World Softball Classic Everything Thread

Postby Sarzonia » Wed Mar 23, 2011 7:26 pm

Twenty nations will begin an epic journey to see which team will hoist the championship trophy in the first World Softball Classic.

The teams will be divided into five groups of four teams each, meaning a total of six group stage matches over a one-week period. The halfway period between matches will be reserved for friendly matches between teams that do NOT face each other in the group stage. Teams wishing to play friendlies should make arrangements in the discussion thread or via TG or IRC or AIM or whatever you use. Then both nations must post in the discussion thread. Once both nations confirm via the discussion thread, I'll post the friendlies.

Following the group stage, the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout rounds. Tiebreakers for spots in the knockout rounds will be as follows: 1) Head-to-head results (if applicable); 2) run differential in head-to-head results (if applicable); 3) total run differential; 4) total runs scored; 5) lowest earned run average; 6) one-off playoff match.

The first knockout stage will pit the seventh seed against the 10th seed at the home venue of the seventh seed and the eighth seed against the ninth seed at the home field of the eighth seed. The remaining playoff matches will be held in Sarzonia for RP purposes. All knockout rounds will be one-off matches except for the championship series, which will be best-of-three.

If you have any purely OOC concerns or questions, please use the sign up thread until I create a World Softball Classic discussion thread. Anyone who posts a solely OOC post in this thread will incur a RP bonus penalty. Also, if a player posts a RP permissions box, you are expected to adhere to the player's set permissions. If that player objects to something you RP, you are expected to adhere to his or her requests, hopefully without my intervention.

With that said, here are the groups and the fixtures!

Dana Loewen had seen many things in the 32 years she coached softball at the university level. She'd seen her team finish with a winless record once. She'd seen her teams finish undefeated three times. She saw her team's dreams dashed in walkoff fashion and win titles that way.

Now, she was about to experience something she'd never had. International competition. Nineteen other nations would be competing in the first World Softball Classic, with the quarterfinal rounds through the championship taking place in Sarzonia. The chance to pick the best players from among the six teams in the country's professional softball league and the top college players gave her some rejuvenation she didn't expect.

She decided she would take 18 players with 10 position players including a designated hitter starting, three depth players and five pitchers. Two would be the starters, two would serve as relief pitchers, while the remaining pitcher would swing between starting and relief when needed. She called up a coach she was familiar with battling over the years to serve as her pitching coach. Lara Townsley's teams almost always led the country with the lowest earned run average of any team at the college level. It was a mark she was proud of in the 18 years she served as a head coach.

So, the roster she'd submit to the World Softball Classic organisers would be as follows:

No. Name Position Affiliation
1 Brandi Jacobs Centrefielder Saugerties Suns (Sarzonian Professional Softball)
Blazing fast, great fielder, little to no power but great patience at the plate.

2 Peggy Spencer Second baseman Woodstock Thrashers (SPS)
Great at turning the double play. Handles the bat well. Also has little pop.

3 Cara Masters Shortstop Portland Comets (SPS)
Not great at hitting for average, but she's known more for hitting home runs. Strikes out too often. A decent, but not great fielder.

4 Karen Crow Catcher Nicksia Junior College
Handles a pitching staff extremely well. Her father was a catcher and her mother pitched in both softball and women's baseball teams for many years. However, she tends to hit into double play grounders.

6 Joelle Peterson Third baseman Wilmington Spiders (SPS)
The younger sister of Sarzonian hockey goalie Matt Peterson, Joelle fields about as well as her brother's girlfriend and is just as blunt as he is.

7 Jana Wentz Leftfielder Woodstock City College
Dangerous power hitter, but is still learning the strike zone. Breaking pitches, especially with her down in the count, can get her to chase. Leave it up in the zone and she can hit it a country mile. Has the worst throwing arm of any fielder on the team.

10 Marti Hendricks Infielder No team
The 35-year-old was coaxed out of retirement to serve as a utility infielder and as depth in the event one of the starting players was injured. She brings strong knowledge of the strike zone and experience in hitting in big situations to the table, not to mention her ability to play second, short or third equally well.

11 Louise Cameron Starting pitcher Portland
She's a crafty lefty and can induce ground balls. She has impeccable control, but is not overpowering.

14 Jacqui Wilcox Relief pitcher Woodstock
She often serves as a situational lefty, but can close down matches in a pinch. However, if you leave her in longer than an inning, she will get tired.

15 Jordan Taylor Rightfielder Portsmouth Spartans (SPS)
Unlike Wentz, Taylor has a cannon of a right arm. Think Dwight Evans in his prime. Even when she's played baseball, no one challenged that arm. She isn't the fleetest of foot, but she anticipates better than any outfielder on the roster.

16 Marta Joseph First baseman Tacoma Rainiers (SPS)
At 5-foot-11 and 210 pounds of pure muscle, she is an imposing sight. She hits for average and power and handles the bat as well as a prototypical No. 2 hitter. She is barely servicable at first base, however.

17 Jill Stanicek Designated hitter Portland
Her knees prevent her from being able to be used as a fielder. That said, she is still dangerous with the bat.

18 Kathryn Adams Outfielder Joe Gibbs University
Can play any outfield position and can be used as a pitcher if necessary. Her arm is adequate, but extremely accurate. Still learning the strike zone, but will be a likely future starter once she does.

20 Concha Gomez Starting pitcher Woodstock
While Cameron is a junkball throwing lefty, Gomez is a hard throwing righthander with an occasional wild streak. The combination of the two could throw teams for a loop if they happened to face Sarzonia on back to back days.

22 Laura Goff Relief pitcher Portsmouth
She is a righthanded relief pitcher and is the closer for the team. She has trouble pitching longer than an inning unless it's late in the season.

23 Christine Jackson Utility player Saugerties
She can play either infield or outfield, though her best positions are shortstop and centrefield. She also has pitched before, so if the regular pitching staff is exhausted, she can step in.

24 Kendra Lemke Swing pitcher Portland
She can either start or relieve, and, like Alan Tisdale on the Sarzonian baseball team, she can also pitch lefty or righty. Unlike Tisdale, she's a soft tosser as a righthander and throws hard as a lefty.

25 Darci Tuggle Catcher Woodstock
She was brought on board to be a veteran backup for the young Crow. Known best for her defence and her throwing arm. Weak bat.

Starting lineup
Jacobs cf
Spencer 2b
Joseph 1b
Stanicek dh
Taylor rf
Masters ss
Peterson 3b
Wentz lf
Crow c

If your team is the home team and your rules indicate no DH, take Stanicek out of the lineup and move everybody up one spot and have the pitcher hit ninth.

Churchma WSC 1 Roster

In Churchma, the game of softball is simply a drinking game. It's impossible (legally) to find young people that play this sport, and therefore this roster is full of those that don't think twice about softball until Friday and Saturday night roll around on the calendar. But don't let that trick you, the Gators players are the best of the best- and they will rarely be seen sober. Don't worry, the only sober person involved with the Churchma national softball team is the team's bus driver. So the odds are that they'll make it to the game in one piece.

Concha Gomez strode to the mound with a slight smile and a not so slight swagger. Everything about her facial expressions and body language screamed confidence bordering on arrogance.

However, only she and catcher Karen Crow knew the truth.

One hour before the first pitch, hidden in a bathroom in the private office reserved for the stadium groundskeepers, Gomez was vomiting. When she picked herself up from the ground, she turned to her batterymate and uttered words she hadn't since the first day she picked up a glove.

"I'm really nervous," she said. "I don't know if I can go tonight."

"You got this," Crow said, although she found herself saying it in an effort to provide Gomez the confidence she lacked herself. Truth be told, if anyone had admitted to nerves before the first match of the World Softball Classic, no one would have been surprised.

The sport hadn't had this kind of stage before, and frankly, event organisers weren't expecting more than four teams. They would have been thrilled with eight. Twenty teams and a full on tournament were both beyond the wildest dreams of people who had to hastily design and create a championship trophy for a tournament that was much bigger than it was expected to be.

You sure could have fooled anyone watching the Stars facing Teinohikira. The team looked for all the world like they'd spent more than a couple of weeks playing together. The professional and college players meshed well, like they'd all been on the same team for years. And they demolished Teinohikira to the tune of a 7-0 triumph in front of a raucous crowd of 700 in the 1,000-seat softball field at the Woodstock satellite campus of Catherina University.

Gomez kept her wild streak largely under control, walking two and limiting Teinohikira to just one hit, a flare into left field that barely eluded the glove of a leaping Cara Masters at shortstop in the fourth inning. She fanned nine and didn't give manager Dana Loewen cause to even call down to the bullpen.

Masters made up for her inability to get to the ball by smacking two over the 85-metre sign in left field, driving in five. Centrefielder Brandi Jacobs stole four bases. All in all, it was an impressive way to welcome the eyes of the sporting world to a sport that otherwise didn't have a stage.

Lady Sparx Take Close One, Start WSC 1-0

CAROGA- Tonight, the Carasatoga national softball team took to the pitch at home against ally Altimarus in a real nail-biter that went into extra innings. The Lady Sparx were expecting a contest and they along with the nearly 9,000 fans that packed Prosser Stadium were not disappointed. The first few innings were tough to watch with the 1st inning seeing only 1 runner get on base from either team, and no-hitters for the next two. Altimarus was the first to crack the score board at the top of the 4th with a double and an RBI. Carasatoga answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the 4th from Amy Johnson as star-player Aleesha Long got the first RBI of the tournament for Carasatoga. The next two inning went runless as well, with Altimarus hitting a home-run at the top of the 7th to get 2 RBI. Down 1-3, the Lady Sparx rallied around Long as she too slammed in a home-run to bring in 2 runs from herself and Christina Robinson. The 8 inning went hitless, as both teams turned up the defense, Stephanie Cox pitching an incredible game. Altimarus almost took the game in the top of the 9th with a two outs and pop-fly to left field with runners on 2nd and 3rd, but Amy Johnson made the catch of the game to keep the Lady Sparx in it. The ladies were unable to capitalize in the bottom of the 9th though, and so a 10th was needed to decide the outcome.

The extra inning was by far the best for Stephanie Cox, who not only threw 3 straight outs, but each were three straight strikes. Invigorated from the performance of their pitcher, the Lady Sparx were ready to end the game and that they did. With only 1 out and a runner on 1st and 2nd, Jaquolyn Perry stepped up to bat and blew the ball out to center field where the two Altimarian outfielders collided, sealing the 2 runs and the Carasatogan victory. After the game, Coach Simmons gave statements about the performance of the ladies, especially the three heroes of the game "Cox, Long and Perry were just great, each of them stepped to the plate at the exact time we needed them to the most, pardon the pun. Altimarus is an incredibly talented team and the coach is a personal friend of mine, it was nice to put on a great match for the fans and for an opening of the WSC." The next game for the Lady Sparx will be Teinohikira who are coming off a blowout loss to hosts Sarzonia 7-0. "Do not be fooled by the wide scoring gap from Teinohikira, they are a telented club as is Sarzonia, and we will need to be at our top to beat both teams, if you thought this game was close just wait and see."

Then came the stunning announcement: Cassadaigua will be sending the husbands, boyfriends, or significant others of the baseball team. OOC: This can work as a roster post, if one wants to be so inclined. I also give people full license to name my players in their RPs.

"Hey did you hear we got a softball team?"

"Good it's about time those submariners had a place to strut their stuff"

"I agree nothing like a good rising fastball to show the best that Milchamian sport has to offer"

"Yeah, so whose on the team anyway?"

"I don't know, nor does it appear that anybody else does"

"Why not?"

"Probably because the MBA is lazy, anyway we're playing baseball now which is much more important"

"True but I would still like to know whose on the team"

"I'm sure if we do well enough somebody will notice that the Warriors are playing and you know actually release the roster"

"Very true"

"So how are our proud Warriors doing?"

"7-3 win"

"Nice"

"Yeah the starting pitcher threw 6 innings of shutout ball before giving up 3 in the 7th but by that point the game was so out of reach it didn't matter"

"That's exactly the type of performance we're looking for"

"Yep"

"So far so good, you think the baseball team can do this good?"

"They better, they're ranked top team in the group"

"Man it's been a long time since that's happened to any Milchamian team"

"Yep and if they fail..."

"Yep"

"Come on you Warriors!"

"Come on you Warriors!"

Interview already in progress...

"...have come about that the Lady Falcons are now Oh and 2. Your thoughts?"

The microphone was shoved once again into Dessea's face, so much for "low pressure environment" that the TSC used to lure her into this tournament. Dessea Vallena-Favella was perturbed, she had losing that's for sure, but to be losing in softball? Dessea clenched her jaw then quickly put on her best smile, a microreflex that she hoped the cameras had missed.

"I would say that while I love the games played between the diamond's, I'm focused on preparing myself for the WBC and having fun." Ahhh, shit, that was did not come out right.

"So you're saying you have no regard for how the team does here in Sarzonia?"

"I didn't say that," Dessea replied gruffly. She spoke slowly, deliberately, "I want us to win." She started up her normal speech again. "I'm just not going to be broken up about it if we lose. I think all of these young ladies, excepting my fellow IBL-ers, understand that life is full of disappointment. We learn in Tarrentum to be tough at a young age. If you work hard at something and you fail - you should feel good if you gave it everything you had. If you didn't give it your all...well that's just too bad, isn't it?"

Another reporter with an up-turned nose asked a question, "Do you feel that Noel Gennesse shouldn't be on this team?"

"Of course not. She's a tremendous athlete and, if the TSC said she should be here, then she should be here."

A follow-up came right after she finished speaking, "And what about being coach by a football coach?"

"Listen, again, softball is softball. I'll help out Coach Italiana if she asks me too, but really I'm just here to stay loose and have fun. I mean, I've hit 4 home runs already...now that's fun." Dessea gave a wink and walked away from the reporters.

One has to wonder when a sense of normalcy sets in for a newly established national team in a sport that's brand new to international competition.

The women who make up the Sarzonian national softball team were all especially nervous prior to the first match they played, even though the nerves didn't show in a 7-0 domination of Teinohikira. With the first-match jitters now out of the way, the question became one of how the team would respond.

After three home runs and a six-run fourth inning that saw the team bat around and knock out the Altimarus starter, the answer was clear: Quite well, thank you. Sarzonia won the match 10-2, as lefty starter Louise Cameron kept hitters off balance all day, causing 13 ground ball outs and four double play balls.

"I just wanted to keep the ball out of [Altimarus's] hitting zone," Cameron said. "Get ahead of hitters, throw strikes, and force them to hit my pitch."

Offensively, Sarzonia (2-0) notched 17 hits, including one by Cameron as designated hitter Jill Stanicek played first base for a half inning prior to manager Dana Loewen going to the bench. Cameron's flare to right field scored second baseman Peggy Spencer for the sixth run in the fourth inning, increasing Sarzonia's lead to 8-0.

"I can't remember the last time I got a hit," Cameron said. "I'll cherish that one for the rest of my life."

"[Utility player] Christine [Jackson] wasn't ready," Loewen said, explaining her decision to use Stanicek in the field, thus forfeiting the designated hitter. "She had to use the restroom when [first baseman Marta] Joseph was hurt." Joseph is expected to sit out the team's friendly in Sarzoclava against Delaclava, but Loewen added that move was precautionary.

"She just turned her ankle a little bit," she said. "If it were an elimination match, she would have walked it off. I'm sure of it."

Meanwhile, Cameron threw just 94 pitches en route to a complete game, the second in a row for the Stars. Pitching coach Lara Townsley said she wasn't concerned about the lack of work the bullpen's had so far.

"The way I see it, if our starters get complete games and their arms aren't really taxed, it will keep the bullpen ready if we need them," Townsley said. Those things tend to even out over the course of a competition like this. At least they have in the World Baseball Classic."

Cameron admitted the World Softball Classic didn't have the tradition or the pedigree of the World Baseball Classic, but she said the enthusiasm she's seen so far from other players and teams toward this competition was a good sign.

"I think people have wanted to compete in this sport on this stage, and I'm really excited that we're giving people a great show," she said. "I don't know what the future holds for the classic, but hopefully, it'll be here to stay."

Darmen finishes first half of WSC Group Stage
The Darmen(3-0) National Softball Team finished the first half of the group stage in the World Softball Classic with a 11-3 win over Ad'ihan(1-2). The story of the Classic for Darmen so far has been pitching. Through three games the team has only allowed six runs. Darmen is currently in first place in Group 3. With one more win the team should be able to garuntee itself a spot in the playoffs. Darmen will play Mangolana(0-3) next, and they should secure the win and birth in playoffs here.

Defending Olympic champions stunned in opening phase of world championship

Riverston, BARRIER ISLAND— The Ad’ihani softball team, the two-time defending Olympic champions from the Third and Fourth Summer Olympics, have started their first world championship campaign with a rocky ride, going 1–2 in their first three games and facing the prospect of elimination at the first stage.

The squad, which includes four of the Third Summer Olympics gold medal-winning team and another five from the Fourth Summer Olympics championship team, has dropped games to Meguroko and Darmen, and face an uphill task in their effort to qualify for the quarterfinals, leading to the premature firing of head coach Jennifer Staunton.

The Ad’ihani Baseball and Softball Federation has appointed Lewis Stevens, former head coach of the LAZY Baseball League's Barrier Island team, as the team's interim in-charge for the remainder of the tournament.

Darmen continues domination in WSC

The Darmen(4-0) National Softball Team continued its domination of the WSC with an 8-6 win over Mangolana(0-3). This is the first game where the pitching was not the greatest and only the Darmens team offense could prove useful to win. Darmen will clinch a spot in the playoffs with one more win, hopefully coming in Darmens next game against Meguroko(2-2).
