other drivers, trying her best to regain back the positions that she has lost. She eventually made it back to a decent 29th at the end of the race. In the meantime, Jolyn and Gwen paired up with each other, with Gwen being bumped behind by Jolyn who was already at the back. The duo finished with 17th and 19th respectively. Looking from the perspective of the Gardeners, it would be Holly who placed herself 29th and getting 18 points, with Jolyn doing the vice versa - that is, 18th spot with 29 points. "Quite a coincidence, haha!" Holly laughed it off, the mistake she made in the race not bothering her that much compared to the attitude that she had in the previous season; perhaps she was learning that flaws, fumbles, and even crashes are parts and parcels of life. She simple needs to make sure that she is not doing this too frequently, lest she either DNFed way too many times, or worse, hit someone and cause a rivalry.

Welcome back everyone, it's To The Max. Hapilopper's Drake Stevenson may have won a thriller of an Exhibition at the Proving Grounds in Newmanistan over St. Kanye's Thea Alvarez, but at what cost? First, fifteen grand, NSD, for his words and actions during the post-race, and then yesterday at the 500, same track, hits a bird, thankfully not one of the Cocoabos still in the series. Not only did it ruin his chance of a higher finish than the twentieth he had to settle with, it turned him into a meme in good old TJUN-ia. Well, as if he wasn't already one after that presser last week.....

[remixed version of Drake's statement created by some Yeezie memelord plays, censored of course]

Get Good, mother[BLEEP]ers! G-G-G-Get Good, mother-mother- Get Good, m-m-m-m-[BLEEP]

[music gets cut off]

You get the point. But enough about poor Draky, he's been through enough already. Next weekend, the NSSCRA moves on to Xanneria. Whoa, whoa, what happened to N-N-Dubs, you might ask? New Northwesteros, why is it not on the schedule? To those living under a rock this past offseason, Direwolf Auto Team made the shift to AOCAR, so naturally, Lannisburg Complex management decided to follow suit. So where do we go now to get our tires tortured? Oxyrhynchus Ring in Abanhfleft, that's where. But not until next month or so. Like I said, Xanneria, that will be the place for the second points race of both the Multiversal and Everlong series.

Open charter number one for the Multiversal race at Road Marietta goes to the local Kelly Monroe of the Cunningham factory team. Alright, nothing wrong with that, let the kid not worry about quals in her home race. But remember, we have two open charters now. You know who would have been great for the other one? Any clues? Roman Gwinnett. AKA, the guy who gave Xanneria their first, and to date only NSSCRA win. I mean, would have been a good comeback for him. I still think Roman, the "Golden Boy" as they call him, unfairly lost his ride. Kid's got potential, I feel like he just needed better equipment to make a splash. Oh well, at least he's found a home in the prototype series, hope he's doing well over there.

And while we're still on the topic of open charters, I want to announce to all of you that I, Max Gannon, will once again attempt to make an NSSCRA field as I sign up for the TMW 400 in Sherpaland. The Friendship 420 or whatever was fun and all, but it ended for me while I was still having fun. Hopefully I make it into the field again and actually make it to the end in one piece this time around. Ramba Test Track is the place to be, next Friday that is. Look for the black and yellow Chadwick Infinite. Number 69 or 99 or 999, whichever's available. My good friend and team co-owner Skip Stiller won't be participating in this one, but we will see GFR's AOCAR drivers get a little bit of practice before their own series kicks off. And we also could have some other Chads in the field, what with Direwolf's Tyler Linde now full-time in IRACT, and my sources even tell me that some of the locals were able to get their hands on last season's models, for cheap.

Moving on to other series, the World Stage Rally Championship, Dub-S-R-C, kicked off its inaugural season just recently, if you guys feel like watching something in between of NSSCRA weekends. Have you seen those Ensadrink cars from Hodori? Things of beauty, those ones. Same goes with the Aurunan Schkeska cars.... [Gannon makes kissing noise] Familiar names in the roster - well, we got Sara Luna of WGPC fame, as well as Franklin Egar, one-time NSSCRA participant, rocking the #18 like Jeremiah Brooke.
