Antarctic Cities (MT Open)

Australia has a claim of approx. 2/3 of the continent of Antarctica. There is not much there except a few research stations. However, Australia wishes to change the face of the uninhabbited continent. There are currently three Australian research stations in Australia's Antarctic Territory; Mawson, Cassie and Davis. Australia wishes to convert these research stations into cities. These three cities will be the start of Antarctic colinisation, and there will hopefully be futher expansion.
The first step will be to build an international airport, a few office buildings and houses, a port, a basic transportation network and a basic telecommunications and a basic postal service, and will expand into vast metropolises.
There are a few issues that we must adress first, however, the first is the extreme cold. Other issues include a secure water source, food source and medicine source (although medicine may not be an issue due to the cold killing diseases) We do not view the midnight sun/polar night as an issue, as people experience it in the North Pole

Purpose

Postby Australian rePublic » Mon Feb 03, 2014 3:06 pm

Australia feels instead of asking a "why" question with building Antarctic cities, or any issue for that matter, it is better to ask "why not".
If Australia builds cities in Antarctica, we will have cities in every climate on Earth. We will also increase tourism to the continent, we'll make the continent attractive for people, we will almost double our area, see our Antarctic claim recognised as sovereign land, and we can live up to our name "Australia" which is derived from Terra Australis, the largest landmass located entirely in the Southern Hemisphere.

Greetings on behalf of the Aspari Syndicate.

We are interested in providing assistance to your cause; we have recently begun studies regarding exotic forms of ice, and we feel that Antarctica would serve as an ideal launching point for our investigations. As such, we are prepared to assist in constructing a more permanent, cold-resistant port to ensure your men can receive the supplies they need. We also wish to inquire about your opinions regarding foreign construction within your borders: if you would permit it, we have recently finished a trial run for an extreme climate water desalination plant and we are prepared to offer one to you for far below market price. The prototype is quite functional, and though it may require extra maintainence and some tweaking, it should cover your needs. We also benefit, as we gain valuable working knowledge of the plant's operation in Arctic climates.

Last but not least, we have recently begun converting a portion of our industrial sector to agriculture; as such, we have a surplus of food ready for export. We can hash out a trade agreement as well if you like, and if you would be willing to accept our other offers, we can also offer a modest discount on the food export as well.

We hope you will consider our offer; we look forward to hearing back from you, and potentially working with you further.

Warm regards,

What need from the Internation Community

Postby Australian rePublic » Mon Feb 03, 2014 4:37 pm

Support, really, not financial support as we have the money but support and ideas on how to solve the problems. No, we don't plan on building domed cities

From the One Stop Rules Shop:
*Excessive Bumping: Bumping is adding a meaningless (*bump*) post to a thread to push it back to the top of the list. Bump rates vary between forums, but as a rule, once every 24 hours is the maximum outside General or II where it may be acceptable to bump any thread that has fallen past the first two pages. If the bulk of your posts, or posts in the thread are bumps, you should take it to mean that there is not enough in your topic, and let it end.

We have caught wind of your plans to construct cities on antartica. We support your ambitious projects and would be honored to secure contracts with your nation, especially a contract to construct your international airport. We have already made a draft to show you what we can create for you.
Concept is attached below. Several developments in insulation and snow clearance have stemmed from this draft, many of which we will happily provide for you at discount rates.

We can negotiate the cost for this airport should you choose to accept. We have always been proud of our efficient, tight schedules.

If there are any questions regarding RP, send me a TG and I will do my best to answer any questions.
Premier Thomas Willette wrote:I dont think this has much RP value.

If you believe an RP to have no 'RP value, then instead of openly stating it, tell the OP via TG. From your post, it is clear that you do not intend to RP in this thread, so the basic thing to do is not post in this thread. It is clear that you are not willing to contribute, but instead bash on this RP. People don't like that. I recognize that it is your opinion, but some opinions need to be kept behind closed doors. ;)
Thank you,

-Tiami

Mitheldalond mentioned the excessive bumping rule. I'd advise you to post in moderation and ask for all your bump posts to be cleaned out. It will make the RP look nicer.

We thank you. We will contract you to build our airport. In exchange for this, all of the airlines of your nation have the right to use it for free. You will also get a street named after your city, and an office for your construction company located in every major city of Antarctica, and the rest of the nation, which is subject to no more restrictions than what are placed on Australian companies. Attention: All potential colonizing nations of Antarctica

Vibrance Ocean Voyages has recently become aware of plans to colonize the continent of Antarctica. We understand that such endeavors are difficult, especially in the most difficult weather systems in the world. Of particular difficulty is for the colony to obtain some amount of economic freedom so as to not become a burden to the home nation, and thereby be scrapped by the home nation before the colony's full potential is realized. Such has been the doom of many ill-fated colonies throughout the history of global expansion. We estimate that if a colony can adequately survive the first ten years of its existence, showing growth during that original time period, it will successfully transition the colonial period.

We believe we serve a mutual interest to offer a proposal to all interested colonizing nations and their colonies. Vibrance Ocean Voyages is an international luxury cruiseliner serving coastal ports of call all over the world. Our market projects a high demand for ports of call located entirely on the southern continent, assuming that interesting activities can be secured for guests once ashore. What self-respecting world traveler wouldn't leap at the chance to view penguins in their natural environment, recreate a historical dog sledding voyage, sled down Antarctic dunes, or even sleep in an Antarctic base camp tent, all while viewing the Aurora Australis? And don't even mention the local cuisine market for Antarctic delicacies.

Our proposal is simple: Vibrance Ocean Voyages promises to jumpstart the local economy of Antarctic colonies by bringing in 2800+ tourists on every cruise to each successful port colony who joins on as a port of call. To give extra incentive, Vibrance Ocean Voyages would like to offer three individual grants to selective colonies.

The first is worth $5 million NS dollars, paid as economic stimulus to the first colony to successfully set up port operations and apply for a port of call agreement on our main storefront page. To be considered for this award, the port city must appropriate a local tourism market by opening at least one local eatery, one tour or activity operator, and preferably retail establishments. In addition, while the funds will be awarded prior to the life of this requirement, the receiving colony must stay in operation for the duration of the 10 years we estimate needed to successfully transition the colonial period, and the port made accessible to Vibrance Ocean Voyages ships during this time frame.

The second, worth $2.5 million NS dollars in economic stimulus, has the same requirements as the first and will be awarded to the second port city to set up operations and apply for a port of call agreement.

The third, worth $1.25 million NS dollars in economic stimulus, has the same requirements as the first two and will be awarded to the third port city to set up operations and apply for a port of call agreement. Additional ports of call will be accepted on an as-available basis, but will not be eligible for the economic stimulus grant.

To distinguish your application from other nations, only nations who appear in this thread will be eligible for the economic stimulus grants, and must note applying for the grant in your port application. Economic stimulus payouts will be to further solidify administration and growth of the colony. All economic stimulus awards are the sole reward of the individual colonies, and must be spent to further establish the colony. This means that the mother country is inelligible for the economic stimulus money unless that money can be directly tied to the economic growth and infrastructure of the colony. Such an example would be to supply the colony with raw materials or supplies. We cannot stress enough that the purpose of these grants is for the growth of Antarctic colonies.

Vibrance Ocean Voyages wishes you well in your endeavors. It is not without reason that Antarctica has remained without substantial colonies short of the few weather stations in operation. However, we believe the pioneering spirit that led the early expeditions to the South Pole will be made triumphant in your own journey to conquer the southern continent. We wish you godspeed.

With all due respect,
Charles Cassidy, CEO, Vibrance Ocean Voyages

Your offer has been approved. We thank for helping us with our endeavours to build Antarctic cities, and we would like to reward you with blocks exclusive to tertiary industry for your nation. These four blocks will not be subject to any more restriction than that of which we place on Australian industry. Since you are investing so much money, we'll also name three streets after your nation

From the desk of Kobuk Fairbanks, Head of State, The Arctic Frontier Conservatory of Yukon River Wilderness

Seeing as how:
our extreme northern climate in many ways mirrors that of some coastal regions of Antarctica;
a number totaling some dozens of Yukon River Wilderness residents have first hand, direct knowledge of Antarctic conditions;
experienced engineers maintain valuable experience harnessing geothermal activity to the end of creating heating and electricity;
our nation possesses a valuable reserve of raw petroleum resources; and
our people's very nature is that of being true frontier pioneers;

The Arctic Frontier Conservatory of Yukon River Wilderness hereby makes known our sovereign plan to establish a city-colony on the Antarctic continent. Such city-colony will be placed on the Antarctic Peninsula laying outside the claimed territory of the Australian Republic, and located at roughly a latitude of 64 degrees south, longitude of 61 degrees west. Should this location prove unfeasible, another coastal location on the Antarctic Peninsula will be chosen.

Yukon River Wilderness has recently sent out a reconnaissance mission to scout potential city-colony sites in northern Antarctica, believing this area to be the only feasible site for a city on Antarctic soil. Having found a harbor protected from much of the area's immediate marine and weather patterns where ships can safely dock free of ice floe, having suitable land area to support a small city with airstrip, and containing natural geothermal activity, our scouts have identified the area at the above coordinates to meet the most immediate demands for successful supported colonization. Attempts by other nations to establish a colony within a 25 mile radius of the selected coordinates will be treated as an encroachment on Yukon River Wilderness sovereignty and a declaration of enmity, with possible international repercussions.

As an extension of international friendliness and cordial desire to establish successful colonies throughout Antarctica, Yukon River Wilderness would like to invite countries considering colonization to perform research within our northern climate. Geothermal engineers will be given limited access to our electric plants in Chena Hot Springs, and teams of mushing dogs bred from the finest in the industry will be made available to interested parties. Additionally, clothing designed for our interior which has a history of reaching -80 degrees F, will be made available to the colonies, both in synthetics and in the natural skins and furs used by our Inupiaq and Yupiq populations. Perhaps most importantly, our ports on the Arctic Ocean, most significantly Umiak Point, the northernmost city in our nation, will be made available for studying the effects of sea ice, the polar night, and other invaluable research.

As for our nation, the the next step to colonization will be to find a suitable site north of the southern continent, bearing fuller summers and vegetation to raise a large herd of caribou, to establish a support station where supplies can be warehoused year-round, especially the raising of caribou conditioned to similar climate, and to establish greenhouse operations in support of this endeavor. It is our hope that the Antarctic city-colony will be able to support upwards of 1,000 people, and that the feeder support station will house up to 250 people.

We welcome all supporters of our cause.

With pride,
Kobuk Fairbanks

Yukon River Wilderness has agreed to terms with Ushuaia Tierra del Fuego on a small, uninhabited island in the southern hemisphere. The islands is located at approximately 55 degrees, 18 minutes South latitude, 70 degrees, 0 minutes West longitude. The island contains a land area of approximately 15 square miles. It includes an area conducive to building a harbor. Terms included market shares of raw petroleum, gold mining dredges, and construction and continued operation of geothermal power plants. Ushuaia Tierra del Fuego will retain rights to the island, but Yukon River Wilderness will be allowed full use and access.

A number of kit houses will be shipped shortly to the island, as well as a steel building to be constructed on the island for use as a warehouse. Plans for a small geothermal plant have been placed on hold as we believe a wind energy farm on the southern hills will be more beneficial. Materials for a small cable tram to easily traverse the hill will also be shipped. Once these are constructed, plans are to transport a herd of about 400 caribou to the island for use as food source for the Antarctic port.

Caribou Station, the island Yukon River Wilderness has negotiated as a supply colony for possible Antarctic cities, seems to be progressing well.

The kit homes are almost finished being built by Yukon River Wilderness construction teams stationed on the island off of the coast of Tierra del Fuego in the Southern hemisphere. It has not been as arduous a process as first anticipated and the team is ahead of schedule. A vessel carrying the wind turbine to provide more than enough energy to the entire island colony is on its way.

Caribou Station's leadership is currently considering whether or not to transport the caribou herds this year or not. As winter is quickly approaching in the Southern Hemisphere, we are uncertain whether a transition for the herds would be wise given that they have just endured the winter in the Northern Hemisphere and will need summer to recouperate. The most likely scenario is that construction of community buildings, including the community center, meat processing center, and warehouses, will continue through the Northern Hemisphere Summer, and that Caribou herds will be transported during Northern fall or Southern Spring, allowing for an extended summer for the herds before going into their first Southern Hemisphere winter.

In addition to the kit houses, some small amount of UTV utility vehicles have been delivered to Caribou Station for use by the residents there as transportation for herding the caribou (and other working needs, as the island and resulting colony are small enough to otherwise not warrant vehicles).

All is well on this front, and we anticipate installing the wind turbine on the island's southern hill within two weeks.
