“Yes, and we will have live coverage of the opening ceremony here on GNN where the Secretary-General Domènec Duesaigües, a Rodavese, will be making a speech welcoming everyone to this year’s session alongside speeches from other delegations. AN Session - Reno Touches Down

Image
September 1st: The Prime Minister arrived to little fanfare in the international city.

(Bellman) -
Assembly staff flitter to and fro across the international city as they prepare their yearly ritual - the annual session of the Assembly of Nations, where delegations from across the globe meet to hash out their differences and vote up or down on international resolutions. This session is seen as a quite important one, because along with the usual business of international diplomacy, there is the question of the Assembly's next speaker; the presiding officer of the assembly sessions is a particularly influential front-facing position within the global body.

With the significance of this session of the Assembly, it comes as little surprise that a number of A-list guests are expected to arrive over the next day or so, including foreign ministers and even heads of state and/or government. One of the first arrivals, landing in the early morning local time, is Prime Minister Reno. Her office confirmed only a few days ago that she'd be in attendance, with the late confirmation coming as something of a surprise to observers given the rhetoric of Reno's government, which has been interpreted by some as anti-multilateral. Nevertheless, Reno continues the UD tradition of high engagement with the Assembly.

The Prime Minister arrived complete with a full collection of orbiters. Foreign Minister, Rienier Halavo, was in the dog house earlier this year for comments that conflicted with a Council of Ministers white paper on anti-imperialism, but he and the Prime Minister seem to be smiles and waves today, presenting a united front. Anne-Marije Hoogeven, Halavo's deputy from United, is also in tow. Machiel Klaasen, the UD's senior plenipotentiary to the Assembly of Nations appointed by Reno's predecessor, is an old expert at the craft who's expected to be a moderating influence. Also spotted disembarking was special plenipotentiary Sieb Oosterloo, Klaasen's younger mirror and an up-and-comer in the international scene - some on the ground are predicting him as a major candidate for Speaker.

Reno's gravitational pull captured the Apsican permanent representative in the city, Ko Lourens, on the runway as she shook hands with the assembly bureaucrats consigned to welcoming duty. The Prime Minister made a short statement to international press, before she and her entourage embarked on into the city. Though there's more than a day before the actual session begins, it's expected that the Prime Minister will have a full itinerary of side-meetings beforehand, which are common at the major assembly sessions.

"I'm very glad to be able to attend this session of the Assembly of Nations personally," Reno stated. "The United Dominions has always a strong supporter of this institution, and I firmly believe that it is incumbent on us as international leaders to make the very best effort to maintain peace and justice between nations. I also believe that the best outcomes will be reached by a firm and fair representation of the interests and concerns of our nation, and that is what I intend to present over the coming days."

Prime Minister Muirenn Arrives at International City of Olympus
September 1, 2021

Prime Minister Effie Muirenn, along with Foreign Minister Killian Mac Ghabhann and a cadre of diplomatic staff arrived in the International City of Olympus this morning ahead of the upcoming 54th session of the Assembly of Nations. Prime Minister Muirenn, who has used her three years in office thus far to attempt to bridge the gap between the capitalist and socialist worlds, was reportedly in good spirits on the flight over. Sources indicate that she was eagerly discussing plans alongside Mac Ghabhann regarding the itinerary for the trip.

Before embarking on her trip to the International City, Prime Minister Muirenn stated:

"I consider it one of my most important duties to represent Dau Sel on the global stage. The challenges of today are global challenges that we must all work together to address."

It appears Muirenn and Mac Ghabhann will be some of the first to arrive at the assembly, neither wanting to miss an important opportunity to discuss important matters with international leaders and other high ranking officials. Both have actually forgone a planned stop at their scheduled accommodations in favor of heading directly to the assembly, instead sending several staff members to check in at the hotel.

Muirenn has faced strong criticism from Gilroy Thore, president of the Revolutionary Socialist Party, and other members of the RSP for behavior they feel is too "pro-west". The RSP has taken a strong stance against Muirenn's attempts to "tear down walls and build bridges" as she stated during her speech after being sworn in three years ago. Thore was quoted as saying about the trip:

"I'm not opposed to diplomacy, but it is important to remember who your friends are and who your enemies are. I'm not sure Prime Minister Muirenn can tell the difference."

It is still far too early to tell what this upcoming session may bring but we at The Day to You at CPD1 will keep you informed every step of the way.

Prime Minister Marysa Verhulst - AN Arrival

Image
September 1st: The Prime Minister arrives in the city alongside her husband.

The International City looks forward to a week of negotiating and voting as political leaders across Greater Olympus arrive into the city for the opening ceremony of the Assembly of Nations. The Prime Minister arrived into the International City alongside her husband early this morning to little fanfare. The Foreign Minister was with her as they departed in cars and sped towards the CBD to meet the delegate but not before talking to the media briefly.

"The Foreign Minister and I are grateful to be invited to the Opening Ceremony of the Assembly this week," Marysa said. "I strongly believe the Assembly of Nations is a great international institution for nations looking to represent their concerns and interests on the stage of the world. I look forward to engaging with fellow political leaders across the world. Twynam continues to firmly support the Assembly of Nations.

Indeed, the quick media conference contrasts to the tone of previous Prime Ministers, who at times were quite public with their views on illiberal nations.

However whilst Marysa offered no criticism herself, the visit has attracted fierce criticism at home from a couple members of the Senate with Senator Sibren in a fiery speech calling Marysa "a globalist fool" yesterday attracting boos from Marysa's government senators in the senate and sending shock waves through social media.

The first order of Business after the initial celebrations will be electing a new Speaker of the Assembly. Twynam is not expected to be nominating a candidate themselves however with rumours of other potential candidates spreading across the Olympus it will be no surprise if a candidate from the United Dominions or other democratic and like-minded nations receives the vote for Speaker. As part of the visit, it will be expected that Marysa meet with political representatives from other nations to negotiate Twynam's vote as well as taking the opportunity to discuss foreign affairs.

We will be live-streaming the Assembly speeches on our media channel. View the time table here.

This was the one. The paint on the doorplate had recently been changed.

She opened the door to find everything exactly as it had been five minutes ago. The bed was made, the floor cleared, the television off. That same strange mix of citrus and rose seeped from the wall outlet diffuser. It all had been exactly as it was when she left, much to her relief. The thought that any change at all could happen in such a short time was both foolish and terrifying at once.

She entered, noting the door to the balcony still wide open to the summer air. Stepping through and out onto the white stucco, she found him—sitting in his chair with a blanket over his legs. He was watching out to the sea as a cloud momentarily blocked the sunlight.

"Here's your coffee." she said, placing the porcelain saucer on the table next to him.

"Thank you, Marshella."

He went back to watching the sea, as if he had suddenly and abruptly forgot she was there. Only a few moments later did he turn and motion with an aged hand towards the other wicker chair on the balcony. She sat, crossing her legs and watching him. He looked over, his blue eyes tired...exhausted, but when he spoke his voice carried none of the same feeling.

"Where was....ah." he cleared his throat and continued, as if he had never stopped to begin with. "It wasn't warm that day, I am told. Not like today..."

State Secretary Ao arrived Wednesday afternoon in Olympus
09/01/2021 Yaronan

Olympus -- In preparation for the 54th session of the Assembly of Nations, an airbus from Carosone containing high ranking Verbanian officials touched down in Olympus this afternoon. Leading the procession was State Secretary Golan Ao and members of his staff. Undoubtedly to the chagrin of other visiting delegates, Ao stepped off his flight to the sound of boisterous pipes, as has been the tradition of visiting Verbanian ministers since 1946. Notably, neither President D'Barzi nor Vice President Fane were spotted among the arrivals. Ao himself declined to comment on the missing heads of state when pressed by reporters outside the the AN headquarters.

The absence of the President has raised speculation and concern with homeland political commentators. The choice to send State Secretary Ao as formal delegate brings about many agenda quandaries, markedly because of Ao's relationship to the president. Ao, who formerly served as Chief of smallander Giwa Circuit for two terms, has been noted as an ideological counter to the president and his placement as State Secretary a bargaining bid during the 2019 campaign. The decision to have Ao serve as top delegate, if true, will undoubtedly anger members of D'Barzi's own party.

If unleashed, it is possible Ao will ruffle feathers over several key international issues. A known firebrand that has denounced international revolutionary efforts and a Verbania-first policy, Ao's influence over the Verbanian vote for the Speaker of the Assembly has yet to be seen. It is also unclear who Ao may party with in the International community, having expressed apathy toward colonization in opposition to the president. Rumors of a potential Ao candidacy in the 2022 Presidential elections has brought even more particular attention on the State Secretaries performance in the upcoming Assembly meeting.

Having given even domestic news outlets the cold shoulder, it is yet to be seen what any of this means for Verbania's participation in the international conference or what the choices of delegates says to Verbania's friends and foes. One thing is for certain: this is the nation's chance to have its voice heard on important regional and global affairs.

Ferrer arrives with Rodavese delegation at AN session

Ferrer and the Rodavese delegation in the International City of Olympus

Prime Minister Marc Ferrer and his delegation arrived in the International City of Olympus on Wednesday, not only to reaffirm their status in the world but to hopefully boost the Rodaves' international influence at the AN's upcoming speaker election. Ferrer left Cartaganca on Monday on his way to his 3rd meeting the AN since his rise to power at the head of the National Workers' Union (UNO) in 2019, a big part of the UNO's foreign policy being diplomatic international influence since the withdrawal of international overseas Rodavese troops in 2014. Ferrer intends to speak at the meeting, stating "My administration has prepared to give a speech to the Assembly of Nations. We've been a strong supporter of international diplomacy since my party has been in power and we intend to reaffirm that today".

A reason for Ferrer's intent to make a strong impression is most likely Domènec Duesaigües, the former Rodavese Prime Minister from 2005 to 2009, who has served as the Secretary General of the Assembly of Nations since 2018. A prominent figure in Rodavese politics over the course of the 2000s, most Rodavese are currently happy with his current seat. However with his term ending in 2022, many in the Rodavese delegation are hoping to put up a Rodavese for the speakership in order to maintain their influence with Duesaigües on the way out. There was debate within the Rodavese delegation however, with some suspecting that running a candidate now could harm their chances in both the speaker election and election of the secretary general in 2022, however Ferrer and company elected to run a candidate in the election this year anyways.

Many in the New Conservative Party including Emili Montmajor endorsed Marc Flors, the former Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister under Lluís Gratallops. However the more likely candidate as a favorite from the governing coalition lead by Ferrer is Montse de Dalt, the former Finance Minister under Pere Martí and later Amàlia Gaià from 2013 to 2019, as well as a candidate to succeed Martí as Prime Minister after he announced his resignation in 2017.

No matter what happens in the Assembly of Nations over the course of the next two days, the meeting should be a big one for the Ferrer government in terms of it's foreign policy going foward.

Staatspresident Garhardus Kriel, alongside Adjunk-eerste Minister Ruan Pieterson, of Kleinberg, has recently touched down in Olympus City to attend the 54th Assembly of Nations to have the voice of the Baanbreken on the international stage. Arriving with a small contingent of staff and security, Garhardus Kriel was approved to attend the global conference by the Volksraad. Back in Kleinberg, Kriel’s choice to attend the meeting was met with shock due to former comments Kriel openly made criticizing the Assembly of Nations as a “cesspool of international arrogance and lobbying.” Kriel’s arrival will mark the first time Kleinberg has sent a delegation to attend the Assembly of Nations within the last decade.
Image
Kriel meeting reporters near his residence

Other members of the BV have criticized Kriel’s choice to attend the Assembly of Nations as they cite his hypocrisy of attacking the AN, yet choosing to attend, which they see as an endorsement. These critics, which include Sebastian Opperman, one of Kriel’s staunch political supporters, say Kriel should have continued to not involve Kleinberg in an organization they see as corrupt and against Kleinberg’s interest and values.

Reporters interviewed Kriel shortly after he arrived at his temporary residence. Kriel only made a brief statement.

“I am happy to be here to represent Kleinberg’s voice to the world. This will be a great opportunity to express and protect our interest as a nation and on behalf of our citizens. I look forward to meeting the other delegations and working together to serve our peoples.”

When asked about his former comments and the criticism he faces, Kriel replied “I still believe the Assembly of Nations has its faults, but the Baanbreken deserve to have their government be their safeguard and be their voice to the international community.”

Despite vocalized resistance to Kriel’s voyage, the majority of the BV and the two other houses of the Volksraad approved Kriel’s appearance at the Assembly of Nations. Kriel, Pieterson, nor the Volksraad have made any public statement on exactly what message they want to say to the world, but most suspect that Kriel and the Volskraad want to take a strong stance against “encroaching socialism.”

Kenneth sifted through the briefing book on the Rodavese delegation absentmindedly, he had always felt the Rodavese were an arrogant and pompous bunch, and only by the virtue of holding the Secretary General's seat did they warrant his attention. Their reign was scheduled to end in only a few months, but rumors in the diplomatic circles hinted at Rodavese intentions to secure the Speaker's chair of the Assembly, further cementing their international influence.

"Absolutely preposterous that we allowed a colonizer to lead the world's international body. The atrocities they've wrought in Lira alone.." Kenneth grumbled to himself.

Arecelis Belmonte, the Lykensburgish nominee for Speaker, raised her eyebrows, "Kenneth, when we meet them, you're going to have to be polite." A wry smile appeared on her lined face.

He rolled his eyes and put the thick binder down. "I am always able to turn the formalities on for diplomatic events, you know that." He paused briefly. "But I am not reading any more of this briefing book, the flattery is much, I'll have an aide deal with all of that." He waved his hand dismissively. His Consul General, Eneida Villalobos, pursed her lips in response.

"I do enjoy having to do the tasks that you deem beneath yourself, your Excellency." She jested, using his formal diplomatic style. He shot her a dirty look before picking up the next thick binder, The United Dominions. He read silently for a few minutes as the bustle of activity in the suite continued. Arecelis continued editing her speech for the nomination, as the Lykensburgish Ambassador to the AN, Candaleria Velásquez, and his Press Secretary, Adrián Banderas, offered notes and editions. Eneida was huddled with several of her staffers working on possible avenues to attract the support of fellow delegates for Arecelis's bid for the Speakership.

"What of the Apsicans? It's been a while since I've spoken with Prime Minister Reno but we did have a lovely discussion when she was first elected."

Eneida tilted her head back and forth as she thought, "They've been relatively skeptical of the Assembly on the whole, but Reno's stated she believes it's a good way to maintain peace and justice around the globe. I'll have to poke around with the Ambassador's staff to gauge their opinion of the SecGen, but it's possible we could find an opening. We're also looking to secure the backing of the Storsnian delegation, we've had close ties to them for years and we're sure they'd had to see the successes of Sondrol be overturned."

Kenneth nodded, privately amused at the sausage making that still occurred even in the posh and formal diplomatic circles, just as it thrived in the bareknuckle brawling of politics.

The Meijer Building, Olympia
Prime Minister Reno had met already this morning with more functionaries, plenipotentiaries, and representatives of various international bodies and organs of the AN than she could count on her hands, all pushing for this or that measure of support - more peacekeepers, more development aid, more contributions to the international city... more. Finally, the first meeting penciled into her day of any real consequence, the President of Lykens. Diaz had some disagreeable views, though no more so than Labour and Reno had six of them voting for her. Possibly, they could be of some value to each other.

It was with that possibility in mind that Reno entered the conference room in the Meijer Building - neutral ground provided for exactly this sort of all-to-common side meeting. Quietly filing in behind her, the full entourage. Stood across the table, Diaz and his own retinue. Reno extended a hand, offering a firm handshake. “President Diaz, how good to finally meet you in person.”

Kenneth reciprocated the handshake, slightly taken aback by the firmness of the grip and vigorousness of the diminutive woman across from him. “The pleasure is mine, Madame Prime Minister, I have been an avid fan of yours since our first phone call so many years ago. I am still slightly shell shocked that we are about to engage in statecraft right now.” He flashed a humble smile as he took his seat.

“Your political talents are the stuff of legend in Lykens, I assure you.”

“Ah, you’re a charmer, Mister President.” The Prime Minister smiled, but lost none of the focus in her eyes. As she sat opposite Diaz, her underlings followed, Foreign Minister Halavo conspicuously quiet relegated to the far end, keeping Hoogeven busy, while closer in to the action were those she considered of use to the situation.

“Now, to that matter of statecraft,” Reno clasped her hands on the table, looking to her left, “Mr. Klaasen has been quite busy formulating plans for such things over the past weeks,” the older plenipotentiary nodded to the Lykensburgers politely, “but I’m certain you and your team have exciting propositions of your own?” The question hung in the air for a moment, Reno glancing along the line of representatives opposite.

Kenneth nodded along as the Prime Minister spoke, a smile not quite reaching his eyes sitting upon his face. “As the more senior world leader, I believe you are entitled to lay your propositions first, Madame Prime Minister, we both know that the Assembly of Nations is in dire need of experienced, tried and true ideas to bring it forward.”

He turned to his Consul General, Eneida Villalobos, on his left and nodded to her, “But I am sure that our teams can come together on practical, pragmatic solutions to the challenges ahead.”

“How chivalrous. And right you are Mister President, right you are. It is in that spirit that my government has drafted a very key resolution which I’d like to share with you. Machiel?” Plenipotentiary Klaasen produced several copies from his folder, handing them across the table. Though they’d take some time to process entirely, the gist of them could be understood from the cover page, entitled Abolishing Modern Colonialism. “We like to think that the institution of empire has no place in the twenty-first century. Wouldn’t you agree?”

Kenneth leafed through the packet he had just received, nodding as he skimmed through its first few pages. Eneida likewise nodded with raised eyebrows and turned to an aide behind her to whisper to them.

“Marvelous work, Madame Prime Minister, I have to commend you and your team for such a forward looking vision. This is certain to ruffle some feathers in the Assembly, but what is power unless it is used for the greater good?” He closed the packet and set it down before him.

“Now I’m sure it’s buried in this packet here, but I’d like to query you, without an iota of pretense or hostility, or facetiousness, but how would your government respond to critics who decry the arrangement of your illustrious nation with that of Twynam?”

At the question, Foreign Minister Halavo winced slightly, and the plenipotentiaries glanced to Reno warily. The Prime Minister, for her part, faced the question as cliffs face a wave. “Of course, such a question is expected to be raised as a facade to undermine the resolution’s good nature. Thankfully, there is nothing to worry about on that front, Mister President. The Commonwealth of Twynam has been autonomous since the 1840s. Legislatively independent since the 1940s - thanks to the early work of my party. They could very well abolish the monarchy in Twynam tomorrow, if there was desire for it. The people of Querol and the like have no such capability to seize on their own will. Yet.”

Kenneth’s eyes narrowed as his smile began to slowly reach his eyes. “You would do well, Minister Halavo,” His emerald gaze swung to the deflated looking man, “To not judge your Prime Minister so, she is an impressive woman and you should take notes.”

He returned his eyes to the woman in front of him. “The most satisfactory answer one could hope for, Madame Prime Minister, our delegation will be happy to co-sponsor the resolution and assist in working towards its passage. It is past due time for the world to move on from its dark and oppressive past, and work towards a more equitable and just future. The Apsican Dominions will find a strong partner in the Federal Republic of Lykens, and I know that our partnership will ensure a better path for Olympus.”

The tension in the Apsican delegation seemed to recede. “How encouraging it is to hear that.” Reno replied, no more relaxed, but perhaps slightly more amicable in tone. “Likeminded partners are a valuable commodity in today’s geopolitical landscape. I’m sure that we’ll go far together with such a mindset. Now, is there anything we can help you with this morning, in the spirit of reciprocity?”

Kenneth blinked slowly, tilting his head ever so slightly to the right. “As you are aware, the Speaker’s chair is vacant in the upcoming session. The Lykensburgish delegation plans to nominate the honorable Arecelis Belmonte,” Kenneth gestured to his right, “And Arecelis would be most appreciative of the support of the Aspican delegation. She is free to meet with you independently after the conclusion of our meeting to discuss any concerns or questions you might have. She is one of the brightest International Relations minds Lykens has to offer and I am sure you would agree after taking the time to speak with her.” Eneida stiffened and began to lightly tap her fingers on the table as Kenneth finished.

Arecelis chuckled at the commendations and folded her hands together. The Aspican delegation’s support would go a long way towards her bid and it seemed that the dominoes were falling together nicely.

As the question of the speakership was finally broached, the Apsicans again shared a glance, bar the Prime Minister who remained engaged. Havalo and Klaasen looked to Sieb Oosterloo, the junior plenipotentiary who was a favourite in the diplomatic circles for the United Dominions’ own candidate. “High praise,” Reno stated as she looked over to Arecelis, smiling, “and valuable, coming from a man like President Diaz. I’m sure my representatives would relish the opportunity to talk shop with you, when your schedule allows.”

Turning back to the President, she continued. “I’m quite certain that the Apsican delegation to the Assembly tomorrow will be voting for the right candidate for the job. From the sound of it, that may be your nominee.” As the words spilled into the room, there were a few furrowed brows on the Apsican side betraying that such a concession may not have been previously discussed. “We’ll have to see as the talks pan out over the day, of course, but,” Reno glanced back to Arecelis, “I have every confidence that we will arrive at a suitable candidate to speak for a modern world. In the same sense,” Reno’s gaze returned to Diaz, “I have confidence that we will arrive at such a candidate next year, when the question of the Secretary General is raised.”

Kenneth remained silent for a few moments, simply looking at the Prime Minister. He turned to look at Oosterloo, and nodded. “You are very wise, Prime Minister,” He turned back to his counterpart, “I am beyond ecstatic that we were able to meet today. Your people are very lucky to have you, and quite frankly so is Olympus.”

He stood and extended his hand. “These discussions have been most fruitful, and the entire world will benefit from them.”

“I can only agree, Mister President.” Reno stood. Another firm handshake, and they were done.

Tanayan delegation in Olympia
Presidium stands divided

The political leadership of Olympia arrives at the eponymous International City for the 54th Session of the Assembly of Nations. Today, People's Commissar of Foreign Affairs, Anna Kalafatova, has arrived at the International City with a cadre from People's Commissariat of Foreign Affairs, Republican Economic Council and several other commissariats.

Before her departure, COMFOR expressed her belief in the AN on a press-conference. "We have long believed the Assembly of Nations was a sorry excuse for an international institution but its recent successes show nothing but the opposite. Although not everyone seems to understand it, the AN is becoming a force to reckon with."

"I maintain my belief that while there will be fundamental differences between capitalist and socialist world, the cooperation is possible and we must not hedge it."

The choice of the representative was a topic of much debate in the Presidium and the final choice of the People's Commissar was not a product of consensus. Other candidates included Chairman of the Republican Economic Council Alexandra Stamboliyskaya and the Presidial Commissionaire for Political Cooperation Mirai Higuchi, both members of the Presidium. Although the Commissionaire was not available for contact, the Chairman of the REC issued a brief note condemning the choice of the Presidium and the Central Executive Committee.

An excerpt of that note reads: "Furthermore, comrade Kalafatova is an adherent of the principle of capitalist-socialist detente. Although that principle was necessary to maintain while Tanayan economy struggled under the treasonous covert liberals, this is no longer the case. We must not be distracted by powerless marionettes of international institutions in the pursuit of what we are obliged to pursue."

COMFOR was not available to comment but sources close to her reported that she dismissed the note.

Gabriele Schäfer
Administrator of the United Republic of Merrain
En route to the Assembly of Nations
20:10 WMT, Sat 04.09.21

“You understand, I’m flying halfway across the damn world for your idea. Excuse me if I don’t act more thrilled to be here.” Administrator Gabriele Schäfer said to her campaign manager, Turgon von Braun. “And don’t give me some wisecrack about how I should be flying halfway across the world anyway, because this is clear on the wrong side of the globe.”

Schäfer sat alone by the window, with Turgon standing in the aisle a few rows down. She refused to meaningfully interact with him, having grown increasingly annoyed with the antics of pre-campaign campaigning. National law prohibited campaigns outside of a prescribed period of time, although she had been roped into agreeing with Turgon’s argument that certain… things could be arranged to make the path forward a bit easier in the future.

“You know this is the best thing to do right now, ma’am. Mende represents a threat to your reelection next year, and what we do today is going to provide us with a way to have him exit the stage. Not only that, Mende represents a threat to the whole count-”

“Oh, spare me.” Schäfer scoffed. “The country’s as fucked as it always has been, we’ve just gotten better at hiding it. What’s Mende going to do? Expose everything? Might actually do some good for once.”
Turgon sighed dramatically, marking his surrender in this encounter. They’d been down this road many times before, and while he always acquiesced to her, he always won in the end. His strategic genius is how she got elected 16 years ago, in the politically defining election of 2005, and the last time she defied him, she paid the price. Turgon knew that she dare not make that mistake again.

Image
Jürgen Mende stood outside of the Merranese Diplomatic Mission in this international city, waiting for his boss. Well, he thought, not really my boss. She can’t tell me to do shit. Lado’iss.

In the brisk late summer wind, he continued to wait for the Administrator of Merrain’s arrival, the first such visit in many, many years. Despite the importance of such an event, Mende made sure to keep publicity to a minimum. No need to grant this woman more political ammunition than what she was capable of conjuring up herself. Soon, the cars rounded the corner, the usual dark-blue armored sedans that accompanied the Administrator wherever she went. They stopped on the street in front of him and his small welcoming party, and a door opened, revealing Gabriele Schäfer herself.

“Welcome, Madam Administrator.” Mende said graciously, offering up no other words. Instead, he closed in for a handshake and a light embrace, pausing for the cameras. Schäfer played along, as she was wont to do. He braced himself, because when this brief moment of pleasantry was over, he was in for a week of torment.

“How quaint, Jürgen.” Schäfer said as they broke apart and made their way into the building. “I had hoped for more of a welcome, but I suppose I should have expected that when I nominated you to the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs. How is that coming, by the way? You’ve had a few days to mingle around, I take it?”

“I have, and there is very little to report. All quiet on the western front.” Mende replied, enjoying the eye roll he elicited from Schäfer from the old wartime phrase he liked to use with her. Mende never could resist the opportunity to be a thorn in this old hag’s side. A penchant that probably netted him more grief than satisfaction, but he made the most of it when he could.

“So, no Turgon with you today? Must be nice, having that old leech off your side for once.” Jürgen said, walking into the stateroom where he would meet with Schäfer and her team as they prepared for the upcoming session of the Assembly of Nations.

“No. This is a strictly diplomatic affair.” That was a lie, of course, Schäfer thought to herself. She had left Turgon explicit instructions to remain with the airplane. Perhaps a bit unreasonable to ask, but the civilian jet was roomy enough. Though, to give more credit to his skill, she figured Turgon probably had already slinked his way off there and into some nondescript accommodations.

“So, let’s get down to brass tacks.” Schäfer said, beckoning Mende and his personnel to seat themselves on the other side of the table. Packets had already been placed before their chairs, stuffed to the brim with likely useless and redundant information – information that Mende probably already knew from being out in the field for decades. “You know I wouldn’t schlep myself all the way here for nothing. Any other session, any other election, let them figure it out for themselves, and we’re happy to support them. That’s how we always do things.

“This time, though, I want to try something different. Be a bit more proactive.” Schäfer said, with just the slightest hint of wile in her tone in that last word. Mende leaned back into his chair, as if bracing himself for something.

“Merrain has done well enough to provide for her citizens, and I want to start focusing on the rest of the world while we’re at it. Why should we be so greedy as to keep everything for ourselves, right, Jürgen?” Schäfer said. Mende groaned internally, as he listened to this woman begin to parrot his entire foreign policy platform.

“You of course know all the relevant details. In these packets are all the foreign policy objectives that have been cleared by my office. Well, most of them. Some other, more classified stuff will be coming your way shortly,” she said, and when Mende twisted his mouth into a gesture of quiet disapproval - just as she expected, no less - she added, “and that’s not all.”

“I want to nominate you for Speaker.”

GIFFTTAN MAKES ASSEMBLY ENTRANCE

As the Assembly of Nations' fifty-fourth session draws near delegations from all over the world have been arriving at Olympus to mark this special day.

President Eric Llywelyn arrived earlier today with his delegation - snapped, quizzed, and filmed wherever he went. Among those joining him on this momentous occasion were Prime Minister Daniel Fôn, and Foreign Affairs minister Hywel Prichard. President Llywelyn said upon his arrival that he was looking forward to attend the Assembly, and to work together with the rest of the world to maintain peace and prosperity throughout the world. He also said that he believes a close tie with the Assembly will benefit Gifftan immeasurably, and will cement it's position on the world stage as a powerful and competent nation.

Not all agree however - criticism surrounding the President's confidence, especially surrounding international relations. Opposition leader Mr. Dewi Roberts is here with me now, Mr. Roberts, what do you make of the President's attitude as he arrived at Olympus?

"I think it is very foolish, and incredibly naïve of President Llywelyn to showboat like this, especially given Gifftan's dire economic situation. He seems reluctant to admit that his country is on the brink of poverty, and instead prolongs this façade of a strong and powerful nation, when in reality Gifftan lags behind the rest of the world in almost every field. His people are hungry, ill, and poor, and he will be living it up halfway across the world rubbing shoulders with leaders of civilized countries. Gifftan is a laughing stock."

Strong words there from the opposition, but nevertheless Gifftan's arrival at the Assembly has been reached with overall positivity. We took to the streets of Caerwydn earlier to-day to seek the opinion of the man - or woman - on the street.

"I think its wonderful that Gifftan is making another appearance, we need to show the world that Gifftan means business."

"What rubbish. I'm no globalist. Gifftan should do as it wants to with no interference from anyone else. Why should we care how some Rodavese or Twynamian thinks? I'm a proud Gifftanian, I can do as I like."

Image

"The Assembly of Nations is an institution. I think its good that Gifftan can be seen standing proud with other nations, it'll show the rest of the world that we're still to be taken seriously."

(and so on...)

The Presidential Suite,
Olympus Hotel

President Llywelyn loosened his tie as he leafed through the neatly typewritten documents strewn accross his desk. Glancing every once in a while at the various newspapers stacked in front of him. Delegations from almost every country in the world would be attending the assembly. He studied the photographs of the various leaders and their entourages. He looked up at his own delegation, typing, telephoning, scheduling, busy gathering information and making last-minute adjustments. He was to make an impression at the Assembly, he must project a figure of power, and of authority, he thought. He reached into his coat pocket for a cigarette.

"You can't smoke in here. The hotel has a no-smoking policy." His secretary stood by his desk with another stack of documents. "You need to look over these too."

He threw the pack into the wastepaper basket. "Fine, copy these and fax them back home will you please." He handed her a folder. "And get me a list of names and titles please, I don't want to embarrass myself in front of the whole world."

He bit his nails anxiously. All these rich, powerful, and prosperous countries will be meeting together, and Gifftan, a penniless relic of a bygone age. He glanced again at the photos of Presidents, Prime Ministers, Chancellors, and Ministers. How they must all look down on him, he thought. He rose from his desk and walked around the suite. Secretaries, Aides, and Ministers gave him furtive glances, before putting their heads down and rushing back to do their work. He stood by the window and stared out. He could see the Assembly building, and a strange feeling of nervousness grew in the pit of his stomach.

First Minister Kàllà Tamvere Arrives in Olympia
Kaapo Pirhonen
1 September 2021

OLYMPIA - First Minister Kàllà Tamvere arrived in the International City of Olympia Wednesday evening alongside Minister of Foreign Affairs Amalia Mikkola for the 54th session of the Assembly of Nations. Deputy First Minister Talvikki Eskola is attending to the Storsnian government during Tamvere's absence. Tamvere and Mikkola were greeted by outgoing Speaker Leif Sondrol at the airport in Olympia and were escorted to the Grand Olympian Hotel where the pair will be staying for the next few nights.

This is FM Tamvere's first major international appearance since being re-elected last January. Tamvere has decided to personally attend this year's opening ceremony as a sign of good faith between Storsnia and the AN. The AN had a very important role in rebuilding the Storsnian nation following Paholainans death and the subsequent Week of Chaos. Upon arriving in Olympia and speaking with reporters Tamvere recalled her mother telling her stories about the brave AN Peacekeepers that had arrived in Storsnia to aid the country.

On FM Tamvere's agenda including a meeting with outgoing Speaker Sondrol on his accomplishments in the AN as well as meetings with other delegations. Minister of Foreign Affairs Mikkola will be meeting with the permanent Storsnian delegation tomorrow morning.

The opening ceremonies will commence on Friday with a speech from the current secretary-general kicking off the event. It is expected that Speaker Sondrol will make a speech as well on his time as Speaker before beginning the vote for this session's speaker.

Eirian Arrives At AN Session
Sept. 1 2021

Image
President Eirian (right) greets an ambassador

INTL. CITY OF OLYMPUS - President Derwen Eirian has arrived today in the International City of Olympus for the upcoming session of the Assembly of Nations. This years assembly has tensions raised in Illyntheria, as it's status as a neutral nation in the growing divide between the capitalist and socialist global spheres has becoming increasingly tenuous. President Eirian will have the difficult task of promoting Illyntheria's interests damaging relations with its neighbors.

However, the President's statements have remained optimistic. "We may not all- there may be some disagreement on how best to help our people- our citizens. But I hope, I believe, that is, that when all is said and done we will be able to look past our - our differences and choose a path of peace- and choose a path of mutual aid and friendship," Eirian said.

Eirian will also have to keep in mind that his international politics will have political ramifications at home as well. The Worker's Alliance (Cynghrair Gweithwyr, or CG) holds the most seats in Parliament, and favor an inward facing Illyntheria as opposed to an outward facing one. While as President the parliament has little ability to interfere with his actions as Head of State, he will need their cooperation in the coming months as the international economy grows increasingly strained.

Derwen sat staring at a mountain of economic figures, nursing a cup of tea as the numbers swam before his eyes. He'd already called the Minister of Finance and the Economy five times that morning. He had to make certain he knew what he was talking about. "Can't give away the vine with the grapes..." he thought to himself, giving the tables a last once-over before calling calling his secretary. "Iver," said Derwen as he took another sip, "I want you to schedule a meeting for me with President Llywelyn..."

“Good evening everyone I’m Jamie Brooks reporting live from the International City of Olympia. Today is the big day as delegations from all over the world prepare to open this year’s AN session. In just a few minutes here the ceremony will begin with the ceremonial raising of the AN flag and playing of the AN anthem.

Many of the world’s leaders have come to the opening ceremony to show their support for the AN. As well as meet with other leaders and delegations. I’m here with political analyst Sam McRoric. Sam how significant is the AN’s opening ceremony.”

“Jamie I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. The opening ceremony is very important. It’s something that many world leaders come to see and this gives them a chance to meet with their counterparts and hash things out in a neutral setting.”

“Of course and what can you tell us about the speaker vote?”

“The speaker vote happens annually and is very important to gain influence in the AN. As you know outgoing speaker Sondrol is from Storsnia and since his tenure began the Storsnian have seen their influence grow in the Assembly.”

“Ah, the Storsnians, great people, unfortunate history. Have you heard anything on who might be running for this year’s speaker?”

“Well, The Rodaves have already announced a candidate so count on them. I have heard rumors that Lykens and Merrain might throw in candidates as well. No names of course.”

“Thank you for that Sam. Oh, well, it looks like the ceremony is starting lets have a look.”

Image

A camera pans down to show the assembly floor. Delegations from around the world can be seen taking their seats as members of the Assembly of Nations Honor Guard prepare to start the ceremony. Finally, as the last delegate sat the honor guard began the ceremony. The guard marched up the center aisle to the front of the room and took their positions on either side of the room. The Sargent-at-arms then announced the arrival of the Speaker and the Secretary-General. The honor guard then began to hoist the Flag of the Assembly of Nations at the front of the room while the Hymn of the Assembly of Nations played over them. Once finished the Honor Guard left the room the same way they came in. Secretary-General Duesaigües prepared to make his speech.

“Welcome everyone to this 54th session of the Assembly of Nations. It is great to see everyone here today for the opening ceremony. Some of you I have met in the past, while some are new faces, and I hope to meet you soon. We’re all here today to opening this year’s Assembly of Nation’s session. Once I’m done the floor will be opening for delegates to present candidates for Speaker of the Assembly and make speeches of their own.

I want to highlight the importance of the Assembly of Nations. The Assembly has far-reaching capabilities and we strive to improve Olympus for all of her citizens. This might be stabilizing conflict with our brave peacekeepers or extending rights to minority groups all around the world. As Prime Minister of the Rodaves, I worked to improve the healthcare system and make the lives of those in the LGBTQ+ community better. This is something I wanted to extend to the whole of Olympus through the Assembly. Beyond civil rights and healthcare, I wanted to make the world a safer place for everyone. Our peacekeepers have done this stabilizing regions all over the world. Finally, I’ve learned how important it is to preserve our planet’s ecosystem and we have begun the process of doing this by establishing the International Committee on Climate Change. Speaker Sondrol and I have done great work together with all of you and we want to keep this up.

Now without further ado, I open the floor to all of you”

The delegates broke out into applause for the Secretary-General before Speaker Sondrol stood up.

“Let us begin with Speaker nominations. I’ll remind you that the delegation from my home country, Storsnia, is unable to nominate a candidate according to the bylaws of the Assembly.”

Sondrol looked out over the sea of delegates as one by one those seeking a nomination stood up. Sondrol pointed to a delegate standing amongst the crowd and shouted.

“The Delegate from…”

If you are nominating a candidate for Speaker this would be the time to do so.
Also if your delegate/leader would like to make a speech before the Assembly feel free to post that now.
Side events ie. backroom dealings, meetings between leaders can also be posted.
The vote for speaker will occur on September 18th. After this delegations can put forth motions to be voted on by the Assembly.

Earlier...

Machiel Klaasen, Apsica's senior plenipotentiary to the AN, entered the hotel room tentatively with Foreign Minister Halavo's words still in his ears. As he pushed past the door and opened his mouth to speak, he was silenced by the raised finger of the Prime Minister on the phone.

"Yes, your majesty. Quite so. We'll endeavour to find space for her to speak next year..." The raised finger turned into an open hand, indicating towards a seat in the corner of the room. Klaasen quietly took it. A gravelly old voice could be faintly heard on the other side of the line, but no words could be made out. "Oh, indeed? If you'd like, I'll have Katja come and sort that out tomorrow. Yes? Good. Now, that conversation with Mr. von Pondes? Excellent. We're very grateful for your assistance in that matter." Klaasen watched as Reno quite deftly handled his majesty, who was known in some circles to be something of a larger-than-life character. "I believe that will be all for today, your majesty. Now, I recall that we have a teleconference pencilled in for Monday? Very good. Until then." Reno hung up the phone and turned to Klaasen, and he felt his posture straighten right out. "Now then. What can I do for you, Machiel?"

"Ah, yes." Klaasen cleared his throat. "Madame Prime Minister, after our meeting with the delegation from Lykens, there were a few... open questions, regarding our position on the session tomorrow." At this, Reno shook her head. "One question, I suspect." Klaasen sighed. "There is one of particular significance-"

"Who will be the next Speaker of the Assembly of Nations?" Reno interjected. "How shall we vote tomorrow? That's your question?" Klaasen nodded. "As shiny and exciting of a candidate your apprentice Mister Oosterloo is, I am quite content at this point that Miss Belmonte will have the job - though, let us keep that to ourselves and see if we won't be romanced by some other suitor, hm?"

"So, we will not be putting a candidate forward at all?" Klaasen queried.

"No, of course not." Reno waved the question away dismissively. "We'll be for the Lykensburgish camp, and we'll be quite happy about it as well, because it lines us up quite nicely for the real prize next year."

"The Secretary-Generalship."

"Yes, Mr. Klaasen. Presiding over sessions of the assembly is no small measure of influence, but it is in the day-to-day, hidden among the administrative muck and bureaucratic busywork that the real decisions are made."

"Sieb is well-educated, well-spoken, but he's too young for SecGen." Klaasen noted his thoughts ponderously. "They love a passionate face to stand up front and elucidate the Assembly's will, but to run the day-to-day affairs of the organs, it... demands a lot more experience in international politics. They'll never have him for it, not for a decade or two at least."

"I quite agree."

"So, if not Sieb..." Klaasen's question trailed off as Reno's fixed gaze told him everything he needed to know.

"I believe we have a meet with the Merrainese in a quarter of an hour. And you have an informal lunch with the delegate from Twynam at noon. You'll be ready then?"

"Yes, madame Prime Minister."

Now...

Machiel Klaasen stood to be called on, as was convention.

"The delegate from the United Dominions?"

"Thank you, Mister Speaker. The delegation of the United Dominions of Apsica nominates... madame Arecelis Belmonte, of Lykens," Klaasen had practiced the pronunciation of the Lykensburgish name a number of times to be confident with it, " to be Speaker of the Assembly of Nations." It always played best when a candidate could be nominated by a delegation other than their own - especially from another continent. The Apsicans would play their part like professionals.

Assembly of Nations Hall

Candaleria Velásquez stood to seek recognition from the Speaker of the Assembly, quieting the applause from the previous ambassador’s speech. A seasoned diplomat beyond her years, she had dutifully followed her mentor, Arecelis Belmonte, from the Governor’s Mansion in Arecibo to capitals all around the world as she rose in seniority on the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Lykensburgish Senate. Belmonte had personally recommended her for Ambassador to the Assembly of Nations when Kenneth Diaz had become President and the two had established a quick rapport, bonding over a shared ideology that was traceable to Diaz’s grandfather, Vice President Juan Diaz, a mentor of Belmonte’s. Today, the climax of decades of hard work and perseverance would be rewarded, and Candaleria had worked hard the previous week to see to her mentor’s election as Speaker of the international organization.

“Mister Speaker, first, may I commend you for your dutiful work this past year. You have proven to those around the world, although I promise you not my countrymen, the virtues of the Storsnian people. A proud people, a noble people, some of the hardest working people on this planet. Your service to this august body will be felt for decades to come and I can not convey my immense gratitude to you for steering this Assembly so nobly.

The Assembly of Nations was created with the express purpose of bridging the immense gaps that sometimes exist between nation-states. To provide justice for those mistreated, to protect those who are in dire need, to give hope when all else seems lost. There are so many nations represented here today,” Her arms extended, gesturing to the throngs of delegates, “That many would think such a mission foolish and naive at best, or dangerously incoherent and hopelessly bereft. I look down on these criticisms with disdain, Mister Speaker, for this body and all it has accomplished, and what it will continue to accomplish in the future are the very essence of the just world we hope to create and continue perfecting. Our work is cut out for us, and the entire world is watching.

We must continue to build off of the world that you have worked tirelessly to add to the foundation of this esteemed body and organization, and there is no better woman than Arecelis Belmonte to take up your mantle. She has worked tirelessly for the people of Lykens for decades, and during her time in the Senate she has come to know many of my fellow delegates as well as their world leaders. Arecelis has cut her teeth representing the downtrodden and forgotten and as Speaker of the Assembly she will take these skills and experiences to a global stage, able to reach those who have long ago resigned themselves to being unreachable. I have no greater honor than to accept, on her behalf, the nomination for Speaker of the Assembly.”

Nicolau Artesà, the former Rodavese Ambassador to Storsnia and Deputy Foreign, now the Rodaves' Ambassador to the AN, exited one of the black SUVs of his country's delegation, in sync with his fellow diplomats, politicians, the prime minister, and the presumptive Rodavese nominee for the speakership. The delegation had just left the hotel to arrive at the main building of the Assembly of Nations.

Ferrer meanwhile was the phone with the President of the Generalitat back in Cartaganca, Artesà took a moment to take his ears off the surrounding men and onto the Prime Minister. "Do you even think de Dalt has a chance of being selected? You have to be realistic Mr. Prime Minister", the President spoke.

"An Assembly of Nations lead by two Rodavese appointed under UNO leadership would be huge for us Castàlia, our approval ratings are at rock bottom with our coalition government and the recession from last year. We need a big boost in prestige right now", said Ferrer.

"That doesn't answer my question however, Mr. Prime Minister."

"Of course I think she has a chance, I wouldn't be nominating her otherwise, while it is an uphill battle yes, I believe Montse has the opportunity to charm the Assembly into submission. She's always been good at that, she did to Martí in 2012 after Maçanet was canned."

"Only now she has to influence the nations of the world, and not just a weak people pleaser like Pere Martí."

"I think the reward here far outweighs the detriments. We can't put up a Rodavese in 2022 for Secretary General, but we have the ability to get an ally in leadership if de Dalt sits as the speaker until the next meeting of the assembly, and our coalition partners in Cartaganca won't be happy if we lie down and let someone else take the speakership in a crucial year for our government. Puigdemont won't like it, and neither will I."

Artesà agreed with the Prime Minister, in a government where the senior government coalition party isn't even the largest party in parliament, Ferrer couldn't afford to watch from the sidelines, an opposition more united than before will tear into Ferrer for letting the Rodaves lose it's international influence.

Artesà stood firm by the Prime Minister throughout the negotiations within the party to select a nominee, and when Ferrer spoke to his delegation and gave Artesà to give him the official go-ahead to nominate de Dalt when the Rodavese delegation is called upon by the current speaker, he agreed and gave the Prime Minister his word that he will do his best to get de Dalt selected by the Assembly.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

After the United Dominions had respectably nominated a foreigner to be the speaker, Nicolau Artesà stood to be called on.

"The delegate from the Rodaves?"

"Thank you, Mister Speaker. The delegation of the Kingdom of the Rodaves nominates the right honourable lady Montserrat de Dalt i Miravet to be Speaker of the Assembly of Nations." While it certainly impressed the Secretary General, the Rodavese delegation and de Dalt would have to overcome the challenge of the inherent disadvantage they had placed on her shoulders of having to convince the Assembly to put the Rodaves in complete control of leadership in the AN.
