The West Phoenician Scorpions were all cheers and whoops in the locker room last night after their victory against Juvencus with a final score of 78-54.
The win is very symbolic, yes it may have been a lower ranked team but this is the first International Basketball Championships that West Phoenicia has obtained 3 wins.

"Basketball is not one of the most popular sports in West Phoenicia. With Baseball , Archery and Water Polo being the sports that are getting the most endorsements and sponsors and Sports television airtime due to their winning streaks that are keeping fans glued to their screens. Basketball has struggled to get the recognition it deserves.

The International Basketball Championships has been the most productive way to woo in new fans. More wins will bring in new fans and sponsors to boost the Scorpions portfolio.

The Scorpions need to win there next game to progress in the direction they wish. Wanting to sit comfortably at the halfway point. Wanting to be ahead instead of playing catch up for the remaining games.

The next game will be one of the biggest challenges in this Championships as they take on Saint Kanye in a do or die which will decide if the Scorpions have what it takes to march on.
The Scorpions will take on Saint Kanye who until there loss against Cosumar had played a flawless game.

West Phoenicia will need to play hard to outplay Saint Kanye and avoid unnecessary fouls that could award Saint Kayne unnecessary baskets.

Meanwhile West Phoenicia plans to use their cheerleaders to entice the opposition into focusing their attention away from the court and onto the skimpy outfits the Scorpionettes play to wear as they cheer for their team.

Team Manager Andrew Lesbos has stated may the best team win, and in saying that i mean the Scorpions.

Unknown stadium
Unknown city, Azadeshia
Matchday four of the 24th International Basketball Championships group stage

Everything had been going so well for Abanhfleft that at this point, everyone was expecting the team to finally slip up somewhere sometime. It was inevitable that Abanhfleft would slip up and lose a game, and with Jazz Higgs sidelined due to that horrific injury he suffered against Kita-Hinode back in matchday one of the group stage of IBC 24, the time was very much ripe for Abanhfleft to spectacularly lose against teams of which the likes of Azadeshia were very much included.

It wasn't that Azadeshia sucked at basketball (well, at this point they probably do, now that they had sidelined center Govind Navathe and kept him out of the hardcourt for reasons as yet unknown but rumored to be involving locker room friction with the other Azadeshis) but, as an unranked team, they were typically the kinds of teams that Abanhfleft was expected to roll over every time they met. And that also meant that they had a very prime chance of throwing a spanner into the works of the Rebolusyonaryos' campaign to win a second IBC title. And that was almost what happened tonight. With a 10-point advantage over their opponents, the Fleftics were somehow able to let the Azadeshis claw those ten points back and even allowed Azadeshia to experience the feeling of what it was like to lead Abanhfleft in a game of basketball before Newt Isaacs leveled off the game from the top of the key to force overtime. Now, five minutes had come and gone, and with only three seconds left, the score was tied at 75-75. No one on the Fleftic side was sure that they had enough gas in the tank left for another five minutes. The same couldn't be said for Azadeshia, who looked to have been really invigorated by the fact that they were able to draw level and at one point lead the Rebolusyonaryos. This contest had to be decided within these last three seconds, and at this point the Fleftics almost didn't even care about who won just as long as this game finally ended.

"Vern!" Ivan Opanasenko, the Pridnestrovian coach of the Fleftic national basketball team, called out to Vern Goldman, the young center who had taken Jazz Higgs' spot in the roster for the rest of the IBC during Abanhfleft's final timeout. "Come over here! Don't get too comfortable on the bench just yet. I'm sending you back out again."

"Really, coach?" Vern asked. "Are you sure about that?"

"Positive," Opanasenko replied. "Dylan needs a rest. He says he can feel his muscles twitching from underneath his skin. If he plays any more, I fear he may cramp up and we'll lose another player once again. I know you can do a good job out there. Just mark your man and make sure that there's at least one player out there who has an open shot. Do you hear me?"

"Yes, coach," Vern replied. "I hear you."

The timeout came to an end, and Dylan Kapowski's substitution by Vern Goldman was made official. The referee handed the ball over to Jan Harris, who was going to inbound the ball. He easily picked out Leo Baxter through the crowd of Azadeshi arms trying to disrupt his aim. Leo grabbed the ball in midair and dribbled once. Two seconds. Leo took a few steps and tried to find an open space from which to shoot but Sayana Navathe stuck to him like white on rice and he realized that he needed to move the rock or else risk getting double-teamed.

One second. Suddenly Vern Goldman appeared out of nowhere, his hand rising up above the heads of everyone else, calling for the ball. Leo tossed the ball to him as he had no choice anyway. The toss was too high, but it didn't matter for Vern, who at six feet ten inches was way taller than any of his teammates on the court, and he jumped up and reached for the ball with his fingertips. He felt his index, middle, and ring fingers hit the leather and he used this touch to redirect the ball onto a downward trajectory towards the basket. Just in the corner of his eye he could see the clock winding down by the millisecond. One-fifth of a second. Vern let go of the ball, hoping that he had done enough to score the winning basket.

Swish.

And just like that, Vern Goldman became an instant celebrity in the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft for winning the Rebolusyonaryos their fourth game in a row in the 24th International Basketball Championships.

SBF Office
San Marco, Filindostan

The personnel of the Samahang Basketbol ng Filindostan (SBF) scheduled an emergency meeting after the poor performance the Filindostani teams had during the latest edition of the International Union of Basketball Clubs (IUBC). They discussed the possible solutions for their crisis. One of the discussed solutions is to relax the rules on imports, which teams are currently divided. The meeting included high-ranking officials of the SBF, along with team governors, representing the eight teams of the Filindostani Basketball Association (FBA).

Charito "Charie" Pamungkas - SBF Chairwoman
Liesbeth "Lies" Siahaya - SBF board member
Ennito "Nits" Sariraya - SBF board member
Marco "Comar" Nuswang - SBF board member
Redevido "Devi" Totkantan - SBF board member
Renan "Nan" Rustico - Team Governor (Venividicci)
Baruch "Baruch" Bawo - Team Governor (Jakulta)
Lot "Lot" Sibayang - Team Governor (Perbotres)
Zina "Zina" Harahap - Team Governor (Perbodos)
Thelma "Thel" Sitanala - Team Governor (Perbouno)
Asistio "Astong" Salumbides - Team Governor (Fortunas)
Engr Ricardo "Ricar" Sta. Maria - Team Governor (Fipocor)
Dinah "Dinah" Sinusinga - Team Governor (Tanjung Pagi)

Charie: We are here in this meeting to discuss important matters. First, I am not happy at all on what happened on the IUBC. Perbouno and Jakulta did not even made the secondary tournament, and Venividicci were winless in the IUBC Trophy. We are looking for solutions. This is not an avenue to trashtalk other team's failures. We need to improve our basketball league. That's the bottomllne.

Nan: Our team did their best to win the games, the opposition is just too damn strong.

Nits: You should think positive. That's why we lose games, all because of your losing mentality.

Astong: Hmpf. If Fortunas instead participated in the Group Stages, we would have better chance.

Baruch: Hah, you didn't even made the group stages.

Astong: So were you, you even didn't make it to the group stage of the Multive-- what is it called again...

Charie: Tone down your voices. We're here to discuss, not to gloat on your failures.

Lot: We have sent a notice to other nations if they want to be an import for the FBA..

Engr RIcar: Ah, but you can see, they're still not allowed to play in the first conference, where almost sixty percent of the season is concentrated on that.

Charie: Ricar's right. Maybe we shouldn't have released it yet.

Dinah: What's done is done. Now what we can do is improve on what we informed to the other nations.

Nan: I have an idea. First we abolish the conferences. Just a series of round robin matches. Best team wins and qualifies for IUBC. Discussion done, let's go home.

Baruch: Hm, let's see about that. The question is... is one foreigner maximum enough?

Engr Ricar: One's enough, we even cannot afford to sign one. (then stares to Baruch, Nan, and Astong)

Nan: What we can do is have at least eighty percent of our roster be Filindostani for the entire season?

Charie: Not a bad idea. Any more suggestions?

...
...
...

Charie: Okay, let's draft this out. We need to finalize this soon enough.

After an additional hour, the meeting adjourned, with a resolution ready to be announced at a later date. Meanwhile, Nan, having suggested most of the reforms, grabbed his phone, dialed a number, and talked on it.

Nan - on the phone: Are the paperwork ready? We think we can change the rules a little bit there. Now we can sign them. I cannot afford to give at least one of them to our rivals. That would be disastrous. Prepare the contract to them now. Pronto.

Seems that Nan had a plan all along - to make his team more dominant for the upcoming domestic season?

BASKETBALL
HBL Inside - Mugenishima Islanders, Uranai Déesses

While the Hinodejin squad somehow stamped a Chromatika-based side, without actively brawling with each other, one has to wonder what exactly are the two teams that catapulted this national squad crisis: the Mugenishima Islanders and the Uranai Déesses. Well, sit down and prepare yourself, for I shall tell you, the reader (or readers) of this illustrious webpage dedicated to the surviving Sunrisians about last season's finest teams in the league and what exactly happened before the season where they both topped the HBL with the same amount of points, a first in league (if not Hinodejin Basketball itself) history.

The Uranai Déesses are one of the league's original teams, having been founded in 2080 as the Uranai La Déesse Chevaliers, where the team, representing the state of Tsutsuji, often travelled north to visit teams from neighbouring state Somei-Yoshino. In fact, it was because of this that the team was invited to join the upstarting Hinodejin Basketball League. Playing in green and yellow, the team was then renamed Uranai Déesses, abiding by a rule of the league, that teams were not to include their sponsors in their names, with the sole reasoning behind their new name being even allowed was the fact that the Déesse is considered a very important figure in Tsutsuji culture.

At first, the Déesses failed to light the league on fire, usually as a middle-table team, winning the wooden spoon as the last placed team in 2089. Uranai started to spark in 2093, where a team featuring three alumni from the fabled Senso-Shukujo Ladies' High School in the back line (Kaeru Minaya, Ami Suzuki and Yui Fukui) that would elevate the team's level considerably. Under this trio, Uranai would claim three of its' five titles, while Ami Suzuki alone helped them obtain the fourth and later, as a manager, led them to the fifth trophy. A respectable franchise that might've grown a bit too cocky due to its' status as the sole Tsutsuji team.

Mugenishima joined the league in 2099, having spent three seasons as an amateur team. The team joined the league, in theory, to replace the former seventh team of the league Kanibaru Tambourineers, infamous for their single season, an affair that saw the team finish at the bottom of the league with a 2-34 record and that would finally cause them to leave the league and later cease to exist, although the time between the Tambourineers and the Islanders was rather large, a total of fourteen years. The Islanders struggled at first but soon rose up to the challenge, although not to the point of properly winning the league. In fact, the Islanders would only win the league in 2130, having seen teams such as the Raimunejima Thunder, the Neonishima Lights and the Sirena Cavaliers, all three younger and from Somei-Yoshino as well, winning the title.

The team's resurgence goes back to trainer Yujifume Waruki as his scouting practices have led the team to raid university squads and form what could be considered one of the finest squads the HBL has to offer. While a fairly capable manager, Waruki talks way more than he should and as a result, earned the ire of many a team in the Hinodejin landscape, although he clearly harbours way more hatred for the Uranai Déesses, a team that contributed to the freezing of his favourite team, the Hokuto Bullets and later helped the Bullets return via relocating to the nearby city of Hinode. Nobody has yet to come up with the reasoning behind this move, but all Waruki cares for is revenge. Yet, here we are, playing as a team. Go figure.

Vangazi Play Defensive Game

The Vangaziland Royals entered this season toting a high-powered offense. Many forecast at least one or two games past the century mark. The replacement of the team's tried and true role-players with Olympiad stars was meant to boost the offensive power of the team. Still, they can't seem to shake efficient Vannish basketball.

"I'm not going to be like the last coach and harp on the team for not scoring", said Coach Foyelson. "That's just the style. We know we'll need to score more points against top teams like Abanhfleft and Ethane. But I trust and have faith that if we do get the chance, we'll make something of it."

The Royals faced unranked Hispania y Filipinas on Match Day 4. This game was less close than most of Vangaziland's games from the start, as the Royals seemed in control from tip off.

"I didn't think we were aggressive enough", said Christopher Ironwrought. "If we played like this against the Free Republics, we would have lost that game."

Some see it as a jab towards Hectare Yulssen. After a more aggressive first three games, a return to isolation play has seeped into the Vannish offense. The ball gets held up top, usually while Yulssen works up a melodramatic crossover.

He was asked about the Vannish guards and their handle before game 4. "It's just another angle of our repertoire. It's an added thing for the fans. It's just in the spirit of the game."'

Yulssen would tally 12 points and 9 assists. Ironwrought would score 18, a number he seemed unhappy with.

"If 18 gets us wins, so be it", said the 6'7 swingman. "Maybe it just wasn't my night to be hot. But we need to keep our offense sharp."

Yulssen saw things differently. "Defense is our thing. It's who we are. Even when our offense is set at it's highest, our defense is still key. It's just a matter of what we can do once the playoffs roll around."

The Royals look to face Mufsana for Game 5.

IBC 24: TRAMPLED!
Cosumarites shackle Kanyeans for 4th straight win

by Claude Harlan

RAMUSOK - The St. Kanye Surge national basketball team was limited to just sixty points today, as the home team Cosumar Stallions usurp the top spot in Group 5 of the 24th International Basketball Championships with a 4-0 record. Big Tozin Summata led the scoring for the white-clad #14 squad with 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

"Our heads were held underwater", said Surge captain Brock Dotson, who was limited to eight points in the 71-60 loss. "Those Stallions showed that their defensive game can be as good as the offense which they are already known for. We missed shots and coughed the ball up, and we were unable to stop them this time." "Now we have to win more than them [Stallions], and against them [in their next meeting, which will be at the Surge's home court], to reclaim the top spot in our group and avoid facing tougher opponents early". added Victor McLain, who shot only three of his ten three-point attempts, and a freebie, for a total of ten points. Cosumar scored the game's first seven points before McLain made his free throw with 7:04 remaining in the first quarter. Then the Stallions struck again, this time with a 13-4 run. Trailing 20-5 at the 4:11 mark, the Surge called a timeout. They scored ten more points after that timeout, but unfortunately so did Cosumar.

Three successive baskets by the purple-clad Kanyeans cut the lead to nine, 30-24, at the start of the second half. However, the Stallions would hold the Surge scoreless for more than six minutes afterwards, only allowing a putback by Klaus Muhlenberg at the 1:56 mark, the Cosumarite lead doubling eighteen, 44-26, after the shot. The Stallions could only make another shot, courtesy of Rugian Na'Rel, to try and put his team up by twenty before halftime, but he also fouled Michael Porter on a layup attempt just before the buzzer sounded. Porter made both free throws to make it 46-28, the Stallions still leading. The third and fourth quarters mainly consisted of St. Kanye chipping away at the lead, but then succumbing to yet another Cosumarite run. The Kanyeans could only make a run of their own in the last two minutes, but by then their opponents have taken a sizable lead. Nevertheless, they managed to draw shooting fouls from the Cosumarites and make quick buckets, but still came up short by eleven points. A very tired McLain could be heard muttering after the game, "It's over. Glad it's over. To hell with that."

The Kanyeans hope to return to their winning ways when they return to Kardashia's Pencurve Arena tomorrow, against the 26th-ranked West Phoenicia Scorpions. "We'll look at what went right whenever we won and concentrate on that. We'll also look at what went wrong tonight and try to avoid that". said Kanyean assistant coach Bernard Foley.

Scores:

COSUMAR 71 - Summata 17, Scanlon 13, Kvotirkoy 8, Skannendev 8, Stanton 7, Cross 5, Herjulfsson 4, Na'Rel 4, Rudnevs 4, Kamara 1, Kuhn 0, Va'Devu 0.

PRIDNESTROVIA PERFORMING "AT THE EXPECTED LEVEL" IN THE 24TH INTERNATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

By Barrikad Adzhitekov

Kevin Middleton of the Pridnestrovian national basketball team takes a breather during one of the many stoppages of play against Bjornoya Islands in the 24th International Basketball Championships.

TIRASPOL - The Pridnestrovian national basketball team are performing at the expected level, right exactly where one would expect them to perform, according to the national team coach Wolf-Dietrich Dungler. These words come during the group stage break just before the team, as well as the teams of the 47 other nations participating in this tournament, prepare to embark on the second half of the group stage where they will finally be able to determine their fates, which ranges from qualification to the knockout stages or an ignominious exit at the group stage. Some will barely scrape into the next stage while others will rue all the chances they had missed in the earlier games. But what is for certain is that only sixteen nations will move to Newmanistan for the knockout stages and, depending on how this second half of the group stage goes, Pridnestrovia could be among those sixteen nations or it could not.

When Pridnestrovia announced its intention to enter the International Basketball Championships, the task of assembling said national fell upon the 36-year-old Wolf-Dietrich Dungler. Dungler, who was from the city of Eggolsheim-Neuses in the Ixanian Socialist State and had played for the local basketball team, Index Eggolsheim-Neuses before making the leap to Fleftic professional basketball in 2007, joining the Dorfdifving Steel as an undrafted free agent when he was twenty years old, and he was part of the team that made it all the way to the Central Conference Finals before they were beaten by the Markovsky Red Army four games to two. The first part of Dungler's career in Abanhfleft lasted only one season however before the Holy Catholic Revolution enveloped the country in 2008 and caused the shortening of the 2008-09 FBA season to just 50 games, but Dungler didn't get to play that season as he had elected to return to Pridnestrovia and Index that year. Dungler eventually returned to Abanhfleft and the Steel, helping them win the 2010 FBA Finals against the Port Thimpodopoulos Engineers (now known as Real Haritzaga Baloncesto after moving from the capital city of the Fhulghamous Peninsula colony in Esportiva). However, Dungler's career would be cut short with a series of foot and knee injuries culminating in an ACL tear in 2016 which sidelined him for the entirety of that season before he eventually announced his retirement from playing professional basketball in 2018 at just 31 years old.

During the time in which he was recovering from his injuries, Dungler had taken the time to learn about coaching in basketball, hoping that this would keep him in contact with the sport and his fellow players. This would later be a blessing in disguise as two years following Dungler's retirement, he was hired by the Samal SeaDogs of the Oontaznik Basketball Association (OBA) first as an assistant coach and then, when the team and their head coach parted ways, Dungler eventually became the SeaDogs' head coach, leading them to their first All-Oontaznik Conference Cup in 2022. This winning performance attracted the attention of the Pridnestrovian Basketball Union, which was contemplating entry into the International Basketball Championships after the Pridnestrovian Basketball Super League formally integrated into the International Union of Basketball Clubs (IUBC). Despite the offer of a three-year contract from Samal, Dungler decided that it was time for him to return home and manage his country's national basketball team.

In his search for players to fill out the national basketball team, Dungler relied mostly upon Abanhfleft's college system as a scouting system. A number of young Pridnestrovian ballers had made their way to Abanhfleft's shores to participate in a better college basketball system, and with Abanhfleft's teams regularly participating in the last few editions of the NSCAA, Dungler knows that these Pridnestrovians would have gained vital international experience with their colleges. One of Dungler's first recruits to the national basketball team was Releinthi National and State College's Fotij Nochevski, younger brother of Pridnestrovian men's national football team international Branislav Nochevski, so it could be said that this basketball team already has some sporting pedigree in it. Other important collegiate recruits for the team include Ajdin Smajic and Nikanor Liamaeu, both from the University of Santa Magdalena.

Image

On the subject of veteran experience, Dungler called upon his friend and fellow FBA veteran Leonid Zheltov,, who after ten seasons of faithful service to the Malabon Black Ops was now back in Pridnestrovia with BC Admiral Novorossiysk. At 39 years old, Zheltov will certainly be the oldest player to be fielded by Pridnestrovia, and according to unofficial sources within the national basketball team, this will be Zheltov's one and only IBC campaign, but if he instills in the team the same levelheaded determination and quiet steel and vigor that he used to provide for Malabon and currently provides for Admiral, then this team will be very much prepared for future campaigns. And, through careful politicking in the halls of the State Duma, Dungler was able to add Fleftic journeyman Kevin Middleton to his roster by way of giving Middleton Pridnestrovian citizenship just in time for the IBC. Middleton, who was a promising small forward with the Selid Stars of the FBA before he ended up jumping from team to team in Abanhfleft, Pridnestrovia, and the Sultanate of Oontaz, will add both flair and a steel backbone to the bench of the national basketball team.

Image
Leonid Zheltov of the Pridnestrovian national basketball team, shown here in action for BC Admiral Novorossiysk in the Pridnestrovian Basketball Super League.

As for the games themselves, they were very much a mix of what is good and what is bad in this team. They opened their inaugural IBC campaign with a close victory over Qasden, who were co-hosts of the previous competition with Abaja, and where a most curious chapter in the story of international basketball occurred when an ambassador of the Glorious Republic of Saint Kanye was abducted by a Fleftic terrorist group in order to force the IBC Council to declare all of Saint Kanye's championships null and void and subsequently award those championships to Abanhfleft, only for that particular terrorist cell to be taken down by a combined force of Fleftic, Kanyean, and Empire of Catsian special forces just in time for the good ambassador to appear and hand the IBC trophy to the victorious Saint Kanye Surge.

The win against Qasden was all about teamwork and coordination, and both of those factors went out the window when Pridnestrovia went up against Lata Eden, who like Pridnestrovia had come into this contest without a rank. Pridnestrovia's performance in this game was simply abysmal; no one was talking to each other and communication was simply non-existent. This game was a game of individual performances, of Fotij Nochevski scoring 20 points and Kevin Middleton racking up 15 points, but it is noteworthy to point out that comparing this game to the previous one against Qasden, we can clearly see that the national basketball team completed 30 assists against Qasden while they could muster up only a paltry 13 in comparison against Lata Eden. Communication and cooperation has certainly become a problem for the team, at least against Lata Eden.

Pridnestrovia appeared to have learnt their lesson following that chastening defeat, or at least that was what people were thinking when they trounced Bjornoya Islands 88-58, but then the same thing happened again when Pridnestrovia went up against Dunnes, and this resulted in an 84-61 loss to the aforementioned nation on matchday four of the group stage. On matchday five, Pridnestrovia went up against the host nation, Newmanistan, and while they lost this game as well, at least this time the national basketball team gave a good accounting of themselves even as Newmanistan triumphed over the Pridnestrovians by eleven points.

Image
Head coach Wolf-Dietrich Dungler of the Pridnestrovian national basketball team calls out orders and plays to the team during the game against Newmanistan, host nation of the 24th International Basketball Championships.

Coach Dungler's words about this team are very telling. He said that the team is performing just as he expected. What does he mean by that? Does he mean that he has expected his team not to gel all the time, hence their currently poor placement in the group table? Or does he mean that he has expected this team to perform poorly because they haven't had the time to perform as well as he would have wanted them to do? All this is still up in the air, but Dungler is quietly optimistic about this team. "All they need is a word of soft but firm encouragement to get themselves motivated and up to speed," he said in an exclusive interview with PTsNA. "These are a good bunch of talented players and hard workers. And if the quiet method doesn't work then there is always sticking a boot up their bottoms!"

If Pridnestrovia is to succeed then Wolf-Dietrich Dungler will surely have to use this combination of the carrot and the stick to get the national basketball team over the line.

BASKETBALL
HBL Inside - Raimunejima Thunder, Hapurona Tropics

Off-week means more HBL Inside, where you get to learn about your favourite (and not so favourite) HBL teams that you probably missed at least twenty or more seasons of existence. Last time, we talked about the feud between the Mugenishima Islanders and the Uranai Déesses and how it affected the national team in particular. This time, we again cover two teams, although this time they don't hate each other: the seven-time champions Raimunejima Thunder and the... well... respectable team but still titleless Hapurona Tropics.

The Raimunejima Thunder were one of the founding teams of the Hinodejin Basketball League and right out of the gate, presented a mix of impressive talent and quality rookies, a result of drawing from the amateur leagues based out of the factories of Raimunejima, most notables being the Raimunejima Solar Power Plant and the Mizuki Printing Factory. The team became a team of the blue collar worker and of the blue-collar player as well, a fact that has been since incorporated by the team into their uniforms. A player that gets signed by the Thunder is expected to be, above all, a team player and egotistic players get the boot straight away.

The Hapurona Tropics are... a rougher topic. History lesson time: In 2093, the Hinodejin Empire moved its' capital for the first time ever, leaving the city of Hokuto, a city named after one of the many heroes that went through the Seven Trials of Arceus, to the city of Kanshiro, the former capital of the Kingdom of Korea that had recently been absorbed through marriage (and vassalship) into the empire. Following that year, the city of Hokuto lost a lot of its' power and fame, businesses moving out of the city to the capital (or to the state capital, Hinode) and soon enough the former nation's capital became sort of the crime centre of the nation.

Hokuto, at that time, had been at an odd position sports-wise. Football saw the former Constelado Hokuto break up into the Hokuto Rangers and the Hokuto Senateurs, both teams blooming into respectable sides despite a lack of fortune, relying heavily at the city's youth and operating at a deficit, just to connect with the city more, hoping that time (and political efforts) would clean the city again. The third team, the Hokuto Bullets, saw things differently. The team had an owner, Yo Nakajima, and he had been disgruntled at how the team, regardless of their performance, barely saw any profit. This sort of attitude would eventually drop from all leagues, but at the time, the Hokuto Bullets simply started to lose too much money.

Nakajima would try, and successfully obtain, a ruling that allowed him to hold player wages as long as it guaranteed the team's profit. This was possibly the largest oddity to ever happen in Hinodejin sports and not too long after that decision, the roster chose to protest, and not take part in sixty of the seventy matches of the league. Following the end of the season, Nakajima was allowed to leave the league and retain whatever money he made while the Bullets' registration would be frozen. The Bullets could return to the league if a proper set of owners could be found and the city's situation improved. After a bit of lobbying, the condition was broadened to only a set of owners, taking the city of Hokuto out of the page entirely.

The league, at the time, saw fit to send the players of the frozen Bullets to either all teams or to form a new squad. The Uranai Déesses (also responsible for that little move on the owners' part) suggested the team took a very lucrative deal from the hotels of the city of Hapurona, one of the many coastal tourist centres of the state of Sakurahana. And thus, the Hapurona Tropics were born, fielding at first the players from the Bullets (including one very bitter SG Yujifume Waruki) before introducing some of that local talent teams of the HBL usually make use of.

The Bullets would return to the league in 2115... out of Hinode. But that's a thing for another episode.

Yulssen - Franssen Relationship On Rocky Road?

With the Vangaziland Royals IBC season underway, it comes as a bit of a surprise that one of the Empire's most high profile relationships hasn't yet been seen in public. Race car driver and WGP2 principal Jessica Franssen has dated Hectare Yulssen for some time now. She has often been seen courtside, pointed out by TV cameras and even interviewed occasionally.

The couple has been less public since the hectic WGP2 season, one in which Hectare visited a few races. He was asked about touring race days on a late night talk show, weeks ago.

"It seems like she didn't want me around", he told the talk show host. "She'd say 'no, you don't have to come this week. This country's too warm for you.. Yadda, yadda, yadda." He went on, "She'd say, 'oh the food's not that good. You wouldn't like it. Come out in two weeks'."

But they would get together when Jessica flew into Vangaziland.

"I'm just really busy managing the team", Franssen said to a blogger at the time. Gossip guides have swamped their relationship from the start. "I'm focusing on my drivers.. Coaching them... I'm a coach", she said a bit nervously.

Jessica will be in town to watch the Royals face Tropicorp. She's familiar with the land which also fields cars in WGPC sanctioned events. "I'll be interested to see how the two teams mesh on the court", she said. "The folks at Tropicorp know what they're doing and they'll figure out this basketball thing soon enough."

Franssen has been seen with former driver Jenna Vandersen since the end of the WGP2 numerous times. Recently, they went on a week long skiing trip in Imperial Hills where they shared a suite.

"She knows I don't like to go skiing", Hectare said. "So I'm glad they're can go together."

Vandersen ended a storybook relationship with wealthy, international traveler Kate Anne about 18 months ago. It was a bad breakup with lots of public visibility.

"We're best friends", Baroness Vandersen told us over the phone, about Franssen.

"It's always more motivating when Jess comes to visit. I'm sure we'll go out afterwards and explore the town."

IBC 24: SURGE SURVIVE SCORPIONS' STING
Yeezies get groove back against W. Phoenicia

by Ray Wright

KARDASHIA - After scoring a mere sixty yesterday in the away defeat against the Cosumar Stallions, the St. Kanye Surge national basketball team got back its shooting touch and dropped a hundred and ten on the West Phoenicia Scorpions. The 110-79 win thus pushes St. Kanye's record up to 4-1, tied with Cosumar at the top of Group 5 as we head into the mid-group stage break of the 24th International Basketball Championships.

Victor McLain once again led the scoring for the Kanyeans, who wore their home whites at the Pencurve Arena here. Yesterday he had just ten points, but today McLain scored 23, including six of seven threes. Ezekiel Lucknow's 18 points led the way for the Scorpions, who dropped to 3-2.

The Surge's Rakim Roberts beat opposing center Mohammed Al Taqir for the opening tip. The ball went into the hands of Kanyean captain Brock Dotson, who ran and after dodging two defenders, bounce-passed to Alex Martin. Martin ran to the three-point line, stepped back, and drew contact from West Phoenician point guard Abraham Sturt for a potential four-point play. Martin made the free throw for a 4-0 Kanyean lead, but the Scorpions tied it up with two quick shots from Lucknow and Curtis Windfall. Neither team pulled away after an exchange of baskets, that is until McLain made a three, Scorpion SG Li Chen Wu couldn't answer at the other end, and Roberts tipped in Michael Porter's miss and drew a foul from Al Taqir. Roberts completed the three-point play to put the Surge up 18-12, 3:27 remaining in the first quarter. With only ten seconds remaining in the quarter and trailing 13-19 (both teams managed a split at the line), West Phoenicia had a chance to cut the lead to four or three, but Lucknow missed a jumper and Al Taqir, trying to rebound, had the ball slip from his hands. Kanyean Michael Porter saved the ball from going out of bounds, then threw the ball to a running Martin. Martin was hounded by Li and Sturt, so he gave the ball back to Porter, who then executed a perfect alley-oop pass to Dotson, who went up for the dunk and a foul from Windfall, his second. Dotson missed the freebie, however, and the first frame ended with the Surge ahead by eight.

West Phoenicia's foul woes continued in the second quarter. Windfall got his third for charging against Jayvon Duff, and was benched subsequently. Reserve Jimmy Navy was put in for him, with Timothy Navy (presumably Jimmy's brother) also coming on, for Lucknow. Both were ineffective. Neither made a shot in the quarter (Jimmy would make his in the fourth), and the rest of the Scorpions still suffered from foul trouble. The Surge's extra free throws and possessions allowed them to increase their lead to thirteen, 50-37, as the two teams head to the locker rooms.

In the third quarter, the Kanyeans continued to keep their opponents at bay. The lead ballooned to twenty-four on the strength of St. Kanye's offense (a combined five out of five from beyond the arc in this period) and defense (three steals from Klaus Muhlenberg and two bloks from DeAngelo Norris, among the Surge bench's other contributions). Windfall, coming back on the floor for the Scorpions, got his fourth foul; both Li and Al Taqir were whistled for their third. The West Phoenician coaches refused to bench the three in the fourth though, most likely because they needed to score as much as they can and not rely on their bench, who have not been performing to expectations in this game. The Scorpions played St. Kanye even in the fourth quarter, somehow managing to not have their starters foul out. But it was too late, as the Surge ran away with their fourth win of the season.

"Our morale is back up after this win, after we felt it deplete at Cosumar". said Surge head coach Anton Spoletto. "We pretty much just needed the encouragement of the fans and of course, that desire to win", added Michael Porter. Tomorrow will be a tournament-wide break, in which several Surge players have expressed their decision to visit Abanhfleft's injured Jazz Higgs, while others will be staying in the Glorious Free Republic to rest and train (the next game after the break is a home game against the Juven). The crowd at Pencurve Arena is believed to have surpassed the previous crowd against Northwest Kalactin. "See, this is why this format seems to be a good idea", said Dennis Goldberg, 52, an arena official. "It's good both for business and for our own fans to show their support closer to home." No word on whether the nation would be willing to host a future edition of the IBC though.

Only four teams remain undefeated (5-0) after the first half of the tournament: the Abanhfleft Rebolusyonaryos, Drawkland Net Corp, Valanora Dragons and Vangaziland Royals. Also, two players return to their teams after being sidelined: the Northwest Kalactin Bashers' Ross Wilson (suspended for Matchday 3 and 4 due to fighting) and Azadeshian big man Govind Navathe (personal reasons; he will return in Matchday 6 against Platerdam).

GROUP 1: BANIJA 93, ETHANE 78
Banija continues to do things of note in this competition. Today they spoil the Ethanese's bid for a perfect first half of the group stages with this fifteen-point triumph.

GROUP 2: GRENOPIA 84, CENI 82
The Snakes fail to go 5-0 as well, dropping a close one to newcomers Grenopia.

GROUP 3: ABANHFLEFT 96, PLATERDAM 63
The Rebs get their fifth win in convincing fashion. "They look very dangerous even without [center Jazz] Higgs, what more if he returns?" said Surge reserve DeAngelo Norris.

GROUP 4: VALANORA 89, SPAAM 72
The Dragons get the upper hand in this battle of previously unbeaten teams, winning by seventeen.

GROUP 5: NORTHWEST KALACTIN 92, COSUMAR 76
A day after surprising the Surge, the Stallions get surprised themselves. They tie the Kanyeans at 4-1, but so far have the tiebreaker edge.

GROUP 6: FREE REPUBLICS 101, HISPANIA Y FILIPINAS 60
Today's blowout loss sends the Hispano-Filipinos into a three-game losing streak after winning the first two days of the tournament.

GROUP 7: DRAWKLAND 82, NATANIANS AND NOSTS 59
The Net Corp (5-0) post the highest point differential of all the teams, perfect or not, at +129 after dealing Natanians and Nosts a second straight loss.

GROUP 8: NEWMANISTAN 77, PRIDNESTROVIA 66
The Rockets blast the Red Army to join Qasden at 4-1. Pridnestrovia drops to 2-3.

IBC 24: Pula Agilas faces tough schedule, can determine their Group Stage fate

ETHANE - The Filindostan National Basketball Team are in a crucial set of games which may determine the fate of the team in the group stages of the International Basketball Championships 24.

After defeating no-names such as Zombie Nations (88-68) and Mithea III (74-67), the Pula Agilas will travel to Ethane to face the joint leaders. Coach Ciot rested their starters in the close win against the winless Mithea III, and his starters are re-energized and raring to go against one of the most defensive teams in the group.

"We must win this game if we want to move into the playoffs. It''s really important that we win this game and the next one. Our team, along with our today's opponents, Frenline Delpha, and Banija, are just one game within each other, and a loss for either of us would be catastrophic in our quest for the playoffs." Coach Ciot said in a pre-game conference.

When asked about the possible reforms that the Samahang Basketbol ng Filindostan is making to the domestic basketball scene, "This will help. I heard the teams had a disastrous campaign at the IUBC (International Union of Basketball Clubs) so they will look for foreign help to bolster the league." This statement from him is happening now, as the top dogs in Filindostan, Fortunas and Venividicci, are lining up moves that will shock the basketball world.

Back to the IBC, other matches in the group will see the two bottom teams face each other in Mithea III, and Frenline Delpha will host Banija in what would be another crucial match for the playoff spots and tickets to Newmanistan. Stay tuned to the Berita Filindo for the latest updates regarding the IBC 24.

IBC 24: KANYEANS EDGE JUVEN AT HOME
Second half of group stages begin

by Dante Dinkley

KARDASHIA - "Those Juven improved in such a short time. We definitely had to work harder for our win against them today than five days ago."

Those were the words of St. Kanye Surge national basketball team head coach Anton Spoletto, after his boys defeated the team from Juvencus, 72-65, at the Pencurve Arena in the capital of the Glorious Free Republic.

It was a game that went down to the wire. When in Matchday 1 the Surge dominated from start to finish, in this game neither team went up by more than seven at any point. Alex Martin, as with last time, topscored for St. Kanye with 16 points. Juven shooting guard Faustino Piazza had the same number of points to lead his team, who has not won a game in six tries.

The Kanyeans wore their black alternates, while the Juven went with purple. It was the latter, however, who drew first blood with an Edouard Sacco fastbreak layup off a steal. Martin responded by fading away for a three to put the Surge up by one, but the Juven soon recovered, and the lead see-sawed. At the end of ten minutes of action, it was the Yeezies who got the upper hand, 19-17, after Rakim Roberts blocked a potential game-tying, buzzer-beating jump shot by Juven power forward Pepito Perrot.

Borck Dotson of the Surge immediately gave up a foul on the three-point line to start the second period, and Piazza made all three shots to give Juvencus a 20-19 lead. However, Dotson would make up for what happened by making a three-point play and then a steal and assist to Michael Porter to make the score 24-20 in favor of St. Kanye. Vitale Accursio and Perrot each made a shot to equalize, though, and once again it would be a back-and-forth quarter, only this time the Juven prevailed, 39-38, as Martin missed a close shot that would've given his team the lead at halftime.

The Juven lead went up to seven to begin the third, as the Kanyeans committed a shot clock violation and then gave the ball up on a double-team. Juvencus would not give up this lead for most of the quarter, until the Surge, down 43-50 with 3:24 remaining in the third, called a timeout. They then went on a 13-2 run, led by Victor McLain and Porter, reclaiming the lead at 56-52 entering the fourth.

Juvencus would eventually lead 59-58 on a Giulio Abascal three at the 5:17 mark of the fourth quarter, but this would be the last time that they will do so in this game. The Surge would force a tie at 65-all with 2:08 left, thanks to McLain's corner trey. Then it was Juvencus ball, and the visitors use up most of the shot clock before trying to fire a three with Abascal once more. The shot missed, and the rebound goes to Accursio, but his putback gets blocked by Dave Samson. Abascal recovers and passes to Sacco, who throws an airball. McLain saves the ball and passes it to Norman Walker, but Walker has it stolen by Sacco, who drives to the hoop. Blocked by Roberts. Samson gets the ball, throws out of bounds. 1:23 left, Juvencus ball.

Abascal inbounds, passes to Perrot, who tries to pass to Accursio. Intercepted by Walker. Walker runs, uses up clock, waits for Samson, who passes to Martin. Martin goes for a deep shot and makes it with 1:02 left. However, it's just a long two. St, Kanye leads 67-65. Timeout, Juvencus.

Abascal inbounds once more, passes to Sacco, who returns it to Abascal, who dribbles the ball for some time before trying a three. Airball, and the ball goes to Martin, who is intentionally fouled with 0:45 remaining. Martin misses first, and makes the second. St. Kanye leads 68-65. Timeout, Juvencus - their last.

The Juven try for a quick shot with Piazza penetrating, but he is fouled by Samson in the act of shooting. Piazza misses the first, then launches the second, It spins around the hoop, then falls out. Roberts gets the ball and throws to Martin, who's on the run. Martin manages to bounce-pass to McLain at the three-point line. McLain launches, and is fouled by Perrot while going for the shot. The shot goes in, St. Kanye leads 71-65, with a chance to make it 72-65 with 0:29 remaining.

McLain misses the charity, and Juvencus recovers. Sacco grabs the ball and looks for an open man, but Martin picks him off and tries to drive. He is then hacked by Accursio as the shot bounces out. Martin makes the first free throw, then intentionally misses the second. Roberts rebounds, and the Surge dribble away the remaining 0:17 to head to their fifth win against a single loss.

The Pencurve Arena was packed, as with the previous two Surge home games, and the situation is expected to be the same tomorrow as the team battles 2-4 Eshan. After that is a game on the road against the Northwest Kalactin Bashers, home again to meet the Cosumar Stallions, before closing out the group stages at the West Phoenicia Scorpions' arena. "Home or away, we need your support for the games ahead, so please keep it up", said head coach Spoletto.

Scores:

ST. KANYE 72 - Martin 16, McLain 13, Roberts 13, Porter 10, Dotson 8, Norris 6, Duff 3, Muhlenberg 2, Schneider 1. Coyle 0, Samson 0, Walker 0.

JUVENCUS 65 - Piazza 16, Perrot 12, Sacco 11, Accursio 9, Abascal 7, Linville 5, Ramos 3, Tasse 2, Alunni 0, Micheli 0.

Quarters: 19-17, 38-39, 56-52, 72-65.

OOC: Continued from this.

Venividicci Club Office
San Marco, Filindostan

A couple of days after the SBF meeting, Nan was seen inside the office, probably finalizing some paperwork with regards to basketball club activity. In the same, cramped up office. personnel for the football team were finalizing details of the transfer of King out of the football club with Llamanean club New Llama Capitals. The office pace was frantic as there were numerous calls from other teams inquiring the availability of the players, football or basketball. Nan has told his people to put any transfer out of the basketball players on hold until he says so. But what is he waiting for?

Hours later, his assistant approached his desk.

"Sir Nan, someone's looking for you."

"Who is it?"

"Some person named... here, I'll show you" (assistant wrote the name on a piece of paper and showed it to him)

"Who the heck is he-- oh wait..."

He remembered the name. He had an appointment with the person today. He told his assistant to direct this person to the hotel where they will meet. Sangrila Hotel that is.

"Send him the directions. Oh wait. Book him a Gurab or Ober to the destination."

"Okay boss."

"Now get out of my sight. Geez. I'll prepare to leave the office. Move, pronto!"

Sangrila Hotel Room 1048
San Marco, Filindostan

Nan called the person of interest if he's already in the hotel. A few minutes later, he took an elevator to the tenth floor and entered the room. Here, he discussed something with this person, regarding some contract negotiations.

Nan: We have convinced the SBF to relax the rules of the import rule. They'll release the details of the changes in a few days time. So please hold off any disclosures or announcements before then, okay? Can I trust you with that? I want them both in my team. If one moves to my rivals, then we will have a hard time.

.
.
.

Nan: An also can you announce it not while your team is in our land? It may be very suspicious if you guys announce it right when your team is playing ours,
right? Thanks.

The meeting was finished at night, and a handshake agreement was already in place. The team governor is very careful not to divulge everything to anyone, as any mistake can cost them dearly.

The next couple of days had the SBF released their official statement on the changes they will be having for the Filindostan Basketball Association.

Changes to the Format of FBA Competition

The Samahang Basketbol ng Filindostan (SBF) is the basketball governing body of Filindostan, which oversees the development of basketball in the nation, including the organization of the domestic league, known as the Filindostani Basketball Association. As the first season of the FBA progressed, we have seen the development of the rivalries of the different participating teams.

An emergency meeting was conducted in the past few days with the team governors and our SBF board in light of the performances of our teams in International Union of Basketball Clubs (IUBC) competition. After careful deliberations, we have decided to scrap the current format of the FBA for next season. Described in the next paragraph will be the new guidelines governing the FBA competition from next year onwards.

On Team Composition
  • A total of 15 players may be registered by the participating teams.
  • At most three players of foreign origin can be registered by a team.
  • A team can only release players in the offseason.

On Competition Proper
  • Conferences are abolished next season onwards.
  • These conferences will be replaced by a single competition proper.
  • The eight teams will be facing each other six times, for a total of 42 regular season games.
  • The top team at the end of the regular season will qualify for the IUBC.
  • The top six teams will move on to the playoffs.
  • The playoffs will be conducted similarly as the Filindostan Football Festival: two teams will be placed at the lower bracket while the top four will face off in an upper bracket matchup.
  • If the team from the lower bracket finals beat the team from the upper bracket final, another match, a do or die match, will be held.

More information will be released soon. For the meantime, if you have any queries, direct them to the undersigned below. Thank you.

Charito "Charie" Pamungkas
Chairman, Samahang Basketbol ng Filindostan

Nan couldn't be any happier with what he saw. Finally he can close the deal... but first he has to wait for the right timing.

West Phoenician Scorpions hail game 6 victory against Northwest Kalactin.

The Scorpions came back after a shocking game loss to Saint Kanye. With a final score of 88 to 66 against Northwest Kalactin keeping them firmly rooted in 3rd place.

With 4 more games to go the Scorpions need to win all 4 games and pray to their deities for Cosumar and Saint Kayne to lose in a number of their matches to ensure the Scorpions a 1st or 2nd finish allowing them to progress in the championship.

The big moves need to be The Scorpions to defeat Cosumar and Saint Kanye two teams which are dominating the groupings at the moment.

BASKETBALL
Seung Min-Soo and the Jiangshi beat Abanhfleft, 91-61

After weeks of questionable play, the Hinodejin finally played like a unit. The results were clear as day, with the Hinodejin slamming Abanhfleft by a solid advantage on the score. The 30-points win certainly helps out the team's effort for a spot on the Round of 16, as they now lay behind three points from group leaders (who they just beat) Abanhfleft while keeping some distance from fellow groupmates Chromatika, Azadeshia and Platerdam. No hate, just sheer love. Love for the country? Well, love for the three points at least.

The game's most valuable player has to have been Seung Min-Soo. The Nishikoku native has been one of the team's good spots, as her experience and calm demeanour kept her from clashing with her teammates over the usual squabbles that the Hinodejin have been pretty much pushing against each other in this tournament. She leaves with a total of twenty-six points and twelve assists, a fairly remarkable result, given how she's usually a defensive player in her squad, the Maniwa Sharks. "I guess I just did that, right?" noted the experienced Center, "that's pretty cool."

TWIN THIEVES APPREHENDED
Sisters admit to hitting four malls for thousands in goods

by Natasha Hawthorn

Sophia (left) and Therese Farley.

BOMPTON - A pair of twin sisters, who have stolen an estimated 75,000 Coinyes (around NS$150,000) worth of goods from four separate malls last week, has been caught while attempting to enter one of the said malls.

Sophia and Therese Farley, both 25, were recognized from security camera footage by Bompton Metro Mall security guard Jayden Valentine as they showed up at the mall's entrance 7:30 am Kanyean time two days ago. The mall doesn't open until 10 am. The twins attempted to escape upon being noticed by Valentine, but were eventually subdued with the help of other guards before police came.

The Farley twins confessed to stealing from Bompton Metro Mall, as well as Shopper's Delight, Rich Discount Center and the Red Dinosaur Mall, and said that the stolen goods are all stashed in their condo unit in western Bompton. A search of the condo found unopened bags and boxes of clothes, cosmetics, jewelry and accessories, which were believed to be the items stolen from the said malls. Some of these goods were intended to be sold online for jacked up prices, while some, the twins said, were to be for personal use.
