Following Janne Laukkanen through the field as he sliced through it was considerably easier than he thought it would be, with Ted feeling just a twinge of guilt when he passed Anola. She was, after all, the lead driver. But the road-block would come when Janne overtook Joy Wingelaar, and Ted was just...stuck behind her. Try as he might, the tricky driver just kept getting the better of him. No points, but at least he'd be near the front for the sprint race.

Limit exceeded after red word. 76 full, 59 otherwise.

Alikki-Corra Street Course
Feature Race

''Keep a cool head, avoid accidents!''

Those were the words Xander had repeated to both Kaylan drivers before the start of the race. Now, the team principal had taken his seat in the pit garage, ready to guide his team through the first race of the season. Last few moments to take a deep breath and think about the meaning of life as drivers head out for their formation lap. Xander looked at his feet, covered by the pair of footwear he was wearing. These old shoes, made of brown leather, had seen better days. For the past ten years, they had been his companions through thick and thin. Ever since he started working for Kaylan in the domestic TTRL series, he had been wearing that very pair of shoes every race. They had become sort of a lucky charm for him. The colour had faded over the years, all the marks and scratches on them reminded him of the race weekends spent together. By now, they were far from nice and classy looking, but Xander didn't mind that. They were worn in, comfortable and they were his shoes.

''All set, ready to go.''

Xander breath out and put on his headphones. All the cars had finished their formation lap and were ready to go. Lights out and the show was on! The start went well, no serious collisions, both cars managed to get through the first corner in one piece. However, it didn't take long for the first major incident to happen.

''Zoomtwat is out! Zoomtwat is out!''

Xander looked at screen and saw the UrGa car going airborne, ending up against a wall and sending a lot of debris flying around as Anola was passing by. Having seen Harry climb out from the UrGa that had caught fire, it was clear that a safety car would be brought out.

''Do we have any body damage from that incident? There was a lot of debris flying around.''

''We can't tell for sure. All the indicators seem fine, so if there is, at least it's not anything major.''

''Can you go check?''

Manu stood up and ran to the side of the track. As car #11 drove past, he looked at it carefully, trying to visually spot any damage there might be. It did seem like a bit of floor was missing, so that would probably have an effect on handling for Anola. Manu bit into his lip as he made his way back to the pit garage, to inform the team.

''Anola seems to have some floor damage from the incident. Nothing we can fix though, she needs to carry on with it.''

Once the safety car had gone, the race went on. Lap after lap passed, with Anola seeming to struggle a bit with finding proper pace. Meanwhile, Ted had a marvelous run. Having gained multiple places and just gone through a quick pitstop, he was currently behind Joy Wingelaar as the cars were stacking up behind yet another safety car.

''Tell Ted he is free to pursue Wingelaar, but play it safe.''

With 10 more laps to go, Anola had gained a few places as well and just overtook Lukas Fichter. Nykipiflugpuun had, surprisingly, fallen back on the grid and seemed to start to struggle. Still, despite her best efforts, by the end of the race, 3 cars were separating her from top 14. Still, Xander could appreciate Anola's effort and Ted had done absolutely brilliantly.

Alikki-Corra Street Circuit - Race Day

Heinz-Otto Junker sat in his TMW car, as the formation lap came and went and he was now sitting on the grid, waiting for those lights to go off. He looked around him - plenty of other talented drivers looking to get their start on the world’s stage. He knew it would be a tricky race to get his career started - on a street course, and even after qualifying and a good performance he still had a bit of doubt. No time to worry, though - just time to act. He settled himself in and focused.

Red. Red. Red. Red. Red….. out

Heinz got off to a good start, he thought, jumping at the chance immediately. He pulled himself wheel to wheel with Rod Gozum as the cars headed into the first corner, and he managed to complete the overtake through turn one.

“Good work Heinz, good work, keep pushing now,” came Oliver Werich’s voice over the radio.

Heinz didn’t reply, he was too in the zone as he caught up to the car of Anneliese Devereaux ahead of him. This overtake wouldn’t be so easy, though - Devereaux was a strong driver, and she defended well against him. Heinz was closing in on the gap, though, when his engineer once again came in.

“Heinz, there’s been a big crash - car #66, I repeat car #66. Looks like there’s going to be a safety car, so keep the tyres warm and see if we can’t get a position off the restart.”

A safety car already, on lap 4 of his first race. Just another challenge in the way, thought Heinz, let’s make the most of it. Heinz figured it must have been a major accident, given the safety car period lasted until lap 7. But you can’t worry about it too much, given there’s still a race to be run and danger to come. He was happy to hear, however, that the driver was alright.

Off the restart, Heinz still couldn’t get past Devereaux, but followed her as the two drivers both got past Charyseine Valkyria.

“P4 Heinz, P4, let’s keep pushing and see if we can’t get past Devereaux.”

Lap 26

Heinz was still stuck behind Devereaux, but had closed the gap since the first round of pit stops and seemed to have a bit better pace. He needed to overtake quick, though, because the field was gaining behind him. Two drivers were said to be surging rapidly through the field, and he needed to get into a better position.

It was a good battle between the drivers, but finally, Junker was able to get the upper hand into the unpredictable ‘S’ section at the top of the track, and get past. A spirited battle - that was the racing Heinz had hoped to find in WGP2. Now he was up to P3, a podium place.

Lap 44

“Another safety car Heinz, will bring things together. Let’s take the fight to them now, podium isn’t out of reach.”

P3 hadn’t lasted long - that spirited charge through the field he mentioned? Janne Laukkanen didn’t slow down, and he’d managed to overtake Heinz not long before the safety car had come out. Heinz had pitted for fresh tyres at lap 40, so he was hopeful that this opportunity would allow him to maybe take his position back.

On the contrary. The cars ahead of him were lightning-quick off the restart, while Heinz had to put all of his efforts into defending from Athan Lille behind him - another driver who had had an excellent race, using great pit stop strategy to pull himself through the field. Heinz just managed to hold him off, and on a newer tyre was able to build a bit of a gap.

“Keep pushing, let’s build the gap to the car behind”

“Got it, Oli”

“Gap is-”

“Got it.”

Heinz kept pushing hard, even when Laukkanen was no longer in sight. Importantly, however, he’d built a strong gap to the car behind. The safety car hadn’t gone exactly to plan - but he seemed to be safe now in P4.

Lap 51

“Heinz, we are safe to the car behind, too far out of reach of the car ahead. We’d like you to box for the super softs, we’d like to make an attempt for the fastest lap. Copy?”

A glory run? Why not. “Copy, boxing this lap.”

The pit stop went well - TMW were generally considered the best pit crew within Siovanija & Teusland’s championship, so Heinz thought it would be interesting to see how they stacked up internationally. As far as he could tell, things were going quite well.

The outlap went well, too, giving Heinz the final lap of the race to try to get that extra point.

“Fastest lap is a 1:49.681, Heinz, you’ll need a strong time through those S’s to get near it.”

Unfortunately, however, it was those S’s that did him in. They’d helped him gain position earlier in the race, but just a slight misjudgement had caused him to be out of reach for that fastest lap time. He tried hard through the final sector, but it wasn’t enough.

“1:49.925, good effort but not enough. Either way, P4 Heinz. Excellent start to the season. Joy P11, she had a solid race and she’s going to be in good positioning for the sprint race tomorrow.”

Then, team principal Jorn Feister came over the radio, speaking to both drivers.

“Joy, Heinz, solid race for both of you, and happy to say the first points in WGP2 for our team. There’s still a lot of fighting to be done, though - sprint race tomorrow, and we’ve got some strong positioning for that one. So let’s debrief, rest well tonight and tomorrow get back out there. Great work today both of you.”

Heinz was quite happy with his performance, and he was looking forward to tomorrow’s sprint race - he was excited for the battles that would come from him starting 11th, and with Joy starting up in P4 he was hopeful the team could continue its strong performance into the second day of the event.

Grabbing a bottle of water and joining Joy, Jorn and the engineers back in the garage, Heinz couldn’t hide his smile - his goal for the street course was to keep it out of the wall, so P4 was a pretty decent start.

Streets of Alikki-Corra Grand Prix - Feature Race

"That's it for the race, I'm afraid. Sorry about that," race engineer Creusa Nárë said to Indra over the radio. The onboard footage on Indra's car showed him expressing disappointment on what could have been.

"It's none of your fault," she continued her remarks with regret. "Pull the car over to the side, there will be a safety car. I repeat, there will be a safety car." The driver replied in the affirmative.

"What happened?" Aldauren asked Creusa afterwards as the crew asked for his presence there.

"Preliminary assessment is tire puncture, some suspension damage occurred as well, it seems," she answered to the team principal.

"Sheogorath blind me," he said, rolling his eyes. "I can't believe this. Laura's also facing difficulty, and she has fallen a few positions now."

Erik reassured Aldauren that he'll continue to work closely with Laura and make the most of the cards in their hand. That freed the elf to do something else.

"I should go wait for Indra to come back, it's a shame it happened in his first race," Aldauren said before he parted ways.

Aldauren walked to Indra's garage. A few laps to go before the race finished, he hoped Laura completes this one. He could feel the adrenaline coursing through his veins.

The final corner of the last lap was one of the hardest to watch. Just one more chance for Laura to deftly negotiate it... and yes! Aldauren was elated that she was able to eke out a point for the team despite her P19 finish: she has the fastest lap. Their machines can compete.

Manolo had mixed reactions after the feature race in the first round of the new WGP2 season ended. Both the drivers of the Equipo Telebuenas-BA have finished in the points, being the only team to do so. However, they occupied the last two scoring positions, thus putting the team only seventh in the teams' championship after one race. What was more telling was that both drivers did not finish in the lead lap, getting to the chequered flag one lap short of race distance.

The initial thoughts of the team to the new WGP2 season was brutal, as in the feature race, only the top 8 drivers would be awarded championship points, although in the sprint race, where the top 14 finishers would be put on a reverse grid with the feature race winner starting fourteenth, and the fourteenth placed driver would take pole for the sprint race, the top 12 would be scoring points. However, to get there, drivers must qualify within 107 percent of the pole position driver, and only applies when the qualifying sessions is declared a dry session, which meant that should the session had been a dry one, they would have been pressured to have set their only shot of setting a lap time within the limits.

Manolo would wonder why Rod, despite starting fifth in the one shot qualifying session, was off pace from the leaders and finish with a net loss of two places to seventh. He was happy though that Edward made a fine recovery from starting 22nd taking advantage of the restart after the safety car went into the pits. The results from the feature race meant that Rousseau would start 7th and Gozum 8th for the sprint race, and the shorter race distance would mean that the chances both drivers will be in the points again would be high.

In terms of the driver academy, Edward would gain the upper hand from Indra Vartak and Luc Deschamps after the first race. Vartak, driving for the PB-Viska outfit from Diarcesia, triggered the second safety car after his retirement in the 43rd lap of the race. Deschamps meanwhile would not be on the track as he has yet to decide whether to race for Fireline who won the first race with Adriana Kowalski. That would certainly give a bigger chance for Deschamps to finally sign as the team would show its speed.

Manolo hopes though that an Equipo Telebuenas car would take the chequers in the Sprint race, even if less points would be on offer.

Excerpt from the GS SuperSports+ MotoVröööm show, hosted by Græntfjall-based but Schutzenphalian-born presenter Jessika Jünkindietrünk.

Jessika is vamping a little as they’re, embarrassingly for the new channel, having some trouble getting the connection to Lukas Fichter up. In her off-the-cuff remarks, her mispronunciations have already started two low-intensity conflicts and caused an emergency session of the World Assembly to discuss the whereabouts of an apparently goat-obsessed pariah state named “Grobnurg”.

Finally, the display flickers to life, and a rather disconsolate Lukas, looking as though he wished he could hide behind connection issues for a while longer, comes into focus.

    “Hallo Lukas!?”

“Hallo Jessika, thank you for having me on the show again.”

    Image

“We’re excited to have you! But a little disappointed we haven’t happier results to discuss. Things didn’t go very well in Villainy & Tyranny?”

“No, the race in Vilita was a bad one for the team. I know Batu and I are both disappointed we weren’t able to do more with the car.”

“Lukas you started near the back and did manage to move up a couple places, but it wasn’t enough. Meanwhile Janne Laukkanen of Aboobland did very well, absolutely leaping up the field. Athan Lille of Listen’ere also moved up a lot. What did they do right that you weren’t able to?”

Lukas gives her a ‘we’re going to need a bigger noose’ stare as he regrets signing up to appear every week on her show.

“Thanks for that Jessika. Look, overtaking on a circuit like this is very difficult. I took my chances when they came, but I didn’t want to risk losing it on one of those S turns as we saw happen early to another driver.”

“But Janne and Athan weren’t particularly aggressive? Were they just better drivers on the day, or is it the car?”

    “It’s not the car.”

The caption under Lukas pops up: ‘Lukas Fichter, terrible driver’.

“We’re still ironing out things technically, is what I mean to say. But even if Nykipiflugpuun Noortekoondis are a new team, they’re working with a lot of experience behind them, so I have every confidence we’re going to put together a competitive team. Today’s race just never gave me the opportunity I needed after such a bad qualification.”

“What’s been the reaction in the Nakedpeopleflingingpoo team to today’s race?”

    Despair.

“Optimism!” he lies. “Today’s race was a rough start but there’ll be plenty of opportunities coming up.”

    “Starting in Butcher Pork.”

“That’s right, the next race in Baker Park is an interesting one. It’s a switchback course and how the drivers handle those hairpins at 8 and 9 will probably determine the race, but there’s some longer stretches with the opportunity for overtaking.”

“Alright Lukas, well we wish you a better time in Candlestickmaker Perk.”

    “Thank you Jessika.”

“Next up, we have journalist Angelina Bergmann, who’s going to discuss how many metric tons of ass Lukas Fichter sucks.”

    “Still here Jessika.”

Jessika winces as the connection that was so difficult to get up and running, now proves difficult to sever.

Alikki-Corra Street Circuit - Race Day

Given her position at the start of the race, things went as well as one could imagine in the early going for Anola. The weather had been absolutely horrible during qualifying - even by Chromatik standards - and the goal for the race as dictated by Kaylan was to finish in Top Fourteen and get set up in a good position for the Sprint race instead.

And then... In a blur, Zoomtwat crashed out, and the resulting debris took out a piece of the #11 car's floor. Anola could feel the car vibrate as it struggled to get along. She calmed herself and tested the vehicle's limits, being once again thankful that these were of a make different than anything in Chromatika, her mind unwillingly being taken to the day of the biggest accident in Chromatik motor racing history...

'Snap out of it, Anola, you can think about Margaret Beaux later. You're not going to join her today, get your head back in gear,' she chastised herself.

It was obvious from that point onward that she wasn't going to able to drive the car to its fullest potential. She even said as much the next time she made a pit stop, and the body language from the pit crew said everything she needed to know: there was nothing they could do about it now. They stressed safety, she promised safety, and that she would try her damnedest to claw her way as close to fourteenth as possible. The look that they gave back to her was one of concern for her safety should she push the car too far.

She knew better than that. Or, more precisely, she'd been there, done that. Once again, the memories of Margaret Beaux's crash from the Chromatik City (that was prior to the renaming of the city, she remembered) Race. Beaux's steering had gone haywire in the middle of the race with Anola only a few seconds behind her, causing the veteran's car to spin out and clip Anola's left wheel casing. The resulting crash spun her around a few times but took her on a trajectory away from Beaux's vehicle, which turned out to be most fortuitous as she avoided the multi-car pileup that would put three drivers in the hospital for over a month and end Margaret Beaux's career.

The craziest thing that she'd done that day, though, was continue racing. She'd spun out and ended up still on the track, and luck would have it that there were no cars coming, and the car that she had been in still had some to give. So, when the safety crews came in and removed the wrecks, she gave them a thumbs up. Her parents would let her know afterwards that they were absolutely shocked when she actually finished the race in third place with a car that had gone through a wreck.

This scenario though? It was different. This was the first race of a long season, and there was far more on the line than small amounts of money and bragging rights. If she ended up in an accident, it impacted far more than just her well being and her future. So, she took it slow and methodically, making sure to not lose position if she could help it but coaxing the car to do her bidding instead of trying to force it into situations that she knew it would struggle with. It helped her in this instance that she was far more a cerebral driver than an instinctive one, as her mind was giving her updates on just how sharp she could take turns, just how much to press on the gas and then back off, just how close she was to overtaking the next driver...

She managed to catch Lukas Fichter one one of the straight patches, smiling in triumph as she did so. She knew she was far outside fourteenth, and that this was hardly what Kaylan wanted from this race. However, she wanted to show them that she knew how to handle adversity, and that she was experienced enough to handle herself and make up a few spots even while being handicapped. Yes, if she'd done better in qualifying she wouldn't have been in the scenario at all. Yes, the start of the race had been less than ideal. However, each of them could only do the best with what they had in front of them, and she was determined to show that she was, in fact, doing that very thing.

As the race ended - Anola being seventeenth - she was pleasantly surprised to see that Ted had finished in twelfth and would be in a good starting position for the Sprint race. She went to congratulate the Tumbran and to wish him luck in the morrow, answering his query about how her race went with a detailed report on what had happened. He nodded in sympathy and commented that she had been lucky to be able to finish the race at all.

'Just like that day in Chromatik City,' she mused. There were some in Chromatika who actually believed that humans had nine lives like some cats. She felt like she'd just used up her second when it came to racing. Would she have seven more? When she did use up her ninth life, would she have to quit?

Thankfully, there was no time to think about that now. No, what was far more pressing was making sure that the car would be ready to go for the next day's race. Sure, she knew that starting seventeenth in a field of twenty-seven was hardly the best scenario, especially in a sprint race; however, she was here, this was all experience, and she would be damned if she didn't try to pass seven people using everything that she knew.

For it was hardly her fault that her luck had held up so far. No, she hadn't been like Lars Gradhein, with a broken rib that took a month to heal. Nor was she like Marty Dean, with a broken right hand that took six weeks. She sure hadn't suffered like Margaret Beaux, who did make a miraculous recovery from two broken vertebrae and was now working with the Chromatik Government to make sure that Chromatik motorsports would have much better safety precautions going forward. No, the fates had been kind enough to Anola Melani so far, and she was going to make the best of that that she could.

"You go do what I couldn't, and give them hell," was the last words that Margaret had told her when she'd one to visit her competitor and mentor before she had left for Vilita.

She intended to. And perhaps, that will would be enough.

Márquez: “apart from not being very good in the dry/wet, the car is great”

Verdean WGP2 driver Alex Márquez gave her enthusiastic backing to her Grand Prix Sport Chanceaux team after a difficult opening to the season on the Alikki-Corra Street Course. After a qualifying session in which she finished last, Márquez made up two places in the race itself, but still finished a long way from even dreaming of any points. “The problem in qualifying was the rainy weather, which definitely wasn’t ideal for this car,” she said. “And the problem in the race was the dry weather, which is also not ideal. But other than that, I have absolutely no complaints. I think that so long as we can avoid dry weather or rainy weather or anything in between, we have a really strong chance of mounting a formidable challenge this season.”

Broadcast home to a huge crowd assembled on the Plaza de la Revolución, whose joy at seeing the colors of Montaña Verde in international motor sports quickly soured on seeing Márquez struggling to control her car around the first corner and nearly spinning out. She recovered some time and was even able to pass Batu Tüvshinbayar and Adeline Darlington-Whit, to wild cheers from the by-then thinning crowd somewhat out of proportion to the scale of her achievement – she finished in 22nd place overall. Indeed, perhaps her most notable accomplishment was steering through the flaming debris littering the track after a driver ahead of her crashed out early, with Márquez one of the few caught behind him and able to dodge the wreckage.

Márquez said she thought driving on the street track was a “learning experience”. “Our car isn’t really designed to excel on street courses or non-street courses, though other than that it’s the absolute best car you could ask for,” she explained. She also admitted tomorrow’s sprint race would be difficult. “Apart from features, sprints, qualifying, and practice, though, I think there are a lot of conditions under which we’ll do really well.

Alikki-Corra, Vilita
Alikki-Corra Street Course
Feature Race

Janne’s eyes drooped as Antti’s mellow voice sounded through the radio. “Tuule, poika,” he whispered, hiding a soft smile behind his still-there off-season beard.

“Yeah,” he replied, smiling but without enough conviction. His last season had been pitiful, but after having spent so long trying to reinvent himself he’d certainly not expected to find himself exactly where he’d left off: toiling at the back of the grid after a horrid qualifying lap, absorbing the hollow words of his race engineer’s distant cheers, racing without so much as the hope of a good result.

And he’d certainly not expected to see himself launch off the grid with such immediate speed, nor had he expected Zoomtwat’s lap three accident to hand him such a strategic advantage, and much less had he expected to slice up the grid in such stellar fashion..

After having rocketed from 23rd up to third, just edging Heinz Otto Junker for the last podium place, second seemed a far cry away, with Kowalski and Vialiv dominating the rest of the field, but a late safety car on lap 44 brought his chances to a crossroads once more. His charge resumed, his eyes red and bloodshot with passion and desire, though the local rookie was just quick enough to stay out of his grasp, crossing the line just four tenths ahead.

Immediately as he crossed the line, Gertrude came through the radio, channeling just a hint of Timothy Guard: it was her, who’d trusted him so much, supported him through thick and thin, and whose voice could hardly contain her pride.

“Awesome race, Janne! You took the fight to a place where we never thought we could - that’s the mark of a future champion! Keep pushing those limits!”

He grinned like a petted dog from behind his visor, and his voice cracked as he thanked the Nimban. Had the message been just a little longer, he’d have shed a tear.

LiteSpeed Mobile WGP2 Grand Prix of Baker Park

April 9-11, Drummond Vale Racing Circuit

First used for motorsport in 1953 as a motorcycle hillclimb venue, Drummond Vale was slowly developed into a fully enclosed racing facility between 1960-65, and lengthened to its current 3.35 mile (5.4km) distance in 1975 with the addition of the 'Foot' complex to the south of the main straight.
Located in the southwestern corner of Baker Park State, the largest of the seven that make up the Commonwealth, the course sits about 5.5 miles (8.8 km) outside the town of Drummond Vale, and is easily accessible via expressway from the nearest major cities—Clayton, Ezriquay, Hamilton and Belle Haven, the capital of the nation.

Image

There are four permanent track configurations, which can also be mixed and matched at several points; the Club Course is the shortest and is used mainly for karting, open wheel midgets and properly equipped small sports cars for use by members of the DVRC Club; the Vale Course runs longer and includes the flatter area of the infield, where touring cars, Formula BP (open wheel}, and professionally equipped sports cars, along with motorcycles compete; the Hill Course, which was the original hill climb track and used by the same group that race on the Vale; and the full length Championship Course, which will be the configuration on which the WGP2 series will race.

Image

[The following preview assumes a five speed transmission vehicle with a top speed of 162 mph (260.8 kph)]
The run down the front straight leads to the first corner, a sweeping left hander taken in fourth or fifth gear—from the start/finish line its fourth, fifth when the entire length of the straight is traveled—followed by the first heavy breaking area at turn 2, where the runoff area is mainly to the right. Turn 3 is wider, with a gravel trap to the outside once past the pit lane exit, followed by a quick blast through turn 4 (4 gear) to a left hand widening radius turn 5 before another braking zone at turn 6 (gravel/asphalt runoff to the outside) and another right hander at 7. The climb to turn 8 is about 2.6% grade and reaching the highest point on the track (5g) brings you to a double apex left hand hairpin (2g) with a minimal downslope to turn 9, a tighter right hand version of the previous corner, with the added factor of the second apex being off camber to the outside and the beginning of the downhill back “straight”. There is gravel outside of both 8 & 9, but asphalt at the exits to both.
The descent includes the 5th gear turn 10 before reaching the chicane, a right-left-right turns 11 & 12 with a heavy breaking zone on the approach. This is the lowest point on the course and after 12, there is a moderate uphill blast to 13, another hairpin that can be taken a bit faster than the other two, followed by the run to 14, a hard braking left hander that is followed by a tight right hand (2g) at 15, the “heel” of the foot, with another run up through the gears to 16, slower on entry than the exit (with the pit lane entrance on the left) then through the sweep at 17 back onto the main straight.

There are grandstands along the main straight, outside of turns 3-4, the inside area at the chicane and between 15-16, along with spectator viewing areas between 6-7 and inside of turns 8 and 12.

There was a discernible amount of buzz in the garage an hour after the second race of the weekend had concluded.

Everyone was busy packing up the equipment to head back home, loading the hauler and awaiting the word to retrieve the cars from parc ferme so they could be broken down and loaded last thing.
It didn't feel like a group of men and women who had just seen the teams' entries finish 19th and 20th out of 27, both having been lapped for the second day in a row (although they had both been a few spots higher before a late pit stop for new tires); Pedro had come through at the end to take fastest lap, earning the Scuderia their first WGP2 point, and neither he nor Jordan had put a wheel wrong across the four on-track sessions, heaping praise on the entire team at the conclusion of both race days.

There would be long hours of work back in Haskins after they arrived home to prepare for the next race—their race, a home race—but everyone was given a huge boost of confidence by the performance in the Vilitan capital.
“Really proud of you guys today, tough conditions but you brought the cars home in one piece. I think we've gained some respect from other teams this weekend” said Paul Valentini, the Chief Engineer at the beginning of de-brief. “Monday off for both you. Tuesday back to work, and I think we'll be making a road trip”.

Monday morning saw Jill Franklin, team Commercial Director, and Helena Kaczakzy, who would be Sakiteno's media liaison/personal assistant, waiting at the airport in Oceana for their newest signing to arrive along with An'ue. Both women were a bit bleary eyed, as they had stayed overnight in a hotel near the airport instead of having to drive all the way back from Haskins after the team had arrived the night before and returned to the facility; understandably they were enthusiastic about the idea of a female driver in the second seat, as were the other women involved with the race team.

There were 5 women among the 20 mechanics, plus Rebecca Paulson, the Media Director and her assistant Gayle Millhouse; another 3 working with the engineering and technical department on data and information systems and two more who were general purpose garage assistants, helping out wherever needed. Along with Jill and Helena, that made 14, about 1/3 of the race team, and not including others who worked in the factory and as support staff. Kuyara was going to have plenty of female company on her journey with the Scuderia.

The Feature Race
Written In First-Person As Indra Vartak

The qualifying went well for me but turned out to be a bad day for Laura Haukanna who qualified seventeenth. The rainy conditions were a huge pain for all drivers who struggled to hold their ground, including Laura. After Laura, it was my chance to turn things around for PB-Viska. After consulting Aldauren, I waited patiently for my turn to out there. Even in the rainy conditions, I somehow was able to qualify ninth and the team was happy with that. Our goal this race was to at least bring a few points back home.

I was excited about my first race, I was going to make history for our people. Our cars were on the grid and after consulting Aldauren, I got into my car. This was going to my day and no one can take it away from me. I just hoped I don't mess up anything today.

Later On Lap 43
Things were going great for me as I overtook a few drivers in front of me to take the seventh position. My race engineer cheered me on to keep going. Then things went horribly wrong for all of us. On lap 43, something went wrong with the tires and I could also feel some damage on my right rear end. My car scraped against the grey asphalt road and slowed down as other cars pass me. I felt completely helpless at that moment. "That's it for the race, I'm afraid. Sorry about that, it's not your fault," he paused for a bit, "Pull the car over to the side, there will be a safety car. I repeat, there will be a safety car." "Okay...." I replied, shaking my head in disappointment. I could hear those rich kids from my school mocking me again.

The Sprint Race
Written In First-Person As Indra Vartak

I was still a bit grumpy from my last feature race, I could have gotten a few points for my team but the tires completely failed me. Luckily, Laura set the fastest lap in the race and brought a bonus point for us. However, that isn't enough we want to be considered as a real threat. There was no time to look back, I am starting 25th so I have to do the best I could to get ahead.

After a quick talk with Aldauren, I went to meet Mr Chauhan. He patted me on th back and said, "Things like these happen and you can't do much about them. What matters now is what's about to come. You have the sprint race today and you are quite behind. Don't let that stop you from trying, keeping pushing all the way." I still can't get those guys [bullies from his school days] out of my head. I heard them after I had to retire yesterday and I still hear them. I will lose my mind now.

What? No, no, no, my focus should be on the race. I can't afford any mistakes on my behalf today. It's time to go all out.

The drivers got in their cars, with 27 laps to go today, I didn't have a lot of time to catch up with the leaders. The last thing I wanted in my mind was the voices of those rich kids. I started having flashbacks from the day they attacked with hockey sticks and cricket bats. The first red light appeared, then the second, then the third, fourth and fifth. Just when the lights went off, I remember how I struck back that day. The lights went out and we were off with our race.

Lead Mine, Ashos

Elise got home after her grandmother stabilized. She looks at her messages and sees a response.

"Huh, what are the odds that the sponsor is the same. I can't get another one in time. That sucks. Oh well, better send a message back.

To: Lucas Schwarcz
Hospitality Coordinator, MW Racing

From: Elise Shaw <shawelise1995@islesmail.tki>

Thanks for taking a chance on me. It's an unfortunate coincidence that the sponsor I had lined up is from the same industry. I've sent a message to another sponsor, Camerilli Racing Development, that helped me in the past and I haven't heard from them yet. I'll be more proactive and you'll see me at Drummond Vale this weekend.

Signed,
Elise Shaw

EDIT: The sponsor has responded back and they're willing to support for the whole season

Elise let out a loud sigh.

"I need to get out of my funk and look at the bigger picture." Elise paused. She pulled out her phone.

"Hey, David. [...] Yeah, it's Elise. [...] Yep, we're going to be racing in the WGP2. See you at Horrison International. [...] Bye."

Why...Why Oh Why...

Postby TJUN-ia » Wed Apr 07, 2021 3:43 am

After qualifying 11th for his first-ever race weekend in WGP2, Batu Tüvshinbayar was certainly a bit nervous in time for his first-ever taste of international racing action. He felt like he has certainly improved his form as Friday went on and was certainly hoping to get something out of his debut weekend...but that wouldn't happen at all. On no, not at all.

Saturday arrived in Alikki-Corra and everything was dry, but Batu's time in his first-ever WGP2 race would not be as beautiful as the weather at all. The start would certainly be chaotic as he slipped down the field from the off but the crashing of one Harry Zoomtwat on lap 3 meant the Safety Car neutralised things for a while. Once the racing resumed, the fall did too as Batu struggled in some way. Maybe it was the car, as teammate Lukas Fitcher was also not having the best of times, or maybe it was Batu himself how just couldn't get it right, a reality that seemed more likely in the head of the one from Shinebaishin. He would end up at the ack for the rest of the race, only overtaking drivers as they DNFd and coming home in a lonely 24th, 2 laps down on the leaders. Adriana Kowalski Ela Lillian returned to the series in style with the win over Skiia Vialiv and Janne Laukkanen while Fitcher was a lap down himself in 18th. Definitely not the best start to your WGP2 career in the slightest.

But things would certainly get worse on Sunday. Light Rain meant that the race was certainly tight with the time limit, with Batu starting where he finished yesterday. It would be a testing time out there for all but he wouldn't get to take part in half of the actual running, sliding into a wall somewhere on this long circuit and forced to park it up in a recovery zone on lap 12, the same lap the controversial Adeline Darlington-Whit also had to retire. Fitcher ended up a lap down again in 17th while Chiruno Hakusoe won this race (over Indra Vartak and Heinz-Otto Junker), meaning that Nykipiflugpuun Noortekoondis would end the first weekend of the season with no points at all.

Batu didn't like how he started things here. He could feel the pressure of his people upon him and he knew what happened this weekend was never enough for them. He would end up meditating in the rain in a quiet corner of the paddock, trying to keep the tears from his eyes whilst asking the Buddha for some sort of luck. The long road had begun with a bump, but he hoped to improve in Drummond Vale before he lost all hope of...anything, really...

"Not again, Simon," Ted said, lined up on the grid, as a light drizzle enveloped the circuit once more. He hated the rain, especially on this circuit. It was difficult enough to drive in the dry, let alone in the wet, as his qualifying exploits showed.

"You'll be defending this time, Ted, and not attacking. Whole different ball game out there. Be careful, though. Wingelaar's starting next to you, and if you get stuck behind her again, there's a chance the same thing happens as yesterday. Janne gets past, but you don't, and then you get stuck behind her."

"Yeah, yeah," he mentioned as he put his helmet on, casting a wary eye at the cream-coloured TMW car. She'd be the one to beat, for sure. After slicing through the field - following Janne Laukkanen like a hawk, and focusing on pretty much every opportunity he'd taken - he'd gotten stuck behind her, and crossed the line in the feature race about a second behind her. Frustrating? Yeah, it'd been, but she'd be starting next to him, now. A budding rivalry? He sure hoped not.

"We'll come in...whenever the rain starts to lighten up, if it does. Otherwise, it'll be a one-stopper, you come in on lap 18. You should be able to hold these tyres for that long. Good luck, and I'll see you at the end of the race, Ted."

"Thanks." And then, the Kaylan umbrella was taken away, and he was forced to reckon with the steady pitter-patter of warm rain on his helmet once more.

He steeled himself as the cars set off on the formation lap - up top was Matviyenko, then Valkryia, kicking up a bit of spray in their wake, but it was nothing his tyres couldn't handle. Swerving from side to side, he tried to keep up with Valkryia as the grid winded its way through the streets of Alikki-Corra.

"Tyres?"
"Tyre temps are good."
"Right, cos the amount of spray these two are kicking up, I'd be surprised if they were anywhere near warm."
'Tyre temps are good, Ted. Keep your head down."

And they lined up on the grid again - Zoomtwat taking an absolute eternity to position his repaired car on the grid - and after an eternity of lights after, the five red lights went out and off they went. It was a good start - Matviyenko tried to cut him off, but Ted had taken a less-than-optimum line that would help get him clean air, and soon him and Wingelaar had overtaken the two drivers. By the end of lap 3, the running order was Pressley-Wingelaar-Valkryia, though the two were constantly in his mirrors, and he just couldn't shake them.

By lap 13, his tyres were beginning to grain.

"Push, Ted, push."
"I'm trying."

Then, the inevitable lockup happened. Near the rear of the circuit - that sharp 90-degree corner - he locked up, and went deep. His heart raced as he tried to avoid the walls, and Joy - but Joy went diving inside, and took the lead. Ted didn't want his race to end, and had to take evasive action. Thankfully, he recovered before Valkryia could take advantage of his slip-up.

"What was she doing? She could have taken both of us out of the race!"
"Tough luck, Ted. It's alright. Push, push."

He tried pushing, but again, the same thing happened - Joy kept him behind, as she did during the feature race - and the gap kept increasing. On lap 18, defeated, and with his tyres gone, he pulled into the pits.

"We'll be racing Vartak on pit exit. Vartak."
"Isn't he plum last or something?"
"He's been climbing up the grid. Doing a Janne."

Either way, the PB-Viska driver was on a roll. There wasn't much to do about his pace - he was flying, and by the time he came out of the pits, Vartak was ahead of both him and Joy, with Chiruno Hakusoe having taken the lead earlier on. To make things worse, more drivers had overtaken the trio - and they re-emerged in fourth, fifth and sixth, which was where they finished, but by the end of it Joy had stretched her lead over him to eight seconds, while he'd finished eleven seconds ahead of Valkryia.

"Good job mate, good recovery."
"Agh, I'm sorry guys. If I hadn't locked up, we'd probably be having a different celebration here."
"6th is still decent, Ted, coupled with Anola finishing eighth, this was more than a good result for us."

And so he pulled up into parc ferme, shook hands with Joy, thanking her for the good racing, and went over to Anola, congratulating her for the excellent recovery drive she'd put in. It was a decent result - Kaylan would be seventh with twelve valuable points - but it would be a good foundation for the remaining nine races that came ahead.

Due to a lack of communication despite repeated attempts to reach out since prior to the season's first pre-season test event in Twicetagria, the World Grand Prix Organisation confirms the following decisions:

(1) Grand Prix Sport Chanceux of Sommet de Lespoir hereby has its World Grand Prix Tier Two Championship team racing license revoked;
(2) Erkuns-Hohnschich-Furzeine-Motospiel of Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland is hereby awarded the same team racing license;
(3) Erkuns-Hohnschich-Furzeine-Motospiel will take on the contracts of all team staff and drivers of Grand Prix Sport Chanceux, including signed drivers David Clarke of Sword Island and Alex Márquez of Montana Verde;
(4) Erkuns-Hohnschich-Furzeine-Motospiel may, without penalty, terminate any staff or drivers and sign replacements, not counting towards the team limit of one driver change per season.

Additionally, after further consideration on a prior matter, the WGPO announces the following decisions:
(5) National Armament Corporation Racing is hereby excluded from the season, and their World Grand Prix Tier Two Championship team racing license is revoked;
(6) Adeline Darlington-Whit's World Grand Prix Tier Two Championship driving racing license is revoked, and they will take no further part in the season.

It was time for another team meeting before the sprint race. Joy was in a perfect position for this one, starting on the second row of the grid. It was a chance for her to truly make an impact at the start of this season.

“We are going to split the strategies on this one,” Jorn was saying at the head of the table. “Joy, with your second row grid spot you should benefit from field position if you stay out, so we will have you go the whole race on the hard tyres if you can.”

Okay, that was interesting. She zoned out slightly from what Jorn was saying to Heinz, knowing that she had to focus on her own race. The field position was good, and she may have a great opportunity depending on what the others around her did, but there was always the worry of tyre wear.

“Any questions?” Joy snapped back into reality as Jorn finished talking to Heinz and his mechanic, and addressed them all once again.

“How are we feeling about the tyres lasting for 35 laps?” She didn’t quite know yet how the Deyoze tyres would do over a long period, especially on a street circuit.

“We’re hopeful given the simulations that they’ll last. You may have to manage them a little towards the end, but hopefully you’ll be in a good position by then.” Jorn was talking a lot of sense, and Joy nodded. She was comfortable with this risk. Maybe, just maybe, it was what she needed to get a podium given her positioning for this race.

By Lap 13 of the race, things were looking good for Joy Wingelaar. Her harder compound of tyres were really starting to come into their own, even amidst the light rain, as plenty of those around her started to struggle with theirs. She was running close behind Ted Pressley in the Kaylan, with Charyseine Valkyria behind her in third. She wasn’t asking for many updates, with her focus on the track, but through the esses she checked in.

“Time to Pressley in front?”

“6 tenths, and his tyres are struggling. Go get him.” Kaspar’s encouraging words helped, as she began to plot a move. The final corner? Try and beat him on the straight?

“I’ve got this.” It was both a positive affirmation to herself, and a sign for radio silence while she tried to get past him.

As it turned out, she didn’t need to wait until the straight. Pressley’s tyres clearly were graining, and he had a huge lock-up into one of the 90 degree corners in Sector 3. She saw her chance. She took the TMW down the inside at the corner as the Tumbran tried to recover, and shot past him, even as he had to correct his turn to avoid contact with her sided.

“Well done Joy! You are P1. Let’s keep this up.” As Kaspar radioed into her, she could hear shouting in the background; clearly the TMW mechanics were happy to see her move on Ted Pressley.

“Tyres are feeling good Kaspar. Hope the crew enjoyed that one.” She allowed herself a little smirk as she came down the straight, her gold and black TMW leading a WGP2 race for the first time. This is what she loved about racing.

About ten laps later, she wasn’t loving the racing quite as much.

Her tyres had done an incredible job through the middle of the race, and she had a good amount of pace. However, she could feel the tyres struggling underneath her. Clearly, the simulations weren’t quite right, whether it was the rain or the street circuit.

“My tyres are dying on me Kaspar.”

“I know, focus on managing them through the corners, avoid the kerbs if you can.” He was right, but it was frustrating; it meant losing even more time to Hakusoe behind her, who seemed to have fresher tyres powering the VSK.

She knew it was somewhat inevitable. There were ten laps of Alikki-Corra’s streets to go, she wasn’t going to be able to make the tyres hold on for that long. It didn’t change that frustration, however, as Hakusoe found her way past her and stormed off into the next corner. It didn’t stop there either. Indra Vartak got past her a couple of laps later, having charged his way through the field.

“Who’s behind?”

“Heinz, on fresher tyres.”

Shit. She knew what was coming now. He was in a much better position in the race at this point to try and chase down Hakusoe and Vartak. She wasn’t going to let him go easily though, she knew better than that. They spent the 29th lap close together and battling, safely, before eventually Heinz made his way past her into the final corner.

“Hard luck Joy, you’re still in a good spot, keep it up.” She knew Kaspar was right, as frustrating as it was. She had given him a battle, considering the tyres, and now he had a shot at the podium that she was so near to getting.

Rounding the final corner, it was one of those moments where Joy didn’t know quite how to feel. She had had a great race; even after being passed by Vialiv, the home town hero, she was in 5th, ahead of Pressley, again. She couldn’t quite shake the thought that she almost had something bigger though.

“P5 Joy, P5, very good race.” Kaspar’s voice came over the radio as she slowly brought the car home. “That’s a good haul of point. Heinz was P3 from Hakusoe and Vartak, so that should put us top of the team standings.”

“Great work guys, danke. Just a shame the tyres couldn’t last any longer. Congratulations to Heinz, that’s very well deserved on his part!”

In parc ferme afterwards, Ted Pressley made his way over from the Kaylan garage and shook her hand, thanking her for the race. She reciprocated, somewhat taken aback by his friendliness. She’d imagined that everyone at Kaylan hated her with the decision to sign with TMW instead, but Ted seemed to be an exception at the very least. She had certainly enjoyed racing against him in both races this weekend, and he’d given her a run for her money.

She was legitimately happy for Heinz; this didn’t feel like the stereotype of a racing team, where the two teammates hated each other and took each other out on track. This felt like friendly competition, and she was happy to see him celebrating on the podium. She shouted for him, along with her father stood next to her, who was shouting just as loudly as he would if it was his daughter up there. It could have been her in this race, but she knew that there was a long way to go in this season. There were plenty more opportunities to be up there herself.

Post 10 – Averaging Out.

As Adriana pulls the car out of her garage, the Fireline team was also full of smiles and energy. They have been happily taking down notes and tapping on their tablets with anticipation, looking forward to perhaps another stellar finish from their only driver (at least for the time being). Adriana herself was happy, to think that she got such a huge head-start in points after what happened back in wGPC 18; from getting perhaps 3-4 points from the entire race, now she got her very first win on the very first race and she got 25 points to show for it. It would not mean that she was going to be complacent; rather, in her own words, "You know, it's good to have that! I may or may not do well for the future races, I hope I am not jinxing myself, but it is good to at least won something, and with a spectacular introduction. I just hope I will be able to keep this up."

Firing and revving her engine, she was good to go, starting off at 14th for this Sprint Race. Slightly light showers, which Adriana had already adjusted for. Adjusting her large helmet and the headphones inside, the lines were crystal clear, with cheers all around. "All right, I got this," she thought to herself, "If I can do it again, maybe I would not have that much of a problem the second time."

"And then they are away!"

Carefully but firmly, Adriana quickly stepped on the gas pedal, propelling forward and immediately started looking at the gaps to which she could use to her advantage. The starting position has definitely put her on quite a small disadvantage, unlike the last race whereby she placed 2nd in the qualifications that enabled her to keep a good lead and eventually won her the race. It has certainly been quite a challenge for her throughout the race duration. The light showers was not exactly the problem; she anticipated it and was working well accordingly with it. As soon as she thought that she found a clear opening, another car would unknowingly block her and impede her progress. This went on for a few more laps until she went for a pit stop. Change of tires, check of car conditions, no refueling, the usual affair. "You are doing good out there, don't worry about it! Though I think it will be nice if you can overtake a few," her crew chief commented, to which Adriana nodded. Starting off at 14th, she went down to 16th, soon 17th if she was not going to keep it up. "That's a lot of cars to overtake, but I will see what I can do!"

And then she was off once again, slowly driving out of the pit stop and then careening along the main race course. She recovered a spot or two just fine, putting her at 15th, but after having too many cars in front of her, now comes the challenge of, "Oh dear, where are the others?" Adriana radioed in, asking for statuses and positions.

Adriana Ela Kowalski Lillian (#40): Ahh, where exactly are the other cars? I am not seeing a lot of traffic ahead of me.
Race Engineer, Fireline Crew (#40, C): Quite far ahead, Adriana. Chiruno and Indra specifically are so far up there. Harry and Taras within your vicinity. See if you can overtake them, but no pressure.
Adriana Ela Kowalski Lillian (#40): It will do, thank you so much!
Race Engineer, Fireline Crew (#40, C): Go get them, you got this!

With some renewed confidence, Adriana gunned for the end, overtaking a few other cars along the way, but ultimately was not enough in making that much of a stride. After all, she had to hit a balance of recklessly going after a vehicle, and to make sure that she does not end up in the DNF wreckage, especially not after having completed 29-30 laps at this point. Just like that, she took the 13th place with stride. From her qualification start-off, to advancing one position, at least it was not that bad, she thought to herself. "Well, what I can say, at least I am not ending up on the bottom of the barrel," Adriana thought to herself. She then turned her attention towards the Fireline crew, talking to a few of them about her somewhat cheerful but lamenting remark, "I really could have sued that extra point or so, haha! I was so close, I am telling you guys!"

As Adriana made her way to the garage and stored it, she turned her attention to a group of people that were walking in a distance, also doing the same thing as her. "Joy Wingelaar!" she thought in her mind excitingly. Adriana didn't exactly know her from anywhere else, but she figured that Joy would be that one person she wanted to talk to. Wrapping up unfinished business and talks with her team, Adriana then made her way towards Joy's garage, helmet on one hand and waving with her other. "Hi, Joy!" she introduced herself with energy, followed by an offer of handshake, "I am Adriana! It's so nice to meet you! I'm sorry if this was rather random, but I thought I would drop by and talk to you. Nothing business-related or race-related, just personal, hehe. So first I just want to say you did great today! That 5th finish today was so cool, you pulled it off well!" She paused for a while, giving Joy to say a few of her own words along the way. She then continued a little bit more, "You reminded me of my friend, too. I have a friend named Joy! She's a bit of a mascot for us! The Personification of Valentine Z and happiness, but more on that some other time if you would like."

In the meantime, Adriana was using another processor in her head to silently load and evaluate the next race; she could very well do it with actual hardware and simulation, but it is never too early to start thinking and working out on how hellish or heavenly the next race course is going to be for Adriana. She was getting a text input from that process: "Drummond Vale Racing Circuit. Evaluation outcome: Okay. Less technical than this course, watch out for pain points. Odds of success: 75%... estimated." Scratching her head a little and saving the data for later use, Adriana turned off the process and directed her fullest attention back at Joy, "So, you must be quite tired, I do apologise for holding you up here. I wonder if you would like to go out or something like that one day? I was just trying to meet new people here and there, hehe."

Alikki-Corra Street Course
Sprint Race

''What you mean Rai is out?'' Xander asked, not quite catching what Manu had just said to him.

''I mean he's out. Hasn't even left the motorhome this morning. Been throwing up all night, sounds like some kind of a stomach disease. You can only imagine the smell coming from that bucket next to his bed...'''

''Okay, you don't need to go to the details. In short, he won't be able to make it to the paddock?''

''Certainly not.''

Xander scratched his chin. Rai, one of Kaylan's pit crew members, had complained about not feeling well after the feature race and had asked if he could go lay down. What seemed to be a minor stomach pain at first had developed into a full-on sickness over the night, leaving him stuck to his bed by the morning of sprint race. As if the start of the season hadn't been stressful enough already for the team, now the pit crew was one man short. And an important one. Rai was the one assigned to change the rear right tyre during pit stops, a spot that would need to be filled by someone else for the sprint race.

Having taken a moment to analyse the situation, Xander walked over to a youngster who was currently busy stacking up tyres in a corner of the pit garage. ''Artyom, I need you to head over to the dressing room and get changed. You'll be at the pits today.''

Having heard what his team principal had just said, Artyom accidentally dropped the tyre in his hands to the floor. ''Pits?'' he repeated, being sure he had just misheard something.

''Yes, you heard right. Pits. Rear right. Stepping in to replace Rai.''

Artyom was one of the newest, and youngest, members of the team. Having previously worked for the fledgling Team Mirkov in WGP3 ENZ Championship, the 17-year old Kassegrochian had, along with Vladimir, received an offer from Kaylan and assigned to their reformed WGP2 team just few months before the season. Artyom had been assigned a role of Junior Mechanic, taking on various simpler tasks in the team such as filling drinking systems for drivers, setting up tyres and some other things here and there. However, the youngster did have previous experience as a pit crew member from WGP3, so it was only a matter of time when he would step in and get a chance to prove himself on the pit lane. It just turned out to be sooner rather than later.

With Artyom and everyone else suited up and cars ready to go out on the formation lap, Xander took his seat. Time to finish this weekend.

Lights out, cars took off. Few laps in and after a great start, Ted was leading the race. Still, it was only a narrow lead, the chasing pack of Wingelaar and Valkyria were right up on his tail and despite the Tumbran's best efforts, there were no signs of a gap being formed. But that wasn't something they were expecting Ted to do either. For now, the main goal was to keep them behind for as long as possible and keep pushing the low downforce Kaylan forward. That was something he managed to do, despite the data showing tyre wear being less than ideal. Until the wheel lockup happened at lap 13.

''Any chance we could pit Ted now?''

''Negative. New set wouldn't last until the end, rain shows no signs of ending. Two-stop would be unthinkable in the current scenario.''

''Understood.''

Meanwhile, further back on the grid, Anola was on a run. After a great start, the Chromatik was smoothly and steadily gaining places by avoiding mistakes and showing good racecraft. Starting P17 meant there wouldn't be much to lose, so Xander had encouraged her to take a more aggressive approach than during feature race. As laps went by with Anola gaining places, an unthinkable became a real possibility... Anola could actually finish in points if she kept going like that. Of course, her driving had put immense pressure on her tyres, which meant that she would be brought to the pits a few laps before Ted.

''Okay, we need a quick pit stop. Come on, we can do this!''

Kaylan's pit crew rushed out of the garage and Xander kept his eyes on the pit lane as Anola pulled in for a stop. Old tyres off, new ones on and off she went again. Xander felt a rock falling off from his chest after a successful pit stop. Having watched the car go, Artyom turned around and, with a smug face, blew into his wheel gun. For a split second, a smirk appeared on Xander's face.

Few laps later, another successful pit stop with Ted was done. No more stops, time to finish. And finish they did. Ted on P6, Anola P8. Team members shook hands with each other as race engineers congratulated the drivers via radio. What had started as a difficult weekend for Kaylan ended up in the team earning 12 points from the Sprint Race. Once Ted and Anola had returned to the pit garage, they went on to receive a lot of pats on the back from team members.

Streets of Alikki-Corra Grand Prix - Sprint Race

Aldauren Ginintella continued to occupy the same seat in the PB-Viska paddock as in the feature race. In his youth, he was suffering from panic attacks at times, but now, he is able to take a moment to compose himself and realize the facts of the matter. This is important in his day to day concerns.

His words echo through the team, as they prepared their drivers to leave for their formation lap. Despite the very unfavorable situation they are in, the team is optimistic.

Artur, the chief strategist and the top guy from Viska who is in the team, commented that they can come back with a bang if they work the weather to their advantage.

He planned on letting both drivers fly through their laps on intermediates as soon as he saw the clouds and what appear to be impending somewhat rainy weather. This was a risky gamble. Some other teams elected to continue on slicks. If it did not rain, PB-Viska would surely end this race with zero points.

The Diarcesians in general are still relatively new to international racing, however, and it will be a big learning curve for the PB staff. They were doing their best to learn what they can from the more experienced Aurun counterparts in Viska, those little things that separate the good from the great. They are determined and confident that they can gain the necessary skills for Diarcesia to leave its mark as a racing nation.

The team principal has his more philosophical side. He experienced a lot of scenarios in motorsport, and he could utilize it so that PB-Viska will meet their challenges in the future. Making the right decisions and the most of the opportunities that are presented to them will be the key ingredients for long term success.

The race's early laps began as Artur expected, with light rain. The PF-1s running on inters were given a massive boon. Indra slashed through much of the rear midfield as the slick-runners scrambled to pit for more appropriate rubber. There was no time to waste, however, as they have 35 laps in total to score points.

As the event progressed, the team was enjoying a successful debut sprint race with the Preston engines and the Phoenician tires doing their part to assist the drivers. It seemed that a miracle run was always just around the corner, but Laura, already dealing with a recurrence of pesky gearbox problems, misjudged a turn and spun. That finally put the kibosh on her earning more points this week.

Vignette of the day: Indra Vartak's Astonishing P25 To Podium Drive

Image
Celebration during the end of the sprint race in a Diarcesian sports bar

Post-race

The Diarcesian media was buzzing after the news of the comeback of Indra Vartak from a feature race retirement and the ensuing dreadful starting position in the sprint race. The same couldn't be said for the Aurun fans of Laura Haukanna. Not only did she start at P19, but she is also suffering from external comparisons with Vartak's P2 finish from P25. Luckily, the team was still able to support the Aurun through her pain in the post-race aftermath. However, there is no denying that it was an emotional blow for PB-Viska's number one driver. Immediately ahead of them, there is a week to prepare to succeed in the next grand prix.

Aldauren Ginintella quotes

On his pivot to team running duties: "Some call me a genius, some call me a total waste of a driver, and some say I'm a now famous waste of a driver."

On this week's points haul: "I've never seen such a wild race weekend in my whole life. We only had one chance to get things right in the sprint race, and we hit it. I hope we have this consistency every week, and also see Laura and Indra shine."

Alikki-Corra, Vilita & Turori

Jorn Feister sat on the pit wall moments before the beginning of the sprint race in Alikki-Corra.

Looking out on the grid, he couldn’t be happier with the setting for the team. Joy Wingelaar starting P4, with a solid chance to make something happen from the front of the grid, and Heinz-Otto Junker after a strong showing yesterday starting the day P11.

The team had decided to try two different strategies on the drivers for the race. Joy would be starting on the hardest compound and hoping to stay out for the entire race. For Heinz, starting further back, the plan was to start on the supersofts, push hard to start the race then undercut and switch to the regular softs and manage till the end. For Heinz, the strategy allowed some flexibility in case of the weather - with rain in the forecast, inters might be needed.

Soon enough it was lights out, and time to manage the race again. Jorn was excited - this was, of course, the part any team principal lived for. And after the promising result yesterday, Jorn and the TMW engineers had their sights set high for the drivers today.

Lap 13

“Well done Joy! You are P1. Let’s keep this up!” Kaspar Flugel’s words went out over the radio to Joy as she managed to make an excellent move on Ted Pressley to take the lead of the race.

Jorn turned to give Kaspar a big pat on the back, and to see the group on Joy’s side of the garage celebrating wildly. He couldn’t help but smile as he looked back at the telemetry data. Leading the race, with Heinz surging through the pack behind - things were looking very good indeed for the team.

Lap 15

“Heinz, box for the inters. Rain is picking up and it’ll be a boost for us as the race goes on,” said Oliver Werich.

It was a tough call to make for the team - if the rain didn’t continue, the call would certainly be the wrong one and Heinz’s race would be over. But with Joy running P1, the team felt confident taking a bit of a risk. Heinz wasn’t as sure.

“Are you sure? I’m doing well on these tyres, inters might be too much of a risk.”

“Heinz, we feel the risk is worth it given the current weather, taking the risk allows us to get the jump on the other teams.”

The pit stop went perfectly, and Heinz rejoined in good track position. Within a few laps, he was gaining some ground on the tyres, which eased some of the nerves around the pitwall.

“Lots of time left,” said Jorn.

Lap 28

“Next car behind is Heinz, on fresher tyres.” said Kaspar to Joy.

Nervous times on the pitwall.

Oliver Werich turned to Jorn. “Need to let Heinz past. He’s on the fresher compound, Joy’s tyres are wearing down, it’s not worth risking a fight. We risk letting the field behind catch.”

Kaspar Flugel shook his head. “Joy’s earned the fight. If we keep them together we can pull away, hold P3 and 4, and then maybe later in the race if Heinz is still faster see.”

“The longer Heinz is behind, the harder it’s going to be to catch up ahead,” said Werich.

“We’re not close enough for that to really matter, and Heinz is going to be able to defend better on the newer tyre. Let Joy build a bit of a gap, so Heinz has some room to maneuver - Vialiv is catching,” replied Flugel.

“You have to let Heinz by this lap, it’s not worth the risk. If they fight, we could fuck the whole race up,” Oliver said.

“I won’t give that order. Joy has had an excellent race, she deserves the chance at a podium.”

Jorn Feistel had heard enough. “ Oliver, you know I’m not going to just let him go. Heinz can pass, Joy can defend. That’s the only fair way to go about it. But tell them to be as careful as can be.”

There was silence on the pitwall as the cars came close together, a few nervous glances - but when Heinz did make it by safely, a good sigh of relief. Both race engineers hopped on the radio now.

“Great work Heinz, let’s chase down Vartak now.”

“Joy, great effort, not much we can do on the slower tyre. Just manage the tyres, we’re good for the rest of the way.”

Lap 35

“Fucking podium boys! Let’s go! ” The team cheered as Heinz-Otto Junker crossed the line P3, yelling with excitement over the radio and earning the first podium of his WGP2 career.

“All very proud of you, Heinz. P3. Joy P5, she had a great day too. They’ll be celebrating in Stelburg tonight!” said Oliver.

Jorn Feistel took the opportunity to hop on the team radio again, speaking to both of his drivers.

“Heinz, Joy, great race both of you! We’ve got some history made already - Heinz on the podium, and as a team, we’re currently sitting P1 in the constructor’s standings! Starting as we mean to finish, let’s keep this up. Looking forward to seeing you both to celebrate.”

It was important to Jorn to keep the spirits high in the team - little things like celebrating the good race both drivers had had went a long way, he thought at least. Looking up at the board, he was quite satisfied with how this race had gone - and happy with the respectful competition developing within the team. It was ok to have debates, like the one the team had in this race - as long as you avoided the problems that could often seep into teams. Luckily, Jorn had two great racers in the team, and he felt it wouldn’t be a problem.

The Podium

“Ladies and gentlemen, the champagne!”

Heinz-Otto Junker was overjoyed as he started to spray Indra Vartek and Chiruno Hakusoe on the podium. It was the first race event of the season, so it was firsts all around for the drivers, and they enjoyed the moment together.

Heinz came over the edge, spraying some champagne down onto the TMW team below. He gave a big smile as he looked down on all the members of the team. So many people who’d helped him get up here - Jorn and Oliver, all the guys from the strategy team and garage as well - this was their podium as well. He dropped the bottle down to them, letting the team share.

He smiled too at Joy and her dad, both celebrating as well. He was excited to race alongside her this season - they’d had a good solid battle, and it was good to see the friendly competition already developing. Coming down off the podium to celebrate with them all again, he said to Joy, “We need to get both of us up there next time!” He really meant it, too - a podium was an amazing feeling, but celebrating with his teammate and an excellent day for the team overall would be even better.

Finally, in the background of it all, he saw someone else. Gotthard Junker. With a big smile on his face, father and son embraced.

“A podium’s nice, but next time let’s have the anthem to go with it, eh?”

“We’re trying, dad.”
