“Chicanery is afoot,” He muttered under his breath.

“What was that, sir?” A voice called in from the hallway.

“Oh, nothing! Just trying to figure out what to tell the IFCF about this season of the Leaguealese.”

“This season? Can we really call it a season?”

“That’s sort of the problem. Something is seriously wrong here, but I don’t know how much anyone has noticed. I mean, if you’re not Mertagnians caring about a midfielder, who gives a damn about Legalese?”

He turned away, deep in thought.

“You know, you could say that we’re going through an existential, multiversal crisis that leaves us all wondering what exactly is going to happen.”

“Or, I could just say that the current season is ongoing, so given the deadline, we’ll resubmit the qualifiers from the previous season, and hope things shake out by then. Sounds lest angst-y.”

Cup Winners' Cup: Mar Sara FC

Valanora (VAL) Final Site Bids

IFCF Champions' League: The Battleground, Raynor City (78,000)

Located in the heart of the Eternal Empire's capital, The Battleground is a stadium with a bountiful history, having hosted World Cup Finals, numerous club Finals, and is home to the most successful team in Valanora's history in Raynor City United. It is the largest stadium in the nation and was constructed just over a century ago when the Empire first broached the idea of hosting international events inside its borders. Despite its age, it still has all the modern amenities that one could desire as United reinvest heavily their prize money into maintaining one the most premier stadiums in all of the Empire.

IFCF Cup Winners' Cup: Artani, Mar Sara (74,000)
The second largest stadium in the Eternal Empire, Artani is also the most recently built when Mar Sara FC moved from their old stadium of Donna Cathedral into the more modern gem of a stadium. Cleverly designed so that there is truly no bad seat in the entire stadium, Artani stands as an architectural marvel as well as a very festive footballing ground, routinely used by the VSC when the Empire is awarded hosting rights to tournaments.

Poafmersia (PFA) Final Site Bids
IFCF Challengers Cup: Dreamers Park (cap. 60,000), Fiskadaha City, Poafmersia
Dreamers Park is one of the 2 stadiums in the capital city of Fiskadaha City, and is one of the newer stadiums in the country. It features an artificial pitch, as well as a fully retractable roof, among other newer innovations. It is home to Fiskadaha FC, the only football club in the capital, and has been listed as the 2 alternate home fields for the Poafmersian national team (the other being Mancodas Complex).

FFI League of Victors: Mancodas Complex (cap. 60,000), Greater Mancodas, Poafmersia
The Mancodas Complex is part of the larger Mancodas Sports Hub, the biggest and largest sports complex in Poafmersia. It is home to a grand total of 1 multi-purpose stadium (mainly used for track & field and other events), 1 football stadium (Mancodas Complex), 3 outdoor Basketball courts, 5 clay tennis courts, 4 indoor sports halls (allowing the play of various sports, such as Badminton, Table Tennis, Handball, etc.), 1 swimming complex (featuring an Olympic-sized swimming pool), 1 open bay (for Open Water Swimmming activities), as well as a rock climbing wall, among other sports activities. It is well capable of hosting many sports as part of an Olympics bid, but with no interest in the Olympics, Poafmersia thus far has not fully hosted such an event. Nevertheless, the Mancodas Complex is a fully-equipped stadium, solely used for football activities, and is home to Mancodas Athletic FC, one of the oldest clubs in Poafmersia.

This is a "filler" season, just for me to have something to write in the next season. I'm not RPing it, and I'm okay with no RP bonus for it.

The Principality of Lisander, a sports loving, very highly developed nation in Astyria.
Disappointing people and missing deadlines since 2013.

Quebec and Shingoryeo (QUE) final site bids
CAFA LigAnaia III: The Reneegrad (capacity: 82,125)
The Royal Quebecois Football Association (RQFA) is bidding to host the CWC Final at The Reneegrad in Quebec City, considered to be the most important stadium in Quebecois football since its opening over twenty years ago. Home to the Quebecois National football team and the Coupe de la Reine, it is located in the independent city of Reneegrad located just south of the river that separates Quebec City from its adjacent cities. Built twenty-four years ago to host the third place match of the World Cup 77, it was built with state of art facilities and technologies available at the time and since then has seen renovations every five years. Among the renovations we have seen the additions of the three strips of ring-shaped video boards, one just under the roof and one in the middle-tier of the stands, inside and the statues of 10 Quebecois footballing legends outside the stadium's South Stand. On days without the Grim Reapers or Coupe de la Reine matches, the stadium is also connected to the RQFA headquarters and the Quebecois Football Museum and Hall of Fame by a 200m underground walkway.

NOTE: Should this CAFA bid be accepted, it is expected that re-construction of The Reneegrad begin immediately, with the stadium's re-opening to be completed at least a month before the CAFA LigAnaia III final.

Eura (EUR) final site bids
IFCF Champions League: Sasky Rising Memorial Stadium (Brigham, Eura, capacity 107,000)

The last time Eura hosted one of the "big two" major international club tournament finals was the 56th UICA Globe Cup final, a classic face off between a victorious Sabrefell Athletic of Nephara and a narrowly defeated Raynor City United of Valanora. War, national security risks and the previous admitted inflexibility of the Euran FA have prevented a Euran stadium from hosting another such final - until now. Those issues have all been washed away and the venue of that Globe Cup final, the Sasky Rising Memorial Stadium, is now applying to host the 8th final of the IFCF Champions League.

The SRMS, or "The Sasky" as fans have affectionately nicknamed it, is the second biggest sporting venue in Eura, and the biggest in the city of Brigham, despite the 76,409 seat Old Ham Lane nearby. It is most well known for its distinctive old fashioned bowl shape, its dark green and black colour scheme, a massive concrete superstructure surrounding the oval it forms and a short canopy roof stretching out from the back. The stadium was gradually expanded for years despite damage during a war or two, before achieving its distinctive current state over half a century ago. Since then it has been expanded further, and now it seats a massive capacity of 107,000 people. A recent programme of improvements completed two years ago saw the roof refitted, a massively upgraded concourse system and new security features.

Sport was first played on this site over a century and a half ago with the formation of Brigham Workers Football Club, which eventually became Revolutionaries, one of Eura's most iconic teams. It is very appropriate that they are the only Euran team to win the Champions Cup/Champions League twice. Aside from this club heritage and its history hosting the Globe Cup final, the SRMS has hosted Euran national team games, several Copa Rushmori fixtures, and various domestic cup finals over the years when Bastion Arena has been unavailable or an inappropriate choice. It has also been popular in use for other sports such as track and field athletics, rugby and even the Euran folk sport of "holdball".

It may not have the same flawless efficiency of the Bastion Arena due to geography and its development history, but the SRMS is nevertheless an impressive location for hosting major events. It is near the centre of the city of Brigham, one of Eura's megacities and therefore is close to at least two international airports. Road traffic can be brutal in Eura, but that's not a problem due to the nation's exceptional public transport infrastructure. Thousands of fans can be easily whisked to the stadium via Brigham's world class rail inter connectivity, allowing for direct access to the stadium by train straight from the airport, or even straight from another large city like Bastion.

Although the stadium's core structure is very old, it passes all of the extremely stringent safety regulations the Euran government sets for stadiums in the country, with some of the highest review grades in the country. It is fully seated with the exception of a safe standing system behind the goals taking up about 15,000 spaces. It has a high quality pitch with undersoil heating and active drainage, and plenty of space surrounding it for media and security needs as it has sometimes hosted other sports requiring a larger playing area, though the stands are still very close to the action. The corporate facilities are second to none after a series of upgrades over the years, as are the digital facilities which allow dozens of TV networks to broadcast games with world class quality in picture, sound and camera angle availability. Security is tight and provided by an experienced police force which regularly deals with the rowdy Revolutionaries support. Most importantly of all, the atmosphere here is phenomenal, and in the opinion of many unmatched by any other ground in Eura.

The seating allocation will be as follows;

- 45,000 (90,000 combined) seats for each set of fans, segregated in two parts of the stadium, half by half.
- 10,000 seats for neutral supporters, 5,000 of which are required by law to be sold to Euran citizens.
- 5,000 VIP and executive box seats.
- 2,000 seats will be left empty to segregate fans, bringing the total capacity if filled to 105,000 out of 107,000.

Hopefully this will be a momentous occasion for the sponsors, for Revolutionaries, the Euran FA and the Ministry of Sport, who all endorse this bid without equivocation.

SEASON 22 - RESULTS

The first United League season under the new 24-team format has come to a close, and boy was it an interesting one.

Starting from the bottom, the Manehattan Dragons, Crystal City United, and Appleoosa HC all fell victim to relegation this season. For Manehattan and Crystal City, this is nothing new, as both teams have been elevator clubs in recent years. For Appleoosa, however, it brings an end to nearly three decades of top flight hoofball. It's difficult to say if the Pioneers will be back in the United League anytime soon, given the dismal state of their squad, though the southern city will remain represented in the top flight by Sweet Apple City.

Speaking of which, Sweet Apple City was one of the four clubs flirting with relegation who managed to stay up this season, alongside Storm City HC, Mareseilles HC, and the Ponyville Galaxy.

A beautiful masterpiece of Equestrian magical engineering, the Stadium of the Two Sisters is a true cathedral of hoofball located near the heart of Canterlot. Though nowhere near as old as other iconic venues throughout the multiverse, there's no doubt that the Equestrian national team's home stadium is the country's best-known venue. The venue was designed to be a reflection of Equestria, combining natural beauty, magic, and modernity, which is best found in the stadium's magically-sculpted crystalline roof. With a seated capacity just under 100,000 ponies, the Stadium of the Two Sisters is no stranger to hosting major sporting events, including multiple World Cup, Cup of Harmony, AOCAF Cup, and Champions League Finals. Located within walking distance uphill from Canterlot's historic old town district, the stadium is easily accessible to hoofball fans staying in the city's many hotels.

1996 Saint Eleanor League (IFCF 8) - final table

Postby Saint Eleanor » Sun Sep 19, 2021 8:48 pm

IC: Jacob Hoskin was the last Tinhamptonian general to leave Saint Eleanor after his army was humiliated - and Eleanorian independence was declared - in 1975.

OOC:
  • Two roleplays associated with the final day of SEL 96 - It Doesn't Really Matter and Stop in the Name of Spite - follow this table; sorry I had to hash this one up in a couple of hours to meet the deadline :P.
  • If style mods are a concern for the IFCF crew: Independence 1975 0; Athletic Saint Eleanor 1; Grand Beach -1; Army and Navy -2.5. (Note that Army and Navy is a single team, not two teams.)
  • I am entering ASE as Athletic Saint Eleanor pursuant to this post; if its name must be reduced to less than twenty characters for whatever reason, I authorise the IFCF to change the name of the club to Athletic St. Eleanor.

Oneshot Special: It Doesn't Really Matter

8:49pm - Tuesday 1st October 1996
When you've played one apparently-important game in a week and you end up having to play another apparently-important game a few days later, a few things might come in necessary. Rest? Yes. Practice? Occasionally. Focus? Definitely. Coffee? Obviously. Katie O'Donnell figured she'd had the last of these, at least. Not that this was one of her more memorable games. Athletic Saint Eleanor... drawing 1-1 with Juventud? A bunch of uni students who probably don't even want to play football?

This was hardly one that Aaron Francis would look back on fondly, either. Ridiculous challenge on Freddy Newton around the six-yard box, if not nigh-on horrendous; no need for the referee to give him a second yellow card already at the end of a terrible day. That he felt no need to complain, argue or incessantly stomp at the decision just piled on the impact further; he just walked off. As that was happening, O'Donnell put the ball on the spot and looked around a bit.

She was suffering from a few doubts - only a few - but Newton nodded and pointed at her before trudging off to the slightly more homely surroundings of "about twenty yards out." A vote of confidence, surely? She must have thought the crowd was on her side, too. Step back.

Step forward. The man in black blows shortly beforehand, giving her a relatively short runup that was seemingly relatively long, for a relatively consequential penalty in relatively inconsequential circumstances. The ball pings off to her right, where she hopes nobody takes serious notice.

And now stand there. Why? Give it a few more seconds and somebody - she was tempted to think it might be Liam Brown - whacks it miles over the bar, out of play and then back in play for a goal kick that meant absolutely nothing to anybody whatsoever.

It didn't really matter. Nothing did. She would still be the league's top scorer, just about. Athletic would still be vaguely popular, and second. Juventud would still be vaguely obscure, and would still have an entirely new teamsheet every few years, and would still finish seventh... probably. (Actually, they wouldn't have. It took a few hours before word broke out that GHC had hammered Nova Aegis 6-1 in the most one-sided match of the season.)

Oneshot Special: Stop in the Name of Spite

7:53pm - Tuesday 1st October 1996
Caitlynn Jones had just about sealed her drinks bottle for the time being when Georgia Wood snatched it from her and then playfully tapped her on the head with it. After all, they were playing for Golden Unicorn, one of the worst - never mind least defensively improved - teams in this new, heavily bankrolled, fairly attack-minded league. She wasn't the first person in that dressing room to receive an accusing glance from Wood; by no means would she be the last.

"Do you - any of you - seriously think that 2-2 at half time against a bunch of overrated underachievers is supposed to be a good result?" Wood asked to nobody in particular. Most of them seemed to surrender into a state of agreement. One of them didn't - and she raised her eyebrows at the manager, not for the last time either.

"This is proper atrocious, and I mean it, and it's all all of your faults! And no, it's not my fault any of you are making silly mistakes, either," she added, while conveniently forgetting that her attempt to parry away Sword and Shield's first shot of the game led to them scoring with their second.

"So why am I bothering listening to you rather than the tracksuited guy over there?" questioned Owen Prentice, who had been substituted off earlier after suffering a mild injury.

"Because I have a plan to stop this ship from becoming... shit. Yes. The gaffer should start taking notes. Anybody who wants to get past the halfway line, move all over the place, try and be reasonable in doing so, take shots when you feel like it's possible to take shots and mostly hope for the best. Anybody who doesn't, start running towards the ball - NOT the other guy - and get it somehow, and try and pass it to the people who do want to go forward if it's possible. All of you, get back out there, stop thinking and START DOING SOMETHING TO MAKE US LOOK COMPETITIVE NEXT SEASON. I'm captain for a reason, and it's not because I've been called up to the national team."

"And why are we bad?" another player - who Wood didn't quite notice - wondered out loud.

"The defenders don't have any idea where the other team's strikers and wingers are, and they're paying the price. The attack-minded players, most of them are quite literally running straight into the path of the opposition players without a care in the world, except for a couple of moments of magic I can probably chalk down to them losing focus. And the staff have given us no gameplan whatsoever, when they could just find a way to adopt my plan in the coming minutes."

"Stop being sarcastic, Georgia."

"No... this is the truth."

It seemed to work - the Unicorn scored twice in the ten minutes after kickoff. Then nothing much happened. Really? Yes. It didn't stop them from finishing five points adrift at the bottom, anyway. (And in case you were wondering, Jones got her bottle back at the end of the half-time interval.)

Why? George Mitcham, General then and now, cofounded the National Liberation Front in 1971 to demand a free Saint Eleanor. He got his wish in '75 after a 15-month war: becoming President, appointing notable NLF friends and some charity's executive director as VPs and calling them legislators. He has retained power through oil money; zero income tax; free healthcare, schooling, public transport - and markets; tolerating dissent on apolitical matters; allowing private gun ownership (with plenty of training) to protect against future invasions; high-quality PR; and football.
