MANAGERS' NOTES - CIZEIN-PRIZREN
Madeleine Garnier

Through three races in Mytanija, we haven't had much luck trying to get on the podium. After being in the teens last race, nobody cracked the top forty. Aya and Aleena continue to be some of the most consistent racers on the team, Aleena being someone who has the mentality to hang with a teammate that is more suited for the terrain. Myung absolutely recovered from not finishing the last race with a 57th place finish - not as good as he'd have liked, but he did finish the race. He misjudged couple attempts at moving up the pack and had to settle for just doing what he can.

Nikole was the biggest surprise of the lot to finish just barely behind Myung - and then it was Gustav, with Victoria, Georgina, and Helena being around 100th if not worse. Troi was the one to not finish, having the rare crash as he lost control on a decline while trying to overtake people - and he was sufficiently embarrassed after that, lucky to only have a bruise after that.

It's good that Aya has bee the most consistent of the lot - as she's going to have to be the leader for the next race, the Tour of Težia, with Gustav and Myung being as the key supports for the race. The fourth of five one-stage races, at this point I'm just hoping the team will continue to show improvement and fight as we continue to learn what it means to race at the international stage.

Aya Okayato is the leader for the Tour of Težia.

Nicola walks into the breakfast room in Težia’s Magla Lodge with the purpose of a general about to announce a decisive battle plan. “Ladies, gentlemen, we need to talk.”

Several heads move toward her, not quite swivelling, more an understated turn.

“Tour of Težia, time for tactical terrain… I ran out of t’s. Anywho, this is a prestigious one. And a brutal one.” She pins a profile of the race onto the corkboard. “Uusi, you finally get your mountains.”

Bloodthorn Energy’s King of the Mountain lets out a strange, guttural sound.

“Did he just moan?” Alex whispers to Katharina.

“I don’t want to think about that possibility,” she whispers back.

“Alright. So, 260 kilometres, but the first 200 don’t really matter. Look at the last 60.”

The riders follow the chopstick she is using like a conductor’s baton and several groans fill the small room.

“Six mountains, some of them brutal, not sure if they’re thinking you guys are cyclists or mountain goats, but anyway. Ilcar, I’m really counting on you for this one.”

The sprinter chokes on a sip of orange juice. “What?”

Nicola grins. “Just wanted to make sure you’re awake. You can have some fun until we hit Stara Vogošća, but even if you survive that one, Sveštenikov will be the end of you.”

“Thanks for that vote of confidence,” he sighs.

“20.3%, Ilcar, and then another one with 22%, you won’t make it.” Katharina chuckles.

“Of course I will. Nah, who am I kidding, unless someone puts a motor into that bike, I’m toast.” Defeat accepted.

“So, as I was saying,” Nicola brings them back to the task at hand. “First 200 are just the overture, once we hit the mountains, things will get real, so this is the first race we’ll need some real, serious tactics if we want to stand a chance. Right from the get-go, Solveig, you’re the head honcho for this one.”

“Head honchette?” Artemis barely can keep a straight face.

Nicola groans and takes a deep breath, ignoring Artemis’s quip. “Uusi, you’ll be her adjutant and second weapon, all rolled into one. But I’ll get to that. Christer, you’ll be the number one helper for both of them. Main role: Keep Sol ready, in the top group and out of trouble, and whenever you run out of grains, just drop back. Get her to the last 60 in one piece and then see how far you can go in the mountains. Katha, your role will be in the mountains, try to keep attackers in check and/or get Sol back to them.

Now, the tactics. For the first 200, stay together, stay out of trouble, conserve energy. Even if someone tries to attack, and they will, unless they’re good climbers, they’ll be caught once things turn vertical. So, I don’t want any of you chasing people for nothing. Ilcar, Síofra, you two are the exception, you can just have fun. Once we hit Stara Vogošća, try to stay toward the front, in case someone tries anything, don’t try to attack yourselves, it’s too early for that. At the Sveštenikov, with the 20.3%, we’ll see the field fall apart. Let it, just try to keep the core group in the main peloton.

By the time we get to Hodonji, I want Sol, Uusi, Katha and Christer together, Artemis, too, if you’re around. Up to here, it’s all about keeping position. Brdo Lobanja is where things get real. Cobblestones, one long climb, some parts up to 22%, so this is where we’ll see the first serious attacks. Uusi, I want you to be aggressive and see what’s possible. If we can catch them off-guard, that could be the gamechanger. If you can break away, keep going and see how far you can do this, Sol will monitor the others to either go with them to catch or keep them in check. In the ‘worst’ case, we get the other teams to burn grains early.

At the Zidovi Tezije, we’ll have to take stock. If Uusi is still ahead, he’s going for the win, if he gets caught, Sol can initiate. Depending on the situation, Predragov is where I see the race getting decided, not in the final sprint. If the top group is still together at that point, every attack could be the winner, so I would hope both Uusi and Sol are still in the top group, unless, of course, either of you have managed to break away, so the others won’t know who to cover.

I think we have a real shot at this if we can stay disciplined. Sol, you’re the leader, Uusi, you have the green light to attack as well, Katha, Christer, Artemis, you do whatever you have to do to keep them up front. Any questions?”

Ilcar raises his hand. “Since I’m basically a non-factor, can I have palačinke for lunch?”

Nicola’s proud bravado falters for a moment. “I beg your pardon?”

Síofra interjects. “Yeah, you’ve basically declared him and I useless for the race, so can we?”

Nicola buries her face in her hands with a groan.

Three races, three different team leaders, three second-place finishes.

The definition of insanity might be to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results, but that's exactly what Spooner's Team SLTA–BetRalph have decided to do for the Tour of Težia: changing team leaders once more.

The sprinters had their day with Jacob Whittaker, the puncheurs with Riley Newmont, and the endurance guys with Kyle Cross. And while all three got into the day's decisive moves, none of them came away with the win.

Cross had Vincent Arnoux with him in the lead group as the tricky Ciezin-Prizren classic headed into the final stages, but once Jašar Balašević disappeared up the road, there was no bringing him back. The group marked the Spooner's riders for a while until the cobbles naturally broke the pack up, allowing Cross to go free for second.

With the Tur Mytanija heading into more mountainous terrain, that pattern would hold for at least one more race. Grant Allan has been designated the team leader for the Tour of Težia, with his strong performances over much steeper terrain earning him the nod.

After all, he may not get many more chances for victory this year, as he will be expected to work for Damien Lavigne once the main stage races come around. Indeed, Allan will also get the team leader's nod for Zavolja-Sigurno as the one-day races come to a close.

Can Spooner's finally convert one of these moves into a victory?

Lauri let the phone ring twice. Then thrice. Then he realised that not picking up would only make things worse, but by the time his thumb got the command, he was too late. Fearful, he clicked the redial button.

"Am I paying you to hand out bidons or to build a team?"
"Oh, ehm, well, mister Herrup... Both, I gu-"
"If I wanted the latter, I would buy a self-driving car with an extendable arm out the window, you nitwit. What on earth was that?"

Thankful about the lack of video aspect on the call, Lauri rolled his eyes and tried to calm the tension.

"Not everything went to plan but the opening was splendid. With Nariman in the early break, the team did not have to work."

It was not a good time to tell Herrup that he explicitly had forbidden Nariman Amanetev to go in the attack, Lauri knew.

"I am not talking about that! Five! They were five in that group! Five sitting ducks!"

It was hard to disagree on that. An attack on Redutom saw eight riders disappear in the distance. While technically Amanetev still was on the road, it was clear that he would not be among the strongest riders. Despite Lauri urging for action, only eternal helper Muresanu did a halfhearted effort to bring the attack back. At the foot of Sokolova Stijena, the gap was insurmountable.

"Why were they waiting?" Herrup yelled as if into a horn all the way to Mytanija.

Lauri could find no answer for his team boss or rather realised that 'they did not feel like doing that for Qasim' was not enough.

"And where was Zeru?"

That was an easier one.

"His legs were not great and..."
"He's paid handsomely enough to get a proper set of legs! It is very simple, Lauri, either you get them to work together next time or that creditcard is getting shut."
"Well, hmm."

Lauri tried to collect his thoughts. Getting stuck in a foreign country, with tons of staff under his responsibility and no cash sounded bad.

"I had planned to let the road decide for such a hard race, with-"
"No such pampering, Sillave, just be clear. I wanted everyone to ride for Qasim Fajr in the Tour of Tezia!"
"It's a hard race for his type-"
"Well, in that case I hope he gets a lot of help from Zeru and those other no-goods."

With that, Herrup ended connection. Build a team, build a team... that was easier said than done. Lauri had hoped that being on the road together would make them gel together automatically, but so far it was no success. The thought alone made him groan, but he started to search 'typical Mytanijan teambuilding' on his phone.

Jašar Balašević was confident. The first couple of major races in the season, Trofej Gazvoda and Severyan-Cassia, may not have ended in Mytanar glory. But he was determined to ensure that Ciezin-Prizren would be different and most importantly, he was confident.

He had good reason to be. A group of fifteen riders had got away over Redutom after the race had been split open over the various cobblestone sectors. There was a strong Mytanar contingent within the lead group too. Jašar was there, of course, but so was his teammate Husnija Pahor. Husnija was a very similar rider to Jašar. A bit of a rouleur-puncheur hybrid who loved to attack and could handle even the roughest terrain. Both were very good descenders, as well as being able to plot a safe route over Mytanija’s rough cobbled roads. They made a strong double act.

There was also Nikola Kapun from Air Raknija Cycling, but he could be someone to work with too, someone who could look past team allegiances to try to forge a Mytanar victory by hook or by crook. Sead Psalić and Sinan Bajraktarević were also there for Unis-Oslobođenje. Jašar was a little bit unsure of how well they might work with him and Husnija. Unis-Oslobođenje were a team used to working towards a singular goal, usually the general classification of the major stage races, they didn’t usually work across team lines – preferring instead to try to impose their own strategy. They might not be useful allies in the closing stages of Ciezin-Prizren.

The Liventian team Spooner’s-SLTABetRalph had four riders there. They had been in good form in the opening two races of the season and were well represented once again here. Mytanar media had earmarked Vincent Arnoux as a particular contender for the hillier, cobbled one-day classics, but they had a number of cards to play in the lead group and that made them dangerous. There was also representation from Bloodthorn Energy, Futuroplesse, Énergïya-Poştalıq Odaq, Tirol Radsport, Wonder Froyo® Cycling and NGADM TJUN-ia Cycling. Jašar was less familiar with most of them, but recognised Artmis Moorcroft and Yves Girard-Gachet, the former from Rushmori racing and the latter from Prahecqois riders sometimes coming over for the odd Mytanar race.

It was a strong group, and they quickly realised that they had broken the race, with the groups behind scattered across western Vojovitica’s roads and unlikely to mount a concerted attempt to pull the group back. There was only one cobbled sector left and then Sokolova Stijena 13km from the finish. The advantage which the Mytanar riders had was they knew the roads better than anybody else. Jašar knew that getting to the front in the run-up to Sokolova Stijena was vital, as there was a slight downhill which you could gain speed on and carry it into the hill. The road also narrowed significantly for the climb, so being the leader meant you could control the pace and prevent those from behind passing.

It was inevitably where Jašar was going to make his move.

“Husnija,” Jašar beckoned on the run-in to Sokolova Stijena. “How are the legs?”

“Mate,” Husnija glanced around to try to ensure none of their competitors could see what he said. “My legs are cooked.”

“I’m going to go on the climb,” Jašar grinned. Husnija shook his head. “Follow me and try to block them from following.”

“Sure, I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to stay with you, but I’ll try to slow them.” Husnija smirked back.

The pace heightened as the group rode towards the climb. Everybody stayed together on the cobblestone sector before it, though Nikola Kapun tried a dig to get away. And then everybody watched each other on the run-in to Sokolova Stijena. Around two kilometres out the Družba Svobode got to work. Husnija led Jašar in, trying to raise the pace, burning all his matches to get Jašar in the best position possible over the climb.

The group was strung out with Husnija’s pace on the front, but a few tried to come up alongside him and as the road narrowed the group returned back to being strung out with the lack of room. Jašar stayed on Husnija’s wheel and as they entered the climb immediately launched off it, overtaking him and starting his attack from the bottom of Sokolova Stijena. Jašar could hear his team over the radio, shouts from his directeur sportif and then from Husnija over the radio.

“They aren’t following! They aren’t following!”

Jašar smiled to himself and gritted his teeth. The climb was over a kilometre with an average gradient of 11%, absolutely brutal. They would gain 143 metres in altitude, from a lowly 77 metres to 220 metres. Jašar knew the roadbook inside and out. That wouldn’t necessarily help him right now though. It was his pure athletic ability, his determination and digging as deep as he possibly could after 265 kilometres and about six hours of racing.

Every metre hurt, but eventually he reached the top. Then, it was the technical descent back down into Prizren, being greeted by packed crowds in the city centre, cycling up the infamous Golden Lane and finally, reaching the red kite to signal the final kilometre.

Jašar knew he had won when he went under it unopposed. Nobody had fought their way back. He had put around a minute into his competitors in a phenomenal effort up the climb and a daredevil descent. He could afford to take minimal risks in the final kilometre, steadily steering around the final few corners before taking his hands off the handlebars, making the sign of the cross and looking up the sky before shaking his head.

Tears flecked his eyes. It was the 26-year-old’s biggest career victory, Ciezin-Prizren, arguably the most famous of Mytanija’s one-day classics. He raised both his arms above his head and crossed the line.

Attention immediately turned to next week’s big race following Jašar’s victory. He had been mobbed by photographers after crossing the finish line, his teammates and the team’s soigneurs fought to find him. A few competitors congratulated him too. He attended doping control and was asked a series of questions about the race, but soon the queries came about the Tour of Težia.

Jašar knew he was less likely to compete for the victory there, but he smiled to himself. Mytanar cycling never sat still. It went from one race to the next and there was barely a moment to savour the big moments. He’d ensure he allowed himself – and his team – a moment to savour this one.

“What a fantastic victory for Jašar,” gushed the presenter of MKV’s cycling coverage. The public broadcaster put significant amounts of money aside to ensure cycling was on free-to-air television each year and in doing so they were able to get a big name in broadcasting in Elizaveta Suljić. She also led a lot of MKV’s football coverage and occasionally even led on some of the primetime entertainment programmes on Friday and Saturday evenings.

“He’s expected to lead again for DS at the Tour of Težia,” she continued. “But a number of other Mytanar team leads will want to have their say too. Who can challenge him in this sort of form? Julian Leskovsek for Air Raknija Cycling? Martin Ukalović for Agrokomerc-Kafa? Maybe his fellow Jašar, Jašar Izetbegović for Unis-Oslobođenje? Who knows? We’ll see you at the Tour of Težia and we shall find out! See you then.”

Aya Okayato is the leader for Zavolja-Sigurno.

It had been the best-executed race of the Tur Mytanija to date. Coordinating in tandem, the team had set the race up from the beginning - Victoria took the brunt of the beginning, handed off the burden to Troi, then Georgina, then Helena, then Nikole, the five of them being expended in an effort to set the team up for success. Aleena continued to race well in courses not the best suited for her to catapult them into the top seventy-five, and the trio of Gustav, Myung, and Aya were in the final pack as the race neared its finish.

Partins made the right move to sacrifice himself for the greater good, and the duo of Myung Hyun-Jung and Aya Okasato bounded their way with the front of the pack near the end of the race - a chance at a Top 10 finish, and maybe the podium, in sight.

As the race neared the final stretch, Myung got caught up in some racers slightly behind the lead pack, and it all fell to Aya Okasato. Try as she might, her final attempts to gain an advantage on the lead pack fell just short, and Okasato finished in fourth place, fifteen seconds off of the lead trio but seventeen seconds before fifth place. It was by far the best result for the team so far, and a testament to how well they can do when they're actually on the same page about racing smartly.

With Zavolja-Sigurno being the final race before hitting the multi stage races, Aya would once again become the lead rider - she had the best combination of skills in climbing, endurance, and handling, after all. Aggressiveness was her weak point when it came to the end of races - as evidenced by the race that had just occurred - but if the team took advantage of the fact that they were all pretty durable as a whole and tended to do better in the mountains befitting a team from the Mountain District, they now had the proof of concept to improve upon.

They were truly in the thick of things now.

Four of the five one-day races in Mytanija's cycling calendar are behind us now, but none of the Magnier-BadenMarkt riders have particularly distinguished themselves so far. Mia Rechthild and Pascal Gervais finished toward the front of the classement in the Trofej Gazvoda, Severyan-Cassia, and Ciezin-Prizren, with finishes in the top 20 or 30 riders each race, but there has been little consistency, especially in the rest of the team.

The Reçuecians who had come to Mytanija to test themselves against the best cyclists in the multiverse had hoped to shine in the mountains; growing up and training on the cols and climbs of the Alps had instilled the Reçuecian riders with a sense of superiority. But mountains aren't unique to Reçueçn. Perhaps it was a rude awakening for Magnier-BadenMarkt to realize that they aren't the only team in Mytanija that specializes in climbing, or the only competitors eyeing the Tur's KoM jersey at the end of the season. But the Reçuecians had no reason to be as surprised as they were by the caliber of their competition. They should have seen it coming a mile away.

The Tour of Težia over, Francine Robiquet was still sweating on her cool-down trainer just outside the Magnier bus when Fiore Loreto finally rolled across the finish line almost ten minutes later, and hopped on another stationary trainer next to her.

"How are you feeling?" Francine asked, raising her voice just a little to be heard over the whir of the pedals.

Fiore could barely speak. He panted for a moment, then finally gasped, "Shit!"

"You okay? I thought you were going to hang further forward with me," Francine said.

"Damn, I meant to! I just lost my legs. Halfway up the Brdo Lobanja and I just didn't have it anymore. I don't know what happened."

"Are you gonna be ready for the Zavolja-Sigurno? It's coming up soon."

Fiore gave her a rueful look. "Don't even mention that right now. I don't even wanna think about those climbs."

"Have you looked at the profiles? None of them look quite as bad as the Brdo Lobanja to me," said Francine. "And it's the shortest one-day race on the calendar."

Fiore raised his eyebrows as if she knew something she didn't. "It's not just one climb, though," he said. "You thought the terrain on that opening loop was bad today, just wait for the next race."

Fiore and Francine were not the only Magnier cyclists cooling down. Most of the team was there, spinning easily on their stationary bikes. A couple trainers down, Carl Stiglitz hopped down, and walked toward the pair, mopping his face with a towel.

"Are you two already talking about the Zavolja-Sigurno?" he laughed. He gestured to the finish line, just a few meters away. "The last riders haven't even crossed the line yet—they're still getting ready to present the trophy! You guys gotta stop worrying about the future and live in the moment!"

"We finished the race though," Fiore protested. "It's not like we're distracting ourselves from trying out best. We're just already locked in on the next competition."

Carl just chuckled. "Whatever works for you, as long as your legs don't give out again like they did today! But I don't think stressing about the next race prematurely is gonna do you any good," he called over his shoulder as he went up the steps into the team bus.

Fiore grunted in frustration.

"Hey, Fiore chill, this is a cool-down, remember," Francine said, watching him rev up on his trainer. "Don't take it out on your bike."

"It's easy for him to talk smack the one day he finishes six minutes ahead of me, but I didn't hear that kind of attitude in Cassia when I finished in the top 20. Or in Gazvoda when I finished 25."

"I don't think he means it personally," said Francine. "He just says whatever pops into his mind. Hell, if I was as easy-going as he is, maybe I could have been the team leader at the Zavolja-Sigurno. But I'm not. He is."

"Our cheery captain, that's Carl Stiglitz," grumbled Fiore.

"Urgh. What unhinged psychopath concocted this route? Or is it sociopath? I forget the distinction."

With a large map of central Mytanija unfurled across his lap, Lyndon Punt was grimacing as he traced out the route of Zavolja-Sigurno and counting up the obscene amount of contour lines its path traversed. Seeing what awaited him in the first fifty kilometres had already made him baulk and the further along the route he got, the more he thought he'd rather boil his own legs in acid than compete in this two hundred and twenty three thousand metres of unadulterated agony. Unless the team had a strategy that involved him simply trundling along at the very back, it was going to be quite the opposite of enjoyable.
Not that any race is truly 'enjoyable', but at least on the flat he could get involved in chaotic sprints and manage his pace better. Mountain events were just ugly grinds up a pointlessly steep incline before dicing with death on a pointlessly steep decline. Rinse and repeat until the finishing line. Lyndon didn't actually mind the downhills so much, but getting to the necessary altitude was enough of an issue to rob any enjoyment he might possibly glean from bombing down a mountainside.

"First up Orlov Krš should take it. Providing they can keep on two wheels until Sigurno."

Sharing the room with Lyndon was Arne Hyul. As far as their cycling proficiencies went, he was nearly a polar opposite of Lyndon though socially the two were similar enough to often seek each other's company. Arne revelled in a brutal slog over undulating territory and was actually looking forward to Zavolja-Sigurno. Whereas Lyndon saw only pain on the route map, to Arne it was like a series of chess positions; points of potential attacks and gambits, points to maintain tempo, defensive 'chokepoints'. To him, this route wasn't the work of a sadist, but a cleverly concocted strategic battle of climbs of increasing magnitude.

"Pfft. I don't think I'll make it as far as Orlov Krš. Think I might peel off before Vučja Glava to throw in the towel."

"Wimp. Have the team orders been issued yet by the way?"

Arne realised near instantly that he was asking the wrong person. There had been many strong words issued to Lyndon regarding his escapades at Severyan-Cassia after his failed solo breakaway attempt had left the team strategy in tatters. Although the team were now keeping the headstrong sprinter on a short leash, it wasn't like Lyndon cared that much and with it being a mountainous race, his relevance would be little to none. For Arne though, there was a very real chance that he would be Team ParaCom eKelp's main rider for Zavolja-Sigurno. Stjepan Kornjačelovac was arguably a stronger climber than he, but likely would be maintained to challenge for general classification in the upcoming multi-stage events when Arne would play his contracted role of domestique. It was just a question of whether the powers that be would let him lead here for a one-off, or expect him to support Stjepan as a 'dry-run' of stages yet to come.

"Yeah, totally have actually given how amazingly close me and the boss-man are. You're playing 'bitch boy' again."

"Really? Domestique-ing?"

Lyndon rolled his eyes

"C'mon man, I'm messing. Like fuck I know. I'm just hoping my orders are 'have a cry', and 'come last' or else there's gonna be problems.

“Artemis, wake up.”

Incoherent noises from under the blanket.

Síofra sighs and shakes the curled up mound. “Yo, time to get up. Now. We’re already halfway through breakfast.”

Grumbling and what almost sounds like a growl.

“Don’t make me escalate this.”

The woman under the blanket shakes her head.

“Uusi? Get the water!”

The shape goes still. “You wouldn’t,” comes her muffled voice.

“One way to find out.”

Artemis does not move, trying to call the bluff.

It was not a bluff.

***

10 minutes later, Artemis emerges into the breakfast room of the team’s small hotel in Zavolja, hair still humid and sticking out in several places, levelling a death glare at Síofra and Jooseppi. She grabs a cup and pours coffee, not bothering with milk or sugar. After her second cup is downed and a third is filled, she sits down, still not saying a word.

Director sportif Nicola raises an eyebrow. “Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, I see?”

“Hmph.”

Katharina laughs. “Yeah, she’s a true ray of sunshine in the morning.”

“Well, our ray of sunshine better listen up because she’s going to be the main event here.” Nicola gets up and turns over a corkboard with the profile of the last day classic of the season, Zavolja-Sigurno, with three major mountains, Vučja Glava (Wolf’s Head), Crni Kamen (Black Stone) and Orlov Krš. She is waving a chopstick again, looking suspiciously like the one she had used in Težia. “As you can see, this one is almost flat.”

“Another palačinke day,” Síofra says lowly in a sing-songy voice, earning her a stern look from Nicola and a chuckle from Ilcarthon.

“Only three this time, but they’re big-uns. Since last week almost worked out well, let’s try this again tomorrow. We didn’t win, but I think we managed to save energy compared to some of the other teams, which is why we’re going trident again.”

Solveig takes a bite out of a protein muffin. “Be careful with that or Poseidon’s going to file a copyright claim.”

Nicola ignores the quip. “We’ll start things like last time, let people do their shenanigans while things are still flat, Andrew, Katha, just keep Sol, Artemis and Uusi in position, don’t chase if some people try to break away, anybody cocky enough to try something this early on is an idiot.”

Nods from the team. Other than Artemis, whose forehead is resting on the table.

The chopstick points at the first mountain. “Vučja Glava, 6.1% but a whopping 7.2 kilometres will see the first riders fall behind. That’s normal, but still way too early to attack. No, not even you, Uusi. Once we get to Crni Kamen, it’ll get more interesting, ‘only’ 4.8km, but 6.1% average with some 14% sections. That’s when things will really break apart and we’ll see the first serious attacks. Christer, you’ll be there with Sol and Artemis to keep them toward the front, I don’t necessarily want you to chase, though, because I’m worried that it could take too much energy for the Orlov Krš. Uusi, you can test things a bit, but I still think it’s too early, but if you feel that there’s a real chance, you can give it a shot, in the worst case, you’ll have some teams chase and waste energy.”

Jooseppi nods, Artemis gives a vague thumbs up, her head still down.

Nicola sighs, but continues. “Orlov Krš. That’s where it’ll go down, so we can have some fun. All three of you have the chops to attack, so we can play with the others a bit. Uusi, if the legs feel good, go for it. Attack, try to pull away. It’s not that long, but steep, so if you time this right, you can really put some distance between you and the others, and they know how strong you are, so they will chase. If you can get away, awesome, go for broke. If they catch you, Sol, attack and Artemis sits on the favourites to make them hesitate.

Now, if we can get all three of you over the top roughly together, Artemis, you can win this just through the descent. You can outbike pretty much anybody out there, just please try not to fly off the edge of a cliff or something, okay?”

Another thumbs up.

“If they somehow catch her, Sol, you can try to break away when they merge, but overall, I’m putting my money on Artemis for this race. Any questions?”

A snore from Artemis gives Nicola at least one answer.

Time and time again, his phone vibrated and Lauri knew that it would be Mikkel Herrup, the LiitBank teamowner ready to chew him up. But if he looked around the bus here in Tezia, he could see a spark of hope for the races ahead. Previously, most would just fall back in their seat, huddled up with their phone and barring the always enthusiastic voice of Reio Nurme (and possibly some curt replies from the poor sap seated next to him), it would be quiet. Right now, there was laughter and the kind of post-race banter that made Lauri enjoy life on the road.

The performance in itself had not been great, judging by the result. A top finish in 17th, by no one else but Muresanu, was far below the expectations. But one could not blame the guys, who had done their best to execute the commands given. Qasim Fajr was a bit surprised to hold the lead position for the team and would afterwards admit that it was humbling to see former Downwind Tour winners such as Garzarain and Tewodros nurse him through the peloton. The two climbing faces of the squad could have ignored the youngster, but chose to stay with him, all the way across Zidovi Tezije. Their efforts to regain ground on the leaders was futile, but the symbolism of having the light-blue jerseys leading the chase group warmed Lauri's heart after struggling in the previous races to find his riders on the small screen in the car.

Garzarain and Tewodros had not been the only ones to outperform themselves in the service of Fajr. Muresanu had been given the role to hang on to potentially dangerous attacks and act like a sandbag there. He did it well enough to nearly get slapped by one of the fiestier Mytanar opponents, something the grinning Oreasanuan considered a mark of honour. Peet Morsman, on the other hand, that barrelchested sprinter, had pulled himself apart to get back in contention after both Brdo Lobanja and Zidovi Tezije, providing bottles before finally getting dropped on the first meters of Predragov. At the front of that group, Fajr had made an attempt to bridge to the front but burned his matches too soon. Even bridging to Muresanu was too hard at that point. Disappointed and ashamed, the timid Chanirlian mumbled an apology to the bus.

"Sorry guys, I went as deep as I can."

Much to Lauri's delight, it was Txuki Garzarain who voiced what the others couldn't.

"No worries mate, we were all exploded," and grinningly he added, "and nearly dehydrated."

Peet played along and protested, before joining the laughter.

"In a way," the strong team captain admitted, "it's a miracle we fucking made it."
"Or found the way."

And that's true. Lauri's search to typical local activities to fraternize (worryingly) all pointed in the direction of a bar. It was not a great idea, the team coach thought, but one drink won't ruin weeks of focused training. Besides, he always had thought that 'icebreakers' and 'trust falls' were pure bullshit. And yes, he craved for a beer himself anyway.

Originally, he had intended to keep them to beer, but apparently every Mytanar bar stocks up on enough hard liquor to bridge six years in isolation and the guys, energized like a kid in a candy shop that had been withheld sugar for months, got the enthusiasm of the bar maids who kept on finding new bottles. Each and everyone was authentic, locally distilled in some region where they would race and after the third one, Lauri had stopped his performative protest. Carrying home Jaakko Lepp was, in hindsight, a pretty good teambuilding exercise in itself: the heavy time trial specialist, chanting ineligibly, held in the air by a set of weak-kneed skinny climbers must have been quite the sight to behold.

The reconnaisance ride the day after was first postponed (only youngster Kallerund managed to get out of bed, but only to vomit on his cycling shoes) and eventually replaced by a calm coffee ride. Amanetev paid an espresso for all, after losing the bet the evening before that he could balance a full glass on his back while riding around the pub on the bar maid's folding bike. In that one evening, the single-minded Amanetev had said more to his teammates than in the three weeks they were on the road already. Afterwards, he had returned to silence but no longer put in his earpieces or simply walked away from every non-required presence.

Lauri looked around the team bus once more. The results were not there, but it could not be long now. For the final classic, he had come up with a pretty solid plan. Qasim Fajr would go up the road early, Zeru Tewodros got the right to attack on Crni Kamen but in the end, all riders would support Txuki Garzarain for Zavolja-Sigurno. His form was quite good already, with Zeru's targets further down the calendar, and while previous reports on Txuki disputed his leadership skills, Lauri found him quite enjoyable in the role of grizzled, perky but wise man.

His phone once more vibrated. The hair dryer treatment seemed unavoidable, so Lauri stepped outside not to bum the guys. In his heart, that was the punch he had to take for them. But on the other hand, they had raced visible and in group today. Maybe, just maybe, this was a congratulatory call. One that confirmed that, yes, the results were not there, but the build-up was clear? Hyping himself, Lauri enthusiastically decided to strike first.

"Hi, mister Herrup. Not the result we hoped for, but what a great performance at the front row of the action, am I right?"

A second of silence.

"You have ten seconds to explain an eight-hundred dollar tab in, judging by the name, Mytanija's sleaziest bar. Or else I'm cutting you guys off."
Oh shit.

Jašar Izetbegović felt good. He had put in a solid performance at the Tour of Težia, not quite able to follow Grant Allan’s winning move, but at least being on his coattails and those of his great domestic rival Julian Leskovsek too. The Tour of Težia wasn’t usually a race which Izetbegović targeted, but with a much larger international field, this year was a good opportunity to test his legs against the rivals he would face off against at the Tur Mytanija later in the year.

It was particularly important given the stage profile of the Tur’s Stage 5, which covered the last 60 kilometre of the Tour of Težia as it traversed the route from Ibon to Težia. It used the same climbs: Stara Vogošća, Sveštenikov, Hotonj, Brdo Lobanja, Zidovi Tezije (Thessia’s famous walls); and of course, the Predragov to the finish. It would be a stage before the big mountains which could put Jašar into the pink jersey if he played his cards right. So he wanted to test his legs against those who were likely to challenge him there and he certainly managed to do that.

The Tour of Težia this year seemed to follow that theme, with a lot of riders that Jašar would consider to be general classification contenders right up there in the top ten places. It did make sense, the race had lots of climbs which were that steep that just being a puncheur wasn’t quite enough. A lot of classics around the world had short, sharp climbs to get over which caused races to be broken up, but the Tour of Težia was a little bit different – the climbs were even steeper, a bit longer than most puncheur’s might be comfortable with, and some of them were pitted with large cobblestones which could get slick and slippery and cause riders to lose their grip as they made their way up.

This edition of the Tour of Težia didn’t disappoint. The rain drove down and caused the riders to pull on their rain capes. The cobblestones were indeed slick and Jašar regularly found his wheels slipping from under him. In the end they got away as a group, Brdo Lobanja providing the backdrop for the race being split open and then the walls of Thessia further splitting the lead group down. By the time they got to the Predragov, the star of the show, the race’s final climb up to the finish at the Avdivedjic Synagogue, there were only four left.

Jašar was there, as was Julian Leskovsek, a rider Jašar was very familiar with. The Liventian, Grant Allan, was there too and his team had been remarkably consistent thus far in challenging for podium places without ever quite tasting glory. Aya Okasato, the Chromatik rider, was with them too. She had been stakhanovite in working together with her competitors to try to get the lead group away and Jašar suspected she may flag as they went up the Predragov and that was borne out as Julian Leskovsek put the first attack in and Jašar and Grant Allan immediately followed. Jašar tried to just mark the other two because his legs were slightly leaden after a very hard 258km, but as soon as Grant Allan went up the road neither he nor Julian Leskovsek could follow.

Chapeau, Jašar thought to himself silently. Julian Leskovsek beat him in the sprint for the line, but Jašar was pleased enough with his form.

This wasn’t necessarily his territory, but Zavolja-Sigurno was a true high mountains test, it was the part of the Thessian region which this year’s Tur Mytanija did not cover. That would perhaps mean that the foreign riders would be a little less familiar with it. If they didn’t see it in the roadbook for both the Tour of Težia and the Tur Mytanija then they may not pay it quite so much attention. Jašar was very familiar with the western Thessian roads though, being a native of the region and he fancied his chances being team leader with the whole of the Unis-Oslobođenje team backing him throughout the race.

He would have to keep an eye out for Julian Leskovsek leading Air Raknija Cycling once again, as well as Martin Ukalović in good form and leading Agrokomerc-Kafa, and Jašar Balašević – a race winner already this season – leading Družba Svobode.
