Yukon River Wilderness would like to inquire about power solutions for a small island colony that will act as a supplying station for possible Antarctic colonization. You can read about the project here. Having explored the island for geothermal activity, we do not believe the island to have enough activity to support our colony, and have turned to other renewable sources of energy. The island, being located on the western edge of Tierra del Fuego in Patagonia, does not receive a lot of sunlight, so we figure solar power is out of the equation. However, the land being an island with no real western barriers, we are intrigued to some extent by tidal power. However, we must admit our main attraction is to wind energy. As any who have been to Patagonia can attest, the wind blows constantly in those latitudes, making wind power almost 100% reliable.

As the colony will comprise at most 75 households (more likely is that there will be half that number) and a small handful of domestic buildings such as a small warehouse (about the size of a double occupancy small plane hangar), a large greenhouse, and perhaps a cafe. In addition to these requirements, due to the distance between our extreme northern nation and this colony in the southern hemisphere, we will convert small UTV vehicles to electric power so as to avoid cost of shipping inordinate amounts of diesel fuel. We anticipate a vast majority of vehicles will operate in this manner, and due to the small number of households, do not anticipate more than 50 of these vehicles. All together, our engineers estimate a daily power consumption far less than even 1,000 households would use. The remainder of the island will be used for research and supply operations, with small caribou herds to be transported to the island to serve as a main food source.

Since our requirements would be so small, we are unsure what the best solution would be for our needs. Again, we are leaning to wind power as there is a nice hill site which would be subject to sustained winds, and because it is not burdensome if there are minor repairs or adjustments which must be made.
