Season Capsules: 2051/52 Apertura, 2052/53 Clausura

2051: Apertura

Although the D-League hadn't been able to create any kind of impact internationally, league officials were still feeling good about their product heading into the Apertura. The previous four titles had all been decided on the final matchday, ensuring that compelling football was being played throughout the country all season long. Of course, there were still some rumblings of discontent that there was a clear divide forming between the haves and have-nots. The Raymaleys and Mizunos just couldn't compete with the Lakeports and Kildares, while teams like Chuuoushi and Takano managed to show sparks but never quite found their way out of the middle of the pack. But since the salary cap was gone and teams were free to approach whomever they wanted, surely an infusion of cash could eliminate those complaints?

Well, if that was the case, owners all over the league were being rather stingy. A few role players were swapped here and there, but once again, the offseason transfer market was lacking a marquee signing. There were some rather silly rumors going around that all of the league's scouts had simply vanished. There were plenty of analysts who expected Dynamo Kalinsk and Port Royal to be big players during the offseason after both had disappointing seasons, and Chuuoushi's drop from sixth to fifteenth was even more galling. On the other end of the spectum youhad Yuki City Athletic, who rose ten spots to fourth after things started to click with the development of youngsters Shane Bologna and Shannon Brookhouse. At goalkeeper and forward, respectively, the two helped reverse the team's fortunes. They also had a good draft class from their fourteenth-place finish in 2049, so it was apparent that they were out to improve internally before they considered adding to their stock of foreign players.

There was excitement in the air in Kildare as the club opened the doors of its new 61,000 seat stadium, the KPL Arena. There was a real fear that the team was in danger of losing its edge. The team looked very different from the one which won two straight titles, due to a combination of old age and sagging revenue. Although the club's fanbase was passionate and produced a string of sellouts, the Kirk County Stadium was just too small. Having boosted their capacity by nearly 25%, the management hoped that the KPL Arena would help the team recruit and retain talent by giving them more money to spend as well as providing more attractive facilities. They opened the stadium with pomp and circumstance, and most importantly, a victory. A 3-1 result over visiting Sporting Lakeport got them off on the right foot, with forward Angelo Santuli christening the pitch in the 23rd minute with its first league goal.

As expected, Sporting Lakeport were among the league leaders in the early going. No one could ever count them out as long as long as Jeremy McAllister, Jr. was in his element, and in Tim Purcell, the club thought it finally had the right combination of finesse and power up front. The aging midfield was a problem that would surely be dealt with in time; for now, there were no major concerns. They shrugged off the opening-day loss to Kildare and rattled off six straight wins to climb up to second in the table. Ahead of them? Somehow... Teknika Schlieffen. They stared the season 6-2-0. The team actually looked dangerous after their time near the bottom of the league produced some excellent draft classes. Now they had Olga Enterprise and Lincoln McFarland to provide veteran leadership, and that helped the youngsters around them harness their potential. Three members of the Di Bradini Cup 11 were in the first eleven for Schlieffen, and although they still had question marks up front, Kenny Banister was off to a strong start with 5 goals in the unbeaten run.

Everyone expected them to fade. It wasn't the first time that a team had gotten off to a hot start that surprised the traditional powers. Witness Chuuoushi mingling with the top of the pack alongside Schlieffen well into November. Ten wins for Schlieffen and nine for Chuuoushi had them first and second, respectively, while the familiar clubs lingered behind them. A draw with lowly Bradford and a loss against Stoneridge restored some order, with Lakeport reclaiming second place by the halfway point. Yuki City Athletic were behind them, and Eastport United were enjoying some time back in the sun. Eastport looked like they were in a similar situation as Kildare -- plenty of talent, but all of it aging. Lynn DiMino and Aiko Yoshida still had an intrinsic understanding which made their midfield play dangerous, but they had lost some of their speed. In Ken Antonovich, though, they had a striking talent which could keep them in games.

The biggest thing about the halfway point, though, was that Teknika Schlieffen had not lost their pace. In fact, they were growing the gap between themselves and Lakeport. After a home loss to Dynamo in Week 13, Schlieffen rattled off six straight to lead by seven points at the turn. Among them were victories over Grandborough and Kildare, which were both in the midst of subpar starts. Kildare were especially disappointing. Although they'd been invigorated by the opening of their new stadium, the losses started to pile up. Morale was low as the club sat at 6-2-11. Fans were bemoaning the fact that they'd managed to fall beneath even Super Dimension, they of three-consecutive nineteenth-place finishes.

Could they keep it up? There was starting to be talk that maybe they were a threat. And with clubs like Shuukyuu, Grandborough, and Kildare all trying to maintain respectability let alone go for the title, the number of seasoned challengers wasn't too large. But then Schlieffen went cold. Three straight losses, including one to Kishin, would have derailed the campaign if Lakeport hadn't also managed to lose two matches in that same stretch. The gap was narrowed to two, however, in Week 25. Lakeport's 3-1 away win against Coraopolis was balanced against Schlieffen's scoreless draw against King's Eleven. Yuki City Athletic exploded onto the scene with a 4-0 romp over Lakeport in Week 27, and a 2-0 road win against Schlieffen a week later pulled them within a point of the top. Schlieffen's bad swing continued with a 4-2 home loss to Lakeport the following week, which dropped them to third. Athletic and Lakeport stood at the top with identical 17-6-6 records as the league entered March. A 1-1 draw with Super Dimension confirmed fears that the dream was finally over for Schlieffen, who were leapfrogged by Kalinsk with eight games remaining.

But they weren't done yet. Lakeport and Athletic jockeyed for position and Lakeport pulled two points clear in Week 32 as Junior's hat trick powered them past Bradford. But Schlieffen were still in the picture; they rolled 5-1 away to Kalinsk, a result which Dancougar international Hajime Kojima couldn't explain to the press after the game. The next week, Schlieffen took sole position of second with a 3-2 win over Port Royal, and a 3-0 victory against Kildare created a logjam at the top. Lakeport's 1-1 draw with Stoneridge meant that with a month to go, both were sitting on 68 points. Suddenly, the dream was back. Players were starting to appear more on the streets of Schlieffen to encourage fans to support the team, which was in contention for the first time ever. They willed their team to victory in Week 35, a 2-1 road win against Aiken City which boosted them two points clear. The advantage grew to five when Lakeport stumbled at home to Shuukyuu Kishin in Week 36, while Schlieffen dominated a thoroughly average-looking Grandborough 4-0.

Raymaley Atheltic made things interesting, though. Yes, you read right -- woeful Raymaley, owners of the league's worst defense, scraped together a 3-0 win against Schlieffen which saw forward Chad Oliverio nab his first professional hat trick. That, coupled with Yuki City Athletic's 4-2 win against Takano, meant that the lead stood at two points with a game remaining. Once again, the final day would decide it, although it was only a two-team race. Lakeport's 0-0 draw with Port Royal left them four points out. Looking at the table, Schlieffen had the easier match, home to Takano. Athletic were away to Eastport, who were destined for a top-six finish with the league's highest-scoring attack. They beat Athletic 2-1, making Schlieffen's 3-3 draw meaningless. Despite the long odds and the roller-coaster ride, Teknika Schlieffen had broken the monopoly at the top.

International Roundup

Whatever excuses the boards were willing to throw out, one couldn't deny that the outlook wasn't rosy when Eastport United welcomed Jaarguzmuz FC to kick things off in the Globe Cup prelims. It was a close-run thing. Eastport twice squandered 2-1 leads, so the second leg went into penalties. August Swainston stopped two to put them into the next round, but there they ran into East Reading. A 0-0 at home was a bad sign, and in the second leg, Eastport fell flat and lost 3-1. Shuukyuu Kishin, however, looked far better against Pasarga's Tanrisal. Wins of 5-3 and 3-2, powered by Tsutomu Asahina's four goals, got them in the qualifying stage where they would join Sporting Kildare. Lakeport were also found themselves scrapping it out in the Globe Cup after exiting the second preliminary round of the TakilQuip, losing 2-1 on aggregate to Wexax United. They made a good account of themselves in the loss, but wasted opportunities by Jeremy McAllister, Jr. and Maki Selks came back to haunt them after the first leg ended 1-0 to the elves.

Better luck, through, for Stoneridge United in the TakilQuip. Much better, in fact, given the draw put before them. In the second preliminary round they were up against Albrecht Turkish, one of the world's most famous clubs and a former world champion. A thumping was expected, but at least fans would turn out to see it. But then Stoneridge won the first leg at home 3-2 after Hisatsune Matsuura capped a furious comeback with a free kick goal in the 84th minute. Then it was off to Albrecht, where reality was expected to set in. It didn't. A more emphatic win, 4-2 after dominating the match, saw them through to face Dunboor FC. Now surely the roof would come down. Not yet. A 2-2 road draw was followed by a 2-1 win at home, as Swartaz forward Konstantin Brita connected on three of the four goals. They were surprisingly through to the group stages along with automatic qualifiers Grandborough FC.

In the Globe Cup, things were looking good for the D-League, as well. Shuukyuu Kishin fought Casuals Osteria to a 3-3 road draw and then won 3-2 at home with Sarzonian Jody Nicholls coming off the bench to provide the late game-winner. Sporting Kildare hardly blinked against Seaford, cruising 8-1 on aggregate. And a McAllister, Jr. hat trick powered Lakeport past Firewood City 6-2 at home en route to a 7-3 aggregate victory which saw most of the reserves get a workout in the second leg. That meant that five D-League teams were still active in the group stages of international competition. Maybe things were looking up!

Or maybe reality was waiting for the right moment to rear its ugly head. Grandborough and Stoneridge were not only outplayed in the TakilQuip group stages, but they were thoroughly outclassed. Both clubs managed only a single win from their six games, meaning that the Globe Cup safety valve was no longer open to them. Grandborough fared the worst, finishing a full three points behind Mountbatten Junction in Group E with a 1-1-4 mark and a paltry four goals scored. They were shut out twice at home and looked nothing like the defending league champions, prompting a harsh reaction from the fans. Stoneridge did better in finishing 1-3-2, which somehow put them only a point out of second place. Raynor City and Atletico Jutense were themselves surprised to be playing second fiddle to the Bradley Hornets, who helped West Zirconia to a strong showing.

In the Globe Cup, things went a little better. Shuukyuu Kishin and Medoria Lowen cruised through Gruop D, each hitting double digit points to finish well clear of the competition. Kishin's 5-3 home win over Medoria was a strong candidate for match of the tournament, with both teams attacking with reckless abandon and producing an array of scoring chances that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Sporting Kildare were also through in Group K, having pipped Sargossa's El Nacional by a single point in the final standings. A goalless draw in the KPL Arena against An Blascaod Mor was the difference, although there were plenty of fans who maintained that they should have won the game after Kildare had a late goal disallowed for offside. The bad news was in Group L, were Lakeport were ousted after finishing two points behind Mort Park. They put up a decent fight, but a pair of losses to the West Zirconians put the knockouts out of reach.

Kishin and Kildare were all that was left, and both were awaiting Cafundeulese competition. America, former home of respected doctor and Dancougar legend Hideo Ikeda, went up against Kildare and lost 3-1 on aggregate, as Kildare gambled on a near full-strength lineup that featured developing stars Angelo Santuli and Louis Rheingold despite the battle they were going through for the Apertura. Kishin had a tougher time agianst Atletico Jutense, and ended up losing on away goals after both legs ended in a draw. Onward to the Round of 16, then, for Kildare. Their opponents were Albrecht FC, who won the first leg 2-0 and never looked back. The KPL Arena was silenced in the return leg, as a scoreless draw saw Kildare exit the tournament and end the D-League's international adventure.

2052: Clausura

A note on the Dancougar league calendar: the Clausura takes place concurrently with World Cup 49 qualifying, so this writeup will be somewhat ahead of the qualifying thread. In our timeline, the World Cup/Cup of Harmony take place in the summer after the conclusion of the Clausura.

Dynamo Kalinsk finished an impressive third in the Apertura, bouncing back strongly after a dismal 2050/51 campaign. There was talk of them challenging for the title, but it appeared like they would have an uphill battle for it after losing star midfielder Darren Letson to the offseason market. Cafundeu side Petardos S/A snapped him up by virtue of his performances for club and country, and suddenly they had some serious holes to fill. The midfield needed shoring up after a round of retirements, but they had a budding star in 24-year-old defender Leslie Serianni. If nothing else, goalkeeper Hajime Kojima was looking to make a statement to stay in the good graces of national team manager Lyle Dylandy during World Cup 49 qualifying.

Letson's transfer was the only major move of the summer, as once again most teams preferred to keep their core lineups stable and only haggle with interchangeable parts. The natural question to ask was whether or not Teknika Schlieffen had a chance to repeat as champions. Their title had sent shockwaves throughout the league and some were writing it off as a fluke. Surely it wouldn't happen again. But a look at rosters seemed to indicate things were in their favor. Being a World Cup year, most of the foreign players in the league were intermittently bound for international duty, leaving clubs with weakened lineups while they recovered from the matches. Teknika had just one foreigner, Arrozan veteran Olga Enterprise. And while it did have three Dancougarans named to Dylandy's pool, only one of them was expected to play a large role - midfielder Lincoln McFarland. So most of the young talent which had carried them through the season would be left largely untouched by the international events of the fall and spring, conferring them some advantage.

Two months into the season, they were hanging tough in third, but it seemed like a lot of their element of surprise had vanished. Port Royal led the league comfortably, and a 3-2 head-to-head result against the holders in Week 5 seemed to confirm that they were in the pole position. Port Royal had dropped out of the picture in the preceding seasons, but midfielder Colt Seneker was enjoying a strong start with three goals in the first eight games. The team was expected to suffer when Arie Honjo was away on international duty, but Seneker was playing like he had some beef with Dylandy for leaving him out of the picture. Although he was oft tagged as a future star in college, Seneker never really took off in the pros, and his steady contributions were not enough to build Port Royal into a contender. Now at age 30, his shot at international stardom had likely evaporated, but he was still on a mission to redeem his club's faith in him. Troy McDonalds and Sylvia Hester were also finding form up front, which made up for the occasional absense of Orochi Sugawara.

As November came to a close, Port Royal had a six point lead over Schlieffen, which always seemed to have time for a bad loss. A 1-0 defeat at home to Port Vigilence was a bit misleading, as Vigilence got off to an uncharacteristically fast start themselves and were sitting sixth at the time. Kildare were in full recovery mode and sat third in the table, a marked improvement from eleventh the year before. Defender Zach Ledain, now 35, continued to hold his own in the middle of the park despite seeing a significant drop in his speed over the offseason. He made up for it with his wits and awareness, so he rarely found himself in a bad position. As a testament to how things could quickly shake up in the D-League, Takano and Port Vigilence found themselves in the top half while Sporting Lakeport found itself in a dismal 17th. Too many of their players were struggling to balance time between club and country, especially Audrey Brodell and Junior, two of the squad's lynchpins. Stoneridge, Yuki City Athletic, Grandborough, and Shuukyuu Kishin also found themselves in the bottom half. Suddenly, the vote of confidence given to Kishin manager Jericho Leyton seemed premature, and the former Dancougar captain wondered if he should have jumped ship for the national team job after all.

All three would make gains by the halfway point, especially Grandborough, which closed out the first half with a six-game winning streak. Port Royal remained on top, but the lead had shrunk to a single point. Right behind them were their cross-delta rivals from Eastport United, who were getting spirited production from Abel Khalid and Ken Antonovich. The team's 43 goals scored were best in the league and powered them to 12-3-4. Schlieffen were a point behind them in third, while Kildare and Grandborough rounded out the top five. Thus began the shuffle. Teknika reclaimed the lead in Week 21 after a 3-0 decision against Kalinsk, while Port Royal stumbled 3-2 at home to Grandborough who ran their winning streak to eight. It finally ended the following week with a 1-1 draw away to Super Dimension, and other results made it a mere three points separating the top five. The top spot went to Eastport after they invited Port Royal across the river to the Muni and thrashed them 6-0. It would hold up as the largest home win of the year for any team.

By the end of February, Teknika had opened up a six-point lead over Kildare, while Eastport faded after their signature win. They went winless in six, drawing the subsequent three and then losing the three after that, including 2-0 at Schlieffen. Shuukyuu Kishin and Sporting Lakeport also pushed their way into the top half, and Kishin's revival was stirring. They rose to fifth in the table once the midfielder started making up for the frequent absense of their best forwards. Allen Jakubiak and Mary Staken were key contributers, and when he wasn't chosen for the national team, Sidney Rutledge always seemed to produce that one moment of brilliance that could turn a game in his side's favor. Realistically, though, they weren't in the race for the title at 11 points out. After a month, they reduced that gap to 10 but managed to fall to eighth after teams started to cluster together. They all knew that two-year point totals were on the line, and with that, spots for international competition.

Teknika remained in the lead, and although the gap was only two points with three matches to go, the message they were sending to the rest of the league was that they were for real. It was time for another power shift in the D-League, and they intended to benefit. Eastport had recovered from its fall and were three points back. Grandborough had the fewest losses in the league with six and sat in second place. Kildare and Kalinsk were both in striking distance, as well. But in Week 36, nearly everything that could have wrong wrong for the challengers did. Grandborough lost 1-0 at Raymaley and Eastport drew Bradford. Teknika's match agianst King's Eleven ended 3-1 to the leaders, which stretched the gap to four points.

The schedule worked very much in Schlieffen's favor. Fifth-place Grandborough hosted third-place Kalinsk in Week 37 and sixth-place Port Royal welcomed second-place Kildare. Schlieffen, meanwhile, were away to 14th-place Takano. If results went the right way, they could win the trophy with a game to spare. Port Royal and Grandborough each did their part by winning - comfortably, it should be said. Results of 3-1 and 4-1 gave Schlieffen the opportunity, and the 2-0 victory gave them 75 points and clinched the league title. Much of the drama surrounding two-year point totals was also alleviated down the stretch. With two straight championships, Schlieffen had a TakilQuip slot wrapped up easily. Eastport and Kalinsk both had a significant edge of their nearest competitors and were also guaranteed TakilQuip slots. The only real question that remained was how the Globe Cup would be divvied up. Grandborough's 2-1 win over Kildare on the final saw saw them grab the first slot, while Lakeport's loss to Stoneridge meant that Shuukyuu Kishin could jump them into the second slot with a victory over King's Eleven in the Queen's Cup. At 6-2, it wasn't much of a contest.

But once again, the story was Teknika. It had been a little over ten years since a bitter mutiny tore through the state of Helmut. While actual fighting only lasted a few days, there were still physical and mental signs of scarring. Questions still hadn't been answered about why it started, who the real perpetrators were, and what had happened to all the men and women swept up in the conflict. Now, after putting all that behind them, the citizens of Helmut - and the capital, Schlieffen - had a reason to be proud. Their club now had two consecutive D-League crowns, and there was no reason to believe they couldn't remain competitive in the years to come.

International Qualifiers

On the final day of the Clausura, Yuki City Athletic, sitting 11th in the table and looking decidedly average, still had a miraculous shot at international qualification. They stood at 126 aggregate points, one behind Shuukyuu Kishin's 127. If they got some help from King's Eleven, they could still squeak into the Globe Cup based almost entirely on the strength of their second-place finish in the Apertura. They beat Takano 2-1 but were disappointed to learn that Kishin had run away with the Queen's Cup, meaning they were out of the picture. Deservedly so, perhaps, but it was a tough crash for a team that had high hopes entering the season.

THE JOWENGUARD CROWN
Pre-Season competition to decide teams for International Competitions

After seasons choosing the teams to be directed to the TQCC, Globe Cup and SBCC through mysterious ways (although most followed a criteria, which changed once or twice), the CCFM finally decided to create a new competition in order to choose the teams to go to the international competitions to be played before the end of the Cafundelense season. In homage to the former president of the CCFM, Erasmo Carlos Jowenguard, the new competition was named the Jowenguard Crown. Played before the official beginning of the new season, is composed by some knockout rounds, involving teams which had good performances in the previous season: be those in the league or in the cup. The competition is divided in two "areas": the TQCC/GC and the SBCC, the winners of each one meeting in the final game to decide the Crown.

The first edition showed that the competition is a pure mess when deciding which teams would participate and which would be its format, and the CCFM directors proved that they are completely useless by repeating the same format and continuing with the mess involving this competition which is entering in its second edition. For the TQCC/GC area, the 8 best teams of the league were qualified (7, as the champion is already in the TQCC), together with the semifinalists of the last Empress Cup, and the last champion of the Second Division. Current First Division league champions (Petardos S/A in this case) wouldn't participate in the Jowenguard Crown and would receive an automatic TQCC spot. Of course, there were cases of a team qualifying in both league and cup criteria. But, in these cases, no substitute would be called.

Seeds for the TQCC/GC area are the following: League 2nd (1st), Cup Winners (none this season), then the qualified through the league (2nd - 7th), those qualified through the cup (none this season) and last the current Second Division champion (8th). Due to only 8 teams qualifying for the Jowenguard Crown this season, no teams received byes.

Former champions:

Edition 1 - Ranca Toco
Edition 2 - Petardos S/A
Edition 3 - Petardos S/A

See the results of the TQCC/GC area:

First Round:

(1st) Cafundó do Juta 3-0 Atlético Insular (8th)
(2nd) Atlético Jutense 4-1 Serrano (7th)
(3rd) Dunboor FC 2-1 Central United (6th)
(4th) América 2-3 Porto Lacruz (5th)

Globe Cup playoff (winners go to GC):

(4th) América 5-2 Atlético Insular (8th)
(6th) Central United 0-0 Serrano (7th)
Penalties: 4-5

Semifinals:

(1st) Cafundó do Juta 1-1 Porto Lacruz (5th)
Penalties: 2-3
(2nd) Atlético Jutense 3-0 Dunboor FC (3rd)

TQCC Playoff (winner goes to TQCC/loser to Globe Cup):

(1st) Cafundó do Juta 1-0 Dunboor FC (3rd)

Area Final (both qualified for TQCC):

(2nd) Atlético Jutense 2-1 Porto Lacruz (5th)

For the SBCC area, there was more organization, and it was easier to get which teams were qualified to play the competition and its format. There were no automatic SBCC spots, and fourteen teams were called, among relegated teams from the First Division in the last season, teams from the Second Division and last season's best Third Division teams. Of course, all of them are now in the Second Division.

The seeds are: last season's 17th placed at Division 1 (1st), 18th/Div1 (2nd), 19th/Div1 (3rd), 20th/Div1 (4th), top 8 not promoted of last season's Division 2 (5th - 12th), last season's Division 3 champions (13th) and last season's Division 3 runner-ups (14th). The first and second seeds enter only in the second round (quarterfinals).

The deadline for entry to TakilQuip Champions’ Cup 19 and Series B Champions’ Cup 16 is tentatively set as 16:00 UTC on Monday, 2009-12-14. As a reminder, the entry limits were previously posted.

Aeropag Tribune Media has decided to launch the Aeropag Football Invitational, a club tournament to be held during the mid-season break of the Paripana Élite League (OOCly, results will be posted alongside each Élite League season). The tournament, effectively an expanded, and consequently more open, version of the old Tournoi IRC, will involve an equal number of teams from world-class football leagues (including the host Aeropag Penguins, and representatives from l’ASS [Septentrionia], the VFA [Elves Security Forces], and the VFR [Vephrall]) and champions of up-and-coming leagues. Though the organizers will have final control over the participants, any association may apply to send teams (either one or two; the second team will only be admitted if needed for an even number of teams) in the same manner as UICA competitions. Associations in the top sixteen of the UICA league coefficients will be considered “seeded” and may submit teams using any criteria they deem appropriate; associations outside the top sixteen will be considered “unseeded” and will generally be expected, though not required, to send their league champion. The winners of TakilQuip Champions’ Cup 19 and Globe Cup 16 will receive invitations, but are under no obligation to participate.

The competition is expected to involve eight, twelve, sixteen, or twenty-four teams, and all matches will be played at the state-of-the-art Olympic Tower Stadium in Aeropag, Paripana. The format will involve groups of four or six teams, with each group containing an equal number of seeded and unseeded teams—if six-team groups are used, only matches between seeded and unseeded teams will be played, to reduce the group stage to three matchdays. Four-team playoffs will be played after the group stage to determine placement (i.e., playoffs for 1st–4th, 5th–8th, et cetera).

Élite League One
Yuba United’s successful quest for Champions’ Cup glory proved a significant distraction from their league campaign, as they had plummeted to sixteenth in the table by the time they hosted Soldarian FC in the RAI Super Cup. A new logo, new kits, and redecoration at Stephen Rogers Memorial Stadium evidently resulted in an adequate recovery, and a favorable head-to-head result against the San Diego Iguanas on the penultimate matchday meant the Silver–Blues would have no need for the title-holder’s spot to ensure their nineteenth successive appearance in the group stage of club football’s premier competition. The other two of the “big three” had no such troubles, and remained dominant from start to finish; Roje’das and the Panthers were separated by a single point at the holiday break, but Savana dropped crucial points in the season’s final third to hand Sonoma Center the title by a comfortable thirteen points.

Sorthern Football League, 2042 season

Shield

A big day in the big city then for the Islanders and didn't they make the most of it with ferryman and probable relation of a Candelarisarian Olympic gold-medalist, Tómas Ó Néill scoring the winner five minutes of that and saving us from having to endure the extra ten minutes or so a penalty-shootout in this godforsaken season opener would have taken. A nation thanks him for that. Aside from the Corcaigh reserve players who would've liked to take some winners medals home, though in reality they probably aren't really all that bothered and who can blame 'em eh? Anyway, onto competitions people might actually have a care for.

An Blascaod Mór 2-1 Corcaigh

Division One

Such as Division One! Very exciting it was as well. The division saw the closest title race ever with 17th of October, Corcaigh, Heathfield United and James Connolly S.C. Spent most of the season constantly exchanging the lead and seperated by just a handful of points. Indeed, the gap between first and fourth going into the final matchday was just three points. Admittedly Corcaigh who were on 64 points couldn't actually have won the league due to second placed Heathfield United who were also three points ahead of Corcaigh being at home to third placed 17th of October who were on 65 points meaning a draw would make United uncatchable whilst a 17th of October win would've put them a point out of Corcaigh's reach. James Connolly, largely based on being named after the nation's favourite person of all time, had the support of much of the nation's non-Heathfield United, Corcaigh or 17th of October supporting football fans, and it was they who went into the final matchday having made a hash of an opportunity to go stay three points clear of Heathfield United the previous week by losing 4-3 away to Beningrad, whilst Heathfield United beat Reading Town and 17th of October drawing Fenians to put themselves level and two points behind James Connolly respectively. With Heathfield United hosting 17th of October for the final match of the season, James Connolly were left with absolutely no room to slip-up. With left grown men being forced to deal with the embarrassment of them crying their eyes being shown around the world (does any TV company outside Sorthern Northland show the SFL actually?) as James Connolly fell two-nil to Sparrowbottom Athletic and four goals in the final ten minutes from twenty-two year old Jack Smith secured a four-one win sending Heathfield United to the title and not just denying it to not just one other club but two. A win for Corcaigh also means that 17th of October miss out of Champions' Cup qualification and will instead strut their stuff in the Globe Cup next season, not exactly a fun day out in the park for them it has to be said. Football can be a cruel cruel game, but prior to the final matches if someone had said such a finale would happen it would probably have been dismissed as something that could only happen in a make-believe world. Still, as least James Connolly didn't win their final game 1-0 which would've left them tied with United on points, goal difference and goals for and leaving someone at the SNFA having to frantically dust down the rules to find out exactly how such a tie would've been broken. Oddly enough, despite being the champions Heathfield United found themselves on the receiving end of the biggest home defeat of the season when Snowspire put seven past them to no reply. Wouldn't get that in Yafor 2 now would ya?

The relegation battle was terrifically exciting to, but frankly we've probably spent long enough sending all three readers to sleep talking about the championship battle. Suffice to say that going into the final match no club had been relegated and a total of five clubs were in danger of going down. Fenians in particular saved their best til last beating Heathfield City six-nil. Had they lost they'd now be preparing for life in Division Two.

Joining 17th of October in the Globe Cup will be Rothsbere Athletic, who themselves were right in the thick of the title race until the final six matches of the season. Perhaps more exciting however (alright, it really isn't) is the announcement from UICA of the Aeropag Football Invitational. Quite what the point of it is unclear, representatives of the Sorthern Northland Football Association's member clubs though voted in favour of participating in the tournament in the hope that participating teams will at least get a goody bag for their troubles. What is known however is that leagues in the top sixteen of the UICA league coefficients may select representatives using whatever criteria they deem appropriate. The Sorthern Football League being ranked twelfth the SNFA decided that the highest placed team in the Division One Fair Play Table who has not already qualified for a UICA tournament or finished in a relegation place (can't reward crapness now can we?) will be nominated as Sorthern Northland's representatives. Points are awarded for each foul, yellow card and red card a team receives with the team with the lowest total of points being the team who 'win' it. Exactly how many points are awarded per offence is quite probably actually unknown except to a tiny handful of people, but in future seasons we can probably expect managers of mid-table sides instructing their players to punch the ref or something in an attempt to avoid any possibility of having to partake in the Aeropag Football Invitational. No one can accuse us of not taking this thing seriously. Anyway, Snowspire were apparently the cleanest non-UICA qualifier/non-relegated team and so will do everyone else a favour by being Sorthern Northland's first AFI representative.

Division Two

A two horse race here. Which is incredibly boring these days, other leagues have four horse races you know? Mind you, Tetherton did start the season off looking like they were going to (pardon my Septentrionian) piss all over the division as they won ten of their eleven opening matches. And drew the other one. A matchday twelve defeat though saw them lose their unbeaten record and one dodgy patch later and Areck Furness' eleven point deficit had turned into a one point deficit. By matchday twenty-three Areck were themselves three points ahead of Tetherton and aside from a single week that order stayed the same until the end of the season by which time Areck had extended their lead to five points. The final promotion place went to Red Star Cork who secured third place with a 1-0 win away to An Blascaod Mór on the final day of the season following a late surge from New Ireland. Interestingly in the relegation battle there were four teams in danger of losing of losing Division Two status on the final day, and each of those team's last match of the season was against one of those teams. The two matches saw 17th placed Brickinwell take on 18th placed Revolutionaire and 20th placed Eastlands host 19th Ibibis Isle. Sadly though there was little drama with both matches finishing one all, with all four goals being scored in the first-half. Brickinwell of course won't mind a jot, the other three teams will be ruing the two points dropped.

Division Three

St. Patrick's are surely the SFL's best example of a yo-yo team so it's no surprise to see them winning promotion. And it won't be any surprise if they're relegated back to this division in the next couple of seasons. A large part of their success this season was down to Ryan Gordon and Noah Garrett, two defenders on loan from Port of Clotaire as part of the close relationship between the two sides. Whilst their additions meant the defence was relatively good whilst nothing special (conceding over a goal a game is a lot when you're winning championships after-all) both players displayed a surprising amount of attacking threat right-back Gordon scoring five goals, and topping the divisions assists charts fifteen assists, and centre-back Garrett scoring eleven goals largely by his presence at set-pieces over the thirty-eight games. Pats will undoubtedly be trying to get both back for next season. Joining Pats in Division Two will be Hillaton Downs, who spent most of the season top of the league and Sundol Town who won promotion with no-one really noticing. And going out the division the other end will be Titletston Rovers, Temol Colliery and Ballynafen, all of whom's juicy burgers will be missed by Third Division fans. Possibly.

Division Four

Fairly routine title for Castford, though having twelve points clear they did do a fairly impressive job of trying to throw it away. Southweald though seemed unwilling to take advantage and dropped points whenever they got close to Castford. At the other end of the table Leahton started the season laughably poorly, being on a mere eleven points at the halfway stage of the season. The second half of the season then saw them pick up ten wins and three draws, which isn't all that bad as far as improvements go.

For the second season in a row Dreyher's two finished the season separated by just three points. The previous three titles had gone to Oast Orient but this season it was Huntscove Harriers who came out on top. On matchday 17 though it looked like it could be going Oast's way once again. Going into the game three points behind, Oast won 7-4, the type of result that would often destroy the losing teams confidence. Huntscove recovered however, and won the following match 2-1 to reinstall their three point advantage and ensure the title would be shared at the very least. A 2-2 draw in the final game saw the Harriers win their first title in four years.

Sorthern Cup

A bizarre move in the Cup saw the SNFA decide to add an extra round to the competition and then give each of the 256 entrants a bye in it, effectively meaning the tournament starts in the second round now. Once again just how few Division One teams make it to the final rounds was noticeable with the eight quarter-finalists being made up of three Division Three teams, two Division four teams and three Division One teams. Critics argue that the Cup is being seen as a distraction by the big teams whilst others claim the situation is simply arising from the tournament being unseeded, allowing Division One teams, to play, and thus knock each other out in the early rounds. Even so Lispole Strand's two-nil in the final over 17th of October came as something of a suprise. The victory is Lispole Strand's third success in the Cup and means they've no won it more times than anyone else. And that they'll be representing Sorthern Northland in the Globe Cup. Again.

Sorthern Union of Students Football League

The University of the Bleeding Obvious caused controversy when they offered scholarships to a number of footballers recently released by professional football clubs under the pretence of conducting an experiment into whether footballers who have trained professionally are better than students who signed up to their university football team as an excuse for a drink or ten. The result is quite clear looking at the table, and in keeping with the University of the Bleeding Obvious' name, is rather bleeding obvious. Second of course was Saint Patrick's, the only other university to take the league with anything approaching seriousness. Beningrad Met take the final IUCC spot after beating Matzuarana Unibertsitatea 1-0 away in their final game allowing them to go above Universität Heltzburg who lost 3-1 to Saint Patrick's.

Kingdom of Dancougar Emergency College Football

Given that another season report was not going to be ready before the next IUCC deadline, there was a frantic scramble to decide which teams would represent Dancougar at the tournament. After all, we had a reputation to uphold, dangit! Several methods were floated, such as sending the same three teams or having the College Alliance select from a shortlist based on performance during the last completed season. Then somebody came up with an even better idea -- why not let schools actually play for it?

Hastily assembled, the Time Warp Tournament was held over ten days on neutral fields in Port Royal and Eastport. All eight participants were drawn from the quarterfinals of the 2052/53 national tournament (results, among other things) and placed into two groups of four. Single round-robin play whittled that down to four teams, from which three IUCC qualifiers would emerge.

Preliminary Group A

Pos Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Ledesma College 3 2 1 0 8 4 4 7 Q
2 Trafford Technical Inst 3 1 2 0 5 4 1 5 P
3 Thane College 3 1 0 2 1 4 -3 3
4 Earlsburg College 3 0 1 2 4 6 -2 1

Earlsburg College 0-1 Thane College
Ledesma College 2-2 Trafford Technical Institute
Trafford Technical Institute 2-2 Earlsburg College
Thane College 0-3 Ledesma College
Earlsburg College 2-3 Ledesma College
Trafford Technical Institute 1-0 Thane College

Earlsburg's magical tournament run was not duplicated, and Thane would not be heading back to the IUCC after failing to escape the group stage. A 1-0 defeat to Trafford Tech on the final day made sure of that. Ledesma were the surprise winners, qualifying directly and earning themselves a spot in the classification final.

Preliminary Group B

Pos Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Aiken College 3 2 1 0 7 5 2 7 Q
2 Granger Island College 3 1 2 0 6 4 2 5 P
3 Pollock College 3 1 1 1 7 7 0 4
4 University of Gilderome 3 0 0 3 3 7 -4 0

Aiken College 3-2 Pollock College
Granger Island College 2-0 University of Gilderome
University of Gilderome 1-2 Aiken College
Pollock College 2-2 Granger Island College
Aiken College 2-2 Granger Island College
University of Gilderome 2-3 Pollock College

Gilderome going winless was a bit of a surprise, but other than that, the two teams expected to advance did so. Aiken and Granger Island played each other to a draw on the final day, consigning the latter to a playoff. Aiken would represent the vaunted Lunarossa Collegiate Premier League on the international stage, where analysts predicted they would collapse spectacularly.

Classification Third Place
Trafford Technical Institute 2p-2 Granger Island College

In an interesting twist, the third place game was the more interesting of the two, because the group champions had already booked their place in the IUCC and only seeding was up for grabs. This, however, was for all the marbles. It went to penalties and Tech emerged victorious after three sudden death rounds.

Classification Final
Aiken College 0-1 Ledesma College

Meanwhile, in the championship game, Ledesma finished off their unlikely run by claiming the first seed.

So, to recap:

The 17th edition of the West Zirconian National League. The story so far:

Code: Select all
Season  Champions             Runners-up             Third Place

1       Banks                Bradley Hornets        St. Martin University*
2       Banks                Markham                St. Martin University*
3       Houghton Kestrels    Civil Service          Banks
4       Bradley Swifts       Banks                  New Toronto
5       Banks                St. Martin University* Markham
6       Stanley United       Moorcroft Wanderers    Houghton Kestrels
7       Banks                Bradley Hornets        St. Martin University*
 8       Banks                Bradley Hornets        Markham
9       Banks                Bradley Hornets        Mort Park
 10      Banks                Markham                Stanley United
11      Banks                St. Martin University* Stanley United
12      Banks                Stanley United         Civil Service
13      Banks                Mort Park              Bradley Hornets
14      Banks                Bradley Hornets        Houghton Kestrels
15      Bradley Hornets      Mort Park              Markham
16      Bradley Hornets      Stanley United         Mort Park
* now playing as Etruria

Can you see a pattern emerging here? Let's see if it continues...

Interestingly enough, the Hornets' attempt at a hat-trick started with a home defeat. Granted, it was against Banks, but it was something different to report. In fact, it was Houghton Kestrels who went the longest without defeat, losing 3-2 in the Houghton derby after six straight wins. (Incidentally, it was also Hawks' first win.)

However, they had fallen to sixth by half-way. Banks were in familiar territory at the top of the table, with Taylor's Cross just a point behind. Stanley United and Mort Park were there or thereabouts as well. At the other end, there was only one wooden spoon candidate - Civil Service, ten points adrift of anyone else. Banks began to break away, fuelling hopes of a return to their former glory. Stanley United and Mort Park had other ideas, and even Taylor's Cross were hanging on.

By the final match, Banks were a point ahead of Mort Park. Banks were at home to Markham, while Mort Park travelled to Sephton County, themselves hoping to avoid the playoff lottery.

The vital results were:

Banks 3-1 Markham
Sephton County 3-2 Mort Park

giving Banks another title to add to their collection. The second TQCC place was at least some consolation for the Roadrunners.

** now playing as Mount Vernon

Could the excitement of the First Division be matched by the Second? We shall see.

Interestingly, while it took eleven games for West Coast Angels to be defeated, they were ten points adrift of the lead by that stage - probably because six of those ten matches were draws. In fact it was New Toronto who looked like making an immediate return to the top flight, as they finished the first half ten points ahead of second-placed Moorcroft City (remember them, First Division?).

There was simply no catching New Toronto. The other clubs - namely Moorcroft City, West Coast Angels, Bradley Swifts, Currie and Tîm Cymru - were merely fighting for the other promotion place.

New Toronto clinched the league with five games to spare, and Moorcroft City held on for a belated, but welcome return to the First Division.

  18  Wolverton Town            34   7  10  17   54   71  -17   31

So Civil Service and Hyland Town are relegated, to be replaced by New Toronto and Moorcroft City. The playoff will be contested by AFC Stanton, Tîm Cymru, Bradley Swifts and West Coast Angels.

Meanwhile, the 17th West Zirconian Cup:

 9       St. Andrew's        Currie                  5-0
 10      Banks               Stanley United          4-3aet
 11      Bradley Hornets     Taylor's Cross          2-0
 12      Etruria             Banks                   1-1aet (3-0pen)
 13      Redwood Forest      Banks                   4-3
14      Stanley United      St. Martin Athletic     1-1aet (3-0pen)
 15      Banks               Mort Park               3-2aet
 16      Hyland Town         Taylor's Cross          2-1

In the First Round, Culshaw Town won 4-1 at Kirkham Town, while Redwood University hammered Underwood Town 5-0. Hopefully more upsets would occur in future rounds.

First Round
Anderton United 1-1 Redwood Forest
Replay: Redwood Forest 1-0 Anderton United
New Scilly 4-0 Hilton Athletic
Currie 1-1 Moorcroft City
Replay: Moorcroft City 0-2 Currie
Combined Armed Forces 5-1 Eastham Panthers
Bradley Swifts 0-0 West Coast Angels
Replay: West Coast Angels 2-1 Bradley Swifts
Kirkham Town 1-4 Culshaw Town
Redwood University 5-0 Underwood Town
Wolverton Town 1-3 Ashton Rovers
Wacker Neustadt 2-3 Flockton Flavell
St. Martin University 2-2 Kingsley Town
Replay: Kingsley Town 4-3 St. Martin University
Saint-Christophe 1-3 Mount Vernon
Tîm Cymru 2-2 Stanley Athletic
Replay: Stanley Athletic 3-6 Tîm Cymru
Anderton Town 3-0 Walton
New Toronto 2-1 Felton Athletic

So on to the banana-skin that is the Second Round. Arguably the biggest upset of the round, and one of the greatest in Cup history, saw Redwood Forest win 3-0 at Banks. Ashton Rovers' 2-0 win over Bradley Hornets came close. In addition, the normally useless Mount Vernon defeated Houghton Kestrels 5-3, New Scilly overcame Moorcroft Wanderers 5-2 and Culshaw Town's amazing form continued with a 3-1 win over Hyland Town.

You think that's it? Add Currie's 3-2 win over Civil Service, Combined Armed Forces' 2-0 win at St. Andrew's, Redwood University's 4-2 win over Tîm Cymru and Anderton Town's 4-1 win at Houghton Hawks. An amazing 3-1 win for Flockton Flavell over Markham brought the upset total to ten, out of a mere sixteen ties. In addition, four of the "big five" were knocked out, leaving Mort Park as the only favourite remaining.

Second Round
Banks 0-3 Redwood Forest
West Coast Angels 0-0 Kingsley Town
Replay: Kingsley Town 2-2 West Coast Angels (2-2 AET) (West Coast Angels wins 2-0 on penalty kicks)
Mort Park 5-4 AFC Stanton
Ashton Rovers 2-0 Bradley Hornets
Mount Vernon 5-3 Houghton Kestrels
Moorcroft Wanderers 1-1 New Scilly
Replay: New Scilly 5-2 Moorcroft Wanderers
Culshaw Town 3-1 Hyland Town
Currie 3-2 Civil Service
Etruria 1-0 Stanley United
Sephton County 1-5 East Snaith
St. Andrew's 0-2 Combined Armed Forces
Redwood University 4-2 Tîm Cymru
New Toronto 1-3 St. Martin Athletic
Flockton Flavell 3-1 Markham
Crompton Town 2-4 Taylor's Cross
Houghton Hawks 1-4 Anderton Town

Hopefully things would begin to correct themselves in the Third Round.
No-one told Flockton Flavell about that. Not content with knocking Markham out in the last round, they accounted for Mort Park with a 6-4 win. New Scilly continued their form with a 5-4 win at Taylor's Cross. Mixed fortunes for Snaith sides, as West Coast Angels beat Etruria 2-1, but East Snaith lost 1-0 at home to Currie. In fact, only one First Division side remained - St. Martin Athletic.

Third Round
Ashton Rovers 4-2 Anderton Town
East Snaith 0-1 Currie
Flockton Flavell 6-4 Mort Park
Redwood Forest 4-3 Combined Armed Forces
Taylor's Cross 4-5 New Scilly
West Coast Angels 2-1 Etruria
Redwood University 4-3 Culshaw Town
St. Martin Athletic 2-2 Mount Vernon
Replay: Mount Vernon 0-3 St. Martin Athletic

This season's Cup was destined to go below the First Division, as St. Martin Athletic lost 3-1 at Flockton Flavell. Redwood University remained the only Non-League side after upsetting Currie 4-3, while either Redwood Forest and Ashton Rovers must now be expected to win.

Quarter-Final
Flockton Flavell 3-1 St. Martin Athletic
Redwood Forest 3-1 New Scilly
Ashton Rovers 1-1 West Coast Angels
Replay: West Coast Angels 1-2 Ashton Rovers
Redwood University 4-3 Currie

The Flockton Flavell dream ended in the Semi-Final with defeat to Redwood Forest. Meanwhile, Redwood University also bowed out, creating an all-Second Division final.

Semi-Final
Flockton Flavell 3-4 Redwood Forest
Redwood Forest 6-1 Flockton Flavell
Aggregate: Flockton Flavell 4-10 Redwood Forest

Ashton Rovers 2-1 Redwood University
Redwood University 3-5 Ashton Rovers
Aggregate: Ashton Rovers 7-4 Redwood University

So on to the final:

Final
Redwood Forest 4-1 Ashton Rovers (at City of Houghton Stadium)

Tîm Cymru 1-1 West Coast Angels
West Coast Angels 3-2 Tîm Cymru
Aggregate: Tîm Cymru 3-4 West Coast Angels

It didn't take long - but the Swifts are back.

O-LEAGUE SEASON IV - PART ONE

Three seasons, three champions, and no-one knows what's going to happen this season. Can Ian Betts get the goals to take the title back to Bromham? Can Casuals win two in a row? Will it be tigrine bouncebackability (yes, they're both words - Ed) for Ousevale? Or can the Reds bring the Marshall Warzycha Shield to the capital for the first time? All those questions...and the answers in thirty simple installments.

Matchday One
Stanton surprise everyone by hitting the ground running. Hard. Yoshiaki Soma hit an opening day hat-trick on his Leston debut three seasons ago; he repeated the feat for the Dockers with a triple against Krytenia Emberton. CF Avides, meanwhile, started their life in the Premier with a credible goalless draw against Ousevale, and Notegia do the same against Casuals.

Matchdays 2-5
Ouch. An eight-one away win for Mercia Bromham at The Mound on Matchday Three pushes the Midlanders into top spot, having only dropped two points in five games (against draw specialists Notegia Rangers). Emberton Reds, Stratford, Ousevale and Casuals provide the chasing field.

Matchdays 6-10
Mercia keep their necks in front whilst all behind fall over each other. Ousevale's charge to second is helped by a six-one thrashing of Krytenia "Defence? What's that?" Emberton, but tempered by their first loss of the season, provided by Stanton.

At the bottom, meanwhile, Dereapolis City have three points from thirty, and zero wins. It's all looking bleak for the Derries.

Matchdays 11-15
No Christmas cheer for the Derries going into the winter break. Although three draws in five games doubles their points tally to six, they're already seven points from safety, and shipping a half-dozen against Osteria wouldn't have helped matters. At least Monthuez had the good grace to win a game before falling apart last season...

...meanwhile, at the top of the table, Emberton beat Mercia (the Midlanders' first defeat of the season) to go top on Matchday Twelve and stay there, whilst Stratford plummet to mid-table after a disastrous set of results. Spare a thought for Ellisham, too, who were on the wrong end of a seven-nil against Stanton.

Matchdays 16-20
Ousevale hit the summit on Matchday Twenty, beating Ellisham whilst the Reds are surprisingly held by Dereapolis City. Not that it helps the purple-clad strugglers; Dereapolis are still looking for their first win and are now ten points from safety.
TOP FIVE: Ousevale Borough (41pts), Emberton Reds (40), Mercia Bromham (38), Stanton Town (37), Casuals Osteria (36)

O-LEAGUE SEASON IV - PART TWO

Matchday 21
Ousevale move a little closer to the title with a five-nil crushing of Stratford Rovers, whilst Emberton Reds can only draw with Caledon. Osteria move third after beating Stanton.

Matchday 22
The fat lady has not yet sung. Ousevale are beaten (ironically by the other team from the capital, Krytenia Emberton), the Reds win, and they're level on 44 points. Mercia take advantage and go third after beating Stanton, putting them just two points behind the leaders. Dereapolis draw with fellow relegation strugglers Secklow to reach double figures for the season.

Matchday 23
DEREAPOLIS WIN! PRAISE BE TO MARGARET! Ivan Josef's goal gives them a one-nil victory over Ellisham...but they're still ten points off thirteenth-placed Caversham, who lost to Emberton Reds. That win puts the Reds two points clear of Ousevale and Mercia Bromham, and four clear of Casuals.

Matchday 24
It's as you were at the top, with the big four all winning one-nil. Dereapolis kept their slim hopes of survival alive, picking up a draw as the three teams above them all lost.

Matchday 25
And four became three. Casuals lost to Emberton Reds to go seven points behind the leaders; looks like there's no going back for them now. Ousevale beat Caledon Simpson, and Mercia beat Caversham, to keep the pressure on the leaders though.

Third in WC51. That's about it. I think we once won the inaugural Table Tennis World Cup as well?

O-LEAGUE SEASON IV - PART THREE

Matchday 26
Dereapolis cling onto their status by the thinnest of thin purple threads after defeat at the hands of Stanton, whilst at the top, wins for Emberton and Ousevale give them a bit of breathing space ahead of Mercia, who could only draw with Casuals.

Matchday 27
And now it's got interesting. Clement Nelson was the unlikely hero for Mercia Bromham; the full-back's first goal in two seasons gave his side a two-one victory over Emberton, and with Ousevale defeating Casuals, just two points separate the top three, with the Tigers on top.

At the other end, the inevitable is confirmed, and Dereapolis are relegated after losing to Avidia United.

Matchday 28
Caledon Simpson's quietly awful season reached its nadir as they were beaten two-one by Dereapolis City, a result that relegated the former champions of Atlantian Oceania. Meanwhile, at the end of the league that people actually care about, Mercia put themselves squarely in the midst of the title fight with victory over Ousevale, and the Reds could only draw with Stratford, meaning that the top three read: Mercia 58pts; Ousevale 57; Emberton Reds 57.

Matchday 29
Ousevale tank against the Reds, and with Mercia throwing away two points against Bradwell, it's beginning to come up scarlet for Emberton. Elsewhere, a win for Casuals against Avides guarantees them Globe Cup football next season.

At the other end, the race enters its last day with three teams still not safe. Secklow are in the dreaded fourteenth spot after losing to Avidia United, but they're only a point behind Avides and early-season pacesetters Stratford, who lost to Krytenia Emberton.

The King's League this season was far closer than last year, with a surprise twist in the final few weeks. At week 36, the standings were as follows:

Pos Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Grasshoppers Turic 36 20 9 7 81 50 31 69
2 Firewood City 36 20 6 10 89 53 36 66
3 Rapid Hearthlands 36 19 5 12 52 42 10 62
4 Burningham City 36 17 10 9 73 52 21 61
5 Greeningham City 36 16 12 8 68 49 19 60

The title was slipping out of the champions' hands gradually, but there was still time to reclaim it. The final two weeks fixtures for the championship hopefuls are seen below:

Firewood City vs Hollybrent
Grasshoppers Turic vs Hamtown Athletic
Grasshoppers Turic vs Rapid Hearthlands
Paper Tree Town vs Firewood City

Both teams were expected to triumph in week 37, at home to lesser ranked sides, but incredibly, both stumbled. The following week, Firewood's early kickoff in Paper Tree Town gave them the result they needed to go above Turic on goal difference. Turic's evening kickoff was a tense affair. When Hearthlands equalised with just ten minutes to go, Turic were on thin ice. A draw would give them the championship, but another goal for Rapid would effectively hand the crown to Firewood for the third successive season.

With just three minutes left on the clock, Jerome Johnson wrote his name in Turic folklore with a wonder goal some twenty-five yards out. the Turic Thunderdome erupted in applause. A minute later, the boy wonder repeated his heroics when he beat three defenders before calmly stroking the ball into the net. Turic's 3-1 win handed them their first King's League championship in fifteen years.

Meanwhile at the other end of the table, Hamtown Athletic were once again clinging on for dear life on the final day. A draw at King's Guard Sporting Club would secure them top flight football for another season, but they were thwarted by a controversial winner late in the first half. As their match drew to a close, the away fans all turned to the big screen at Crown Valley Stadium to see out the final minutes of Spoturess' match with Wellmont United. With Spoturess leading 1-0 at home, going into injury time, Hamtown looked doomed. However, it was one of their own who saved them. Young striker Luke Woods - signed on loan by promoted Wellmont United with an option to buy - popped up at the death to prod home during a scramble in the box.

So, come season end, the Royal League champions from last season are sent straight back down. Elsewhere, the playoff winners, Donovan MacLean's Callisto City, finished top half in a superb debut season in the King's League. The Royal League itself played host to a far more interesting title race, with as many as eight teams still in with a shout come week 35...

Pos Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Kronkow United FC 35 18 6 11 59 49 10 60
2 Muirford Athletic 35 17 7 11 59 46 13 58
3 Charleston Athletic FC 35 14 14 7 31 20 11 56
4 Kyoshiku Island FC 35 16 8 11 50 40 10 56
5 Kart Hago 35 16 7 12 62 47 15 55
6 Sparta Yurendam 35 15 9 11 43 36 7 54
7 Bayer Schlossberg FC 35 16 5 14 45 38 7 53
8 Priesthood of Baal 35 14 9 12 69 62 7 51

Kronkow were favourites with their two point lead, and looked certain to return to the King's League immediately. As did Muirford, whoo were occupying the second automatic promotion spot. Yurendam and Baal were still trying to regain elite status after their relegations two seasons ago, but neither looked like likely champions. There was always the playoff route, though.

In week 36, Schlossberg's defeat to Real Rajahara put them out of the title frame, while last season's unfortunate playoff finalists Cymrwell left it too late to turn on the style as they drubbed Real Jraxville. Elsewhere, Muirford claimed the top spot with a narrow 3-2 win in Kart Hago, while Kronkow succumbed 0-2 in Komus. With just two games left, there was only a point in the title race, and three of the eight contenders from last week were now too far behind to steal it.

Pos Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Muirford Athletic 36 18 7 11 62 48 14 61
2 Kronkow United FC 36 18 6 12 59 51 8 60
3 Charleston Athletic FC 36 14 15 7 31 20 11 57
4 Kyoshiku Island FC 36 16 8 12 50 41 9 56
5 Kart Hago 36 16 7 13 64 50 14 55

Despite their defeat, Kart Hago still had a chance. Most likely, it looked as though Muirford and Kronkow had their promotions in the bag, although Charleston could still cause an upset. In week 37, they blew that chance, falling 0-2 in Violia. Meanwhile, the top two guaranteed promotion, as Muirford beat Schlossberg, and Kronkow fought to a draw with Cymrwell.

With one week remaining, Muirford needed only draw their final match in Chestmana to secure the Royal League championship. Meanwhile, Yurendam played in Cymrwell to decide who got the final playoff spot. Should Cymrwell win, and Baal fail to do so, then they would have another shot at promotion.

9 Bayer Schlossberg FC 37 16 5 16 45 42 3 53
10 FC Masaka 37 14 10 13 48 42 6 52

As it turned out, Baal were crushed 1-4 at home by a resurgent Real Jraxville - no doubt feeling they had something to prove - and Cymrwell were unable to break down Yurendam's solid defence, managing only a goalless draw. The final table looked thus:

Pos Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts

20 Chestmana United FC 38 9 12 17 50 66 -16 39 R

The Mount Crown League also finished in a close race, although the eventual champions boasted an outstanding defensive record and had proven hard to beat all season. Going into the penultimate week, four sides still had a chance.

Pos Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Clefton Town FC 44 24 15 5 64 31 33 87
2 Maharia United FC 44 26 7 11 92 64 28 85
3 Fort Mare FC 44 23 15 6 53 30 23 84
4 Dynamo Druz FC 44 23 14 7 58 33 25 83

In week 45, Dynamo Druz were unfortunate enough to be facing Bowsston, while all the other three had mid-lower table opposition. Predictably, they all won, while Druz could only manage a draw. This left Clefton Town needing only a point in Trelagstad to effectively secure the championship...unless Maharia managed to put six past Troycaster, or Fort Mare bagged ten against Monobury.

Incredibly, Trelagstad managed to keep out the champions elect in the early kickoff, handing both their rivals a lifeline. Maharia and Fort Mare both went into their final games knowing that a big win could win them the championship. Fort Mare's afternoon game was disappointing, with poor finishing and solid defending from Monobury culminating in a goalless draw. This left the fate of the title resting on the outcome of the Troycaster vs Maharia game that evening. Maharia signalled their intent with an opener in the first minute, before blitzing the Torycaster penalty area. However, the crowd got behind the home side, who began to carve open the Maharia defense on the counter, bagging three goals before the game was done. Maharia's 3-1 defeat in Troycaster thus handed the Mount Crown League title to Clefton Town.

At the other end of the table, FC United of Dynapolis' fairytale suffered a setback as they were relegated back to the Minor Leagues. Their inconsistency was ultimately their downfall, as they chalked up the biggest away win of the season at Parkchester just three weeks in, but were then beaten 5-6 at home by the same team six months later. Meanwhile, their counterparts, the former Dynapolis United, have reformed with new financing, and have entered the Balida Football League.

In the cups this season, there were surprises galore. The Corradini Cup holders Grasshoppers Turic, crashed out in the Fourth Round to Renneville United, while Junipa Athletic - who would later be relegated from the King's League - rampaged through the tournament, eliminating Burningham City and Trothwands Evolution in the process of getting to the final, where they faced Firewood City.

Firewood had dispatched bitter rivals Greeningham City in the third round, but faced little real quality opposition since. Willem Hamel had decided to use the competition to blood his younger squad members, and they all displayed the trademark Firewood attacking threat.

Road to the final:

Third Round
Firewood City 1-0 Greeningham City
Junipa Athletic 2-1 Paper Tree Town

Fourth Round
Junipa Athletic 2-2 Burningham City
Burningham City 1-3 Junipa Athletic
Aggregate: Junipa Athletic 5-3 Burningham City

Firewood City 5-4 Chestmana United
Chestmana United 2-6 Firewood City
Aggregate: Firewood City 11-6 Chestmana United

Quarter Finals
Trothwands Evolution 2-6 Junipa Athletic
Junipa Athletic 1-2 Trothwands Evolution
Aggregate: Trothwands Evolution 4-7 Junipa Athletic

Firewood City 2-2 Muirford Athletic
Muirford Athletic 1-3 Firewood City
Aggregate: Firewood City 5-3 Muirford Athletic

Renneville 4-3 Priesthood of Baal
Priesthood of Baal 3-4 Renneville
Aggregate: Renneville 8-6 Priesthood of Baal

Hamtown Athletic 0-2 Blacktube Village
Blacktube Village 1-1 Hamtown Athletic
Aggregate: Hamtown Athletic 1-3 Blacktube Village

Semi Finals
Firewood City 3-1 Renneville
Blacktube Village 1-3 Junipa Athletic

The final match was unexpectedly a mismatch. The young Firewood side that had seen off Greeningham in the third round, and scored an incredible twenty goals in total en route to the final, were completely neutralised by an efficient, hard-working Junipa defence. Despite flashes of brilliance from the teenage squad, they were simply too naive, and Junipa claimed their first piece of major silverware in the club's history.

Final
Firewood City 0-2 Junipa Athletic

The OFA Cup surprise packages this year were Cymrwell and Chestmana, however both were eliminated in the Quarter Finals, by Greeningham and Trothwands respectively. The Quarter Finals onwards unfolded as follows:

Quarter Finals
Hollybrent 0-3 Grasshoppers Turic
Grasshoppers Turic 2-1 Hollybrent
Aggregate: Hollybrent 1-5 Grasshoppers Turic

Burningham City 1-0 Rapid Hearthlands
Rapid Hearthlands 2-1 Burningham City (2-1 AET)
Aggregate: Burningham City 2-2 Rapid Hearthlands
(Burningham City wins 3-0 on penalty kicks)

Cymrwell 1-1 Greeningham City
Greeningham City 2-0 Cymrwell
Aggregate: Cymrwell 1-3 Greeningham City

Trothwands Evolution 2-1 Chestmana United
Chestmana United 0-0 Trothwands Evolution
Aggregate: Trothwands Evolution 2-1 Chestmana United

Semi Finals
Grasshoppers Turic 2-4 Trothwands Evolution
Greeningham City 1-2 Burningham City

Once again, Burningham City found themselves in the OFA Cup final - their fifteenth since 2150 - testament to Sir George Pennant's ability as a manager. Last year they were beaten by double champions Firewood City, this year they took to the pitch in Mount Crown Stadium hoping not to repeat their misfortune.

Final
Trothwands Evolution 1-2 Burningham City

Global qualifiers:

O-LEAGUE SEASON IV - PART FOUR

Matchday Thirty

1554: To paraphrase Gio Di Vaio, this is the final day of the O-League season...LIVE! It's a real hum-dinger this year, with two titanic three-way tussles. The Marshall Warzycha Shield has had its blue and yellow adornments removed - it will not be Osteria's this year - and instead it sits patiently under guard in the bowels of the Isserson Stadium, where league leaders Emberton Reds take on their cross-city rivals, Krytenia Emberton. Clearly, the fixture computer is a sick, sick puppy. Second placed Mercia Bromham travel to the home of CF Avides, and third placed Ousevale will need a minor miracle, but will still be going for it against Bradwell Saints at Abbey Road. At the other end, the games to watch out for are Secklow against Caledon Simpson, the Avides-Mercia game, and Stratford v Stanton - a game that Stanton will want to win to assure Globe Cup football next season.

Tea may not suffice. Have the vodka on standby.

1600: Aaand away we go. The nothing games, by the way, are Ellisham v Avidia United, Dereapolis City v Casuals Osteria, and Notegia Rangers v Caversham, and we'll keep you abreast of those too.

1607: Goal at Ostlers Lane! Stanton take the lead through Sjakie Yost, and that's a blow for Stratford's hopes of survival.

1612: Two-nil Stanton. Yoshiaki Soma looks to have settled the Globe Cup question at least...

1618: Hugh Lewis scores for Notegia...ho hum.

1619: GOAL OUSEVALE! Shawn Hill gives Tigers the lead in Bradwell. As things stand, they're now second.

1622: One of those "nothing games" - Jeremy Campbell makes it one-nil Ellisham.

1635: IT'S RAINING GOALS...and the biggie is at the Rey Felicio. Nélio has put Mercia in front against Avides, and that means the Midlanders are top as things stand! Ellisham are two up against Avidia - Campbell with a brace now - and Stephen Presley has put Casuals ahead against the hapless Derries.

1638: Dennis Sciandri pulls one back for Rovers. Two-one at Ostlers lane, and the home side hoping that Secklow don't score in their match.

1642: GOAL FOR EMBERTON! NO, THE OTHER ONE! Kenny Bianco grabs spanner, and inserts firmly into Reds' title hopes, as he scores for the Pats.

1647: Half time. As things stand, Mercia are champions, Ousevale second, Emberton third, and Secklow in the abyss. Mine's a double.

1702: Three-quarters of an hour remain in the season, starting....now!

1715: It may be a meaningless game, but goals is goals for Marco Tristan. Two-nil Osteria.

1719: Wow, this is a slow second half. Notegia two, Caversham nil if you're counting. Neil Rooke with the goal.

1726: Simon Vuruyu restored Stanton's two-goal cushion against Stratford; that'll be 3-1 then.

1729: Enter the Showman. Keifer Lloyd makes it three for Ellisham.

1734: THAT WASN'T IN THE SCRIPT!!! Calvin Howard makes it one-one against Mercia...and if it stays like this, Ousevale will win the title!

1736: Gonçalo Crespo scores for Caversham; they now trail two-one.

1738: BEEEEEEEEEEETTS! Ian Betts, two-one, and it's Mercia back on top.

1742: Intriguing stuff at Knott Crescent; two in seven minutes for Crespo, and Caversham are level.

1747: No added time at The Mound, and Secklow's nil-nil sends them down. Sighs of relief for Avides and Stratford, who are both losing.

1749: All over at the Isserson...and the Reds have thrown it all away! AND THERE'S THE FINAL WHISTLE AT THE REY FELICIO!!! Mercia Bromham are champions for the second time!!!

O-LEAGUE SEASON IV - ROUNDUP

KFA Cup
The KFA Cup threw up its first non-top flight winner this season. The season was full of shocks, not least Caversham's defeat to O-League Four side Wroxham Trinity in Round One, and Wick Town of the same division's unlikely run to the semis. Bromham City, Norton, and Secklow were amongst the Woodsmen's victims before they lost out to Avidia United.

The final, between United and Beckton Supermarine was to be striker Mo Clinton's swansong - and oh boy, did he sing. his 107th minute strike lifted the cup for the Mariners and put them into the Globe Cup.

AVIDIA UNITED 0-1 BECKTON SUPERMARINE (aet, FT 0-0)

Division Changes
OLP > OL2: Secklow, Caledon Simpson, Dereapolis City
OL2 > OLP: New Cefn Albion, Beckton Supermarine, Norton

OL2 > OL3: CFF Monthuez, Aigburth Athletic, Oldbrook
OL3 > OL2: Thackworth Rovers, Camberley Town, Linford United

OL3 > OL4: Westleigh Rovers, Shruton Town, Bletcham Devils
OL4 > OL3: Wick Town, Huntsford, Yardley Forest

UICA Qualification
Champions' Cup: Mercia Bromham - Ousevale Borough - Emberton Reds
Aeropag Invitational: Mercia Bromham
Globe Cup: Casuals Osteria - Stanton Town - Beckton Supermarine
Series B Cup: New Cefn Albion - Norton - Ousevale Juniors - Aylesford*
*Aylesford finished fifth in O-League Two, but have been given an SBCC place due to Beckton's participation in the Globe Cup.

Football. A game that now consists of salaries and paparazzi.

In a country where money and fame mean little.

Where ability, skill and the love of the sport is all that matters.

Where no fat cat millionaire would dare to attempt to set up a fully functioning league.

The truest fans. The truest players.

They took to the streets.

These athletes have brought true heart and soul back to a dying game through a competition they call...

Image

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we are bringing football to the streets. Sixteen cities have put forwards sixteen teams of five players for the world's largest urban five-a-side football competition.

When we say "five-a-side":

We mean five out on the field, one in the goal.
So that's six players overall.
Every team looks to be set to play with a 2-2-1 formation.

When we say "urban":

We mean pitches made anywhere and everywhere.
A playground, a parking lot, an office block.
These games will be played everywhere.

The only things for sure about each game is:

There will be six players on each team.
There will be two goals.
The team that scores the most goals will get 2 points.
The team that loses gets nil.
If you draw, you get 1.
Games will be played in two 30 minute halves.

The only things for sure about the league:

4 divisions.
16 teams.
96 players.

One title.

The Urban5 Championship.
