Another official came forward with a stack of documents.

“I suggest you fill out the paperwork on the way. While the land is only 5 kilometers away, the hilly terrain and unpredictable weather will make the drive take another half hour.” The main official interrupted.

“Surprisingly, not many people have laid land claims in these hills, even though the terrain would make the perfect conditions for outdoor recreation. But anyways, it’s about time we get to the requested land.”

A massive limousine arrived near the entrance of the facility, manned by another official. The doors were opened by security officials, holding them out for the company leaders.

“No need to worry about being crammed in that small rental car for more time. Here in Kancia, we always make sure business leaders are treated with the luxury they need.”

"That's very nice of you, the government back at home would just keep us in that crammed rental car. However, our luggage is still in the rental. So if you don't mind, we might need a few minutes to move it all over," one of them said, "Unless, of course, you have moved it over there already? Don't worry, by the way, we'll get the paperwork sorted out as soon as possible."

Glancing over at one of the forms, he asked again, "We don't have a local phone number, at least not yet. Is a long-distance number OK?"

[Kancia]

“A long-distance number is perfectly fine, since we have fast connection in this area.” The official responded.

“And our security personnel already transferred your luggage to the back if this car, so don’t be concerned about any time constraints. You can fill out the documents now while we get the car ready. Oh, and one more thing.”

A security guard approached the group.

“You don’t happen to have any ties with the CCP or any affiliated groups. Apologize if this seems intimidating, but it is mandatory to make sure no sympathizers to them can infiltrate our nation. The question is further down the documents, but it would save time to answer now.”

[Nacrad]

20 minutes later.

"That's a lot of paperwork. You probably would want to consider slimming it down a bit? It's even more than back home. Anyways, here's all of them filled out."

The official took the documents.

“Yeah, apologize for the inconvenience. We have a lot more restrictions and paperwork for foreign corporations than ones here in Kancia. Our President is encouraging domestic enterprises while also making Kancia somewhat open to foreign ones.” He explained.

The officials, carrying the paperwork, entered the limo as a guard was holding the doors open. Inside the car, the group of officials made some space.

“Make yourself comfortable, this commute will take some time.”

As the limo drove forwards, the company officials sat back and mindlessly scrolled on their phones, as there is not much to do.

"This does look a lot like the countryside back home," one of them remarked, "It reminds me of Pak Tam Chung, in Sai Kung, where we all started. Do you happen to have hiking trails around here?"

[Kancia]

The limo swerved left and right, following the route to the requested land.

“Hiking has been an age old tradition around this area. Our president himself has taken treks across the Nivaziv during his childhood, so you won’t have to travel far to find a trail. Even then, almost anywhere this land is suitable for hiking.” The official commented.

[Nacrad]

The limo is driving nearly recklessly through the hills. Not even the craziest of Public Light Bus drivers back at home would dare to drive so fast, but the driver seem to be undazed.

"Ah, no need to cut our own trails, then. Although I'm slightly disconcerted by the sprawling factories we saw driving out of Kancia City. Back at home, we consider the nature a valuable treasure. I'm just praying that factories stay out of this bit of the country, at least." He commented, "Of course, more preferably, they get cleaner where they already do exist."

[Kancia]

“Don’t be too concerned.” The official replied.

“The nearest factory to your plot of land is several kilometers away, back in Uzville where you filled out the paperwork. And no, I don’t think it’s any ‘cleaner’ than the ones in the capital. But I don’t think you should worry since my boss says they are harmless.”

The official casted a slight expression of reluctance at his own statement. The Kancian Government is highly secretive and lacks transparency so it is difficult for regular bureaucrats to understand the big picture of what goes on.

The official hesitated for a moment, then continued.

“But I don’t understand what’s the problem with factories, or how the rest of the world cares so much about nature over economic growth. Economic prosperity is the top priority. At least that’s what I’ve been told from by the President, and we’re told to never question him so I-”

“Almost there!” The driver announced.

[Nacrad]

"Economic development is important, I agree. But the economy is too. Actually, I think this place could work well with eco-tourism! That's what we did back home with our mountains and oceans. I'll show you a few photos after we get to the land."

Soon enough, the limo arrived at the requested plot of land. Just as expected, it is dense with foliage. "Damn, you really weren't joking when you said not many people lay claims to this land, huh?" one of them chuckled, getting out of the limo.

“Yeah, it’s a once in a life-time sight, yet no one even thinks about this area. The government was planning on building a military facility here but I insisted that someone would eventually want this land. If you made the request say, a few months later than you did, then all this vegetation would be gone.” The Official remarked.

He gazed around the land with an expression of awe.

“You are very, very lucky. Not many areas are like this here in Kancia, as factories and industry are almost ubiquitous. It’s sort of surprising to see a foreign enterprise valuing things like the environment when there are more profitable aspects of the economy.”

Another bureaucrat chimed in, “We have gone through all the paperwork. Not much else is needed, so you’re free to use this 75 acres of untouched greenery however you wish.”

“Anything else you want to say?” The main official asked.

[Nacrad]

"Nothing at the moment. We'll draw up a land plan. Are there any construction companies we can hire around here? Also, where can we buy outdoor supplies, like these safety equipment around here? It'll come in very useful, so thanks in advance." one of them asked curiously.

[Kancia]

The official handed a several-page brochure to the group.

“All of Kancia’s top companies are listed on this leaflet, each grouped in different headings depending on their sector. If you want a good construction company, then check the architectural design & engineering section on page 3. Develop-Kancia Co. is probably the best bet you can have for construction work as they can get any project done quickly and efficiently.”

The official took a look back to the road they drove through.

“The nearest store for supplies is back in Uzville, 5 kilometers away through dense foliage and hilly terrain, so you will need to keep a car...”

A few moments passed by and 2 minivans approached the crowd, parking right behind the limo. The security officials manning the vehicles stepped out, holding the keys forward.

“...So we will be renting out these two cars for you to have for the next month. Or at least until you can get a permenant mode of transport.”

[Nacrad]

"Wow, how considerate of you. Wait, let me take a picture of the land... I think we're done around here. Pleasure doing business with you. We'd like to get a photocopy of all the paperwork, company policy. Sorry if we're a bit too blunt, it's how we do business back at home," the company figure said, laughing at himself.

[Kancia]

“Go ahead. While we do employ some protectionist policies for the better of Kancian Patriotism, but we don’t mind foreign corporations engaging in their customs. This land is all yours to use however you please, so long you don’t openly threaten national security.”

The official handed the documents to the group.

“You can doublecheck over your paperwork as you make a photocopy, just to make sure you have the right information.”

[Nacrad]

"Thanks so much, again. We should head back to the city, shouldn't we? The Sun is going down. I don't feel comfortable driving a van down these roads, so perhaps you can by chance help us make the journey?"

[Kancia]

The back doors of the van were opened by the guards.

"Make yourself comfortable and adjusted to the vans. Our drivers are experienced in harsh terrain, and our guards will make sure your property is safe. There is little need for concern." The official smiled, but then he remembered something.

"Oh, at night you should always be on the lookout at the streets. Riots have happened in almost every major town or city, and considering over 100,000 peope live in Uzville, there is a chance you may encounter those communist scum. But don't worry, as a curfew and martial law are in place and any riot will be crushed. Don't be afraid when you see a tank or armored vehicle patrolling the streets. The patriots in green are there to maintain our much-needed law and order."
